Dear Readers!

I will never forget the day I walked into the office at my previous magazine and found that my typewriter had been replaced by a computer — yes, I have been a news editor for a long time.

After the initial fear that, if I pressed the wrong key, I would wipe out the entire contents of the current edition, I soon realised that my life would be so much easier. I had always been a fast typist but, to misquote comedian Eric Morecambe, “I am typing all the right letters, but not necessarily on the right keys.”

With a computer, my working life is so much easier.

I consider myself reasonably tech-savvy, so when I bought a new digital radio, I was sure it would be easy to tune it in to my favourite stations.

Not so.

The instructions included diagrams with words in very small type.

I know I’m not alone in complaining about the type on instructions.

Very often, labels on food — and it is important to read them for cooking instructions or to determine how processed they are — are in colours on a background of a similar hue, making them difficult to read.

Similarly, I’m not sure how we all managed to drive our cars safely before manufacturers decided to put in a plethora of warning lights. When an orange light flashed up on my dashboard on a journey back from Dorchester, I went into panic mode but decided to carry on until I got home. Then all I had to do was consult the 800-page handbook to identify the symbol!

Sometimes progress is a mixed blessing.

Right, moans over — please enjoy reading this edition of Viewpoint Magazine, which includes an article on page 12 about how we can recycle so many items.

A New Forest District councillor is unhappy about the naming of authorities when local government reorganisation takes place in 2028.

Under the plans, New Forest District Council (NFDC) will be abolished and the New Forest split between two new unitary authorities, with Ringwood and Fordingbridge set to be included in the new Mid Hampshire Council.

But NFDC Cllr John Haywood, who represents Ringwood North and Ellingham, feels that it should be called New Forest and Mid Hampshire.

NFDC has also received a petition from New Forest Together, which is campaigning to protect the identity of the New Forest.

The group has voted unanimously to support the council exploring legal options to challenge the government’s reorganisation decision.

Cllr Haywood is also calling for the South West Hampshire unitary council — which covers the Southampton and Eastleigh areas — to use the name New Forest for all area committees and internal functions that relate to the New Forest District.

In 2028, five unitary councils will replace the current 15 county, district, borough and unitary councils that serve Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, according to plans announced by the government on Wednesday 25 March.

Cllr Haywood said: “Even though New Forest District Council is consulting on its legal options, we know that plans for the new unitaries are moving ahead now. So it’s really important that we embed the New Forest name as deeply in the new authorities as possible — including in the name of the Mid Hampshire unitary council.”

Crime rates fall in Dorset The latest statistics show overall crime fell once again in Dorset in 2025.

The area continues to be one of the safest counties in England.

The Office for National Statistics released data on Thursday 23 April 2026, which confirmed that overall crime fell in Dorset by 9.2 per cent between 1 January and 31 December 2025, against a national decrease of 1.9 per cent.

Stalking and harassment reports fell by 6.5 per cent against a national increase of 3.1 per cent, while victimbased crime fell by 8.9 per cent. There was a 7.2 per cent reduction in violence against a person and a 12.6 per cent drop where violence against a person resulted in injury.

Unfortunately, sexual offences rose 3.3 per cent (below the national average increase of 5.2 per cent), while robbery offences increased 8.9 per cent, in line with the national crime rate.

Rachel Farrell said: “These crimes are abhorrent, and we take all reports extremely seriously and will do all we can to ensure victims are supported, offences are thoroughly investigated and offenders are brought to justice. We will continue to work closely with our partners in transforming the way we respond to and investigate these offences, as well as improving the criminal justice journey for victims.

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: “I am delighted Dorset has improved to fourth safest place in the country. To see the relentless hard work and progress the Force is making in cutting crime, keeping people safe and bringing perpetrators to justice reflected in this result is tremendous.

“Alongside this improvement in ranking, Dorset has also seen the highest reduction in crime across all Forces, a testament to the determination and tenacity of officers, staff and volunteers. Dorset is a safer place because of their efforts.”

Residents concerned over allotment fires

Pedal car race cancelled Ringwood’s popular annual pedal car race was due to take place on Sunday 24 May, but the organisers unfortunately had to cancel with five weeks’ notice.

The British Pedal Car Grand Prix sees home-made pedal cars race around the streets of Ringwood, entertaining crowds and raising money for charity.

But on Monday 13 April, the race organisers announced the sad news that this year’s race must be postponed.

Ringwood & District Round Table made the decision due to “an unavoidable change to the event’s traditional date”.

The event normally takes place on the second Sunday in July, but this year it was asked to move to the earlier date in May. This is because Ringwood Town Council is organising an event on Sunday 12 July to mark the 800th anniversary of

the town’s Royal Market Charter.

The organisers said: “While every effort was made to adapt, the revised schedule significantly impacted team availability.

“As a result, and due to a lack of entries for the new date, organisers have taken the difficult decision to postpone the 2026 event until next summer.”

Craig Adams, chairman of the event team, added: “This hasn’t been an easy decision. The Pedal Car Grand Prix is a highlight of the year for so many people in our community, but the change of date meant that many of our regular teams were unable to take part. Without the strong turnout the event deserves, we felt it was best to pause for this year.”

The race is set to return in 2027.

A number of Ringwood residents, some from Kestrel Court, attended Ringwood Town Council’s Recreation, Leisure and Open Spaces Committee meeting to express concerns about a recent incident at the Southampton Road allotments.

They had witnessed wood being burnt, not green waste, and this had created fumes and smoke which carried towards their houses.

The residents said they felt very strongly that there should be measures in place to stop this happening again.

From an environmental perspective, they felt there should be a move away from burning and polluting and alternative solutions should be looked at.

The committee agreed that even controlled burns should not be allowed on the Southampton Road site due to its proximity to residential areas. There would be no change in respect of Upper Kingston (where fires are allowed, subject to conditions) or Crow Arch Lane (where fires are not permitted).

