Dear Readers!

I wrote my first editorial for Dorset View in July 2024. Two years and one month later, I am now writing my last editorial.

Yes, that’s right, this is my last issue as the editor. It’s been an amazing two years, but the time has come for me to move on.

Over the past two years, I’ve attended and photographed dozens of community events, festivals, markets and village fetes. I’ve been moved by Remembrance Day and D-Day parades and events. And I’ve seen and reviewed several incredible pieces of theatre by talented local performers (how happy those productions were with my reviews is a different story).

I’m particularly proud of interviewing several local politicians, helping Pulford Publicity launch a podcast and newsletter, raising awareness of important local issues, and establishing new columns and articles within these pages.

Working on this community magazine has opened my eyes to how much brilliant stuff is happening right on our doorstep, and how hard local councils, public services and volunteer groups work to make this area a great place to live.

It is easy to be cynical, to think there is nothing to do or that things can’t be better. But everyone I’ve met, interviewed and reported on is working hard to make things better for their community.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the magazines over the past two years, that you’ve learned something useful or cracked a smile at something I’ve written. And if not, well, the magazine will have a new editor soon, so please keep reading.

Thank you to everyone at Pulford Publicity for being great to work with, patient and helpful. It’s been a pleasure.

So farewell, thank you for reading and please enjoy this issue.

Residents fight local development plans

By Marilyn Barber | newseditor@dorsetview.co.uk Photo © Dorset View Two communities in Colehill are fighting plans for the inclusion of adjacent land in Dorset Council’s Draft Local Plan.

Due to the high levels of response from local people, the council extended its deadline to Friday 31 October.

Paula Edwards and her husband John, together with neighbour Sue Barber (no relation), who live in Greenhill Lane are horrified by a proposal to build 118 properties on land which houses a wide variety of wildlife opposite their 18th-century cottages. The land occupies 2.87 acres.

Paula said: “In 2006, the then Dorset County Council identified the land as a Conservation Area, not Green Belt.

“Everything else has to be developed before Conservation Areas.

If this proposal is not removed from the Local Plan, we will take it to the Planning Inspectorate. We will fight them.”

Sue said: “It has been so unnerving for us.

“It is a wildlife corridor and gets very wet and muddy in the spring.

Also most of the trees have a tree preservation order (TPO). The land also has access issues.”

John has recorded wildlife including fox cubs, badgers, deer and ponies on the land.

Paula added: “A total of 83 houses are proposed, which would result in at least 160 cars.”

The land, which is in private hands, was due to be auctioned on 23 July. It was originally owned by the National Trust, who sold it to a private land owner with overage. This means that the seller is entitled

to a payment of 50 per cent if the land is granted planning permission.

John has set up a website — greenhilloaks.com — with the aim of preserving and managing the land bordering Greenhill Road and Greenhill Lane.

In another part of Colehill, Steve and Judy Burrows who live in Olivers Way are concerned about the proposal to build 480 houses on Green Belt land which borders Bytheway Field and is visible from the back and to the side of their home.

Judy said: “The land was owned by the National Trust, who sold to ASN Capital around 2001.

“If it is developed, it will affect people living in Wimborne Road West and Cutlers Place and access will be from Olivers Way. It is the only boundary between Wimborne and Colehill.

“I am also concerned about the loss of wildlife, but particularly a man who has kept horses there for 20 years, who has been told to get off the land.”

Overage would also apply to this land.

Residents in other parts of Colehill have expressed dismay about the proposed inclusion of sites in their area. Organisations including Wimborne Civic Society have protested in the strongest terms.

Another round of public consultation will begin in August when the next version of the Draft Local Plan is published.

Walking the county lines of Dorset The High Sheriff of Dorset, Dr Helena Conibear DL, has set out on a 216-mile trek around Dorset’s border to raise awareness of county lines and child exploitation.

The High Sheriff is an unfunded, voluntary role appointed annually by His Majesty King Charles III. The role dates back over 1,000 years.

Dorset’s current High Sheriff is the founder of Talk About Trust, a youth charity that works across the UK to ensure young people make safer choices around alcohol and drugs.

Conibear has chosen the theme of ‘youth opportunity’ for her tenure as High Sheriff.

