Retirement apartments will follow on from the current project, which is expected to be finished late next year. But this will depend on getting both a resource consent and a building consent.

He expects the resource consent to be granted as non-notified, as it is being designed to comply with the rules under the Unitary Plan.

The company has owned the 2500m2 site for some time, but plans to develop it were on hold as Price Cutters had a long-term lease.

“The tenant could have stayed for another five years, but now they have decided to move on it has become available.”

The company also recently bought the former Wilmot Motors site, on the corner of Whitaker Road and Mill Lane, where it plans to build another block of retirement apartments.

Mr Murphy says it is still assessing options for the 5500m2 site, but it will probably build a four to five storey apartment building with retail on the ground floor.

“We are considering it as a future extension of the Oaks retirement village. We are still talking to planners to determine what can be built.

“We will then need to go through the consent process, so it will be some years before anything happens on the site.”

piling and drainage, almost finished.

A contract for the second phase of construction, which will see the buildings erected, has been let to Takapuna company Kalmar Construction.

The apartment blocks will have 63 units and retail space on the ground floor.

Project manager Dave Stott says the foundations for the building will be laid this month and the main frame of the building will go up over the next four months.

A 50-metre high crane will hoist building materials into the site from trucks parked on Neville Street, lifting the materials over the historic oak trees lining the street.

The loading hours will be restricted to reduce disruption.

The next phase of construction will also involve excavating a basement carpark.

Meanwhile, Summerset Falls Retirement Village started a major expansion this month.

The company is building an additional 79 villas on an adjacent 2.4-hectare site, bordering Woodcocks Road and Mansel Drive.

The first 24 buildings will be finished by the end of the year – the rest will be completed in 2018 and 2019.

The complex already includes a range of villas, cottages and serviced apartments, as well as an aged-care facility.

Matakana Gull targeted again The Gull Service Station in Matakana has been broken into for a second time this year, with thieves once again targeting the shop’s tobacco cabinet.

The break-in occurred on Tuesday October 11 at 3.45am. One of two offenders used a sledge hammer to smash the lower pane of the station’s glass door and they then entered the shop.

The value of what was taken is estimated to be less than $1000, as only one part of the cigarette container was breached.

Station owner Gay Smith says she is saddened by the incident, but pleased no-one was hurt.

“The staff are coping really well, and I tell them we would rather it happened at night so no-one gets hurt,” she says.

No-one has yet been charged in relation to a ram raid at the station in June. The station installed bollards to prevent repeat smash-and-grab, and Gay is considering stopping the sale of cigarettes. Her immediate response to the latest break-in is to look at putting grills on the windows. While Police forensics attended the site on the day of the robbery, no arrests have yet been made and investigations are continuing.

Footage from security cameras is inconclusive, but the offenders are believed to be two young males.

Cans of an energy drink were also snatched during the break.

Plan to fast track Warkworth ‘Millwater’ development George Driver

A 40-hectare site in Warkworth, formerly known as the ‘Stubbs block’, could be turned into a “Millwater-style” development in a matter of years after it was recently bought by developers.

The land on Falls Road, between Viv Davie-Martin Drive and Hudson Road, has been purchased by Jamie Peters and Mark Francis.

Mr Peters says they are planning to create a development with hundreds of houses, a large retirement village, and a mix-use area for businesses and apartments.

He says the development will be similar to the Millwater development on the Hibiscus Coast.

“Millwater is a fantastic environment. I think it’s one of the best jobs I’ve seen,” Mr Peters says. “It’s a good example for other regions.”

The retirement village will probably be about six hectares and be a mix of apartments, houses and joint units.

He says talk that Warkworth is being turned into a retirement village for Auckland is “drivel”.

“There’s a place for everyone in Warkworth. You will see growth in all demographics.”

The mixed-business area would likely include warehouses, offices and apartments, where people can live and work.

“I can see massive amount of growth and there’s going to be a lot of business. A large portion of people want to move out of Auckland and mix work with lifestyle.”

The proposed development is on farmland on Falls Road, near the Mansel Drive Bridge, which is currently under construction.

He says Warkworth will grow significantly faster than Council has predicted, as the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway is going ahead and more people come to the area for the lifestyle.

“The population will double in the next five to seven years. If you look at all towns that have had a new motorway built, the location of entry and exit is where the growth is.

“But at the moment there is very little land for business or housing and nowhere near enough land live zoned.”

Mr Peters says the plans are still at an early stage, but they are working with Auckland Council to get the site livezoned for development, and hope to apply for resource consent next year.

The land is zoned Future Urban in the Unitary Plan, and is not forecasted to be live-zoned for another six years.

But Mr Peters says they are aiming to have the land live-zoned either through a structure plan process, or a private plan change.

Mr Francis and Mr Peters also own the

nine-hectare Ryburn farm opposite the site on Falls Road, where they plan to develop a more upmarket residential community.

They also did a 150-lot development off McKinney Road, which has been developed in conjunction with Golden Homes. Mr Peters says Golden Homes will also be involved in the Stubbs development.

Mr Peters made headlines in 2009 after being declared bankrupt, reportedly owing more than $180 million related to major property developments.

His failed projects included a large subdivision in Gulf Harbour.

In 2012, the Official Assignee, a branch of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, sought a three-year extension to Mr Peters’ bankruptcy, but that was declined and he was discharged from bankruptcy in 2012.

He says he has left that period of his life behind him.

“It will never happen again. I don’t borrow money anymore.

“It was a big company for one guy. It was worth $450 million with $200 million in debt – it was too big.”

He says the money he owed was to banks, not individual investors.

He says his new role is to manage developments, while Mr Francis is the financial backer.

“I’m just the guy doing the work.”

Mr Francis is the managing director of Augusta Capital, which manages over 150 properties worth over $1 billion.

Warkworth to Hibiscus bus service planned for 2018 Auckland Transport has announced it will start a bus service from Warkworth to the Silverdale park and ride in 2018.

Network manager AT Metro Development Anthony Cross says that with increasing development around Warkworth, it’s time for permanent public transport in the area.

“The service will initially consist of several trips each day between Hibiscus Coast Station and Warkworth with connections to towns currently served by the Kowhai Connection service such as Matakana and

Snells Beach.”

Mr Cross says a draft timetable will be released for public feedback early next year. “We want local people to have a say on what suits them as far as links to the city and to the shopping areas on the Hibiscus Coast and North Shore.”

A Warkworth bus service will be included in AT’s North Shore and Hibiscus Coast tender later this year.

The new services will start in the first half of 2018.

Meanwhile, the Mahu City Express has had a successful

trial running two buses from Mahurangi to Auckland every weekday.

The service upgraded to a 33-seater in August to meet demand.

Owner/operator Julian Ostling says he is searching for a second driver to permanently run the two buses. A third bus may also be on the horizon.

“I’m already thinking about another bus, which would run different routes in Mahurangi to service a wider catchment,” Mr Ostling says.

There is obviously much more still to come in the corruption court case involving the Rodney District Council and Auckland Council. But enough already to ask, if there is any truth at all in these accusations, where were all the other heads of departments, the Mayors and Councillors? And what of the highly paid CEOs, including one presented with a substantial and questionable bonus on his departure? For how long have they been blinded to these events where nothing in such a bureaucratic edifice happens in isolation? Or were they all too busy out to lunch?

Many of these folk continue to be deeply involved in Council affairs, at all levels. It is perhaps time to take the blinkers off and stop fooling ourselves as to what corruption actually covers and call for a much wider investigation into how local authorities actually operate.

Not conspiracy theories but the nuts and bolts of reality.

I would just like to ask through your excellent publication, whether the new Matakana footbridge is going to remain in its present shape i.e. a bigger belly than Homer Simpson?

Surely it’s going to eventually look like the poster at the western end, straight across from bank to bank? If it is to stay the shape it is now, then what an earth is the reason? Perhaps to catch all the leaves from the trees? Or just to make it harder to push prams and wheelchairs up the slope?

