You don’t need to travel far north of Auckland to find the perfect place to escape from all your worries and recharge your batteries. From Mahurangi and the Matakana Coast up to Mangawhai, Waipu and Matakohe, our beautiful area offers stunning beaches, sparkling bays, rolling hills and rural views to explore and lose yourself in, and it all starts less than an hour from the city. The relaxation kicks in as you emerge from the Johnstone Hill tunnels on State Highway, or with the breath-taking views of the vast Kaipara Harbour from State Highway 16, and you realise that here is space to breathe and switch off for a while. It might be a cliché, but there really is something for everyone here, from hipsters to history buffs and beach babes to bon viveurs. Savour our many local wines and beers and enjoy abundant fresh produce, much of which can be found at the region’s many markets. Shop up a storm or sleep on a sand dune; try scuba and surfing, or mooch round a museum – whatever you fancy, you’ll find plenty of ways to indulge yourself. The region is home to countless artists, craftspeople and food producers, who love it here for the light and the laidback lifestyle. Come and make some memories, too, whether for a day or a dream holiday, and keep this copy of Destination handy as a guide to what’s on offer.

It is only a short distance from State Highway One to Puhoi, but in other ways this historic little village is a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The name Puhoi translates to slow water, which fittingly describes the waterway that runs between the ‘town’, and the sports grounds and public toilets on the other side. The best way to appreciate the village is to take a stroll around. Places of interest include the museum, Church of Saint Peter and Paul with its magnificent stained-glass windows, the old Centennial Hall, the Old Library, the General Store where you will find hot food and local produce, the Slow Water Trading Post with its eclectic mix of jewellery and clothing, Lock, Stock & Barrel next door and last, but not least, the Puhoi Hotel which has been trading since 1879.

Twin parks

South-east of Puhoi, on the other side of SH1, are two regional parks – Wenderholm, near Waiwera, and Mahurangi West, at the end of Ngarewa Drive, off Mahurangi West Road. Both parks offer ample opportunities to swim, picnic and explore. Mahurangi West has numerous walks including the three hour return Te Muri walk, which passes a historic cemetery where more than 100 Māori and European settlers are buried. The urupā was established in the 1860s

Events

Puhoi celebrates its Bohemian roots on June 28 each year with a special lunch for the descendants of the first settlers.

• The Village Market is held in the

Sports Club grounds on the last Sunday of each month, from 9am to 1pm. There’s a range of craft and produce stalls, as well as live music and car boot sales. Note: There is no market in December.

h t r o w Wark Locals hope the growth that is headed Warkworth’s way won’t change the tranquility that the river, with its bush backdrop, provides. Warkworth is an old river town, built along the banks of the gently tidal Mahurangi, and a walk along its recently restored wharf and riverbank path is a great way to unwind and get a feel for the place. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot the restored scow The Jane Gifford and maybe take a cruise on her down past the banks of preserved native bush to the dramatic industrial ruins of the historic Wilson cement works. The town itself is a thriving shopping and rural service centre, but on a small, attractive scale, with everything you could need from major supermarkets to boutique cafes and clothes stores. Just south of town is the Warkworth Museum and Parry Kauri Park, which is a great way to entertain the family for a day. The museum features an eclectic mix of displays from past lives and times, including a number of recreated rooms from a century ago, such as a corner shop and a classroom. The grounds 6

feature a number of old buildings and boats, and there is an enjoyable walk through native bush, which includes two of the oldest and largest kauri trees in the district at its start.

Walk

Kowhai Park, just off SH1. A hidden gem with historic lime kilns, notable native trees and meandering paths and boardwalks.

Play

Riverbank playground, just below the Warkworth Information Centre and public toilets. Fully fenced and safe for little ones, with a skate ramp for older kids a little further along in Baxter Street.

Picnic Lucy Moore Park, at the

end of Baxter Street, Warkworth. Dog-friendly park for off-leash runs, riverbank views and a flying fox for the kids.

Moving around New Zealand isn’t what it used to be. The reality of Covid restrictions, which can change at the drop of a hat, means that travellers must be prepared to adapt their plans. There are also borders to negotiate if heading north and Vaccine Passes to display in places such as eateries and bars.

HERE’S A FEW SIMPLE THINGS TO REMEMBER: If you become unwell while on holiday or think you have been exposed to a Covid-19 case, get tested. Don’t travel or take part in events or activities if you are sick. Contact the 24-hour Healthline service on 0800 358 5453 for advice and to arrange to get tested. Testing services will be available throughout summer. Details of the nearest testing service are available at Healthpoint (www.healthpoint. co.nz). The site also tells you when these services are open. • Wear a mask when out and about • Scan in wherever you go • Maintain social distancing especially in crowded places • Before leaving home, make sure you have your Vaccine Pass on your phone and a paper copy just in case you lose your phone or the battery goes flat • Carry a kit that contains hand sanitiser and spare masks • If you haven’t been vaccinated, you will need to have a negative test within 72 hours of travel.

