This month Liz ‘had a break’ and we would normally be expecting a postcard from her - unfortunately not this time.

A few weeks ago, she was in the garden, standing on a bench to check her overflow was working. The next thing she knew, she was on the ground in excruciating pain and it was later discovered that she had broken a vertebra in her back.

After a week of agony she was booked in to Salisbury Hospital for a pioneering operation and is now recovering at home. I am sure you will all join to wish her well. In the meantime my dear friend Carol Waterkeyn has been helping out when she can, and I don’t know what I would have done without her.

I shall shortly be getting temporary help on a regular basis because I have no real idea how long the recovery period is for a broken back.

The ironic thing is that Liz was telling me how accident prone her son was just the day before she fell off her bench. I am now thinking it runs in the family. Through all her trauma, I’m pleased to say that Liz kept a very level head. One of her first questions after her fall was whether or not she was paid up for the office Euro Lottery syndicate!

Enjoy this magazine. I have made it as interesting as I possibly can, even down to our company name change, which would have been mundane if it didn’t have such a lot of history behind it. See page 10.

Battle expected

for Wellington’s letter

Following the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June, a remarkable glimpse into the Duke of Wellington’s preparations for battle is being offered for sale The letter, written by the Duke on 8 May 1815 as he made crucial plans for his most decisive conflict, comprises a single sentence requesting `medicines and materials required for the use of this army` to be sent `as soon as possible`. Addressed to The Secretary of War, it was received in Whitehall just four days later.

“The Duke of Wellington was a prolific correspondent,” notes Robert Ansell, the books and manuscripts consultant at Lawrences Auctioneers in Crewkerne, where the letter will be

auctioned on 31 July. “However, this letter reveals much about him in just a single sentence.

Napoleon’s army was beginning its advance on Brussels and the King of the Netherlands had just placed his own soldiers under the Duke of Wellington’s command. In this brief missive, Wellington shows himself to be organised and concerned for the care and welfare of his men.”

The letter has been consigned for sale from a lady in Dorset whose family has owned it for over a century. It is expected to make £1,000-1,500.

From Wimborne Minster to Westminster Politics have been much in the air in recent months, and pupils from Allenbourn Middle School have now had the chance to see where the action takes place.

Year 7 children, led by teacher Jane Jackson, travelled to Parliament, watched the House of Commons and the House of Lords in action, and had a session with the Parliament Education Service. They explored Westminster and had a photograph taken with Big Ben. They were met by their local Conservative MP, Michael Tomlinson, one of the new intake of MPs since May’s general election.

He had visited Allenbourn, with the Liberal Democrat candidate Vikki Slade, during the election campaign, so had already met some of the children.

Teacher Amber Nash said it was a most interesting and enjoyable day. “It’s important for young people to see what goes on in Parliament, and it was great to meet Mr Tomlinson again now that he is officially an MP.”

Fordingbridge Twinning Association’s annual French boules game took place at Sandy Balls Holiday Village. Organised by the Fordingbridge Twinning Association, twinned with Vermoutiers, in Normandy, the game attracted nearly 40 competitors.

‘Lacey Lightfoot goes to…’ is launched

even of the 10 successful authors who entered the mags4dorset short story competition in 2014 gathered at the Elephant and Castle in West Moors for the launch of their e-book on 19 June.

The anthology was judged and brought together by author Janine Pulford, the editor of Viewpoint and the front cover was drawn by designer Dan Lee at mags4dorset.

‘Lacey Lightfoot goes to…’ is a compilation of short stories about a young lady and all the mishaps, romances and frightening situations she gets into on her travels at home and abroad.

Janine said, “Although the authors write in different styles, the stories all fit together to form a perfect read for the summer.

Will and Aaron raise money for a trip to Ecuador

Rotary president George Phillips said, “It was a great pleasure to put this show on for the town. Rotarians worked alongside senior members of the community to create a fete that not even the George Phillips British summer could dampen. I look forward to working on this again next year, when we have already booked 18 June. If anyone wants to help make the fete even bigger and better then please get in touch with me through the Ferndown Rotary website.”

