X3 evening service Wiltshire Council is proposing to withdraw funding from the X3 bus service from September 2013, which will result in a reduced timetable.

It means that evening journeys after about 8pm will be cut on the X3 between Bournemouth, Ringwood and Salisbury on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

he National Health helpline 111 is getting a lot of bad press right now and I’m not surprised. I had the misfortune to need to use it a few weeks ago and made the first call sometime between 11pm and midnight. I gave the details of the problem and was told a doctor would ring back with two hours, which I felt was a long time. A doctor did ring at about 2am, by which time the patient was in a deep sleep and seemed settled. Stupidly I let the doctor ring off not realising the call had woken the patient and the situation had worsened. I called 111 straight back, expecting them to put me through to the doctor, but they said it would be another two hours before a medic could attend. At about 4am a medic arrived and gave antibiotics and painkillers, but explained he wasn’t a doctor and advised me to call the patient’s GP at 9am and request a home visit. After a GP home visit, the patient had to go to hospital and I was told it would be (you’ve guessed) 2 hours before the ambulance would arrive. In fact it took 4 hours and the paramedics said they were run ragged and the whole system is falling apart because people are now dialling 999 when they’ve got a bad cold or a cough. After my 111 experience, I can believe this. After all, how many anxious relatives can normally wait 2 hours between needing help for a loved one and getting a phone call from a doctor?

Top honours for Hampshire rider

What a racquet!

King George V Playing Fields’ tennis courts are the home of Ferndown Tennis Club. The club recently hosted the Dorset Schools year 3 and year 4 competition (aged 7-9 years). Using scaled-down courts, the youngsters competed throughout the day.

Kate Ingram from Godshill in the New Forest outperformed riders from all corners of the UK to win the British Riding Clubs Senior Novice Showjumping Championship at Royal Windsor Horse Show recently.

The BRC Championships at Royal Windsor Horse Show give grass-roots riders a unique opportunity to compete in dressage competitions and top score showjumping in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. All competitors are members of the British Riding Clubs movement and earned their places in the finals at area riding club qualifiers held across the UK. Representing New Forest Pony Enthusiasts, Kate’s class was hotly contested so it was a real achievement for her to finish on top with her New Forest pony, Silverlea Salsa. The gelding is a real star for the Ingram family, having competed in the show’s inter-hunt relay with Kate’s husband

Coffee Perks Up Fundraising A coffee morning and table sale event held recenty at the home of volunteer instructor Vicky Gunn raised the sum of £743 for the Riding for Disabled Children’s group based at Green Cottage Riding School. A further fundraiser will be a Family Dog Show at Homelands Farm, Three Legged Cross on Saturday 22 June. Everyone is welcome on the day.

The Barrington Centre in Ferndown held a right royal event to select their Strawberry Prince and Princess from Parley First School for the upcoming Strawberry Fayre.

The winning pupils, who penned poems with a strawberry theme, are Dylan Giles and Alisha Bridger and they will be crowned by the Mayor of Ferndown at the fayre on 22 June.

Bongo delight Wimborne First School was visited by Albert Noah-Messom (Noah), an ambassador of African culture, who brought a real taste of Africa to the ears and hearts of the audience.

Noah taught the children about traditional African drumming, and the pupils joined in with the music and really had some fun.

Chips reunited When Theresa Hunt from Alderholt found a stray cat in Ringwood Forest and took him in to be scanned by her Alderholt vet, he turned out to be Garfield, belonging to another client of the same surgery.

Nothing unusual about that, except Garfield had been missing since the previous October. His owner, Angela Morrall, was delighted to see him, and he showed no ill effects from his adventures.

Buckingham Palace visit Roger and Pamela Long from West Moors have been to London to visit the Queen.

The invitation to the garden party at Buckingham Palace on 30 May, was in recognition of the many hours of voluntary work carried out by the couple for the benefit of West Moors, especially as chairman and publicity officer of the Home Watch group - recently chosen as the best Watch in Dorset.

