Councillors back Spencer Flower Verwood Councillor Spencer Flower is the new leader of East Dorset District Council.

At a meeting of East Dorset Conservatives he was elected leader of the ruling Conservative group and therefore becomes leader of EDDC. This is the second time that Councillor Flower has held the position having been leader from 2008-2013.

He takes over from former councillor Ian Monks, who resigned last December ahead of the local authority merger debate.

Cllr Flower said: “My colleagues have shown their faith in me as the new leader of council at a time of significant financial and political challenge. I look forward to working together going forward as we attempt to deal with the difficult times ahead.”

Signs of spring are everywhere - from the snowdrops popping up along the roadsides, to the daffodils dancing in Wordsworth’s famous breeze.

It’s also birthday time in the Turner family with my mother and children celebrating their big days in February. Actually it’s my son’s 21st and I have spent the last few weeks looking through photos to find one of him that I can really embarrass him with.

It’s been amazing what I have found - 21 years ago we still printed out photos and I’ve spent hours looking through dusty albums and reliving so many happy memories. Photos of aunties and uncles, grandparents and school friends who I’ve lost touch with. Holidays that I’d forgotten about and ones that I wish I could repeat. I even found photos taken on Concorde that I thought I’d lost.

But on a sadder note, there are photos taken on the beach at Sousse in Tunisia where the attacks were last year and some taken at the top of the Twin Trade towers and showing the Manhattan skyline before the horrific attacks. I have some from Syria in areas now devastated by war and in Cairo when tourism thrived.

It’s made me realise just how fortunate we are to live in the UK. We may moan about many things but we feel safe and while going through airport security may be tedious and bag checks at large venues takes time, we know it is all essential to protect our way of life. The current threat level for international terrorism in the UK is assessed as severe, but we are able to carry on as usual enjoying a level of normality denied to so many throughout the world.

And as for the photo to embarrass Nic, well I do have a rather large choice….

Young indoor rowers from Colehill have raised more than £300 for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) A team of eight boys from St Michael’s Middle School rowed the equivalent of eight kilometres to support the charity.

The team - Scott Lever, Robert Cooper, Cameron Lowes, Harley Richardson, Ryan Atkins, Connor Stanley, Malachi Robinson and Alex Jordan - spent last term training for the sponsored event.

Headteacher Ron Jenkinson, said: “The boys chose the RNIB because one of the team members, Harley Richardson, is visually impaired and it is a wonderful cause to support.

“We’re incredibly proud of all their efforts and the help they received from teacher Mr Fountain who motivated them all the way.”

Youth club funding cut Funding is to be removed from council-run youth centres in Dorset in a bid to save £1m The county council currently provides support to young people through youth centres and clubs, plus direct work with individuals and groups costing £2.2m.

A protest was held outside county hall with young people and members of local communities who opposed the move trying to dissuade councillors from the changes. Consultations have been carried out on the future of youth services which were considered by the cabinet.

However after considering the results of the consultations, the cabinet unanimously agreed to move away from a buildings-based service to provide a more proactive and targeted youth service.

The buildings that are currently used as youth centres could be offered for community use.

Community allotments plan

after 90-year-old rescued from fire

Firefighters are advising the public to check electrical items for safety.

A 90-year-old Hampshire lady was recently rescued from a potentially fatal fire caused by an electrical therapeutic heat pad that overheated in her bed.

Incident Commander, Fred Pettersson said: “This incident could have easily turned into a fatal fire and highlights the importance of checking all your electrical items, particularly the ones you use at night.

‘We would urge the public to check all electrical items; heat pads and electric blankets, especially now if you’re using them more due to the recent colder weather. We would also ask the public to consider any older friends or relatives that may also use these items and help them check them.”

More information about electrical safety can be found in Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s (HFRS) electrical safety leaflet.

HFRS also provide home safety visits for anyone that may be vulnerable/live alone. Contact the Community Safety team on 023 8062 6809 to arrange one.

Students learn science can be fun

A new site has been suggested for allotments in St Leonards and St Ives.

Despite an established need for allotments, the parish council has not been able to find suitable land for use by the community.

However land at Beaver Farm, Lions Hill Way, Ashley Heath has been offered to the parish council.

The site is presently grassed and the proposal is to lease it to the parish council for an initial period of 15 years.

There is room for car parking for allotment holders and a mobile home is planned at the allotment to act as a deterrent to anti-social behaviour.

The proposal will be considered by East Dorset District Council planners.

Year 6 students at Allenbourn Middle School in Wimborne visited Winchester Science Centre to bring their science curriculum to life. They enjoyed taking part in the interactive hands-on science centre such as handshake mirrors that showed them how interesting the reflection of light can be, to the ‘Path of Pain’ interactive model that showed how medication travels throughout the circulatory system.

Chairman supports charities East Dorset District Council chairman Cllr Steve Lugg is continuing fund-raising for his chosen charities - PASHA (Homeless Hostels serving Bournemouth and East Dorset) and the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

A variety evening with Matt Black and friends will be held at the Barrington Theatre on 11 March while an evening of music and fun will celebrate St George’s Day at the Old Thatch, Stapehill.

There will be an 80s disco at RBL Ferndown on 30 April, and there will be a retiring collection for the charities after the EDDC civic service at St Mary’s Church, Ferndown on Sunday 1 May at 3pm.

GETTING WIMBORNE

‘Clean For The Queen’ Wimborne in Bloom is to join in with the National Campaign Clean for the Queen which has been launched ahead of her 90th birthday in April.

Cleaning will take place from Friday to Sunday 4-6 March and Wimborne in Bloom is calling for volunteers to help on Saturday and Sunday mornings, meeting at 34 Park Lane, Wimborne at 10am.

Keep Britain Tidy estimates that more than 30 million tons of litter is collected from

English streets every year. Local authorities spend an estimated £1billion a year clearing up the mess.

Richard Nunn, chairman of Wimborne in Bloom said: “Let us take a pride in the town and ensure that everywhere is spick and span and stays that way. Up to a million people are expected to take part in the campaign nationally. Let us make sure that Wimborne plays its part in honouring Her Majesty The Queen’s special birthday.”

Golfers support children’s charity Variety, the Children’s Charity, Wessex has received £6,120 from Dudsbury Golf Club Seniors. Ron Hobson, Seniors Captain 2015, presented a cheque to Frances Cornelius, chair of Wessex Variety. The money will pay for a wheelchair for a local child.

HELP older people at risk from cold weather A charity is calling for more donations for their Surviving Winter appeal to help local older people at risk with the recent drop in temperatures.

Tracy Melling, chief executive of the Dorset Community Foundation said: “Not only are older people more vulnerable to poor health from the effects of the cold, they are also likely to become more isolated and less likely to venture out of their homes. It is awful to think of an older person having to choose between eating and heating this winter.”

The foundation is urging anyone who receives a winter fuel allowance and does not need it, to donate it to the appeal so the money can be ‘recycled’ to help older people across Dorset get through the winter months. The foundation is working with Citizens Advice Bureaux across Dorset to distribute winter warmer grants to older people in fuel poverty. Older people who would like to apply for a grant should contact their local CAB. Funding raised from generous donations from the public since the re-launch of the appeal in mid-November last year has already helped over 100 older people over Christmas, funding activities such as lunches and community events during December.

Poaching isn’t a hobby QE’s circus stars

R

ural businesses are being hit by poachers travelling from urban areas to the countryside to poach birds, deer, rabbits and hare.

The problem was highlighted to police and crime commissioner, Martyn Underhill at a recent community day in Verwood.