Verwood U3A Open Day Aims for 200 Verwood U3A has a special reason to invite you to its Open Day on 26 September at Verwood Memorial Hall, 10 am till 1pm when it hopes to recruit its 200th member.

Despite its name (University of the 3rd Age) the U3A is not a university; it’s a voluntary self-help charity and everyone, of whatever background or experience, is welcome.

There is a host of activities to help those no longer in fulltime employment to enjoy a more active, healthy and sociable retirement.

A rising membership means more opportunities can be provided. Coach trips are now being organized by a new travel group. So far members have enjoyed visits to Kingston Lacy, the Bombay Sapphire Gin Distillery, and Mottisfont Gardens. A Wareham boat trip and an Isle of Wight cruise are planned.

Other activities include guitar jamming, local and general history, French and Spanish, dancing, art, psychology, badminton, bird watching and bridge. The computing and technology group has helped many members to make sense of their laptops, smart phones and tablets.

GENEROSITY AT PANTO RAISES £1,000

Verwood Pantomime Society presented £1,000 to DEBRA, the charity for people with, and research into, epidermolysis bullosa (inherited skin disorders that cause the skin to become very fragile).

The money was raised after the shows at the production of ‘Aladdin’ in January at the Verwood Hub. Su Gardiner, chairman and co-producer of the pantomime society said, “The society would like to thank their audiences for their generosity.”

The next show in January 2016 will be ‘Beauty and the Beast’ by Alan P Frayn and tickets go on sale at the Hub Box office on 1 October.

Museum Fordingbridge

Many of you may be able to remember the days before central heating, doubleglazing and well-insulated houses. Often the main living room would be heated by an open fire but the bedrooms,

where open fires were mostly reserved for times of sickness, were little warmer than the outside temperature.

Ice on the inside of bedroom windows was not uncommon in the winter months.

What a comfort it was then to have your bed prewarmed by a hot water bottle and to know that the bottle

would keep you warm well into the night.

From the early 16th century, beds were aired by using a bed warming pan. This was shaped like a frying pan with a lid and a long handle. The copper pan would be filled with hot embers and would be thrust between the sheets, where the long handle enabled the whole of the bed to be warmed up. However, the pan was not left in the bed after it had been aired because of the fear of burning the sleeper or setting fire to the bedclothes.

Containers made of zinc, copper, glass earthenware and even wood were later used that could be filled with hot water, wrapped in cloth and left in the bed with the sleeper - thus keeping them warm for most of the night. In the 19th and 20th centuries loafshaped stoneware hot water bottles were manufactured by companies such as Langlyware, Grimswades and Royal Doulton. The older models had a ceramic threaded stopper, which was prone to leaking, whilst later models had a washer that made them more watertight.

Hot water bottles were not just used in bed but were also handy to keep travellers warm in unheated horsedrawn carriages. The Royal Doulton Company produced ceramic stoneware hot water bottles for the London and North East Railway Company and it was not unusual for passengers in early motor cars to be kept warm by a hot water bottle.

In 1903 a Croatian engineer, Eduard Penkala patented the first rubber hot water bottle, which he called the Termofor and these gradually took over from stoneware ones. As central heating, double-glazing, better house insulation and electric blankets became more common, the use of hot water bottles declined.

It is only recently that rising energy costs and concern about the use of fossil fuels has resulted in a resurgence in the sale of hot water bottles or similar devices that can be heated in a microwave oven.

Fordingbridge Museum has a range of bed warming devices on show and is open every day from 11am to 4pm (not Sunday).

Museum Trustee Julian Hewitt said, “It’s about two-and-a-half feet by three feet and is made of quite thick leather. It is covered in straps and what look like pockets that are held together by very robust looking rivets. Our staff are mystified by the item, which is part of the collection of artefacts once owned

by John Shering that forms the basis of the museum collection. John collected a wide range of historical items - most of which have been easily identified but this one has got us all baffled. We would welcome any suggestions as to what it might be and would be thrilled if we were to get a positive identification.�

‘Life in a Hospital’

IS A HIT ONLINE Charles Michael Duke is a born entertainer who is refusing to let the fact that he has cystic fibrosis prevent him from performing

aving been forced to spend much of the last year in hospital, Charles, from Hordle, has turned the experience into a positive one and released a comedy video performing his self-penned song ‘Life in a hospital’.