In April 2024, the committee had formalised a ban on bonfires at Southampton Road, Hightown Road and Crow Arch Lane, but deferred a decision on incinerators, fire pits and barbecues.

Can you support your local food bank?

What do you do if you open the fridge or kitchen cupboard and find you have nothing to eat? A quick trip to the supermarket, place an emergency online food order, get a takeaway delivery, or do you just shrug your shoulders and go without?

For many people, finding nothing in the cupboard isn’t an unusual occurrence; it’s the reality of not having enough money to pay all the bills, keep a roof over their heads and put food on the table every day.

Food banks across the country, including here in Ringwood, see clients in this situation every day. We are here to help people in that moment of food crisis. We also actively work with clients to resolve their financial problems and, eventually, remove the need to access emergency food.

Until then, the need continues, and we would not be able to do what we do without the constant support of our local community.

Georgia’s story Local resident Georgia Chappels revealed how Ringwood Foodbank has helped her.

“My marriage ended a few years ago after 16 years together. Our children ranged from age 16 down to two, and I was working part-time at a hairdresser’s.

Overnight, my life changed from stable and secure to the reality of being completely on my own, responsible for my children and not knowing how to cope.

“I didn’t tell anyone at first and put my head down and tried to struggle on.

Luckily for me, I attended a local church playgroup with my toddler, and they could tell something was up. One of them asked me whether I had food, and I had to admit my kids had eaten toast for dinner the night before. For the next six weeks, Ringwood

“With support from my friends, my boss, the food bank and other local agencies, I attended college and qualified as a hairdresser in one year. Times were still hard, and the food bank continued to support me. I wouldn’t have been able to feed my kids, go to college or function without the help of Ringwood Foodbank.”

Georgia set up Community Haircuts in September 2025 and now runs sessions offering free treatments across the area to anyone who cannot afford a haircut.

She has been nominated for a BBC Solent Make a Difference Award.

Let your voice soar in Fordingbridge Both experienced and amateur singers are invited to take part in a day-long singing workshop this June.

The workshop has been organised by Fordingbridge Choral Society and will be led by the conductor and soprano Suzzie Vango.

Society member Colin Burt said: “Suzzie Vango is attending to teach or enhance our singing techniques, as well as things

like posture and breathing, and hopefully give us all greater pleasure in performing. She is renowned in the world of music and her enthusiasm and dedication to achieving the best out of wonderful music is second to none.”

Attendees will sing excerpts from Mozart’s ‘Requiem’, and at the end of the afternoon around 3.15pm, the class will sing a run through of the ‘Requiem’.

People wishing to listen to that are welcome and it will be free.

The workshop takes place from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 13 June at the Victoria Rooms in Bridge Street, Fordingbridge.

By Louisa Hiscock, Verwood Rotary Club May is a busy month for club members. As I write, our second Race Night in early May is still to come and I look forward to reporting back next time on what promises to be a great event.

We are also looking forward to the next Rustic Fayre on Monday 31 August (the bank holiday) and are already well underway with planning for this popular community event at Potterne Park.

Please make a note in your diary and look out for more details coming soon, including new attractions planned for this year.

As a club, we are committed to supporting our local community, but did you know we are also part of Rotary International? This is a global network with over 1.2 million members as part of 35,000 clubs in more than 200 countries.

Rotary International supports projects that address critical needs such as clean water, sanitation, healthcare, education and disaster relief around the world. Through financial aid, technical expertise and hands-on support, we can be part of something much bigger to make a difference.

It is Rotary International that pioneered the ongoing campaign to End Polio Now, which has immunised over three billion children in 122 countries and reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 per cent. The campaign is now at a critical stage having come so far and Rotary International remains determined to finish the job, despite the risk of government funding being withdrawn. There have been celebrations amongst Verwood’s musical community following an extraordinary weekend on 14–15 March after both of the town’s competition brass bands achieved landmark results at the West of England Regional Finals — some of the most significant in the town’s 162-year banding history.

Verwood Concert Brass delivered a stunning performance in the Championship Section, earning third place and qualifying for the National Brass Band Championships at London’s Royal Albert Hall this October. It marks the first time in the band’s entire history that they have reached the finals at this level.

Meanwhile, Verwood Town Band secured second place in the Second Section, qualifying for the National Finals in York this September. This is the band’s fourth consecutive year reaching the finals, and their success also earns them promotion to the First Section, completing a rise that many bands spend decades striving for.

Verwood supports four bands: Concert Brass, Town Band, Community Band, and a Training Band.

At the centre of this progress is Musical Director Kevin Smith, whose guidance has shaped both contesting bands over many years. His leadership has taken the Town Band from the Fourth Section to the First.

Chairman Helen Dunnings said: “What our bands have accomplished this weekend is nothing short of historic. It reflects years of dedication from players, volunteers, and our whole community. Verwood has proved that a town with heart, ambition and teamwork can achieve something truly extraordinary.”

Award for 200-year-old cottage

Rose Cottage in Frogham, which is not far from Fordingbridge, was named as Best Conservation Project in the New Forest National Park Authority Building Design Awards 2025 in March.

Having stood empty for several years, this Grade II listed thatched cottage had fallen into disrepair. Originally built of clay cob more than 200 years ago, the building had incompatible cement render and little structural support.

After consulting with the NPA’s heritage conservation team, the owner restored the home using traditional materials and techniques, preserving the building’s historic and architectural character. A single-storey lean-to extension was sympathetically rebuilt, with Rose of Jericho tallow limewash matched to the cottage’s original colour.

Why your rubbish might be someone else’s treasure

By Marilyn Barber | newseditor@dorsetview.co.uk Many people may not realise that the everyday items we discard, such as biscuit wrappers, milk bottle tops, Pringles tubes and ink cartridges, can not only be recycled, they can also raise funds for charities — and so far, 30 good causes have become beneficiaries of a local initiative.

