Towns and villages across our circulation area are preparing events to celebrate HM The Queen’s 70 years on the throne, and there will be plenty for people of all ages to get involved with. You can find details on page 23.

by Cecil Beaton was taken on the occasion of The Queen’s Coronation, more than 70 years ago, and gives cause for reflection on the changes our country has seen during the Queen’s reign.

When the Queen was born, women were not allowed to vote. Since then we have seen two female prime ministers, India declared its independence, Hong Kong was returned to China, and other former colonies are also considering breaking formal ties with the British monarchy. On the other hand, the Commonwealth family is thriving.

Popular culture has changed dramatically and the invention of the Internet has changed how we communicate with each other and spend our free time.

On a personal note, the Queen has become a mother of four, grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of 12, but very sadly lost her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh last year.

Two arrested

Two people were arrested on suspicion of drug offences as part of a new crackdown aimed at targeting suspected county lines drug gangs operating in Dorset.

Officers from Dorset Police’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Teams (NET) stopped a vehicle that was suspected of being involved in drug supply in Alumhurst Road in Bournemouth on the morning of Sunday 8 May. Further searches were carried out at an address in Burnaby Road, where a quantity of cash and expensive designer clothing was located. Following intelligence, a second search was carried out at an address in Merseyside and a large quantity of cash, and a quantity of suspected Class A and Class B drugs were seized.

A 32-year-old man from Wavertree in Merseyside was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a Class A drug, possession with intent to supply a Class B drug and being concerned in the control of criminal property.

A 21-year-old local man was arrested for possession of a Class B drug and was issued with an adult caution. He was also arrested on suspicion of a driving offence and has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Petition to protect farmland

The Society for Poole has launched a petition to ban development on agricultural land in the area.

The petition argues that only areas that are not or have not previously been used for farming should be used for development. It also states that more than a quarter of the world’s wheat is produced by Russia or Ukraine and, due to the current conflict, imports cannot be guaranteed. Protecting agricultural land could help give the UK independence and food security.

The Prince of Wales visits the Royal Bournemouth Hospital The Royal Bournemouth Hospital received a visit from HRH The Prince of Wales on 6 May. HRH met staff from across University Hospitals Dorset and visited the new operating theatre that will help with the backlog of patients requiring elective operations since the pandemic.

He then officially opened the hospital’s new Lavender Garden, dedicated to the memory of colleagues who have died, and a special area for staff to rest, reflect and recharge.

The new operating theatre, which was built in a matter of months, opened its doors to patients at the beginning of May. After a tour of the theatre, Prince Charles then spoke to members of staff from across the hospital trust who went above and beyond during the Covid pandemic.

On his way to the Lavender Garden, Prince Charles walked alongside the hospital’s lake and spoke to members of the trust’s estate team to learn more about the benefits of green spaces to both staff and patients.

He then unveiled a plaque in the new Lavender Garden and met relatives and colleagues of hospital staff who have passed away. The garden is a peaceful oasis for staff and was funded by generous donations to the University Hospital Dorset NHS Charity.

The Prince was accompanied on his visit by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, the Hon Mrs Charlotte Townshend, the hospital’s acting CEO Paula Shobbrook and acting chairman Philip Green.

NEWS IN BRIEF Rape investigation: A 19-year-old man from Folkestone, Kent appeared at Poole Magistrates’ Court on 29 April 2022 for offences of rape and assault by penetration in connection with the reported rape of a teenage girl in Poole that happened on 13 March 2021. He is next due to appear at Bournemouth Crown Court on Monday, 30 May. Man sentenced: Jack William Haskell, 23, admitted two offences of being present at an animal fight and an offence of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal under the Animal Welfare Act. He has been banned from owning cockerels and dogs for 10 years and has also been fined.

Lucy heads to world championships A Poole teenager is one of 16 of the country’s young sailors to have been selected to represent Great Britain at the Youth Sailing World Championships, which will take place at The Hague, Netherlands, from 8-15 July 2022.