Throughout the year, she will visit prisons, attend court, accompany the police, fire service and coastguard, and meet grassroots charities to support, champion and highlight their vital services.

As part of her year in office, she is raising money for charity by completing the

216-mile walk around Dorset.

The walk began in Charmouth on 25 June and will conclude in Lyme Regis on 25 October.

Her aim is to raise £12,000 for 10 grassroots charities, including Future Roots, YMCA Bournemouth, Escape Line, The Front Skate Park and Dorset Youth. She has raised nearly half of her target; people can donate via crowdfunder. co.uk/p/walking-county-lineof-dorset-for-county-lines.

People are also invited to join her journey by walking a mile, a day, or a full stage with Helena, or by hosting or supporting her along the route. To join the High Sheriff, participants must raise a minimum of £50 in donations. For full details of dates and stages, visit her Crowdfunder webpage.

Dorset is consistently ranked among the safest counties in England and Wales.

However, like every county, it is not immune to serious and often hidden criminal activity.

The South West records a high level of drug-related deaths each year and saw 1,100 drug-related crimes in 2025, an increase of 14 per cent from the previous year. There are currently 19 known active county lines coming into Dorset, and authorities are working hard to shut them down.

The High Sheriff acknowledges how difficult this task is. When one line is closed, another often opens.

However, she believes that being proactive, raising awareness, speaking to those who are most vulnerable to grooming

and getting the message out to schools and youth charities can make a real difference.

Welcome back, swifts!

Schoolchildren from Witchampton First School’s eco team gave a presentation to pupils at St John’s First School in June all about the common swift, as the birds have recently returned to nest in Wimborne Minster, having completed a 6,000-mile journey from Africa to breed in the UK. A local conservation group, Wimborne Swifts, have hung a poster on the railings of St John’s welcoming back the birds, which nest close to the school.

Swifts are classified as a highconservation concern in the UK, as their population has declined sharply since the 1990s. Wimborne Swifts are urging the community to help swifts by putting up nest boxes on their homes.

Witchampton First School teacher Samantha Lloyd, who helps to run Wimborne Swifts, said: “The St John’s area of Wimborne has lots of swifts in it. The Wimborne Swifts was set up three years ago by nature lovers and birders from

Wimborne and the surrounding area to try and help the swifts, because they are on the conservation Red List for birds.

“They nest in little holes in roofs and buildings, but new builds haven’t got any holes. Since the 90s, the swifts have declined by over 60 per cent. So, Wimborne Swifts are trying to get people to put up nest boxes, survey how many swifts are around, and plant pollinator-friendly gardens that can provide food for the swifts.”

Lloyd praised both the eco team and St John’s schoolchildren. “The presentation was great. The St John’s children were fabulous and listened so well.”

Swifts are dark brown birds, recognisable for their curved wings making a boomerang shape in the sky, as well as their distinctive ‘screaming’ while racing around the sky.

An A400M Atlas

See RAF aircraft at local airport Plane spotters will be in their element over the coming months as Bournemouth Airport is to accommodate aircraft from RAF Brize Norton whilst improvement works take place at its base in Oxfordshire.

Bournemouth is one of several airports and military airfields across the UK which will provide a temporary home to the aircraft.

This includes the RAF’s A400M Atlas and C17 Globemaster fleets, which will operate mainly from MOD Boscombe Down in Wiltshire with Bournemouth Airport used when required.

Prestwick, East Midlands and Stansted airports are also being used for the RAF’s A330 Voyager fleet.

Steve Gill, managing director of Bournemouth Airport, said: “Having started life as RAF Hurn 85 years ago, Bournemouth Airport is pleased to be supporting the Royal Air Force while these important works take place at RAF Brize Norton.

“These temporary movements will not impact our passenger services.”

The aircraft are expected to operate from Bournemouth occasionally until the work at RAF Brize Norton is completed later this autumn.

Speed limits for Bournemouth Several areas in Bournemouth could soon become 20mph neighbourhoods.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council is inviting residents, businesses and anyone who regularly travels through parts of Moordown, Queen’s Park, Littledown, Springbourne and Boscombe to take part in a public consultation which will run until 16 August.

Between 2019 and 2023, there were 283 casualties from traffic accidents in these areas, of which 48 were serious injuries.