It notched up 4,000 views in the first 48 hours online.

His previous video ‘I’ve Got Cystic Fibrosis’ https:// www.youtube.com/ watch?v=4MaEFDjhgz8 has been viewed on YouTube more than 20,000 times.

Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening genetic condition – only half of all people suffering with it live to celebrate their 40th birthday.

Charles has had a catalogue of problems related to his condition, including a collapsed lung. He is currently on the transplant

list waiting for a double lung transplant.

Charles said, “Most people dread going to hospital, but when you spend as much time as I do in there, you really do start to find good things about the experience. I see hard working, committed and skilled doctors and nurses and I wanted to do something positive for the NHS, because let’s be honest, I basically owe my life to them and their ongoing care.”

Charles also hopes his video will highlight the topic of organ donation. On his recent 20th birthday in May, he posted this impassioned message on his Facebook page: “To be honest what I’d really like (for my birthday) is some new lungs - but the thing is - it’s not like they’re

In fact in the UK alone there are over 10,000 people who need some form of organ, and one in three of these people will die waiting for it.

“It’s a change we’ve been thinking about for a long time, but we have waited until we were confident to take it on,” said Ben, the managing director. “We have chosen this name in memory of Eric Pulford who died in 2005 just before his 90th birthday and we feel it is a fitting way to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death.”

The end of the great days of British film posters Sadly, Eric’s retirement marked the end of the great days of British film posters, which were being taken over by computer graphics.

Ironically, his grandchildren’s great strengths lie in that precise field, but ‘that’s progress’ as they say and Ben and Louis are now ready to take on the name Pulford Publicity and do it justice.

“I think Granddad would be happy to know that we have built such a successful company here in Dorset and we want to continue to grow the business in his memory.

I know we don’t have offices in London, but who knows what the future will hold,” said Ben. Alma survives Eric and is now 103. She remembers Pulford Publicity vividly and recalled nearly all the history for this article. Their children, Janice, Gilly, Nick and Robert remember Eric as a quiet man and a good father.

Busier than usual Although Pulford Publicity Limited is the new company name, business is not affected, nor is the trading name of mags4dorset.

“It isn’t business as usual, though,” says Ben. “It’s business is busier than usual. The name change has been a long time coming because we wanted to be sure of our ground before becoming Pulford Publicity. We will do the name justice by using our creative talents to produce work to meet the high standards that our grandfather would be proud of.”

elay For Life is about to take place. Raising money for Cancer Research UK, it will include a performance by the Rock Choir at Ferndown Leisure Centre following the opening ceremony on 11 July when cancer survivors walk the first lap of the track followed in turn by each relay team.

The youngest survivor Charlotte Jackson (7) is attending for her 3rd year, celebrating two years in remission from leukaemia.

Visitors are very welcome to come and see this inspirational event and support Cancer Research UK.

Fundraising stalls and afternoon tea will be available. Candle bags to dedicate in remembrance or celebration of those affected by cancer will also be available.

At 10pm the Candle of Hope ceremony will take place and the track will become lit, a truly memorable sight.

Emmanuel bikers Emmanuel Middle School PTFA organised a fundraising bike ride from Potterne Park on 13 June to raise money to pay for a new WIFI system.

The options were a cycle trail through Moors Valley with a family quiz or a more extreme single-track route led by Darren Orchard from Sustrans and two members of staff.

The school also had the use of a tandem for 15 minute rides, which was lent for the day by Sandy Balls Holiday Park.

The Italian Market in Ringwood basked in sunshine on Friday 19 June and was there again the following day, but with an accordion player to add another special little Italian touch.

I hope they come back. I normally have a coffee in the town at Love Italy, so it’s nice to see them joining in with the market spirit.”

Organiser Mandy Oldfield from Ringwood Town Council said, “I am really enjoying putting on these events and people seem to be receiving them very well and it certainly adds variety to their shopping experience.”

The next planned market is a Christmas Market on 5 December.

Armed Forces Day in Ringwood on 27 June has been hailed as a great success Crowds were left reeling from the firing of muskets and cannons demonstrated by volunteers from Nothe Fort, a Weymouth based charitable group and music displays from Ringwood pipe band.

