Ferndown’s Mayoral Volunteer Awards 2018 Last year the Mayor hosted the Mayoral Volunteer Awards and was astounded by the amount of applications that were received from members of the public putting forward individuals who they recognised as being selfless volunteer workers within Ferndown.

The Awards are the Mayor’s way of thanking exceptional people and groups for the incredible work they do within the community. It is an opportunity for Ferndown to officially recognise the commitment and hard work of those who strive to make a positive difference to the lives of others and demonstrate outstanding citizenship.

Similarly to last year, the awards will be split into three categories: • • •

Ferndown’s Community Champion Ferndown’s Youth Hero (18 years and under) Ferndown’s Voluntary Group Award

Poppy Appeal launch in Penny’s Walk Saturday 27th October will see the launch of the 2018 Poppy Appeal in Penny’s Walk Precinct with the ‘Young Poppies’ Competition being judged at 10.15am, followed by a parade of cadets and standards through the precinct to the Barrington Centre.

At 11.00, the now famous Poppy Explosion over the precinct will lead to the mayor buying the first poppy and an entertainment programme from local singers led this year by the cast of ‘Pack up Your Troubles’ with songs from their show to be performed at the Barrington Centre over Remembrance Week.

A new Mayor for Ferndown

Following the sad loss of the Town’s Mayor, Cllr Steve Lugg, Ferndown Town Council is pleased to announce the election of a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Ferndown.

At an Extraordinary Council Meeting held on 24 August 2018, Cllr Mrs Jean Read was elected as Mayor, and Cllr Mrs Julie Robinson elected as Deputy Mayor.

Cllr Mrs Jean Read will be the 37th Town Mayor of Ferndown and it will be her second term as Mayor, having served in the role in 2010/11.

Cllr Mrs Read has been a councillor since 1995 and has been a member of a number of the Council’s committees. She is currently the Chairman of the Personnel Committee.

Cllr Mrs Read said, “It is a great honour to be elected as the Town Mayor of Ferndown again. I thoroughly enjoyed carrying out my duties when I was Mayor in 2010/11 so I am very much looking forward to being in the role again. Ferndown faces new challenges since my last Mayorship, such as Dorset’s Local Government Reorganisation, and it will be my priority to ensure that the needs of Ferndown and its residents are met”.

A lady well-known in the town, Jean has lived in Ferndown since 1986, when she moved from Bedfordshire with her husband Fred, and young family. Jean has 2 children, 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Until recently, Jean was the Chairman of Ferndown in Bloom for a number of years and was the lead on the project which planted daffodils along Ringwood Road. She currently runs the Friday Coffee Morning at the Barrington Centre and is a regular member of the congregation at St. Mary’s Church.

A VERY SPECIAL YEAR OF REMEMBRANCE Ferndown is this year planning a series of events to commemorate this very special year of Remembrance marking the one hundredth anniversary of the end of World War One and the century of conflict that was to follow.

Saturday 27th October will see the launch of the 2018 Poppy Appeal in Penny’s Walk Precinct with the ‘Young Poppies’ Competition, a parade of cadets and standards and the now famous Poppy Explosion over the precinct. Following this there will be an entertainment programme from local singers led this year by the cast of ‘Pack up Your Troubles’ with songs from their show to be performed at the Barrington over Remembrance Week.

Sunday 11th November is the focus of the town’s Remembrance plans starting at 10.45am with an Armistice Day Service in the Garden of Remembrance at The Royal British Legion in Church Road, to be followed by the full Remembrance Parade and Service in the afternoon.

The Parade which gets bigger every year, will be led by the Mayor and Councillors of Ferndown with Veterans, Cadets, Guides, Scouts and Youth Groups from Ferndown, West Moors, Longham, Parkstone, Bournemouth and Poole. The parade will form up at the KGV playing fields at 2.15pm before marching to St. Mary’s Church along Church Road, escorted by Wessex Military Vehicles, and returning to take the salute at 4.00pm.

The day will end with Ferndown joining a nation-wide tribute of 1,000 towns selected to join the ‘Battle’s Over’ Project to feature the lighting of a Beacon of Remembrance and peal of Church Bells together with the Town crier giving ‘A Cry for Peace’. The open-air event again will be at the RBL Garden of Remembrance in Church Road at 6.45pm with the Legion open to all for mulled wine and mince pies from 6.00pm.