How pleasing it is to read that at last some action is to be taken over the Hill Street problem (MM Sept 14).

Thanks must go to Mark Mitchell, who lobbied Auckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency over improvements that were suggested by residents in the “Comments Section” of the Mahurangi Matters in April this year and forwarded to Mark.

During this trial period, the traffic flow into Whitaker Road will need dynamic light phasing at the Browns Road end, and changing the ‘stop’ sign to a free turn at the intersection of Mill Lane, Whitaker Road and Neville Street.

Improvements were proposed at this intersection when Countdown was built, so here is an incentive to make some significant changes, as the circumstances have changed due to the old Wilmot Motors site being sold.

We all hope a successful plan will evolve at Hill Street with the completion of the Matakana Link Road and the new Puhoi to Wellsford Highway.

This is designed to create a more pleasant experience by getting them away from the noise of the existing road bridge. Cannabis petition A petition calling for the re-legalisation of cannabis for health benefits was presented to the Member for Northland Winston Peters at an Otamatea Grey Power meeting this month. Club president Beverley Aldridge gave some background on the petition and the fact that many countries had already legalised cannabis for medical use. Mr Peters said he was committed to conducting a binding referendum on issue. During a question and answer session, Mr Peters covered diverse issues including superannuation and his commitment to the Gold Card. Grey Power meetings are held in the Anglican Church Hall in Maungaturoto, on the last Wednesday of the month, at 1pm. All welcome.

Hapu leader appointment Ngati Manuhiri Settlement Trust chief executive Terrence (Mook) Hohneck has been appointed to Auckland Council’s Independent Maori Statutory Board. The nine-person board starts its three-year term next month. Board members sit on Council committees to ensure Council takes the views of Maori into account when making decisions.

Brigade book launch A book on the 50-year history of the Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade will be launched at the Leigh Fire Station on Friday October 28, from 5pm to 7pm.

The launch of Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade 50 Years is ahead of the brigade’s 50-year anniversary, which will be held from November 18 to 20.

Book co-author Tony Enderby says it catalogues the establishment of the brigade and unearths new insights.

He says the main focus is to get as many past members along to next month’s celebrations.

“We are trying desperately to track down as many as we can,” Mr Enderby says.

A West Auckland architect has been fined $1500 after being convicted of catching snapper in the Goat Island marine reserve. Karl Fenning, aged 44, pleaded guilty in the North Shore District Court to catching seven snapper in the reserve. Mr Fenning also had his fishing gear and the illegally caught snapper permanently seized. Another man who was allegedly fishing with Mr Fenning has also been charged and has pleaded not guilty. Two honorary marine rangers saw Mr Fenning fishing from a boat in the channel between Goat Island on September 6 last year. They photographed him from the shore and then tracked his boat to the Omaha Beach boat ramp. They spoke to Fenning and found the snapper, caught in the reserve, in his boat.

Getting to work

It is a great honour to be entrusted as your Councillor for the next three years. As your elected representative I will work hard to provide the leadership and the strong voice required to promote our beautiful region and to deliver results. However, there are challenges ahead and I am focused on finding solutions that will allow us to develop our infrastructure and services in step with our population growth, while protecting what we already value.

To achieve this, my first order of business is to build powerful alliances with the Rodney Local Board, my fellow Councillors, Council’s leadership team and our local members of Parliament to ensure Rodney has a united approach into Council.

By placing people, ratepayer groups, the business associations and community groups at the centre of the equation, collectively we will achieve great things. Building a modern Auckland that is realistic about what it can and cannot afford will continue to be a challenge.

I had my first meeting with the Mayor, who is the most influential figure to assist Rodney. Mayor Goff explained he was keen to improve Council’s performance within Rodney and was equally keen to cap any future rate increases to an average of 2.5 per cent. In return, I made it known that if the Council was really serious about equality across the city, then Rodney required its public transport, road sealing and maintenance, public amenities and facilities to be comparable with the rest of Auckland. I also emphasised that Wellsford’s fresh water and wastewater systems had been neglected for too long and a serious investment for this town was required urgently. Growth was the big topic and having a Structure Plan in place to deliver infrastructure ahead of population growth made sense to both of us.

The meeting included our community’s desire for greater financial accountability and transparency to stop Council’s wastage and overspending and for local rates to be spent locally. I also pitched for a reduction in unnecessary Council regulations and rules, along with allowing local contracts to be sought by local contractors. The Mayor agreed with me that giving Local Board’s more decision-making power was also important.

The actual delivery on any of this will be dependent upon the next investment budget which the Mayor will construct after listening to all of the Councillors, all of the local boards and the wider Auckland community next year.

Getting straight into it, my first week also included a meeting with the Warkworth business association One Warkworth, the Fix Hill Street Now action team and MP Mark Mitchell about advancing a solution for Hill Street.

Mangawhai growth exceeding predictions George Driver

Mangawhai is experiencing rapid growth with the local school rocketing to capacity, property prices rising and developers eyeing up opportunities.

Kaipara District Council’s former chair of commissioners John Robertson says growth has been about 10 times faster than what was anticipated.

“It’s got Council running to keep up,” Mr Robertson says.

“Four years ago when we did growth projections we thought the town would grow by 30 or 40 dwellings a year – now we are getting that every month.”

The Council expects the population of the town to double in the next 14 years.

Incoming Mayor Greg Gent says planning for Mangawhai’s growth will need to be a priority for the new Council.

There has also been an increase in permanent residents in the town. Historically about 45 per cent of the houses were unoccupied, but that’s changing as more people are able to work remotely.

The biggest indicator is the school population.

Mangawhai Beach School has grown by over 100 pupils in the past year and has been forced to turn its library into a temporary classroom to cope.

Principal Aaron Kemp says the school roll stands at 425 and if the trend continues, he expects it to reach 500 pupils next year.

“It’s exciting, but challenging,” Mr Kemp says.

The school is getting three relocatable classrooms next year – one of which will be used as a library.

Mr Kemp says they need up to six new classrooms, but the Ministry of Education isn’t making any promises.

Real estate agents say there is a serious shortage of new sections in Mangawhai for the first time in more than a decade.

this year, it expects the school will continue to grow for five or six years. The Ministry will undertake a detailed study of the school’s future needs to cater for growth next year, he says.

“At this stage, no additional schools are planned for the Mangawhai area. We will continue to monitor population growth and developments, and will reassess if new information becomes available.”

The growth is having a strong impact on property prices and real estate agents are finding demand is outstripping supply.

Bayleys in the North owner Mark Macky says values and sales activity have both been climbing fast.

There were 269 property deals done in the June quarter, up from 194 last year and total sales values are up 61 per cent to $116 million. Average sales values were also up 16 per cent on last year, rising

from $370,000 to $430,000.

The fastest growth has occurred in new sections, with values increasing by over 50 per cent in the past two years, Mr Macky says.

“Three years ago we thought there were enough sections to last 15 years. They’ve now run out and land prices are going up.”

Westmoreland Homes owner Willie Hewitt says building companies are being run off their feet and delays and shortages are pervading the industry.

“We are still building houses in about 18 weeks, but where as a year ago it would take two months to design and price a contract, it now takes about six months.”

He says it is the first time since 2007 that he has seen developers release new sections for sale.

“Every house on a new section is selling straight off the plans.”

Large commercial developments are also on the horizon. It is understood the stalled commercial and residential development land near the causeway has recently sold. However, the owner did not want to comment when contacted.

Further developments on land near The Hub complex, on Molesworth Drive, are expected to go ahead soon.

To cope with the growth, Council is producing a new town plan. Council chief executive Graham Sibery says it will work with the community to look at the future requirements for roads, stormwater, water supply, landscapes, land development and density, and urban design.

