Living Well | Winter 2025

Page 1

Welcome

Can you believe we’ve reached our 14th edition? It feels like only yesterday we launched back in Autumn 2019! Although we took an unavoidable pause in 2021 during the pandemic, we were delighted to relaunch in 2022 — and what a journey it’s been since then.

Over the years, Living Well has not only grown in size — from 32 to 40 pages — but also in importance to our local community. Each edition brings more events, more stories, and more people coming together to share experiences. Our ever-popular What’s On section continues to expand, filled with wonderful activities and gatherings from across the area.

Thanks to the growing enthusiasm and contributions from our readers, we’re thrilled to announce that this edition marks another milestone — 48 pages! Inside, you’ll find plenty to enjoy, including a festive Christmas section (turn to pages 12-16 for all the details).

This issue features inspiring updates from our recent fundraising events — Bourne2Sing and the 12k Memory Walk in Ferndown — along with articles highlighting the benefits of Art4Dementia, insights from Bournemouth University’s Tomato Project on the role of nutrition in Dementia Care, and a helpful Winter Tips guide to keep you warm and save money during the colder months.

As always, we’d love to hear from you. If you’d like to contribute to future editions — whether it’s an event, story, photograph, or article — please get in touch at community@ fcdouch.co.uk. Your experiences and ideas help keep this magazine vibrant and relevant for everyone.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Promedica24 Dorset & Hampshire for their continued financial support and commitment to the magazine. We also extend our gratitude to all advertisers and the many local organisations and businesses who kindly stock Living Well, helping to ensure everyone can enjoy a free copy in their own town or village.

Together, you’re helping us build an inclusive, informed, and connected community — and we couldn’t do it without you. Best Regards

Wimborne Area NeighbourCar (WAN)

Wimborne Area NeighbourCar (WAN) is a volunteer transport service coordinated by PramaLife for people living in and around the Wimborne area aged 50+

It is provided by a team of local volunteer drivers, who use their own cars to enable members of the local community who do not have access to transport to get to and from medical and other essential appointments, as well as social activities. This is a vital and affordable service (There is a yearly fee, and donations are given for each trip) which enables older adults within the local community to continue to live full lives independently. Our multi-award-winning service is unique in as far as our lovely drivers will pick up passengers, including walking aids, help them into the cars and then transport them to a variety of appointments. Our drivers will wait for the passengers at the appointment venue and will then transport them,

Bourne 2 Sing

On Saturday 13th September Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town in partnership with Cherry Tree Nursery (Plants and Minds) held a charity concert to raise funds and were superbly entertained to an afternoon of popular songs for easy listening by the Bourne 2 Sing Male Voice Choir.

Bourne2Sing” has established itself as one of the area’s leading Male Voice Choirs and we were certainly not disappointed with an array of songs that were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The event, which was kindly hosted by The

Parish of West Parley All Saints & St Mark’s church was, as always, very popular and well supported with the addition of a cream tea at the interval.

Our sincere thanks go out to the choir, along with all of our sponsors including Rodda’s cream & Tiptree jam, Parley Place Care Home - part of Barchester, A E Jolliffe & Son Funeral Directors - part of the Douch Family, and volunteers, who with their invaluable support, helped us raise over £850.00, which will be split between FDFT and Cherry Tree Nursery.

Ferndown Takes Strides for Dementia Awareness

In September, members of the Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town Committee joined forces with local residents and care home members to take part in a heartfelt 12k Memory Walk through the town.

September marks the Alzheimer’s Society’s annual Memory Walk movement, and the committee felt it was the perfect time to bring this special event to Ferndown — a town known for its community spirit and compassion.

The walk wove its way through the town, stopping at many of the wonderful dementia-friendly businesses that make up the committee, including Cherry Tree Nursery, Parley Place Care Home, Ferndown Manor, A E Jolliffe and Sons, Ferndown Community Support, Bridgewater Care, Kings Park Care Home, Fernhill Care Home, and finishing at the Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town allotment plot. Other committee members, such as Promedica24, also joined in to show their support. Together, the walkers raised over £500, which will go directly towards supporting people living with

Wimborne’s Memory Walk

The Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk was launched in 2002 on the nearest Sunday to Alzheimer’s Day, the 21st September.

There are many Memory Walks arranged by the Alzheimer’s Society all over the UK, and in the past 12 years, we have walked in Poole Park and Bournemouth Seafront. There is also the option to create your own walk, and the Minster Strollers now walk along the River Stour from Merley to Canford. It is a free-to-enter sponsored event with a fundraising target for each group of walkers. It is usually fairly short and wheelchair accessible – ours is 3.5 miles.

The aim is for communities to come together for the cause, and support those living with dementia.

dementia and their carers within the local community. But more than just a fundraising event, the walk was a celebration of awareness — shining a light on the support available in Ferndown and showcasing how local businesses can unite to make a meaningful difference.

The day was a resounding success, filled with smiles, stories, and a shared sense of purpose. Plans are already underway to make the Memory Walk an annual event, so if you’d like to take part or support next year’s walk — we’d love to hear from you!

