The daffodils are out, the evenings are getting lighter and the sun is even starting to make an appearance every now and then. All great signs that the seasons are changing. Springtime is traditionally a time of new beginnings, hope and positivity. Here in our community, we have so much to be grateful for and so many things to look forward to over the coming months.

At the Allendale Centre we are excited to be welcoming back some of the traditionally annual spring events that have been very much missed over the last few years. The Folk Festival and the Literary Festival bring so much to the town and we look forward to being a part of both festivals once again. The Wimborne Horticultural Spring show returns, bringing with it both tasty and stunning entries across numerous competition categories.

This April sees the return of the brilliant Discover Wimborne, so look out for numerous activities throughout the town promoting the wonderful array of businesses that the town has to offer. Here at the Allendale on 23rd April, we will be showcasing the great selection of regular hirers that use the Centre as well as upcoming events and activities. You will have the chance to speak with our team about volunteering opportunities. There is always lots to do around here so more hands are always welcome!

There will be some new adventures too over the coming months, most notably the celebrations of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We have a packed weekend celebrating the Best Of British, with something for everyone – more details on page 21.

The Minster Market continues every Friday and has been a great success since relaunching bigger and better than ever in January. Continuing to grow and, welcoming new stalls most weeks, the number of traders now stands at over 50! There is not much that you cannot buy here on a Friday so please do pop by and discover what there is on offer.

We do appreciate that we are so lucky to live where we do, with all of these things and more to look forward to this Spring and recognise that so many are not as fortunate, especially during these unsettled times. The team at the Allendale wish light, hope and joy across not only our community but all communities around the world, and stand with Ukraine in our hearts during the coming months.

Monthly Lunch Clubs return to the Allendale After a pandemicinduced interruption, the monthly Lunch Club is back!

Like so many activities, our established monthly Lunch Club had to take a break but - like so many activities - customers couldn’t wait to see it resume. We ran a very popular Christmas Lunch in December, restarted the monthly event in January, and February’s lunch was sold out weeks in advance!

An extra highlight of the February event was live music and poetry readings from the wonderful Mandy Stansfield (see photos).

The next Lunch Club, at the time of writing, is Tuesday 29th March, followed by Tuesdays 26th April, 31st May and 28th June. Tickets need to be pre-booked (early booking recommended!) either at the Allendale or at www. theallendale/box-office

Wimborne Rotary ‘Jazz at the Allendale’ another great success!

With thanks to John Gully, PR Officer, Wimborne Rotary On 9 February ‘Jazz at the Allendale’, organised by Wimborne Rotary, saw a nearly full capacity audience in the Allendale’s Minster Hall enjoy a wide-ranging concert programme of music and vocals provided by Swing Unlimited Big Band. There was no doubting the warm response of the audience, who generously contributed to a retiring collection which raised over £1400. After deduction of expenses www.theallendale.org

Happy Eostre

Easter is many things to many people: a major festival in the Christian calendar, the first bank holiday since the new year, an opportunity to get away for a long weekend and a warming-up in the British weather (the last one, not guaranteed!). But is there more to the history and traditions of Easter than most of us know? What about the origin of things associated with it – bunnies, eggs, hot cross buns?

Let’s start with the name itself.

According to the Venerable Bede, writing in the late 600s or early 700s, Eostre (‘ay-oh-ster’), also known as Ostara, was the Germanic/AngloSaxon goddess of dawn and spring; Ostara is also the name for the spring equinox in the Pagan Wheel of the Year. During Eostremonath (the month equating to modern April), Pagans held festivals in her honour, celebrating spring, new beginnings and new life. The word ‘Easter’ is derived from her name.

In the Christian tradition, Christ was crucified on Good Friday then resurrected, also representing the rebirth and new life themes of the Old Religion’s spring festival.

Bunnies and eggs Eostre’s symbol was the hare, their enthusiastic breeding representing the time of year when nature was fertile again after the long, cold winter. Over time, the wild hare became rebranded as the cute rabbit we see today.