Don’t suffer a cold home Living in a cold home can be bad for your health.

Consistently low temperatures in your home may exacerbate existing health issues (particularly respiratory and cardiovascular conditions) and make it harder for you to recover from illnesses.

It can cause you and your family to feel miserable at home, affecting concentration, dexterity and mental health.

Dorset County Council has been working to address these issues and make it easier for people struggling to heat their home to a healthy, comfortable temperature to access free advice and support and free insulation.

Residents can now contact Healthy Homes Dorset - a one stop shop for all cold home and energy queries. The service aims to provide free, impartial advice about keeping your home warm, understanding your heating system and energy bills, switching energy supplier and making energy saving improvements – eligible households will receive free loft and cavity wall insulation. The service also aims to prevent isolation worry by signing residents up for power cut advice so that in the event of a power cut, they have the support that they need. Energy

advice can be given through home visits as well as over the phone. Fire safety alarm and appliance checks can also be organised in partnership with Fire and Rescue for eligible residents.

Healthy Homes Dorset will also be working closely with relevant organisations to ensure that the team are able to refer and signpost residents for additional support. This could include ensuring you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to or support in making essential improvements to your home. Insulation is one of the best ways of lowering your energy bills as well as replacing old, inefficient heating systems.

Healthy Homes Dorset can let you know if you’re eligible for funding to help towards the cost of making your home warmer and more comfortable.

PLASTIC FREE FERNDOWN The Plastic Free Ferndown was launched in August outside the Barrington Centre with a free BBQ supplied by the Flying Teapot cafÊ and expertly cooked by a one of their staff. At the same time the Barrington Centre officially stopped using single-use plastic as part of the day’s event. Many people walking past stopped to find out more about the initiative and how anyone could take steps to reduce plastic usage in their lives.

Dorset businesses to benefit from £4.5m skills training pot Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Dorset are urged to take advantage of a £4.5m skills training pot for their workforce, as a result of a contract extension.

The training is delivered as part of a programme called Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW), which Serco’s Employment, Skills & Enterprise business is managing across Dorset. Since the programme launched in September 2016, 2,227 learners from 759 businesses across Dorset have taken advantage of the funded training available*. Serco has just been awarded a contract extension to continue delivering the programme until March 2019, at which point the funding will come to an end.

Serco provides a range of courses to the following sectors, which have been identified as key priority sectors by Dorset’s Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP): • • • • • • • • •

Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing (Aerospace, Defence & Marine technologies) Agri-tech, Food & Drink Creative Industries (Silicon South) Environmental Goods & Services Financial Services Accommodation & Food Services Manufacturing Public Administration, Education & Health Wholesale, Retail, Motor Trades

Businesses operating in these sectors can access funding for training courses such as IT, leadership and management, as well as vocationally-relevant training (depending on the sector).

To deliver the programme, which is co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency, Serco has partnered with expert training organisations to offer local businesses recognised accredited qualifications and bespoke training courses aiming to enhance employees’ skills and increase the competitiveness of the businesses.

Businesses can select from a range of qualifications or mix and match individual units to support their work. The courses, which can take place at the employees’ workplace, range from a few hours’ training, to units of NVQ or other qualifications. Programme participants have benefited from increased employee confidence, motivation and productivity and businesses have reported improved employee loyalty and retention.

Commenting on the contract extension, Rob Matts, Serco’s Head of Skills Support for the Workforce, said: “We are delighted that the Education and Skills Funding agency are trusting Serco to continue making a positive impact to local communities in Dorset. Skills Support for the Workforce is a brilliant skills training programme which small businesses in Dorset can take advantage of at no cost to them. Thousands of people have benefited from this programme already and I would urge businesses to make the most of the funding available before March 2019, so that they too can benefit from this investment in vital skills training.”

The Mayor of Ferndown’s funeral

The Mayor of Ferndown’s funeral took place on Friday 17 August 2018 and it was standing room only in St. Mary’s Church, Ferndown as family, friends, civic dignitaries and colleagues attended the church.