Roger said, ‘’We had a wonderful day at the Palace. Despite the wet weather, Her Majesty circulated amongst the guests dressed in pink and carrying a matching umbrella. These memories will stay with us for the rest of our lives.”

Best teen Optimist at the helm

M

ilo Gill-Taylor, aged 13, from Spinnaker Sailing Club near Ringwood, has won the Optimist World and European selection trials in 2013 for the 2nd year in succession.

Milo had an amazing regatta with one 1st place, seven 2nd places, a 5th and a 6th. By winning the UK event, Milo has qualified for the UK Worlds Team for the third year in succession, an amazing achievement given the high standard of sailing.

The Optimist dinghy is sailed and raced by

complete beginners through to future Olympic Champions. Milo is currently the top British Optimist Junior Sailor. The Optimist is the biggest youth class in the World with an International fleet of over 150,000 registered boats. The UK Optimist World and European selection trials are open to the top 80 Optimist sailors in the UK who compete for five places at the annual World Optimist Championships, to be held this year in August at Lake Garda, Italy.

100th anniversary To celebrate a milestone anniversary, Colehill Methodist Church is hosting a flower festival at the chapel in Lonnen Road on 22 and 23 June. All welcome.

There will also be a series of special centenary events on Sunday afternoons between June and October when former ministers at the church will lead services followed by tea.

They include the Rev’d Pamela le Poidevin, who lived in a second-hand caravan beside the church for eight years during her time at Colehill. Pamela recalls, “It had six berths, but I had to put the bed down every night, and in the winter the Calor gas cylinder outside would freeze.”

Sister Pam, as she was known affectionately, comes back on 23 June from her home in Guernsey for a service at 3pm.

Milo was the youngest ever sailor to qualify for the Optimist Worlds Team. He learnt to sail at five at Spinnaker Sailing Club, and started racing at seven. In pledging support from Spinnaker Club for Milo to attend the 2013 Worlds at Lake Garda, the commodore and committee said Milo’s determined attitude, natural ability and above all love of sailing combine to make him a truly world-class sailor and wish him the best of luck at the 2013 Optimist World Championships.

Catch the buzz Mid Dorset and North Poole MP Annette Brooke praised local residents’ work to save the scabious bee – the area’s ‘iconic’ bee.

Bee-lovers have taken over 175 actions to save bees in Mid Dorset and North Poole as part of Friends of the Earth’s Bee Cause campaign.

Actions include planting bee friendly seeds, signing petitions and building ‘bee hotels’ to replace lost natural habitat.

A new University of Reading report identifies parts of the South West as of key importance to the scabious bee and highlights the issue of habitat loss in the decline of bees across the region.

“It’s amazing,” said MP Annette Brooke.

Not only that, the first of the cygnets to arrive was believed to be the 100th hatching at Moors Valley since it opened 25 years ago.

Hello Dear Readers, It’s Alan from the Osborne Centre, writing to you again from our branch at West Parley.

If you’ve read my previous articles, you will know that we have a super centre at West Parley where we are based.

Due to the many changes brought about recently to the welfare system, many members are worried about their financial future. One facility we offer is an in-house Citizens Advice Bureau where those concerned can arrange a private meeting with our resident CAB officer. This works very successfully with many participating members now receiving their full allowances or having their appeals heard and upheld.

Also available to members is our trained counsellor, who has MS. Emotional support may be critical to some disabled people so who better to help with the many emotional challenges these people face daily.

We acknowledge that not all members can, or even want, to use the centre. Newly diagnosed people, many still at work, are busy so cannot spare time during the day.

Others may feel they are not ready to accept the centre environment yet, which is very understandable. For these members we run a group called ‘MateS’ who meet in the evenings at a local social club. Up to 60 members listen to presentations given by neurological professionals, enjoy quizzes, skittles etc, or just meet up for a social evening.

