Christchurch Food Festival attracted thousands of visitors over the weekend of 12 and 13 May. The festival has grown year on year and was spread throughout the town and down to the quay with stalls a-plenty, including a vegan and veggie quarter, demonstrations and live music.

Whilst writing my editorial, and multi tasking on Facebook, I read that one of the Silent Soldiers installed by Ferndown Town Council had been vandalised beyond repair.

These silhouette figures are part of a Royal British Legion campaign in support of the Poppy Appeal, to remember the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces during WWI. They are being installed around the country to commemorate the centenary of the end of the war (November 1918).

When I first reported on Silent Soldiers, I inwardly feared that some would become targets for vandals. Sadly, it didn’t take long for my fears to be founded and, judging from the comments on Facebook, others anticipated the same, yet, like me, are outraged by this wanton act of destruction.

The figures are quite costly, and though symbolic of those who returned after the war, they also serve to remind of the huge loss of life.It is anticipated that many businesses and community groups will install Silent Soldiers, thus raising money for the Poppy Appeal.

Let’s hope that this one idiotic act of vandalism does not turn into an epidemic and that others choosing to display soldiers will achieve it with success.

Perhaps we should all keep a watchful eye on our Silent Soldiers, in honour of the watchful eyes they kept for us all those years ago.

What is a Settlement Agreement?

By Dee Woodcock, Employment Solicitor at Harold G Walker Solicitors A Settlement Agreement is an effective, commercial way in which an employer can get an employee to quickly and effectively agree to settle any employment claims that they may have, for a sum of money.

This agreement settles, most importantly, not just contractual and common law claims, but statutory claims too, which are usually the most costly claim they are likely to have.

Settlement Agreements are often used by employers where they are in dispute with an employee and want to settle the matter quickly to avoid costly litigation. They can also be used by employers where they may be undertaking a restructuring, which could result in making some employees redundant. Although these may be legitimate redundancies, a Settlement Agreement ensures the individual

cannot bring a claim against the employer.

Settlement Agreements cover all aspects of the employee’s termination, including; employee’s pay, holiday pay, benefits up to the termination date, as well as how much compensation they will receive. It will also deal with the return of company property, confidentiality, and confirmation of any on-going restrictive covenants.

In order for an agreement to be binding, an employee must take independent legal advice and any costs should be covered by the employer.

The talents and charity efforts of a young woman from Poole were recognised when she was crowned Miss Dorset 2018.

Stephanie Wyatt, 18, took the title in the regional heat of Miss England held at the Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth, on 5 May. Stephanie said, “It is an absolute honour to be crowned Miss Dorset and I now look forward to attending the Miss England finals.

“I’m excited, nervous and overwhelmed but I was always told if your dreams do not scare you then you are not dreaming big enough.”

The event organiser Kelly Levell, founder of We Do Ethical, has worked hard to shake off the stigma attached to beauty pageants by focusing on skill-based rounds to find a well-rounded winner who will use her platform to support community groups and charities.

The contest has seen participants champion green living in a bid to make Dorset more sustainable for generations to come.

“I’m excited to work with Stephanie throughout the upcoming year and mentor her for the Miss England final with the help of Miss Dorset 2017, Samantha Bumford,” said Kelly.

queen will spend her year inspiring other young people as an ambassador for We Do Ethical Living.

She will also attend charity events, award ceremonies and business galas, raising the profile of the county on a national level.

Stephanie will go on to compete in Miss England in July, the UK’s official entry point to the prestigious Miss World contest.

Sad loss of former councillor Former councillor of East Dorset District Council, Ray Dudman, had died. In paying tribute at the annual council meeting, Cllr Derek Burt said: “It is with great sadness that we received the news of the recent death of former councillor, Ray Dudman, on 5 May 2018. Our thoughts go out to his family at this sad time. Ray Dudman served as a councillor for the St Leonards and St Ives Ward from 1999 until 2015. He was an active member of many committees during his years as a councillor and he was also chairman of East Dorset District Council in 2008/09.�

Silent Soldier vandalised Within 48 hours of being installed by Ferndown Town Council, a Silent Soldier was deliberately bent off its legs and maliciously destroyed beyond repair in broad daylight.

The installation is one of 10, which have been put in significant places around the town in support of the Royal British Legion campaign. The figures have had to be concreted into the ground in a bid to stop people stealing or vandalising them. Sadly, in this instance, the vandal(s) determination caused irreparable damage.

The vandalised figure was on the junction of Dudsbury Avenue and New Road in West Parley.

Silent Soldiers are appearing all over the country to commemorate the centenary of the end of WW1. The silhouettes are symbolic of the 1.1 million British and Empire servicemen and women who died during the war – which ended in November 1918. The figures also represent those who returned home, but whose lives were

never to be the same again.

Funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust to purchase up to 10 silhouettes is available.

Charities, schools, places of worship and community organisations who commit to holding a self-funded event to bring the local community together can apply until 30 June 2018.

A taste of what’s to come Neetan Kathuria (Pedals Cycles)

Local companies and organisations came out in support of the inaugural Ferndown Chamber of Commerce business breakfast that took place on 26 April.

Held at Ferndown Forest Golf Club, the meeting started at 7.30am and was attended by over 30 businesses from the town.

A new venture for the chamber, the business breakfast was a chance for companies to meet Ferndown Chamber’s executive committee members, network and build new and stronger relationships in the Ferndown business community.

Guests were treated to complimentary food and drink and a talk by the chamber president, Tom Clark, who set out his vision for the next two years. This included his aim of having free wifi throughout the town for anyone to use.

He said that Ferndown is seen as a cut-through town, however, this shouldn’t be viewed as a negative, but instead as a positive and the drive should be to get people to stop in the town as they pass through. If this can be achieved it would have a dramatic effect on the current footfall in the town.

There were also talks from chamber treasurer Tony Brown of Y-Not Finance, who sponsored the event, and a talk from chamber marketing secretary Suzanne Lovell of Meridian Air Con. Those in attendance felt the breakfast was a great idea and they are looking forward to the next one on 26 June with special guest Ian Girling, CEO Dorset Chamber Commerce and Industry.

Barrington extension announced A project to refurbish and extend the Barrington Centre Café in Ferndown has been announced by Ferndown Town Council.

The project will provide improved facilities and enable a wider range of entertainment and leisure activities to be held at the centre.

Cllr Mike Parkes from Ferndown Town Council, said, “The Barrington Centre is at the heart of the community and as one of the occupants of the building, the town council can see the great potential of the site, which this project will help to bring forward.”

As well as extensions to the café, the works will include relocating the public toilets in Penny’s Walk. This will help begin the process of opening up the paved area to improve its overall look and feel and enable more community activities to take place.

The proposal forms one of the projects from the Ferndown Town Centre Strategy, which is being progressed by a partnership, led jointly by Ferndown Town Council and East Dorset District Council.