Across BCP, there are already more than 70 low-speed 20mph zones or limits in place; where 10 years of data is available, casualty accidents have reduced by an average of 40 per cent.

Cllr Richard Herrett, BCP Council’s Cabinet member for Road Safety, said: “A small reduction in vehicle speed can make a life‑changing difference. We know that if someone is hit at 20mph, they have a 97.5 per cent chance of survival, which is far higher than at 30mph.”

No final decisions will be made until all feedback has been analysed alongside technical data.

Cutting the ribbon at the new sculpture

Sculpture to mark life of Robert Louis Stevenson In 1884, writer Robert Louis Stevenson moved with his wife Franny to Westbourne, and his time there has now been marked with a new sculpture in Alum Chine.

To link the site and the sculpture, visitors are invited to walk in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson and find the ‘lost pages’ of his works, which have been placed on stone markers in Alum Chine.

The Stevensons’ house was named ‘Skerryvore’ after a lighthouse built by Stevenson’s uncle in Scotland. In the three years that he spent in Westbourne, Stevenson kept busy writing some of his most acclaimed work, including ‘Kidnapped’, ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ and

‘A Child’s Garden of Verses’.

Imagery and quotes of his literary works are depicted within the sculpture, inspired by engagement with the local community and children of St Michael’s C of E Primary School.

Artist Tim Ward of Circling the Square, said: “The Robert Louis Stevenson Sculpture along with the new landscaping will, I am sure, provide inspiration for people visiting the Alum Chine and become a positive landmark for Bournemouth.”

While the Skerryvore House no longer stands, the site can be visited as memorial gardens which include the layout of the Stevensons’ home and a sculpture of the Skerryvore Lighthouse.

NEWS IN BRIEF New chief constable

Rachel Farrell, who currently serves as deputy chief constable of Dorset Police is to be the new chief constable.

She will succeed Amanda Pearson, who retires later this summer.

Sports website

The Wimborne Sports and Active Leisure Forum has launched a new website designed to help residents discover local sports clubs, activities and wellbeing opportunities. It contains a directory of around 30 sports and active leisure organisations from across the Wimborne area. Log onto activewimborne.org.uk.

The Wimborne Open Gardens event in June raised more than £5,000 which will go towards the summer and autumn planting around the town and the watering. Wimborne in Bloom’s next event is the annual Duck Race on Saturday 29 August.

Tickets will be on sale in the town in the days running up to the race.

Councillor steps down

Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet member for Place Services has stepped down from his Cabinet role for personal reasons. A successor will be announced in due course, in time for September’s meetings.

Time to play in BCP Millions of pounds are being invested in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole play areas A £4.6 million investment by BCP Council will see improvements to 120 play areas across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Major refurbishment designs for Noyce Gardens, Mallard Road, Muscliff Park, Kings Park and Bourne Valley have already been announced, shaped by the ideas of local children, young people and families.

Cllr Sandra Moore, BCP Council’s portfolio holder for Play Strategy, said: “We’re making good progress with our play area refurbishments, and these designs are a shining example of the influence local communities can have.

“As a mum and a grandma, I am

incredibly proud of the work this council is doing to put high quality play areas back at the heart of our communities.”

Start dates for each site will be announced soon, as well as work at Anchor Close, Churchill Gardens, Hamworthy Park and plenty more.

Work is set to ramp up over the next six months, with a host of major upgrades and refurbishments at key sites.

Already this year, the team has completed a major refurb of Treasure Island in Canford Cliffs and made improvements at a host of sites including Beaufort Park, Kingston Road, Fenners Field and Moordown Rec.

Margaret Elizabeth Goringe of the Local Conservatives has been elected to Dorset Council to represent St Leonards and St Ives Ward. She polled 928 votes, beating Philip Leach (Reform UK) with 823 votes, Andrew Paul Barham (Liberal Democrats) with 629 votes and Mark Hamilton Keith (Green Party) with 68 votes. Voter turnout on Thursday 2 July was 37.45 per cent.

Ferndown fete praised as ‘best ever’ This year’s Ferndown Fete on the Field on 20 June was described as the “best ever” by sponsors, participants and members of the public. So, it is no surprise that the organisers, Ferndown and Parley Rotary CIO, are delighted with this year’s event.