These members are, of course, still able to access all the branch and centre’s amenities should they wish to.

As a branch, we never forget the carers who look after our members. They meet regularly as a group, taking part in various activities such as walks, quizzes, skittles, pub meals etc, which gives them a break from the very responsible role they undertake daily.

Spin a yarn for charity The Big Blanket Campaign is looking for all the help it can get in its work for charity. The campaign is asking people to donate materials or their time to help their work in knitting blankets to be either donated to care homes and other organisations, or to be sold for charity. At Christmas, the best blankets will be sold at the Greyfriars market in Ringwood, and the proceeds will be donated to smaller local charities that do not receive national funding. The campaign is currently looking for charities who fit the criteria and would be interested in receiving funds. Any leftover blankets will be donated as above.

If you wish to donate materials to the campaign or get knitting yourself, you can do so on the Tuesday market at Greyfriars Activity Hall in Ringwood and the Friday market at Verwood Hub, where the blankets will be on display.

The Nightjar heaved on 5 June at the launch of the Voice of Ferndown organised

by Ferndown Chamber of Commerce.

Punchy performances by professional comedian Matt Black, Agagaga and a surprise cameo by Richard from the Stone Lounge kept the entertainment flowing.

But the real stars of the night were the young people who entered the talent competition there and then. Performances were recorded and are being put on YouTube where you can show your support for the acts you like best.

‘I Dreamed a Dream’ by 12-year-old Nicole McNally stunned the audience.

‘The Prayer’ was a brave and beautiful choice by 15-year-old Jenny Osborne.

In complete contrast, Nick Braunton, 23, punked up the show with ‘American Idiot’ and Kelly De Jong, 19, a popular singer at the Barrington Centre followed with ‘I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker’.

There is still time to enter.

The most ‘liked’ acts will go through to the staged events on 14 September and 16 finalists will perform live at the Barrington Centre on 4 October 2013 in front of the judges. They are Matt Black who has also put up the main prize of a recording session at Hangover Hill Studios; professional agent Tara Nix; the Mayor of Ferndown and local businesswoman Sharon Worsfold.

Wimborne boys back from Dutch tour The much acclaimed Wimborne Town u14 boys have returned from a successful tour of Holland. Based in Zandvort near Amsterdam, the Dorset League and Cup Champions took on and beat the best of the local teams, including Amsterdam Football Club AJAX, and the tournament hosts Amstelveen, winning the group stage but losing in the final to AC Devion 1-0.

The following day the team travelled to Odin 59 and ran out 3-2 winners in a hard fought match.

The ACS sponsored Wimborne Town side join the Junior Premier League next season, playing teams such as Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion and other league teams. Players wishing to trial for the Dorset u14s side should email wimbornefc@aol.com

When businesses go bust, how does this affect my rights?

I’ve just found out that a shop I’ve bought goods from has gone bust. How will this affect my consumer rights?

When a trader goes into administration, its rights and responsibilities change.

Depending on your situation you might end up losing out, so it’s important to know what you can do to protect yourself.

A common problem when shops go bust is what you can do if you have a gift card. Once they go into administration, shops are under no obligation to continue to accept gift cards, although some may continue to do so. If you have a gift card then hold on to it, even if it isn’t being accepted, as the situation can change. This works both ways, so if a shop is taking vouchers then make sure you use them while you can.

If you’ve put down a deposit on an item that you have yet to receive, then whether or not you receive it will depend on whether it has been ‘earmarked’ for you. If it has then the shop should fulfil your order, but if not then you may not see the goods. If

you’ve bought something, for example electrical or white goods, which become faulty then it might be easier to claim under the manufacturer’s guarantee.

You can log a complaint with the administrators, which will add you on to the store’s list of creditors, but realistically most customers will be a long way down the list.