A Community Panel has been appointed to provide feedback to Council and guide the process.

Council will hold open days and workshops, and will create a draft plan which will go out for consultation around June next year.

Switchboard blamed for fire Fire investigators believe an electrical fault in a switchboard caused a fire in Matakana that completely destroyed a large packing shed on October 2.

Fire crews from Mahurangi were joined by teams from Auckland to fight the blaze, which posed significant danger due to the presence of propane gas cylinders, vehicles and fertiliser.

Over 50 fire fighters and 12 appliances attended the blaze at the Home Fresh lettuce growing business on Matakana Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Operators Carolyn and Peter Beamish were away when the fire broke out.

The couple’s son Shaun raised the alarm, but it was too late to save the building.

“This was the heart of the business, so we have lost everything,” Carolyn says.

Harbour hosts climate change research Events focus on The findings of two upcoming research projects involving the Whangateau Harbour could have implications on the management of estuaries nationally and internationally.

Auckland University’s Institute of Marine Science director, Professor Simon Thrush, outlined the projects at a recent Whangateau HarbourCare meeting.

The first project involves looking at the possible consequences of climate change on coastal ecosystems.

“While we know what happens in extreme events, a lot of basic science needs to be done to understand the impacts of subtle warming events,” Prof.

Thrush said.

“Coastal marine systems support many ecosystem services such as providing habitat, sediment stabilisation, improving water clarity, storing carbon and processing nutrients. The research will focus on ecosystem functions that underpin these critical services.”

The project will involve using iron sand to simulate temperature rise at a number of small sample plots around the harbour. In particular, researchers will be looking at how the sediment processes carbon and nitrogen, and the impact of temperature rises on animals in the sediment.

“As far as I know, there have been no studies like this anywhere else in the world.”

Anyone on the estuary at low tide will see boxes buried in the sand, small wire pegs, black patches and probes in the sediment. Members of the public are asked to avoid the plots if possible.

The project field work will be done by marine biology student, Silvia Manzo (left), who recently arrived from Italy, and Kaiwen Yang, a marine technician based at the Leigh Laboratory.

The project is expected to start this month and will take six to eight weeks.

The second project will be funded under the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge and will look at the resilience of coastal ecosystems to change.

“Change doesn’t normally happen in a linear way so this project will identify potential thresholds in estuarine and coastal soft-sediment ecosystems. The aim is to identify where rapid change might happen before it happens.”

The project will involve researchers from a number of universities, as well as NIWA, and Whangateau Harbour will be one of many sites across NZ. Prof. Thrush said it was one of the largest marine experiments ever

undertaken in NZ. “The idea of ecosystem services is a poorly understood concept. Indigenous biodiversity and natural ecosystems contribute in a wide variety of ways to human wellbeing, through a whole suite of processes. It’s a matter of understanding the role that even microscopic organism play because they can be hugely important in maintaining the health of the overall system.”

The project is likely to start early next year and plots will be monitored over several years.

Prof. Thrush has been studying coastal ecological systems for more than 30 years and worked for NIWA before joining Auckland University.

There are two events are being held in Mahurangi this month to highlight the threat and challenges of climate change.

On Thursday October 20, Warkworth Forest and Bird will host a ‘Climate Roadshow’ at Totara Park Hall in Warkworth at 7.30pm.

Forest and Bird’s climate advocate Adelia Hallett will speak about the impacts of climate change on nature in Mahurangi and how conservation programmes can be adapted to mitigate these issues.

The Roadshow comes in the wake of the ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate Change. New Zealand has agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 11 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030.

Then on Friday October 28, Massey University Professor Robert McLachlan will give a free lecture on ‘Cutting carbon emissions at home and at work’.

Professor McLachlan says he will try to breakdown the complex climate change science and propose changes people can make every day at work and home.

“The solutions are already available to everyone, and many of them are winwin: better for the environment, for the economy, and for the consumer,” Professor McLachlan says.

“I hope it will lead to not a lecture, but a discussion about how all of us can cut our carbon emissions - easily, quickly and deeply.”

The talk will be held in the Old Masonic Hall Warkworth starting at 7.30pm.

New Rodney faces around Council table It’s a new era for local government in Rodney, with Penny Webster trounced

by Greg Sayers for the Rodney Ward Councillor position and six new members on the Rodney Local Board.

Former local board member Mr Sayers says the community was looking for change.

“I offered myself as the credible choice,” he says.

He says his top priorities will be sticking with the policy he campaigned for – “bring the rates home”.

He also wants to build a “powerful alliance” with the Local Board and Rodney MP Mark Mitchell.

“That will mean we can go in with a very strong and united mandate for Rodney going forward.”

Mrs Webster has been at the forefront of Rodney politics for nearly a decade after becoming Mayor of Rodney District Council in 2007. She went on to serve two terms as Rodney Ward Councillor and chaired the Finance and Performance Committee.

She says it was the hardest campaign she has been involved in and says the result shows discontent with Auckland Council, which she believes is misplaced.

“I think it was a vote against Council,” Mrs Webster says.

“The results show people haven’t understood what’s really going on.

Things aren’t as bad as people believe.”

Port Albert resident Colin Smith convincingly beat Wendy Crow-Jones to win the Wellsford Subdivision position, which was not contested by sitting member James Colville.

New political ticket Rodney First are calling a victory, with five of its six candidates being elected. It will have a majority voting block on the Board.

They had a clean-sweep in the Kumeu Subdivision, with Phelan Pirrie, former Orakei Councillor Cameron Brewer

and Brent Bailey all getting a tick, along with independent Brenda Steele.

Mike Francis was the only Rodney First candidate not to be elected.

Louise Johnston won the Dairy Flat Subdivision position, while sitting member Thomas Grace and John McLean were not re-elected.

Steven Garner missed out on both the Councillor and Local Board positions he stood for.

Mr Garner has served two terms on the Rodney Local Board, receiving the most votes of any candidate in Warkworth last election, and was deputy Board chair in the last term.

The Warkworth Subdivision of the Rodney Local Board had the highest turnout in mainland Auckland at 53.1 per cent. Only Great Barrier and Waiheke Island’s figures were higher, at 58.6 and 69.6 per cent respectively.

The Wellsford subdivision turnout was also higher than the Auckland average, with 44.8 per cent voting The Hibiscus & Bays Local Board’s Hibiscus Subdivision was third highest in mainland Auckland, with a 45.2 per cent turnout (Orakei came in second with 47.6 per cent).

Overall, voter turnout in Auckland was 38.25 per cent – slightly up on last election’s 35.5 per cent, but still well down on the 51 per cent recorded in 2010 when the councils amalgamated.

This mirrored a nationwide decline in voter turnout, which was 39.5 per cent, down 1.8 per cent on the last election.

Fresh start for Kaipara Kaipara District Council has its first mayor in over four years after Ruawai farmer and company director Greg Gent was elected by a strong majority.

Mr Gent easily won the position, gaining 4799 votes, well ahead of main rival Bruce Rogan who received 1256 votes.

He says the Commissioners have done a good job bringing stability to the Kaipara and he hopes to set priorities with the incoming Councillors and continue to tackle its $65 million debt.

“We’ve got to run as efficiently as we can to reduce debt,” Mr Gent says. “The other big thing is getting Council to work as a good, cohesive group. Like with any board, that will be a high priority.”

The new Council will be officially sworn in on October 25.

Mr Gent chairs the Southern Cross Health Group and FMG Insurance, but says he will reduce his commitments to focus on Council.

He chaired the three-person review team that led to Kaipara Councillors resigning and Commissioners being appointed. He was also made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to governance in 2012. In the Otamatea Ward, which includes Mangawhai, Libby Jones, Peter Wethey and Jonathan Larsen were elected.

Tawharanui love birds go walkabout A desire for a little romantic privacy may have been behind the escape of two critically endangered takahe from Tawharanui Regional Park recently.

