The year was nineteen seventy-eight and I recall starting a new job with a small family business that sold clearance art paper to magazine printers in the London area. There were only six people working for the company plus two enormous Alsatian dogs that barked incessantly and frequently left unmentionables outside the warehouse doors.

The postman who was just as scared of the dogs as me, knocked on the office window rather than risk fingers through the letter box. He was greeted by snarling monsters clawing at the glass. He insisted on leaving the post on the windowsill and who could blame him?

The owner managed the business in an antiquated way and was a man in his midfifties, tall, thin, with his hair parted in the middle. It wasn’t long before I realised he was someone who lacked communication skills and regarded his customers as an interruption to the television programmes he constantly watched in his office.

On my first day, dressed in my shiny mohair suit with flared trousers and kipper tie, I edged my way into the cramped office as the boss held onto the dogs that looked intent on ripping off my head. I was to learn too late, to my dismay, that being too close to these beasts and wearing decent clothing was unwise. Globules of dribble, saliva growing into thicker hanging shapes, inevitably found a way onto to you.

I remember being introduced to colleagues, one of whom I later went on to call the ‘Fisherman’. He asked if I liked fishing and on hearing my negative reply soon lost interest. The only time I borrowed his long, plastic ruler, I observed that the first two inches had been snapped off the end from him using it as a fly swatter - the yellowy black remnants of a squashed fly remained. I vowed to bring in my own ruler next time.

paintwork reading ‘Please Clean Me’ finger-painted on the rear doors. The first driver was a red head with a crazy haircut and bad breath. The other was a barrel of a man who said the same thing to me each time he came in, ‘Still here then.’

The badly lit room that served as a sales office was small, dingy and poorly decorated. Devoid of normal office furniture, we sat on kitchen chairs with desks that looked as if they’d come from a Victorian rummage sale.

There were no calculators only a readyreckoner and slide rule on the owner’s desk. This office only used hand written records and two telephones that shared one line. I had to wait for a colleague to finish their call before making mine. I became part of their strange world that involved little conversation and lots of sport on the dusty old Radio Rentals TV. Lunch was included in the deal and Beryl, a large woman in her sixties, turned up every day at twelve o’clock to bash around in the kitchen. In all the heat of the glorious summer weather, she always wore her blue anorak. There would be a hissing sound and I feared she’d not lit the gas properly.

Her take on hygiene was interesting too.

Soup bowls with food runs down the sides dissolved any hunger pangs I may have had. She must have been the only person in the world capable of scorching a boiled egg. On one occasion my colleagues were sitting at the cramped kitchen table staring at three bread rolls. They all took one and I sat there looking at the empty plate. The fisherman said, ‘Where’s Mark’s one?’

Beryl sighed, ‘I must have thrown it in the bin.’

I cringed as her fat arm entered the ‘bin of a thousand sins’ to retrieve the plastic wrapper. In triumph she pointed to my roll.

The day that Beryl started a small fire in the kitchen remains etched in my mind. As she prepared lunch, she inadvertently left the tea towel on the toaster which started

to smoulder. The boss was furious and Beryl was asked to leave. As she already had on her blue anorak, she was soon gone.

There were times when the boss sulked, mainly when I sold the entirety of an item’s stock. He’d say, ‘What if a customer comes on tomorrow wanting a packet of the blue paper and we have nothing to sell them?’

When I arrived home that evening my wife asked, ‘Did you have a good day?’

‘Mmm, no. I’ve been in trouble.’

‘Why, what have you done?’

‘Seems like I sold too much.’

I stayed three years with this small setup but an opportunity arose to work for another larger paper group that had smart offices and sales commission for the staff. I was suitably impressed with the computers for processing orders and stock control. However, over time, I discovered that the new organisation I worked for was too large and we were forever lost in a sea of takeovers and constant changes.

But I never lost sight of my roots and those early days with my old company.

It was madness and fun all rolled into a ball. Gone were the days when the toast was burning (literally) or the time the boss encouraged me to help him ‘lick and stick’ his ‘Green Shield Stamps’ into their books.

On the day the boss’s father, a gentleman in his late eighties, was given the job of sticking the stamps on the mail prior to posting, he went through forty pounds of stamps (a lot in those days) applying them all over the surfaces of the envelopes, even covering the addresses. We certainly had some colourful mail that day.

Back in those working days there was little urgency; life was calmer and the only firefighting was dealing with Beryl’s kitchen mishaps. However, what a shock I received on entering the real world of work. Oh, well, at least I have some amusing memories.

