KAIWAKA TINOPAI Mahurangi is an abbreviation of the Maori phrase ‘Mahu hu ki te rangi’ – the rock that points to the sky – and is said to have come from the Ngatirongo tribe, which originally inhabited the land between Auckland and Whangarei.

At the time of European settlement in the 1840s, the name referred to the Mahurangi River where Warkworth was founded and around 100,000 acres of surrounding land that was purchased or bartered from local Maori.

Once the Northern Motorway ends and you emerge from the toll tunnels, it’s time to slow the pace, unwind and enjoy the myriad delights that can be found from Puhoi north to Waipu, along the Kaipara Harbour on the west coast, and across to the bays and islands of the Hauraki Gulf.

Whether you are looking to enjoy a traditional Kiwi camping trip or pamper yourself at a luxury lodge, Mahurangi hospitality caters for every kind of visitor, with one of the most extensive selections of holiday accommodation in the country. And it is all too easy to live extremely well while you’re here – there are vineyards, wineries, craft breweries and cider makers; gourmet food producers, artisan markets and an abundance of farm produce; modern restaurants, bars, bistros and cafes … and you’re never more than a few minutes drive away from a top notch flat white. There are sculpture parks and art galleries, museums and potteries, and a raft of craft and retro-vintage stores.

There is also plenty of opportunity to get away from it all at one of the many regional parks and marine reserves, where you can walk, ride, sail, dive, surf and swim to your heart’s content in uncrowded natural surroundings, a million miles from the rat race.

Whatever you decide to do, and whether you’re a local or just visiting, keep this guide handy to help you make the most of the area’s many attractions.

PUHOI Many of the drivers who speed along State Highway 1 probably pass the turn off to Puhoi without giving it a second thought. Apart from a sign or two mentioning a ‘Historic Village’, there’s little clue that this minor side road, disappearing into an apparent tunnel of trees, leads to one of the region’s most precious gems, a pretty little township overflowing with character and historic buildings.

Established in 1863, Puhoi was founded by a group of settlers from Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic, in a steep-sided valley on the banks of a river. Those early pioneers had a hard life, cutting and clearing giant kauri to make a living and building a community from scratch, but they survived and prospered, and Puhoi today is a thriving mix of old and new families.

At the centre of the village is the Puhoi Pub, a grand old white weatherboard two-storey hotel, with verandas

and gardens outside, and a breathtaking collection of artefacts and memorabilia inside. Every surface from floor to ceiling is packed with old tools and implements, framed photos and postcards, and banknotes from all over the world. Then there’s the delightful Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1880 by Catholic settlers, and featuring 22 stained glass windows and an altar painting that is an exact copy of one in the founders’ Bohemian homeland, plus a fascinating Bohemian museum.

There is also a quaint little library on the banks of the river – look for the marks on the doorway which show the height of some of the floods that have swept through Puhoi – plus a venerable village store, tea rooms, a popular cheese factory, and boutique shops selling vintage and diverse items.

A popular farmers market is held at the sports ground, opposite the store, on the last Sunday of every month.

Slow Water Trading Post Puhoi was established and built on the timber trade and those links continue today, thanks largely to New Zealand’s “original extreme sport” – woodchopping. The Puhoi Axemens Club stages a popular classic NZ woodchopping carnival in the village outside the pub every January, with more than 20 classes and an axe-throwing contest. Founded in 1962 by the late Ted Coshill, a Puhoi resident and descendant of one of the village’s original pioneer families, the club has been home to some of the country’s finest axemen, with some representing NZ and breaking national records.

WARKWORTH Warkworth is the largest shopping and business centre in the region, with considerably more growth predicted in the years ahead. But this picturesque town on the banks of the Mahurangi River still retains a relaxed and welcoming air, with a wide range of shops, cafes and waterside walks.

