After the parliament, the law was passed to the house of elders and after hug lobbying the Guurti also took the same footsteps of their next-door law making neighbor , the House of Representatives. However, SONYO is grateful to both the upper and lower house of parliament who paid back the gratitude their youth had on them when they elected them and put MPs on the law making national seats.

THE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES: In Expensive Medium for the Youth To Reflect On the Issues that Concerns their lives!

D E S I G N

In conclusion the social networking sites provided the youngster a golden opportunities other media out lets did not provide if its a free communication, exchange of information, mobilization, being updated on both world and local events, connecting to the global world and many more! However, the youth must recognize this opportunity and make sure to utilize it the best possible way yet, the youth should keep in mind the adverse negative influences that can be obtained from being obsessed with the use of these sites.

G R A P H I C

The fact is, before the unprecedented mass Face bookmania, the reality was that a youngster would go into an internet café and open a web browser for the aims of either checking

Furthermore, these sites facilitated for the youngsters to easily mobilize one another. A noteworthy event was the preparation and mobilization activities initiated by the Face book users of which they asked every Somalilander of Facebook user to put the country’s flag in their profiles resulting the page turns into green and red and bringing the attention not only the Somalilanders but also the wider global community to wonder what was going on; then making possible to hold the biggest and most well-organized national 18 May event ever.

Another important plus-point for the youth is that these social networking sites became an inexpensive channel they can raise charity funds aimed helping for the needy and the poor people. Notably, the members of Facebook group by the name of Somaliland First succeeded to collect money through the page and feed for the poor people in the State House during Ramadan who couldn’t afford to break their fast.

ive years ago, the use of social networking sites like the Facebook and Twitter were uncommon among the youth of Somaliland. Now, it is rare to see a young man who is sitting an internet café whom the interface of the computer he or she is using shows up other than the blue color of the Face book page. One student from Hargeisa University believes that it’s becoming a taboo for someone especially a youngster not to have a Face book account. He argues that a non-Face book user is an outdated, non-social and old-fashioned type of individual who is completely blind of the modern world. In a nutshell, the above statements are clear testament on how the use of social networking sites is almost a necessity among this young generation in Somaliland.

has provided the youngsters a platform to discuss and analyze the daily hot issues that happen in the country in a free and a critical way. Prior that,, the youth didn’t analyze the daily hot issues that happen in the country in a free and a critical way. Prior that,, the youth didn’t that,, the youth didn’t have a space like this of which they are able to reflect and give their opinions on the things that occur in and around their vicinities that affects their lives. Thanks to the recent Arab revolution which inspired the youth and showed them that they are a great power to reckon with when there is a need of social changes by just posting a small effectual statements on a these social networking pages.

an email —If he or she is good at e-communication; or visit a news website—If he or she is among the few who love to be updated on events in and around his or her locality; or peek on the daily sports— If he is the type of youngsters who are addicted to sports). All these net activities would consume less than an hour of the user’s time. However, the situation is entirely different now. You will meet someone (mostly youngsters) spending hours navigating through the social networking sites. However, coming to the gist of the article, the question is what kind of opportunity and space the youth received from these new medium of communication? Firstly, the emergence of social networking sites particularly the Facebook has provided a free-offcharge communication medium where by youngsters can easily be able to connect to friends and families when ever and where ever they are in the world as long as they have a computer and acquire its basic know-how skill. And as a result of that, the social networking connected many youngsters with the same needs who are scattered around the world.

NATIONAL YOUTH POLICY: A CRITICAL LOOK

W W W . D E S I G N F R E E B I E S . O R G

whole exercise. This unjustifiably long delay on the part of the Somaliland authority, a key partner in youth development, is, on one hand, a clear manifestation of the absence of political will and the lack of ownership among youth leaders on the other.

By Hamse A. Khaire

F R E E B I E S :

V I S I T

Back in 2006 a process of developing a national youth policy for 4 years (2008-2011) was undertaken by youth organizations together with the then ministry of Youth and Sport, ICYP and UNICEF. The chief aim of having a national youth policy was to ensure a more coordinated approach to meeting the needs and aspirations of young people.