The established pair – Kikorango and Whito – were detected beyond the park boundary during weekly radio telemetry monitoring late last month.

Open Sanctuary senior ranger Matt Maitland says it’s possible the pair escaped at low tide.

“The pest proof and takahē containment fences extend to the high tide but not below, meaning there is some opportunity for egress at low tide,” Matt says. “We have placed the takahē containment fence up to a headland to limit this low tide opportunity.”

The pair was retrieved 1.8km beyond the fence, about halfway to Omaha.

It is not known exactly how long they were at large, possibly anything from 24 hours to six days.

As to the reason for their escape, Matt says it is the beginning of the breeding season so the pair may have been looking for a more secluded breeding territory.

“Also, the dominant neighbouring group of three takahē had been encroaching into the regular territory of Kikorango and Whito so they may have felt pressured.”

The flightless birds were returned to the sanctuary no worse for their adventure.

They have been penned together with access to supplementary food to help them settle down and to help Whito, who has always been light, to gain weight.

“Our challenge is to minimise any territorial pressure between neighbouring groups of takahē so the birds are comfortable staying put, as they have been in the two years since coming to Tāwharanui.”

Tawharanui is home to 14 takahe including two new arrivals from the Burwood Bush takahe breeding unit, in Southland, who were delivered to the park on September 21.

The birds come from various island locations, including Tiritiri Matangi, and are reported to be settling in well.

There has been no confirmed breeding yet but this is only the second full breeding season at Tāwharanui and most of the birds are young.

“We are hopeful that some pairs or groups may nest this year,” Matt says.

There are only around 285 takahe left in the world.

TOSSI volunteers, who monitor the birds every week and in this case detected the escapees, were thanked for their part in the recapture and return of Kikorango and Whito.

Matt says it was a team effort involving Auckland Council park rangers and volunteers.

“We are also very grateful to our park neighbours who allowed access through their land.”

A number of giant, purple jellyfish having been washing up on Mahurangi shores recently.

Point Wells resident Rachael Frost discovered one at Point Wells this month and other specimens have been seen on Omaha Beach. Some are over 40cm in diameter.

DOC ranger David Wilson says they are probably a lion’s mane jellyfish – a species that is usually found in cold waters in the Northern Hemisphere and are not commonly found here.

The jellyfish can still sting, even when they are dead, so people are being warned not to touch them.

They are the largest known species of jellyfish and have up to 1200 tentacles that can grow to more than 30 meters in length.

In June 2010, a single specimen weighing 18kg was found off the coast of New Hampshire in the US, after 150 swimmers were stung.

Many bird books have a section on ‘Crakes and Rails’; a phrase that my brain stubbornly and consistently confuses with afternoon tea at a brewery. These types of bird are usually found feeding in marshes and other wet places, so perhaps it is not such a stupid association after all!

New Zealand was once home to at least 19 species of Gruiformes (the scientific order for this group). They ranged from the very small to two species of flightless adzebill standing over 80cm tall. In fact, the diversity of this group across the Pacific was staggering, as rails rapidly evolved into distinctive, flightless forms on virtually every Oceanic island.

Crakes and rails rely on camouflage and vegetation cover four protection from predators. This is a good strategy against the eyes of hawks, but less so against cats, stoats and other mammalian predators that hunt by smell, or against the persistence of human hunters. Consequently, most species were wiped out by the waves of human settlers and the mammalian predators that accompanied them.

Tawharanui Open Sanctuary is home to four very different members of this group. The pukeko has an extraordinary, complex and effective breeding biology and is common across pastures and wetlands. Many of the ‘pooks’ at Tawharanui wear leg-bands as part of a long-term study of their breeding habits by Canadian researchers. Banded rail, with their black-and-white striped chest and olivebrown back, are rarely seen, although there is a healthy population of them at the park. If you are patient, you may spy them at dawn and dusk feeding around the lagoon in their preferred habitat of mangroves and saltmarsh.

It takes more than just patience to see the spotless crake, an apt name for a small, secretive bird that is seldom sighted. If you are lucky, you will recognise them by their striking grey-blue and brown plumage and contrasting red eye.

The most celebrated member of this group is the takahe: large, flightless and oh-so-close to never being seen again prior to their famous re-discovery in 1948.

In the past month, two more takahe, Eddy and Ruiha, were released at the Open Sanctuary, bringing the total number at Tawharanui to 14 out of a current world population of just under 300! Despite their global scarcity, the takahe at Tawharanui are frequently seen and can sometimes be found idly posing for photos near the Anchor Bay Information Hut. Hopefully, they will concentrate on the serious business of increasing their population in the coming months.

Eight mature pohutukawa trees have been repeatedly poisoned in Mangawhai.

Pohutukawa grove poisoned Mangawhai Heads residents have called Police over repeated attempts to poison a block of Pohutukawa trees believed to be around 100 years old.

The Bowmar family have owned the property where the trees are being poisoned, at the end of Eveline Street, for over 60 years. Son-in-law Peter Ferguson is appealing for help from the community to find those responsible.

“This is the third time the trees have been poisoned and we’ve had enough,” Mr Ferguson says.

The poisoning started about three years ago when the family discovered an empty bottle of granulated weed killer and holes drilled in several trees.

“It’s obvious to us now after several

poisonings that the person responsible is trying to improve their view of the bar and Head Rock by killing a whole line of about eight trees.”

The poisoned trees have become dangerous and the family have spent thousands of dollars having branches removed.

“We had to trim them because they could easily have taken out power lines, destroyed buildings or even killed someone.”

Mangawhai Police Constable Dale Wewege says it’s difficult to obtain evidence in the case.

Region responds to Matakana fire At the end of last month there was a very big fire in a plastics factory in West Auckland. This was well covered in the news media. Locally, a few days later, in the early hours of the morning there was a large fire in a pack house on Matakana Road between Warkworth and Matakana. This brings home the reality that ‘big’ fires are not confined to ‘big’ cites. Country areas have their share too, as fire knows neither boundaries nor restriction. In particular, country fires can be even more of a problem due to the distance from backup stations and personnel, and also the lack of reticulated water supplies. About 14 fire appliances attended the Matakana Road fire, from stations as far afield as Mangawhai and several from Auckland. It included four water tankers from Mahurangi East, Matakana, Silverdale, and Mangawhai, as well as operational support vehicles. The tankers supplied water to the many fire trucks at the scene and then had to depart to refill from distant reticulated water supplies, before returning to the fire scene.

The Ahuroa crew set up portable pumps and drew water from nearby creeks to supplement the water supply. Crews remained at the scene for several hours to first of all put out the fire and then continue damping down hot spots. It is believed the cause of the fire was a fault at the switchboard.

The pack house, offices and chillers were destroyed in the fire and whilst sad, the good news is that no lives were lost – this is not always the case. Any life lost in a fire is one too many. After all, a building can be easily replaced, a life cannot.

On a different note, the Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade will celebrate 50 years over the weekend of November 18 to 20. All past members are invited to attend.

Further to this, the brigade is launching a book, Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade 50 Years, on Friday October 28 from 5pm, at the Leigh Fire Station.

Medal haul for Mahurangi breweries Four Mahurangi breweries won a total of 28 medals at this year’s Brewers Guild Awards in Auckland on October 8. Warkworth-based 8 Wired brewery did the best of the local brewers, winning 12 medals, including the trophy for best US ale and three golds in the pale ale, stout and experimental categories.

The Sawmill Brewery won six medals, including silver medals for its pilsner and schwarzbier. Forbidden Brewing Co, based at the Cider Shed north of Warkworth, won three medals, including silver for its pear cider, Perry Bomb.

McLeod’s Brewery, based in Waipu, won seven bronze medals.

Diamonds are supposed to be a girl’s best friend, but when California-native Greg Winegar started to grade diamonds for the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) he was also smitten.