For contact details see page 44

The participants walk in honour of a loved one, and some choose to wear a label naming those they are remembering. We always enjoy a reflective moment half way along the walk, when names are read out as well as the Dementia Prayer.

Over the three years we have been walking locally, our fundraising has progressed from £250, through £555 last year, to a magnificent £860 this year.

The best local team result this year was four thousand pounds plus, so there is still work to do!

“Not a lot” seems to be the standard response, but that is not the case. You might be surprised to learn that whatever your circumstance, you could benefit.

Community Fridges

Ever tried a new flavour of yoghurt, which you don’t like, but it is a pack of four. What do you do with the other three? You can drop them off at a Community Fridge, these are FREE to everyone, accessible by all. The amount and type of food will vary from day to day, and is dependent on perishable waste. So, don’t be afraid of picking up something when you drop off those nasty yoghurts!

Community Larders

A membership programme that provides access to surplus groceries (store cupboard items and fruit and

vegetables) at heavily subsidised rates. Organisations often work closely with FareShare to distribute surplus food from supermarkets and businesses. Membership is open to EVERYONE, usually within a certain postcode catchment. Sometimes there is a charge, or a minimum spend is required.

Foodbanks

Provide emergency food (3-5 days’ worth) to people who find themselves in crisis, often via a referral system.

Community Food Suppliers / Social Supermarkets

Available for people in crisis within the area of the provision. Registration is required and it is for those on low or no incomes. Open more frequently providing perishable foods and often used daily.

Wimborne Community Centre

Prevent Food Waste!

We collect excess food from local supermarkets to fill ‘Sybil’ the Community Fridge.

Helping to reduce food waste and FREE for everyone. We also offer frozen home cooked meals available by request. Eat in or takeaway. Just ask a member of staff.

Open Monday – Thursday between 9am – 3pm and Friday’s from 9am – 12noon.

Wimborne Community Centre is part of the Dorset Community Action Charity No. 1060910

Stay Safe and Keep Warm This Winter

As winter draws near and the days grow shorter, keeping safe, warm, and comfortable becomes more important than ever. With a few simple steps, you can stay cosy, reduce heating costs, and look out for friends and neighbours who might need a helping hand.

Layer Up and Stay Warm

Start with the basics — dressing in several layers helps trap heat more effectively than one thick layer. Choose warm shoes or boots with non-slip soles to prevent falls, especially on icy paths. Around the home, cosy blankets, thermal socks, and even a woolly hat can make all the difference — up to 30% of body heat can be lost through the head.

Keep Your Home Safe and Efficient

Have your heating system serviced each year by a qualified engineer to ensure it’s working safely and efficiently.

Never block air vents, and if you use wood-burning, coal, or gas heaters, make sure there’s proper ventilation.

Draught-proof doors and windows using sealant strips or heavy curtains — draught excluders are a simple, affordable solution. Use rugs on bare floors to help retain heat and close off rooms you’re not using to keep warmth where you need it most.

Set your heating timer to warm rooms before you wake up or return home.

If your home uses electric blankets, have them serviced every three years, and make sure you know where your main stopcock is in case pipes freeze and burst during a cold snap. Keeping a mixture of salt and sand handy for icy paths can also help prevent slips.

Eat Well and Stay Connected

Good nutrition and social connection both play a vital role in keeping healthy through winter.

Cook and eat hot meals such as soups, stews, and porridge. Batch cooking can save both time and energy, giving you ready-made meals on colder days.

Warm drinks like tea, hot chocolate, or lemon water can help keep your body temperature steady.

Avoid alcohol before heading outdoors — it may make you feel warm, but it actually lowers your core body temperature. Why not make mealtimes social? Take turns cooking with friends or neighbours — you’ll share the warmth, conversation, and energy costs.

A Few Extra Tips

• Use hot water bottles or microwaveable heat packs for quick comfort.

• Wear socks to bed to help regulate your body temperature.

• Consider fitting grab rails if you have steps outside your home.

• Keep active, even indoors — gentle movement boosts circulation and warmth.

• Ensure you’re claiming all financial support available to help with heating bills.

Carers Conversation

CARERS CORNER WINTER 2025

Welcome to the corner of the magazine for carers.

As a carer you have so much to juggle: medications, meals, activities, and then all the bills, especially if you’re not used to dealing with the money side of things. There is help out there. Organisations such as Citizens’ Advice, Age UK Bournemouth, Poole and East Dorset and Faithworks CMA offer free financial guidance in leaflets or in person. The UK government website offers information on eligibility for state benefits and other financial matters: https://www.gov.uk/check-benefits-financial-support

It might be time for you to future-proof access to your finances by setting up Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) with someone you trust. This does not have to be a family member, it can be a close friend or even a solicitor, if you prefer to have someone totally independent but trustworthy. Again, the UK government website has information, and there are lots of helpful leaflets from the organisations mentioned above, or just call in at a local solicitor’s office and ask for their leaflets.

https://www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney

What can be difficult is having that conversation. Sometimes people shy away from thinking about losing the ability to sign their own documents or to understand what their signature might commit them to. You might have friends who have settled their LPAs and would talk about their experience, or your children might discuss the topic from their point of view. Once it’s done, you can relax and send those misgivings and ‘what-ifs’ packing.