G R A P H I C

D E S I G N

As mentioned in the introduction of that NYP document, the policy is said to be “a declaration of commitments that Somaliland gives it is young population”. It is this commitment and the prospects for its fulfillment which this article will look critically.

F O R

M O R E

As per the plan, it was supposed that the formulation, approval, implementation and evaluation of the policy to take place within 4 years starting from 2008 until 2011. The formulation process was roughly on time, quite rigorous and consultative in nature. It is the second phase, the approval process, which was problematic, delayed and which took 5 year to be done (it was approved just 2 months ago)- a year later than the planned completion time of the 6

6

Political will and ownership are key ingredients that are missing and could explain part of the story. With cautious reading of the document, one can find out that the lack of ownership, for instance, is obvious and detectable. In the background of the policy, the following statement is made: “The National Youth Policy (NYP) 2010-2015 is part of a global trend of formulating youth policies that addressed the changing conditions of young population in the 21st century. As countries worldwide engage in a process of developing/ renewing youth policy, the National Youth Policy 2010-2015 seeks to contribute both to the particular needs and circumstances of Somaliland’s youth, and the global youth community” From this statement (see the underlined part), it seems that this policy is made because it is FASHIONABLE to do so. Even though the second part of the statement mentions contribution to Somaliland youth needs, however, time tells us otherwise. What worries us a lot is not the delay in approval but rather the value-added by approving it now. In other words, what is the point of approving a policy supposed to be implemented and completed five years ago. Again this shows the

absence of faith in youth matters by concerned stakeholders and the need to challenge this tradition of empty promises and lip services. The Way Forward Once it is approved now, even though it seems irrelevant, I’d rather alert SONYO, as the legitimate body that represent youth, not torush implementing it unless a revision and updating is done. I say this because implementing an expired policy will have serious consequences for the future work of SONYO itself and youth in general. The need for updating, revision and changes are supported by recent development in the country. First, it has recently been launched “ Somaliland Vision 2030” - a blueprint for Somaliland’s development agenda for the next three decades and an interim fiveyear national development plan (NDP)- which necessities the need for NYP to be aligned to the overall national vision. Secondly, SONYO’s marvelous “Youth Situation Survey”, the first of its kind, in which 800 youth all over the country participated could serve as a source of adjustment. Thirdly and finally, it is now a fact of life that the only thing constant is “change” and youth we’ll not afford to undertake the risk of assuming a static environment and policy set accordingly. This means that prioritization shouldnot be assumed to remain the same but that reordering them and weighting them against the trend in the social, economic and political environment is a necessity.

Regardless of warnings and bad experiences with the smugglers and shark infested waters, many young people still believe in the chance of a better life somewhere out there - far from the Somali dust, the unemployment and hopelessness.

For the first time in Somali history, a youth festival was held in August 2011 tokick-off the Turning the Tide project. Later this year, there will be more similar events. Meanwhile, around 1,000 young people are offered trainings to improve their job opportunities and generally create more awareness about living conditions and possibilities in Somaliland. For some participants, it is a longawaited alternative to the perilous journeys through the Sahara or over the Gulf of Aden.

F R E E B I E S :

Dangerous dreams Hargeisais not far from the coast, but a myriad of obstacles and a perilous journey are ahead for

Passengers thrown overboard Far from everyone survive the journey over the Gulf of Aden. Passengers risk being thrown overboard by the smugglers, if the authorities show up or there are any problems with the boat. It happens regularly, not least with the ramshackle ships often being filled to the point of bursting.

At the time, the Danish Refugee Council’s idea to work with young people in Somaliland was new. Today, the project is realityand aims to encourage young men and women in Somaliland to abandon the idea of migration.

D E S I G N

Women’s scarves and some brightly colored clothes, a few green bushes and trees, along with countlessblue and white stray plastic bags, are the only color.

26-year-old Ahmed Omar Ilyaas knows what he’s talking about. In 2008, he set out on one of these trips, which cost many lives each year. A boat smuggled him and a larger group to Yemen. The trip was tough he recounts, and proves to be an experience that is difficult for him to talk about. The journey entails a story of harsh treatment and struggles without food or water for several days. It is for good reasonsthat this route is notorious and feared. Those who survive it bear witness to the ordeals and tell of true nightmares.