Cllr Mike Dyer, portfolio holder for economy, East Dorset District Council, explained: “The improvements to the Barrington Centre are the first step in delivering the many improvements outlined in the Town Centre Strategy and

we are hopeful that this will be a catalyst for the future. The public were hugely supportive of the strategy, when we carried out consultation on the proposals, and we need to make some visible progress.”

Pramacare, the current leaseholders and operators of the centre are also involved and have welcomed the proposals. They are keen to work with the councils in order that activities are not disrupted when building works commence.

Steve Robinson, chief executive of Pramacare, said, “We love the Barrington and, after a successful year, Prama is excited to be involved in this project, which will directly benefit so many across Ferndown. We are delighted to have been invited to build on the existing strong partnerships forged when the centre faced closure in 2017, and to work with the councils to see these proposed improvements come to life.”

The public will have the opportunity to view the proposals online or at the Barrington this summer.

The project’s steering group is aiming to award the contract for the improvement works in March 2019.

Priory Quarter improvements Christchurch Borough Council has started a range of improvements near the Priory.

The benches in the Covent Walk and Lower Priory Gardens area have been refurbished and the foliage, along the eastern side of Covent Walk, has been cut back.

Over the coming weeks more enhancements will take place, including the replacement of litterbins and refurbishment of lighting.

Works will also begin to remove dying trees and prune others so that the viewpoints between the Castle, The Priory and Constable’s House will be revealed. Improvements to the Priory Car Park and repair of some of the crumbling walls around the Priory are also planned. Later in the year the directional signs will be replaced with a more traditional design.

Christchurch Borough Council is working closely with The Priory and other landowners, with a view to enhancing the bowling green with the possibility of marking the line of the Castle Moat and adding lighting.

There is also a project underway to refurbish the blue plaques in the town and relaunch the popular Millennium Trail, as well as projects in Druitt Gardens to improve signage and interpretation of the site and its history.

Masons help drive Macmillan Caring Locally forward

Macmillan Caring Locally has had a new minibus delivered following a £15,000 donation from the Freemasons.

The charity, which provides palliative care at Christchurch Hospital and in the community, had been fundraising to purchase the vehicle.

Following a public vote held by the Masonic Charitable Foundation, the charity was awarded a grant, which was put towards the bus. Freemasons Leon Whitfield and Rodney Dale joined the Mayor Lawrence Williams and mayoress Elaine at the handover together with staff and volunteers.

A Dip For Mum Milly Godfrey has presented money totalling £2,500 to five charities at the Sure Start Centre, West Howe, in memory of her late mother who died suddenly and tragically in August last year. The money was raised by sponsorship of a dip in the sea in December last year and a charity fun day on the day of the swim held at Branksome Dene Chine.

Milly was joined in the sea by family and friends.

Milly’s father Neil Godfrey thanked helpers, sponsors and supporters saying on the day, “We are all very proud of our wonderful Milly who through the pain of losing her mother has made a positive impact to the lives of others, which is so typically her.”

The charities supported

by donations of £500 were Sure Start West Howe, Fernheath Playcentre, Wessex Heartbeat, Autism Wessex and Poole NICU baby unit, charities close to both Milly and her mum.

Milly’s mum Emmeline was much loved by the many people she came into contact with in her role as a community nursery nurse for the NHS in Kinson and West Howe.

Going to great heights in mum’s memory Meanwhile, Mandy Holford, director of customer services at Echo-U South in Bournemouth, has trekked through the Peruvian Andes along the Inca Trail over six days, reaching an altitude of 4,200m in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity.

The trek, which Mandy began on 21 April, forms just one of a number of challenges that she has set herself since losing her mum to a brain tumour in 2016.

Following a shock diagnosis, Mandy’s mum died just six months later. To commemorate the second anniversary of her passing, Mandy has pledged to raise £10,000.

Mandy said, “Mum’s diagnosis came without warning, we simply weren’t prepared for it. It was so hard to accept that this strong woman had been crushed by a tumour the size of a peach without showing any real symptoms prior to collapsing in the supermarket one day.

“Almost 11,000 people like my mum, are diagnosed each year with a primary brain

tumour, including 500 children and young people; that’s around 30 people every day.

Following mum’s death, I wanted to do something that could help the thousands of families who find themselves in the same position as my family did in 2016.”

Mandy has plenty more fundraising activities planned.

Honoured to be mayor The newly elected mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Lesley Dedman, has a strong history in local government and was first elected to Christchurch Borough Council in 2011.

Cllr Lesley Dedman was sworn in at the annual council meeting in May and on being chosen she said, “It is an honour and privilege to be mayor of this ancient borough, and I look forward to carrying out my duties, attending events and meeting people across the borough.”

She has previously been elected to East Dorset District Council and Ferndown Town Council, where she served as mayor from 2007-2009.

Born and educated in London, Cllr Dedman travelled widely with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the Merchant Navy. Starting married life in Wales, where she ran a small farm, Cllr Dedman has now lived in Dorset for over 30 years.

She is a proud mother of four and grandmother of six. As a former smallholder, animals still figure largely in her life, and she has two Labradors and a black cat – all can be seen accompanying her on walks in Mudeford.

Her nominated charity this year is The Dorset Community Foundation, which raises funds for those most in need across Dorset.

Significant yellow will help Forest Holme During June, Forest Holme will be joining hospices across the UK in celebrating ‘Hospice Awareness Month’ to highlight the role of the hospice movement and the important part they play in the local community.

Forest Holme, which helps to provide end-of-life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, is appealing to people across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck to get involved in fundraising and awareness activities to raise vital funds for the hospice, so that they can continue to care for people in these areas and support their families.

One of the most significant events in June is the annual Tie A Yellow Ribbon, which takes place in the garden of the hospice on Thursday 14 June. Members of the public are invited to Tie a Yellow Ribbon in dedication of a loved one, with the ribbons carrying the name of the person being remembered, who may or may not have attended the hospice.

It can also include a short message. For those who are unable to attend, but would still like to make a dedication, the staff at the hospice will happily make it in their absence.

Refreshments and homemade cake will be available during the day.

The following day, Friday 15 June, Forest Holme celebrates Wear Yellow Day, when they encourage local schools, businesses, community groups and individuals to wear yellow for the day in exchange for a small donation to the hospice. Paul Tucker, fundraising manager at Forest Holme, explains, “Hospice Awareness Month is the ideal time to help us make a real difference to the lives of our patients. There are lots of ways in which you can get involved with Wear Yellow Day, whether at work, school, clubs or at your home.

Some people go all out with face paints and wigs, and others are a bit more discreet choosing to accessorise with yellow scarves, jewellery, hair clips, and badges.”

He continues, “Tie A Yellow Ribbon is a very special date in the hospice calendar and is open to anyone who has lost a loved one and wants to make a dedication in memory of them, irrespective of whether they were at Forest Holme. Knowing that making a donation, which will help other patients and families going through similar experiences, can be a huge comfort for people.”