There were circus workshops, fair rides and arena displays. WW1 re-enactors recruited youngsters as soldiers and cooked up treats for people between displays in the arena area. Organiser Mandy Oldfield said, “The weather has been absolutely brilliant for us and the crowds were amazing and I have received nothing but positive comments all day, I hope we will do even better next year.”

This is the first event of this type in Ringwood

and there were lots of vintage military vehicles, talks from the Normandy Veterans and support from SSAFA, Combat Stress and the War Widows Fund.

Local MP Desmond Swayne was introduced to crowds at the start of the day and stressed how important it is for people to support

servicemen and women.

He also suggested that Ringwood is getting a bit of a reputation as the ‘Festival Town’ of the New Forest.

Normandy Veterans

Cantus, Ringwood Choral Society Review by Helena Houghton The parish church in Ringwood was packed to hear Cantus, Ringwood Choral Society, sing Handel’s Messiah, which met with rapturous applause on 20 June.

The choir, under the baton of musical director, Malcolm Harding BA (Mus) MTC, produced a sound that a choir twice their size could have been proud of. The performance was enhanced by their focus and variety of dynamics.

They were accompanied by Timothy Rice ARCO, an Associate of the London College of Music, who accompanies both the Lymington and Ringwood Choral Societies as well as being the Director of Music at Hordle Parish Church.

True to his word, Malcolm Harding gave the solo opportunities to young singers, who

plan to make their futures as professional musicians. The soprano soloist was Catherine Smith, who produced a well rounded tone, with refreshingly true high notes. Olivia Carstairs sang the alto solos with perfect diction and good presence. The tenor soloist was Daniel Bell, who produced good dynamics and a rich timbre and bass soloist, Alex Cook gave a remarkably mature rendition of ‘The Trumpet Shall Sound’, as good as any produced by established professional basses.

It was so heartening to hear such up and coming talent, which augers well for the future of music in our area.

Ellingham Cricket success on the field

Ellingham Cricket Colts have finished a strong winter indoor season with trophies for teams in several age groups in the East Dorset 2014/15 Indoor league.

The biggest title went to the U10 first team who won Division 1 after a tense finals day in April that saw them beat both Parley teams to lift the trophy.

The U9s were unbeaten in the Softball Division to take the title. There was also a win for the U13 team in Division 3.

The U10 team faced the Parley Pirates in the semi-final; however some wayward bowling from Ellingham saw the Pirates post an imposing 160 all out with Ed Spry taking 3 wickets for 32 runs. It was more daunting when in reply 3 Ellingham wickets fell in a single over with the score in the 30s.

Matthew King and Toby Richardson kept their heads to slowly chip away at the score. Matthew retired but returned as Ed Spry was out and the two boys then continued their partnership to see the team home by 2 wickets in the final over.

After the nail-biting semi-final, the team then had to play the Parley Panthers in the final. Any thoughts that Ellingham had been drained by their earlier efforts were soon dispelled as they bowled out the Parley team for 114. Max Pepperell and Robbie Hemmings making good inroads before Robbie was dismissed. Max, supported by Matthew Workman, took the team to the brink of victory. Matthew was out with 8 runs needed but Max ensured his Ellingham team were home by 4 wickets with almost 4 overs to spare.

Ringwood Farmers’ Markets The Hampshire Farmers’ Market brings an abundance of tasty food to The Furlong, generally on the third Saturday of the month. The next markets are on 25 July and 29 August. New venue for Ringwood WI As from August, the Ringwood WI will be moving to a new venue.

Members will meet on the 4th Monday of the month at 2pm at Greyfriars Community Centre, Christchurch Road, Ringwood BH24 1DW. In August there will be a demonstration of knitting machines by Maureen Gulliver and on 28 September, speaker Trudy McKnight will talk about The Body Shop.

This means they can be used for all types of jewellery.

Their name comes from the Latin for red, and these stones can be both red and pink.

Large rubies are rarer and more difficult to find than large diamonds, emeralds and sapphires. This means that the value of a ruby increases with size more than any other gemstone.