Dorset charity Win on Waste is urging people to collect a variety of items and take them to their nearest recycling centre.

Win on Waste started life as Ideas2Action on 31 October 2013, and it now has five trustees, 67 volunteers and one part-time member of staff.

The first project launched in 2014 was Win on Waste at Canford Heath.

President Monique Monroe said: “Following on from that, we expanded our ‘We Need That’ recycling directory into Bournemouth. Since then, we have gradually increased our project portfolio, so we now have 16 monthly Win on Waste sessions across Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole,

Corfe Mullen and Wimborne, and a drop-off point at Holton Lee.” Other drop-off points include Kinson Library, Merley and Lychett Matravers.

One example of innovative recycling schemes the charity supports is sending ring pulls from cans to the Philippines, where local people turn them into jewellery and purses.

Meanwhile, Christmas cracker novelties, incomplete jigsaw puzzles and corks go to Dorset Scrapstore.

Stamps are sent to Bone Cancer Research, while unwanted or unloved bras are given to Against Breast Cancer, which is able to recover the textiles and raise funds for life-saving research.

But it isn’t just a case of recycling things we would normally put in our waste bins; Win on Waste can help people in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and Dorset to re-home tricky, hard-to-recycle items.

directories: ‘Stop We Need That!’ and ‘Decluttering? We Need That!’

Collections take place in Broadstone, Merley, Wimborne, Hamworthy, Upper Parkstone, Corfe Mullen, Southbourne, Poole, Oakdale and Kinson. A total of 63kg of waste was collected in Broadstone in January.

“Merley and Corfe Mullen seem to be the most popular,” said Monique.

Some collections take place monthly, others quarterly. For instance, the next two collections at The Spire in Poole are on Saturday 16 May and Saturday 20 June from 10.30am to 12noon.

Monique said that, to celebrate David Attenborough’s 100th birthday on 8 May, the charity would challenge people to bring in 100 items as a tribute to him.

Fire warning for Dorset and Wiltshire Community cooking at Poole Waste Not Want Not

Poverty fund launched With the current rise in the cost of living and the prediction that higher prices could last for eight months after the ending of the war in the Middle East, a fund to support people with low incomes to overcome poverty is much needed.

Dorset Community Foundation and BCP Council have launched the £425,000 BCP Crisis and Resilience Fund. This replaces the BCP Food and Energy Support Fund, which ran for almost five years and awarded more than 300 grants totalling over £1.7m to 78 different groups.

The emphasis will be less on food parcels but more on community meals, cookery workshops, school holiday activities for low income families, providing spaces and activities that bring people together and advice such as budget planning and money management, energy efficiency and other preventative and resilience support that help prevent crises.

The fund will offer one year grants of up to £7,500 and also grants of up to £15,000 a year until 2029.

The deadline for applications is 4 June and all projects must be completed by the end of March 2029.

Ringwood to celebrate 800th anniversary

With the hot, dry weather of summer upon us, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents and visitors to be cautious on or near heathland.

In April, the service issued an Amber alert, which means that, should a wildfire be experienced, it could spread quickly and easily.

There have already been multiple heathland fires in the Dorset area this year, affecting several hectares, which were believed to have been started deliberately.

Group Manager Graham Kewley said: “While the dry, warm weather is very welcome, it does mean the ground and foliage are dry, leading to a greater risk of fire spreading if something happens to cause ignition.

“We would urge anyone going out and about in our beautiful countryside to take extra care and be vigilant, follow our advice to #BringAPicnicNotABarbecue, and avoid having campfires on heathland or in woodlands.”

The service has issued this advice to anyone living near heathland: • Repair or replace any loose or broken tiles to prevent embers from entering your roof space.

• Regularly clear out ember traps around your home, such as gutters and roof valleys where dead leaves tend to accumulate.

• Check for any gaps in the soffits or cladding around your roof area and cover them with wire mesh. This allows for ventilation while keeping embers out. If bats may be present, seek advice before proceeding.

• Move flammable materials like leaves, compost heaps, and log piles away from the exterior walls of your house.

• Ensure that your house name or number is easily visible from the road, aiding emergency services in locating you in case of a fire.

• Avoid parking next to fire hydrants, marked with a yellow ‘H’ plate.

New housing policy approved

Ringwood clubs, organisations and community groups are being encouraged to mark the 800th anniversary of a hugely important event for the town.

In March 1226 during the reign of Henry III, Ringwood received the royal charter to hold a market in the town.

To celebrate this historic anniversary, a community celebration will take place on Sunday 12 July in Ringwood Market Place.

The day will begin with a church service in the Market Place from 10.30am to 11.30am, followed by the official event hosted

by Ringwood Town Council from 11.30am onwards. Celebrations will continue throughout the afternoon and evening until 7.30pm, followed by a funfair on Bickerley Green.

Attractions will include Morris dancers, traditional village games, market stalls, hot and cold food and arts and crafts. A bar will be provided by Ringwood Carnival, while visitors can enjoy an animal petting experience hosted by Riverside Lakes.

Ringwood Town Council will promote related activities through its social media channels, and a commemorative logo is available for organisations wishing to support and celebrate the anniversary.

Dorset Council has been working to ensure fairness for people waiting for a home.

The Full Council meeting approved the Housing Allocations Policy 2026–2031, replacing the existing policy so the Housing Register remains consistent and based on up-to-date information.

The launch date for the new policy is 1 September 2026. Most of the 6,921 people who are currently on the register will be asked to complete a simple renewal of their existing application.

Anyone registered more recently and after 1 January 2026 will not be asked to complete a renewal because the information will be up to date and instead will be automatically reassessed.

Once a renewal has been reviewed, applicants will be told their housing band under the new policy. Some people will receive this before 1 September 2026, while others may hear afterwards. A woman wronged

By Julian Hewitt | Fordingbridge Museum My last article looked at the fate of the rebel Duke of Monmouth after the defeat of his army in 1685. Another local victim of the Monmouth Rebellion was an elderly lady who lived near Fordingbridge.