PC Tom Clements, the neighbourhood officer for rural East Dorset, took Mr Underhill on a tour of his rural beat.

PC Clements explained that those involved in the poaching consider it to be a hobby; breeding dogs for coursing and using their vehicles to kill deer.

Alternatively, they come with the intent to poach pheasant or partridge, using catapults to bring the birds down which does not always kill the bird but can leave it injured.

The cost of poaching includes damage to fences, gates, crops and breeding stock. In a single night thousands of pounds worth of damage can be done and years of work destroyed.

The PCC was also told by a local gamekeeper how he and his family had suffered intimidation and threats after he had challenged groups of men on their land.

Mr Underhill said: “What should be realised is that the losses incurred impact significantly on

the rural economy, this means it affects not only the landowners but also those employed in the countryside. Some losses can be so severe that the viability of the business is threatened. These are honest hardworking people providing much needed jobs and bringing visitors to the area, with the knock on benefits this has to tourism.

Maintaining our rural estates is so important to the economy of Dorset.”

The rural neighbourhood team in East Dorset recognise that there is under reporting of crime across the rural area despite a lot having been done to improve communication and relationships. The team, which includes special constables, has been working with the gamekeepers and farmers, together with police officers from both Wiltshire and Hampshire to identify and target a number of offenders travelling into Dorset from outside the area. They spoke of the need to revise the legislation in respect of poaching to increase penalties and to make it easier for police to seize dogs from repeat offenders.

Mr Underhill said: “I shall be discussing the Poaching Act with our MPs to see if changes need to be made to support the farming community”

Musicians from Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne are adding a local flavour to a performance by a French circus company.

Circa Tsuica is visiting Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts with its hit show Opus 7. It is described as a feel-good blend of daredevil acrobatics and ripping brass rhythm and the 10 acrobatmusicians are being joined by teenagers selected from QE’s jazz orchestra.

The students began working with Circa Tsuica’s music director in December to learn the repertoire of Balkan brass and American jazz – and added their own local sounds into the mix. They also learnt the technique of ‘sound painting’ so they can move as they play – though the serious acrobatics will be left to the professionals.

The 13 musicians taking part are Philippa Almond, flute; Jazz Ashley, tenor sax; Hannah Conway, baritone sax; Christopher Coomes, tenor sax; Josh Eaton, trumpet; Harry Eldridge, alto sax; Hannah Gibb, clarinet; Charlotte Gray, trumpet; Jason Hayter, trumpet; Amy Hornsby, flute; Rebecca Jenkins, flute; Kate Miller Sparks, bassoon; and Joshua Plummer, euphonium who are all aged between 14-18.

Steve Glover, the jazz orchestra’s MD, said: “It’s a real privilege for our elite musicians to be involved with this project, and we are all very excited about the

upcoming performance at Lighthouse. Our band has played many gigs but none quite like this before” See the students perform on Sunday 6 March at 3pm.

On 1 April, West Moors Parish Council will have been in existence for 60 years.

To celebrate, the parish council is planning various events throughout the week of 23–29 May. These will include a pet blessing to be held at the memorial hall in Station Road on 29 May at 2pm.

All animals will be welcome, regardless of size or shape.

The parish council is also issuing its very first Parish Guide. Produced by MAGS4DORSET in partnership with the council, it will be free of charge and available shortly at local pick up points throughout the village.

Netball player impresses FOR A SECOND YEAR

Highest honour bestowed on veteran

A 17-year-old sportsperson who wants to play netball for England has impressed West Moors Parish Council for the second year running Miss Abi Bedford is the latest recipient of the council’s annual legacy award. She was presented with an engraved glass trophy by the chairman of the council, Cllr Penny Yeo, on 17 December.

Abi will also be able to claim up to £1,000 to help her progression in her chosen sport.

The purpose of the legacy award is to recognise an exemplary young sportsperson who needs extra help to reach their ambition, which encourages good competition, consequently bringing the excellence of young people to the forefront. The winning applicant is assessed not just on performance, but on their application and the mental strength that’s required to go on and become top of the sport that they participate in.

Abi Bedford was the winner of the legacy award in 2014. Her ultimate goal is to play netball for England. In the short-term she wants to progress to the Regional Performance Academy by the end of this summer and play in the Futures League (a junior version of the netball Super League).

Abi currently coaches the Ferndown Junior Netball Club as well as training to fulfill her own ambition.

Chairman, Penny Yeo said, “West Moors Parish Council is very proud to support her once more and the money the parish council is investing in this talented young athlete, we believe will pay dividends in the short and long term.”

A 95 year-old Ferndown man has received the highest award granted by the French Government for bravery and excellence in the military service to their nation.

Bill Howard was presented with the Chevalier, Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur to recognise his involvement in the liberation of France during the Second World War. He was a driver in the Royal Army Service Corps attached to the 6th Airborne Division and he landed on Gold Beach in Normandy to deliver medical and general supplies to field hospitals.

Taking the pressure off cooking By

I wonder how many readers received cookery books for Christmas. In Fordingbridge Museum we have a cookbook that was published in the mid-1930s to go with a then state-of-the-art pressure cooker, which is also on display

he pressure cooker was manufactured by a company based in the Tottenham Court Road in London called Easiwork. They also manufactured kitchen cabinets and their adverts for their kitchen furniture reflected the implication in the name of the company. Under the headline, “Now your kitchen can be truly modern” they maintain that, “Everything is kept spotless and tidy with supreme ease, drudgery is gone for ever and there are more leisure hours for you.” Some claim for what looks to us like a basic old fashioned cabinet!

Pressure cookers first appeared in the early 20th century and the example in the museum looks ominously like a very large handgrenade. A 1937 advert claims that it is the “greatest cooking development of modern times.”

Just as appliances now often have energy ratings and claim health benefits, we are assured that using the cooker, “saves 12/6 in the £ on fuel, retains vitamins, alleviates constipation and saves half the cooking times.”

The target audience for it is socially broad. We are told that it, “can be used in a country house or one roomed flat”. It is an interesting reflection on what was a transition time in terms of fuel sources in the kitchen that it can be used with, ”gas, electricity, oil or primus stove or coal range.”

The Guide to Better Cooking and Diet that was provided with the pressure cooker is fascinating. It is written by the rather upper-class sounding Mrs D D CottingtonTaylor who has first class diplomas in a variety of things including, High Class Cookery. And the foreword is by the even posher sounding Sir Wm Arbuthnot Lane Bt. He was an interesting surgeon and physician who had members of the aristocracy and royalty as his patients in the early 1920s, and promoted the prevention of cancer by dietary changes.

He resigned from the British Medical Association to found the New Health Society, which advocated whole foods, fruits and vegetables, sunshine and exercise and promoted his belief that health and longevity could be achieved by ensuring three bowel movements daily. He was looked on as a crank by many of his fellow medical practitioners despite the fact that many of his ideas and innovations are regarded as sensible and pioneering today.

The cookbook includes a section on recipes for slimming and vegetarians as well as ones for yachting and picnic parties.

It also invites the reader to enrol their children into a club based on two fictional twins Min and Vit. “Children need to feel important and confident – to achieve – to please - to glow with good spirits and vigour. Min and Vit will help YOUR CHILD to feel that way and to make the grade.”

Call into the museum when it opens at Easter to compare your contemporary cookbooks with something much older.

The law on pensions has changed. Every employer with at least one member of staff has new duties, including enrolling those who are eligible into a workplace pension scheme and contributing towards it. The process is automatic for staff, but not for employers.