Kawau Island feels like another world. A marine playground full of safe anchorages and swimming beaches, scenic hiking trails, taking mere minutes or several hours.

Driving into Snells Beach offers one of the area’s finest views, as Kawau Bay is revealed in all its glory before you enter the township itself. Take almost any left turn and you’ll get down to a long, paved beachside walk lined with pohutukawa and grassy reserves. The bay is home to a number of rare and endangered shorebirds, including dotterels and godwits, and the locals are passionate about their protection. Swimming is generally not an option in this shallow, sandy bay, but can just be managed at high tide. For better bathing options, a more rural outlook and some decent tramping options, head further along Mahurangi East Road to Scandrett Regional Park, a former farm owned by European settlers, or go on to Martins Bay, where there is a popular holiday camp and views down

Walk

the Hauraki Gulf to Auckland. Just across the waters of Kawau Bay lies Kawau Island, an unspoilt haven laced with sheltered bays and inlets beloved of boaties and nature lovers. The 2000 hectare island was once home to such exotic animals as monkeys, zebra and kangaroos, brought over by Governor Sir George Grey, who bought the island in 1862 and lived there for 25 years. Today, Mansion House and its grounds are run by the Department of Conservation and are open to the public daily. While many of Sir George’s introduced plant and animal species are no more, peacocks, wallabies and kookaburra continue to thrive. The daily Royal Mail Run cruise from Sandspit is a relaxing way to spend a day exploring the island’s coastal settlements and historic landmarks.

Te Whau Walkway, Snells Beach. This slightly off the beaten track path connects the park-like Goodall Reserve in Hamatana Road with Dawson Road, via the banks of the Mahurangi River estuary. The Brick Bay Sculpture Trail, on the hillside above the bay, is the place to see renowned artworks in a native bush setting (admission charges apply).

Visitors to Matakana are spoilt for choice with markets and village stores, as well as a number of boutique breweries and wineries. There are stunning beaches and bush walks nearby, and plenty of opportunities to fish, surf, sail and snorkel.

Walk

Mount Tamahunga, Omaha Valley or Rodney Roads. This hike to the top of the region’s second highest point is not for the fainthearted or unfit, but still well worth a lengthy tramp. Matakana has become a tourism mecca in recent years, with its popularity so great that it’s given its name to the whole region, now promoted as the Matakana Coast. The main drawcards are the town’s two ever-popular weekly produce and craft markets, plus the clutch of boutique stores, restaurants and galleries built around a funky independent cinema complex. Though the traffic can be a nightmare at times, there’s no denying the buzz that summer brings as crowds flock to the township and out to the

stunning sandy beaches at Omaha, Matheson Bay and Pakiri. Another huge drawcard is the regional park at Tawharanui, with its reliable surf, dazzling white sand, rolling pastoral grassland and walking trails through native bush. The park is a wildlife sanctuary, complete with predator-proof fence, and kiwi can be spotted during evening tours. For a look at wildlife under the sea, go to Goat Island at Leigh, a marine sanctuary where you can dive and snorkel in clear, fish-filled waters.

Play

Matakana Wharf. In true Matakana style, this is quirkier than your average playground, with a superlong curvy slide, a tyre swing and lots of climbing. Also lots of ducks.

Picnic Buckleton Beach. This

is a hidden gem of a beach tucked away at the end of Whitmore Road. Grass to sit on, ancient pohutukawa, a sandy beach and lovely views south across Kawau Bay.

Kaipara Harbour is one of the largest in the world, covering nearly 1000 sq kms and extending 60 kms from north to south.