Dame Alice Lisle lived at Moyles Court, a 17th-century redbrick house, and was married to John Lisle, who was an MP in the Long Parliament of Oliver Cromwell. He was one of the commissioners who sat in judgment at the trial of King Charles I, whose guilty verdict led to his execution.

After the restoration of the monarchy, John Lisle fled to Switzerland fearing for his life — unfortunately, he was assassinated there by an agent of the Crown in 1664.

Dame Alice did not share his views and was devastated when Charles I was executed. She was, however, sympathetic to the nonconformist movement; so, when John Hicks, a nonconformist minister, turned up at her door looking for shelter, she assumed that it was because he had been illegally preaching.

After the defeat of Monmouth’s army at the

Battle of Sedgemoor, many soldiers from the Monmouth army fled the battlefield, with the King’s troops in hot pursuit. Hicks brought with him Richard Nelthorpe, and both were fugitives from the battle. Unfortunately for Dame Alice, they had been seen approaching the house and they were soon arrested by Colonel Penruddock, who had been hunting down the escapees from the rebellion.

Hicks was found hiding in the malthouse and Nelthorpe concealed in a chimney.

They were both hanged, drawn and quartered.

Dame Alice was arrested for harbouring traitors and was taken to Fisherton Gaol in Salisbury. After five weeks, she was sent to Winchester to be tried by the much-feared Judge Jeffreys. Her defence was that she did not support the Monmouth Rebellion, did not realise that Hicks had done anything other than some illegal preaching, and that she knew nothing of Nelthorpe. However, Jeffreys was determined to find her guilty and reminded the jury of her husband’s antiroyalist beliefs. Despite them

finding her not guilty, he sent them back to reconsider and eventually they gave in to his bullying and found her guilty.

Alice was 68 years old and had been prone to falling asleep during the trial. Despite her age, Jeffreys condemned her to be burnt at the stake the same afternoon, but was persuaded to allow her two days before the sentence was carried out.

An appeal to King James II only resulted in her sentence being commuted to beheading.

Alice was imprisoned in a first-floor room of The Eclipse Inn in Winchester marketplace.

She stepped through the window onto a hastily built scaffold to meet her grisly end. Her body was taken back to Ellingham Church, where her grave can be seen to the right of the porch.

Her ghost is reputed to haunt The Eclipse Inn and Moyles Court, and a driverless coach, drawn by headless horses carrying her back to her home, is supposed to have been seen on Ellingham Drove in Ringwood. There is a pub nearby named after Alice, overlooking Rockford Lake.

on the throne, her conviction was reversed at the request of two of her daughters because of the “irregular prosecution” caused by the “menaces” of Judge Jeffreys.

Moyles Court was later used as station HQ for the nearby Ibsley Airfield in WWII. It then became a private school but is set to close this year (see page 23). It was also the setting for the fictional Bramhurst Court in Thomas Hardy’s ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’.

I am always fascinated by the dramas that occurred in the past on our doorstep and take a vicarious pleasure from visiting the locations of these events. I have yet to see any ghosts, but it is easy to imagine the trauma and emotions of those involved.

First sports festival for Wimborne Photos © Viewpoint Magazine Wimborne Minster held its inaugural Sports & Active Leisure Festival on Willow Walk on Sunday 19 April as part of its Town of Culture 2026 programme.

Officially opened by the Mayor of Wimborne Minster,

Cllr Jeff Hart, and the town crier Chris Brown, the event set the tone for a community celebration of sport and activity, led by local clubs, coaches and businesses.

Activities included a climbing wall, football, bowls and cricket with things to do for all fitness

levels, from gentle sessions to more energetic challenges.

Visitors enjoyed trying boules, cricket skills, trampoline fitness, balance and strength games, kayaking simulators, aerial hoop and martial arts. There was also plenty of fun with mermaid tails and interactive games.

The event was organised by the Sports and Active Forum Committee, Wimborne Minster BID and the Wimborne Town of Culture 2026 team.

Living Well in Later Life project launched A new five-year project aimed at helping older people stay active, independent and connected has officially launched across Hampshire.

Age Concern Hampshire has announced the start of its Living Well in Later Life project, supported by the

National Lottery Community Fund, which will deliver a wide range of physical activity and wellbeing sessions in communities across the county.

Sessions will focus on improving strength, balance and overall wellbeing, while also creating opportunities to help tackle loneliness and isolation.

Ella’s mum Chloe says Julia’s House is helping to fill her daughter’s world with giggles and laughter...

We were told to say our goodbyes when Ella was just three days old. But she’s five now. She’s surpassed all expectations, so we really have no idea what she’ll do next.

Ella was 3lb 4oz when she was born, she was so teenytiny. She needed oxygen and a small bowel operation but otherwise seemed stable.

Then, at three days old, we were told Ella had Edwards’ syndrome and that she was ‘incompatible with life’ — if she survived, she’d never walk, talk or eat, and all her organs would fail.

But Ella’s the complete opposite of incompatible with life; she’s the happiest little girl you could ever meet — she’s constantly beaming!

When Ella was six weeks old, we brought her home.

But within days, Ella suddenly went grey and floppy and stopped breathing. She died in my arms, and I had to give her CPR. It was terrifying. Up until she was around four, any little bug would make her really poorly, and we’d end up in hospital. But while Ella is diddy, she’s tough.

Why HRT can lead to poor results

By Dr Vanessa Emslie PhD, chief medical officer at Willbe An estimated 2.8 million patients receive Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) in the UK. For many women starting HRT during perimenopause, the expected reduction of brain fog, low mood, or unexplained irritability just doesn’t happen. Or worse, their symptoms increase, or they add more to the list: feeling bloated, anxious, or exhausted.