Ferndown woman’s winning ways Joan Adams has entered virtually every mags4dorset competition since they were introduced 15 years ago.

“We know this because Joan, from Ferndown, hand delivers them,” said editor Janine Pulford.

In those 15 years, Joan has been fortunate to win several prizes, including tickets to an open-air music festival, a book, tickets to the Regent Centre and tickets to see the Chippendales. Now,

aged 84, she has a bit of a chuckle about that prize.

A former secretary at the Metal Box Company in London, she moved to Ferndown on 30 June 2003 and almost immediately sought out the office (then in Ringwood Road, Ferndown) to drop off her first competition entry.

“We thought we should give Joan her moment of fame, because come rain or shine, she has attended our office almost every month to get her entries in on time,” said Janine.

Surprisingly, when Joan visited in May, she made a small confession: “If I can’t work out the answer,” she said with a twinkle in her eyes, “I go to the library and google it!”

The final chairman of East Dorset District Council, Cllr Toni Coombs, took up her role on 14 May, succeeding Cllr Derek Burt, who has held the position for the past year.

Elected to East Dorset District Council in May 1999, this is Toni’s first term as chairman, and she will see out the final year of the council before the formation of the new unitary authorities under the Future Dorset proposals.

Toni, whose grandparents were from Dorset, was born in Christchurch, New Zealand but returned to England at the age of six. She attended grammar school in Tonbridge and then trained as a renal technician at Guys Hospital to become one of the first female technicians in the country.

In 1991 she moved to Verwood and had two children, Matt and Nick. She retrained as a photographer recently and specialises in portraiture and local landscapes.

Cllr Coombs has been chair of Ethical Governance Committee and vice-chair of Planning at East Dorset District Council. She was also elected to Dorset County Council in 2001 and was Cabinet Member for Children from 2005-2015.

Cllr Coombs said, “It is a huge honour to be elected as the final chairman of East Dorset District Council. This council will be leaving a positive and long-lasting legacy for the residents of East Dorset. I look forward to representing the authority within the local community and across the county.”

Her chosen charities are Macmillan Cancer Support and Mosaic Family Support, who support bereaved children and their families. She said she will “endeavour to make this year’s fundraising, for these amazing charities, the best yet.”

Three Seaside Awards for Christchurch beaches Three beaches in Christchurch have again gained Seaside Awards for achieving the highest standards of beach management in 2018.

Avon Beach, Friars Cliff Beach and Highcliffe Beach are the winners of the awards, which are judged and presented by the charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The awards recognise and reward beaches in England that achieve the highest standards of beach management and water quality.

health & FITNESS Trust vows to help end PJ paralysis in national 70-day challenge Staff from the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals (RBCH) say they are working to get patients up, dressed and moving while in hospital, to enhance their dignity and, in many instances, shortening length of stay.

The ‘end PJ paralysis’ movement aims to get patients out of bed and into their own clothes when they are well enough. Research shows being mobile and dressed in one’s own clothes can boost recovery time.

This particular 70-day challenge is part of a national drive to give patients back one million days of their precious time that would otherwise be wasted in bed in hospital. It also coincides with the 70th anniversary of the NHS. To raise awareness of the campaign, and to get relatives to encourage their loved ones to be dressed, staff from Team RBCH have been wearing their own, or hospital pyjamas. This has highlighted how much more dignified it is for patients to be wearing their own clothes.

People’s Medicine, commented, “Staff from across the Trust have really embraced this campaign.

We kicked off the first of the 70 days with many staff wearing their pyjamas – some even wore their PJs to run training or host meetings.

“We find that patients wearing pyjamas often feel more unwell and have a slower recovery than they might otherwise and we as caregivers perceived them differently, too. This is why it’s so important we get patients up and dressed whenever possible so they can get home and back to normality.

“If you have friends or family in hospital, please offer to bring their clothes in and take any dirty clothes home. You could also encourage them to get active while in our care – you’ll be helping them more than you know.”

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging local people to consider the safety of friends and neighbours.

It follows the TV programme, 999 What’s Your Emergency, that highlighted isolation issues and the service is renewing its request to the public to look in on friends and neighbours they feel might be at risk, and not just from fire.

Safe and Well manager Vikki Thomas said, “We continue to encourage the public to be community spirited and consider the well-being and safety of their neighbours and friends. You will find that, just by living next door to someone, you know their routines quite well. So if you haven’t seen them when you would expect to – pop round and just check.”

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue offers free ‘Safe and Well’ visits to those most at risk in the community.

Vikki said, “We’d like to visit you in your home, at a convenient time, to see what we can do together to make you safer. We can also have a conversation around improving your health and well-being. The service will fit free smoke alarms where required and offer advice to make you and your family safer and healthier in your home.”

RBH leads the way in new cancer diagnosis target The Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH) is leading the way on a new cancer target from referral to diagnosis.

RBH has been working with NHS England and four other trusts across the country on a trial to progress patients’ waiting time from initial referral to cancer diagnosis in 28 days, less than half of the current national target of 62 days.

Since the trial has been running, over 2,000 local people have benefited from faster diagnoses. A diagnosis can involve a number of tests – in some cases more than 10 tests need to be carried out to get

the required information.

The Cancer Information Team involved in the Faster Diagnosis Standard ran the initial trial on lung, urology and colorectal cancers.

The team now has the job of rolling out the same standard to all other cancer disciplines and is one of two trusts nationally to do so. The Cancer Information Team at RBH is also training other trusts in Wessex and as far afield as Newcastle on the logistics of the new target that will eventually

become the national target.

Rianna McLean, senior cancer information analyst at RBH, said, “Setting up the new 28-day target has been a lot of hard work but it’s so worth it, knowing the difference it makes to our patients who are understandably anxious to get their diagnoses. And the improvements are showing beyond the initial test areas as patients in other areas, neurology for example, are getting faster diagnoses too.”

Why did I become a care professional?

I have been a Care Professional for 10 years. The reason I came into to care is because I enjoy taking care of people, encouraging and supporting them to live healthy and independent lives. Working in care is rewarding where your job truly has an impact on someone’s life. Quite often you are the only person they see and making them feel valued, important and respected is a crucial aspect of providing care. Bringing a smile and knowing that you have made a difference to someone who is often alone, gives you a sense of job satisfaction that is incomparable to an office-based role. It’s this personal sense of care that I love the most. Everyone’s different and in care you must treat everyone individually with the dignity and respect they deserve.

What does the job involve?

The role of a care professional is varied, sometimes starting from 7am helping someone to get up and dressed, to taking someone out shopping. During meal times, you can be involved in helping to prepare meals and tidying up afterwards. At Bluebird Care we ensure that we provide adequate time for a visit, as well as travelling between visits, so that we don’t rush and are able to engage with our customers, allowing us to get to know them more personally.

How important is it to have continuity?