The town was established by John Anderson Brown, who settled at the head of the Mahurangi River in 1843. Undeniably a man of vision and drive, he not only became the town planner, creating Warkworth’s distinctive orderly street layout, but he was also the town’s first postmaster and first police constable. The settlement grew and prospered on the back of a variety of industries over the years – timber processing, shipbuilding, lime and cement manufacture, flour milling, fruit growing and agriculture – and these days is the commercial and service hub for a wide area.

The best place to get a feel for Warkworth is where it all started – by the river. There are walkways following the riverbank from one end of town to the other, under bridges and trees, along boardwalks and by the

wharf, and through parkland. Pack a picnic or feed the ducks, and see if you can spot the Birds of Mahurangi sculptures along the way – silhouettes of native birds made out of metal. There are usually a few boats moored at the wharf, not least the Jane Gifford, an historic sailing scow that was restored by local volunteers.

The vessel is used throughout the year for a variety of public and private events, and offers a programme of cruises down-river. Details of sailing times are usually posted on the wharf itself or the nearby i-SITE will have details.

A trip on the river offers a view of one of Warkworth’s most iconic landmarks, the ruins of the old cement works, at the bottom of Wilson Road. The huge walls and chimneys have been abandoned since production ceased in 1928, but at one stage the plant employed 180 men and exported more than 20,000 tonnes of cement every year.

The flooded quarry alongside the derelict buildings is a popular picnic and swimming spot in the summer, and a great place for a dip if you don’t fancy the beach.

SAVOURING LOCAL FLAVOURS It might not be nice to boast, but the towns and villages from Puhoi north to Waipu can pretty much match the best that the city has to offer, with the bonus of having much better scenery. And coffee is our specialty.

Whether it’s from a coffee cart on the roadside or even at the beach at Matheson’s Bay, a tiny village store like Puhoi, Point Wells or Port Albert, or at one of the countless top notch cafes in the towns and coastal villages, you are genuinely never far from a decent coffee. If you’re lucky, you might even get to taste one of several local blends, such as the Gold Medal winner from Rush Espresso.

In terms of breakfast, all bases are covered, whether it’s green smoothies and vegan organic muesli or a full English fry up, there are boutique cafes to cater for all tastes and budgets. If you’re just grazing, don’t make the mistake of not calling into one of the local bakeries, from prize-winning pie makers in Warkworth, Wellsford and Maungaturoto to a pair of fine French patisserie producers in Matakana or an

Italian family baker in Kaiwaka. Asking the locals is the best way to find the most popular places – some can be tucked away and not immediately obvious.

When it comes to dining, whether for a relaxed lunch, simple supper, gourmet dinner or fish and chips with the family, once again, there is plenty of choice. Artisan pizzas are popular locally, with great examples in Matakana, Leigh and Waipu, and there is great local fish and chip shops to be found up and down the coast.

Traditional hotels offer everything from hearty pub grub to the best modern New Zealand cuisine, and several local wineries have restaurants open for lunch and dinner.

International tastes are well catered for, from traditional Indian, Thai and Chinese takeaways to more unusual flavours from Cambodia, Turkey, Vietnam or France. For those with a sweet tooth, there are cafes attached to chocolate-making factories in both Warkworth and Mangawhai, and iconic homemade gelato near Matakana.

GOOD CHEER

DIY delights If you’re camping or self-catering, a thriving foodie scene means you can find any number of gourmet delights to spice up your holiday eating, many of which will be grown or produced locally. Some of the best regional produce includes cheeses from Puhoi and Kaiwaka, locally-smoked salmon, buffalo meat and cheese from Whangaripo, gourmet sausages from Wellsford, kombucha from Matakana, plus any number of local preserves, pickles and olive oils from throughout the region. One of the many local farmers and food markets is probably the first stop for the best local produce, but local specialist food shops and even supermarkets carry a good range of regional products these days. Carry some cash and keep an eye out for the many roadside stalls, too, selling fresh fruit and seasonal produce, and free range eggs.