Outgoing President Keith Adams described the Fete as a magnificent example of teamwork by the Rotary Club. He praised the hard work put in by Rotarians to organise and run the event for the Ferndown community.

Ideal weather resulted in large crowds attending and enjoying everything that the Fete had to offer.

Verwood Concert Brass kicked off the musical offerings, followed by Ferndown First School Choir, Charlotte Geary, Vocalize, The Swing Squad and RJ’s SoulCoaster. Forest FM were again supporting the event with announcements and live interviews all day.

New attractions including miniature steam trains, a climbing tower and cave, together with the fairground rides and straw maze provided lots to entertain children while parents explored over 70 stalls and catering facilities.

In the arena, the Liberty Raptors flying display proved to be a massive crowdpleaser once again, while the Urban

Cycles made a big impact — though thankfully not on the brave young lady in their performance.

The classic car exhibition also provided a popular attraction and enjoyment for Fete goers and exhibitors alike.

Fete on the Field is a free-to-enter community event organised by Ferndown and Parley Rotary CIO. Thanks to the sponsorship of Ferndown Town Council, Hearnes and Colten Care, as well as contributions from exhibitors and the public support for the famous “Wheelbarrow of Wine” raffle prize, the day raised an incredible amount of around

£7,000 for local and Rotary charities.

Planning for next year is already underway.

The Fete capped a successful June for Ferndown and Parley Rotary; only a couple of weeks earlier, club members raised and presented £5,500 to Forest Holme Hospice at their Charity Golf Day.

Ellie is Young Achiever of the Year A 14-year-old from West Parley is the winner of the 2026 John Thornton Young Achiever of the Year award. The bursary of £500 is funded by Wimborne Rotary in partnership with JTYAF. Trampolinist Ellie Tompkins has already used the award to assist her in entering an international competition, the 53rd Nissan Cup in Switzerland, where she qualified to the final in the 15–16 female category.

Ellie was part of the GBR Development Squad from 2022–2024 and was selected last year to be part of the England Junior Squad for 2025.

In July last year, she represented England at the Scalabis Cup in Portugal, where she qualified in fifth place, resulting in her first international final, and finishing in sixth overall. She then qualified to the English Championships in Coventry and reached the final. Ellie came away from the event winning her age group and becoming English Champion 13–14 Women 2025.

Then in October last year, she represented England at the Loule Cup where she made the top eight and qualified for her second International Final in second place. In the final she came third,

obtaining her first International Medal for England. Ellie also become Southwest Under 15’s Champion in the Southwest Closed Championship last December.

A slice of heaven in Wimborne

What a glorious month of visitors it’s been at the Wimborne Community Garden!

We were delighted to welcome so many guests from Valognes to our garden and to share stories of what did and didn’t grow in our respective soils. We relished in sharing the joys and frustrations of all a garden has to offer.

It felt as though we had only just waved them off when we were welcoming so many local guests for Wimborne In Bloom’s Open Gardens Day on Sunday 28 June.

During that day, we had countless visitors and thoroughly enjoyed having the time to chat to folk and listen to their thoughts. When asked if she liked what she saw, one lady responded with “This is

a slice of heaven for me” as she gazed at the wildflowers round the pond; this bed is a riot of colour as the ox-eye daisies, poppies, cornflowers, campions and so many more mingle together in a glorious, natural, colourful chaos.

Another guest commented on the wonderful movement of the swaying grasses in the Sensory Garden and left us determined to plant some in her own garden. The size of the onions we are growing drew some admiration, as did our strawberries and potatoes too. The wheat we’ve been growing also raised a lot of interest; we’ve grown this primarily so we can show our Brownie and school children visitors where their bread comes from.

Indeed, recently, the Brownies had a go at ‘grinding’ wheat with a stone on a piece of slate to find the flour inside. Then we tried to separate the wheat from the chaff… but because it was a still evening without a breath of wind, this was something of an experience as opposed to a success! At least we can hope we were successful in teaching the children the principle of where flour comes from.

Sadly, our August Fun Day had to be postponed due to the extreme heat we experienced. However, we will try again in September (date to be announced shortly) to which all scarecrows, and of course you, are welcome.