The funeral cortege followed military standards from The Royal British Legion, Ferndown to St. Mary’s Church, with the hearse flanked by members of the Household Calvary in which Cllr Lugg served. As the coffin was brought to the altar, ‘Zadok The Priest’ by Handel played as mourners stood in respect.

The church service, led by Reverend Patches Chabala, featured a performance of the hymn ‘In Christ Alone’ by WO1 Matt Griffiths and Tori Allen who regularly performed at Steve’s charitable events.

Rhys Lugg, a serving soldier with the Household Calvary, delivered a touching tribute to his father. He recalled happy family memories and his father’s immense support in anything he and his siblings wished to pursue. He remarked that his father instilled a good working ethic in his children for which he was grateful.

The service also featured a bible reading from Steve’s son, Ed Lugg, and tributes from East Dorset District Councillor Ray Bryan and close friend, Dr Andrew Hopkins. Both tributes recalled

his tremendous passion for life, travel, music, the compassion he showed for the needs of others and, most notably, the bravery he showed towards the end of his life.

A slideshow of photographs of Steve throughout his life was shown to the congregation and accompanied to “Town Called Malice” by The Jam – Steve’s favourite band.

As the moving service concluded, The Life Guard’s Regimental Collect was read by Steve’s friend, Paddy Baker. The congregation then stood for ‘The Last Post’ after which a minute’s silence was observed to remember the town’s local hero who will be sadly missed.

Your Dorset - Right stuff, right bin Dorset recycling rates are at an all-time high (59.5%) and among the best in the country, but there are still a few items that keep cropping up in the wrong bin.

KING GEORGE V

UPDATE Following approximately 18 months of scoping, planning and public consultation, the Town Council committed to making a significant investment to improve the facilities available to Ferndown residents at King George V Playing Fields. We were delighted to see work on the project commence in March.

To minimise disruption to the various users of the current facilities, a complex plan was put in place to phase the project which has enabled us to ensure that sporting and recreational activities continue throughout the summer months.

Improvements have taken place to the car parking facilities and to the ground staff workshops, the latter freeing up valuable space within the Pavilion building for recreational and sporting activities.

During October ‘phase 1’ of the improvements to the Pavilion will be completed, this includes refurbished changing rooms, improved showers and one of the new club rooms. Additionally, the outside public toilets have been changed to accessible toilets with baby changing facilities. Upon completion, this half of the building will be fully open for use for users of the sporting facilities.

As we move into the end of October, we will see the transition of the activity to ‘phase 2’ of the 24

Pavilion works which run through until February.

This will see the creation of a new function room with capacity to cater for 80 seated or 150 standing, a refurbished club room, new food preparation facilities and safer pedestrian access in the external areas of the building.

During the early new year we will be commencing our planned upgrade to the children’s play area which will involve replacement of equipment and a redesign of the landscaping. We will also be starting the refurbishment of the tennis courts which will include resurfacing and additional floodlighting.

There will be the creation of a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) which will offer a number of sporting activities that we can’t currently accommodate including five-a-side football, netball and basketball as well as existing sports such as tennis.

We would like to thank our users for their patience and understanding whilst the works continue to take place. We are confident the short term pain will create a substantial long term gain for the residents of Ferndown.

Volunteers for Riffs

Would you like to make a difference to young people’s lives and have fun at the same time? Ferndown Youth Centre – Riffs is looking for volunteers to help us deliver our youth club sessions. We open both for afternoon and evening sessions and cater to a wide age range of young people. If you have a couple of hours to spare there are many options where you can help, whether it’s running the coffee bar, organising activities or helping the young people directly.

Becoming a volunteer youth worker can be very rewarding, help you to enter further employment and learn or expand on life skills. Volunteering with us would also help you to gain experience if you are interested in working with young people either in youth work or similar settings. We can offer full training and support as well as the chance to gain recognised qualifications.

LESS THAN 100 DAYS TO CHRISTMAS: ‘STOP, THINK AND BUDGET’ With less than 100 days to go until Christmas, a free local debt counselling service is warning East Dorset people to save and stay in the black this Christmas.

