Christmas Lights EXTRAVAGANZA

Well, 2016 has been a pretty busy year for us in the Chamber, mostly with negotiations to get the Friday market situated in Penny’s Walk.

At the time of writing, things are looking much more positive and we hope the market will be back to full strength soon. We thank you all for continuing to support the market.

The Christmas Lights Switch On is another priority and will soon be upon us.

We are delighted to welcome back the Gugge 2000 band this year, they really know how to get the party started! We have entertainment through out the afternoon from 12pm. To find out more, check through this programme. Another regular visitor, the ever-popular Townsends Amusements, will also be back. They will be bringing along rides for the kids and seasonal sweets and snacks.

This year we are planning on having a Christmas market supplied by Southern Market Traders who organise your Friday market. This is a great opportunity to pick some different Christmas presents. There will be stalls offering a variety of different things so come a long and grab a bargain!

Santa will be in his grotto in Penny’s Walk at various times throughout the afternoon.

Gugge 2000 will do the countdown for the switching on of the Christmas lights by our mayor, Cllr Mike Parkes. You’ll also notice more Christmas lights than in previous years.

As always, mince pies and mulled wine will be available from the Chamber’s stall where you can also purchase your raffle tickets for your chance to win one of our now famous hampers!

So put 26th November in your diary and come along to enjoy the festivities as we start the run up to Christmas, we’re looking forward to seeing you.

Christmas Market FERNDOWN’S CHRISTMAS MARKET PROMISES TO BE THE BEST EVER A festive market bursting with Yuletide gifts and Christmas goodies will be provided by Southern Market Traders. For the first time their brightly striped stalls will be lining Penny’s Walk where you can wander at leisure without worrying about the traffic.

Add lots of local stalls and charity stalls into the mix as well as amusements for the kids and children’s rides and you’ll realise this year will be one not to miss.

There will be hot food and drinks to warm you up. A hog roast, roasted chestnuts, hot dogs, candy floss, mince pies and mulled wine will help get you in the festive mood.

And of course the shops will be open throughout the day and no doubt they will be sharing a little Christmas spirit around the town.

There is even free car parking within a short walk.

We are GUGGE 2000 (but we started in 1998!) and we are the first Guggenmusik band in the UK. If you are wondering how to pronounce our name, it’s googie as in boogie! If you know us better as ‘the black & yellow band’ or ‘the bumblebee band’, ‘the wasp band’ etc, that’s cool too!

What is Guggenmusik?

Guggenmusik translates as ‘happy music’ and certainly seems to bring the best out of those who perform it and those who are entertained by it. The bands are generally about 40-strong and combine large percussion sections of bass drums, and trolley mounted kit drums, with even larger brass sections of trumpets, trombones, euphoniums and sousaphones.

The music they play is mostly popular music (chart hits etc) but the performance is as much about visual impact as it is about the sound. The first thing that catches the eye is the colourful costumes influenced by the traditions of carnival, often with masks and a political or topical theme. Originally associated with winter carnivals, as Guggenmusik has evolved, it has taken on its own life and has become a focal point of carnivals with bands taking centre stage and performing wellpolished ‘concerts’ for their audiences.

Guggenmusik bands of today give

concerts that are not far removed from rock concerts, with all the passion, enthusiasm, and spectacle that goes with them, not to mention their own fans that follow them around.

Studio one

Student Choir The wonderful STUDIO ONE STUDENT CHOIR will be performing in Ferndown on 26 November at the switch on of the Christmas tree lights.

Under the guidance of dedicated choirmaster Hannah Soulsby-Philips, the girls’ choir will perform a selection of pieces including some seasonal favourites.

The choir was formed in 2013 by STUDIO ONE DIRECTOR Denise Booth to raise funds for the Help for Heroes charity. The choir has gone from strength-to-strength – performing at various charity events in the area.

Bring your children along to meet him in Penny’s Walk. Small charge will apply.

Santa will be in his Grotto at 1.30pm-2.30pm and 3.30pm-4.30pm.