“I absolutely fell in love with diamonds.

I could spend all day plotting and mapping their features through a microscope,” Greg says.

Greg and his wife Elly are the new owners of Kowhai Coast Jewellers on Queen Street in Warkworth.

Greg started out as a software test engineer, but says the US government’s Patriot Act after September 11 2001 made it difficult to share hi-tech expertise globally. He clearly remembers his first interview to start a new career at the GIA. “I lost the diamond! The lady interviewing me asked me to carry it into the next room. I heard the tweezers go ‘ping’ and then spent two hours looking for it.”

Greg eventually found the errant diamond in a box of tissues on the interviewer’s desk. He was offered a position and went on to attain the highest qualification in the industry.

He travelled the world working in the jewellery business until he met his wife, Elly, in San Diego, in 2009. He initially told her he was a geologist so that she wouldn’t be bedazzled by his connection with diamonds.

Two months after they first meet they were married – with two $40 plain silver wedding bands.

After leaving the high-pressure world of marketing and management to become a glass artist, Inge Chappell is combining her talents and starting a new, expanded gallery in Warkworth.

Kleur Gallery & Makerspace, on 2A Kapanui Street, opened last month, selling work from artists around the region, including art glass, jewellery, paintings, ceramics, clothing, homeware and handcrafted gifts.

She says her primary goal is to promote local and New Zealand art.

“I would describe the new space as an art and craft gallery which offers a range of collectable art work as well as very accessible and attractive handmade products and gifts,” she says.

“It seems there is a really strong demand for quality, handmade art and craft in the Mahurangi area, especially with the region expanding and tourism growing.”

Inge has set up her own studio at the gallery and also holds regular workshops on glass bead making, glass fusing, silverwork and jewellery making.

She hopes the gallery will be a space that supports established artists and also encourages developing artists.

“There can be a lot of barriers for artists, to get their work shown in galleries outside exhibitions and although the internet and personal networks can help a great deal, art is still largely purchased by people who had no clear intention to buy before coming in and seeing something

After spending two years in Italy, the couple decided to move back to NZ where Elly had spent her formative years.

“From the moment I got off the plane I felt I was at home,” Greg says.

Greg loves to design and make bespoke jewellery and he plans to offer a computer-aided design service with a 3D printer to produce prototypes.

He will sell new ranges of jewellery and watches, and will be a licensed gold and jewellery buyer when the shop has been refurbished.

He will also offer insurance valuation services and plans to have full jewellery workshop facilities in the future. He says the old adage of spending three months salary on an engagement ring isn’t necessary.

“Jewellery is not an investment, it’s emotional and it should make you happy no matter what the cost.”

Inge worked in marketing and project management before deciding on a career change to work in a more creative field.

She studied glass through various tutors and did a silversmith course at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School. From there, she set up a studio at her Puhoi home to produce her line of handmade glass jewellery and sculptures.

Last year, she took the plunge and opened a studio-gallery space on Elizabeth Street in Warkworth and its popularity lead to the formation of Kleur Gallery.

“We’ve been extremely busy since opening and the community has been very encouraging and complimentary.”

KAWAU ISLAND LOCAL NEWS: Jewel of the Hauraki Gulf Kawau islanders may be low in numbers, but they have a seemingly endless supply of energy for community led projects that keep the island alive.

Eight active community organisations are involved in everything from protecting flora and fauna to promoting tourism on the island.

Naturally, a love of boating is the major draw card for most islanders.

When the Kawau Boating Club closed in April 2014, locals and boaties rallied.

On Labour a few months later, the club was officially back up and running and it has almost 800 members now.

The club has received a $10,000 grant from the Rodney Local Board to upgrade the ablutions block and provide a laundry and cold storage facility. The facilities are due to be completed in time for the club’s reopening after winter on October 14.

The club’s next project is to provide 24-hour fuelling.

Real estate agent Dave Jeffery has lived on Kawau for 13 years and says living on the island appeals to an eclectic range of people.

“From hippies to brain surgeons and everyone between, there isn’t really a typical islander,” Dave says.

He believes Kawau has yet to reach its full potential having been on the periphery of the recent housing boom.

“I have around 30 listings, so we don’t have that lack of supply that fuels the market. If you’re looking to build, land here is around half the price of the mainland.”

He says that traditionally, the island was a place for second homes, but

many of those are on the market because owners don’t have time to use them.

That has encouraged more permanent residents looking for better value property and predominantly working from home.

Paul (Taz) Strauss and his partner Alison moved to South Cove from West Auckland last year. Taz says fast broadband available via WiFi from Snells Beach was the deciding factor.

“We run computer repair and web design companies. I get around 40 MBPS broadband on the island – that’s more than I did in Auckland,” Taz says.

To overcome the island’s isolation, the Kawau Emergency Response Trust (KERT) was formed to fundraise for first responders. Trust chair Ken Wells says they provide a wide range of emergency equipment.

“We’ve financed a jet ski to get first responders to emergencies around the island, as well as defibrillators, medical equipment, helipads, and three 25,000 litre water tanks for firefighting,” Ken says.

by Organisations Passionate About Kawau (OPAK). Group member Helen Jeffery says the initiative came about to help the island’s tourism.

“In 2013, Mansion House was closed and tourist numbers had gone down,” Helen says. “KERT had run a jazz festival in South Cove for a few years and I thought ‘why don’t we do a jazz festival at Mansion House’.”

The inaugural event in 2014 sold-out, with 450 attendees. The event is now in it’s fourth year and has increased to host 750 people.

Last year it raised $18,000 for Volunteer Coastguard, Camp Bentzon and KERT.

KAWAU CONSERVATION Kawau trails reopen Tracks that have been closed on Kawau due to safety concerns are being reopened.

All seven kilometres of tracks were closed last May because of dangerous overhanging pine branches. Coach Road and Two House tracks have since reopened following extensive arborist work.

Most of the pines were planted by Sir George Grey to provide a picturesque backdrop for Mansion House. The Department of Conservation (Doc) ranger David Wilson says that some need harvesting as they are reaching the end of their life.

“We will leave the Redwoods track and the area around the back of Mansion House, but we will remove hazardous pines, and create regeneration and native restoration planting.”

Kawau Island covers over 2000ha and, since 1987, Doc has managed around 10 per cent of it. Although the island is currently without a permanent ranger, Doc is looking for a replacement.

Conservation work is focused on the Kawau Island Historic Reserve, which covers 258ha. David says the island’s eclectic past provides plenty of ongoing conservation challenges.

“Wallabies are one of the biggest problems. They have an enormously detrimental effect on vegetation. The only things that grow well are things that wallabies don’t eat.”

Doc has reduced wallaby numbers, but it would take an island-wide agreement from landowners to eradicate them completely.

Sir Grey planted hundreds of species of plants and imported exotic animals including wallabies, kookaburras, weka, peacocks, zebras and monkeys.

The zebras and monkeys have gone but the wallabies, weka and peacocks remain.

The usual mix of stoats, rats and possums also threaten the island’s population of brown kiwi and weka.

David says the island is home to one of the biggest populations of North Island weka and the kiwi population is around 40.

Mansion House is open to the public from midday for two hours during the week and three-and-a-half hours on weekends. Doc also has a volunteer programme on the island, which varies from one day a month to a five day stint.

PAST TENSE Origins Kawau in Te Reo Maori is the cormorant or shag. Kawau Island is believed to be named after Kawaupaka – the little white throated shag, which breeds on the island.

The island is associated with the early Maori ancestor Toitehuatahi and later by descendants of the crews of the Arawa and Tainui.

Conflict occurred in the 18th century between the resident Kawerau and the Marutuahu collective of tribes.

The result of the attack ended in a cannibalistic feast in Bostaquet Bay, where human bones have been discovered.