Turning the Tide Now, Ilyaas Ahmed Omar is trying to move into new directions. He is currentlyattendingtraining with one of the local NGOs in Hargeisaand hopes to improvehis employment opportunities in Somaliland. The training ispart of a series of initiatives launched through the Turning the Tideprogramme. The project has been created based on public fundraising in Denmark where, in January 2011, money was collected in a national campaign in support of youths in Africa.

G R A P H I C

It is midday in the Somali capital, Hargeisa, in northern Somalia. A dry wind blows through the city, making people move around with their heads lowered, hiding behind scarfs and clothes to protect them from the mix of sand and air. The land is arid and barren. Greyishbrown is the color of the city and the landscape - the potholed roads, cars, houses, cows and goats– with alayer cementingall surfaces, including the homes scattered in the outskirts of Hargeisa. There, dusty shelter are made of everything from vintage clothing to tarpaulin and pieces of wood and tin – like the homes of many poor peoplein this part of the world.

-It doesn’t matter what others may say about the dangers of venturing out to sea to get across to Yemen and beyond. Most people here are only dreaming about finding work and ways of surviving, because life is difficult here, says Ahme Omar Ilyaas.

At times, smiles seem rarer here in Somaliland. Even thoughrelative peace prevails in Somalilandhaving escaped two decades of devastating civil war in South Central Somalia -and also largely the famine, threatening lives and having forced hundreds of thousands to flee.

Peace prevailing Somaliland, but for many young people this peace is hard to appreciate. Unemployment and lack of opportunities thrive and encourage dreams of better lives on the other side of the Gulf of Aden. In support of Somaliland’s youth the Danish Refugee Council has launched ‘Turning the Tide’ – a project offering vocational training and small grants as a means to stem increased migration.

Learn a craft and get a loan In a house located on the outskirts of Hargeisa, education begins every morning in newly decorated classrooms and workshops. In some rooms students are taught to use sewing machines, other places young women are engaged in hairdressing and traditional beautification using henna for paintingmeticulous floral patterns. There is a need forsuch skills andfor some this course may be what it takes to finally open the door to jobs or business opportunities.

V I S I T

In a third room, hammering and hard work is part of the training to become an electrician. There is usually electricity in Hargeisa, but it is unstable and often difficult to get it to work. When it comes to both construction work and repair, electricians are in high demand. The group of young men knows this and seems to work even harder to learn the new skills. For most of them, this type of workisnew, but for all of them, it represents a dream of being able to support themselvesfinancially and to shape their own future.

F R E E B I E S :

When the trainings are over, the participants will be able to apply for a loan. They need to prepare a business plan and explain how they intend to use a financial grant to start up a small business based on their new skills. If only a few succeed, it may mean more jobs and better living conditions for others in Hargeisa.

Empowering youth 18-year-old HoodaAbdulahi has family members in Canada and Norwaywho went to Yemen and made their way from there. She herselfconsidered giving up on Somaliland and leaving the country. This plan has been put on hold for a while since she learned about the youth project and the offer of vocational training. To her, it was the tailoring classes that were the most appealing. She wanted to be among those learning how to usea sewing machine.

F O R

HoodaAbdulahiapplied for the project and she was admitted soon after. Now, she is engaged in the workshop during the week as her mother agreed to reduce her housework at home. Her mother is a widow with many mouths to feed. HoodaAbdulahi has 11 siblings. - It’s not that I do not want to help my mother at home, says HoodaAbdulahi, - but until now working at home has been my only option.