A pension solution is out there for everyone Pensions – why is this word terrifying a generation and causing small business to panic?

espite increasing press coverage there are still gaps in people’s understanding of the need for a private pension and the cost to small businesses to provide one is causing stress and avoidance.

There are a lot of graphs and statistics that inform and terrify in equal parts – statements like ‘figures showing a generation sleepwalking towards an

impoverished old age’ (Daily Express 14.09.15), while factually accurate, are virtually designed to cause panic.

Surveys continually show that people, especially those in middle age, are not saving enough to fund their retirement. This group doesn’t have generous final salary pensions like their parents and appear to have missed the increasingly dire messages to start saving.

Since the turn of the century, the government has started making serious legislation to plug the so called “pension gap” by forcing small business to provide a pension. They are also cracking down on excessive pension fees.

These changes, and the high level of knowledge in the younger age bracket, cover those in their 20s well but many people in their late 30s and early 40s are giving

the appearance of ostriches – putting their heads down and working hard in the somewhat romantic hope that everything will work out for the best. At the same time research shows that small businesses don’t understand what they need to do and are panicking that the costs will ruin them.

Panic is unnecessary – for the individual all that’s needed is to check with your employer when a pension will be available and then pay as much into it as you can afford. For the small business there are multiple auto enrolment providers who can take as little or as much of the work from you as you wish.

Take a deep breath, work out what you can afford then find someone to provide it. A pension solution is out there for everyone; you just have to be open to finding one.

World Jazz Jamboree: featuring jazz styles from Africa, Europe, India, The Middle East and South America.

Jazz Village: in Bournemouth town centre with a live music stage. Catch the lively R&B Charlie Farran Band there on Friday night. Food and drink stalls and a programme of street jazz across the town with additional razzmajazz pockets planned for Westbourne, Southbourne and Boscombe.

Education programme offering jazz workshops for young musicians, a schools ‘Z Factor’ jazz competition Awards ceremony with concert. This will feature The Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Bournemouth University Big Band plus special guests.

The festival will also include many of Bournemouth and Dorset’s best-loved jazz musicians and groups such as tenor sax player Ian Ellis’s Quartet, trumpet player Andy Urquhart’s Sound of Blue Note and Zoe Schwarz’s award winning Blue Commotion band at Canvas on Friday night.

At the launch, Gerry Clarke said it is hoped that an event in partnership with AFC Bournemouth will lead to a show at the Vitality stadium.

He added, “Given the success of the festival last year we are confident that the BJF this year will have a positive impact on the town and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors who come to visit the festival over the next few years.”

Calling all Smallholders Poor Common, poor trees! (and anyone interested in becoming one) Would you be surprised to learn that in Dorset there are over 1700 smallholders and pet livestock keepers?

Some keep a variety of stock, pigs, sheep, goats and even a few cows, others prefer to just keep a couple of them as pets. Sheep are very popular lawnmowers!

Smallholders and owners of even one pet goat, pig, sheep or cow, are governed by the same legislation as any livestock farmer owning numerous cattle, sheep etc. All must have a holding number (this denotes the premises where the animals are kept) and all stock must be individually identified, usually with ear tags. The owner must also keep records of any medicines used and movements to and from the holding. Owners of more than 50 poultry must register them with the Animal and Plant Health Agency If this sounds daunting, our animal health team is here to help with the red tape.

If asked, most people who own livestock will probably say: “It’s worth it.”

Karen and I in our role as Animal Health Officers have visited many smallholders and have built up a good relationship with many owners and their animals. One being Sir Desmond a middle white pig who lives with his Lady Gladys, a Tamworth sow, on one of our local country estates. He is getting on in years but still enjoys the outdoor life - a real character and I have heard he is to become a dad yet again!

We cannot possibly visit all smallholdings but one way we managed to reach a wider audience was by organising a smallholders’ evening last May at Kingston Maurward, which was extremely successful. If we had enough interest expressed from smallholders in the eastern half of the county another evening could be arranged.

NOTICES ON GATE WITH NOTICEBOARD BEHIND

Criticism has been voiced following the stapling of notices to trees and gates on Poor Common in Ferndown, whilst the noticeboards have been left bare.

Christchurch and East Dorset Countryside Team is holding a volunteer day there and have stapled laminated notices to trees and gates to publicise the event.

Local resident Tony Brown who knows the area well and has arranged litter picks there in the past said, “I think the signs spoil the ambience and aesthetics of the woodland walk.

I appreciate the requests on the posters but why the rangers didn’t put them on the specifically designed notice boards is strange. I’m not sure the staples will do the trees or fences any good either.”

The Countryside team said, “There was no intention to harm the trees. We selected ones with a thick fissured bark and the notices, including staples, will be removed as soon as the event has taken place.”

Volunteers are being invited to help clear rhododendron from Poor Common and should meet at the junction of Heathlands Avenue and Cammel Road, Ferndown (SZ076985) BH22 8RW on Thursday 3 March, 10am-4pm.

Gloves, tools and refreshments will be provided. The volunteer day is to encourage local residents to take an interest in their local green spaces and do something positive for the environment and conservation. Staples not included!

Chip Fido before 6 April Dog owners could face a fine of up to £500 if their dogs aren’t microchipped after 6 April The legislation has been brought in to tackle welfare and irresponsible dog ownership. Owners were given three years from 6 April 2013 to get their dogs chipped and secondary legislation under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 comes into force this April, requiring the microchipping of all dogs in England.

From 6 April, owners must have their dogs microchipped and registered on one of the authorised commercial databases available.

They will have to register the details of any new owner before they sell or

give the dog away. Owners will be required to keep their contact details up to date on the databases.

Ministers hope the change in the law will help reunite owners with lost or stolen pets and relieve some of the burden on animal charities and local authorities.

Local authorities, the police, dog wardens and vets will all have scanners.

Any dog brought to the attention of police or local authorities will be scanned. Owners of those without a microchip, and who can be traced, will be given a short period to comply.

If they fail to get their dog chipped, they will face a fine.

A legal loophole, which has meant dog owners have been immune from prosecution when their animal has attacked on private property, will also be closed.

However, they will be protected from prosecution if their dog attacks a trespasser or burglar on their land.

RINGWOOD IS THROWING ITS OWN GIANT STREET PARTY TO CELEBRATE THE QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY While 10,000 guests including the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince William and Prince Harry will be attending the Patron’s Lunch along the Mall on 12 June, all Ringwood’s residents have been invited to join in the town’s own celebration.

The street party in the Market Place from 2-6pm will follow a big clean-up in the town.

As part of the national Clean for the Queen initiative, residents are being asked to clean up their town or carry out a project to improve the environment.

In Ringwood, the town council is hoping to co-ordinate these activities, which will start in early June. It is asking groups and individuals to come forward and let them know what they are planning to do and show them how to get involved. Working with Churches Together and other groups, the town council will be helping clean up parks and open spaces in the town and provide equipment to volunteers wishing to get involved.

Helping co-ordinate efforts is town clerk Steve Nash who said: “This will be a wonderful way for people to really show their love for the town, for The Queen, and to celebrate together.”

Town mayor Councillor Michael Thierry added: “This is an important event for The Queen as Britain’s longest serving monarch and I am proud we are to be part of the celebrations.”

More details on how to get involved will be available on the town council website and Facebook pages and people are invited to start registering their interest now.

Cost of school meals to rise The price of school meals in Hampshire is to go up by 10p.