Continuity of care allows us to be more effective in our job as it allows us to develop honest and open relationships where our customers feel safe and valued. Getting to know your customer is important, as it’s easier to notice if they are not feeling well and would benefit from a visit to the doctor. If necessary, I will contact the doctor and family. At the end of my day, I know that I have helped people to remain independent and healthy, whilst living in their own homes for as long as possible, making me feel valued as a person, too.

What skills are required?

Whilst qualifications are important, attitude is the most crucial part to being a good care professional. Being compassionate, sociable and enjoying working with people are vital to the role. While it is a highly rewarding and worthwhile job, the skills to make a good care professional mean it’s not for everyone. You have to love the job and be dedicated to it as you have such an important impact on the life of a person.

New age kurling is extremely popular Brendoncare Clubs recently held their inter-clubs kurling competition and are very pleased to announce that a team from the Wimborne Wednesday kurling club won this year’s trophy!

Teams from Brendoncare clubs from across Hampshire and Dorset came together for this popular event at Lyndhurst Community Centre last month, all vying to win the coveted title.

The heats were closely contested but the clear winners in the final were those representing the Wimborne Wednesday club, who normally meet at the Community Learning & Resource Centre on King Street in Wimborne every week from 10.30am-12noon.

Members there enjoy a warm welcome, a friendly (and sometimes competitive!) game of kurling and a chance to catch up with friends over a cup of something. For those who can’t meet on Wednesdays, there is also a kurling club at the same venue and same time, on Mondays.

New age kurling is extremely popular amongst Brendoncare clubs.

Based on the Olympic sport of ice curling, this is a fun and popular indoor version, suitable for all. Children are missing out on eye tests New research by SeeAbility, the national learning disability and sight loss charity, suggests that thousands of children with learning disabilities in the South West are missing out on vital eye tests and eyecare despite being 28 times more likely to have a serious sight problem than other children.

Around 9,000 children attend special schools in the South West, including the majority of children with severe learning disabilities or autism. SeeAbility’s study indicates that up to half of these children are likely to have a problem with their vision, yet alarmingly an estimated 3,900 children will have never received any eye care.

This means thousands of children who desperately need glasses are going without, many suffering extremely poor vision without anyone knowing about it, impacting on their ability to learn, play and socialise. While others with more serious eye conditions are being deprived of sight-saving treatment.

SeeAbility is calling on NHS England to make wide reforms to community eye care for children and adults with learning disabilities and introduce adjusted

eye tests in special schools.

SeeAbility has supported over 1,200 school children across England, by providing adjusted eye tests and collecting data over a four-year period.

Data for Dorset shows of 680 learning-disabled pupils, 297 are estimated to have had no eyecare.

For Bournemouth there are 423, with 185 receiving no eyecare and in Poole a total of 328, and143 without eyecare.

All children in England are entitled to have a free annual

NHS eye test but children with learning disabilities are often unable to access or cope with standard eye tests.

It costs around £135 for SeeAbility to provide an adjusted eye test and glasses in a special school. The charity is doing this on standard NHS funding of £21.31 per eye test and subsidising the rest of the cost of its service through fundraising.

30-years of helping residents Bournemouth’s Careline service is celebrating 30 years of helping vulnerable residents remain independent in their own home.

Bournemouth Careline is a telecare service that offers 24/7-access to help residents at home and is available to anyone within the BH postcode area. The service enables a resident to have an alarm at home and a trained member of staff will be on hand to ensure appropriate help is arranged. They can also provides a range of equipment including fall detectors, heat and flood sensors and medication reminders.

To mark the special anniversary, Bournemouth Careline’s longest customer, Kinson resident, Margaret Reeder, aged 98 was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Councillor Robert Lawton, Cabinet Member for Housing.

Mrs Reeder, who has a Careline alarm and has been signed up to the service for the last 26 years, said, “After an operation, I went blind in 1992. Having the alarm has given me the confidence to know that friends are there when I need them at the touch of a button.”

The very long arm of the law!

Top of the League Wheelchair Rugby The Dorset Destroyers Wheelchair Rugby Club, based in Poole, smashed their way to the top of their league table on 5 May in the newly formed sport of Wheelchair Rugby 5s.

They played at Stoke Mandeville Stadium against four other teams in the first weekend of three.

Their first game against Northampton Saints, was the first match of the day and very first match of the new League of Wheelchair Rugby 5s, so it was all about settling nerves and starting strong. The Destroyers’ line up included Ben Steele, gold and bronze medallist from the Invictus Games, Paul Sutherland and Nick Coombs cofounders of the Destroyers.

After an end-to-end game, the final score was 27-14 in favour of the Destroyers – a magnificent start. The next highoctane match was against local rivals The Solent Sharks and the tension was palpable as tries were scored at both ends.

Something needed to happen to break the deadlock.

Sue Coombs, coach of the Destroyers explains, “Sometimes you just need to mark out one opponent, stifle his play and frustrate him, so we did just that and took control of the match.” Soon the tries were coming in and the Dorset Destroyers came out winners at 24–13.

The third game saw the team playing against Ospreys from Swansea who had some big players. But with two wins under their belt, the Destroyers had a bit of confidence. Even so, Ben Steele, team captain for the day said, “We could never afford to be complacent, if an opponent smells complacency they will go for your jugular.” Dorset turned the pressure up and won 23–8.

In the final game Woodbridge Warriors tried to spoil the Destroyer’s record, but with a strong back line, the Dorset team slowly turned the game around to win 17–10.

Sue Coombs said, “Being a new team to Wheelchair Rugby in general, we are surrounded by clubs who are well established, such as the Solent Sharks, Stoke Mandeville Maulers, Leicester Tigers and West Country Hawks so the pressure is more on them to win, as they know the set-up more than most and they’ve been through this sort of thing before. We, on the other hand, have the pressure of just wanting to win, put on by ourselves.”

Dorset Destroyers headed the ‘conference blue’ table with 12 points and the Stoke Mandeville Maulers headed the ‘conference red’ table, also with 12 points.

Ferndown Jitsu success To celebrate Ferndown Jitsu Club’s juniors’ success at the National Judo Championships in Birmingham on 21 April, Sensei Hatamoto John Hanrahan was invited to Ferndown for a presentation evening. John was the former chairman of the club for 16 years before handing over to Erica Lea in 2016. He had the pleasure of presenting the National Junior Judo shield to Sensei Jordan Lea. The juniors scooped an amazing nine trophies at the championships and John said, “I am still very proud of the Jitsu club’s new achievements and its great to see them still bringing home national trophies to Ferndown and Dorset.”

Medals went to: William Bowden – gold (new national champion) and silver; Joshua Hodgson – silver x 2; Riley Bradshaw – silver and medal; Lucas Norman-Hardiman – bronze and special award; Mark Mills – bronze x 2. Ferndown also won the National Junior ratio shield 2018.

You may have recently heard about a case that Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service took to court involving animal cruelty.

A Somerset farmer and haulier took some cattle to a Dorset slaughterhouse in the middle of the night when no staff were present. When the farmer tried to unload them into a holding pen one of the cows was down on the floor in the back of the lorry and was unable to stand up.