Growing up as the family’s maid has long been a hurdle for herto participate in activities outside the house. For years, commitments at home have kept her from learning new things and even meeting other people, getting an education and maybe even being lucky enough to get a job. HoodaAbdulahi has learned about the dangers of human trafficking and the risks related to engaging in journeys to Yemen or North Africa from television. Previously, it was a taboo and something rarely spoken of inHargeisa, but now campaigns informcommunities about the risks of migrating. The stories are told by people returning with gruesome stories about their ordeals andthose who did not make it through the desert or across the sea. Even with the short term training through the Turning the Tide project,HoodaAbdulahihas gained courage for the future. She hopes to find work soon, and even continue to work when she gets married. The women who are lucky enough to find jobs in Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa are in general not constrained by norms or traditions restrictingfemales from employment. Instead, the women’s struggle is related to gaining a foothold in the job market. Unemployment No accurate facts exist onthe scale of unemployment in Somaliland, but estimates rateseven out of 10 people as jobless. Prospects of unemployment and virtually no options form the reality and basisof everyday life for the majority of people in Somaliland. Further south, the situation is even worse. In South Central Somalia, ongoing conflict and the recent drought have affected millions of people. People have fled seeking refuge elsewhere in the region. In Hargeisa, drought is not felt as much as it is elsewhere in the Horn of Africa. Still, despite the relative peace and accessibility in northern parts of Somalia, many young people are trapped waiting for development and progress.

Most families in Somaliland have members who have traveled to Yemen or through the Sahara to the north, drawn by the dream of a better life far from the Horn of Africa. The dream is one of finding a place where labor is needed or where there could be a chance to move onwards, maybe even to Europe, USA or Canada.

COMPLETING THE CHALLENGES THROUGH AN ‘INTEGRATED APPROACH’: By Nasir Osman Sh. Hassan Youth are an integral part of society in any dimension. Youth power in terms of development lies within the youth aged between 20 and 35 years. However, in many postconflict societies, the power of the youth is always undermined when it comes to the social development and political participation. Generally, cultural practice holdsa back the mental and physical capacity of youth. This is one reason why youth are considered dormant within Somali society. In the Somaliland context, young people always try to have a role in bringing about a tangible change in the society. They try first to remove barriers that bock their

rehabilitation and reintegration, resettlement, health care, educational, leisure, employment and participation needs. In the process of removing such barriers, youth have made great progress in the education sector by building their capacity of knowledge. Meanwhile, youth have taken one more step forward in removing barriers in the political decision making participation. Non-violently, they removed one legally binding barrier to the participation of youth in politics: Law No. 14 for the Local Councils Election. In this way, the Somaliland youth seem that they are only valuing their role in political participation. However, they also need to implement an integrated approach, which recognizes that, the resource that young people are, which in a supportive environment can provide a platform for young people to cope with multiple challenges that they face and to make a contribution to society. In doing an integrated approach, however, youth should come up with good strategy. This integrated approach will help youth to have one vision of solving the challenging matters to them mainly the unemployment and the roaming out of the country with uncertainty.

UNLEASHING SOMALILAND YOUTH POTENTIAL

By:Abdiladiif

Osman

Abby

With the passing of Law No. 20 limiting Age of political participation in Somaliland, the country has witnessed a major breakthrough. If one thing came out of this development, it would be that a youth-led campaign made such a change in a country where there is a culture that strongly discourages participation of the youth in decision-making and. While the young citizens of the Arab World are turning out in the streets, demanding their birthrights, overthrowing dictators, one after another, it took Somaliland youth, with the help of a political will and maturity, just days of dedication and hardwork to get a law long overdue passed, that could bring a change in Somaliland. This was, without doubt, a significant breakthrough, a true success story, a small part of our potential and talent unleashed that caught the attention of so many, young and old, and got the respect and approval of the country’s policymakers and legislators. Without the political will of the latter, however, and the dedication of our youth, nothing could have been achieved. If one success came out of this, it is that our youth have finally challenged the status quo. This is a starting point, and the means to a noble end. Starting from now, we can change a whole social architecture and lay the foundations for a prosperous, developed society free of all the problems it has today. Now is the time that Somaliland youth get their voice fully and without hesitation. It’s never too late. Yes, too many could