Hampshire County Council, has agreed to the increase which will come into effect on 11 April It is the first increase in six years and Hampshire County Council will charge £2.10 for a two course cooked meal from 11 April Executive lead member for children’s services, Councillor Keith Mans said: “A healthy lunch at school contributes significantly to a child’s wellbeing and their capacity to learn through to the end of the school day.

We’re very proud of the high standard of school meals that our catering service (HC3S) provides, using locally sourced produce.”

Over 70,000 school meals are served in Hampshire’s primary and secondary schools across the county, daily.

One of the winners is in the Ringwood area with a second along the road at Woodgreen.

Poulner Baptist Chapel, Hangersley, which is open to the local community, took the award as winner of the ‘Extensions’ category.

Woodgreen’s Cherry Tree Cottage, a traditional thatched cottage that was rebuilt after being damaged by fire in 2010, won the ‘Individual Building’ category.

Over 40 people nominated more than 20 separate schemes, celebrating high quality development and recognising the

contribution that excellent design makes to the built environment of the New Forest.

An assessment panel made up of five members of the National Park Authority’s Planning Development Control Committee met to consider the nominated schemes.

Pat Wyeth, chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority’s Planning Committee, said around 1,000 planning applications are submitted in the National Park each year – 88% of which are approved – and the awards scheme is another way to highlight the importance of good design in the National Park.

“We were pleased with the variety of buildings put forward and the panel felt that the winning schemes really contribute to and reinforce the character of the built environment of the New Forest – a truly special place.”

A development of seven new homes at Southview, Gosport Lane, Lyndhurst won the ‘Larger Development’ category, with two new dwellings at Derritt Lane, Bransgore being highly commended.

TOAD PATROL A warning to take extra care on roads after dark has been issued by conservationists worried about the fate of toads.

With spring round the corner, toads are coming out of hibernation and doing what comes naturally – returning to the pond where they were born to spawn and breed.

Unfortunately the toads with a home address in Poulner have to cross the road to get to their pond from the forest and many don’t make it because drivers fail to see them.

‘Toad Patrols’ are being set up by Ringwood Amphibian Conservationists again this year ready for the annual migration.

Teresa Baker has been organising volunteers for 27 years to help escort the toads safely across Gorley Road.

She said: Spring is on the way and on warm wet evenings toads will start migrating and they need our help. Unfortunately they start at dusk and after dark and many are killed by traffic.

“Toads are on the decline. Last year we helped 393 toads cross but in the past there have been over 1,000. Toads do a lot of good in our gardens by eating slugs and flies and we need them.”

The aim is to have enough volunteers to keep up a nightly patrol especially in the area between the Alice Lisle and Poulner school.

The group has been praised by David Attenborough and Teresa has won an award for her work.

“The more volunteers we have to help save this vulnerable species the better,” she added.

Walkers take part in a Walking for Health stroll near Fordingbridge

Two new healthy walking groups have been launched in Ringwood They are part of the Walking for Health scheme, a partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support and The Ramblers, which offers over 3,000 walks each week across the UK. The groups are led by trained volunteer walk leaders, supported by the New Forest National Park Authority. Leaders are on hand to support and encourage all walkers, irrespective of their speed or ability, helping them to get active and stay healthy.

One group starts from Ringwood Medical Centre, The Close, Ringwood, at 1.30pm on the first and third Tuesday in the month.

A Poulner walk starts from Cornerways Medical Centre, Parkers Close, Ringwood, at 1.30pm on the second and fourth Wednesday in the month.

The majority of the routes will be on paved footpaths, but some short sections may cross soft or uneven ground, so suitable footwear is needed.

BAND COLLECTION The Ringwood and Burley Band had a busy time over Christmas completing six engagements in New Milton, Burley and Ringwood.

A collection of £154.11 was taken on Saturday 12 December while the band played carols and Christmas music outside the Meeting House in Ringwood.

MODIFYING HUMANS: where does genetics stop?

Prof Lord Robert Winston, Lighthouse, Poole Review by Liz Turner Entertaining and wonderfully thought provoking – not always experiences which go together.

But when Professor Lord Robert Winston took command of Lighthouse theatre stage he turned what could be seen as a rather academic subject into a fascinating insight into a world often restricted to scientists.

Finding a level that a lay audience will understand is not always easy but as a BAFTA award–winning television presenter, he knows how to embrace everyone from students to health professionals, to those just wanting to hear the latest views from the renowned scientist and fertility expert.

His enthusiasm was infectious. He showed us photos of the twins born after he started his work in embryology in order to help a young woman whose first child had died of a genetic disorder.

He looked at the history and misuse of genetics, including the

disturbing fact that the Nazis were not the first to carry out eugenics experiments.

The eugenics moment was strong in England and America in the early 1900s with the theory that poor people shouldn’t be allowed to breed strong in the States. A case in America was used as justification for Nazi experiments at the Nuremburg trials. Recently female prison inmates in California were sterilised for alleged altruistic reasons.

The human mind, he argued has changed exponentially over the last 400 years, since Shakespeare made his mark. The invention of the reflecting telescope, the steam engine, going to the moon – all within a relatively short time. Whilst genes have not changed, the human mind is developing more and more. Scientists can make even living organisms in a lab from the building blocks of life.

Being one of those people who loves going to Pilates classes but then can never remember what to do when I get home, I was delighted to read this book.

A quick glance showed that there were clear diagrams and instructions so I’d be able to enjoy Pilates without my teacher reminding me what to do.

But this book is far more than just instructions.

It explains why you are doing the exercises and which part of the body is benefitting something I found really useful.

Aimed at all levels from beginners to advanced and with clear guides to workouts for each level, this book is suitable for all.

While I’m not a beginner, it was useful to be reminded of some of the basics.

The ‘how to use this guide’ section is excellent and along with covering the basics, demystifies breathing techniques – something which has always confused me. There’s also a section on mindfulness and how this can help with Pilates and yoga.

Author Marie-Claire Prettyman, who is based in Southampton, argues that what you feel in Pilates and yoga is as important as what you do and to really reap the benefits, you have to do more than just execute some vaguely accurate moves. It’s about what you feel when doing the exercises and where your head is at the same time.

Having worked as a yoga and Pilates teacher for over 15 years, Marie-Claire recognised that not all poses were suitable for everyone, something I can relate to.

He argued that we live in an uncertain world because of technology and highlighted advances in genetic science including showing a film of a genetically enhanced super mouse, which was able to run for four hours.

He also threw out the question that if we can modify pigs organs to make them suitable for human transplant, why not modify humans giving then more intelligence, go faster, blond hair, blue eyes or taller? And if that is ever done and super humans are created, what value do we put on human life?

All in all, an immensely enjoyable evening with plenty of food for thought.

Book review by Liz Turner She predominantly worked with people who had injuries, were in pre- and post-surgery and had illnesses such as cancer and multiple sclerosis, and adjusted routines to suit people’s specific needs.

After years of experimenting, she has utilised Newton’s Third Law – for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction - to allow you to feel whatever you need to feel, not what instructors dictate you should be feeling.

Don’t panic – the book makes this easy to understand.

When talking about her motivation behind writing the book Marie-Claire explained: “I have always taught in this way. It’s different to the contrived nature in which I was taught -breathe in here, do this here, do that there...

“I wanted people to feel movement rather than execute it.”

And did this book work for me?

Yes. I found myself really thinking about how I was moving and being comfortable in how far I stretched. I did stop worrying about breathing and let my body just do what felt right. I can now understand why people get addicted to this type of exercise.

