Mahurangi is an abbreviation of the Maori phrase ‘Mahu hu ki te rangi’ – the rock that points to the sky – and is said to have come from the Ngati Rongo tribe, which originally inhabited the land between Auckland and Whangarei. At the time of European settlement in the 1840s, the name referred to the Mahurangi River and around 100,000 acres of surrounding land that was purchased or bartered from local Maori. Mahurangi is in the rohe of Ngati Manuhiri, which extends from Mangawhai to Whangaparaoa including Te Hauturu o Toi (Little Barrier), Te Kawau tumaro o Toi (Kawau Island) and Tiritiri Matangi.

The pub has been trading in one form or another since 1879 and like many historical watering holes, it has become something of a museum. The interior walls are lined with photographs and memorabilia from bygone days when bullock teams hauled giant logs from the nearby kauri forests and the roads were made of mud. One of the biggest events on the annual calendar in Puhoi is the Axemen’s Carnival, which is held in the grounds of the pub in January. Many of the events demonstrate the skills that were honed in those early times. Warkworth

The jewel of Warkworth is undoubtedly the Mahurangi River, a tidal waterway that flows into the Hauraki Gulf. When the town was still a timber camp, exporting kauri spars to Australia, it was called Browns Mill after the water-powered sawmill that stood on the river bank. Today, a walkway follows the river from the town bridge, near the historic Bridgehouse Bar & Restaurant, to Lucy Moore Park.

The magnificent Norfolk Pine in the grounds of the Warkworth Inn, in the main street, was planted in 1874 to commemorate the birth of the then-publican’s son. The historic inn is currently undergoing a major restoration, with plans to reopen it as a restaurant with a town green outside. Another way to enjoy the river is by boat. The restored sailing scow Jane Gifford, berthed at the Warkworth Wharf, was built at Whangateau in 1908 to cart granite from the mines in Coromandel to Auckland. These days, she runs regular public sailing days and charters. For sailing times, visit janegifford.org.nz

new initiative in the town is a digital storytelling trail, setup by some local history enthusiasts. The concept is similar to museum audio tours, using recordings of local people telling the town’s stories. The first three stories are on Lucy Moore Park, swimming sports at the town bridge and the history of the Jane Gifford. Look for the wooden posts with the QR codes. Scan the code and it will automatically bring up the audio story related to that location.

A

The town has a range of boutique retail shops, many carrying locally made arts and crafts, and upcycled items. Lovers of retro goods will find there are two Hospice shops, a museum secondhand shop and a Community Shop open during normal business hours, as well as a very popular Wednesdayonly sale at the Mahurangi Trading Post, on the corner of Mill Lane and Whitaker Road. There is also a good range of food and beverage options, for lunch and dinner, many stocking local wines, beers and ciders. Markets are held on the first Saturday morning of the month outside the Masonic Hall beside the library in Baxter Street.

Snells Sandspit Kawau Virginia King

Sculpture Trail: Art, fine food and nature are the ingredients which have made the Sculpture Trail at Brick Bay one of the region’s showcase visitor attractions. The two-kilometre trail meanders past lakes, grapevines, forest and open pasture. There are around 60 carefully curated large-scale artworks on display, some that float, move with the wind or sunlight, or produce an unexpected sound experience. The Glass House Kitchen also hosts an indoor gallery with small works from leading NZ sculptors.

Brush-tail rock wallabies from Kawau Island are being used in a captive breeding programme in Australia, where the marsupials are in decline. Kawau Island: Sitting just 13-kilometres off the coast from Sandspit, Kawau Island can sometimes feel like another world. It’s a marine playground for boaties, fishermen and divers, with lots of safe anchorages and swimming beaches. There are also a number of scenic hiking trails, which can take anywhere between half an hour to several hours. Many of the routes follow old tracks originating from Mansion House, a category 1 listed Historic Place. The house is open on weekdays from noon to 2pm, and on weekends and public holidays from noon to 3.30pm.

he historic Mahurangi Regatta is held every January at the mouth of the Mahurangi Harbour. The day-long event starts with old-fashioned races on the beach at Sullivan’s Bay followed by racing on the water, sometimes attracting a fleet of more than 100 classic and classic-styled boats. A sight to behold! One of the best vantage points to enjoy views of Kawau Bay is at Highfield Garden Reserve, in Algies Bay. The land was bequeathed to the public by Alison Roberts, along with a small herd of donkeys. If visiting, don’t forget to pack the ‘donkey treats’ – carrots, apples or silverbeet are among their favourites.

Scandrett Regional Park: The park is something of a hidden gem, lying as it does towards the end of the Mahurangi East Peninsula. It offers a range of walking options along paths with inspired names such as the Pig Sty Track. The buildings on site include the original farm house, built in 1884, and some ‘back to basic’ baches, which are available for overnight stays. The beach is a great swimming spot at high tide, with plenty of shady spots for a picnic and, if you’re lucky, you might even get to see a dotterel or two.

Matakana surrounds hile locals may not appreciate their home patch being described as ‘Auckland’s playground’, it is hard to ignore that the Matakana area has become a real magnet for day trippers. This is hardly surprising given that there is something here for just about everyone – wineries, galleries, sculpture parks, boutique shops, cinemas, markets, restaurants and cafes, safe swimming beaches and surf breaks, bush walks and cycleways, and all set against breathtaking scenery.

W

The pealing of St Leonard’s Church bell on Sunday mornings is a reminder that Matakana Village is a blend of old and new. As well as the boutique shops around the cinema, the town has many markers of days gone by including the Matakana War Memorial, the former Dairy Factory (now a Saturday market) and the old boarding house (now a pub).