Wine has been produced in the Matakana region off and on since European settlement, but it is only in the last 25 years that the area has taken off as a serious, if boutique, producer of premium wines. There are more than a dozen wineries and vineyards dotted between Warkworth and Mangawhai, with many of them opening their doors to the public for tasting and sales, plus a few that have their own cafes and restaurants attached.

Although initially best known for quality reds, local winemakers are now producing some excellent white wines from pinot gris, chardonnay and the Spanish grape variety albarino, as well as a fine selection of rosé – perfect for summer holiday drinking.

If beer is more to your liking, you are also in luck. There has been a minibrewing boom in the region, with a tempting range of craft beers produced locally. Many local pubs and restaurants make a point of stocking the local brews, and a good selection is always available from the Tahi craft beer bar in Warkworth’s town centre and Mangawhai’s Wood Street Freehouse.

WELL-STOCKED CIDER CELLARS The Matakana region has long been known for its wines, but another locally grown and manufactured drink is also making its mark now – cider. And, in this area at least, it is real cider that’s being made – purely from the fermented juice of crushed apples (or, on occasion, pears).

The best cider is made using only a blend of different apple varieties, all of which are chosen with care to give the right balance of sweetness, acidity and tannin in the finished drink. This is exactly what winemaker Sam Whitmore started to do on his family farm at Matakana back in 2009, when he launched the region’s first traditional cider, Zeffer, and sold it at the local farmers market.

Having seen cider go through a resurgence in the UK, he was confident there was a place for quality craft cider in NZ. He was right. The company now makes at least nine different styles, from a traditional West Country ‘scrumpy’ to innovative new ciders infused with flowers or even tea. Zeffer exports to seven countries and the company has won major awards on both sides of the Tasman.

Some of the apples used for Zeffer’s top of the range ciders still come from the Matakana region, from a very special heirloom orchard growing at least 50 varieties of classic cider apples on the fertile Omaha Flats. This orchard also produces its own traditional cider and apple juice under the Jones Road label. The classically dry style cider is sold from a shop at the Jones Road orchard, as well as at the Matakana Farmers’ Market every Saturday.

Meanwhile, at The Cider Shed and orchard, just north of Warkworth, yet another hand-crafted cider business has been established, this time by father and son team Alan and Jordan Spinks. They produce a range of award-winning traditionally-made ciders under the Forbidden label, though frequently with a quirky twist. So, aside from classic apple styles, there are also ciders infused with chilli, hops or honey, plus a pure pear cider – known as perry – and seasonal specialties. As well as growing apples and making ciders, the Spinks also run a licensed restaurant and bar.

ART IN OUR OWN BACKYARD A growing number of talented artists, potters, sculptors, glassmakers and jewellery makers have made their homes in the Mahurangi region and, subsequently, more galleries and spaces for them to showcase their work have been created. This is especially true in and around Warkworth and Matakana, at Mangawhai which has its own Art Trail featuring around 20 local artists, and Waipu.

The artworks are sold from a range of venues from homebased studios to several purpose-built galleries holding regular exhibitions. The area hosts a number of annual art exhibitions, including two held over the peak holiday season at Snells Beach Community Centre and Matakana School. There is also a local Collectables Trail of shops selling eclectic and retro goods, and arts and crafts.

Lovers of sculpture are spoilt for choice. On the east coast, overlooking Kawau Bay, is the Brick Bay Sculpture

Trail and award winning Glass House, which is part of Brick Bay Wines vineyard. The trail is a 2km scenic walk, much of which is through native forest, featuring around 45 different works by leading NZ artists and designers. On the west coast is the extraordinary Gibbs Farm on SH16, skirting Kaipara Harbour, where nearly 30 major works on a grand scale have been commissioned over 20 years to work in tune with the broad, open landscape and harbour views. MATAKANA Matakana has changed a lot since it was just a typical Kiwi village built on farming, fruit growing and the timber trade. While the area has always been a favourite haunt for artists such as Ant Morris, from the internationally renowned Morris & James Pottery, its transformation started in earnest in the 1990s, when a farmers market, boutique cinemas and retail complex was built on the former timber yard, on the river above the Matakana falls.