When it comes to eggs, few things represent new life more than

the ovoid image. Some accounts suggest that Eostre could morph into a hare, or that Eostre’s hare was originally a bird, transformed by her into a quadruped that had the ability to lay brightly coloured eggs once a year. This ties in with the old Germanic tradition of the Oschter Haws (Easter Hare), who would lay eggs in the long grass for children - if they’d been good - to go out and hunt for.

Perhaps a more nature-based eggs-planation is that chickens that may not have laid eggs in winter will start again in spring. The bright colours of painted eggs reflect vibrant spring flowers bursting into life and though painting eggs is still an Easter tradition, the ones consumed these days tend to be just one colour - chocolate!

The bun and the moon On the subject of food, we come to lovely hot cross buns. Once a seasonal treat, they can now be found in the shops year-round but originally linked to Easter, the cross on the top represents the crucifixion, no? Well, that may depend on your beliefs; the four quarters created by the cross

also represent the four quarters of the moon. And the moon determines the date of Easter each year: Easter Day is the Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.

Back to baking, and have you ever wondered why Easter simnel cake is topped with 11 marzipan balls? This one’s purely Christian: the balls represent Christ’s 12 disciples, minus Judas. Just don’t invite 13 round to your dinner table. And talking of bad luck…

What’s bad on Good Friday?

Superstitious? Don’t… wash clothes, shower or take a bath; do any housework (best to avoid any work); eat or drink anything containing vinegar or nettles; allow children to climb trees.

Do… eat hot cross buns - they protect against shipwrecks and protect your home from fire, and get a haircut on Good Friday - your hair will grow back thicker and longer than ever.

Whatever you celebrate over the long weekend this April, I wish you a peaceful and happy time.

Wimborne in Bloom blooms again With thanks to Anthony Oliver

As I write this, we are preparing to run the ever-popular Wine and Wisdom Fun Quiz Evening in the Allendale Centre. It takes place on Friday 4th March, the exact anniversary of the first event which was held in the Town Hall on Friday 4th March 1994, when eleven teams enjoyed the evening. Over the years, the event moved from the Town Hall to Allenbourn Middle School and finally to the Allendale Centre. It has grown in size to a record of over forty teams

and although entries are down this year - perhaps people are still wary of coming out in large numbers - we hope it will be a good evening.

Plans for activities in this our 30th anniversary year are well in hand.

There will be a Fashion Show given

by M&Co on Friday 6th May and this will be followed by our Spring Coffee Morning on Saturday 21st May at 34, Park Lane, from 10am until 12noon.

The always-popular Open Gardens Day returns to its usual date of the last Sunday in June, the 26th.

A number of gardens in and around the town have already agreed to take part. Later, on the August Bank Holiday Saturday, we hope to run the Annual Duck race once again.

Summer planting this year will include hanging baskets and filling of the many Flower Towers and Planters around town. We are also entering the town in the South and South East In Bloom Competition after an enforced absence of two years.

The local competitions will also

run again: the Art and Poetry under the title ‘Festivals of Wimborne’, and the finished work will be on view at Walford Mill from the 6th to 17th July.

The shop window title is ‘Wimborne in Bloom’ and will take place during the week commencing Monday 4th July. The garden competition will take place the same week, so you will be able to enter the best front and back garden etc., once again.

Wimborne Minster Organ launch & events With thanks to Anthony Oliver Work continues on the rebuilding of the Minster organ and it is hoped that it will be completed for Easter.

At Festal Evensong at 6.30pm on Easter Sunday (17th April) the plan is that the organ will be dedicated

by The Right Reverend Dr Andrew Rumsey, Bishop of Ramsbury.

Later, on Saturday 14th May, there will be an Organ Launch Concert with a recital on the rebuilt organ at 7.30pm. It will be given by Ben Morris, Assistant Director of Music at York Minster. Tickets will be available from the Parish Office in Church House (next to the Minster).

Another concert will take place on Thursday 16th June; this will be given

But did you know they are able to provide you with goodwill advice and support for your home fire safety needs too?