Over 40 per cent of women stop HRT within the first 12 months of starting, potentially missing out on both symptom relief and the benefits of hormones for chronic illness.

However, it’s not your body (or physician) failing the medicine, it’s the medicine failing to account for your unique genetic blueprint and metabolic pathways. Our hormones don’t operate in a vacuum — they are influenced by our DNA and lifestyle decisions.

Vintage tea raises £2,516 for charity

A vintage afternoon tea held at The Barrington Centre raised £2,516 for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation, with lively entertainment provided by the Land Girls.

The event would not have been possible without the dedication of the team of 18 volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

BV Dairy in Shaftesbury donated clotted cream, while Asda Poole, Castlepoint and Bournemouth donated bread, sandwich fillings, scones and jam.

Community Champions Vikki, Kym and Nicky gave up their Saturday to lend a helping hand.

Linda Thornton said: “Thanks go to local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle, which alone raised an impressive £800, and to Stuart from HSBC for his continued support and matching donation.”

The funds raised will enable the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation to provide even more opportunities for local young people in the coming year.

Rare species thriving in the New Forest Pine martens, sand lizards, water shrews and adders, as well as the candelabra coral fungus, are among 1,100 species recorded in the New Forest during a twoyear nature recovery project.

Almost 100 different types of bird, including 13 ‘priority’ species, and more than 300 plants were identified through survey work during the project, which saw 321 hectares of land — the equivalent of 418 football pitches — enhanced for the benefit of New Forest wildlife.

A total of 28 mammal species and seven species of reptile and amphibian were recorded, including two sand lizards, which are nationally red-listed as endangered.

Prof Russell Wynn, director of Wild New Forest, said: “There were multiple sightings of pine martens during surveys in 2024 and 2025, as well as a pair marking their scent on the same rhododendron stump an

hour apart in October 2025.

“A nearby camera also recorded a female pine marten transferring at least three kits between den sites, which suggests breeding took place locally.”

Experts from various organisations came together for the £1.3 million Species Survival Fund scheme, led by the New Forest National Park Authority, to create and restore grassland, heathland, wetland and woodland habitats around the edges of the Forest.

Fundraising campaign saves Upton Heath Vikki Slade, Lib Dem MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, said she is delighted that Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) successfully purchased an area of Upton Heath following a fundraising campaign in April.

The land was due to be sold at auction with historic minerals permission.

According to DWT, this meant the land was vulnerable to speculative development that could cause devastating and irreversible harm to the wider Upton Heath Site of Special Scientific Interest.

DWT raised over £100,000 from the community in just two weeks, with further significant contributions from private donors. Dorset Council and BCP Council also provided major contributions.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions on 15 April, Vikki Slade asked Keir Starmer to join her “in congratulating Dorset Wildlife Trust and the people of Dorset for their incredible efforts to secure Upton Heath for nature”.

However, she stressed that although the bid has been accepted, there are outstanding costs that remain. She has written to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs regarding the Species Recovery Programme, which @Dorset_View

is set to invest £60 million over the next three years. Some of this money could finance efforts to restore Upton Heath and benefit six native species of reptile, 16 species of dragonfly and other rare birds and wildlife that live on the land.

She also called on the Prime Minister to protect sites across the country by using legislation that would remove extant planning permissions whenever an area receives a national or international protective designation.

Upton Heath was made a Site of Special Scientific Interest in August 2025, yet the mineral excavation permissions date back to the 1950s, which inflated the price of the land.

Brian Bleese, chief executive at DWT, said: “I am totally overwhelmed by the amazing response from the local community, our partners and supporters in response to this urgent appeal to save Upton Heath. This land will now be protected for wildlife and for people, forever.”

DWT has begun restoration work to reinstate heathland management, improve public access, and deliver long‑term conservation benefits across the 10th largest area of heathland in Dorset.

Ringwood private school to close Local boarding school Moyles Court has announced it will close at the end of the academic year due to financial pressure and falling student numbers.

The school revealed the decision to parents at the start of April.

It called out the Labour government’s decision to charge VAT on private school fees as a major reason for the closure. According to Moyles Court, this is causing many families to no longer be able to afford independent school fees.

Moyles Court added that the model for small private schools is no longer financially viable. Declining local birth rates, a fall in international boarding, and the financial pressures facing families were other factors making it impossible to sustain the school.

In response to the news, local MP Sir Desmond Swayne criticised the Labour government. The Conservative MP for New Forest West said: “Moyles Court School was an excellent school.

It will now be a terrible shame for all those pupils and their parents who now face the disruption and stress of finding somewhere else.

“The VAT imposed was supposed to provide for the recruitment of 6,000 more teachers. Where are they?”

A spokesperson for Ringwood Town Council also shared a response following the school’s closure: “Ringwood Town Council is sorry to hear the news of the planned closure of Moyles Court School and recognises that this will be a concerning time for pupils, families and staff.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we hope that all pupils are able to make a smooth transition to their next stage of education.”

Teddy takeover at local schools

June is going to be an important month for teddy bears.

To mark Children’s Hospice Week,15–21 June, Dorset-based hospice Julia’s House (this magazine’s charity of the year) is organising the Big Teddy Takeover.

Children are invited to bring their favourite cuddly toy into school on a day of their choice in June, along with a donation of £1 for the Corfe Mullen-based children’s hospice. Schools are encouraged to get involved and run other activities, like teddy bear picnics, cake sales or book swaps, to help raise vital funds for the charity.

Last year, around £6,000 was raised for local families, and this year Julia’s House is also encouraging adults to take part and bring a cuddly toy into work.

This year’s campaign is being supported by Bournemouth Water.

Stamping out anti-social behaviour

By David Sidwick | Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner Tackling anti-social behaviour (ASB) is a key priority in my Police and Crime Plan. I know the real impact it can have on people’s daily lives, making residents feel unsafe in their own communities. As Police and Crime Commissioner, I am committed to ensuring ASB is addressed proactively, effectively and in partnership with those who know their communities best.

