Welcome to the Summer edition of our community magazine—our 16th issue—and what a pleasure it is to share it with you.
The Summer Solstice has now passed, and as I write this, we are experiencing a relentless heatwave! I do hope you have all found plenty of creative ways to keep cool and make the most of the sunshine. Across our communities, allotments are overflowing with produce, gardens are bursting with colour, and there is no shortage of outdoor events and activities bringing people together. It is wonderful to see so much life and energy throughout the area.
This 48-page edition is packed, as always, with information about summer events still to come, while also looking ahead to the autumn and early winter months, taking us right through to the end of November. You’ll find details of local groups, activities, and opportunities to get involved throughout the seasons ahead.
Inside, we have included extensive “What’s On” listings featuring welcoming craft groups, creative workshops, sports clubs, and leisure activities suitable for all abilities. We have also highlighted a range of essential support services for carers, recognising the invaluable contribution they make and helping ensure they can access the support, understanding, and community they deserve.
We bring you an update on the many events that took place during Dementia Action Week in May, including the wonderful Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Cake Concert in Ferndown, which was enjoyed by so many.
You’ll also find allotment updates from both Ferndown and the fantastic Wimborne Community Garden. If you haven’t yet paid a visit, I would highly recommend it—it is a truly special community space.
As always, I continue to be inspired by the kindness, dedication, and generosity that exist throughout our local communities. Every volunteer, organiser, participant, and supporter plays a part in making this such a welcoming and caring place to live.

Wimborne Area NeighbourCar (WAN)
Wimborne Area NeighbourCar (WAN) is a volunteer transport service coordinated by PramaLife for people living in and around the Wimborne area aged 50+
It is provided by a team of local volunteer drivers, who use their own cars to enable members of the local community who do not have access to transport to get to and from medical and other essential appointments, as well as social activities. This is a vital and affordable service (There is a yearly fee, and donations are given for each trip) which enables older adults within the local community to continue to live full lives independently. Our multi-award-winning service is unique in as far as our lovely drivers will pick up passengers, including walking aids, help them into the cars and then transport them to a variety of appointments. Our drivers will wait for the passengers at the appointment venue and will then transport them,

COMCA is a voluntary car scheme charity for residents in the Corfe Mullen parish.
COMCA is a locally based charity offering, among other services, a voluntary car scheme for medical appointments (including hospitals, doctors, dentist and optician).

Wimborne Community Garden
Hidden away, right in the middle of Wimborne, is Wimborne Community Garden! It is to be found at the top of School Lane, right next to Redcotts Park and opposite Beaucroft College. It started 4 years ago with the aim of creating a garden which anyone could come and help with to grow a variety of veg and flowers; this produce would then be sent to add to the parcels that are given out at Wimborne Food Bank. We are proud to say we now grow not only for the Food Bank, but also the Allendale Community Kitchen, Beaucroft Café as well as the Community Fridge. The garden has won the RHS South
& South East in Bloom Community Garden award the two years it entered and as the years have gone by, it has developed and flourished and become a place not only filled with lovely, tasty veg and gorgeous flowers but also a lot of laughter and so many friendships.
We are open on a Wednesday morning from 9am – 2pm, Friday afternoon from 2pm4pm and Sunday afternoon from 2pm-4pm and all are welcome either to take part or to sit and enjoy the peace a garden provides.

From Seed to Supper – Growing Together for Our Community
Regular readers of Living Well may remember our much-loved Seed to Larder Project, a wonderful partnership between Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town and Ferndown Community Support (FCS).
Together, we share allotment space at Longham Allotments, where something rather special is growing. With plenty of enthusiasm, a little sunshine, and a lot of hard work from our fantastic volunteers at Ferndown & Parley Rotary, the plots are producing an impressive harvest of fresh fruit and vegetables that are donated directly to the Foodbank at FCS.
This project is a shining example of what can be achieved when local organisations and volunteers come together with a shared purpose: supporting people in our community who need it most.
Hannah Hobbs-Chell, co-founder of FCS and local councillor, says:
“We are blessed with a wonderful team of volunteers and the support of the Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town committee, which includes many local organisations, as well as the Ferndown & Parley Rotary, who diligently grow produce to support our work at the food bank and those most vulnerable in our area. This ongoing collaborative project has provided nutritious and inspiring produce both for offering to clients directly, as well as for use in our soups and meals that we cook for clients.”
The growing season is already off to a productive start. Rotary volunteer Sally reports that two boxes of fresh produce have already been delivered to the Foodbank, including spring onions, beetroot, potatoes, courgettes, carrots and broad beans. And there is plenty more to look forward to. Growing steadily in the allotments are runner beans,
French beans, squash, tomatoes, turnips, potatoes and cucumbers, all destined to help stock food parcels and provide ingredients for freshly prepared meals.
A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone involved in this project. Whether digging, planting, watering, harvesting or coordinating deliveries, every contribution helps turn seeds into nourishment, kindness and community spirit.
We look forward to sharing more harvest updates in future editions!

