NEW MAYOR OF FERNDOWN 2016-2017 It is a huge honour and privilege to be elected Mayor of Ferndown, a town which has played such a large part in my life over the years. I understand from my family that at a very young age I saw the mayor and commented that one day I would like to be the mayor, I’m sure little did anyone think that I would actually do it once, let alone twice! I had a fabulous mayoral year in 2014 and it was fantastic that the council have had the confidence to elect me as mayor for a second time so soon. Over the past municipal year Cllr Julie Robinson has been a tremendous Town Mayor and an excellent ambassador to the town and personally it has been very rewarding to have been able to support her as Deputy Mayor. Those in the room who have been mayor before will know there is a mixture of pride, excitement and interpretation when first taking on this important role within the town and I remember my first few months in 2014 where it took some time to find my feet and understand the reality of the high regard the mayor is held within the town. With the benefit of my previous experience, this year I will be hitting the ground running and my diary is already starting to fill up with events within the town and further afield. Plans are already well under way for my Civic Service in July where I want representation from as many community organisations in the town as possible and my for my Civic Day in September, where
I will be showcasing our wonderful town to the community leaders from across Dorset. In terms of my duties I am looking forward to chairing the Town Council over the forthcoming year, which will no doubt present some challenges. Of particular interest will be changes to the operations surrounding the KGV charity and the impact to the council as the county considers unitary authority status. My priority for attendance at events during the year remains with the town, followed events in East Dorset, then the wider Dorset. I am pleased to announce that my Mayor’s Charity for the year is the Ferndown Community Association which benefits all residents of the town across the entire age spectrum, with the provision of events, activities and community facilities primarily through its centre at the Barrington. To finish, I would once again like to thank everyone for their support and I look forward to an exciting year ahead. Mike Parkes, Mayor of Ferndown

FERNDOWN WINS DORSET COUNTY POPPY LAUNCH
O
n Saturday 29th October, Ferndown will launch the 2016 Poppy Appeal for the whole of Dorset with a special day of events in the Penny’s Walk precinct. Planning is now well under way and it is hoped to start the day with a ‘Young Poppies’ children’s parade led by the Bournemouth Youth Marching Band and a ‘Best-dressed Young Poppy’ competition. Before a surprise entrance by the Mayor of Ferndown. The Appeal will be opened by the County Chairman of The Royal British Legion and the release of 2016 Poppy petals from the Barrington Centre. The day will continue with performances from local artists and bands from The Voice of Ferndown and Ferndown’s Got Talent and other events to be announced during the run-up to the Launch day. Chairman of Ferndown Royal British Legion, Grant Parrott, believes the award of the County
Launch is a big day for Ferndown and will bring together both young and slightly older people in the town to lead the whole of Dorset in supporting the nationwide appeal. The Poppy Appeal collects over £44 million each year and enables The Royal British Legion to spend over £1.4 million every week in caring and supporting serving and ex-services men and women and their families whenever and wherever it is needed most.

This year saw entries for the schools competition from schools in Ferndown, West Moors and West Parley. The judges had a hard time deciding which school was the winner, as all the schools spent time researching information relating to the Queens’ birthday. The winner in the end was Ferndown First. There is still time to enter in the following categories – Tallest Sunflower and Photography - closing date is 31st August. This year’s theme is ‘A Floral Feature’. Ideas can be anything from hanging baskets to centre pieces in the garden. All entries can be placed in the entry box at Haskins Garden Centre, or Ferndown Town Council at the Barrington Centre or returned to the Competitions Organiser, Ferndown in Bloom, 357 Ringwood Road, Ferndown, BH22 9AE. 4

A TOWN
REMEMBERED At 7.30am on the 1st July 1916, officers blew their whistles and troops scrambled out of trenches to walk, not run, towards the German lines. By the end of that first day, 19,240 British soldiers lost their lives and the total casualty figure was over 57,000: the highest number of casualties suffered by the British Army in any single day.
Ferndown Royal British Legion led the town’s remembrance with a Centenary Drumhead Service in the grounds of St. Mary’s Church in Church Road, Ferndown on Friday 1st July at 6.30 in the evening, where the Bournemouth Youth Marching Band played in concert and units from the Army Cadet Force, Sea Cadet Corps, Royal Marine Cadets and Air Training Corps paraded and joined Veterans, Associations and the Royal British Legion in Commemoration. On the weekend of 2nd/3rd July, an exhibition of Battle of the Sommeera models, letters and memorabilia and the histories of the nine men of Ferndown lost on the Somme and in France in 1916 were on display in the Royal British Legion building in Church Road, Ferndown.