This commitment led me to establish the Operation Relentless Community Fund when I took office in 2021. The fund is designed to support practical, community-led solutions that prevent and reduce ASB, by giving local organisations the tools and resources they need to make a lasting difference.

Since its launch, the fund has awarded more than £210,000 across five funding

rounds to 53 projects in 49 locations across Dorset. These initiatives range from community outreach programmes and mentoring schemes to sports and skills-based activities, all focused on creating positive opportunities, particularly for young people, and tackling the root causes of ASB. I am immensely proud of the organisations delivering this work and the results they are achieving. For example, AFC Bournemouth has delivered 230 hours of one-to-one mentoring for young people at risk of becoming involved in ASB. Home-Start Wessex has provided targeted support to families facing complex challenges, while Weymouth Skate Park has welcomed more than 200 young people through reduced-cost sessions designed to offer a safe and positive outlet.

The impact is already being

felt in communities. Corfe Mullen Town Council has reported a reduction in ASB around a local play park, while Littlemoor Youth and Community Services has seen an 80 per cent reduction in ASB incidents alongside wider positive outcomes for local young people.

This work is not about passing responsibility elsewhere. It is about empowering communities and organisations to deliver the solutions they know will work locally. Tackling ASB requires more than enforcement alone — it depends on strong partnerships between Dorset Police, councils, charities and community groups to prevent problems before they escalate.

Encouragingly, ASB across Dorset has fallen to its lowest level in 16 years. High-visibility foot patrols by Dorset Police in known ASB hotspots have

been integral to this success, playing a significant role by ensuring incidents are dealt with promptly and working closely with partner agencies such as local authorities.

I want to be clear though, while I am pleased with the progress made, I know there is more to do to ensure residents feel safe.

Through targeted policing, effective prevention and continued investment in diversionary initiatives, we remain determined to drive ASB down even further, and ensure Dorset remains one of the safest places in the country.

Starry Skies

By Mark Hardaker FRAS For many people, the winter sky is the most memorable, filled with brilliant stars such as those in the Orion and Taurus constellations. Yet by May, these familiar patterns have slipped away into the western twilight, replaced by a subtler but rewarding set of spring constellations.

Spring evenings over Dorset are dominated by the great figure of Leo, the Lion. It is easy to recognise, thanks to a curved pattern of stars known as the Sickle, which resembles a backwards question mark. At its base lies the bright star Regulus, marking the lion’s heart.

Leo is a reminder that many constellations come from ancient mythology; in Greek legend, this was the Nemean lion, a fearsome beast defeated by the hero Heracles (also known as Hercules) during one of his famous labours.

In the southern mid-sky on May evenings lies the large

constellation Virgo. Its brightest star, Spica, shines with a steady bluish light and is actually a pair of massive stars orbiting one another every four days. Virgo occupies a region of sky rich in distant galaxies, though these faint objects generally require a decent telescope to find them rather than the naked eye.

Below Virgo is a much smaller but distinctive constellation: Corvus, the Crow.

It forms a neat quadrilateral of stars that is easy to spot once you know where to look. In mythology, the crow was once Apollo’s trusted messenger, but after delivering unwelcome news, it was punished and placed forever in the sky.

Stranded in Dubai Conflict in the Middle East left two people from Dorset stuck in Dubai for nearly three weeks Operation Epic Fury began on 28 February, when the US and Israel launched a series of strikes on Iran.

The resulting missile attacks and airport closures caused by the war also led to a couple from Dorset being stranded in Dubai for nearly three weeks.

Revd Louise and Revd Richard White had travelled to Dubai for a short family visit. The pair, whose shared ministry is in the villages of Church Knowle, Corfe Castle, Kimmeridge, Kingston, Langton Matravers, Steeple with Tyneham and Worth Matravers, had travelled to the city in the United Arab Emirates on 27 February for what was meant to be a six-day trip.

They were visiting their 28-year-old daughter, Laura, who has been living and teaching in Dubai for more than two years.

But within hours of their arrival, airports were shut and flights were grounded due to the conflict in the Middle East, leaving the couple unable to return home.

Louise said: “We landed in Dubai just before midnight and the following morning received messages telling us that the airports were shut.

“At first, we thought it must be a rumour and we didn’t quite believe it. It took us a while to understand what was really happening and to overcome our disbelief that we were actually caught up in the situation with no knowledge of when we would be able to return. But we were both so grateful that we were there with our daughter, to

experience it with her and find our way through together.”

The couple began receiving daily alerts on their phones warning them of incoming strikes and often heard the booms caused by Iranian missiles and drones being intercepted, leaving nothing but smoke in the sky.

Despite the danger, Louise says day-to-day life was otherwise quite ordinary.

“It was very real and very nearby initially, and the first few days were quiet,” she recalled.

“But people soon adapted: the parks were busy with families and children, cafés were full, people were walking, running, exercising their dogs, just doing normal life.”

Louise says they visited a local shopping mall regularly because it felt safer due to its windowless central areas.

Eventually, the couple secured seats on a flight back to England, but the departure was uncertain: while waiting at the boarding gate, missile alerts forced passengers to evacuate to a safe area.

The couple finally landed safely in the UK after 18 days abroad — three times longer than originally planned. They were met at the airport by a churchwarden from their parish.

During their ordeal, the couple shared updates online and received messages of encouragement from friends and parishioners. The pair thanked the community for their support.

“We felt carried by people’s prayers,” Louise added. “People’s love and

support was quite amazing.

Our parishioners were praying for us, and they even sent us pictures of services. It was overwhelming in the most wonderful way.”

Louise added that the experience has reinforced the importance of faith

and community.

“As a vicar, you’re always busy and there are so many things that you have to do.

But this reminded me what really matters — recognising the importance of community, prayer, worship and caring for one another.”