In this issue, look out for the Carers Section in What’s On. Take time just for you, think about keeping contact with friends over the winter months, take advantage of the pre-Christmas concerts and craft fairs and enjoy a break, when you can. Make sure you have the right wet-weather gear for going a walk or pottering in the garden, even in the rain. Maybe plant some bulbs now to have a cheerful display in the spring. Just 10 minutes under a cuddly throw with a crossword and a cuppa can be the respite you need. Take time – you’re worth it!

TOMATO PROJECT 2025 – Eating Well with Dementia

What is the TOMATO Project? It sounds like a gardening scheme. In fact, the catchy name TOMATO is taken from the subtitle: ‘nuTritiOn and deMentia AT hOme’

Everyone needs to have good nutrition. Keeping hydrated is important for everyone’s health, including mental health and ability to concentrate. Eating enough protein and avoiding foods which have a negative impact on blood sugar, bone strength and heart health is important for all age groups, but especially children and the elderly.

The TOMATO Project is a research project recently undertaken by Bournemouth University in conjunction with local care providers and people with dementia and their carers. The aim has been to find out precisely how nutrition patterns change as dementia progresses and to devise ways of encouraging person-centred nutritional care both in the home and in residential care.

People with dementia often find that their food preferences change; their liking for sweet or savoury food might become the opposite of their previous taste, for example. They might lose interest in meals and need persuading to eat, or object to foods being mixed together and insist on their being kept separate on the plate. People forget to drink, risking dehydration, which can lead to mental confusion or an infection of the urinary tract (UTI). As people eat less, it can be important to fortify meals with added vitamins or protein.

These issues have been identified and explored in detail by the Project team, and to help carers in the home, as well as those in Care Homes, two easy-to-read guides have been published, accompanied by two pocket-sized handy guides, called ‘Eating and Drinking Well with Dementia at Home’.

These are available from BU. More about the project and its development can be found at: www.bournemouth.ac.uk/tomato www.bournemouth.ac.uk/nutrition-dementia Other organisations provide support for nutrition as part of dementia care are the Alzheimers Society and AgeUK. https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-support/ living-with-dementia/eating-drinking https://www.ageuk.org.uk/services/informationadvice/guides-and-factsheets/#wellbeing

FERNDOWN DEMENTIA FRIENDLY TOWN

part of Growing Compassionate Communities Registered Charity Number 1176047

Dementia is a disease that can affect anyone at any time, young and old.

The very minimum requirement of the Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town Steering group, is to understand what it is like to live with dementia not only for those diagnosed, but for their carers too, and to try and help make life a little easier, or the services available more accessible.

It is essential to find out more from those with dementia, and their families and carers, about the experiences of living in our community, where they feel supported and where improvements can be made. This feedback can and will direct the actions of the steering group. Please feel free to email me on michaeldeane1@hotmail.com with any comments, concerns or questions you may have.

I am extremely pleased to share with you that throughout 2025 Fernhill Dementia Care Home has chosen FDFT as their Charity of the Year. Fernhill and their team have been fundraising throughout the year and we express our sincere thanks to them ongoing.

WEST MOORS DEMENTIA ACTION GROUP

In July we had a stall at WESTIVAL a large Family Fun Day on Fryer Field, West Moors where we met a lot of people, had good conversations and many children had fun in the Lucky Dip.

It is a delight to see the ART4dementia up and running in West Moors and look forward to meeting more people who would like to have a go at expressing their creative side in 2026.

Coming up is the Christmas Tree Festival at St Martins URC (opposite the Library) 4th - 6th December and always a joy to feast the eyes on so many pretty trees. Full details in What’s On. Also on Saturday 6th December is the annual Carols on the Petwyn

WIMBORNE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

which starts at 6pm, though other fun activities begin before and continue after that. The theme of our tree is Christmas carols and pop songs from ‘our’ youth. approx. 1940’s - 1960’s. Which ones do you remember?

We thank the people and businesses of West Moors for their support through 2025 enabling us to raise awareness of dementia, point people towards support and help and support for carers.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas. Stay warm, safe and well through the winter months.

Wimborne Dementia Friendly Community continues to find resources for people with dementia, their carers and others in our town who benefit from finding new ways to make friends and find day-to-day support.

In July, In Jolly Good Company, friends of WDFC, held a fund-raising afternoon at the Village Hall in Wimborne St Giles, offering teas, plant and cut-flower sales and a raffle. The weather was kind, if a little drizzly at times, and plenty of people came to enjoy tea and cake, often with their dogs. Volunteers from WDFC were able to make contact with people, give out copies of Living Well and other resources and have supportive conversations, just being there to listen

and spreading the word about community events.

In September, members of WDFC took part in Wimborne’s Memory Walk, each walker remembering a loved one and getting sponsors to donate to the Alzheimers’ Society. A magnificent £860 was raised this year (see separate article).

If you have taken part in dementiafriendly activities or know of events taking place, please let us at WDFC and Living Well know, and we will report on them and when possible provide copies to be given away. WDFC can be contacted at wimbornedfcommunity@gmail.com