If you used a credit or debit card you may be able to make a claim from your provider, and if the goods or services you bought came with a manufacturer’s guarantee or an insurance-backed guarantee, you may be able to make a claim under them. If the trader was a member of a trade association, contact them to see if they can help. Brain Power After six years of competing in children’s distance triathlons, young teenager Lucy Brain made her adult distance triathlon debut on Sunday 5 May.

A pool swim was followed by a 10 mile bike leg and three mile run, with Miss Brain up against 115 starters including some highly experienced and serious triathletes.

She was quickly out of the pool with the second fastest swim of the day and after a good transition was away for her first competitive ride on her new Scott Foil 40 supplied by Pedals Cycle Centre in Ferndown.

The bike ride went exceptionally well and after a good second transition, Lucy performed a great run, covering three miles in an impressive 21 minutes.

Lucy was the 2nd female over the finish line and 15th in the triathlon overall. There were a few bemused male athletes who were amazed they had been beaten by a 13-year-old girl.

The joys of Ringwood library

“A library is thought in cold storage” wrote Lord Samuel, who was involved in Government and Foreign Affairs for over 50 years.

Ringwood Library performs magic.

It stores excerpts from wisdom and entertainment from the past 2000 plus years, but in a warm, friendly and most welcoming place.

Think library, think books.

Yes, but also think music, films on DVD, think rhymes, stories and fun for tots and tinies and also older children’s songs and games.

There’s a Children’s Reading Group, ‘Knit & Knatter,’ a town councillor surgery, and disability advice from the New Forest Disability Service. I have been a beneficiary of their skilled and impartial advice.

You don’t need books to learn, although they help. But all manner of courses are run throughout the year including family finances; budgeting, basic computing and felt picture making as well as adult reading groups.

No allotment site in Horton Road

At a meeting of the St Leo nards and St Ives Parish Council on Wednesday 29 May, cou ncillors voted that the above site would no longer be to considered for allotments.

This is the fourth site the working party has looked at and it was unfortunate that mem bers of the public present had thought that it was propos ed for allotments, when in fact it was only a site to be investig ated.

The working party had nev er considered the Village Gre en status should be remove d, but that it may have been pos sible to use for allotments as a community use. The wor king party has investigated 11 of the 12 possible issues that wer e brought up by local residen ts.

These will also be useful when considering any further site .

Renewed appeal after body found in Christchurch Detectives investigating the suspicious death of Rico Dardis are renewing their appeal for witnesses to come forward.

The body of 30-year-old Rico was discovered near groynes at Seaway Avenue in Christchurch soon after 9pm on Monday, 27 May. A short time later, two Bournemouth men were arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Inspector Marcus Hester, of the Major Crime Investigation team said, “Dorset Police have launched a major investigation to ensure that we establish exactly what happened to Rico and I am renewing our appeal for witnesses and anyone with information about Rico’s death to come forward.

Slimmers in Verwood are dropping lbs and bagging up all the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to raise money in the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw.

Members of the groups in the New Forest area team have spring cleaned their closets and are donating the clothes that no longer fit their new slimline figures to their local Cancer Research UK shop in Ringwood.

The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is a nationwide fund-raising drive that sees Slimming World members across the UK donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, Slimming World’s charity partner for 2013. Each bag of clothes collected could raise up to £25. The New Forest team has donated over 130 bags to date.

New sport and leisure facilities for Verwood – how it all came about In late 2011 East Dorset District Council approved the sale of Verwood Leisure Centre to Wm Morrison Supermarket plc with a view to Morrisons providing a replacement foodstore while the Council would improve sport and leisure facilities in the town.

Contracts were exchanged in October 2012. The agreement has meant that the Verwood Leisure Centre, which was built in the early 1980s and was in need of major refurbishment, is to be demolished allowing Morrisons to comprehensively redevelop the existing store.

The capital receipts from the sale of the Leisure Centre site are contributing towards the Council being able to make major investments in new facilities in Verwood.

The investment project is now being realised with three major developments. The first part of the project has seen a new all-weather sports pitch at Potterne Park which was opened in January 2013.