be done, but it’s never too late. We must move to the future united, and with greater insight and dedicated focus to make a difference in our society, to better the standards of living to give our citizens a privileged lives they deserve. Our youth should unite by fighting the ill-fated problems within our society by coming together and setting up ventures and creative solutions that can bridge division within our society, delay any possible, latent signs of divisions and conflict within our society, improve our economy, and hence, our lives, etc. One such move could be to organize events and debates that enhance social integration by bringing together youth from different regions and backgrounds and convene their presence and talent in one place, to raise their awareness, and to teach them the noble virtues of being of service and of being from one nation, Somaliland. Today, and more than any other time, we must have the courage to address our problems boldly and with precision, study and understand the challenges we face and their underlying causes, and bring lasting, sustainable solutions to them. We must feel greater responsibility and act on accordingly, because we are the drivers of change today, and tomorrow. It is time we should brace ourselves for a bigger duty, to shape our future and that of our children and lead this country to a better tomorrow. As someone once said, future belongs to those who prepare for it. So far, Somaliland youth have showed responsibility and the capacity to serve with the smooth handling of successive elections in the country that gave them a reputation and a change of mind by those who were cynical of their competence and talent. However, a greater effort must be made to ensure a maturity and a lust for serving the nation. Our youth should have the responsibility and courage of addressing our society’s problems. Problems that affect and have a daily impact on our lives like, unemployment, extreme polarization of different segments of our society, clanism, human traficking,

etc. In the case of unemployment, an exceptional work must be done to make sure that it is the number one problem that needs a quick- fix. Equally important is addressing the problem of unfair employment based on clan favouritism, personal acquaintances, interests, age, sex, etc, with so many creativity and talent lost because of it. One last message to our youth, serve your country instead of waiting your country to serve you. Do what you can to make a difference. Try to find solutions that can impact the whole society you live in. Try to create a job instead of thinking about taking a job. Try to come up with creative, unique ideas instead of living with the past ones created by people like you. Fight clanism and sectarian divisions within the society. By elevating your conscience and level of thinking, you can rise to a new life and build a foundation for success. Have a cosmopolitan outlook in life, bridge any divisions, heal the wounds and the future is yours; a future full of sacrifice, action, a life of purpose, altruism, love and prosperity. May you have a bright future. My heartfelt congratulations to Somaliland National Youth Organization ( SONYO) for the tireless work and efforts in the improvement of Somaliland youth. If it weren’t for their sheer engagement and effort, nothing could be achieved. It is my fervent hopes that you serve our youth to the best of your abilities. E-mail: latifabbey@yahoo.com

WHERE IS YOUR HEAD AT? and cheaper availability of IT resources have revolutionized the way youth across the world make sense of their world. Instead of the strong proclivity to remain passive, which has persisted among the world’s youth since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the ongoing IT revolution gave way to active participation on their part. The “Wi-Fi” generation has a greater notion to make a difference as the emergence and widespread availability of wireless technology brings them closer – thereby rendering their concerted effort ever more imposing.

By Mustafa A. Awad Although it was certainly one pathetic way to go, I can’t say I sympathize with Gaddafi for getting toppled like that. For decades, Gaddafi and likeminded Arab leaders of his era – i.e. Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak and Ben Ali of Tunisia – ruled their respective nations with an iron fist which they used to cringe all sort of opposition. It’s been dubbed the “Arab Spring” as the “come-out-to-depose-tyranny” campaign spread across the Arab world like wildfire. Yet, the youth riots that ensued and swept across the UK as well as the ongoing “Occupy Wall Street” in the US demonstrate that angst and despair are clearly not experiences unique to Arab youth. That tyranny comes in all shapes and sizes – for some, it comes in the form of imprisonment and murder for dissent; for others, it means an unlevelled playing field amongst the classes, which, for a society like America that prides itself as classless, is terribly ironical. Nevertheless, this shows exactly how collective discontent has increasingly come to symbolize the parlance of our times. Youth have generally been crucial to any social transformation that has occurred at the global scale since time immemorial. But, after having remained startlingly quiet for the past two decades, the world’s youth population is once again asserting itself as a powerful and dynamic change agent. As a force-to-be-reckoned-with, they are establishing, at once, “the powers that be” will not continue to be without a reexamination of the prevailing status quo. And, despite all the challenges, it is happening. Now!For years, tension remained pent up and synergy misplaced. But, the inadvertent convergence of social media and the wider