Following debate over ownership, the island was sold to W.T. Fairburn of the North British Australasian Loan and Investment Company in the 1840s.

A copper mine was opened in 1846 and produced around 2500 tonnes of ore. The ruins of the mine’s 20-metre smelting chimney are still visible today.

Sir George Grey brought the island in 1862 and turned the mine superintendents home into what is now called Mansion House. It’s been in public ownership since 1967.

Meal service looking for new mouths to feed As more people move to the area, a local not-for-profit group is promoting a free frozen meal delivery service.

Annette Carr delivers about 200 meals a week, but has noticed a slight decline in demand recently and wants to get the word out about the service.

“Anybody can use it, whether you are recovering from a health issue or just too busy to cook,” Annette says. “It’s not just for ‘oldies’.”

The service is run by the Rodney Health Charitable Trust (formerly Northlink Health).

Delivery is free for people in

Warkworth and Snells Beach and meals can also be collected from Warkworth by prior arrangement.

Proceeds from the service are used to support Warkworth Wellsford Hospice.

“It all comes back to the community.”

Meals cost between $4.50 and $8.50 with gluten-free and vegetarian options available. Orders need to be placed on Tuesdays for the Wednesday morning delivery.

Brochures with a full menu are available at chemists and medical centres.

A Food Rescue service which started in Warkworth in August is already being heralded as a huge success.

One one day alone last month, more than 300kg of food was collected.

The volunteer service was launched by Rotary and Lions members, and is based at the Warkworth Court House building.

Presbyterian Church parish manager Roger Mackay distributes the food via the Foodlink initiative to schools, churches and community service providers in the area.

“I picked up 300 kilos from Countdown alone. It’s fantastic,” Roger says. “I am now looking to increase the number of outlets that can distribute the food to needy families.”

Roger also received 100kg of pet food which went to The Animal Sanctuary in Matakana.

Octogenarian rides 232km for hospice Eighty-three year old Warkworth resident Jim Sonerson rode non-stop for six hours at the Kowhai Festival Huge Day Out on October 8, raising over $420 for Warkworth Wellsford Hospice. Jim covered a total distance of 232.37 km on his trainer bike’s computer and averaged 38.72 kph. A competition was held to guess the total distance he biked. “I was pretty tired, but I’m pleased to have raised that money,” Jim says. Bob Deans of Warkworth won the competition prize of two nights at the Heritage Auckland, courtesy of helloworld. “Bob wanted me to take his prize,” Jim says. “We decided it should go to Hospice and they will give it to a couple of their patients who are in need of a break.”

When an employer plays a positive role in providing support for a worker who is affected by family violence or abuse, it can be of real benefit to both parties. The worker gets the support they need and the employer is likely to have less staff absenteeism, a reduction in staff turnover and improved productivity. It makes sense that employees who are well supported are less distracted and stressed and will contribute more to a business.

Family violence is any behaviour which controls or intimidates someone in your family or household. It can be physical, sexual, emotional or psychological, including things such as threats, intimidation, yelling, harassment or damage to property. The sooner we reach out to someone who is living with family violence, the sooner they can get help. Also, the sooner we reach out to someone who is being violent or abusive, the sooner they can get help and the abuse can stop.

There are a number of straightforward ways an employer can play their part in supporting a worker who is facing family violence or abuse. Displaying an ‘It’s Not OK’ poster with the free phone information line number on it (0800 456 450) in the staff bathroom or on the work notice board is a simple step.

This number can link people up with local support services and provide a wide range of other information and support. These free posters can either be ordered from the It’s Not OK website (areyouok.org.nz), or you can pick one up from Homebuilders office at 5 Hexham Street in Warkworth.

If an employee approaches you because they are facing family violence or abuse, don’t feel you need to be an instant expert to be useful and supportive. Just saying, ‘I’m glad you said something, can I give you the number of someone who can talk the whole thing through with you’ is a great start. The main tip is to believe the person and not to blame them for being abused. So it’s important to avoid saying things like, ‘Why do you let him treat you that way?’ This is because the blame lies squarely with the abuser, not the victim.

The main message from the It’s Not OK campaign is also worth repeating: “Family violence isn’t ok, but it is ok to ask for help”.

Supporting employees who are going through a tricky time will increase your reputation as a good employer. Taking worker wellbeing seriously gets noticed by your staff and works in the interests of both parties.

Ready steady Matakana School gala Matakana School gala organisers are expecting another early morning stampede of bargain hunters when the gates open at 7.30am on Saturday October 22.

Event administrator Helen Ujdur says the generosity of the local community donating quality goods means bargain hunters arrive early.

“We are here at 5am and there is always a group of people waiting,” Helen says.

“By 7am there is a large crowd and when we ring the bells it’s literally a running race to the bargains.”

The gala raised $35,000 last year, despite bad weather. Helen says this year they are hoping for sunny conditions to help reach the highs of three years ago when it raised $53,000.

“I think there was a civil defence warning in place last year and people still came, but we need better weather this year,” Helen says.

Helen estimates around 3000 people attend the event each year and organisers will again stick with the gala favourites.

Larger donated goods will fill the netball courts outside with everything from bikes to surfboards.

All the fun of the fair can be found on the school field, including bouncy castles, inflatable activities, bungee rides, miniature cars, Zorb balls and sideshows, plus the always-popular crockery smash.

The stage in the center courtyard will have live entertainment from the schoolchildren and a DJ. Last year the range of food provided was extended to cater for special

diets, such as vegetarian and glutenfree. Other food on offer includes the ever-popular bacon and egg butties, plus authentic Thai curries, burgers, nachos, waffles, sausage sizzles, candyfloss and doughnuts. A range of sweet homemade delicacies will also be available at the cake stalls.

A portion of the funds raised will go towards the school’s ongoing project of building a dome cover for the netball courts. The project is estimated to cost around $300,000 and student class councillors put the concept forward to provide an all-weather play area.

One-man-band Graeme James is playing at the Leigh Sawmill Cafe on Sunday October 23 as part of a nationwide tour.

Graeme has become renowned for his multi-instrument sets, creating a symphony of sound by jumping from violin to guitar, baritone ukulele, and beatboxing, all layered through a loop pedal.

He describes his sound as danceable folk and started busking in Wellington, creating unique covers of pop songs, with quirky instrumentations.

He performed at the Sawmill last year, inviting members of the audience onstage for an impromptu jam session which wowed the audience.

Stalls aplenty at Leigh gala The Leigh Community Preschool Gala is taking on a market theme this year to broaden its appeal to the community.

The gala will be held at Leigh School on Sunday October 23, from 8am to 2pm.

Organiser Georgie Brebner says there will be a broad range of goods and produce, as well as classics, such as Devonshire tea.

“We are making it more of a funky market gala to try and pool more people. It’s not just for school kids,” Georgie says.

The Leigh Markets, which started earlier this year, will be one of the new additions.

There will also be a plant sale, which will include seedlings, herbs, vegetables and flowers, supported by Tumbleweed, Liberty Park and the Protea Patch nurseries.

Fresh produce will be available from a range of local growers and Whangateau Roses will also have a stall.

There will be a vintage clothing market, secondhand book stalls and ‘pre-loved treasures’ stall.

Classic gala entertainment will be back including merry-go-rounds, mini hot rods, bouncy castles and the iconic giant ice slide.

On the menu at the market will be traditional Devonshire tea and freshly baked scones, burgers and other gourmet food. There will also be a

That’s the message from the organisers of this year’s club calf day on October 24, at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex.

Otamatea group treasurer Suzanne Partridge says around five trophies have gone missing, some of them for many years.

“We’ve been going for more than 60

years. We could make new trophies, but we would lose the history because they have been engraved with the names of past winners,” Suzanne says.

The club day is open to all students, with categories for calves, lambs and goats. The competition is run between Waipu, Matakohe, Tauhoa and Tomarata schools. Entries close on October 21. For more details or to return a past trophy, check with your local school.

