Grooming and Hygiene Standards

Professional Appearance Hygiene

1. All colleagues are expected to start duty with a neat and clean appearance which is maintained throughout their shift. Colleagues are expected to shower or bath (daily) and take care of their personal hygiene regularly to avoid strong odors that may cause disturbance among colleagues and guests. An effective antiperspirant must always be used but the scent should be discreet. 2. Showers are located in the locker rooms; towels are provided at the uniform counter.

Smoking

1. Smoking is only allowed in the designated colleague smoking area. Teeth should be brushed and hands should be washed after smoking and before returning to duty.

Hair

1. Colleagues handling food and drink or machinery must observe extreme care regarding length of hair and wear protective headwear with no loose hair exposed.

Ladies

2. Visible leg and facial hair must be removed. 3. Hair longer than shoulder length must be tied back neatly for any guest contact position. 4. Fringes must be styled away from the face and eyes.

5. Hair must be one consistent color and aligned with the original and have a natural appearance. Funky colours eg, red, pink, blue etc are not permitted at work. 6. Hair accessories must blend with the natural color of your hair, should be of simple design and they should not be distracting to the guests or co-workers. Only appropriate sized, natural colored hairpins must be worn. 7. Hair styles should maintain a fresh appearance throughout shifts. 8. Hair gel or mousse should be used modestly to smooth and style the hair. Wet look or excessive use of hair gel is not permitted. 9. Hair styles must maintain a conservative appearance and should be trimmed regularly. Styles of extreme or trendy nature are not permitted whilst on duty. 10. Kitchen colleagues will be required to cover long hair tied up with a bun net whilst on duty.

Men

1. Hair must be clean and neatly styled so that it remains in place while working. 2. Hair must not touch the shirt collar at the back or at the side.

3. Sideburns must not be lower than the middle ear or wider than 1 inch (2.5cm) 4. The following styles are not permitted: spiky, ponytail, long peak. 5. Hair gel or mousse should be used modestly to smooth and style the hair. Wet look or excessive use of hair gel is not permitted. 6. Beards and moustaches are not permitted. Should you wish to grow a beard then it must be done during vacation time and neatly groomed at all times. 7. If you work in preparation areas of Food and Beverage Service you are not permitted any form of facial hair.

Ladies Cosmetics

1. Make-up should be worn and applied in a conservative, complimenting manner. 2. Henna should not be visible for all colleagues. 3. Foundation should be applied in natural colors matching with skin tone. 4. Lipstick and blush should be worn in conservative colors. Lip liners should match the color of the lipstick. Lipstick colors should remain neutral. Red lipstick may be worn if it suits your natural complexion. 5. Eyebrows must be trimmed regularly. Eyebrow pencil and mascara should be black or brown.

6. Makeup with excessive shimmers and glitter is not permitted.

Ladies Nails

1. Nails should be kept at a reasonable length, just above the lip of the finger, clean and neat at all times. 2. Nail polish may be applied in neutral, transparent or dark red except for kitchen and food and beverage colleagues. 3. Nail decorations are not allowed.

Gentlemen’s Nails:

1. Nails should be kept short, clean and neat. 2. Nails should be manicured regularly to conservative length on all fingers

Hosiery

1. For uniformed and non-uniformed colleagues during duty, tights or stockings should be worn with skirts at all times. If a uniform is designed with trousers, black socks or kneehigh hosiery should be worn. 1. Hosiery with skirts and dresses should be plain, skin colored, free of runs and holes.

Shoes

1. All uniformed staff must wear the shoes provided. 2. If wearing their own, should be leather or leather like shoes and should be clean, polished daily and not run down.

Ladies Jewellery and Accessories

1. One ring on one hand on the ring finger is allowed, alternatively engagement or wedding band are allowed. 2. No fashion rings, thumb or nose rings should be worn. 3. Earrings are restricted to a maximum of one on each ear lobe. Only studded earrings or small hoops (50 fils size) of the same design are allowed. 4. Anklets are not permitted. 5. Bracelets and wrist bandsare not permitted. 6. No tattoos or henna painting must be visible. 7. Neck chains should have a simple design and must be worn in a discrete manner. 8. Watches must be conservative style only, no large-face watche

Gentlemen’s Jewellery

1. One ring only on one hand on the ring finger is allowed, no further jewelry is allowed. 2. Bracelets and wrist bands are not permitted. 3. Tattoos and piercings must not be visible. 4. Note: Kitchen staff should not wear any jewelry except wedding rings.

What must be avoided?

1. Clothes that are frayed, faded, stained or un-pressed. 2. Underarm staining. 3. Missing buttons, hooks etc. 4. Clothes which are too tight. 5. Bra and panty line showing front or back. 6. Badly fitting hosiery that bags around the lower leg.

7. Hosiery that have a run. 8. Dark/coloured lingerie and hosiery with light color uniform. 9. Underwear which shows below hemline or at skirt waist.

10. Skirts that are above your knee. 11. Dandruff or bits on clothes.

12. Makeup or dirt on collars. 13. Un-kept nails –chipped nail polish or too long. 14. Fragrance thatis too strong. Any uniform alterations must be approved by the Director of Housekeeping before submission to the Hotel Tailor. Any unauthorized uniform alteration may be subject to replacement at the cost of the colleague.

Non-Uniformed Attire

For those exceptions who have been offered an opt out option, it is the intention that the business attire worn to work is in line with the hotel overall look and feel of the current uniform. The following shall apply: The suit should be black or dark charcoal

The shirt or blouse should be white

Shoes should be black and well-polished.