DWFRS has trained staff who can come to your home, at a mutually convenient time. They will look around your property and provide you with life-saving information and advice, such as cooking and electrical safety - and they’ll also help you to create an escape plan, in case you should have a fire.

Nearly 50% of fires happen in the kitchen, and the Service is keen to remind people of the dangers. It’s all too easy to become distracted and leave cooking unattended.

Wimborne Literary Festival returns this May

By Malcolm Angel I’m very pleased to say that after a two year absence, we have been booking hard for the return of the great Wimborne Literary Festival.

Devotees may know that we’ve been building the fest from a very careful start which took place back in 2009 - when we introduced just a few authors to test the appetite, so to speak - since when it’s become an established annual event which now draws folk from far and wide.

We’ve tried to analyse the draw and believe that one reason could be because as well as some top names on the bill, we also introduce as much writing of merit as we can fit in. And, as has been mentioned by more than a few regular visitors planning a trip to Wimborne to take in the festival, we don’t double book. In other words, our events and speakers are spread so that you needn’t miss a single presentation.

We also leave room midday for visitors to grab a spot of lunch in Café at the Allendale or any of the other excellent eateries around town – which gives me and the dedicated crew, many of whom have been with us since our first tentative steps, the chance to recharge our batteries and catch up on the morning’s events over a quick cuppa and a sandwich.

At the time of writing this article I am still in the process of pulling things together and confirming a programme – which I have to say has been a different exercise from what was once the norm, having been uncertain that we would even be allowed to congregate again in this new year! This has meant, understandably, a late start to negotiations - so it’s been nose down for the last four weeks as we head towards this year’s exciting and entertaining festival.

managed to come along for the two ‘sell out’ rescheduled events at the Allendale (Amanda Owen in October and Michael Portillo in November) my very grateful thanks - especially for the lovely feedback after the events.

Anyway, back to this year’s festival.

There will be a great series of events, authors and speakers to excite your imagination and broaden your horizons - including British sailor, adventurer, author and historian Philip Beale who in 2019-20 led an epic recreation of a Phoenician voyage from Tunis to Florida - a 6000 mile and seven month journey in a vessel constructed using materials and techniques developed by the ancient Phoenicians. His aim was to prove that these master mariners, who were at the height of their power between 1100 and 200 BC, may well have traded with the Americas 2000 years before Columbus.

Praise for Philip’s book Atlantic BC from Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE, the world’s greatest living explorer: “History is always being rewritten.

But few people have the imagination and sheer guts of Philip Beale and his crew to demonstrate the seemingly impossible. This book is the most interesting and inspiring I have read in a long time”.

As I’ve said, we’re still booking and by the time this article goes to print the full programme will be available.

But let me just add two more tasters.

I can’t wait to meet Tess Eagle Swan and her dog Incredible Kratu, the happy go lucky Carpathian/ Mioritic Shepherd cross who, from his humble beginnings on a Roma camp in Transylvania, has gone on to become a canine international treasure. Now a trained assistance and therapy dog, he has brought joy to millions with his lovable antics - not least with his legendary appearances at Crufts! However, the role he’s played in his owner Tess’s story is more compelling still.

And I’m greatly looking forward to introducing LBC’s Iain Dale, who frequently appears on UK news channels. Iain is one of Britain’s leading political commentators and bloggers and a regular columnist for the Telegraph, Evening Standard and ‘i’ paper. He has written or edited more than forty books - his latest being The Presidents, and his highly relevant topic during the fest will be Prime Ministers, Presidents and Why We All Can’t Just Get Along.

Watch out for symptoms of lungworm in dogs With thanks to Vetsmiths, Wimborne

As we move towards the warmer Spring weather, this unfortunately provides the perfect opportunity for lungworm to spread more widely.

Vets are warning that the signs of lungworm aren’t always obvious and puppies can be especially likely to eat slugs and snails, due to their inquisitive nature.