What can I plant now?

• Top of the list would be the summer vegetables that can be harvested in the months after Christmas. If you’ve got plenty of sun on your garden now, plant capsicum, chillies, zucchini and aubergines. Maybe try a cucumber from Labour Weekend on.

A piping good time is promised at the Celtic Fyre event.

Raising Highland spirits Two Celtic concerts will be held in Waipu this Labour Weekend as a fundraiser to recoup losses from the washed-out Highland Games in January.

The event, dubbed Celtic Fyre, will be held at the Celtic Barn on Sunday October 23, with a 2pm matinee performance and an evening show at 7pm.

The two concerts will feature seven Celtic performances, headlined by internationally recognised and multiaward winning fiddler Marian Burns, with the McSweeney Brothers.

There will also be local Celtic band Twisty Willow, Irish group Anam Cara, the NorthCal Pipers, the New Generation Ceilidh Band, soloist Enya Finlayson and ‘Brucey from the Bog’.

The first stage of the Waipu cycle trail opened in August.

Waipu fun run fundraiser for future cycle trail Waipu Cycle and Walkway Trust is holding a fun run on Sunday October 30 to raise money for a walkway/ cycleway linking Waipu to Waipu Cove.

There will be a 5km and 10km walk/ run and a 3km or 7km mountain bike.

The event starts at 315 Massey Road in the foothills of the Brynderwyns.

The Waipu cycleway will be about 10km when finished. The first 2.5km of the cycleway opened in August and

runs from Waipu village to Riverview Place. The entire walkway is expected to cost about $1 million.

Of these, I’m most exercised by the potential for mozzie invasion. I hate the little suckers and unfortunately Point Wells, with its sheltered subtropical conditions and lots of open drains, is ground zero. So, aside from the obvious Deet-based sprays and an endless list of natural remedies and mozzie repelling plants (I’m not entirely convinced these work), what strategies should be employed to combat them?

First of all, go around your property and empty every single container that holds even the smallest amount of water (they can breed in even a cupful of water).

Make sure drains are flowing freely (mozzie larvae don’t like moving water) and drain or fill in any standing puddles. Check your gutters are clear and draining properly and water tanks have tight fitting lids. Any ornamental ponds, even small ones, should have goldfish in them as goldfish are voracious larvae eaters.

Then, out comes the biological warfare; Bti – Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis to use its full moniker. These are bacteria that, once ingested by the larvae, produces a toxin in their gut that kills them in about a day. They are completely safe for humans and most other forms of life and, thankfully, there is no need to be a mad scientist. I can buy these bacteria from most garden centres or hardware stores that sell garden products in a handy spreadable form called Mozzie Bits or Mozzie Stop. Gun club sets sites on Ahuroa Makarau residents are concerned the area’s peace and quiet is under fire after a gun club got the go ahead to open a shooting range.

Auckland Council has issued a Certificate of Compliance (COC), which permits the club to build an outdoor pistol range on a 37ha site on Tuhirangi Road, just off SH16 near Gibbs Farm.

The range can be operational between 6am and 6pm for a maximum of eight hours a day.

Club spokesperson and landowner Raymond O’Brien says media reports in the New Zealand Herald that the club will disrupt neighbours, including the Vipassana meditation centre “twodoors” away, were exaggerated.

“Two doors? It’s over a kilometre away through two valleys and a forest. Until recently our land was used as a motocross track and that makes far more noise than pistols,” Mr OBrien says.

But local resident Bruce Lawrence, who lives about three kilometres away, says he is concerned about the noise.

“We hear gunshots and dirt-bikes now and then, that’s fine, but not seven days

a week,” Mr Lawrence says.

The news of the plans spread quickly via the community’s Facebook page after a local resident stumbled across the plans online.

Mr O’Brien defended his decision not to communicate with residents about the shooting range.

“When we had detailed plans and a timeline we intended to speak to people, but they will either love it or hate it, there isn’t much room in between.” Mr O’Brien says.

Mr Lawrence says he is sceptical of the club’s future intentions.

“The club’s website indicates they plan to be the biggest club in New Zealand, with rifles and shotguns. This appears to be a relatively underhanded way of starting and gaining support to make these future plans possible,” Mr Lawrence says.

Mr O’Brien says the Auckland Shooting Club hopes to open in June next year.

He says any future expansion will have to go through Council for approval.

“It’s clear on our website these are future plans.”

Appeal launched for Tomarata festival site A proposal for a major festival hub in Tomarata is back on the table as an Environment Court appeal has been launched. Tomarata resident Arnim Pierau is proposing to hold up to 34 events a year at his 32-hectare property, which borders Slipper Lake and Lake Spectacle on Ocean View Road. A resource consent application to permit the events was declined in August after 34 people submitted opposing the plan. Mr Pierau is appealing the decision, saying independent hearings commissioners got it wrong. A date is yet to be set for the appeal.

Ti Point forest harvest next year The harvest of the Auckland Councilowned Ti Point forest is expected to start next year.

Council’s property arm, Panuku Development, initially expected to harvest the 14.5ha forest in 2013, however work was delayed after kauri snails were found on the property.

A Panuku report from November last year said tenders had also been unsuccessful and it would have to retender the contract.

In 2014, Panuku said proceeds from the forest would be about $150,000.

However, Panuku director of portfolio management Ian Wheeler now says it is too difficult to estimate the profit until the contract has been let.

“Ti Point is unique as it is an old quarry site and closed landfill, is near a main road with power lines which are very close to the area to be harvested,” Mr Wheeler says. “These factors are likely to impact on the cost of harvesting in this location. Until we have an agreed price with a contractor, we cannot say what the harvest is worth.”

The yield is estimated to be 69507200 tonnes.

Council is responsible for allocating the proceeds. A Council spokeswoman says the proceeds would be returned to a general funding pool.

The future of the site is yet to be determined.

The passage of seasons may be less apparent for city dwellers than it is for those in the country, particularly people who work on the land. As a migrant from the city, albeit a long time ago, I still never tire of watching seasonal change in the vines.

There are few more obvious expressions of seasonality than that displayed by grape vines and change in the vineyard is perhaps more outrageously manifest in spring than any other season. On what appear to be lifeless vines, buds swell slowly over several weeks, gathering power before their big bang – their burst into riotous expansion, rather like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. Dozens of thin pale green parallel lines snake across the hillside in an eye-pleasing geometry. In coming weeks the thin lines gradually thicken until they merge into a rich green carpet.

Close up amongst the vines at this time growth is so fast it seems almost visible.

Vineyard workers must ensure that the moveable foliage wires are correctly spaced so fast-growing new shoots are protected from wind damage and channeled upward for orderly development of emerging leaves and inflorescences. New shoots are vulnerable to the vagaries of spring weather – frequent rain showers and often fierce winds – but wind also has a drying effect on new foliage to help protect against fungal disease.

At this time of year, with the annual cycle starting, winegrowers’ thoughts turn again toward the promise which their vines will fulfill a few months hence.

Hard-bitten vineyard managers in muddy gumboots have been heard waxing lyrical about the miracle emerging before their eyes.

Poets have commemorated springtime forever, but it is difficult to convey in words what this new beginning really means to those whose livelihood is so directly influenced by the latent potential symbolised so powerfully in grape vines at this time of year.

Goats on small blocks Goats are interesting creatures. They are thought of as clean and acceptable, intelligent, playful, sensitive and responsive. But they also have a reputation for being stubborn, impulsive, unpredictable, devious, eating things they shouldn’t, being escape artists and going downhill quickly when they get sick. Their independent streak and tendency not to mob up as well as sheep and cattle possibly got them their “worst press” ever, when Jesus said that on His return, he would separate people like a shepherd separates his sheep from his goats. On His right hand would be the sheep, redeemed and saved to eternal life and on His left would be the goats, condemned and lost to eternal punishment. The warning was for people but the latter, small ruminants were scapegoats.