Lucy Kenyon, from Parkstone YC, will return to the British Youth Sailing (BYS) team for a second youth Worlds appearance and is looking to call on

previous knowledge to go one step further in 2022.

She said: “I’m mega excited to be selected for the girls’ iQFOiL place for the youth worlds in The Hague.

It looks like it’s going to be a great event and I’m looking forward to working hard over the next few months trying to beat last year’s fourth place.

“It’ll be an awesome start to this year’s international racing season and I’m excited to kick it off with a bang.”

Jubilee funding for school projects Six schools have received a share of £34,000 to help pay for projects that will support their students’ mental health and wellbeing.

The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) made the awards in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at a recent.

Receiving the awards were: Parley First School – for the purchase of a Mongolian yurt to provide shelter and a calm learning space in their Forest School area.

Hampreston First School – for the redevelopment of an IT suite into a reading room.

Ferndown First School – to replace the central section of the school’s play trail.

Ferndown Middle School – to help pay for ground works and mature trees in a new Tranquillity Garden.

Beaucroft Foundation School – to support the building of an outdoor performance stage.

Ferndown Upper School – to fund a wall art project and contribute towards the development of the student area in the Inclusion Hub for higher need SEND students.

Pete Thornton, chair of JTYAF said: “All of these projects are aimed at helping local young people with

their mental health and wellbeing, and they really do need it, especially in light of the past two years of pandemic and all that is going on in the world today.

“This year’s special Jubilee Fund is providing vital support with these exciting projects and will touch the lives of many children in our community.

We feel it’s a fitting way to pay tribute to our Queen in her Platinum Jubilee year.”

Your children and the law:

court priority to children of separated parents

By Rob Price – Family Law Solicitor, HGW Solicitors From the beginning of March 2022, Dorset and North Wales are participating in a government approved pilot scheme to streamline applications to the court for child arrangements, if parents cannot agree on how their children share their time between their separate homes.

The purpose is to prevent long, expensive and acrimonious court cases between warring parents.

Undoubtedly, the emotional impact on children can be devastating when parents separate and argue.

The children are often the ones most affected by the lasting negative impact.

So, for the first time, when the court receives an application concerning child arrangements: • Initial ‘gatekeeping’ will check whether mediation is appropriate and been attempted; • A case progression officer (CPO) will contact the parents and explain what happens next; • A child impact report (CIR) will be prepared;

• If appropriate, the local authority, the police and other relevant organisations can become involved to conduct risk and safeguarding assessments; • Parents can also be ’signposted’ to specifically skilled organisations in the community (outside the court) to see if they can help; • A Family Court judge will still be involved to make decisions if necessary.

Even at the end of the process, when hopefully all is settled with a plan, the court can review this between three and 12 months afterwards if it helps the children and parents.

All of this is child-centred. The court wants to help parents avoid the situation where all logic is lost through emotion at what is obviously a difficult time and to help steer parents and the children through to the future more positively than the current Family Court system.

Wimborne saw its first parade for two years, when local dignitaries accompanied by Dorset Youth Marching Band, walked from Church House on a route through the square to the Civic Thanksgiving Service in the Minster on Sunday 8 May. In addition to the Mayor Cllr Kelly Webb the event was attended by the deputy lieutenant for Dorset, Ms Felicity Irwin, the High Sheriff of Dorset Dr Sibyl Fine King, the chairman of Dorset Council, Val Pothecary and mayors and chairmen from Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset.

The service was conducted by The Rev Canon Andrew Rowland, rector of Wimborne Minster and rural dean of Wimborne.

A care home in Mudeford hatched a plan to celebrate springtime by hosting the birth of some fluffy chicks.

Team members at Avon Reach care home put a heated incubator with embryo eggs centre stage in the home’s lounge, and residents waited eagerly for the new arrivals.

They were transfixed Resident Deirdre Hill as, one by one, the eggs holds one of the chicks hatched over the course of several days with, eventually, eight chicks welcomed into the world.

Companionship team leader Megan Castell said: “It was the most magical time and our residents were totally fascinated.

“It was so interactive when the chicks arrived as residents could get up close and hold them.”