He first tried to encourage it to stand but soon lost his temper and kicked, punched and pulled its tail violently.

Fortunately, this was all captured on CCTV and trading standards could start an investigation which soon revealed a whole range of other offences the farmer had committed.

Just at the point trading standard officers were ready to charge him, he decided to leave the UK for America with no intention of returning.

What he hadn’t accounted for was the fact that the investigating officer had recently retired from the Metropolitan Police after a career of tracking down international money launderers.

The officer managed to not only track down the farmer to a hotel in Arizona and revoke his ESTA tourist visa but also arranged an arrest warrant for when the farmer returned to the UK, which was duly served.

The farmer eventually pleaded guilty and was fined, as well as being ordered to pay the prosecution costs. Furthermore, as his American ESTA visa was revoked he will never be allowed to visit the USA again To report something to trading standards, call the citizens advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06.

Five 5km peaks in 8 days Colehill man, Will Watson, will be tackling the route to Everest Base Camp in September 2018. All funds raised will be donated to the HSP Support Group, a registered charity that works closely with people who suffer from hereditary spastic paraplegia (disability to the lower limbs).

Will’s route will take him over some of the most arduous and hostile terrain on Earth. A rugby youth coach with Wimborne RFC, and high ropes instructor at Go Ape, Moors Valley, Will has already successfully ascended Mt Kilimanjaro, hiked the Himalayan and Dolomite mountain ranges, competed in charity boxing matches for Wimborne ABC/Hit Fitness and has been studying and training for the past two years in preparation for joining the Royal Navy.

Disappointment not a big issue Sixth form students from Ringwood School presented a cheque to representatives from the Big Issue Foundation for £5,210.90 on 26 April.

Ringwood School is the only school in the UK that has taken part in The Big Issue Foundation’s Big London Night Walk since 2010. Unfortunately this year the walk in March coincided with the ‘Beast from the East’ that hit the UK, resulting in cancellation of the event. Whilst the students were disappointed, they resolved to honour their donations to the charity and have taken part in a number of other fundraising activities.

Lost words come back

A campaign to provide a copy of the book The Lost Words

by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris to every infant, primary and junior school in Dorset has been launched.

By using Crowdfunder, a local conservationist Richard Bradford aims to use the book to re-introduce lost words from the natural world.

The book takes 20 of the words that have been falling out of use amongst children - such as adder, kingfisher and bramble and brings them back to life, through the magical paintings of Jackie Morris and the ‘spell poems’ of Robert Macfarlane.

Cllr Daryl Turner, Dorset County Council cabinet member for natural and built environment, said, “The countryside is important to all of us and making sure that our young people learn about nature is essential for future generations.”

The target is £3,600 which will mean that 180 schools will be given a copy of the book and also an accompanying resource called ‘An Explorer’s Guide to The Lost Words’, that will help teachers get the most out of the book.

Don’t get trapped in the web

Pupils and staff of Hillside Community First School in Verwood had great fun by attending school with crazy hair recently. This was prompted by three members of staff: Mrs Kelly Riley, reception teacher, Mrs Debbie Tarrant, school secretary and Mrs Sandra Coates, teaching assistant, wanting to raise money for Julia’s House, the children’s hospice based in Dorset and Wiltshire.

The ladies are taking part in the Jurassic Coast Trek on 10 June and thought that the children would love to go crazy for the day, whilst supporting such a worthwhile cause. The children were delighted to have raised £203.77.

Colehill First School held an E-Safety event inviting parents to see the pupils’ computer work and hear the methods the school is using to ensure safety online.

The school dedicated a week to raising e-safety awareness starting with a coding and e-safety workshop for parents and carers.

The Wimborne Academy Trust school hosted the two-hour event in which the adults could observe their children using coding to create simple web programmes.

After witnessing their wannabe Bill Gates in action, the parents were introduced to the different websites, apps and games that children commonly use – and what they need to be aware of to keep their children ‘e-safe’.

CEO of Wimborne Academy Trust, Liz West, said, “…Our

children were born into a world where so much can be accessed and achieved through the Internet.

Modern technology has opened up so many more opportunities and it is very important that we not only teach our pupils to be tech savvy but just as importantly to be safe online.”

Headteacher, Andrew Turrall, added, “A key message for our learners is that respect online is just as important as respect in our school and local communities.

“Our children have really embraced what they have learned and the importance of not only keeping themselves safe online but to look out for others as well.

“Schools, parents and carers all play a key role in teaching our children and it’s essential that we all keep up to speed in this everchanging world.”

Maintaining a good grade at The Bourne Academy The Bourne Academy has maintained its ‘GOOD’ grade following the latest short Ofsted Inspection.

Principal, Mark Avoth, said, “We were delighted with the content of the report which contained many tremendous compliments and some excellent feedback to help us progress even further.”

Ofsted commented, ‘Senior leaders lead the school with integrity and purpose. Staff at the school work hard to promote tolerance and respect.

It was also noted that the Academy ‘Engages well with parents and the local community, understanding the importance of reaching out to secure support for different aspects of the school’s work. As a result, and with good reason, the school is held in high regard by parents and local employers.’

Moving on to the Academy’s relatively new Sixth Form, the report noted that ‘Students in the sixth form are progressing well… Students receive high-quality information, advice and guidance in order to make informed, appropriate decisions about their next steps.’

Independently, The Bourne Academy has also been recognised for its excellent work in careers and is now one of the top three performing schools in the UK for the Gatsby Good Career Guidance, the gold standard of careers guidance measurement.

Pioneering new school for Bournemouth The Department of Education (DfE) has announced that the Aspirations Academies Trust will open a new school on the former law courts/police station site near the Lansdowne, Bournemouth.

The Livingstone Academy Bournemouth, when full, will have 1,370 pupils.

It will open in partnership with, and be named after, Ian Livingstone CBE, who co-founded the very successful retail company Games Workshop.

The school will partner the new Livingstone Academy West London. It will be admitting Year 7 pupils in September 2019. Applications for places should be made through Bournemouth council, with information available online from 1 September 2018.

The vision is to deliver an authentic education for the 21st century for children from the age of 4 to 19. The academy will develop a curriculum working closely with digital industries.

Leader of Bournemouth Borough Council, Councillor John Beesley, said, “This is an exciting development for Bournemouth. The school’s vision and link to the digital industry sits very well with Lansdowne, which is fast becoming the digital hub of the town. We look forward to working with the school as they progress their plans for the site.”

Following an inspection by Ofsted of Okeford Fitzpaine Primary School in March, the school’s category has been downgraded from ‘good’ to ‘inadequate’ and has been put into special measures.

Okeford Fitzpaine Primary is a smaller-than-average primary school and educates 36 children. Its Christian values are at the heart of everyday school life and its links with St Andrew’s church in the village are strong.