The warning comes from Pam Ansell, East Dorset Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre Manager, as the 100 day festive countdown has already begun. Run by the Bus Stop Club and Hope Church Ferndown in partnership with CAP, the debt centre opened four years ago and has helped over 70 people with 12 so far becoming debt free. The Centre is supported by local churches.

Pam Ansell, said: “With less than 100 days to Christmas it might not seem like much time to get saving, but you’d be amazed how much you can save yourself if you just stop, think and budget.”

“This way you can experience 28

all the joys of the festive season, but without the stress and, importantly, without credit.”

She added that she and her team of volunteers have visited 14 individuals and families affected by debt in the East Dorset area so far in 2018. Every person is visited in their home, while specialist teams at CAP’s head office negotiate with creditors and create a workable budget enabling each person to go debt free.

Pam said: “Every year we see an increase of people coming to us in January who have spent more than they can afford at Christmas. We know that if more people started saving just £5 per week from today that would give them £70

to spend on presents and food come December.”

She said that East Dorset CAP Debt Centre is one of over 300 around the UK providing long-term help and support for some the country’s most vulnerable people.

Pam said: “If you know that, before Christmas comes your finances are not in good shape and you are struggling to pay the bills - don’t struggle on, one phone call could be the difference between a merry Christmas or a miserable Christmas.

WATCH YOUR SPEED IN FERNDOWN A new group of volunteers has been set up in Ferndown with the aim of promoting road safety.

Ron Cross, Community Speedwatch Coordinator, is in the process of establishing a new community group of volunteers to promote road safety and to encourage motorists to observe our speed limits. He was asked to do this by the Town Council’s Traffic Working Party and with the support of Ferndown Neighbourhood Police Team (NPT).

Ron set up this group as Ferndown is the largest inland town in Dorset, and a popular route for commercial vehicles and holidaymakers, but is one of the few towns in the area without a speedwatch group. A few days ago they did their first roadside sessions, accompanied

by Ferndown police (NPT), and received a generally very favourable response from both

motorists and local residents.

In two 50-minute sessions in Church Road and Victoria Road they were seen by over 400 motorists, many of whom slowed when they saw them, to observe the speed limit.

Unfortunately, there were also 8 motorists who exceeded the speed limit and have been reported.

To be able to do the speedwatch, Ron managed to borrow the necessary equipment and hi-viz jackets for a few months, but they are in ‘desperate need of more volunteers’ and ‘help with funds’ if the community speedwatch is going to survive.

The chair of the Traffic Working Party, Cllr Mrs Cathy Lugg said “The Traffic Working Party are working proactively

to address local residents’ concerns. This is an example of the Town Council working in partnership with local residents.”

David Cockbaine Shield awarded to prizewinning designers at FUS Ferndown Upper School are celebrating a clutch of design awards for their work in fashion, textiles and design technology. Numerous cash prizes and commendations are awarded for deserving STEM based student projects across Dorset schools by the charitable Valter Trust and Dorset Asset (assistance to schools with science, engineering and technology).

Quoting from the recent newsletter: “A number of excellent textiles projects were received and cash prizes awarded to students at Ferndown Upper School. The Gwen Kent, top textile prize of £100 went to Jannatul Firdaus, £75 to Aleksandra Dyka, and £30 each for Jodie Ramsier, Danny Miles and Holly Smith.”

Ferndown Upper School students also celebrated two resistant materials prizes of £50.00; Asha Dunesby Bent and Charlie Batchelor. These outstanding achievements have also resulted in

FUS being the overall winners this year of the ‘David Cockbaine’ shield for Design Innovation and Workmanship. The shield is awarded annually and was previously held by Thomas Hardye School and Poole Grammar School.

Lisa Robson (head of Textiles) enthused “We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements in winning these awards; their hard work, imagination, creativity and innovation has been recognised and rewarded, opening doors to creative futures. This reflects our ethos of being a STEAM school here at FUS; putting the ‘a’ (art) into STEM. We are over the moon to have been judged so favourably by the trustees of Dorset Asset and very much value the support and positive feedback we have received from the chairman and trustees who visited and interviewed our students; Peter Taylor, John and Gwen Kent.