Throughout the last 25 years they have been trying to find out why it is that for so many it works so well.

There is definitely something restorative about being in the fresh air, and recent studies have shown that soil can act like an antidepressant.

The bacterium Mycobacterium vaccae, found naturally in soil, has been shown to activate brain neurons to stimulate serotonin production, which makes people feel more relaxed and happier. Perhaps this is why we so enjoy getting our hands dirty, and why kicking piles of dead leaves is so therapeutic.

We inhale these bacteria and they lift our mood.

Horticulture can evoke memories, sounds, aromas, sensations of touch and taste.

Plants provide endless fascination, constantly changing, enabling us to renew contact with ourselves and listen to the voice of the earth.

They offer something for everyone, whether familiar repetitive tasks or an opportunity for some satisfying hard work. Every plant we grow is an act of creation, an affirmation of hope.

Human beings depend on plants for survival, not only for food, but for every aspect of their lives, from building houses to reading and writing. The majority of medicines still come from plants, and the benefits of herbs are wellknown.

However, Cherry Tree also shows that ‘you need both people and plants, one without the other wouldn’t work.’ Once a person has started to feel safe with plants, they are ready to start feeling safe with some other people. Plants can be the first stage in a process of rehabilitation. Cherry Tree’s motto ‘Caring for People, Caring for Plants’ is so true – for many people one can lead to the other.

TRAIN TO WAREHAM DELAYED BY WRONG TYPE OF WHEELS The wheels have temporarily come off the ambitious project to link Swanage to Wareham by train.

The start of the passenger service has been delayed until next year because of problems in finding the right wheels for the diesel trains to be used on the line.

The historic project to restore and upgrade three miles of former Network Rail line, to link the main line at Wareham with Swanage Railway is almost complete and the trial service was due to start in June. However it has come off the rails because non-standard wheel sets on two ex-British Railways 1960s heritage diesel trains which are being restored need to be replaced so they can go on the main line.

Swanage Railway took on the lease of three miles of former Network Rail line from a mile west of Norden station to a quarter of a mile south of Worgret Junction near Wareham in September 2014 The restoration work has seen 1,200 wooden track sleepers replaced, half a mile of track laid, a quarter-mile-long embankment given a major upgrade, undergrowth and drainage cleared along six miles of embankments as well as the installation of a new set of track points at Furzebrook.

A new state-of-the-art level crossing has been installed on the access road to the Wytch Farm oil field and Norden station, a new siding laid and a new road-rail interchange built.

Community stalwarts praised

director Mark Woolley explained the problems with the wheels. He said: “Detailed technical examination has concluded that new non-standard axles and wheel bearings – known as wheel-sets – need to be manufactured by specialist contractors in the United States, South Africa and England. We estimate the completed trains will be tested and delivered to the Swanage Railway during the autumn.”

The Swanage Railway has been given a grant of £1.86 million from the Government’s Coastal Communities Fund to introduce the trial passenger train service from Swanage to the main line at Wareham. It is planned to run the service on 50 selected days during 2017 and 90 selected days during 2018.

Local heroes have been recognised with Community Awards at a ceremony held at East Dorset District Council offices in Furzehill.

Andrew Sill from Ferndown Upper School received the Young Community Hero award. He was nominated by the school for his role with Ferndown Leisure Centre as their ambassador for disabled activities. He promotes sporting activities for all types of disability, networks with schools informing them of any new projects, pilot schemes or activities, works as an instructor for walking football, arranges friendly matches and attends meetings to promote sports for the disabled. Andrew has cerebral palsy which has meant that he has to modify activities in order to play the sports he loves.

The Community Champion award went to Terry Holbert. She helped set up the Ferndown Community Association and the Barrington Centre where she is currently vice-president. She will become president in September and has been a very active volunteer since the building was constructed.

She is also a director of Raffles Cafe which is set up as the trading arm of the Ferndown Community Association, an active member of the Entertainments Committee and dedicates endless hours to volunteer work within the Barrington and with Phoenix Musical Society, where she is president.

The Business Supporting the Community award went to Teachers Building Society in Wimborne. They were nominated by Destination Education Group for the financial commitment and numerous volunteer hours they have given to help deliver the ‘My’ Life Programme to 10 local schools across Dorset.

There were also three special mentions in the Community Champion award category for Richard Nunn in recognition of his dedication to Wimborne Athletic Club and Wimborne in Bloom, Cecil Cooper in recognition of his dedication to Holt Village Hall and Dave and Angie Mills in recognition of their dedication to Corfe Mullen Carnival.

EDDC chairman Cllr Steve Lugg presented the awards and said: “I was very keen to have a civic event which celebrated the people in our community who do so much for other residents of East Dorset. The winners of the awards are justifiably being honoured for the work they do in their community and I am delighted to be celebrating their success here.”

He also presented awards to two pupils of Ferndown Upper School who submitted designs for his Christmas card. The winner was Amber Turner with Hollyann Stewart being the runner-up.

Entertainment was provided at the event by local country singer Amie Knight, while the guests of honour were Chris Chope MP and the High Sheriff of Dorset, Jennifer Coombs.

Fordingbridge Players The latest autumn production saw the players return to the Victoria Rooms in Fordingbridge for a new venture where theatregoers were able to watch three plays for the price of one – two short plays from the Deckchairs Series by Jean McConnell and The Monkey’s Paw, based on a short story by WW Jacobs.

Rehearsals are now well under way for the spring production of The Railway Children.

This adaption of the popular children’s story, directed by Sarah Farr and Kate Short, will be performed on Wednesday 17 February until Saturday 20 February at the Burgate School Drama Studio. The Fordingbridge Players are always happy to welcome new members: you don’t have to want to act as there are plenty of backstage and technical jobs that need to be done too.

Tree planted as growing reminder Chairman of East Dorset District Council, Cllr Steve Lugg, planted a tree to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. The tree, a locally-grown Acer Palmateum Suminagashi, is on the green near the junction of Martins Drive and Wimborne Road East in Ferndown. It was draped in black and yellow ribbons to denote ‘remembrance and hope’ intertwined. The planting ceremony was attended by the mayors of Christchurch, Verwood and Wimborne and the Chairman of Dorset County Council.

Cllr Lugg talked about the Holocaust Memorial Trust and read an extract from Anne Frank’s Diary as well as two poems.

EARL JACKSON A very successful rhythm workshop was run recently by the great Earl Jackson of “Chuck Berry” fame. A dozen delegates, all members of the New Forest Jazz Workshop, spent all day learning how to play with soul, timing and tight rhythm.

At the end of January the workshop had a distinctly ‘bluesy flavour’ that generated a really good sound. Two new members were welcomed.

Challenging times for local government Local government is facing some challenging times. This is a statement that could have been said about local councils at any time in the last 20 years. However, with an ageing population and diminishing grants from central government, the challenges facing councillors are enormous. New ways of working must be found whilst ensuring that local decision making and democracy is not diminished.

Balancing the books whilst maintaining services, providing housing but protecting the Green Belt – these are some of the decisions that make being a councillor very interesting. I have been a councillor since being elected on to Verwood Town Council in 2007 and East Dorset District Council in 2011.

Currently, I am ward member for Verwood East and sit on East Dorset Cabinet as the Portfolio Holder for Housing. Housing is an issue of growing public significance and is relevant to people of all ages and is perhaps the biggest challenge that district councils face in the coming years.