PramaLife Carers’ Rights Day Event
This year Carers Rights Day will take place on Thursday 19 November. Every day, 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member or a friend – many of whom don’t see themselves as carers, often unaware of their legal rights and what they’re entitled to in terms of support and benefits. Do you look after a family member, spouse, or friend? Would you like to discover what support is available to you?
On 19th November 2026, PramaLife will be once again supporting Carers locally by hosting their annual Carers Rights Day. The event will be held at
the Allendale Centre, Wimborne between 9-12:30pm, and is a great opportunity for Carers to come and speak to over 30 different organisations and gain free advice and support on a number of different topics.
Free refreshments will be available as well as an activities room to use, with qualified activities coordinators, so your loved ones can relax and enjoy a cuppa whilst you look around the event.
In addition to the usual support and freebies, this year there will be a Magic Table on display with demonstrations provided by a volunteer. Staff from Help & Care Carers Support Dorset, will also be on hand to provide event information, and guiding people
to the services and organisations that they are looking for.

Introducing Community SWITCH: Smarter, Joined-Up Care for East Dorset
Exciting changes are unfolding in local healthcare. First launched by Crane Valley Primary Care Network (PCN) in 2024, the flagship initiative Community SWITCH has gone from strength to strength, breaking down traditional silos between the NHS, local authorities, and the voluntary sector.
The initiative complements existing healthcare provision, focusing on a holistic, person-centred “What matters to you?” approach, not merely the traditional “What is the matter with you?”
Recognising that wellbeing is about more than just medicine, the model links patients directly to local activities and self-help opportunities tailored to their non-clinical needs.
At its heart is a trustworthy, easy-to-navigate directory of resources, co-created and peer-
reviewed by Social Prescribing and Wellbeing teams, and Patient Representatives.
Since 2025, the programme has hosted themed events bringing the public, voluntary, and charitable sectors together to share local knowledge. These events focus on practical ways to support carers and people living with specific needs, such as dementia, memory loss, or loneliness.
Now, given their shared geography, Crane Valley PCN and Wimborne & Ferndown PCN are officially partnering. Together, they are expanding the Community SWITCH model to ensure everyone across our neighbouring borders receives the same consistent, high-quality, joined-up care. What is social prescribing?
Social prescribing, also sometimes known as community referral, is a means of enabling health professionals to refer to a range of local, non-clinical services. The referrals generally, but not exclusively, come from professionals working in primary care settings, for example, GPs or practice nurses.

CARERS CORNER SUMMER 2026
Welcome to the corner which offers carers a bit of support and signposts them to further help. Sometimes carers fail to enjoy their time off because of anxiety about their loved one and the possibility of ‘something happening’. This is such a pity because time to relax and recharge the batteries is important: a burnt-out carer is less able to fulfil the role.
It might help to take a moment to list the ‘somethings’ which you fear might happen and then put measures in place to cope with them. For example, if you fear your loved one falling, make sure furniture is placed to avoid tripping over it. Consider having a call button, smartwatch or pendant which calls a careline.
If the fear is of your loved one being unable to prepare food, leave a simple meal ready, enough to keep them going until you return. Ready-meals

aren’t the same as home-cooked, but anyone can heat them up and they are designed to be nutritionally balanced. If you freeze them, make sure they don’t require defrosting overnight! It might be time to consider having a hot meal delivered once a week, say, to alleviate that worry.
With a bit of advance thinking and putting simple measures in place, you can go and relax with peace of mind. Enjoy!