Since then, the village has become a hotspot for Aucklanders visiting for the weekend and for holidaymakers from all over the world, all drawn by the markets and range of cafes, restaurants, specialist shops and galleries.

Every weekend, and especially in the summer holidays, the place is buzzing with shoppers and sightseers, and parking places are at a premium. For this reason, it’s probably best to leave the car on the outskirts of the village and explore on foot. Take a wander down to the wharf to view the river and the falls, then walk through the garden at Plume Café (we dare you not to stop for one of the homemade pastries!) and down to the riverbank for a waterside walk under the new

pedestrian/cycleway bridge into the village and market complex.

It’s an easy drive to any number of beautiful beaches from Matakana – Omaha’s white sands and rolling surf make it one of the most popular beach destinations, but there are plenty to choose from, including Buckletons, Baddeleys and Campbells beaches on the Tawharanui Peninsula, or Mathesons Bay near the picturesque fishing village of Leigh. If the children are getting bored, there’s a reptile park on the Ti Point Road and a super-safe shallow swimming beach adjoining the Whangateau Domain (although make sure the tide is in!).

For an alternative perspective of the Matakana Coast, head for the hills – take a drive to the top of Matakana Valley Road, up Schollum Road (off Leigh Road between Matakana and Whangateau) or head up to Rodney Road, which straddles the ridge-line above Leigh. On a clear day you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean, islands and bays, from Pakiri north to Whangarei Heads and down to Auckland in the south.

LEIGH

It’s easy to miss the heart of Leigh if you’re driving from Matakana to Goat Island or Pakiri, but it is well worth stopping to explore this picturesque harbour village to explore. The centre of town is getting a new lease of life, with new accommodation and events appearing at the old hotel site in Cumberland Street, and Leigh Eats is keeping the local tradition of great fish and chips alive and well. Park the car and walk down the hill to the wharf and sheltered harbour, or visit the cliff top cemetery for fine views and a sense of history. There is a stunning coastal walk along to the reserve and beach at Mathesons Bay, taking in views of the harbour and Daniel’s Reef. Just a word of warning, there is a very long, very steep set of steps to negotiate en route.

TE MURI On the other side of the Puhoi River lies Te Muri, a relatively recent acquisition to the Auckland regional parks network. Access to the 382-hectare park, which is still leased as

farmland, is currently restricted to a strip along the coastline and a small campground, accessed by a stream crossing. The land has a long association with Ngati Manuhiri, Te Kawerau a Maki and Ngati Whatua, and was the site of multiple inter-tribal events, battles and marriages dating back to the mid-1600s.

MAHURANGI The Mahurangi Regional Park encompasses the broad waters of the Mahurangi River mouth and harbour, and the many beaches, bays and inlets around its three peninsulas – Mahurangi West in the south, and Mahurangi East and Scott’s Landing to the north. (accessed by road via Warkworth and Snells Beach) and a variety of walks and camping at Mahurangi West (signposted of SH1 just north of Puhoi).

SCANDRETT Drive from Warkworth to Snells Beach and then follow the main road and you will soon come to Scandrett Regional Park. Farmed by the Scandrett family from 1864 until Auckland Council bought the property in 1999, this park on the tip of the Mahurangi Peninsula features an historic homestead and restored farm buildings, as well as a safe swimming beach overlooking Kawau Bay and stunning walks through coastal forest and around rocky headlands, including

Mullet Point. Just south of the park is Martins Bay reserve, which has a boat ramp, swimming beach and campground.