Finding a balance between our built and natural environment is of fundamental importance. We are fortunate to live in one of the most desirable parts of the country; desirable in part because of our beautiful countryside. Yet a housing crisis that locks many young people, who are born and bred in the area, out of any genuine chance of home ownership needs to be addressed urgently – the long term vitality of our community depends on it.

Community is at the heart of most things that are good in our area. It is what I find most appealing about living in Verwood. In all of the challenges that lie ahead, I hope that this is a source of strength that will come together to support good ideas and oppose ideas that will irreparably harm the community that we cherish.

The Mayor of Verwood, Cllr Sandra Grove, backed a winner when she organised a murder mystery fundraiser. The event held in the memorial hall on 16 January was so popular it sold 98 tickets and there was a waiting list.

Performed by 10 ladies of the Townswomen’s Guild acting as characters of the Manor, the mayor said, “They created much laughter and fun with all their flair and enthusiasm. The audience participation was absolutely superb with only a couple of people guessing the murderer. There was a three course meal which was served between the acts and a raffle held to complete the evening.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped to make this such a special evening.”

The event raised £929 for the mayor’s charities: the Heathland Heritage Trust and the Dorset Search Dogs.

Verwood Afternoon TG The guild celebrated its 35th birthday with a delicious meal at Verwood’s Crane Valley Golf Club. Everyone enjoyed the food, excellent service and the view over the golf course - even the sun shone! President of Dorset Federation, Val Barker, was a guest and the five previous chairmen, going back 15 years, were also present.

Member Brenda Slade was warmly congratulated on being awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list, for her hard work over many years at Westminster Abbey, repairing and preserving the ceremonial robes.

Captains - present and future Verwood’s Crane Valley Golf Club has announced the appointment of Stewart Rennie as captain of the club’s thriving, 220-strong seniors’ section. Former Poulner Primary head teacher Roger Bonfield takes the vice captain’s chair in preparation for assuming the captaincy next year.

Speaking of his appointment, Stewart said: “I am looking forward to widening the appeal of golf and to welcoming new members, not least to join the nearly 30 that have already switched from the Canford Magna club that unfortunately closes at the end of March. I also aim that ‘A smile for a child’, my nominated charity, benefits to the tune of a least the £700 the outgoing captain was able to donate to Julia’s House for his year.”

Top brass youth players A Verwood brass band made up entirely of young players has good reason to blow its own trumpet.

Verwood Concert Brass not only won a host of awards, but was also crowned best overall band in the Wessex Brass Band Association Youth and Training Band contest held at Trafalgar School in Downton, Wiltshire on 30 January.

Made up of 21 players and under the baton of Mike Dunnings, the Verwood Youth Band won the cup for the best youth band as well as for the best overall band across both the youth and training band sections. It also won a further cup for playing the best hymn tune.

The Verwood Youth Ensemble, which consisted of nine players conducted

by Lloyd Bartlett, was awarded 2nd place in its section, with Jack Musslewhite winning a bronze certificate for his percussion playing and Oliver Bartlett, age 6, getting the cup for being the youngest player on the day.

Trophies were presented by contest adjudicator, Captain Sam Hairsine of the Royal Marines Band Service.

Chairman of Verwood Concert Brass, Helen Dunnings said, “It was a great day seeing and hearing all of the young players from all of the competing bands perform some wonderful music on the contest stage. I, and all involved with Verwood Concert Brass, were of course particularly proud of what our younger players achieved and the awards they won and it is so pleasing that as an organisation we can do our bit to nurture another generation of brass band players.”

Children In Need Variety Show to be dedicated to Sir Terry A variety show, set to take place at the Hub in Verwood on Friday 18 November 2016, when Pudsey Bear will be putting in an appearance, will be dedicated to the memory of Children in Need stalwart Sir Terry Wogan.

The veteran broadcasting legend died after a short battle with cancer aged 77 on 31 January 2016.

At the centre of Children in Need since its beginning, Sir Terry had inspired millions of people to raise hundreds of millions of life-changing pounds.

BBC director-general Tony Hall paid tribute to Sir Terry saying he was “truly a national treasure.” Known for his wit and geniality, he featured on our screens and airwaves for 50 years and leaves a remarkable legacy.

Warren Brown, organiser of the Verwood Children in Need Variety Show said, “There will be a picture of Sir Terry on the screen during the show, which will be dedicated to his memory and to the work he did for Children in Need.”

Still in the planning stages, the variety show will include Wessex International Majorettes, Swish of the Curtain, singers Evelyn Walsh and Catherine Gray, Yetminster Irish Dancers, piano man Matt Black and much more.

AT FERNDOWN UPPER SCHOOL EXCLUSIVE REPORT

The Cherries made history last year when they were promoted into the Premier League On 27 January 2016, three Adam Federici AFC Bournemouth first team players gave a frank interview at Ferndown Upper School when PE teacher, Ryan Ellis led the questions.

Students discovered that goalie Adam Federici started playing football aged eight, but didn’t play in goal until he was 14. He left home aged 16.

Midfielders Dan Gosling and Eunan O’Kane said they gave up a lot of friend time when they were younger to concentrate on football. “There were countless times that I stayed in when my friends were doing stuff. It was hard,” said Gosling who was scouted at the age of 11 for a professional team.

O’Kane came from a sporting background and started playing football aged 11. By Eunan the time he was 13, O’Kane he was focused on having a career in the sport.

Q. Was it the same feeling as saving a penalty?

Federici: It’s different. When you make a save in a game, the people you play with expect saves.

You expect it of yourself. So there’s not really that much emotion attached to it. When you go up the other end and score the equalizing goal it’s a very important point. When I’m up the other end it’s a completely different feeling.

Q. Is the set up from the Championship to Premier League different?

Gosling: There’s a big difference. Last year we would get 7-8 chances a game. This year we might get 3 or 4, maybe only one good one. Other teams are more experienced than us at this level whereas last year we were arguably the best side in the league. We’ve slowly found our feet and once we get a bit more experience and a bit more consistency in the game we’ll get better results.

Q. What is it like at half time?

Gosling: We get two to three minutes to ourselves, and the coaching staff will go into a separate room.

They’ll come in with notes and go through them and say what we have to do to improve tactically.

It goes pretty quickly. We get rehydrated.

Q. What’s the best advice you have received?

Federici: If you take care of football, football will take care of you. This has stood me in good stead.

Q. What is a typical day at the training ground like?

O’Kane: We have to reach the training ground by 9.45am at the latest. Most arrive around 9am because we get breakfast there. We all start to train at 10.30am when we maybe have a presentation.

It could be about nutrition or sleep. Then we have a prehab session, for instance on ankle stability or knee stability. After that we go outside and train for one to two hours. When training finishes we can leave or hang around and recover and have lunch or go to the gym. We usually leave around 1.30 to 2pm.

STUDENTS QUESTIONS: Did you get any GCSEs? Gosling: I didn’t enjoy school. My GCSE results weren’t great. At the time my Mum wasn’t too pleased. I tried my best.

O’Kane: I passed 10 GCSEs and an A Level and have a BTEC. Will Portsmouth be tough?

Gosling: Yes, it will be very tough. They will all be 110% and go into every tackle and make it really hard for us. These games are more difficult than people imagine.

(Not played at the time of the question, but the Cherries went on to win this away game 1-2).

Q. What kind of feedback do you get from the pre and post match stats boards?

Gosling: These go up every Monday. We all look at the information. It’s good to see how many passes you made in the game, aerial challenges, ground challenges, distance covered. The computer guys cut your clips out so you can just watch solely what you’ve done in the game and you can work on what you need to. Stats are good. I think the game is going more and more that way. Certain clubs only scout and buy players on stats alone.