Lungworm is a type of parasitic worm (known as Angiostrongylus Vasorum) which affects dogs and foxes (who are often implicated in spreading the disease). Once dogs are infected, adult lungworms live in their heart and the major blood vessels supplying the lungs, where they often cause a host of potentially serious problems.

Unlike many diseases, lungworm is not actually passed directly from dog to dog. They can be infected with lungworm larvae carried by slugs and snails (which act as intermediate hosts). The worm needs slug and snail hosts in order to grow and develop and it’s from eating these that infection may occur.

The larvae migrate into the dog’s circulation and travel to the right side of the heart and will then develop into adult worms. Here the adults mate and produce eggs that hatch into larvae and then migrate into the lung tissue. Dogs then pass larvae in their faeces, which in turn infect slugs and snails… and so the cycle continues.

Symptoms to look out for include: • Coughing • Breathing problems • Lethargy • Vomiting and Diarrhoea • Poor blood clotting/ persistent bleeding • Stomach and back pain • Losing interest in food • Behaviour changes The good news is, if diagnosed early, your dog can be successfully treated but the key is understanding that over-thecounter medications can’t protect dogs against this disease. Killing lungworm is relatively simple and involves making sure your annual preventative anti-parasite treatments administered are appropriate. Owners should speak to their vet to ensure their dog is continuously protected, is the best advice. www.vetsmiths.co.uk

Donating blood or organs are the most important things you can do to make a difference to someone else’s life, according to new research which ranks altruistic acts.

A survey of 2,189 adults in England placed blood and organ donation top in a poll of ways that people felt they could make a real difference to other people’s lives.

As most New Year resolutions are starting to deplete within a couple of months, NHS Blood and Transplant are urging people not to ditch their New Year resolution but instead switch and make a pledge to register as a blood or organ donor.

In the survey carried out in December 2021, respondents were asked: ‘When it comes to making a real difference in people’s lives, which of these do you think are the most important things that someone could do?’ Donating organs or giving blood came out as the two most important steps that people can take.

• 42 per cent of people citing organ donation as the most important • 43 per cent of people saying giving blood was most important.

Respondents said the biggest motivation for giving blood or donating organs was that they could help save or improve someone else’s life. For example, every time you donate blood, your donation could go on to save or improve the lives of up to 3 people.

Bournemouth Orchid Society have best ever Spring Show With thanks to Nick Fry

Bournemouth Orchid Society (BOS) staged their best Spring Show ever at the Allendale, on 26th February. Footfall was up considerably, enhancing the buzz throughout their family friendly show. All traders were kept busy throughout, reporting good sales.

The buzz was supported by many popular attractions including a huge variety of display orchids, the repotting* and instruction service plus many orchids and accessories for sale.

New for 2022, BOS launched their Learning Zone, with a special focus on joint parent and child hands-on activities. The aim was to provide an interactive, family inclusive learning experience for all. This event proved very popular, especially the crafty

things to make, the quizzes and particularly the mini laboratory providing a ‘window’ into the wonderful world of orchids.

All learning zone activities are provided free of charge so next show, bring along your children, or indeed grandchildren, ‘roll up your sleeves’, and get involved!

Young, able & ready for the future – meet Olly Bennett Interviewed by Gary Cox

We had a chat with young theatre technician Olly Bennett about his background and planned future.

ALLENDALE MAGAZINE (AM): Hi Olly, welcome to the Allendale Magazine.

OLLY BENNETT (OB): Thank you.

AM: You’ve been helping us with technical services in our Minster Theatre; what’s your background in this area?

OB: I started doing sound for an amateur dramatics company panto in Broadstone and enjoyed what I was doing. I then started programming shows at home using software just for my own entertainment. I was then offered a place to do lighting at the Allendale where I knew the basics of the desk as I had used Avolites for QE’s production of Les Misérables in 2020, and have recently programmed and run the lighting on the production of We Will Rock You. AM: And how have you found it at the Allendale?