La Casita del Flores Civic Service held at St. Mary’s Church Friday July 15th 2016 On a warm summers evening, Mayor Mike Parkes welcomed the people of Ferndown, the High Sheriff of Dorset, town councillors of Ferndown and many fellow mayors and civic leaders of Dorset to the Ferndown Civic Service at St. Mary’s Church. The service was opened by Rev. Patches Chabala and as the service got underway the 2358 (Ferndown) Squadron Air Training Corps presented the Standard to Rev. Sarah Pix. Mayor Mike Parkes spoke enthusiastically about the town of Ferndown giving praise to all the representatives from community groups, charities and organisations from within the community. He also thanked Patches and Sarah for making the service so special and Ferndown Town Council staff for making the evening possible, especially his secretary Kate for organising the event. Mike said “Having lived in this area since a small child I have seen many changes in the town, most of which have been both progressive and positive. It’s a privilege to become Mayor again this year for a second time.” The collection was taken for the Mayor’s chosen charity, the Ferndown Community Association, which runs and funds the Barrington Centre in Ferndown and benefits all residents of the town across the entire age spectrum. After singing several hymns, including Jerusalem and the Lord of the Dance, the congregation lit 84 candles in remembrance of those killed in Nice. The service was closed with a final prayer, blessing and the National Anthem. Everyone was then warmly invited to join in a hog roast and light refreshments at the front of the church.
Little House of Flowers in Ferndown. Lyn and Malcolm Ovens have been gardening for many years in Ferndown. They were initially influenced by both of their mothers, who too were keen gardeners. Lyn would like to encourage everyone to add a bit of colour and interest to their gardens. If you are new to gardening and view yourself as a beginner try the clematis - Arabella which is a great plant to start with, as it scrambles in and around other plants. It is best grown in medium type soil - not too much clay and not too much sand and produces a lovely deep purple flower. If you’re thinking of growing a vegetable plant - why not try runner beans in a pot of wigwam canes and for dessert Lyn suggests raspberries which need to be south facing. All you need is the raspberry plant, two canes and two or three strands of wire between them. In the winter months, a bit of colour can be achieved in the garden by planting shrubs with variegated leaves and in the springtime pots of tulips and daffodils to brighten up the garden. Lyn also recommends using blood, fish and bone food for feeding all the plants. In the spring time, sprinkle powder on the soil beds, but not directly onto the plants themselves just before the growth starts. The couple joined the National Garden scheme 16 years ago in 2000 after visiting several gardens in the scheme and thought - Why not to give it a go ourselves and so they did and have not looked back since. So how do people hear about their garden? Through local advertising and word-ofmouth and they have attracted hundreds of people to the garden over the years. A recent comment made by one visitor indicates how much they enjoyed their visit - “It’s so calm and peaceful, I can sit and re-charge my batteries”.

M&S FOODHALL Ferndown launch
LOUD CHEERS ERUPTED AS THE MARKS & SPENCER FOOD HALL IN FERNDOWN WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED WITH A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY BY FERNDOWN TOWN MAYOR CLLR MIKE PARKES AND M&S EMPLOYEES ON WED 6TH JULY The Mayor Mike Parkes spoke saying: “The M&S Food Hall is a great new addition to the town of Ferndown and myself and the local community alike have been fervently anticipating the opening of the store. It has been a privilege to open the store today and see the enjoyment and enthusiasm from the first customers passing through its doors. I’m sure the community of Ferndown will continue to embrace the new store and enjoy all the benefits it will bring to the town.” The opening of the Food Hall has brought nearly 50 new jobs to the local area and the M&S team has already committed to working with local charity, Hope for Food. 12

WARD CHARLOTTE READ A FOR ENDEAVOUR
What a brilliant display by Sensei Jordan Lea with his team of Instructors and Jitsuka at Jitsu recently. Also a big thank you to the Deputy Mayor of Ferndown Town Council Cllr Cathy Lugg with her escort Cllr Steve Lugg for presenting the Charlotte Read Award For Endeavour to Bethany Allan. Well-deserved Bethany you have earned this Award. The Charlotte Read Award is all about willpower, having a go at new things and getting on with life in a positive light. And well done to Harry on gaining his first mon.
On the Friday of the Queen’s official 90th birthday weekend celebrations, Mayor Mike Parkes joined several Ferndown residents aged 90 at the Orange Teapot in in Victoria Road where they were treated to sandwiches, pastries and cakes served with tea from orange teapots whilst listening to local singer Jenny Osborne sing several songs. A great time had by all. 14