But, oh the youth of Somaliland, where’s your clout?! With the availability of means that make it much easier and cheaper for you to try and have your two-cents heard, why the prolonged silence? Everything in Africa, Somaliland in particular, begins and ends with politics. And, so, before the politick engines start revving, let it be made clear that this isn’t a campaign to provoke a revolt against President Silanyo—he certainly is no Gaddafi, nor frankly his predecessor Rayale for that matter. However, this is more accurately an attempt to get a better handle on where your cause lies – if at all, there’s a cause. There is something extremely unsettling about the great divergence which you seem to be undergoing at the moment. On the one hand, you are the first generation of youth in this country to have such remarkably unprecedented accessibility to resources for peaceful societal transformation. Yet, while IT has certainly sped up your exchange of information and social networking through email and Facebook, little connectedness is evident amongst you. Equally astounding is the fact this has meant little for the sheer dormancy that has predominantly characterized you as a social group since the advent of peace and stability in this country. The generation before you brought to its knees the second most powerful military state in Africa of its time. The generation before that spearheaded the ousting of the British, freeing Somaliland from colonial rule. Even though there is no tyrannical dictator to depose of or foreign intruders to oust, there is still so much to be concerned about for you—so much at stake! From widespread unemployment and poverty to illegal migration, you have shown little initiative in taking up a cause. Information technology has given the youth across this increasingly smaller globe a voice and the means to stimulate change. It seems that your time has come!

OUR CONTEMPORARY LIFESTYLE: MEDICALLY NOT-RECOMMENDED Abdirahman Ali A. Jiciir, Medical Student, UoH

The Somali lifestyle is dramatically changing! During the last three decades and for the better, there has been change of life in all aspects. But this change is adversely affecting the wellbeing of the community in health-wise. Therefore, living like the way most of our people currently do can be regarded as a disparity ton how people are supposed to behave in order stay healthier. For quite some time, most Somalis were having pastoral as well as nomadic way of living. Getting up early to rear his domestic livestock so as to milk, eat and vend; or cultivate his land so as to produce food were among the main day-to-day activities of the common Somali man. Women did not use to sit back and be idle. On the contrary, as they were having the adroitness to craft all the elements of their traditional housing, they were doing their tasks of milking, home arrangements and embroidery. Moreover, they used to walk miles and miles in search of water and pasture while facing endless obstacles from the harsh semi-arid environment in the Horn of Africa which they inhabit included low rainfall, wind erosion, recurrent droughts, and sometimes became victims of sweeping floods. Having dealt with all these tyrant circumstances mentioned, above yet they didn’t suffer from these medical conditions that highly affected our society in recent years. Many times you may hear that your friend or family member was diagnosed from hypertension, diabetes or heart disease; May be stroke and many other similar conditions had caused one of your lovely one’s life to short. To have a better understanding of the underlying causes of what is generating household horror stories, one must ask himself: What

is causing this? Why such diseases are becoming a common with in the society? Is there any correlation of those diseases and how we live? Keeping in mind that effective research is the trade mark of medical profession, when confronted with great responsibility of understanding and treating human beings, we need as much scientific evidences as possible tin order o render a validity, credible and justifiable decision making . But due to unavailable medical data in our country, this article will mainly focus on the modifiable risk factors that are associated with these diseases which recently become more pronounced and widely felt. The risk behavior are as follows: 1.Sedatary lifestyle, most of our time we take sitting, early in the morning we go to our workplace by cars and we come back with these cars. In the afternoon we are sitting for chewing Kat or friend meeting in a cafeteria or studdng in class. This increases the like hood of certain disease because body is designed to get physical activity. Making time for physical activity is a vital link to enhancing our chances of staying healthy. Setting exercise program will help prevent most of the chronic diseases as many studies have depicted. A good exercise program will strengthen the heart muscle and help to reduce the resting heart rate and lower blood pressure and blood fats, while raising HDL cholesterol, thus lessening arteriosclerosis risk. Therefore regular exercise is part of healthy lifestyle. 2. High cholesterol diet is one of the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat like substance that the body needs to function normally, present in cell walls or membranes of the body everywhere. The body uses cholesterol to produce hormones, vitamin D and bile acids to help the digestion of fat. It small amount of cholesterol is needed to meet these needs. The extra is deposited in arteries, including the coronary arteries of heart, carotid arteries of the brain, they cause narrowing and latter blockage of arteries. In our society, for having good feasting and inviting friends for special occasions