Historically, rubies were worn by kings, leaders and heads of tribes as they believed the stone would help their leadership and decisionmaking skills as well as give them power and strength.

The Ellingham and Ringwood Agricultural Society will be holding its popular show on Saturday 8 August with events and classes running from 9am until around 5.30pm. A wide variety of horse classes are held each year with many

being qualifiers for national competitions. Show jumping classes are held throughout the day and are a major attraction to both the general public and competitors.

Heavy horse displays are always very popular.

Dairy and beef cattle as well as donkeys are on show. Also extremely popular are the dog competitions. In the horticultural marquee, local people display their home-made produce and

there are children’s sections, too. The cakes, breads and scones are sure to make your mouth water.

Handicrafts of many kinds will be lovingly displayed with amateur photography and art sections for various mediums including ceramics.

n fact Ringwood Town Council staff have been inundated with positive comments.

Since coming into bloom residents and visitors have been pouring through the doors to say well done and heap praise on those responsible.

Office manager Christine Smith said, “It’s wonderful that people take the time to tell us about the good things we do and not just the bad, I hope the flowers will last a while longer.”

The Gateway Square and building has been in place for three years and provides services to the town, district and county council officers in carrying out their roles.

Meetings, training, weddings and visitor

information are all provided at the Gateway with rents, parking clocks and other services being supported by staff there.

Chairman of the Recreation and Open Spaces committee who is responsible for the gardens is newly elected Councillor Andy Briers. He said, “The garden is a fantastic backdrop for weddings and provides a great ‘feel good factor’ for people relaxing in the Gateway Square during the day.

When wandering around Salisbury the last thing you expect to see are medieval barons with a modern twist.

An astronaut with a sword, a baron with Terry Pratchett’s Discworld characters on his back and another sporting the interior of Salisbury Cathedral.

These are just some of the quirky characters that form a display called the Barons’ Charter; the biggest mass participation public art event ever seen in the city.

Staged by the Trussell Trust together with Salisbury Cathedral and Wild Art, the 25 life-sized barons have been created in celebration of the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta.

They have been sponsored by local businesses and beautifully decorated by artists.

Salisbury is home to perhaps the best-preserved copy of Magna Carta. This Great Charter of 1215 formed the foundation of liberty and led to the rule of constitutional law. It was drawn up to make peace between the unpopular and greedy King John and a group of rebel barons and is probably the most celebrated document in English history.

The Barons’ Charter is a reminder of a time gone by and you can pick up a trail map from various outlets and find them throughout the city in all their modern glory.

They are on view until 6 September and will then be auctioned to raise money for the Trussell Trust, the UK’s leading poverty charity.

ohn qualified from the University of Bristol in 2003 and started his first job in Swanage in the same year. Having spent two enjoyable years there and learning about life in general practice, he took up a job as a senior house officer in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Southampton Hospital. This involved carrying out oral surgery on a day-to-day basis as well as looking after in-patients on the ward. It gave John an excellent grounding in surgical technique and enabled him to sit the exams to become a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons of the Royal College of Surgeons (England).

After the time spent working in hospital, John wanted to return to general practice and settled into a private clinic. A dentist who enjoys being able to provide good quality dental care, he is particularly interested in root-fillings and aesthetic restorative solutions. Through clear communication and a gentle approach, patients feel at ease and involved in their care at all times. He will be joining Moorlands Dental Surgery on 10 August to replace Casey Carnall who has moved to take up another dental position.

Practice owner, Andrew Hawker said, “We would like to thank Casey for her time with us and wish her all the best for the future. We would also like to welcome John Edward who will be a valued member of our team.�

Away from dentistry John enjoys getting away with his young family and exploring in their campervan. When time allows you may find him hacking through the undergrowth on a local golf course or cycling through the lanes.

Patients previously registered with Casey will automatically transfer to John Edward and those who have an appointment in July will be contacted shortly to rearrange it. If you are in pain or having dental problems, you will still be able to be seen by the rest of the team.

West Moors: West Moors has a population of around 7-8,000 and is a vibrant community. Served by a range of independent businesses and stores, it retains its village atmosphere from days gone by It appeared in the Domesday Book, and was known as La More from around the 14th century. There were several slight changes to the name until the area became known as West Moors. Certainly by the time the railway came in 1847 it was West Moors, and formed a picturesque hamlet at the northern end of the ancient parish of West Parley. West Moors Parish Council was created in 1956.