Culture Week
THE CULTURE WEEK IN FERNDOWN TOOK PLACE DURING MID-JULY, 10TH THROUGH 16TH, PROVING TO BE AN EXCITING EXTENSION TO THE ALREADY SUCCESSFUL FERNDOWN ‘BIG GIG’ THAT’S TAKEN PLACE OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS. ANY PROFITS MADE FROM THE FESTIVAL HAVE GONE TO THE FERNDOWN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION. It started on Sunday 10th with a VIP Launch in the bar at the Barrington Theatre. Guest of Honour, the Mayor of Ferndown opened the week’s activities. Other guests invited to the launch included ‘Friend of Ferndown’, Piano Man Matt Black and Brian Oliver from Basement Studios. Local talented singer/guitarist Josh and Tim Baldwin provided the entertainment, and canapes and wine set the week off in some style. On Tuesday 12th, Ferndown Library hosted a second ‘Spoken Word’ event with local authors and poets including Carol Rivers and Ferndown’s own David Hough. Barrington manager Andy and co-pilot Nivek hosted a free film night on Wednesday 13th July, 18
with the bar being open. The highlight of the week was Showtime! The variety evening on Thursday was being Mc’d by ‘Chrissyferkin’, and featured a Comedy set from Matt Black with a surprise singing performance from an International Singing Star, with Sensu’elle and her Burlesque Belles completing a fabulous night of fun, art and pizazz! After the Town’s Civic Service and Hog Roast on the Friday, the week ended with an amazing mass charity abseil at St Mary’s Church on Saturday with 50 locals including Cllr Steve Lugg and Cllr Terry Cordery, ‘falling off’ the tower of the church for good causes locally.

Stepping into space for local charities Councillors Steve Lugg and Terry Cordery joined fifty people and stepped over the edge of St. Mary’s Church Ferndown tower to raise money for the local charity ‘The Bus Stop Club’ and the Beacon Café. The weather was fantastic – the sun was shining with clear blue skies. The sense of adventure was evident for many of the participants, as several of them had never abseiled before. To see people who were afraid of heights take the leap over the edge was admirable and all their fears were alleviated by the guys of Dave Talbot Adventure Events. A big thank you goes to all who sponsored the abseilers taking part – it will make a big difference to local families in the area.

Ferndown Culture hosts literature event
Local authors David Hough, Carol Rivers and poet John Seymour, joined visitors at Ferndown library during Ferndown Culture Week 2016 and spoke with passion on their subject specialty, their inspiration and journey. Years of writing experience between them have produced many gritty East-End sagas from Carol, novels from David covering subjects related to working life experiences, the most recent being aviation thrillers and the rhyme and metre captured in the telling of John’s poems was delightful to hear. Visitors were absorbed with the telling of the authors’ creative writing journeys, with many conversations ensued over coffee and homemade cakes.
- Many thanks go to Ferndown Library for hosting the event Ferndown Upper School had their Community Day during Ferndown Culture week. Ferndown saw many youngsters from Ferndown Upper School taking part in their day of community action. We were luckily enough to capture the work being done by some of the pupils litter picking and clearing out the Harmont Wood Pond with school teachers.

Ferndown Upper School is Good in all Categories with many Outstanding Features Ferndown Upper School’s Headteacher, Philip Jones, is delighted with the school’s recent Ofsted report which is live on the Ofsted website from Friday 1st July. He states that the report is testament to all of the hard work that has been put in over the last few years by the school’s students, teachers and staff. “We know that we are a school that cares, where there is excellent behaviour and excellent progress, but it is very pleasing to have Ofsted come and visit us to confirm this.” “In fact 2015 – 16 has been a dream year for the school. Firstly we received an excellent set of exam results. Results have always been very close between the three upper schools in East Dorset, so for Ferndown to be top of the table for 6th Form results, as well as for English and Maths GCSE progress was a great achievement. In fact people may not be aware of the fact but we

Ferndown Fete on the Field this summer – It was a great day on the Saturday and the weather was in our favour. A big thank you goes to the Ferndown Rotary for organising the event with the Ferndown Town Council supporting the fete. Mayor Cllr Mike Parkes opened the fete and ofďŹ cially started both the 10k run followed by the 5K run.

T
here were several events and attractions going on throughout the day, including the popular fun dog show, songs by the Ferndown rainbow, brownies and guides, classic cars, a magician, an interesting flying display from the Liberty Owl and Raptor Centre, a model airplane demonstration and you could even see a Stormtrooper interviewing possible recruits. Local churches set up a tent where families could decorate and eat cupcakes and listen to stories. People were able to buy all sorts of food at the various stalls with ice-cream being particularly popular. This year saw two Ferndown local charities being sponsored at the fete – JTYAF and The Bus Stop Club.

Our sincere thanks to the Simons group and Chris Pierson the site manager. On the completion of the Marks & Spencers building on Ringwood Road, Chris arranged with the company to donate to the charity 30 sheets of 18mm plywood and a quantity of 75 x 50 mm timber so that a portable floor could be constructed for the bandstand. The bandstand floor has been designed and will be available for the next event to be held in the KGV fields.