Te Ao Marama Maori cultural centre in Te Hana offers a range of authentic Maori cultural experiences. For opening hours and more information: www.tehana.co.nz/

The Kaipara Coast Highway (SH16), which snakes north from Kaukapakapa to Wellsford along the Kaipara Harbour coastline, provides visitors with spectacular views of a more sparsely populated area of the region. By area, Kaipara Harbour is one of the largest in the world, covering nearly 1000 square kilometres and extending 60 kilometres from north to south. Scientists estimate that 98 per cent of snapper on the west coast of the North Island were originally juveniles from nurseries in the harbour. The infamous bar at its mouth has sent many ships to a watery grave. Just south of Glorit, visitors may notice unusually large structures on the hillside facing the harbour. This is the Gibbs Farm Sculpture Park, which only opens to the public on selected days and on a bookings-only basis. The park is home to works by internationally acclaimed artists, as well as exotic animals such

as zebra and giraffe. Further north at Wharehine is the 848 hectare Atiu Creek Regional Park, on the Okahukura Peninsula. The park offers plenty of bird watching opportunities, numerous walking and cycling trails, ancient stands of native bush and important cultural heritage sites. There is a campground near Solomon’s Bay and a carpark for campervans and caravans with a SelfContainment Certificate. Wellsford is the perfect place to break the journey, grab something to eat and browse the shops. The town’s name is an acronym based on the surnames of early settlers – Watson, Edger, Lester, Levet, Simpson, Foster, Oldfield, Ramsbottom and Dibble. The historic settlement of Port Albert on the Kaipara Harbour, 10km west of Wellsford, is where the Albertlanders arrived in the 1860s. The museum in Wellsford is the place to learn that story.

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe is a real showpiece of the north, telling the story of the mighty kauri, as well as the Maori of the north, the pioneers, gumdiggers, sawmillers and foresters. For opening hours and more information: www.kaurimuseum.com/ Pahi, on a peninsula between Matakohe and Paparoa, is best known for its annual three-day regatta which started in 1887. The settlement is home to one of the largest Moreton Bay fig trees in the world and the tree is considered to be one of the 10 finest exotic trees in New Zealand.

In the early 1860s, William Rawson Brame had a vision to establish a classless, non-conformist society in New Zealand. On May 29, 1862, the first migrant ships, Matilda Wattenbach and Hanover, departed from the London Docks bound for the Albertland Settlement on the Kaipara Harbour. In total, more than 3000 settlers arrived as part of the scheme and many of their descendents still live in the wider Wellsford area. The Albertland Story chronicles the trials and tribulations of this hardy band of pioneers through extensive records, memorabilia, artefacts and other items relating to the Albertland settlement scheme.

u p i a W . . . i a h w a g n a M The adventure playground in the Activity Zone on Molesworth Drive has a nautical theme, including a pirate ship. All part of a much larger complex that includes a worldclass skate park, bike track, outdoor fitness gym & more. On a good day, when the sun is shining and the surf is rolling in, there are few beaches in New Zealand that can match Mangawhai Heads. A long-time destination for surfers, it is the perfect place to put up the sun umbrella, roll out the picnic blanket and set-up for a morning or afternoon of summer fun. And it won’t cost a cent. The beach is fully patrolled during summer and there is a large carpark, but be warned it fills up quickly when the weather is fine. Families with small children may find the nearby estuary a safer place for the under-fives. The stunning 5km Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway, which starts from the beach north of the surf club, takes two to three hours. Check the tides before leaving if you plan to return along the beach.

Events

• Mangawhai Art Trail, normally held on the last weekend in February, is when local artists open their studios and other venues to the public. Info: www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz

On the road

Take a leisurely drive north from Mangawhai on Cove Road to reach Waipu via Langs Beach and Waipu Cove. Both Langs and the Cove are great swimming and fishing spots. The Waipu Coastal Trail, from the southern end of Waipu Cove beach, takes walkers to the area’s own pancake rocks. Waipu is renowned for its Scottish heritage and the museum is the place to learn the stories of the Highland settlers. Each year on New Year’s Day, the town comes alive for the Highland Games, which attract visitors in their thousands to celebrate all things Scottish.

• The Mangawhai Walking Weekend

will be held on March 12 and 13. This event is a perfect opportunity to traverse well-known and lesser known tracks and trails, some which only open for the walking weekend. Info: www.mangawhaiwalking.co.nz

• Mangawhai Food & Wine Festival,

held in The Olive Grove, March 26. An opportunity to be entertained, sup on delicious food and quaff award winning local wines. Festival proceeds go to the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust to build and maintain tracks and to other community groups.

Not to be missed

The Mangawhai Museum holds regular exhibitions, as well as its permanent displays which tell stories of an epic battle of the Maori wars, lost gold bullion during World War II and takes a look at the local natural history around Mangawhai and its harbour including the fight to save the critically endangered fairy tern.

Beware beach birds

Up and down the Mahurangi coast, on beaches east and west, there are colonies of rare native shore birds, including the New Zealand dotterel and fairy tern. Teams of volunteers do all they can to protect these avian visitors, but they remain vulnerable to predators and habitat destruction. Be aware of birds when you visit local beaches, keep dogs away or under control, and avoid tramping over dunes where the birds may be nesting.