OB: The Allendale has helped create a space for me to try new things. It’s also helped me gain more experience and better my understanding in sound and lighting. I’ve recently been working with several other companies to enhance my experience in running other events, which have primarily come from me being noticed doing events here. I’ve had the opportunity to help give other

young and keen students insight to events at the Centre and give them the amazing opportunities I’ve had.

AM: Which technical tasks do you enjoy most?

OB: I enjoy running the lighting desk primarily as that’s what I’m best at, but I’ve learnt that if something goes wrong and the sound technician isn’t there then you need to know the basics of how everything else runs, so I also enjoy the ability of running sound for events.

AM: You’re a young person, starting out in your chosen career. What’s next for you?

OB: I’ve been extremely lucky to start working for many companies that deal in sound and lighting and have been offered the amazing opportunity of an apprenticeship with Brighter Productions, which will help me stay in the industry and develop my skills every day. I don’t know what’s out there for my future but I’m aiming for a big future within the industry. I will always be with the Allendale as this is where I started, so I hope to continue my efforts working with them, alongside my career.

Thumbs up (or out?) for Dial-A-Ride With thanks to Ruth Atkin

A recent phone call to the Dial-a-Ride office went something like this…

Good morning, Dial-aRide, how can I help?

Whilst taking my father to Bournemouth Hospital we noticed one of your cars, we made a note of your number and decided to ring and find out a bit more. Is it a service that my father would be able to use?

If he lives in the East Dorset Area (we include Broadstone) and is not able to drive himself or access public transport – then yes, he would be eligible.

Is it just another hospital car service?

Hospital appointments do account for about half of our journeys but we also take our clients to other medical appointments, hair appointments, social events, shopping – in fact any activity that requires transport.

Is there a charge?

As we are a charity run by volunteers we do have to make a charge. This is based on the length of the journey (in miles) and whether it is a single or a return journey. We will tell the client the cost of the journey when it is booked and ask that the charge is placed in an envelope (cash or cheque) and given to the driver at the time of the journey.

Can you give me an example of the charge?

You mentioned Bournemouth Hospital – a return journey from Wimborne would cost £20.

How much notice is required to make a booking?

There’s no hard and fast rule for this but we do say that the more notice that you can give the better.

Although we do have three cars which are all able to take wheelchairs, there are days when the demand is greater than our capacity. It is also possible to make a regular booking for an activity which may occur on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

Do you operate 365 days a year?

Unfortunately not – we operate from Monday to Friday apart from Bank Holidays and over the Christmas/ New Year break. Most journeys take place between 9am and 5pm – but journeys outside these hours can also be arranged.

How do we register?

There is no registration. If you would like to use the service of Dial-aRide, just phone the office (01202 880699) and book your first journey.

The office is open from 9.30am until 12.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Not only did we hear from her again but the caller has since become a volunteer and helps in the Office one morning a week. If you would like more information or would be interested in volunteering – do phone the Office on 01202 880699.

We would particularly love to hear from you if you would consider volunteering to drive for Dial-a-Ride. Our drivers volunteer, on average, for one day a week – each month they give an indication of their availability and a rota is then drawn up. All necessary training is given and you would be most welcome to join our friendly team of volunteers.

Wimborne Minster Folk Festival 2022 – welcome back!

After two missing years, barring unforeseen events (and we would never have thought to add that in the past!), the Wimborne Minster Folk Festival returns in 2022. As usual, the event will run over the second weekend in June – from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th June.

This year will be bigger and better than ever as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. We have art included for the first time with exhibitions and workshops running in Allendale House.

The microbrewery will be moving to a bigger and more accessible location and children’s activities will be the primary focus on Willow Walk, with a busy programme over the weekend.

The streets will of course be filled with sounds and colours of the dancers as well as trade stands selling a myriad of goods with a dedicated artisan area in Crown Mead.