All eight chicks born at Avon Reach have now left to go to good homes, either free range farms locally or to people with existing hen flocks.

Help to improve heart health

More local people, including those with long Covid, are to be encouraged to improve their heart health.

The Bournemouth Heart Club (BHC), located at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, is widening its membership to any adults at higher risk of heart disease and other health conditions including diabetes and stroke.

All instructors at BHC have the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Level 4 accreditation and there is lifesaving equipment located in the gym should it ever be needed.

The Heart Club is offering adults of all ages the ability to self-refer through the Keep Well Hub. Any new member will have an initial assessment and be given a personalised programme of exercise over an initial 10-week period, as long as they exercise twice a week.

Full STEAM ahead The ninth annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) Challenge took place at Bournemouth University recently.

The event for Year 8 and 9 girls was organised by Soroptimist International Bournemouth. Teams were asked to design, research and build a product, with the results displayed at the awards night before the winners were announced.

Canford School took both first and second prizes in the Year 9 category. The Year 8 winners were from Noadswood School, of Dibden Purlieu, Hythe, with their project Nutrition Aid and the runners-up were from Lytchett Minster School.

The aim of the annual challenge is to encourage girls to overcome genderbased barriers by selecting STEAM subjects and following related careers.

Could your child get free school meals?

If you are feeling the financial squeeze due to the increased cost of living, Dorset Council is urging you to check if your children could qualify for free school meals, which could save up to £450 per year per child.

As well as a healthy meal every school day, the child’s school will receive a Pupil Premium – extra government funding towards more teaching staff, tuition or activities.

Dorset children who receive free school meals can also take part in free activities during some school holidays.

Dorset Council provides a confidential checker so parents and carers can quickly see if they qualify. The schools do not see financial information about the families applying.

A child may be able to get free school meals if their parent or carer receives any of the following: • Income Support • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit • Child Tax Credit – as long as you’re not entitled to Working Tax Credit and your annual gross income is no more than £16,190 • Working Tax Credit ‘run-on’ payment • Universal Credit – as long as your household income is less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get) Children who are paid these benefits directly, instead of through a parent or carer, can also get free school meals.

Merley Lollipop lady retires The longest serving Lollipop lady in Dorset has retired after 47 years of helping children to cross the road safely.

Jean Witt first served as a Lollipop lady at Lockyers Middle School and Rushcombe First School in Corfe Mullen. Ten years later, in 1984, she changed sites to Merley First School.

Jean remained at Merley First School ever since. Many of the children she originally crossed are now bringing their own children to the school.

Jean said: “I have really enjoyed being part of the community and I will miss the children very much.”

To celebrate her retirement, the pupils and staff at Merley First School held a special assembly and presented Jean with flowers and cards to thank her for her years of service. Jean’s manager from BCP Council was also in attendance.

WHAT YOU DON’T SEA The impact of plastic pollution that you don’t see, under the sea.

As team CJC clears mountains of rubbish off the beaches – from packaging, bottles, fishing line, nurdles and micro plastics – it becomes apparent that there are many sources of waste that have an impact on the local environment. As you can see from the image this month, a seabird met a horrific end, wrapped in rope and fishing line. Both items are likely to have been discarded.

Like most waste on the beach, be it litter or plastic toys, it all needs to be eradicated.

This sea bird lived above sea level and we are aware of the creature’s fate, but a lot of waste is washed ashore

and back out to sea where it vanishes from view. What you do not see is what is happening below sea level.

Marine life and plants are being devastated by waste and discarded items. More action needs to be taken by the public along coastlines to ensure that marine life is preserved and not put under harm.

Beach cleaners don’t volunteer because they want to clean up after thoughtless or lazy people, they give their time to preserve wildlife and reduce suffering to eco systems.

These eco systems are integral to keeping the coast

habitable and prosperous.

More could be done by fisherman to reduce the amount of fishing line discarded into the sea, which is lethal to the marine life that gets snagged in it.

More should be done by manufacturers to create more sustainable products and less harmful equipment.