In appreciation of the footballers’ visit, Year 12 Student Tom North told MAGS4DORSET: “It’s really exciting to see professionals giving back to the school and motivating us to achieve.

It’s good to be here, looking up to the stage and thinking we are where they were a few years ago.

They have given us something to aspire to, to get us in the hunter mode so we can go out and achieve. It’s nice that they have taken the time to come to our school when they’ve got so many other things to do.”

Q. Do you find out something new about yourself? [In the stats room] O’Kane: You might come away from a game and your immediate reaction is that you’ve played well, but when you go in the stats room you might think, I’ll get a warm ear from the manager in a minute.

It can be a little bit of a reality check. It can also be a room where after having a conversation with the manager you can go in and agree with what he’s said. Importantly it’s there for us to improve.

Q. Is preparation for the Premier League different to the Championship?

Gosling: We are doing more work on the training ground. It’s probably been harder on the body. The training gets recorded. You can’t hide. The coaches will look back and if you’re not at it, they see everything. It’s good to be a part of that.

Q. Adam, have you ever scored a goal?

Federici: I scored at a game in Cardiff and in a ‘friendly’.

nd though he now knows where his future lies, it wasn’t always that way.

Sam, aged 24, from Wimborne didn’t grow up with a camera in his hand learning about f-stops, instead, he was generally be found in the great outdoors discovering the world around him.

“I was fascinated by it,” he explains and growing up at Stewarts Garden Centre, which is owned by his family, meant there was plenty of opportunity to get up close to the natural world.

“As a child, I spent as much time as I possibly could with a man called Jim Brown. He taught me about wildlife, birds and trees. He was the first person to introduce me to the importance of the environment.”

Jim was a constant source of information. He worked for Stewarts from the age of 14 until he was in his 80s and was always willing to share his knowledge. Sam absorbed it with enthusiasm.

But Sam’s fascination with what lurked underneath the paving slabs didn’t help him excel academically,

“

I like to illustrate the beauty of nature and show how it develops with each part of evolution being necessary and when it came to choosing a university, he floundered. By now, he owned a digital camera and scoured the Internet for a suitable course.

It was Marine and Natural History Photography that sprang out at him.

“As soon as I read the details, I knew it was what I wanted to do,” he said.

Sam graduated from Falmouth University in 2012.

“The course gave me the building blocks of my career,” explained Sam. “My third year project was to study grey seals and I filmed them in Cornwall. I went repeatedly to the same place to get footage and it was during this project that I saw a BBC tweet asking for ideas for a series they were planning. I got in touch and suggested grey seals. Within three days, the BBC was filming and I was assisting.”

He admits he was at the bottom of the ladder helping move equipment around, rather than shooting footage, but it gave him the contact and credibility with the producers who were open to other suggestions. Sam was able to be involved with a range

of his ideas for television including filming robins and nightjars.

He also worked with British television presenter and cameraman Simon King for 18 months helping to set up the Wild Meadows project on a 10 acre piece of land. Sam helped to convert the area into a habitat now richly populated with wildlife. A lake was created and nest boxes made and installed along with live cams. These now follow the activity of harvest mice, kingfishers, badgers and foxes among other creatures. “I’m fascinated by stories that involve people. People are part of the environment,” he says, showing me a folder of exceptional images on his laptop of tribal village life as well as lions, elephants and wildebeest.

With a huge library of still photography and files of moving film, it’s easy to assume Sam’s making a

good living out of what he does, but that’s not quite true.

“It’s a struggle,” he admits. “But I can see it as my future as long as I keep working as hard as I possibly can.”

A fulfilling part of his job is the talks he gives to schools, camera clubs and universities.

It would be a complete bonus.”

He knows this already because he’s been involved with the making of an Austrian series with EMMY and BAFTA award-winning photographer and filmmaker Ian McCarthy about blue sharks.

images by using camera traps, but the most elusive photograph of all is that of a family of foxes playing in a bluebell wood in Dorset.

“I’ve been there two years running and last spring I sat for about 50 hours and didn’t get the picture I wanted,” he says without a hint of resignation because giving up is not in his nature and this year he intends to go back and try again.

Yet he doesn’t like to be called passionate about his work. He sums it up in another way: “The bigger the

challenge, the greater the reward. And I love a challenge.”

Then I think of him sitting in a river, dressed in camouflage waiting for a kingfisher to land on his head so he can photograph it and I decide he’s either passionate about what he does, or slightly bonkers.

A full house literally bristled with excitement before the curtain went up for Swan Lake performed by the Moscow City Ballet.

The age-old love story tells the tale of Prince Siegried who falls in love with the beautiful Odette. He vows to be faithful, but evil Von Rothbart and Odile trick the prince into thinking Odile is Odette, and his love is seemingly fated.

Set to Tchaikovsky’s score, this flawless production held the audience transfixed.

Lavish costumes set the opening scene and the jester gave an outstanding performance bringing multi strands of colour and humour to the stage. So agile, he flew rather than leapt and landed cat-like without a sound. His comic encounters with the ladies and delicate actions held everyone spellbound.

Parley Rotary Club member Paul Reade (56) counts himself lucky that he attended the ‘clinic’ run last year. Not only was he diagnosed early, he’s already had treatment. So, instead of allowing cancer to get a grip, he now has a six monthly blood check to confirm that he remains clear.

As Paul will tell you, the check is a simple pinprick on the finger, an on-the-spot analysis of the resulting blood droplet and confidential feedback, all within 15 minutes. “My check came up amber, I was advised to visit my GP for a full test... and the rest is history,” he says.

Voluntary donations of up to £10 will be accepted to help recover ’medical’ costs.

The other dancers, each demonstrating perfect artistry, gave elegant, and fluid performances, but not with the same sort of lustre.

The treasured swan scenes were mesmerisingly choreographed. Steeped in their own magical atmosphere they flowed with grace and beauty before Odette, queen of the swans, owned the stage drawing the audience into her stunning and somewhat dizzying performances. The prince with his ‘queen’ danced flawlessly to produce some outstanding lifts and stunning poses. And the timing of the ballerinas in the dance of cygnets was impeccable.

rom 1 April there will be a new market in Pennys Walk, Ferndown. It will offer all sorts of produce, flowers, fashion, meat, crafts and gifts.

The long awaited weekly market has been made possible following years of negotiations by Ferndown Chamber of Commerce.

“The Chamber has been working on this project with the aim of enhancing the town’s profile and attracting visitors from other areas as well as improving the shopping experience for its residents,” said chamber president James Edgar.

“In recent months, we have teamed up with Ferndown Town Council who have worked closely with us to help make this huge opportunity a reality.”

The Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Julie Robinson said, “A regular market in the town is what residents, shops and businesses have been asking for, and this will help improve the footfall in the town. It’s a positive step forward and many thanks to Ferndown Chamber of Commerce for their involvement with this.”

James added, “As this will bring more visitors to the town, it is a great time for Ferndown businesses to grab the chance with both hands to introduce new customers to their stores and businesses.”

Hook, line and sea bass Hook and line sea bass fishermen in Weymouth and Portland will be able to continue fishing after a local MEP won a concession from the EU Council.

Sea and line fishermen from Dorset had complained that EU plans to conserve stocks should only apply to boats using nets as their traditional method of fishing was not adding to the problem of over-fishing. Their case was taken up by Dorset MEP Ashley Fox. The fisheries minister in a letter to Mr Fox has confirmed ‘fishing vessels using hooks and lines, and fixed gillnets may fish for sea bass and retain on board, relocate, tranship or land sea bass caught in that area not exceeding 1300 kilograms per vessel per month.’ The original plan had been to stop the fishing for sea bass altogether for several months.