The growth from hamlet to village was in the most part due to the arrival of the railway and a line from Southampton and Dorchester was built with a station at West Moors. It sadly closed in the 1960s with the last passenger service in 1968.

Station Road bears testament to those railway years.

During the Second World War, a Ministry of Defence Fuel Depot, located to the north of the village, played a crucial role for the armed forces. Huge numbers of American troops and personnel arrived in the area. The fuel facility and military connections remain but the Americans are long gone.

West Moors has grown to a sizeable village and has a busy social club, (home to the current BDO World Darts Champion ‘Scotty Dog’ Mitchell), youth club, a first class bowling green, library, village hall, skatepark, playgrounds, tennis courts, football pitches and artificial grass courts as well as two pre-schools, two first schools, a middle school, three churches and regular bus services. With all these facilities, it›s not surprising that there is a whole raft of clubs and societies that thrive in West Moors.

Artist and author celebrates 100th birthday West Moors resident Richard Earnshaw celebrated his 100th birthday on 7 June at the St Leonards Hotel

He was joined by East Dorset District Council Chairman, Cllr Steven Lugg along with close family and friends.

Cllr Lugg said, “It was an honour to be part of this special day for Richard, his extended family, and friends. I was privileged to meet an amazing gentleman, but also to meet such a lovely family.”

Born in London during the First World War, Richard developed a passion for exploring the English countryside, particularly in his homemade canoe.

During the Second World War, he served in India as a captain in the Royal Indian Artillery, resuming his career as an administrator for the newly formed National Health Service after the war.

Richard married Katherine in 1942 and they raised three children: Jan, Christopher and Sue, in Harrow, Middlesex. Shortly after retirement they moved to West Moors, which gave Richard the opportunity to pursue his talent and love of art. He was active in the West Moors Art Society painting Dorset’s beautiful countryside and waterways, and still serves as life president.

His book, ‘My War – A Personal Recollection’ was published in 1999. He has also had articles published in local magazines. Richard continues to write for family and friends, self-publishing articles and short stories for their enjoyment.

Those wanting to part with their treasures saw them go under the hammer at Cottees Saleroom in Wareham on 7 July. The programme has yet to be televised.

Castle greets its Waterloo

Highcliffe Castle would be a very different building had it not been for Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo 200 years ago When Lord Stuart de Rothesay created Highcliffe Castle in the 1830s, he used ancient stonework from demolished buildings in Normandy, collected during his time as British Ambassador in Paris. Stuart was the Duke of Wellington’s ‘right hand man’ during the Peninsular War and was with Wellington in Brussels shortly before the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.

The bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo was marked at the castle on 18 June with a diorama of over 4,000 model soldiers in battle formation, created by local historian Martin Axton.

The display will be on view until 13 September. Martin will also be sharing his expertise on the Napoleonic Wars every Sunday in the Library Gallery at 3pm. In addition, Stephen Petty, a Fellow of the International Napoleonic Society and Member of the Waterloo Association, will be giving a series of eight illustrated talks throughout the summer at Highcliffe Castle. The dancing told stories of romance, heartache, sadness and desire.

Solo performances were mesmerising and the ladies’ colourful gypsy-style dresses connected us to the roots of this artistic folk dance that originated from Andalusia in southern Spain hundreds of years ago. The girls must have worked hard behind the scenes with their numerous costume changes.

Complemented by flamenco guitarist Uri Tal, vocalisation by Luis El Mono, a flamenco singer from Jerez and the rhythmic palmas (hand clapping) by Ester, the evening showcased

rhythmical footwork and well executed choreographies.

I particularly liked the romance between the male dancer and the girls and the use of the shawl to create a superb flow to provocative body movements.

The near capacity audience showed their appreciation with rapturous applause and Ester delighted everyone at the end with a demonstration of that real flamenco feminine fire.