Industry has come a long way, but it must go further.

Everyone can do their bit. Maybe councils could put up more signage, maybe there should be more bins, maybe we could all just take our litter home. The solutions are right in front of

us if we apply ourselves.

One thing that can’t be stressed enough is how beautiful the oceans look from a distance and how vast they are. Just because you can’t see what is happening below sea level doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Help protect the oceans; we depend on them, as will our future generations.

Duncan on epic 100km Jurassic Coast run Duncan Ross from Christchurch Rugby Club is taking on an epic challenge and will be running 100km through the night along the Jurassic Coast, in aid of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care and Clean Jurassic Coast.

Southbourne-based Duncan is a teacher and the community lead at Christchurch RFC. The club chose Lewis-Manning as its nominated charity partner for 2021/22.

Duncan said: “That is why I have decided to complete this challenge for them, as well as Clean Jurassic Coast, both are causes very close to my heart.” He added his step-dad Glyn had been cared for by a hospice in his last few weeks.

Duncan also wants to help make a difference to the planet. “I spend a lot of time on the Jurassic Coast and am a big believer in eco and going green. I enjoy doing organised Clean Jurassic Coast beach cleans with my daughter, Pips, and we’re incredibly proud to be a part of this and making a difference, helping to preserve the planet for future generations.”

It’s taken him a while to get challenge-fit as he broke his ankle last year, whilst playing rugby. He will be running with long-time friend Nelly.

The challenge will start at 8pm on 11 June in Weymouth and finish in Exmouth.

Countryside charity slams Merley housing plan

Outline permission has been granted for a substantial development at Merley and the CPRE has joined voices of opposition.

Dorset CPRE (Countryside Charity) has responded to the news that, despite a long campaign by local people and hundreds of objections, outline permission has been granted for a 550-home development at Merley which will also include a care home.

The land, which is adjacent to Canford School, was identified for development in 2018 under the Poole Local Plan.

Representatives of Save Land North of Merley, a transport consultant, and the three ward councillors all spoke against the application, detailing its flaws and areas of non-compliancy.

Peter Bowyer, Dorset branch chairman of the countryside charity’s trustees, said: “Having assisted the local action group in Poole (and relevant councillors) we are very disappointed to learn that the proposal to build 550 houses on land between Merley and Wimborne to the South of the River Stour was recently supported by a few councillors having delegated powers but still accountable to the ultimately responsible Full Council. Their support was given despite the clear statement, at their meeting, that the proposal relates to a mistake in the Poole Local Plan and the fact that some advice was misleading or not available to the meeting.

“It was not surprising to learn that the matter has been referred to the Secretary of State, by the action group concerned – Save Land North of Merley – for a review of the issues, a matter we intend to formally endorse.”

Mr Bowyer identified several points the CPRE felt should be considered.

He said that Poole has a failing Local Plan (with a high figure of 1,000 extra houses per year), which has led to development proposals such as this one in Merley.

He added: “Both BCP and Poole Councils have been advised by consultants that there is insufficient growth within their areas to support such a high figure.”

Mr Bowyer said that Dorset CPRE and others support a lower housing figure and the provision of affordable housing – using urban brownfield sites.

He said: “Local Plan processes are going on ‘behind closed doors’ in both BCP and Dorset Councils. Residents can benefit from transparent processes and from up-to-date Local Plans based on the latest ONS forecasts. The benefits of sound plans and acceptable implementation of them are obviously at risk.”

He added that Dorset CPRE remains committed to sound planning for the whole of Dorset and welcomes working with concerned people and their communities.

Rare reptiles affected by heath fire

It was mixed news for those trying to rescue rare wildlife following the devastating fire which destroyed 16.7 hectares of the Canford Heath on 23 April.

Dorset Wildlife Trust is inviting everyone to take part in 30 Days Wild, a month-long challenge to encourage people to reconnect with nature.

The challenge kicks off on 1 June and there will be a series of events at Dorset Wildlife Trust visitor centres across the county. It is aimed at people of all ages and from all backgrounds, and suggested activities include wildlifewatching, eating outdoors, planting wildflower seeds and listening to birdsong.