Mayor’s Musings A typical week at the end of June!

On Sunday 28 June, we saw Millstream Theatre’s new production ‘Nobody’s Home’: it was moving, well performed, and meaningful.

Monday 29 June was at St John’s School where I am the chair of governors — I met the School Council, who were articulate and energetic. Later, I presented flowers to a 100-year-old lady at Hyacinth’s Care Home.

Tuesday 30 June I was at Beaucroft College to see the Millstream play again.

I spent the afternoon judging posters for a school competition. The evening was council business: a HR committee and a full council meeting. At the latter, we updated councillors on some HR issues and heard from councillors on their linked roles.

Wednesday 1 July was a Wimborne Community Theatre committee meeting and a visit to Beaucroft College as a trustee of Wimborne Hospital to arrange some volunteering for the students.

with the Guide Dog association to plan some charity work.

The weekend was busy. On Saturday morning, we opened the Museum of East Dorset’s fete; in the afternoon, we held a Junior Mayor/Junior Town Crier competition at the Model Town. On Sunday, I went to a service at the Minster to commemorate the Battle of the Somme.

Art club partners with Town of Culture As part of the Wimborne Town of Culture 2026, Wimborne Art Club are holding two events in August. The first, organised in conjunction with Wimborne Community Garden, is a ‘Plein Air’ fun afternoon on Sunday 2 August. People are invited to ‘Come and Paint a Garden Banner’ at the community garden in School Lane. The event will run from 2pm–5pm. Materials will be provided and all levels, adults and children alike, will be welcome.

The second event is the summer art exhibition at Pamphill Village Hall from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 August. The exhibition will be open 1pm–4pm on Friday and 10am–4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Banners created from the community garden event will be on display.

Celebration of the Mothers’ Union Local people are invited to Wimborne Minster on 22 August for a fun event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the creation of Mothers’ Union The organisation was founded in the parish church of Old Alresford, Hampshire by Mary Sumner. She was a young vicar’s wife who dreamed of women, regardless of class or status, coming together in faith to support one another and strengthen family life.

From that vision, a global movement was born. Today, Mothers’ Union has around four million members in 84 countries.

Anyone can join. They work to improve the lives of individuals, families and communities around the world.

Thanks to archives in the Minster’s Chained Library, the Mothers’ Union at Wimborne Minster can be traced to 1884.

Currently, the local projects they are supporting are: operating a holiday home at Rockley Park for families in need; loaning schools virtual babies to enable students to discover the reality of having a baby; providing Christmas presents for prisoners to give their children; supporting the Women’s Refuge in Salisbury; and making baby blankets for Salisbury Maternity Unit and twiddle muffs for those with dementia.

The celebration event takes place between 10.30am and 4pm with family fun games, crafts and refreshments. A tea party will start at 2.30pm.

Find a safe place in Wimborne Anyone feeling anxious, lost, confused or overwhelmed and in need of support — regardless of age, demographic or support needs — can now find a Safe Place providing a friendly, calm location in Wimborne Minster.

The scheme launched by Wimborne Minster Town Council identifies Safe Place locations around the town with a window sticker and app.

The Safe Places scheme is already established in 58 regions covering more than 2,700 venues. People can download the free Safe Place app via Apple App Store or Google Play.

The town council is inviting more local businesses, organisations and community venues to join the free scheme by emailing projects@wimborne.gov.uk.

Expanded care funding for Dorset residents

The Twilight Walk in May, which attracted 213 participants, raised £13,080 for patients with breast cancer who have been supported by University Hospitals Dorset.

Dorset residents in receipt of Individual Service Funds are now able to choose an accredited provider to hold and organise their funding. This will give them more control over how their support is delivered without having to manage the payments themselves.

Residents who choose this option will be able to select from a much wider range of providers, with the council increasing the number available from six to around 40.

The new arrangements also allow people to tailor support around changing needs. Funding can also be set aside for short periods and used when it is most needed, offering more flexibility for people whose circumstances fluctuate.

Individual Service Funds were introduced under the Care Act as a way of delivering personalised care.

The changes also encourage greater use of local community groups and charities, helping people get more value from their support while strengthening community connections.

Residents interested in Individual Service Funds can speak to their care team or provider to find out if the option is right for them.