TAWHARANUI Due east of Matakana lies the Tawharanui Peninsula. Follow Takatu Road to the end and you will come to the extraordinarily beautiful Tawharanui Open Sanctuary and Marine Reserve. The park boasts some of the region’s most beautiful white sand beaches, rolling pastures, shingled bays, native coastal forest and regenerating wetlands plus, thanks to a predator-proof fence and a robust conservation programme, impressive numbers of rare native birds and other wildlife. There is a campground, but no dogs or predators are allowed into the park, and nothing must be taken, killed or collected from the sanctuary.

WENDERHOLM If you hire a canoe at Puhoi and paddle to the mouth of the Puhoi River, you’ll land at Wenderholm, which was Auckland’s first regional park (you can also access the park via the Hibiscus Coast Highway, just north of Waiwera). Giant trees shade grassy expanses of parkland that are bordered by the river on one side and the ocean on the other. Visit the historic Couldrey House or follow the paths to viewpoints on the wooded headlands for views across the estuary and the Hauraki Gulf.

PAKIRI With dazzling white sand stretching north and south as far as the eye can see, Pakiri beach is a stunning stretch of deserted coastline, 900 metres and 53 hectares of which are a regional park. With rugged cliffs to the south, huge dunes to the north and stands of mature pohutukawa trees, this isolated beach offers a great place to escape the crowds and get right back to Kiwi nature.

TE ARAI Lying at the far north end of Pakiri beach and to the south of Mangawhai, Te Arai Point is another stunning east coast beach bordered by endless white sand dunes.

The parkland features highly sensitive dune lake ecosystems, wetlands and regenerating forest, and the beach area is home to rare dotterels and fairy terns, so care should be taken. It is not the easiest beach to find, hidden down winding rural roads, but it is well worth the effort.

ATIU CREEK Out on Kaipara Harbour, 20km west of Wellsford, the 843-hectare Atiu Creek Farm was gifted to the Auckland Regional Council

by Jackie and Pierre Chatelanat in 2005. The park enjoys extensive water frontage, with large tracts of native forest and wetlands. It is still a working farm so no dogs are allowed.

GETTING AROUND Lying just an hour north of Auckland on State Highway 1, the Mahurangi region couldn’t be easier to get to, with the northern motorway running from the city centre to Puhoi. If you’re not in a hurry, though, the scenic route along the Hibiscus Coast Highway, which hugs the coast through Orewa, Hatfields Beach, Waiwera and Wenderholm, is well worth the extra few minutes it adds to the journey.

If you’re not driving, there are regular national bus services that run north from the city every few hours, calling at Puhoi, Warkworth, Wellsford, Kaiwaka and Waipu, plus various points in between. There is also a week-day service between Snells Beach, Warkworth and Auckland, which is mainly aimed at commuters, but good for anyone wanting a day out in the city. There is also a local bus service, the Kowhai Connection, which runs between Warkworth and Snells Beach, Algies Bay, Matakana, Point Wells, Omaha and Whangateau. It runs regularly on weekdays and Saturdays for a flat fare, but does not operate on Sundays or public holidays. Info: at.govt.nz/bus-train-ferry/

bus-services/kowhai-connection Cars (and trucks) can be hired in Warkworth, where there is also a wellestablished taxi and charter bus business, which offers a wide range of services from airport shuttles to regional wine tours, as well as a standard taxi service throughout the region. A summer shuttle service runs in and around Mangawhai daily during the peak holiday period, and can also be booked for evening fares.

For a passenger service with a difference, take to the water at Sandspit with a water taxi across to Kawau Island (or anywhere in the Hauraki Gulf if you feel like it), or board the ferry for a more leisurely trip across Kawau Bay. The ferry calls into several coves and bays on the island, and runs cruises to the historic Mansion House, once home to Governor Sir George Grey.

If exploring on two wheels is more your style, there is a comprehensive range of bikes available for hire from a cycle rental business based in Matakana – ideally placed for the purpose-built Matakana, Point Wells and Omaha cycleway.