The astro-turf pitch provides a football and rugby training facility with floodlighting and drainage to enable it to be used all year round. East Dorset District Council acted in a consultancy role for the design and tendering through to the completion of the project.

The council has also managed the second part of the project which is now being completed to provide a state-of-the-art 50-station gym extension at Verwood Hub. Construction started in late 2012 and the gym opened on 8 June.

Known as Lifestyle Active, the new gym includes the latest fitness equipment – much more than was available at the Leisure Centre - and also enables users to surf the web or keep up with social media whilst exercising.

The final part of the project will see a new sports centre at Emmanuel School which will be open from the first week of September and will include four courts, one more than was available at the Leisure Centre. As well as providing a facility for the school, it will be open to the public every evening Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

If you thought you’d missed Verwood Carnival, think again. This year it’s been moved to 29 June. The carnival princesses, Chloe Simpson and Erin Atyeo-Baker will lead the procession.

Walkers should assemble at the recreation ground at 12.45pm. The procession starts at 1pm and will progress down Station Road, through Verwood centre and onwards to the carnival field – the Fuzzy Bit off Crane Drive.

Due to dwindling support and lack of floats in recent years, the procession will be a walking only event.

The carnival will take place as usual, so be prepared to be wowed by the arena events including displays by the Tigers junior motorcycle team and birds of prey from Meredown Falconry.

The funfair will open on the Friday night before the carnival, and run into the early evening on Saturday.

Officially opened by Cllr Lucy Clark, chairman of East Dorset District Council and Cllr Simon Gibson, Verwood’s mayor on 12 May, the skate park extension at Potterne Park turned out to be a memorable public engagement for both dignitaries in their outgoing roles.

‘Cut’ in spectacular style, (see photo), the ribbon ceremony celebrated a new era of skating in Verwood.

A Skatejam drew over a hundred skateboarders and BMX bikers from miles around to compete for prizes and the Vans Team gave freestyle displays.

The annual spring coffee morning held at the home of Anthony and Christine Oliver in aid of Wimborne in Bloom on 18 May raised £409.

Around 80 people attended.

Salisbury Flower Club blooms at Chelsea Members of Salisbury Flower Club romped home from the recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show with several floral design awards. The club was awarded Silver Flora for flower arranging 1st session. In addition, two other club members brought home a silver gilt and a gold. President of the club, Mr Michael Bowyer MBE, was one of the prizewinners.

New mayor, Cllr Andy Hampton, who has chosen to support Wimborne in Bloom in his mayoral year was represented by his daughter Alisha who not only helped throughout the morning but also drew the raffle.

Flowering favourites Ferndown Haskins Garden Centre created a spectacular collection of plants that proved popular at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show’s centenary last month.

The display included three special clematis from the worldrenowned Channel Island based grower Raymond Evison. Plant buyer, Colin Brickell said, “We have selected three varieties: Gisselle, Samaritan Jo, and Chelsea, named to celebrate the show’s centenary.

ylvester the Cat – the Looney Tunes legend – wants a supermini to help him catch Tweety Bird. What should he buy? I suspect this hungry feline, who is broke after spending a fortune on fish, would sell six of his nine lives to raise money for a Dacia Sandero Access 1.2-litre. Why? Because it costs £5,995, making it the cheapest new car in the UK and one of the best value. So, for very little money, Sylvester could have five doors and a 320-litre boot. Although these sound like unremarkable features there are several more expensive superminis that have three doors and far less cargo capacity. Power comes from a 75bhp petrol engine that could propel the black and white cat to 62mph in 14.5 seconds. Not fast, but fast enough to scare Tweety. This entry-level trim also averages 48.7mpg which is reasonable considering the price. After all, it costs less than the serving bowl Sylvester has “reserved” for Tweety.

The car’s pleasing fuel efficiency complements its light steering, smooth manual transmission and excellent visibility that make driving effortless. No wonder Sylvester is salivating with anticipation.