WARWICK’S FAMILY HISTORY

I cannot say that family history beyond my grandfathers has particularly interested me. However, all of forty years ago I was rummaging through a box of old sheet music in an antiquarian bookshop in Ashley Rd, Boscombe, long since closed down.

To my surprise I found the manuscript of a violin sonata by Friedrich Wilheim RUST republished by Peters in 1926, but long since out of print. It made me curious, so I trolled through various dictionaries of musicians and found him listed as a Court Composer to the Duke of Saxony. I played through the whole piece, and it was certainly written in that period. Frankly, it was pleasant but distinctly unmemorable. He died in 1796.

My grandfather on dad’s side was born in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

My father was born in Bournemouth in the 1920s. Legend has it that a branch of the family emigrated to England shortly after the Franco Prussian War in 1870. The rest remained in Germany. One member was somewhat bizarrely named OTTO VON GROSSBURGER who had married Heidi,

one of the Rust daughters. His life was as bizarre as his name. He left his wife and family and became a monk in a silent order. Already a qualified chemist, the monastery used his talents to good effect as he became an expert in distilling brandy.

However, a batch he was making to a new secret formula exploded in the cellar causing extensive damage. This was in 1939 and unfortunately the S.S. heard about this and forcibly conscripted him into the Army. While serving on the Russian Front in 1942 the Germans were running desperately short of ammunition. They had plenty of shell cases but were fast running out of explosives for hand grenades. Otto set to work.

Unfortunately, not long after this enterprise began, there was a massive explosion at the garrison where Otto was stationed, and OT as he was fondly known was no more.

There is an interesting postscript to this story. In 1969 the monastery to whom Otto had been attached was in desperate need of money for roof repairs and in digging up the decaying timbers in his former attic, discovered three cases of the much priced vintage brandy of 1938. It went under the hammer at an auction in Dusseldorf in 1970 and was spotted by an eagle eyed MI6 agent who paid the equivalent of £5K for all three cases. In all the ephemera that was sold with it was a tiny little pocket book which seemed to have very little value. It turned out to be Otto’s secret formulas which MI6 had no trouble deciphering. Knowing the world of spying as I do, it would be no surprise if they were not to inject this prized vintage with an undetectable poison for use in the field.

After all who can resist a 1938 brandy.

It would not be too fanciful to speculate that Otto, wearied by the daily scourging’s in the monastery was planning to escape with this cache of brandy as a nice little nest egg for his future. Sadly, fame and fortune of the right sort came too late for Otto.

Learn to Love a List For those of you, like me, who have a lot of thoughts whizzing around all the time I have a fool proof system, one that I have used for many years and one that still works today.

It’s a good old-fashioned list. I love a long list, a short list, in fact, any list is fine, as long as my thoughts are transferred to paper. Some are just random thoughts and some more important. However, whatever the thought, it goes onto my phone.

We live in such overwhelming times and now, more than ever, we are probably spending much more time in our ‘heads’ trying to ‘Keep Calm and Carry on.’

We have around 60,000 thoughts a day, so it pretty much makes sense to get some of those thoughts out of our head.

Once our heads are clearer, we should, in theory, have room for living in the moment and taking stock of the beauty that surrounds us.

The D-Day Story The D-Day Story has an exciting new addition, to better put visitors in the shoes of those who took part in the Normandy Landings. LCT 7074 is the last surviving Landing Craft Tank that took part in the D-Day Landings and is large enough to have carried up to 10 tanks and their crew members at a time.

The vessel arrived off Gold Beach in Normandy late on D-Day, and put its tanks ashore the following morning. It then spent months carrying more tanks, men and supplies across the Channel to help liberate Europe.

LCT 7074’s post war-career was colourful to say the least. It spent time as a nightclub, before sinking in Birkenhead Dock. Then, the National Museum of the Royal Navy stepped in to rescue the landing craft with funding from the National Heritage Memorial Fund for its rescue and the National Lottery Heritage Fund for its restoration. This restoration work wasn’t the only challenge, as LCT 7074 also had to make its way by sea to Southsea, to take its place outside The D-Day Story.

Visitors can learn about the landing craft’s history and the tanks it carried, thanks to interactive touch-screens, video and sound.

On the upper deck be taken back in time, moving through the wheelhouse, officers’ quarters and galley, then it’s up to the bridge and gun deck for stunning views.

Your visit continues inside the museum with ‘Preparations’, as you find out about the planning of D-Day and how those in charge made the crucial decisions around when and where to cross the channel.