it turns to be unsatisfactory if not fatty camel hump, lamb and mutton is served. And we can guess the consequences. 3. Poor nutrition. Eating healthy is part of healthy lifestyle. I don’t mean to eat what we mostly cannot afford or unavailable in our country, certainly we have but don’t see them important like beans, vegetables, milk or natural food in concise way. A healthy diet involves consuming appropriate amounts of all essential nutrients and an adequate amount of water. Nutrients can be obtained from many different foods, so there are numerous diets that may be considered healthy. Literally, healthy diet needs to have a balance of macronutrients (fats, proteins, and carbohydrates), calories to support energy needs, and micronutrients to meet the needs for human nutrition without inducing toxicity or excessive weight gain from consuming excessive amounts. We need a balanced diet instead of consuming excessive carbohydrates, like pasta, in all our routine diet. This is why a great majority of our people gain a weight in asymmetrical way which is mainly distributed in the central abdomen or buttocks. 4. Smoking, is major cause’s lung cancer, chronic pulmonary lung disease and heart disease, and cause more death worldwide, it is estimated 30 percent of cancers are either directly or indirectly related to smoking. All tobacco products are included in this risk factor, not only cigarette. There are 4000 chemicals in cigarette; hundreds are toxic. Nicotinine reaches the brain, carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin preventing from carrying full oxygen, also cancer causing agents (carcinogens) cause mutation of genes. The number of smokers in the Somali communities is on the rise and many of them are paying the price. Finally, it’s important to develop a low risk lifestyle that is free from smoking, a body mass index of less than 25, exercise duration of 30min/day. high intake of vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, whole grains and fish. Exercises, which almost unknown to our society, also should be part of our daily life.

responsibility of getting a fund for this project. As you can understand from the name of this project, the overall objective of the project is to divert the youth from doing evil actions, radicalism and inter-youth conflict through advocacy, entrepreneurship skills and skill trainings. The advocacy program is airing for three activities interdependent with each other (sports, culture and conflict management education) by expecting to train 1000 youth as direct beneficiaries’ and more than 10,000 indirect beneficiaries.

By: Ismail Omer Ibrahim SONYO Research & Capacity Building Officer During the preceding ten years, the youth of Somaliland architected illicit journey towards Europe with intend to acquire residential and job opportunities, because of the low job opportunity available in the country. This illicit migration fascinated many youngsters in Somaliland to put effort how they will cross in many hazardous borders and seas. Many of them die in the way to Libya, others were raped and tortured, and many of them die in the Mediterranean Sea, while the rest were detained in work detention. SONYO Umbrella has become aggravated from these painful events. BARAHA WADA-XIDHIIDHKA BULSHADA IYO SAAMAYNTOODA Qalinka: Cadnaan Cabdi Xasan, Isu-duwaha SONYO Shan sanno ka hor isticmaalka baraha internetka ee bulshadu ku wada xidhiidho ee ee afka qalaad loo yaqaan (Social Networking Media) ee ay ka mid yihiin Facebook iyo Twitter waxa la odhan karaa maba jirin, maantana way adag tahay in aad aragto qof dhallinyaro ah oo internetka adeegsada oo aan lahayn barta caanka ah ee midabkeedu buluugga yahay ee loo yaqaan Facebook. Arday dhigta jaamacadda Hargeysa oo aanu arrintan ka sheekaysanay wuxu ku dooday in aanay suurogal ahayn qof dhallinyar ah oo aan lahayn Facebook, haddii uu jirona uu yahay qof aan daddhex-gal lahayn ama uu yahay qof da’ weyn oo ka dhacsan tiknoolajiga casriga ee dunidu ku wada xidhiidho. Haddase waxay ku qaataan saacado badan barahan isku-xidhka bulshada ee soo kordhay awgeed. Taasi waxay inoo muujinaysaa muhiimada ay leeyihiin barahan casriga ahi iyo in aynu u fiirsano saamaynta ay gaar ahaan ku leedahay da’yarta iyo faca soo koraya.