The music programme is full, varied and of the highest quality we can muster. We are delighted to welcome the wonderful Welsh Folk group CALAN. Described by Mike Harding of BBC Radio 2 as “Smashing”, these musicians have it all! “Energy, attitude, freshness, a sense of fun and above all, real talent.” (BBC Radio Wales). They will be performing in one of the ticketed concerts on the 12th June. www.theallendale.org

Megson are an English folk duo composed of husband and wife Stu and Debbie Hanna. The pair have released nine albums and one EP on their own label. Relevant, thought-provoking and brilliant - their music was described

by The Guardian as “One of the most original political folk sets of the year”.

For Energised Folk Rock, we bring you Merry Hell! Founded in Folk tradition but with new words and music forged from their own experiences, this band are incredibly talented driving, arresting and catchy songs, unstintingly excellent musicianship, and a natural flair for arrangement.

In addition, we are delighted to welcome favourites such as Charlie Dore, Fly Yeti Fly, Reg Meuross and Ranagri.

Buskers Bash, the traditional Festival mini-warm-up and our Live and Loud competition will be taking place over the weekend of April 23rd/24th.

You will be able to see the winners perform at the main Festival itself.

The Festival is now a growing event and could not run without our fantastic band of volunteers staffing our information points, concerts and other events. If you or anyone you know can spend a minimum of 4 hours over the Festival weekend we would be truly grateful as certain events (especially

“From behind the scenes to centre stage! Throughout my life, singing and performing have provided me with the perfect outlet to relax and unwind from the stresses and strains of a busy week. There’s something incredibly rewarding about being able to entertain people and sharing the music that inspires, motivates and moves you.

“Over the years, I’ve fronted a variety of different bands, performed as part of an acoustic duo and sung solo. I enjoy performing music from various genres, with a primary focus on rock and pop. Nothing beats the feeling of belting out my favourite tunes, collaborating with other musicians and sharing an evening of eclectic music with audiences. I always aim to provide a set as diverse as the crowd, featuring something for everyone with songs from Ben E. King, Prince, The Killers and The Scissor Sisters to name a few.

“Coming from a performing background has really helped me build a stronger connection to the performers and production companies who hire our facilities at the Allendale, and to better understand their requirements.”

With thanks to Emily Edwards, Principal, Ringwood and Wimborne Stagecoach At the time of writing, five Stagecoach schools in the Dorset and Hampshire area are coming together for one outstanding event on 19th March! Each school has their own time to shine on stage and the show will finish with a super finale, where all 350 children will come together for an energetic performance from the popular musical Hairspray.

The show will be attended by none other than the Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr. David Kelsey, who will appear on stage to open and close the show.

The event organisers, Peta Moffitt from Bournemouth Stagecoach and Emily Edwards from Ringwood and Wimborne Stagecoach planned this event as a celebration.

“It’s been a turbulent few years for our students, so to be able to offer 350 students the chance to perform to their families and to the public in a non-profit

show is amazing,” said Peta.

“At Stagecoach, although we are a Performing Arts school, our ethos is about creative courage for life and inclusivity. It isn’t just about being a talented performer, it’s about confidence and self assurance. Our students’ mental health has been affected in so many ways during the pandemic, so this event is a celebration for our students.”

Rehearsals are well underway and anyone in the Allendale Centre on a Tuesday afternoon will have no doubt heard some wonderful singing or perhaps glimpsed some energetic dancing! Students from Wimborne Stagecoach have gone for a school theme that includes songs from Matilda and School of Rock.

Minster Market @ the Allendale continues to grow

By Gary Cox When Minster Market @ the Allendale relaunched on 7th January, we had little idea how well it would be received by the local community, or indeed by stallholders trading at it.

Well, we needn’t have worried. Every Friday so far has been a great success!

Beginning with stalls in the Minster Hall and Quarter Jack Hall, plus stalls outside in our car park, it’s now expanded and includes antiques and collectibles stalls in the Canford Room.