Wheelbarrow

Although it’s a traditional family fair with plenty of stalls, arena events and games, as well as terrier racing, vintage cars and motorbikes - there is an added and unusual factor - a wheelbarrow race up Blissford Hill. Not for the faint-hearted, competitors push a wheelbarrow laden with Polly or Molly, the fair mascots, up an incredibly steep hill. Level 2 Football Coach Helen Munday has been coaching since 2001 at Rossgarth FC. Setting the standards for dance

A

ndrea Knowles Academy of Dancing was established in 1992 in Parkstone and five years later opened a further branch in West Moors.

Two years ago, Andrea’s daughter Kimberley started her own academy called Tip-Toes, which specialises in baby ballet and tap and has branches in West Moors, Ferndown, Christchurch and Parkstone. Q. When arranging a mortgage, is it best to deal direct with the lender or go through a broker?

A. No question, go through a broker every time.

For one thing there are an incredible amount of different mortgages available, (around 13,500 if you include buy to let products).

Different lenders have different products and therefore you are much better off using a professional intermediary to find the best deal to suit your particular circumstances.

Another important fact is that lenders tend to deal with brokers more quickly than they do with private individuals - this may be partly down to the fact that brokers are a source of significant amounts of business. But there’s also the obvious point that brokers are far better equipped than either you or your estate agent to deal with lenders and help smooth out complications that might arise with your mortgage application.

The level of service from some lenders can be slow and the communication poor but our in-house broker spends hours on the phone chasing cases to ensure that they go through as quickly as possible. I find that a lack of communication, from anyone involved in the selling/buyer process is what causes the stress and problems. Lenders dealing direct with purchasers only provide information solely to them who may not fully understand the process. When only vague information is

available and communicated to all relevant parties, the vendor can start to question the buyers ability to proceed, they can lose patience and the stress levels of everyone involved starts to rise. Having a broker who understands the process fully ensures that accurate information and updates are passed on to everyone else involved and brokers are able to respond promptly to questions asked by the lender.

All in all, it is far better to use a broker than try to handle things yourself. As an agent I am not going to risk a sale by referring you to any old broker, I would only point you in the direction of someone I have faith in to provide honest advice from the outset so that we avoid problems further down the line. It is always infinitely better if the professional advisors involved in such a complex business as house purchase already have an established working relationship with each other. This helps avoid unfortunate delays and misunderstandings that can otherwise occur.

So my advice is - always speak to an independent mortgage broker. If you don’t know one then give me a call and I will put you in contact with someone who can provide you with the advice you require.

Join your Neighbourhood Watch Back in 1984, I was asked by a police officer if I would be interested in forming a Neighbourhood Watch.

I went to a meeting and six of us formed a steering committee.

We canvassed Ferndown North from road to road and after a long and arduous campaign we got things moving.

Next, we started a quarterly magazine and introduced a small subscription of £1 - the same amount is charged today.

Money was raised to enable us to carry on and eventually the Watch became self-sufficient and held events to raise awareness about home security.

We now run a shop at the Barrington Centre in Ferndown, where the general public can purchase security devices at reduced prices. The envy of Dorset, we provide this service to most of the county.

I feel we are one of the most successful Watch schemes helping to keep our county one of the safest places to live.

Lucky anniversary sunflowers CashUnity When Philip Newham from Verwood bought a bouquet from Petals Florist for his wife Stephanie on their 16th wedding anniversary, he didn’t realise what luck his romantic gesture would bring He went to great lengths to choose flowers to replicate Stephanie’s bouquet on their wedding day, which included sunflowers.

The Engineering Manager from Verplas entered his receipt into the monthly CashUnity draw, as he had done previously when he’d bought flowers from Petals, but this time his name was drawn as the winner of the £1,000 prize.

Made up of £500 cash and £500 in vouchers to spend at CashUnity businesses, Philip’s choice was easy. “I need a set of new tyres for the car,” he said deflating his romantic gesture slightly when he asked for £250 worth of vouchers for Ebblake Tyres.

However, to Stephanie’s delight, the rest of the vouchers have to be spent at Petals Florist, (the participating trader who originated the winning receipt), so she is anticipating some beautiful bouquets over the next six months – lucky Stephanie.

The ground-breaking initiative also received plenty of attention and support from heads of the local communities.