WELLSFORD If you’re on SH1 and start to spot the odd cow, sheep or goat made of corrugated iron in the fields or on the grass verge, you know you’re getting close to Wellsford, a sizeable country town servicing the farming regions between Warkworth and Whangarei.

The town was founded when settlers moved inland from the Port Albert area, on the Kaipara Harbour, where conditions had proved too challenging to realise their original hopes of creating a major port and city there. Today, Wellsford’s busy main street is lined with a wide range of cafes, restaurants, bakeries and takeaway food outlets, plus specialist shops. An impressive new library, off the highway in Port Albert Road, beside the Albertland Museum, offers both internet access and an electric vehicle charger.

The original settlement of Port Albert is worth a detour to

the west, with harbour views and pretty historic buildings, including the delightful Minniesdale Chapel, just south of the hamlet, on Shegadeen Road at Wharehine. To the east lies the stunning Pakiri Beach, where you can go horse riding among giant dunes and on endless white sand.

For a freshwater dip, try Lake Tomarata, north-east of the town, where there are picnic facilities, safe swimming and a boat ramp.

Just north of Wellsford on the main highway lies Te Hana, a small village but with two big attractions – Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Centre, which offers guided Maori history tours of a 17th century replica village and fortified pa site, and master carver Kerry Strongman’s workshop and gallery, where he makes impressive “jewellery for giants” from native timber, including swamp kauri, which are exported all over the world.

OTAMATEA For the ultimate “getting away from it all” vibe, the hills, waterways and townships of Otamatea, based around the northern Kaipara Harbour, take some beating. Head west off SH1, just before the Bryderwyns, onto SH 12 and you’re into pastoral hill country, with Maungaturoto the first significant town.

Local residents have worked together to install and establish gardens along the main street, and to replace the old town wharf, which sits on the Otamatea River, to reconnect the town with Kaipara Harbour. There is a good range of cafes and specialist shops, plus a monthly market, local farm tours and a thriving purposebuilt repertory theatre. Local walks take in stands of kauri and nikau, and there is good swimming at the spectacular Piroa Falls, in a volcanic rock gorge about 5km north of the town.

The village of Paparoa has a weekly farmers market, a gallery displaying works by local art and craftspeople, and a popular

local pub. It is just a few kilometres from beautiful Pahi Beach, a favourite spot for campers, boaties and fishers, right on the end of a long spit that sits well out into the harbour. Fish, shellfish and birdlife abound, and the settlement is dominated by a striking two-storey historic house (formerly a hotel) and a magnificent Moreton Bay fig tree. A popular regatta is held there every January, with boat and sailing races, a beauty pageant, and stalls and attractions on the waterfront.

A little further west lies Matakohe, best known as the hub of the kauri gum and timber industries of the past.

It is also the home of the popular Kauri Museum and the Coates Memorial Church, built in 1950, to commemorate the life and achievements of Joseph Gordon Coates, who was New Zealand’s first native-born elected Prime Minister, from 1925 to 1928. Coates was born and raised near Matakohe.

Kerry Strongman sculptor and master artist opens his studios and galleries to the public.

His studios are situated on the main highway 5 minutes north of Wellsford at Te Hana in a bright ‘tree frog’ green and black former factory complex. The southern building is home to Kerry’s main workshop, gallery and displays. Kerry’s current creations feature his ‘Jewellery for Giants’ series of mega sculptures in 45,000 year old swamp Kauri – sized from 30cm to 3m+ in size.

KAIWAKA Sitting 19km north of Wellsford on SH1, Kaiwaka is a quirky blend of classic Kiwi country town and eclectic enterprise. There are all the cafes, shops and facilities you would expect in any rural dairy farming hub, but there are some surprises, too. One of these is a distinctive gourmet cheese shop and delicatessen that stocks more than 50 international cheeses, as well as European food and Northland wines.

Next door is the remarkable Eutopia Cafe, a unique, free-form building made of ferro-cement which resembles a stylised ship adorned with mosaics, gilded domes, stained glass windows and a giant seagull.