Goats came from dry, sandy or rocky lands. They don’t like rain and must always have access to somewhere to get out of bad weather. Their need for shelter is greater than other stock. Walking on our wet soils, their feet will need regular attention. Goats are born browsers not grazers. Their ancestors ate shrubbery above the level where their faeces fell, so they have not evolved the same amount of natural resistance to internal parasitism that sheep and cattle have. The more your goats are forced to graze on the grass they walk on and the more goats you have on a small area then the more important regular worming becomes. Give your animals access to fresh water and access to plenty of roughage like hay, shrubbery cuttings or weeds like thistles, blackberry or gorse. Even though they have a reputation for having iron guts, capable of disposing of your neighbour’s washing, they will get sick and may die if they eat poisonous plants such as oleander, rhododendron, geraniums, daphne, rhubarb leaves, castor oil plant and privet. Very small amounts of concentrate feeds are OK, but, like other ruminants, goats will ferment easily digestible carbohydrates. A goat eating a whole loaf of bread could develop a fatal acidosis. Vaccinate against clostridial diseases (“5 in 1”).

In the past in NZ, animal guardianship meant providing adequate food, water and shelter and not treating them ‘cruelly’. But more and more animal welfare is seen as giving animals the freedom to express their natural behaviours. Goats like jumping and climbing. How often, driving around our countryside, do you see a goat on top of its house or a tree stump? If you must tether yours on a running lead, take time to set it up so that it can’t get strangled or caught up, unable to move. Goats are sociable animals. Ideally they would be in a group but, if not, then let them interact, or at least see humans and other animals regularly.

The sports fields at Centennial Park in Wellsford will undergo a major upgrade over summer.

The work will be done by Auckland Council and will include laying a full sand carpet on the main rugby field, renewing the drainage system and installing underground irrigation with a connection to the town supply on the main field.

“The renewal of this field is the next step in increasing the park’s playing capacity,” Council sports parks manager Grant Jennings says.

“The newly-installed floodlights are a great addition to the park, but we need these improvements to the playing field to maximise its use.”

The work, set to start this month, is the first major renovation on the field since it was constructed.

It will cost an estimated $250,000 and is expected to be finished around midApril.

Wellsford Rugby committee member Mick Sweetman says that while the main field is in good condition, the area surrounding the fields has become very muddy over winter.

“The field is one of the better surfaces for rugby in Northland,” he says. “It retains a good amount of grass over dry periods and drains freely.”

Both Mick and Centennial Park Advisory Committee chair Graham McRae are more concerned about the condition of the second field.

As it stands, field number two will undergo fertiliser applications and will

be cored during the spring renovation season.

Mick says he appreciates Council’s contribution to improving the facility but questions the order in which the renovation is being done. He believes field number two should be a priority in terms of drainage while number one remains in reasonable condition.

Mr Jennings says that the New Zealand Sports Turf Institute undertook the investigation work and deemed the sand carpet under the main field to be contaminated with organic matter and worm castings, making drainage more difficult.

“Their report states that although the number one field still drains, it is not at the required rate to provide the expected 20 to 22 hours of use per week for a normal flood-lit sand field.

“As a result, we are only achieving 10 to 12 hours. The irrigation will help keep the grass surface in tact over the summer period.”

Mr Jennings says because field number two is soil based, as opposed to sand based, its hard to make a fair comparison.

He says consultation was held with all sporting bodies and the season start will be delayed to allow the work to be finished.

Mick says this will mean that the Wellsford rugby sides will have to play at least their pre-season fixtures on the average condition second field.

Omaha based Waka Ama Club member Laurie Atkins (Skin) has snatched gold at the Long Distance Nationals event held in Tauranga on September 30.

The race was over 17.5 kilometres, where Laurie battled in the gold masters category against two other competitors.

“I almost didn’t enter because I don’t like losing and I wasn’t expecting to come first,” he says.

Laurie is used to winning after four golds and two silvers in the event, but hadn’t competed since 2008.

At 66, he was expecting a younger paddler in his category to win.

“My nearest rival was in front of me for most of the race and I just managed to pick the right line and beat him at the finish.

“Mentally it was quite challenging chasing him down but even tougher with the conditions.”

Laurie says it was the roughest seas he has ever raced in, with swells up to three metres.

“There were people falling out of their boats and waka ama getting smashed up on the rocks.”

Prems gearing up for season double

The Kaipara Flats Premiers are looking to capture both the Lion Red Cup and Oxford Trust Two Day Competition this season.

Last season the team was successful in winning the two-day tournament but fell short of City Prems in the one-day affair.

“It’s our goal to win everything,” captain Kevin Forde says.

“After finally getting the monkey off our back with the two-day competition we would like to defend that title.”

Kevin says on paper Kaipara is the best side in the competition this season, but getting the result on the day is always a different matter.

The team has thrived on a strong bowling line up in the past, but nurturing good batsman has been difficult. The pre-season training focus has mainly been around batting strategy and technique.

“It’s about applying a proactive style of cricket to your game and learning to counteract a bowler’s plan. Learning to be patient and to understand the conditions will force our opposition to make mistakes if our guys can be disciplined in doing that.”

To help assist the cause, Irish players, Paddy Beverland and Aaron Wright, will join the batting line-up this season.

Five students from Rodney College and five from Otamatea High School will attend the 2016 ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sports Awards finalists event at the ASB Stadium in Whangarei on October 27.

They were drawn from a record 340 nominations, which was culled to 163 students from 21 schools across the Northland region.

Representing Rodney College will be Georgia Brierly and Sapphire Norburn Cormak who compete in athletics, golfer Tarrin Rous, ParaFed athlete Brennan Massey and surfer Joseph Critchfield.

The Otamatea High School representatives are Danyon Tana for basketball, Tyler Porteous in equestrian, footballer Joshua Nishitani-Hart, netballer Shuntel Rika and squash player Annmarie Holst.

The awards will host competitors from a total of 43 sports with ASB Excellence Awards available to those codes not offered in schools, and Sportsman and Sportswoman Awards for those sports recognised by schools.

The event will also mark the 25th anniversary of the Northland schools sporting awards and a number of past winners are expected to attend.

Mahurangi College student Jordon Thomas captained his North Harbour team to silver at the boy’s U13 Hatch Hockey Tournament in Christchurch this month.

Jordon was top scorer at the tournament by 10 goals, scoring a total of 19 goals in eight games.

“The key to being top goal scorer was probably just confidence and pure determination,” Jordon says.

“But, practice makes perfect and

sometimes it was just basics that I scored goals from.”

The 19 goals included two hat-tricks and six goals in one match against Waikato.

North Harbour were beaten 3-0 in the final by home side Canterbury.

“There isn’t really much to blame for our loss in the final. A few calls from the umpires didn’t go our way and sometimes our trapping was a little loose.”

Jordon says Canterbury was just better on the day but that second in New Zealand is still an awesome

achievement, and after coming fourth last year, getting a medal was pleasing.

He says it was great to beat rivals Auckland in the semi-final 2-0, which he rated as the toughest game of the tournament.

Harbour was also forced into a close battle in the pool stages after a 1-1 draw with Northland, meaning their play-off opponents were decided by the overall goals scored at the tournament.

“If we came second in our pool we would have played Canterbury in our quarter-final, meaning our hard work early on really paid off.”

Jordon says his experience from last

year’s tournament helped him push the side through some close matches, but that he also learnt plenty along the way.

“I think every tournament adds confidence and skill to your game.

Using those skills, he has high aspirations for his future hockey.

“My short-term goal is to get into the U15 North Harbour A team and the Mahurangi College first XI next year, and then captain the team the following year.

“My long-term goal is to be in the Black Sticks when I’m 20 and hopefully, play in the 2024 Olympics.”