It’s a dog’s life – but for how long?

The well-known urban myth is that a dog year is equivalent to seven human years, suggesting that your canine companion ages seven times faster than you. New research from the Royal Veterinary College’s VetCompass initiative appears to bear this out. The study, looking at the clinical records of over 30,000 dogs across the country showed life expectancy was 11 years 3 months, which is remarkably similar to one seventh of humans’.

However, scratching below the surface, the research found startling differences between different breeds of dog. Whilst Jack Russell Terriers on average lived 12.7 years, the life expectancy for a French Bulldog from birth was only 4.5 years. Along with other ‘brachycephalic’ (flat faced) breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs, the research found

that a high mortality rate in the first few years of life brings the average down by years. These breeds are known to be prone to particular diseases, often requiring expensive treatment which many struggle to afford without health insurance.

On the other hand, if your Frenchie gets through those first years in good health, you can expect a similar outcome to other breeds.

This observation was greatest in Chihuahuas, where it was found that despite a relatively high number dying young and overall life expectancy only 7.9 years, those that make it to 10 had a high chance of carrying on well into their late teens.

New Dorset High Sheriff Dorset has a new High Sheriff.

Sibyl King formally took on the role at a ceremony held in Arts University Bournemouth’s Drawing Studio on 2 April. She launched her year with the theme of the Healing Power of Nature.

She said: “I am honoured to have been appointed High Sheriff of Dorset 2022-2023 and it will be my absolute pleasure to serve the residents of Dorset through meeting, listening, and trying to make a positive impact.

“In this High Sheriff year, I particularly want to celebrate and explore innovative ways to use the healing power of nature and encourage and support people from all walks of life, and especially individuals within the justice system, to experience the benefits that the natural environment can bring.”

Christchurch Food Bank+ has received a grant of £1,500 towards its cookery workshops and Meal in a Bag projects.

The money has been awarded by Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust (CFFET) and chairman of the trustees, Julie Ratcliffe, said: “Understanding basic cookery, food and nutrition not only enables people to cook healthy meals but also to save money.

The much-needed projects will make a difference to the health and wellbeing of local people.”

Tracy Blick, manager of the Foodbank+, said: “This is so wonderful, as a local foodbank+, we rely on donations to continue the good work we do in the community.

This donation will enable us to start up our cooking on a budget workshops (teaching people to cook homecooked, healthy meals for their families and equipping them to shop well and eat well) and offer our ‘Meals in a Bag’ to our visitors.”

The Meal in a Bag project provides all the ingredients and a slow cooker if needed, to make a good homecooked meal that a family can make together.

This year’s Christchurch Food Festival runs from 2-5 June.

First Scouts Squirrel Drey opens in Christchurch Christchurch Scouts have celebrated the opening of their first Squirrels section at Hurn, which is open to children aged four and five. They were joined by Cllr Mrs Sue Bungey, mayor of Christchurch, who watched the new Squirrels building mini campfires, singing and enjoying their opening party with cake.

Frances Fawcett, Deputy District Commissioner for Christchurch Scouts, said: “It’s very exciting to see Scouting grow in Christchurch and now reach even more young people in our communities. With the help of our wonderful adult volunteers, we are expecting this to be the first of many openings.”

The group is happy to hear from anyone with youngsters wishing to join them, and from adults interested in volunteering.

WILL HOUSE PRICES KEEP RISING?

House prices soared during the Covid pandemic due to policies such as the stamp duty holiday and the new mortgage guarantee, as well as the ‘race for space’ which saw more people looking for bigger properties following the move to working from home.

Detached homes have increased by £68,000 since the start of pandemic, a 22 per cent rise, Nationwide says, with people working from home seeking out bigger properties.

One major outcome of the government’s measures taken during the pandemic was a shortage of properties, which has become a principal reason for asking prices rocketing up.

In March, Rightmove director Tim Bannister said that there are currently twice as many buyers as sellers, adding that “the imbalance between high buyer demand compared to low available property supply is the greatest we have ever seen for the start of a spring market.”