Mr Fox said, “The fishermen’s argument was hard to fault and I am delighted that they can continue landing their catch. I would also like to thank the minister, George Eustace, for taking up their case with other EU governments.”

Mr Eustace added, “The UK government is always keen to listen when these complex matters are debated and I would like to thank Ashley for alerting me to the views of the hook and line fishermen.”

The New Forest’s first Digi Arc weekend proved hugely popular, with hundreds of children and their families joining experts for a weekend of gaming and archaeology.

More than 800 people attended the event to discover how researchers have used cutting edge technologies to bring the forgotten history of the New Forest to life.

The weekend was organised by the New Forest National Park Authority and held at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst. Visitors tried their hand at a range of activities: including exploring virtual reconstructions of archaeological sites, experiencing virtual reality through Oculus Rift goggles and through their phone with Google Cardboard, viewing 3D models of shipwrecks and creating their own Minecraft archaeological models and having them judged. Diana Edwin who visited the event with her son Xander, said: “My 10-year-old really loved seeing all the laser mapping images and the local landmarks created in Minecraft. He has been inspired to look online at the laser mapping images for our favourite walks in the Forest and create some more historical buildings in Minecraft, possibly starting with our house.”

Funding boost for ‘Poppy Pod’ village The ‘Poppy Pod’ camping village for Armed Forces personnel and their families at Hampshire County Council’s Tile Barn Outdoor Centre in the New Forest has received a funding boost.

Twenty wooden pods have already been built as free holiday and respite facilities for service personnel, veterans and their families, thanks to £250,000 from the Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant scheme, one of their highest financial grants to date.

Now, a £50,000 donation from the Brockenhurst branch of the Royal British Legion will be used to build a communal hub building for visitors to the site, where injured Indian and New Zealand troops were treated during the First World War. The 20 solar-powered, accessible pods and hub building will be available at a charge for schools and the public, when bookings begin from Easter. However, priority will be given to members of the armed services and their families on weekends and during holidays, who enjoy the facilities for free.

Asif Kapadia is to direct the Martin Scorsese/ Anthony Haas produced feature film drama Silver Ghost. The project will be a co-production between Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions and Zuma Productions.

Developed by the late Academy Award winning director Richard Attenborough and producer Anthony Haas, Silver Ghost tells the epic story of the iconic motor car, born out of an extraordinary odd-couple relationship between the maverick genius of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, marking the genesis of aviation and all the courage and daredevilry that went with it.

Set at the turn of the last century, it delineates the fascinating story of Rolls and Royce and their close friendship with motoring pioneer Lord John Douglas-Scott Montagu, his relationship with his beautiful wife, Cis, and his secret affair with his secretary and mistress, Eleanor Velasco Thornton. Keep your car safe from thieves Dorset Police has recently had reports of crimes involving vehicles and wants to remind everyone of precautions that can be taken to secure their belongings. It can take as little as 10 seconds for a thief to steal something from your car and the best way to protect your belongings is to lock it whenever you leave it. This may sound like stating the obvious, but in recent months at least two vehicles have been stolen from drives in the area. One in Wimborne, when the owner had left the keys in the ignition to defrost the vehicle and the other in Ferndown, whilst the owners were loading their vehicle.

Where you park can make a big difference to the safety of your car and your belongings.

Look out for car parks approved by the police Safer Parking scheme. You can find these by looking for their distinctive ‘Park Mark’ signs.

When parking at home, be aware that thieves sometimes break into houses looking for car keys. They will even use wires and hooks ‘to try and drag’ your keys through the letterbox, so keep your keys out of sight, away from doors and windows.

Have your vehicle’s windows etched with its registration number or the last seven digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN). This can put criminals off, as it makes your car more difficult to sell. It also makes it easier for police to get your car back to you if it is stolen.

Violent thug behind bars

‘Woodhenge’ reprieved Planners have recommended the granting of permission for a wooden sculpture of Stonehenge built in Worth Matravers.

The structure, built by Charlie Newman, the pub landlord of the Square and Compass, in time for the summer solstice in June 2015, did not originally have planning permission and Purbeck District Council gave him until 4 September last year to remove it. But following an online petition which attracted hundreds of signatures, and the submission by Mr Newman of a retrospective planning application for the structure, planners have recommended granting permission for a temporary two year period, subject to conditions.

A man given a 20 month prison sentence in November 2015, but who failed to appear in court at the time, was arrested in Christchurch on 17 January.

Alex Williams (22) from Christchurch was convicted for violent disorder. At the time of sentencing, four other men were jailed for their part in ammonia attacks in Dorset that left two men permanently blinded in one eye.

Reece Watkins, 22, Joe Warne, 21, Dominic Barker, 20, Piers Fox-Havilland, 19 all from the London area, and Alex Williams, 22, from Christchurch, were convicted following trial at Bournemouth Crown Court and sentenced on 24 WILLIAMS November 2015.

Warne was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison, Watkins sentenced to 18 years, Barker to 16 years, Fox-Havilland to 12 years and Williams, who failed to appear received 20 months in prison.

Following his recent arrest, Williams appeared in court on 18 January when he was given his sentence along with a further two months for failing to appear in court in November.

ASK THE EXPERT Q. I’m what you might call a first-time seller.

Can you give me some general tips on how to go about it, with a view to hopefully minimising the stress involved?

A. Choosing the right agent is the best place

to start. Don’t simply go for the one who values your home highest (they’re just trying to buy your business), or the one who quotes the lowest fees (in estate agency, as in most things, cheap rarely equals good value for money).

Basically, you want an agent who really knows the local market and will give you reliable, professional advice and quality personal service at all times. Personal recommendation is always preferable, but failing that, your best bet is to go for a well-established, owner-operated local agent – one whose whole business depends on delivering quality service, rather than hitting arbitrary targets set by “head office.” If you really want to keep stress levels to the minimum, then it also helps to choose an agent who can offer a complete and comprehensive service, including things like conveyancing.

Your asking price is obviously hugely important in determining how quickly and smoothly your sale proceeds. You naturally want the highest possible price, yet at the same time you don’t want to scare away the buyers, which you will do if you ask too much. In reality, there’s a lot more involved in pricing than simply looking in other agents’

windows and online as quite often the advertised price can differ from the actual sale price. If you are talking to an agent that is very active in your area then they should be able to provide you with numerous examples of other homes, similar to yours, that they have recently sold. These comparables of other sold properties and the sold prices that were achieved are the only way for them to justify the price they are advising you to commence marketing your home at.

Next, you yourself can make a big difference by ensuring that your home is presented in the best and most saleable condition. A neat garden; fresh paintwork inside and out, clean and tidy rooms, sparkling windows and no clutter will enhance the saleability of your home.

Once your home is nice and tidy, make sure that the agent you choose takes nice photos.

Many agents are now trying to up their fees, or obtain an upfront fee, by selling you professional photography. My view is that taking good photos is a fundamental part of being able to provide a good property marketing service. Photography is so important these days that the best agents will have been professionally trained and will have invested in the very latest photographic technology in order for

Those that are not up to the job should employ a photographer of their own that is capable but as an inclusive part of their service and not for an upfront fee.

Finally, I would strongly recommend that you take the time to gather together any planning consents, building regulation approvals for work you may have had done on the property, certificates and or service reports for boilers etc.