We spoke to Becky, local Mum and founder of Embrace, about BabyBeats® Tell us about your background, Becky I spent over 10 years teaching in Primary Schools across London and Dorset, with a deep love for Early Years learning. When I had my own son, my passion for all things Early Years took a different direction. I took part in a baby massage class and loved it so much, that I became a certified Infant Massage Instructor myself. Around the same time, I also found the incredible Rose at BabyBeats®. After needing postnatal support myself to regain core strength and stability, I knew that I wanted to offer BabyBeats® classes to support others in their postnatal journey too.

Describe a typical class.

How does it stand out?

Embrace run a number of classes for babies and toddlers, however it is our BabyBeats® classes which will commence at the Allendale Centre after the Easter holiday, in April.

I fell in love with BabyBeats® as it is different from other postnatal fitness classes as it supports both Mum and baby! It’s a unique class which supports Mothers in their postnatal period by strengthening and supporting the body through gentle exercises, pelvic stability, mobility and relaxation. BabyBeats® also supports baby’s natural development through elements such as yoga, massage and sensory play.

Who is it suitable for?

Classes are suitable for Mums (and Dads!), and their babies from the 6 week postnatal check. BabyBeats® classes run up to the age of 5 months, with BabyBeats® Plus classes following on for babies up to fast crawling.

What do customers enjoy about the class?

In our most recent customer feedback survey, customers noted how “interactive”, “calm” and “sociable” their babies were. Mums and babies both enjoy one-to-one bonding time, which

is something those with older children especially love. Mums often mention that they love the time and space to be able to stretch, relax, and “get stronger whilst keeping [my baby] entertained!”.

Wimborne Community Food Supply at the Allendale

By Paul Gunovsky The Wimborne Community Food Supply operated by the Café @ The Allendale from within the Allendale Centre is still in full operation despite the current (and hopefully continuing) waning of coronavirus cases both locally and nationally.

Indeed, as we move from winter towards spring, we are starting to unfortunately see an increase in people coming to the hatch at the rear of the Allendale as the cost of living increases dramatically – especially with regard to energy prices.

We have a lovely band of volunteers, managed by Dani, who keep the shelves stocked and organised and are always happy to chat to our recipients, old and new, for whom this little bit of social contact can be a lifeline.

Although the number of deliveries we do has dropped – this was primarily driven by vulnerable people who were unable to go out during lockdowns – we still have a number to carry out every day. The drivers are also crucial to enable us to pick up from the two Co-operative shops in Colehill and Wimborne, to whom we continue to express our gratitude for their generosity. There is also a donation box in the Allendale Centre reception area if you would like to help out – all contributions are welcome including miscellaneous items like toothpaste, soap etc.

Although our volunteer numbers “in the shop” are sufficient to keep us in operation, we are desperately short of drivers to help us out. We ask for just one day per week and the whole collection and delivery process can be completed in less than a couple of hours. If you, or anyone you know, could help us out in this area we would be eternally grateful and you would be providing a valuable service to the local community.

The facility is open six days per week – please check the board at the rear of the Allendale Centre building for exact timings.

News from Café @ The Allendale

By Paul Gunovsky The Café @ The Allendale continues to flourish as we (hopefully) emerge from the pandemic of the past two years. We have extended our opening hours from 4pm to 5pm and it is exciting to welcome back many old (and young) friends as activities and classes return to the Centre itself.

We continue to run our music programmes on a Friday evening with a loyal audience of regulars and occasional visitors. We hope the number of the latter group will expand as weather permits and we are able to move evening music back outside again.

The major change for us in 2022 has been the arrival of Minster Market @ the Allendale. The Market runs from 8am until 2pm every Friday and the Café, as well as the Centre itself, is a hub of activity – a truly welcome sight after the last couple of difficult years. If we take a little longer to serve you on a Friday, please bear with us as our wonderful staff work at full pelt to keep everything flowing as quickly as possible.

We have recently refurbished our counter but there are bigger changes afoot with a new ceiling, lighting and floor planned for the first half of the year – there may be some disruption during these alterations but please be assured we will be working extra hard to keep that to a minimum.

You may also notice our new signs (including the menu board, pictured) brilliantly created by our signwriter Julia.