Roar-some HELLO?! adventure I’M IN THE BARN! in Wimborne A comedian best known for yelling into a giant mobile phone is to perform at The Barn in Ringwood later this year.

Dom Joly was the star of the hidden camera prank show ‘Trigger Happy TV’ from 2000 to 2003.

The show was well known for its surreal comedy and practical jokes, including Joly shouting “Hello” into an oversized Nokia phone while in a public location including an art gallery, Joly dressing as a snail and crawling across a busy zebra crossing, and actors in animal costumes acting rudely in front of ordinary people.

To celebrate the programme’s 25th anniversary, he has created a stage version of the hit show and is going on tour around the country, starting in September.

Ringwood residents keen to see the comedian’s antics live can see Dom Joly at The Barn on Friday 6 November.

To celebrate the show, Joly plans to bring his most iconic characters and sketches to the stage. Expect to see fan-favourite moments from the show, including The Giant Snail, The Traffic Warden, The Morris Dancer, The Scout, A Gang of Squirrels, and the iconic Big Mobile Phone.

Joly will also share behindthe-scenes stories and insights into how these moments came to life. But the surprises don’t stop there — this is live theatre, and fans can expect the unexpected.

There’s still time to visit Wimborne Minster’s Museum of East Dorset and take part in its latest family-friendly trail.

‘Dinosaur Adventure’ runs until Saturday 6 June and offers several activities for budding palaeontologists.

The museum’s celebration of all things prehistoric includes building your own pair of binoculars, constructing a model dinosaur skeleton piece by piece, or trying to stomp like a dinosaur by wearing oversized foam dino feet.

There will even be an archaeological dig. Using special tools, children can uncover models of prehistoric dinosaur skulls, teeth, fossils and even a replica skeleton fossil.

And visitors can embark on a dinosaur hunt throughout the museum and gardens to discover large dinosaur cut-outs decorated by children from seven local schools.

Amy Webster, events officer for the museum, said: “This community-focused trail not only adds colour and excitement to the museum but also celebrates the creativity of local children.”

Although written by Alan Aycbourn in 2011, the company put in an allusion to a certain red tie-wearing American president in what I can only describe as a brilliant production Another play in the theatre’s ‘Dying with Laughter’ series, ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ tells the story of Martin and his sister Hilda, who in all innocence set up a Neighbourhood Watch group following some petty crime from a nearby estate.

However, the group goes out of control and becomes an authoritarian force controlling the lives of the people they are supposed to protect. Think the erection of stocks and other means of subjugation.

There was plenty of humour, more than a touch of sadness and outstanding performances from the eight-strong cast.

Barry Gray was simply superb as the apparently straightlaced Martin, with his comedic timing teaming so well with Hilda (Amanda Hyatt) whose every facial expression told a thousand words.

Chas Davenport, who has appeared with many local groups over the past 30 years, encapsulated the former security guard Ron with bluster and huge spoonfuls of humour.

Nicola King was the gossipy neighbour who skilfully interjected in every conversation.

The part of next-door neighbour Magda required Marianne Chabin to be in a constant state of distress and this she perfected as the music teacher with a chilling secret.

Her husband Luther gave Topher Lynn the chance to be both sinister and unpleasant in equal measure.

I’m sure that when Emma Seymour was cast as the overthe-top flirtatious Amy she must have decided to run with it, as she gave it her all with her playful teasing, head tilting and artful strutting.

Lindsay Jones not only had to put in a well-rounded performance as unemployed engineer Gareth but also had to take the reins as director when his predecessor had to drop out for health reasons.

Tips for buying a used car Buying a second-hand car is often a more affordable option than getting a brand-new car. According to the car experts, The Motor Ombudsman, nearly eight million used cars changed hands last year.

If you’re thinking of investing in a used car this year, here are some tips from The Motor Ombudsman on what to look out for.

Can you afford it?

As well as the sale price, consider the long-term costs of running the car to make sure you can afford to own it.

Check how much the vehicle’s road tax will be, how much it will cost to insure, and think about how you will afford the costs of servicing and maintenance to keep it in good order. Will you need to replace the tyres? How close is it to needing its next MOT? If you’re buying the car on finance, make certain you can afford the monthly repayments.

If the seller offers an extended warranty, it is worth considering, as this could help with the bills in the event of a major fault. Read any terms very carefully to know exactly what the policy does and does not cover when it comes to making a claim.

Check the history It’s vital to check the paperwork and records of a used car. Make sure the number plate and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the V5C logbook match the car.

Review the service history for any gaps in the records and to see how well it has been maintained — the seller should have invoices and receipts for any repairs or parts the car previously required and that may need to be changed in the near future.

Check if the car has any known issues. You can look online to see if the manufacturer has issued a safety recall for the vehicle.

The car’s MOT history should also detail any previous faults or existing issues.

Take it for a spin Test drives are crucial to see what it will actually feel like to use the car day to day. Listen for any squeaks and rattles, which may indicate an issue with the vehicle.

Don’t just go for a quick drive round the corner. Take an extended drive on a mix of roads and use it as an opportunity to ask the seller how everything works, such as any in-car technology.

Car checks to save you money With fuel prices rising so much in recent months, it has never been more important to see if you can cut motoring costs.

Road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is encouraging drivers to give their cars a simple seasonal check to reduce the risk of an unwanted breakdown.

GEM says focusing on tyres, lights, wipers and essential fluids will help make the most of a journey to the countryside or coast.

Head of road safety, James Luckhurst, says a few simple actions can reduce the risk of an unexpected

roadside breakdown and help ensure your early-summer getaway is not disrupted.

He said: “Fuel costs are at record levels, so keeping a car in good condition will help you get the most from every drop of fuel or kilowatthour of battery charge.

“Correct tyre pressures alone can typically improve fuel economy by around three per cent, while gentle acceleration, anticipating traffic flow and avoiding hard braking all help to reduce consumption and extend electric driving range.