Next is ‘D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy’. Here, compelling audio-visual displays show how the day unfolded on each of the beaches and provide an insight into the thoughts on board the landing craft during their epic journey.

The D-Day Story experience takes place in four parts - starting with a visit on board LCT 7074, which is now home to the museum’s Sherman Grizzly and Churchill Crocodile tanks.

Your visit culminates with the spectacular Overlord Embroidery and Legacy Gallery.

The impressive 83-metre long embroidery, longer than the Bayeux Tapestry, was created to commemorate people who took part in D-Day. Hear the Veterans’ personal stories, giving their reflections on their wartime service.

Traditional Andalusian Gazpacho Ingredients (serves 6): 1kg Ripe Tomatoes 1 Green Pepper 1 Cucumber 2 or 3 Cloves of Garlic 220g Extra Virgin Olive Oil 50g Stale Bread 250g Cold Water 5g Salt 50g Sherry Vinegar

Preparation: Chop the tomatoes and green pepper, peel the garlic and cucumber, place in a bowl and add the remaining ingredients: olive oil, water, sherry vinegar and salt.

Blend everything until it has a very fine texture.

Once blended, pass the gazpacho through a sieve, correct the vinegar and salt if necessary.

Place in the fridge to cool well.

Serve with pieces of some of the vegetables used or with cubes of toasted bread.

The World’s Oldest Hawker Hurricane

This August (25th) marks the 80th anniversary of when this Hawker Hurricane L1592 left RAF Christchurch, for No 15 Maintenance Unit at RAF Wroughton, after ten months of active service with the Special Duty Flight (SDF), in order for it to be relegated to advanced pilot training.

What makes this aircraft special is that it now hangs from the ceiling in the Flight Gallery at the Science Museum, South Kensington. It is the world’s oldest Hawker Hurricane, the 46th built in the first batch from Hawkers at Brooklands, built with fabric covered wings rather than metal.

The photo of L1592, taken rather unusually from above, shows the aircraft flown by FL/ Lt Douglas Rayment of the SDF in October 1940. Sadly FL/Lt Rayment was killed on 17th July 1941 with the SDF. This aircraft had previously been in action against the Luftwaffe over Dunkirk and was damaged on 1st June 1940 and again during the Battle of Britain when it crash landed

on 18th August 1940 before undergoing another rebuild before the SDF received it.

Nevertheless, it still had the starboard wing from another Hurricane, which is evident in the camouflage paint scheme.

The SDF used L1592 to escort and defend radar trials aircraft but, it also carried out local area defence. One notable interception with the SDF during the Battle of Britain was on 15th October 1940 when L1592 took off after the air raid siren went off and the lone L1592 found it closing on a formation of 24 Messerschmitt Bf 109s that the pilot, P/O Clifford Wright had mistaken for Spitfires!

He dived away just in time.

After the Battle of Britain officially ended, the Luftwaffe still mounted raids on the area and L1592 was still in action on 10th November 1940 when FL/ Lt Douglas Rayment attacked a Dornier Do 215 in a formation of twenty aircraft, perhaps the last of many scrapes it had with the enemy. Therefore, it is quite amazing that it still exists for all to see!

There is a shortage of rental property in this area!

We are receiving many calls and email enquiries every day, especially for properties in Mudeford & West Christchurch.

Most tenants are looking for long term rentals, anything from 12 months to 10 years, and on average our tenants in 3-bedroom houses stay a little over 8 years.

Renting a property out can give a good income, certainly more than putting money in the bank and, the asset is there, it doesn’t go away until you sell it.

Are you in a position to become a landlord, have you inherited a property, do you have money in the bank earning pitiful interest?

In early 2009 I was approached by a chap looking to invest in a buy-to- let property; at the time he was looking to invest c£230,000.

We sat down together and shortlisted 5 properties from local agents’ details, he then went away to make appointments to view these properties. I then accompanied him on all 5 viewings to give my input as to what each property would return as far as rental income. During that day we settled on 1 house; an extended 3 bedroom semi off of Comet Way in Mudeford priced at £230,000.

Over the next weeks the negotiations culminated in an agreement to buy the house at £220,000 and about 5 weeks later he had the keys. There was no mortgage required to buy, the money came from an inheritance.

Obviously there have been costs – c£18,000 So what do these figures show?

They show that the owner has returned approximately £125,000 (rent less costs) on his original investment – about 50% and he now has an asset worth £127,500 more than he paid for it, an overall “profit” of c£252,500, – 114%!

I don’t know what he did with the income but, if he saved it for his retirement, that combined with the sale proceeds could mean that he now has almost £500,000 available