Although inspectors were impressed with the passion and hard work of the school’s headteacher and the new leadership team, overall, they found the school to be inadequate. Some of their specific findings included that: pupils’ progress in reading, writing and maths has been slow; a new leadership team and teachers have begun to rebuild the school, but it has not been enough to address the school’s endemic weaknesses; the rapid improvement that was required for the school to function as it should has not been implemented.

New headteacher, Mrs Peters said, “Having come to this role with fresh eyes and having appraised myself of the situation in full, I am satisfied that the outcome of the Inspection is an accurate reflection of our current position.

We have been open and

honest throughout the process, because it is important that Ofsted could see where we are making good progress but also what our weaknesses are.

“It is reassuring to hear that changes that were introduced by my predecessor in September regarding safeguarding and pupils’ personal development are on the right tracks. It is a shame these measures couldn’t make enough progress in time for the inspection.

“I would like to reassure all parents and carers that

our pupils, their education and their well-being are our top priority. Of course, this rating is not where we want to be and we recognise there is work to be done. We will be putting all our efforts into getting the basics right, which will become the good foundations for change.”

North Dorset Teaching School Alliance will be supporting and overseeing Okeford Fitzpaine’s improvement plan, along with the Diocese, ensuring the actions of the plan are undertaken.

SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE PLASTIC FREE FERNDOWN UPDATE As Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) Plastic Free Ferndown gathers momentum, Jane Stacey of Pretty Soul Hair and Beauty has confirmed that her salon in the town is scaling down on single use plastic when using the foiling method for hairdressing.

At JD Wetherspoons’ Nightjar, the use of plastic straws was stopped in January this year.

Instead, Wetherspoons are using paper, biodegradable ones. They are doing this at all their 100 pubs throughout the UK and say this single act will eliminate the use of 70 million plastic straws.

Another big player, Tesco, has replaced two-layer plastic meat trays with single layer plastic, making 84 million trays easier to recycle and removing 96 tonnes of plastic. Significant changes to the packaging of their wet wipes has resulted in a 20% material reduction and removal of 57 tonnes of plastic, a material saving that is enough to make over 10 million more packs.

However, this surely needs to be eliminated rather than reduced.

Tesco claims that over 78% of the packaging on all its ‘own brand’ products is recyclable, depending on if the local authority collect it. A summary of Tesco efforts to date, and plans for the future, can be found at www.tescoplc.com/little-helpsplan/foundations/packaging/.

After years of competing against cheaper milk in plastic containers, and having to resort to delivering milk ‘dressed in plastic’ to please customers who wanted cheaper doorstep deliveries, B&B Dairies in Ringwood has confirmed that the reusable glass bottle is regaining its foothold.

Manager of B&B Dairies, Andrew Thomas, who has been in the business for 42 years told Janine that on his Lymington round in 1976 “nearly every household had milk delivered in glass bottles.” Since then, there have been great changes.

The advent of cheaper supermarket milk in plastic bottles, took the lion’s share of milk supply away from the dairies and many closed down.

B&B in Ringwood (a combination of Boltons Dairy in Ferndown and Burroughs Dairy in Ringwood) is one of the survivors. To remain competitive, they had to introduce plastic bottles for their customers, but always offered the more environmentally friendly glass option.

Other changes are that their deliveries start at 1am because working folk like their milk delivered before 8.30am, and deliveries to a specific area are not made every day. B&B rounds are split into two areas. One will

receive deliveries on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The milk, Andrew explained, is bottled in Southampton by Pensworth Dairy, a company that distributes over 120 million pints of milk annually.

It’s heartening that the ratio of glass bottles to plastic delivered

by B&B Dairies is now 35% and Andrew says this is on the rise.

“You pay slightly more for glass than ‘poly’,” he says.

“Plastic is the cheaper option, but if more people make the switch, then hopefully the price of a pint in a glass bottle will come down.”

As we spoke, B&B Dairies had just heard that one of their care home customers in Ringwood was switching their deliveries from plastic to glass bottles.

Tops stop the use of single use baby wipes Tops Day Nurseries have recently started making their own baby wipes for face/hand wiping instead of using commercially bought wipes. This is due to the baby wipes available on the market all containing one-use plastic.

The family of 20 day nurseries have also found a number of irritants and chemicals in the commercially bought baby wipes, which can aggravate delicate skin; whereas more natural, organic products can do the same job without those factors and they are cheaper.

Overflows of sewage into rivers during floods cause piles of wipes to build up in rivers, which then may drift into the sea, causing widespread pollution. This is one of the main reasons Tops Day Nurseries have now stopped buying baby wipes – until manufacturers start making them without plastic.

Cheryl Hadland, managing director of Tops Day Nurseries said, “Several senior nursery staff with babies have been using homemade baby wipes for years. We have now piloted DIY baby wipes in our nurseries and have decided to do this permanently. After introducing the glitter ban in 2017, stopping the use of single use plastics in the nurseries and changing from plastic to glass milk bottles, to name just a few of our sustainable efforts, we are always looking for ways to improve our practice in an environmentally friendly way.”

Hot on the Trail for Cheese and chilli

GET READY FOR SUMMER WITH A REFRESHING MINT AND CUCUMBER MOJITO

You can almost taste this mint and cucumber mojito when you look at the image.

The refreshing cocktail recipe has been created by Haskins Garden Centres, (one of which is at Longham in Ferndown), where gardeners are being encouraged to make the most of their home-grown mint this summer.

Alasdair Urquhart, plant advisor at Haskins Garden Centres, commented, “Making your own mojito with home-grown ingredients is simple and rewarding.

Even if you haven’t had time to grow your own mint this year, you can still follow our step-by-step recipe.”

INGREDIENTS (MAKES 1 MOJITO) • • • • •

6 fresh mint leaves ¼ cucumber Ice (crushed) 20ml lime juice 40ml soda water

15ml elderflower cordial 30ml apple juice 1 mint sprig (to garnish) 2 wedges of lime (to garnish)

Place your ice into a sealable freezer bag and use a rolling pin to crush into small chunks.

Remove the ice from the freezer bag and place into the glass, then stir.

Add the soda water to the glass.

To garnish, place the mint sprig on top of the drink, near the edge.

As a finishing touch, place one lime wedge into the drink and the other on the rim of the glass.

Slice the cucumber into thin slices and place in the bottom of the glass.

For those looking to grow their own mint, Alasdair has the following recommendations: “Mint is one of those herbs that is best bought as a young plant and we recommend planting it into either a large pot or bottomless bucket in the ground. Regular watering is required, particularly in hot weather, to keep the herb at its best. We also recommend regularly picking the mint, to help keep it compact and bushy.”

r of Lette the h mont Value for our money and the need to change the face of residential home care My children’s generation refer to us retirees as having lived in a ‘golden age’ with all of us supposedly in receipt of index-linked pensions.

There are of course disparities in the pensions individuals receive, but that is a subject in itself.

My contention is that pension or no pension there is an inevitability that all of us who own our homes, will have to sell to pay for our care when we are no longer able to look after ourselves.