Nationwide revealed last month that annual house price growth rose at the fastest pace in 17 years.

Yet, the impact of soaring inflation, energy price rises and increasing interest rates could yet prove influential and make it more expensive to buy a house. The Bank of England has increased interest rates twice in the last four months, but will this really impact the housing market? Experts are divided.

What should you do if moving is a priority for you this year?

In our opinion, until more sellers take the step to market their home, the supply issue will only continue and may just lead to disappointment. When ‘the right one’ comes to the market you need to be ready to offer and, if this means you need to sell your house to buy, you could find yourself out of the race to be favoured.

It feels like a risk as you don’t wish to be pressured to find by having a buyer, as the selling side can be much easier than the finding – but without that leap of faith, it may just not happen at all.

Community supports new Wimborne garden Work has started on Wimborne’s new community garden.

On Friday 6 May, the Wimborne First School site – which will become Beaucroft College – had an empty school field outside it, but by the end of Sunday 8 May, it had the clear signs of the development of a community garden.

On 7 and 8 May, many hard-working volunteers of all ages turned up and transformed the field in to a garden with 12 dug beds for flowers, veggies, a large soft fruit area and a huge nodig section. A total of 10 cubic metres of compost was wheel barrowed and put on top of all the beds. The turf that was taken up was moved to the children’s area and transformed into magical grassy structures.

Spokesman Jane Benson said: “So we are now the proud owners of an amazing snake, a ponderous turtle and a fun doughnut ring. We also had volunteers potting up plants ready to go in the beds while others widened the access pathway through the ‘wild’ garden so that, when the paths are laid, it will be easy for anyone in a

wheelchair to access the garden too.

“We have had so much kindness and generosity shown to us from large companies like Dorset Soils, MB Wilkes, Home Instead, The Linwood Sawmill, The Green Man Pub in Wimborne, as well as a huge amounts of help and support from the Wimborne First Scouts, the nursery in Redcotts Lane, Year 9 students at Queen Elizabeth School, as well as countless donations from the public of tools and even a greenhouse and roofing felt. The name ‘Community’ says it all.

“It was a glorious weekend: the weather was on our side; the volunteers were extraordinary; we ticked off so many jobs but, maybe most importantly, we had fun and really enjoyed each other’s company. I think it’s safe to say, Wimborne Community Garden has begun and we can’t wait to see how we continue to grow and flourish.”

Folk festival celebrates 40th year The return of festivals and events has been perfectly timed for the Wimborne Minster Folk Festival, which will be celebrating its 40th birthday this year.

As usual, the town-wide festival will be held on the second weekend in June – this year from 10-12 June. There will be the usual array of music, dance, art and comedy across indoor and outdoor venues. Many of the performances will take place in the streets, so there will be plenty to see, while notable bands and groups will play ticketed shows.

The microbrewery will return, this time based in the Allendale Centre car park, and the usual plethora of market stalls will be in place once again.

of a Queen If you’re planning a jubilee party or get-together, this stunning celebration tart will fit the bill. Appropriate in theme, delicious in taste and deceptively easy to make, it is bound to wow your guests.

Union Jack tart with Mary Berry’s Honey & Balsamic Vinaigrette Preparation time: 10 mins Cooking time: 50 mins Level: easy Serves: 6

Ingredients:

1 pack ready to roll puff pastry 3 red peppers 4 red onions 180g soft goat’s cheese 1 egg for glaze Olive oil drizzle Honey for drizzling Green salad 6 tbsp Mary Berry’s Honey & Balsamic Vinaigrette

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C. 2. Chop the red peppers and red onions into medium size chunks (approx. 3cm x 3cm).

Place on a baking tray, each on its side.

Drizzle both with olive oil and the onion with some honey too. Cook for 20-25 minutes, until softened.

3. Meanwhile, prepare the pastry. Line a flat baking sheet with baking parchment and unroll the puff pastry sheet onto it. Prick all over the inside of the rectangle with a fork.