Support our hospice hike

By Luke Graham Julia’s House operates two children’s hospices in Corfe Mullen and Wiltshire. The distance between the two is around 60 miles.

To raise funds for this vital charity, which delivers care to Dorset children with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, a team from Pulford Publicity (the publisher of this magazine) plan to walk that same distance this summer.

Julia’s House is Pulford Publicity’s charity of the year. To support our chosen charity, the team will divide up the distance between the two hospices and walk that many miles each in one day.

The Connecting the Hospices Hike is scheduled for Friday 21 August. The team are planning to tackle an iconic route along the Jurassic Coast.

Charity of the Year

A holiday that means so much more

By Julia’s House As the sun shines and schools finish, many of us are looking forward to a trip away during the summer break. But for families caring for a seriously ill child, a holiday from home can feel impossible. There is often specialist medical equipment to pack, prescriptions to organise, accessible accommodation to find and, for many parents, the added pressure of reduced income because of caring responsibilities.

This is where Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice, steps in and helps the families it supports take a much-needed holiday to have fun, rest and recharge. Thanks to the generosity of the charity’s supporters, the life-changing respite care the hospice provides can also include the chance to enjoy a much-needed family break.

One of those special holiday destinations is a caravan at Hoburne Bashley Holiday Park in the New Forest, kindly lent to Julia’s House by IP database company, Lead Forensics. In 2025, 25 families supported

by Julia’s House enjoyed a break there, with 20 more families already booked in for this year. Other short breaks, donated

Making memories For Lucy, mum to Sully, Hoburne Bashley has given her family a holiday that felt safe, accessible and joyful. She said: “It’s so much more than just a caravan.

Local charity Plants and Minds, which provides mental health support via horticultural therapy, is looking to expand its Board of Trustees and appoint a new chairperson of Trustees. It runs Cherry Tree Nursery in Bournemouth and Chestnut Nursery in Poole. Following the government’s announcement last year that Healthwatch is to be abolished in 2027, Healthwatch Dorset is working to urge decision-makers to ensure that there remains a strong, independent mechanism for public feedback in the future.

Labour MP for Poole, Neil Duncan-Jordan, said: “Since its setup in 2013, Healthwatch Dorset has played a vital role in speaking up on behalf of local people, particularly those who face barriers to getting the support, information and care they need.

“Their independence is essential in scrutinising health and social care services and holding providers to account. Proposals to abolish the independent Healthwatch network are really troubling; we need to protect them and build on their success.”

Healthwatch Dorset says it will continue to engage with communities across the county and make sure those in power hear their views.

Projects for 2026/27 include access to Primary Care with a focus on the impact of new GP contracts and working with Mid Dorset Primary Care Network on Women’s Health. Healthwatch also plans to look at Special Educational Needs (SEND), women’s health, young people’s hospital experiences, breast cancer awareness and NHS communication.

Viv Aird, chairperson of the Healthwatch Dorset Board, said: “Thank you to everyone who has supported and contributed to our work, including those who have acted on our recommendations, and to all of you who have so generously shared your experiences with us in order to help to make services across Dorset better.”

The new school year

Help your child return to school with confidence, calm and balance As the long summer holidays gradually end, many families across Dorset will begin thinking ahead to the new school term. For some children this can feel exciting, but for others it may bring worries and uncertainty — particularly if they are moving to a new school, meeting unfamiliar classmates or adjusting once again to routines and expectations after the freedom of summer.

Over many years working with young people in education and sport, I have often noticed that children sometimes quietly carry anxieties which adults may not immediately recognise. Concerns about friendships, fitting in socially, coping with homework or simply feeling accepted within a new environment can all affect confidence before term even begins.

Parents themselves can feel anxious. Naturally, they want their children to settle happily, feel confident and make a positive start to the academic year.

One of the most valuable things families can do during the final weeks of summer is gradually rebuild calm routines, rather than creating unnecessary pressure. Encouraging reading, discussing worries openly, restoring sensible bedtime routines and preparing steadily for the return to school can all help children feel more emotionally secure.