The building has recently been undergoing renovation and extension. Across the road is Jaques 4 Square, which has been in the same family for generations. In the car park is NZ’s first high speed charger for electric vehicles, a unit that can top up the ‘tank’ of an electric car in around 20 minutes.

Kaiwaka is also known as ‘the little town of lights’ due to its impressive display of Christmas lights during the holiday season. The area around the town is home to a number of people looking for alternative and more sustainable lifestyles, with two eco-villages – Otamatea and Kohatu Toa – and a number of individual retreats and properties.

HERITAGE

One way to get to know the district better is to delve into its past. The Mahurangi region has some exceptional local museums, all quite distinctive and focusing on different aspects of settlement and early rural life.

PUHOI BOHEMIAN MUSEUM The village of Puhoi was founded and settled by migrants from Bohemia (part of the Czech Republic today), and this museum in the old convent school tells their story through photographs, models, historic tools and equipment, household items and clothing. There is a scale model of the village as it was in 1900, plus a library and records room, and a small heritage fruit orchard outside.

WARKWORTH & DISTRICT MUSEUM Tucked away at Parry Kauri Park on the southern outskirts of Warkworth, this museum is well worth a detour for its extensive collections of historic buildings and machinery, as well as memorabilia, photographs, clothing, furniture and tools.

The upper floor features re-creations of rooms from the 1920s including a shop, a kitchen, a classroom, bedrooms and a blacksmith’s workshop.

MANGAWHAI MUSEUM This modern, airy museum in Molesworth Drive opened in 2014 and is designed to display stories celebrating Mangawhai Harbour, from historic Maori battles to shipwrecks and lost gold bullion; the locals who fought to keep the harbour mouth open; plus the boat and shipbuilding industry, and the more recent fight to save the endangered Fairy Tern.

WAIPU MUSEUM Interactive exhibitions and displays tell the dramatic story of the area’s Scottish heritage. The area was founded by migrants who first escaped the Highland Clearances, then moved to Nova Scotia and, briefly, Australia, before finally settling at Waipu in the 1850s under the leadership of preacher Norman McLeod.

TE ARAI, MANGAWHAI & WAIPU There is no better way to get an appreciation of the contrasting landscapes of the Mahurangi region than to drive north from Pakiri to Waipu, detouring to the relatively isolated surf beach at Te Arai and the rapidly growing town of Mangawhai. The drive takes in scenic reserves, productive farming land and, of course, a stunning coastline.

Once a secluded destination for surfers and campers, the character of Te Arai is in flux, as developers make their mark on this scenic spot.

Conversely, Mangawhai has been a popular summer holiday destination for Aucklanders for generations. It has beaches to suit everyone from hardcore surfers to families with toddlers. Massive white sand dunes and dramatic cliffs dominate the ocean side, while safe sandy beaches surround the picturesque harbour. There are two “hubs” – Mangawhai Heads is the commercial centre on the coastal side, while Mangawhai Village lies just over a causeway. Both have a number of thriving cafes, restaurants and shops.

that is now part of the Te Araroa national walking trail. It takes in coastal forest, nikau groves, expansive views and, providing the tide is out, offers a loop back along the beach under the cliffs. It is just one of many scenic walkways in the area. There is also an art trail showcasing Mangawhai’s many talented artists, and regular weekend markets.

Keep driving north along the coast and you reach Waipu, a town which takes its Scottish and Nova Scotian heritage very seriously. There are Highland Games every New Year’s Day, complete with hammer throwing, caber tossing, Highland country dancing, plus bagpipe, fiddling and drumming championships. The event attracts people from all over NZ and, for competitors at least, wearing a kilt is de rigeur. Aside from all things tartan, Waipu has a number of shops selling retro and antique items, and holds popular markets on the first Saturday and second Sunday of every month during summer. A short drive into the hills behind the town takes you to the Waipu Caves, which are home to significant numbers of glow-worms.