Currently residential care costs around £1,000 a week. With inflation, what will that £12,000 a year increase to in 10 to 15 years?

Simple arithmetic tells me that many properties will never reach sufficient value to cover the costs of the care needed (my own included).

The government is aware of the costs but any solution will demand care to be paid for while we are alive, or a debt against our estate when we die.

So the increasing costs of care certainly need to be addressed.

I, and many of my contemporaries, are already looking at the model residential homes follow at present. For a start, much of the residential care is provided in buildings that formerly were large private houses, which have been converted, and perhaps had a conservatory or annexe added on. Many lack the facilities available (or the atmosphere) that we, as an ageing population, have grown to expect in a fast moving technological society.

The model used in a vast majority of residential care homes, (and indeed in purpose-built residential homes), is to provide a lounge to be shared by the residents; a shared dining-room and a bedroom; and shared bathrooms.

The one lounge is often full of high-rise seats lined up against the walls with some more chairs in the middle of the room. It is used by all, irrespective of their individual health issues. There may be a television for residents to argue over who watches what.

Many wouldn’t want to accept any of that in a hotel, let alone in a final ‘home’. I find it interesting that some elderly people choose to go on ‘back-to-back’ cruises where they can live in a degree of luxury, whilst having all of their needs met inclusive of medical care.

Having visited residential care homes, it has become clear to me that the care assistants do an excellent job in multi-tasking and what I write here is no criticism of them whatsoever.

I find it difficult to accept that people in this day and age, who are in need of care, enter archaic institutions that barely acknowledges their lifestyle – only their care needs.

An example of this is the lack of use of IT equipment, let alone the provision of HiFi sound systems or video conferencing.

The latter could enable residents to see live concerts, engage in lectures and much more.

Many entering care homes now would have been familiar with up-to-date technology, therefore, I’m sure there could be more use of every-day IT that is stimulating, but I’m not an IT-buff. However I do suspect residents may simply have been given the password to provide them with the Internet.

Do the elderly of this country not deserve something more inventive?

Let’s look at some figures, because it is clear there will be even more people (like myself) who are going to expect more value for our money. We should also consider that dementia and Alzheimer’s may become diseases of the past in 20 years time, so the elderly may be actively seeking innovative designs of residential homes, rather than accepting the existing models.

The Official National Statistics (ONS) states that in 2017 the population of this country stood at 65.5 million and it is estimated to rise to 74 million by 2039.

Indeed the population of our country is growing but not through an increase in births.

20% of the current population is 65 and over.

Improved health care has created those statistics. Apparently in 2016 for every 1,000 people aged between 16–64 of working age, there were 285 people aged over 65 years of age.

I am led to understand that providing care to someone to stay in their own home is not always successful and assessments lead to a wait for a place in a care home. It appears that there are not enough care homes currently, yet the statistics clearly demonstrate that demand will increase for such.

Currently in the UK, pockets of purposebuilt retirement villages as well as senior housing facilities exist, allowing people to remain in a home of their own, receiving care when needed and perhaps participating in a ‘village’ community where the leisure and social activities are more of a match to what individuals are used to. Sheltered housing still exists in a similar way. However such models of care sites are either few or are very expensive. They are certainly outnumbered by the number of residential homes in every town.

I am sure that many of the concerns of my age-group are that, while residential homes were a quick-fix-solution at best following the NHS and Community Care Act 1990, now 30 years on, the nature of the care facilities has not changed. In the year 2039 (or less), when we may need such care, they will not be fit for the purpose for my age group. I suspect that is the case already, as we are part of an ageing population that have been engaged in everything from travelling the world; practising Pilates; are competent in the use of laptops and mobile phones and whatever advances in science and IT will have been made by then.

As I sign-off, an 85-year-old friend has just texted me to say she is out ballroom dancing, while two other friends I know in their late70s, are singing in their respective choirs this evening. One has been on a U3A walk today with me and we did five miles over fields amongst a group of people ranging from late 50s to 75. Need I say more.

My partner and ‘official photographer’ Paul, and I, were invited onboard Condor Ferries for a day-trip to Guernsey recently.

It was an early start on the 7.30am Condor Liberation from Poole.

We’d travelled as foot passengers and on arrival, had been assigned seats in the front of the vessel in the upgraded and comfortable Ocean Plus section with a splendid view.

Once the Liberation was underway we sought out the café for breakfast. Now hungry, we opted for a full English with coffee then relaxed, and took advantage of the free Wi-Fi. Afterwards, we wandered out on deck for some sun and fresh air and felt like we were on holiday from the moment the ship set sail.

Around three hours from departure we arrived at St Peter Port. The town looked magnificent as we cruised into port with Castle Cornet to our left, and the marina to our right, with St Peter Port parish church directly in front.

We disembarked and made our way to the castle. This has wonderful views, several museums, attractive small gardens, genuine cannons, a café and a shop.

We loved the Maritime Museum with its Neolithic axes, Roman artefacts, maritime paintings and the Guernsey lifeboat display. The gun placements outside, erected

by German forces in the Second World War brought things sharply into focus. We just couldn’t imagine how awful life must have been for

the residents under occupation.

This has been depicted in a book and just-released film you may have heard of called The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society.

Wandering into the town, we stopped first at the Boathouse at Victoria Pier. It’s a bistro-type cafébar and we sat outside with a cool drink in the sunshine watching the yachts in the harbour. It was just like being abroad, and yet, some aspects of the island are so totally British it makes you feel at home.

But, in contrast, we could hear some French accents at the same time.

The buildings in St Peter Port are among a conglomeration of little streets. There are lots of recognisable British stores, then chic boutiques, shops selling Guernsey sweaters and a number of fine jewellery shops. Guernsey is known as a tax haven for the rich. There is no VAT, so luxury

goods are invariably cheaper.

While exploring one street, we came across a little park known as the Sunken Garden. It is a place for quiet contemplation among the lawns and flowers. Nearby were a string of mopeds, motorbikes and scooters, which reminded me of Italy.

If we’d had more time, I would have liked to visit Hauteville House (currently closed for repairs) – the home of the exiled Victor Hugo who wrote Les Misérables, then the Guernsey tapestry and Candie Gardens. But they will have to wait until our next planned visit, as will the other attractions and the rest of the beautiful island that we would like to explore. This had been a wonderful taster, though. Our threehour visit was just long enough before we re-boarded the vessel for the return journey.

Just like on our outward journey, the Condor staff were

friendly and everything was handled efficiently. We were now ready for a late lunch and I chose the Piri-Piri chicken and rice followed by a tea, while Paul opted for a pre-meal gin and tonic with a ham and cheese Panini and chips.

We chilled for a while and then headed to the onboard Duty-Free shop. Somehow, we ended up with a new watch, two litre bottles of gin and six bottles of wine. The prices were so good, we just couldn’t resist.

We docked ahead of time and headed back to the car and home agreeing wholeheartedly that we’d had an excellent day.