But there is a potential problem. Whereas Sylvester loves the thought of chasing Tweety in a Sandero he is concerned that he has not heard of its manufacturer. This is because Dacia is new to the UK market even though it started life in 1966 in Romania. However, the company is now owned by Renault who see it as their budget brand. The Sandero Access 1.2-litre therefore has a limited equipment specification compared to most new vehicles.

Fixed Penalties Set To Rise

According to the AA, the majority of drivers will welcome increased motoring fixed penalty fines to tackle those who use hand held mobile telephones when driving.

Widespread illegal mobile phone use is often raised as a concern by AA members. The Transport Secretary has indicated that the fine will soon be increased from £60 as it hasn’t changed since 2000.

The use of hand held mobile telephones while driving has been illegal since 2003 when a fixed penalty of £30 was introduced.

Currently the standard motoring fixed penalty fine is £60 plus three penalty points and this has been the level since 2000 – it was extended to mobile phone offences in 2007.

In an AA-Populus poll nearly three quarters of drivers (74%) see others using mobile phones on some or most journeys, with one quarter (25%) seeing it on every journey.

A small majority (58%) say they have never used a hand-held phone in the car but of the 42% that have used a phone 60% say it distracted them from driving, according to the poll of 20,936 drivers. The AA finds this worrying as it implies almost 40% think using a hand-held mobile is not distracting.

Women drivers make up more than 40% of car owners for the first time, according to new government statistics. Last year across the UK, 9.8166 million women were registered with the DVLA as private car keepers, compared to 14.5734 million men. In 1975/76, only 26% of women held a full driving licence, but in 2011, of the 35 million holders of full driving licences, 16 million were women.

ver the May Bank Holiday Weekend, Beaulieu’s brand new family fun event, Truckmania, roared into life in the attraction’s parkland with hordes of lorries and trucks arriving to bask in both the glorious sunshine and admiring glances of the 7,000 visitors attending.

Around 150 trucks of every size and age were on display, from vintage and veteran commercial vehicles to brand new, modern eco-lorries, plus some very colourful customised creations.

Companies attending the event included Dalton’s, with some eye-catching film-branded lorries, Monster truck, BIGFOOT wowed the crowds, demonstrating its sheer size and power in the Beaulieu Arena each morning, culminating in a spectacular car crushing display which left Silverlake Garage’s specially provided vehicles squashed into the ground like flattened tin cans.

A. If you originally chose your agent because they quoted the lowest fees, or produced the highest valuation, then it may well be that they have not been doing a good enough job, and a change maybe in order. However, if you are going to do that, then I strongly urge you to opt for another sole agency agreement.

The argument in favour of multiple agency, of course – and the reason why some people are prepared to pay higher fees for it – is that with several agents working on your behalf, your home will reach a greater number of potential buyers. In reality, however, this doesn’t stack up – particularly these days, when the majority of people start their house-hunting online. In fact, when you think about it, the only real difference with multi is that your property keeps cropping up time after time. And, human nature being what it is, that’s not actually a good thing.

Nevertheless, the real problem with multiple agency is its winner-takes-all ethos. Yes, a participating agent might succeed in securing the sale and earning the commission. But they might equally well find themselves pipped at the post and wind up with nothing at all to show for their efforts.

That’s hardly much of an incentive.

So, sole agency is almost always the better bet, because 1) it’s better to have a single, highly motivated agent on your case than half a dozen who are just going through the motions, and 2) because it’s cheaper. (Better still, choose an agent belonging to Team, and get the best of both worlds – several agents across the area, all equally incentivised to work hard on your behalf, for the price of just one).

However, this may all be academic, because if you originally chose your existing agent on the strength of their professional reputation and their track record in successfully selling similar properties in your area, and if they can demonstrate that they have done everything possible to sell your home, then there’s every reason for sticking with them – even if it means biting the bullet and accepting their advice on pricing. After all, good agents do know what they are talking about.