4. Then arrange the filling as you like (you can create the union jack as in the picture). Add the grilled peppers, onions and goat’s cheese and brush the sides of the pastry with beaten egg.

5. Bake for 15-25 minutes, until the pastry is golden and crisp.

6. Toss the salad in Mary Berry’s Honey & Balsamic Vinaigrette and serve the tart either from the oven or at room temperature.

Cost of living crisis changes driving behaviour The cost of living crisis is affecting drivers’ motoring habits, with research recently published suggesting 69 per cent of motorists have changed their behaviour since the beginning of the year.

The research, commissioned for Kwik Fit, showed that drivers have changed their behaviour in the following ways: 35 per cent have cut down on nonessential journeys; 14 per cent are driving more slowly on

their journeys; 17 per cent of drivers of EVs or hybrids have changed from a petrol or diesel vehicle in the past year; 11 per cent are opting to work from home more; and four per cent of drivers in the South West have sold their car and not replaced it.

Official government data on car use shows that, since January 2022, daily car usage has exceeded the equivalent pre-pandemic volume on only five occasions.

If there’s one thing we learnt during the pandemic, it’s how much we value our outside spaces and connection with nature.

While meeting up with others outdoors was a necessity, it has now become the norm, so it’s only natural that we are spending more time and effort creating our own outdoor living spaces to suit our interests and social inclinations.

You may have a small outdoor space or a large one. You might like to host large social gatherings, small intimate ones, or prefer to spend time alone in

your garden. You may be greenfingered and enjoy spending time pottering in your garden or a low-maintenance option might suit your lifestyle better.

Whatever your preferences, and budget, there’s plenty of options for making your outdoor space a place you love to spend your spare time.

Preparation Before you start work, it’s good idea to think about how you’re likely to use your outdoor space, and how it could meet your needs. Check the path of the sunlight at various times of the day, so you can make the most of it or provide shade. If you like to sunbathe, you’ll want to choose the most private, but sunniest spot for lounge furniture, whereas a shady spot might be more suitable to relax in.

Covered areas If your garden is in full sun, you may want to provide some shade. Awnings provide a solid shaded area that will also give you some shelter should it rain.

For more dappled light, try a shade sail. Or if you’re happy to wait for plants to grow, a pergola with climbing plants such as wisteria will give your outdoor space a more natural look.

If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, gas barbeques start at around £100, while you can pick up a charcoal one from about £20. Pizza ovens are popular, giving you tasty food in minutes – you can pick up one from around £150 or even build one for yourself, if you have the space available.

Set the scene Plants, wall decorations and lighting can all turn a bare, uninspiring outdoor space into a welcoming and inviting place to be.

Avid gardeners will be able to transform a dull garden by planting vibrant plants, bushes and trees, but if that’s not for you, a similar effect can be created using colourful planters with low maintenance plants.

Ask at your local garden centre for advice on the best plants for you if you’re short of time to look after your outdoor plants.

Garden wall art can give your space a little sparkle, or for a more dramatic effect, why not paint a wall or fence a vibrant colour?

Simple solar lighting can give your garden a cosy feel – choose either short lamps that sit in your flower beds or along your path, or indulge in some outdoor fairy lighting.

Keeping warm Even at the height of summer, you may find it starts getting cooler as the evening draws in. Make your garden a space you can use outside in the evenings for more of the year by providing ways to keep you and your guests warm.

Jubilee year for your garden As we move into June in this Jubilee year, the garden has become a place to help celebrate 70 years of Queen Elizabeth’s rule.

Individuals, clubs, and societies have all been planting trees to mark the Jubilee. Container grown trees can still be planted now with careful aftercare; watering is essential to aid establishment of a tree, which may go on to live 100 years or more. There are lots of colourful bedding plants in red, white, and blue.

Lobelias, geraniums, petunias, begonias and many more patio and basket plants are available to decorate your patios and gardens or street party celebrations.

Around the garden the planting of all your pots and baskets with summer bedding can be carried out well into late-June for a vibrant colourful display.