We look forward to your continued support during 2022 and beyond – and don’t forget we will be open for extended hours during the Platinum Jubilee and Folk Festival weekends in early June.

R E N R O C E Q This time, students at Queen Elizabeth’s School, Wimborne offer their thoughts about the Queen and her Platinum Jubilee.

Archie Mailer, Year 9

A powerful, kind and lovely woman.

Whatever she has been through herself, she has always been a Queen for us and has changed this country to make it better in so many ways.

It has been 70 years now where she has led this country to a better place and has always tried to make the best decisions. She has been like a mother to England and has looked after us no matter what.

Every day she probably has to make choices that will impact everyone way more than we will ever in our whole lives. Even though she has all this pressure on her back, she still comes out as a calm, cool person.

William Harwood, Year 9

For hundreds of years the monarchy has shaped our history. Queen Elizabeth ll has had an amazing life and has represented modern Britain like no other.

Earlier last year we saw the death of her husband Prince Philip. He was much beloved and the British public were so sad to see him pass away.

Regardless, Her Majesty rose above it and followed the Covid guidelines at his funeral.

This year marks her Platinum Jubilee and we celebrate her amazing service to our country.

The Queen is a very powerful lady, of course you have to be to be on the throne for 70 years. This June will be her Platinum Jubilee as England and many other countries celebrate her reign so far. As the Queen, you have a say in what goes on in the country which is very important but what she has also had an impact on is Britain’s, especially England’s reputation.

When we think of the Queen and England we picture in our minds Great Britain’s flag, garden parties, summer days and cakes and sandwiches in the sunshine. The Queen has so much of an impact on our country; we do have negatives across the world but when we think of the Queen, she puts a very positive smile on our faces. She is an amazing mother, grandmother and great grandmother but she is also an amazing mother of our country.

Natalie Walker, Year 9

The remarkable Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this year, proudly leading and representing her country. Even though Her Majesty is 96 this year, age doesn’t show with her fashion. The Queen wears luxurious, bright coloured clothing and always wears pearl earrings and a pearl necklace.

Nicole Paine, Year 9

The Queen has reigned for 70 great years. She represents all we love about our country and she is a symbol of, not only power, but of leadership and loyalty. Her smile is warm and welcoming and her eyes are hopeful and gentle. England will never forget.

Setting standards of grace, she never ceases to do her best for the country and its people.

The Queen dresses perfectly for every occasion. She plays a big role in England’s past and future. We should thank her. Long live the Queen.

Cody Collins, Year 9 As we approach the Queen’s 70th year on the throne, which is known as the Platinum Jubilee, it can be a time to celebrate what we know the Queen for which can be many things from power to loyalty. I mostly know the Queen for being a leader and having power and a final say in all that the government want to do.

I also know the Queen for living in Buckingham Palace in London which arguably makes London a more popular tourist destination. The Queen is also a great grandmother now which provides hope for the future of a royal family to help lead England. She is loved universally and is a worldwide monarch and treasure.

God bless the Queen.

Feeling a touch of vernalagnia this spring?

Don’t worry, there’s no need to see the doctor; vernalagnia is the romantic, passionate mood brought on by the season and is just one lovely but rare word that you can slip into conversation at this time of year. You may know that the spring equinox is also called the vernal equinox, from the Latin ‘vernus’, meaning ‘of the spring’, when the natural world is so fecund. Another fine word.

While all around you nature is erumpent (of plants, to grow out vigorously, to burst through) and early Chelidonian (warm westerly or south-westerly) winds blow gently on your face, enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of lencten. Lenc who?

Most likely from an Old German word meaning ‘lengthening’ (days), it’s another term for spring and the root of the word ‘Lent’. What a fine time

for reverdie (a medieval French song, poem or dance that celebrates the arrival of spring).

The short days and brumal (referring to winter) weather are behind us. Even if you’re no spring chicken, it’s time to put a spring in your step, become full of the joys of spring and try your new vernal vocabulary on those around you.