If you feel at risk of being overwhelmed, ask your GP about Social Prescribing/ Community Switch (See P41). A coffee and a chat with someone sympathetic can be a real boost. Take care of yourself, too!

Embrace the power of plants to enhance mental wellbeing
We know that gardening is good for physical health, but did you know it can work wonders for improving mental wellbeing, too?
At mental health charity Plants and Minds, our team members – adults with life-impacting mental health conditions – reap the benefits of horticultural therapy every week at Cherry Tree Nursery in Bournemouth and Chestnut Nursery in Poole.
Nurturing plants outdoors in the fresh air, surrounded by nature in a friendly, supportive community, gives us social connection and a sense of purpose. It’s proven to assist with mindfulness, helping people to focus, while supporting rehabilitation from trauma.
You don’t have to be on a horticultural therapy programme, however, to enjoy the benefits of gardening. Growing a few pots of edibles such as tomatoes, peppers or strawberries is incredibly rewarding, and you’ll benefit from vitamin-packed, organic produce that tastes superior to anything from a supermarket.
Growing flowers from a bygone era can rekindle happy childhood memories from a slower, gentler world. Think of plants that were staples of our grandparents’ gardens: fabulously scented roses and cottage garden classics such as sweet peas, foxgloves, hollyhocks, delphiniums, lupins and pinks.
When it comes to plants that help us to relax and unwind, ornamental grasses take some beating. Wafting gently in the breeze, architectural grasses create an instant prairie-style effect – their soothing motion has to be seen to be believed!
Finally, sensory gardening is unbeatable for lifting spirits. Choose lilies or jasmine that fill the air with perfume, or plants with aromatic
foliage such as rosemary and lavender.

Dementia is a disease that can affect anyone at any time, young and old.
The very minimum requirement of the Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town Steering group, is to understand what it is like to live with dementia not only for those diagnosed, but for their carers too, and to try and help make life a little easier, or the services available more accessible.
It is essential to gather more information from individuals with dementia, their families, and caregivers about their experiences of living in our community, including where they feel supported and where improvements can be made. It’s been a very busy Spring for the Ferndown Steering Group with lots of activity within the town. A Radio interview, a treasure hunt walk, judging the best window display in town for Dementia Action Week, and hosting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s cake concert afternoon capped off the event. Many, many thanks to all those involved and to everyone who supported these activities.

WEST MOORS DEMENTIA ACTION GROUP
Working to become a Dementia Friendly Community
It was good to meet and chat with some of our community in West Moors during Dementia Awareness Week in May. Of the two mornings we had a stall on the main street, the first had to be aborted due to weather conditions, but the second was considerably improved and successful.
On Saturday 11th July we again had a stall at WESTIVAL, the Family Fun Day in West Moors for people of all ages. 12-4pm on Fryer Field. Always a great opportunity to meet our local community and share with them the support available in our area. There have been a few changes in the West Moors

Wimborne continues to be a caring town for people with dementia and the Wimborne Dementia Friendly Community continues to raise awareness of the needs of people with dementia and their carers in a wide variety of ways.
In May, Dementia Awareness training was delivered by Sue Warr of Prama to two groups associated with local churches. The pastoral assistants throughout the Wimborne Deanery of the Church of England took part in training and are now able to spread the word about dementia-friendly attitudes and systems throughout churches from Ferndown to Verwood and Corfe Mullen to the villages beyond Wimborne. Wimborne Minster also hosted Sue Warr in training volunteers at the church. We would encourage any local group which wants to know more about the needs of people with dementia to contact WDFC about training.
Also in May, the Allendale Centre held an Open Day
to highlight its own work, in its 50th Anniversary year, and to welcome numerous community groups which support local people. WDFC was there and members gave out information booklets and pointed enquirers towards further help. We proudly displayed our new feather flag – look out for its forget-me-not logo.
The following week was Dementia Action Week. Many thanks go to the MED for once again filling its windows with a splendid display of forget-me-nots. The crocheted topper was placed on the post-box in the Square and WDFC set up a stall at the Allendale Friday market, once again raising awareness and assisting people who have someone with dementia in the family. We find people so grateful for all the help which is out there, once they know, and of course this magazine is given out as a great source of information and advice.