Waxanan odhan karaa abaabulkan Faceboo-gu qayb laxaad leh ayuu ka qaatay xuskii quruxda badnaa ee dhacay 18kii May. Tusaale labaad, waa sidii uu Facebook-gu uga qayb-qaatay furustii qodobkii sharciga ahaa ee dhallinyarada ka hortaagnaa in ay isku soo taagi karaan golaha deegaankaa. Tusaalaha sadeexaad, oo ah kan ugu mudanina, waa kacdoonkan waddamada Carabta taariikhda cusub u horseeday, kaas oo la aqoonsan yahay saamynta aan la dafikiri Karin ee Facebook, Twitter iyo baraha kale ku lahaayeen. Tusaaleyaashani waxay ku tusayaan muhiimadda iyo macnaha baraha casriga ahi leeyihiin. Horaa loo yidhi nimco weliba nusqaan leh. Inkastoo oo faa’iidooyinkaas oo dhan ay baraha wada-xidhiidhka bulshadu leeyihiin haddana waa mindi laba af leh dhalliilo badan ayaa loo soo jeediyaa. Arrimaha lagaga cawdo waxa ka mid ah wakhti lumis badan, shaqada oo lagaga mashquulo, arrimo aan anshax ahaan wacnayn oo mararka qaar la isku waydaarsado iyo iyadoo ay da’yartu u qabatimayaan sidii balwadaha. Ugu dambayn, waxa wacan in ay da’yartu ka faa’iideystaan fursadaha ay barahani fureen isla markaana ka taxadiraan in ay si qaldan oo horumarkooda lid ku noqon karta u isticmaalaan.

Haddii aan saamaynta togan ku horreeyo, waxay barahani uu Facebook-gu ugu horeeyo fududeeyaan wada xidhiidhkii iyo waxisweydaarsashadii da’yarta, waxana dib isku helay dad badan oo asxaab iyo ehel ahaa oo kala baadsanaa. Sidoo kale waxay da’yarta u fududeeyeen in ay ku abaabulaan hawlaha ay qabanayaan. Tusaale aan u soo qaadano u diyaargarow-gii 20-guuradii Somaliland ee 18 May. Kumanaan farriimo ah oo isbaraarujin muhiimadda maalintan ku saabsan ayaa la isku waydaarsaday Facebook-ga, sidoo kale calankii Somaliland ayaa lagu wada xardhay qaybta sawirka qofka iyo taariikdhiisa loogu talo galay. Madashan ayaa hal mar isku badashay madal farxad iyo erayo dhaxal gal ah la isku waydaarsaday kuwaas oo wali ka sii dhex guuxaya dhagahayga, Aniga oo u dhawaanaya kalmadihii goobtaas la is dhaafsaday ayaa waxa ka mida ahaa: Agaasimaha Fulinta Dallada Dhallinyarada ee SONYO Mud. Siciid Maxamed Axmed oo halkaasi ka hadlay ayaa waxa uu tibaaxay in SONYO ay tahay dallad aad u balaadhan oo matasha dhalinta Somaliland waxana uu xusay inay soo dhawaynayaan hawlaha ay Hayada ASARDA hayso. Godoomiyaha hay’adda ASARDA Prof. Xasan Cali Cismaan oo isaguna ka hadlay madashan ayaa waxa

uu xusay in lacagtan ay qiime wayn ugu fadhido ASARDA, waxa kale oo uu xusay in ay aad ugu faraxsan yihiin hawlaha ay dallada SONYO u hayso umada isla markaana ay aaminsan yihiin ASARDA ahaan in ay dhallinyartu yihiin xoogii umadda. Prof. Xasan waxa uu ka codsaday dhamaan dhallinta Somaliland inay mid $1 ugu deeqaan ASARDA isla markaana ay fariimahaas wakiil uga noqoto dallada SONYO lana gaarsiiyo dhamaan dhalinta Somaliland. Isla goobtan ayay saraakiisha SONYO mid hal doolar ugu deeqeen hayada ASARDA waxana ay ku direen ZAAD account, iyaga oo ugu baaqay dhamaan dhallinta Somaliland inay mid hal doolar ugu deeqaan hayada iyaga oo ku soo diraya ZAAD # 400059. Dhiiri-gelintan ku dhisan dareenka farxada leh ayaa ah mid jid-bixinaysa kaalinta buuran ee ay dallada SONYO kaga jirto wax ka qabashada baahida Dhalinyarta iyo Qaranka Somaliland hadba intii taagteeda ah.