“Many simple tasks can be completed at home with reference to your driver

handbook. A local garage or mobile technician can help with anything more involved.

After all, a car that’s fit for the road is safer, less stressful to drive and much less likely to let you down, which is good news for your wallet as well as for everyone’s safety.”

Here are some simple checks to avoid a breakdown: Inspect tyre pressures and tread depth. Check you have at least 3mm of tread by putting a 20p coin into the groove of a tyre. If you can see the outer band when the coin is in the tread, your tyre is likely to be at or below the legal limit and needs replacing.

Ensure all lights and indicators are working.

Replace worn wiper blades and top up oil, coolant, brake and screen-wash levels.

By Luke Graham | Photos © Viewpoint Magazine West Moors Memorial Hall was filled with flowers on Saturday 28 March as West Moors Horticultural Society held its 74th annual Spring Show.

Growers and crafters competed across several different categories, including classes for flowers, floral art and handicrafts.

Dozens of prize daffodils were on display, and the Daffodil Society awarded Best Bloom in Show to Ron Benfield, who also won Best Daffodil Variety.

Mrs M Newman received a Certificate of Merit for Floral Art for her small-scale ‘Spring Hedgerow’ flower arrangement.

Other winners included N Castro, who came first for One Orchid in a Pot; Arthur Evans, who came first for his display of spring flowers in a jam jar; and Rosemary Dunning, whose floral art won the category for ‘Spring in a Tea Cup’.

The society’s Acting Chair Mike Latham, whose daffodils won a prize at the Verwood and District Horticultural Society’s Spring Show, described the day as “excellent”.

Asked about the standard of entries, he said: “It was a very difficult spring, especially for daffodils. I had my first daffodil up in January; you wouldn’t really

expect one until the end of February, so I lost loads and loads of really nice specimens, and I’m sure other people did.

“But there is a wide range of daffodils that come up at different times, and the judges thought it was reasonable. There are some very nice ones on display.”

Chance to explore The village of Witchampton is inviting one and all to explore its beautiful gardens and green spaces.

Witchampton Open Gardens happens every two years and this year takes place on Sunday 24 and Monday 25 May from 11am to 4pm.

More than 18 village gardens will be open to the public, and Witchampton Church of England First School will create a fairy door trail for children to explore.

Artist studios will also be open, there will be a plant stall, and allday refreshments will be available. Plus, local guitarist Polly Morris will perform in Witchampton Church on the Monday at 6.30pm.

Admission for the day costs £10 for adults and is free for under 14s. Proceeds will go towards the maintenance of Witchampton Church and to support the village’s community organisations.

Join Wimborne 41 Club for fun and friendship Wimborne 41 Club has reformed in Wimborne Minster, and we meet evenings on every second Tuesday of the month.

We are offering open membership to all men over the age of 40, so why not come along and join a world-wide organisation of over 10,000 members of like-minded men?

We meet locally each month, usually for a meal and to chat, but also talks by guest speakers, go to events or on trips across Dorset.

We also work with and help our local Round Table, who undertake charitable work and organise get-togethers in Wimborne as well.

Just recently, our Chairman Trevor Langford was honoured by being made vice president of the 41 Clubs Nationally — indeed an honour for our Wimborne Club.

Highlights from the past few months include playing skittles at the Coach & Horses, helping to marshal Wimborne’s Save The Children parade, and attending a Gala Dinner hosted by Bournemouth 41 Club and Tangent.

The individuals making a difference to the local community were celebrated at West Moors Town Council’s Annual Town Meeting on Thursday 16 April.

During the meeting, the Good Citizen Award was presented to honour the town’s unsung heroes.

This year there were six nominees: Lee Long, for his year-round garden displays on Station Road and fundraising for charity; Noel Karpinski, for his work at Castleman Community Larder; Lynne Smith, for contributing to the wider community, working with children in school, with the elderly through various church groups and with individuals who need help and assistance; Jo Breen, for volunteering with the West Moors Dementia Action Group and serving as its secretary; Ken Burke, for maintaining West Moors Cemetery; and Lynne Morris, for her work as chair of the West Moors Dementia Action Group for nearly 11 years.

The Good Citizen Award Panel chose Ken Burke as this year’s worthy winner, for giving his time to help keep this important community asset neat and tidy. The town council thanked all the nominees for their hard work and for making West Moors a better place to live and work.

History society remembers Ferndown’s past

When it comes to areas with a long history, Ferndown doesn’t necessarily spring to mind compared with neighbouring Wimborne Minster, Poole and Christchurch. However, it does have a thriving history society.

Meeting at The Barrington Centre at 7.15 pm on the first Thursday of every month, the society’s programme has included talks on ‘Paranormal Wimborne’, ‘The Development of Bournemouth

Square’, Merley House and Bovington Tank Museum.

Did you know that Ferndown once boasted a zoo, which operated from 1947 to 1954 in Ringwood Road? It housed animals including lions, bears, leopards, monkeys, and a popular gorilla. The site also featured a miniature railway.

The Ferndown and District Historical Society was founded in 1987 by Andy Palmer, who was then just 15, and the late Percy Christopher.

Andy said: “We have lots of photos, artefacts, old historical books and maps relating to local history. And at one time we had a history room at Stapehill Abbey when it was a visitor attraction.”

The society also has bottles from Bolton’s Dairy and wartime memorabilia.

One prominent person who lived in Ferndown was golfer Peter Alliss, and the famous Welsh painter Augustus John was a frequent visitor to the area.

Horticulture contributed to the growth of Ferndown, beginning in 1859 when the Stewart family established a nursery to grow plants in warmer conditions than at their principal site in Scotland. At first their business was concerned with landscaping tennis courts and golf courses, but in 1955 they opened one of the first garden centres in Britain in Ferndown. It closed in 1975. Around that time, Ferndown was a village with a gravel road and a scattering of shops.