Marine discovery: The country’s first marine reserve, just north of Leigh, is the perfect destination for divers and snorkellers, or anyone interested in learning more about the wonders of NZ’s rocky marine environment. Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, better known as Goat Island, was established in 1975 and protects 518-hectares of coastline and sea. Dive under the waves and you can expect to see five main habitats – seaweed gardens, coralline turf/bare rock flats, kelp forests, sponge gardens and deep reefs. Common fish species include snapper, piper, silver trevally, jack mackerel, kahawhai and banded wrasse. Taking or disturbing any marine life in the reserve is prohibited, and feeding the fish is also banned, as it disturbs their natural feeding behaviour. The nearby Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre is the perfect place for families, with interactive displays and touch tanks, which are great fun for children.

Nature at its best: If white sandy surf beaches, rock pools, native bush, farm pastures and regenerating wetlands are your thing, then don’t miss Tawharanui Regional Park. The park covers nearly 600 hectares, protected by a 2.5km pest-proof fence. Thanks to Auckland Council rangers and a dedicated team of volunteers, the sanctuary is an important regenerating habitat for reintroduced native species such as kiwi and takahe. A large campground caters for both tents and campervans, and there is a network of tracks to explore, take in the views or get some exercise. The Tawharanui Marine Reserve, which runs along the northern side of the peninsula, was established in 2011 and replaced the former marine park. Sorry, no dogs, cats or other pets allowed.

Wellsford Kaipara Straddling State Highway 1 and surrounded by farmland, Wellsford is the perfect place to break a journey, grab something to eat and browse the shops. The town’s name is an acronym based on the surnames of early settlers – Watson, Edger, Lester, Levet, Simpson, Foster, Oldfield, Ramsbottom and Dibble. The historic settlement of Port Albert on the Kaipara Harbour, 10km west of Wellsford, is where the Albertlanders arrived in the 1860s. The freshwater dune lakes of Tomarata are a great family destination for picnics, swimming and water-skiing. The 4.3 km Dome Valley Walkway, south of Wellsford, is also another popular destination for visitors who love the outdoors.

Piroa Falls: Piroa Falls in the Waipu Gorge Scenic Reserve, between Maungaturoto and SH1, owes its origins to a band of hard volcanic rock which has resisted erosion to create a spectacular waterfall into a deep plunge pool. The impressive falls provide an excellent spot for swimming and there’s a good picnic site on the bank.

Brynderwyn Hills walkway: The Brynderwyn range runs about 15km, roughly between Mangawhai Heads and Maungaturoto. The walkway follows varied terrain, including regenerating bush and farmland, with some steep sections. There are spectacular views of the sea, including the Mangawhai estuary and the Hen and Chicken Islands. As you reach the Trig at 276 metres there are magnificent views in every direction. Dogs are not permitted on the walkway.

D

o the right thing – Kauri, one of the longest living trees in the world, once covered 1.2 million hectares of the upper North Island, from the Far North to Te Kauri, near Kawhia. The trees can grow to more than 50 metres tall with trunk girths of up to 16 metres. But the great forests of the north are facing extinction from kauri dieback. The disease spreads with soil often carried on footwear, equipment, vehicles, feral animals and pets. There is no known cure and nearly all infected trees die. The only way we can save our kauri is to contain the disease and stop it spreading. The threat is so severe that some forests and tracks have already been closed. Visitors to any forest in the Mahurangi region are asked to take the time to clean their footwear and other gear before and after entering the forest (cleaning stations have been set-up at the start of some walks); and stay on the track, as kauri roots can grow outwards three times as far as the branches.

In the early 1860s, William Rawson Brame had a vision to establish a classless, non-conformist society in New Zealand. On May 29, 1862, the first migrant ships, Matilda Wattenbach and Hanover, departed from the London Docks bound for the Albertland Settlement on the Kaipara Harbour. In total, more than 3000 settlers arrived as part of the scheme and many of their descendents still live in the wider Wellsford area. The Albertland Story chronicles the trials and tribulations of this hardy band of pioneers through extensive records, memorabilia, artefacts and other items relating to the Albertland settlement scheme.

Here at Drummers Homestore, we are passionate about providing customer service and products that will exceed your expectations every time. Mangawhai Waipu angawhai has long been one of Auckland’s most popular holiday destinations and the assortment of baches that cluster around its sheltered harbour bear testament to this. Visitors are drawn to the area for its surf, sand and sunshine, but there is plenty more to see beyond the beach. The stunning 5km Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway has been described as one of the best in NZ and takes about two to three hours. Check the tides before leaving so you can include the return leg along the beach. The views on a fine day extend from Bream Head to Coromandel. Markets in both Mangawhai and Waipu showcase local produce such as honey, wine and olives, as well as individual arts and craft (see page 38 for times), and local artists regularly hold exhibitions, studio tours and events (mangawhaiartists.co.nz). The annual Mangawhai Summer Carnival is held at the Mangawhai Domain on January 2, from 9am to around 2pm, and is a fun day for the whole family. One stop not to miss is the Mangawhai Museum, one of the best regional museums in NZ.

About 20km north of the township are the Waipu Caves, where visitors will find stalactites, stalagmites and glow worms in the largest cave passage in Northland. Entry is free and at your own risk; there are no guides. There is also an excellent golf course in Waipu and a range of easy, relaxed dining options in the town. he award winning Kauri Museum at Matakohe is well worth a visit to learn about how the mighty forests of Northland were used by pioneers, both for timber and gum. The drive to the museum winds through productive farming country and takes in views of the Kaipara Harbour, as well as the historic towns of Maungaturoto and Paparoa. The small harbour settlement of Pahi is the place to be on Auckland Anniversary Weekend when it hosts the Pahi Regatta, an event that has been held annually for more than 130 years.