Dippy’s Dorchester stay breaks records!

More than doubling initial predictions, Dorset County Museum’s special exhibit Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure in Dorchester has delighted 153,189 visitors in just under three months.

The early May bank holiday was the last opportunity to visit the impressive 21-metre-long and 4-metrehigh diplodocus skeleton in Dorset before he ventured to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.

Never seen before on display outside London since he arrived at the Natural History Museum in 1905, Dorset County Museum was the first

Sam’s success Motorcycle-racer Sam Sunderland from Poole has been awarded the prestigious Segrave Trophy by The Royal Automobile Club.

Acknowledging Sam Sunderland’s success, the citation for the award read: ‘For being the first Briton to win a Dakar Rally crown by winning the motorcycle category in 2017’.

Speaking at the presentation lunch, Tom Purves, chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, said, “Lady Segrave commissioned the trophy in 1930, soon after her husband, Sir Henry Segrave, died after breaking the water speed record on Lake Windermere. It was her wish that the trophy would celebrate British nationals who demonstrated outstanding skill, courage and initiative – the spirit of adventure – whether on land, sea or in the air and we are delighted to award

the trophy to Sam Sunderland.”

He continued, “It is our honour to pay tribute to Sam’s remarkable achievement in what is considered the world’s toughest endurance race. Sam’s bravery, speed, navigation skills and adaption to temperatures, terrain and altitude are all the qualities that Lady Segrave wished to celebrate and Sir Henry would have admired.”

In 2017, Sam Sunderland made history as the first British competitor to win the motorcyle class of the famous Dakar Rally. The rally began in Asuncion, Paraguay and ran through the vast and rugged terrain of Bolivia and Argentina.

The Red Bull KTM factory team rider took the lead on the fifth of

12 stages and maintained it to the bitter end, completing the final Argentinian stage 32 minutes ahead of his nearest competitor, and fellow team-mate Matthias Walkner, to secure the title and deliver KTM its 16th straight Dakar victory.

Upon receiving the trophy, Sam said, “I’m absolutely honoured to receive this prestigious award from the Royal Automobile Club. I am so proud to have my name alongside so many of my racing heroes like John Surtees, Barry Sheene and Joey Dunlop. I have huge respect for everyone who has been a part of the Trophy’s history.”

Sam Sunderland made his Dakar debut in 2012, riding a

Honda, after winning the UAE National Baja Championship in 2010 and 2011. He was forced to retire on the third stage due to mechanical failure and was unable to compete in 2013 after breaking both wrists whilst training for the event. Riding for the factory Honda team in 2014, Sunderland became the first British rider to win a stage of the Dakar since John Deacon in 1998 but again was forced to retire with mechanical problems. Later that year, he signed to the factory KTM team, winning two stages of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and coming second in the Morocco Rally. Sam went on to win the Morocco rally in 2015 and won the Qatar Sealine rally in 2016.

Beaulieu’s ‘Simply Ford’ biggest yet As many as 1,787 Fords took over the grounds of the National Motor Museum for Beaulieu’s biggest Simply Ford yet as 3,080 participants enjoyed baking sunshine at the rally.

The impressive display covered the Beaulieu parkland on Sunday 6 May and smashed last year’s rally total of 1,500 cars.

At the heart of the display was an anniversary line-up of Ford Escorts in honour of the legendary model’s 50th year. Each of the Escort’s six generations was represented by Mk1s used daily, pristine family saloons, vans, cabriolets and rally cars. Factory models including the Escort GT, RS, XR3i and Cosworth also turned heads.

Throughout the day, show-goers voted for their favourite Ford of the show in the People’s Choice Award. Fittingly, the prize went to a special 1979 Ford Escort RS2000, owned by Martin and Rita Lewis, from Witney in Oxfordshire.

Personalised examples of the popular Ford Focus, Mondeo and Fiesta were well represented, many featuring bespoke paintwork, uprated engines and lowered suspension. Much-loved modern-day Fords featured heavily in the packed club stands, including strong showings from ST220 Enthusiasts, the Dorset RS Owners Club and Midlands ST Owners Club.

Granada Nutz showcased a range of classic Granadas, while the Ford Society club stand featured a mixture of old and new Fords.

An unusual sight was a Cortina Lotus Mk2, which was originally used as a police car on the Isle of Wight. Equally eye-catching were two Model T-based hot rods with powerful V8 engines. Rare sights were a top of the range 1980s Ford Sierra Ghia and third-generation American Ford Thunderbird, while Ford dealer Hendy Ford showed a selection of brand new performance Focuses and Mustangs.

Can a helicopter flight cure the fear of flying?

Protecting the coast As this magazine went to print, work was due to be completed on installing six new groynes along the Soutbourne-end of Bournemouth seafront as part of the council’s on-going beach management scheme.

A total of 12 groynes will be replaced along the stretch of beach from west of St Catherine’s Path in Southbourne to the end of the promenade toward Hengistbury Head.

Works to install the next six will begin in the autumn.

Construction started in December 2015 with the replacing of 320,000 cubic metres of sand between Bournemouth Pier and Southbourne and 10 timber groynes. With the completion of the third year of the project, a total of 24 new groynes will have been put in to provide coastal protection in this part of Poole Bay. Anthony Kirby, engineering and major contracts manager for Bournemouth Council, said, “Thank you to residents and visitors to Southbourne beach for their patience and understanding while these essential works have taken place along the seafront. We are pleased to confirm that we are on track with this latest phase of works and we will be completed in time for the start of the summer season.”

Bournemouth airport-based Bliss Aviation has launched a programme designed to help people with a fear of flying overcome their phobia with a helicopter flight.

Gary Ellson, Bliss Aviation’s chief executive and a helicopter flying instructor, has introduced the initiative after realising that by using a helicopter, their pilots can offer reassurance that they can land immediately should the ‘flightphobic’ passenger become overstressed by the experience.

“Fear of flying can also be part of other phobias, including agoraphobia and claustrophobia, so by using a helicopter with its great views and unrestricted environment, compared to that of a tube-like aircraft, we also have an advantage,” says Gary Ellson.

A Fear of Flight session starts with a briefing by the pilot who

explains how the helicopter flies and will also ensure that the customer realises that helicopters can actually glide if an engine fails.

With the assurance that the pilot will initially hover a few feet off the ground for a few minutes, the helicopter is then loaded and started. After everyone has adjusted to the feeling of hovering, the helicopter will then take off with the passengers assured that they can return immediately to the ground on the airport if they become too anxious or distressed.

“By coordinating with air traffic control at Bournemouth we can operate away from runways and not have to spend time positioning

to land if our passengers require it,” assures Gary. “But, if everyone on board is happy, we then go for a short 15-minute flight to view Bournemouth’s beautiful coastline.”

One businesswoman, Gemma Murphy who is MD of View HR Ltd, said that she was very reluctant to fly in helicopters. “This package has helped and I even enjoyed the opportunity to have a go at controlling the aircraft after relaxing...”