Dorset families are especially fortunate to have beautiful countryside, coastline, parks, libraries and open spaces which provide wonderful opportunities for children and parents to reconnect before the busyness of term returns. Walks along the coast, visits to local libraries, discovering wildlife, cycling, outdoor play or simply enjoying relaxed family time together can often encourage some of the best conversations between parents and children.

Looking back, I still remember how much enjoyment and confidence I gained as a boy through outdoor life, libraries, sport and family activities. Those experiences helped develop my curiosity, communication skills and lifelong enjoyment of learning.

In my experience, children respond best when they feel listened to rather than constantly questioned or compared with others. Every child develops differently, and confidence rarely grows through pressure alone. Calm encouragement, reassurance and positive communication are often far more effective.

As both a teacher and private tutor over many years, including helping children prepare for Common Entrance examinations and school interviews, I frequently found that youngsters who enjoyed balanced lives outside the classroom often developed stronger confidence, curiosity and communication skills within education itself.

Education is important, but emotional wellbeing matters too.

When children feel supported, understood and valued beyond grades or exam results, they are often far better able to approach school life positively and confidently.

Sometimes the greatest support parents can offer before a new school term begins is not pressure to achieve, but calm reassurance, patience and the confidence that challenges can be faced one step at a time.

Keeping Dorset safe this summer

By David Sidwick | Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner Summer has arrived, and with it comes one of the busiest times of the year in Dorset.

We are incredibly fortunate to live in a county that millions of people choose to visit every year. Our coastline, countryside and towns are the envy of many, and I want everyone, both residents and visitors, to enjoy everything Dorset has to offer, safely.

The increase in visitors inevitably brings additional pressure on Dorset Police.

However, I want to reassure you that extensive planning has taken place ahead of the summer season. Officers will be out in our communities, conducting high-visibility patrols across our busiest areas with neighbourhood policing teams engaging with residents and businesses, and officers ready to deal quickly and robustly with anyone intent on causing trouble.

As your Police and Crime Commissioner, one of my priorities is ensuring Dorset remains one of the safest places in the country. I regularly hold the Chief Constable to account to make sure the Force is focused on the issues which matter most to residents, and I am clear that keeping people safe throughout the busy summer months is right at the top of that agenda.

That said, I have always been honest about the challenges Dorset faces. While

our population swells during the summer, the number of police officers available does not. Dorset Police continue to do an outstanding job despite being one of the lowest-funded forces in England; that is why I continue to lobby government for a funding settlement that properly reflects the seasonal demand placed on our county. Our officers deserve the resources they need to do the job asked of them.

Of course, most people who visit Dorset are respectful and make a positive contribution to our communities and local economy, and they are very welcome. But to the small minority who come here intending to commit crime, engage in violence or cause antisocial behaviour, my message remains simple: stay away. Dorset Police will not tolerate behaviour that threatens our communities; those responsible will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.

That commitment is being backed up with action. From seizing nitrous oxide cannisters from groups at the beach, targeting the illegal and dangerous use of e-bikes, tackling anti-social behaviour and keeping our town centres and public spaces safe for everyone, a tremendous amount of work is taking place across the county.

Officers have also taken part in another

successful Operation Scorpion recently, working with police forces across the South West to disrupt drug supply networks, remove drugs from our streets and protect vulnerable people from exploitation.

Supporting our rural communities is just as important. This summer, the Rural Crime Team is once again supporting Operation Recall, encouraging dog owners to keep their pets under effective control to prevent the devastating impact of livestock worrying. Mounted Rural Volunteers are also increasing patrols across our countryside, providing reassurance to rural communities and acting as valuable additional eyes and ears for Dorset Police.

Keeping Dorset safe is never something policing can do alone. Dorset Police continue to work closely with authorities including Dorset Council, BCP Council, Weymouth Town Council, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, Business Improvement Districts and many other partners to make sure we are ready for the challenges the summer brings.

Finally, I would ask everyone to play their part. If you see something that concerns you, report it. Together, we can ensure Dorset remains a safe, welcoming and enjoyable place to live, work and visit — not just this summer, but all year round.

Closing the gaps in safeguarding

By Vikki Slade, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole Most of us assume that a DBS check is a reliable safeguard for children and vulnerable adults. Yet in practice, the current system can leave dangerous gaps in protection.

Earlier in 2026, I secured a parliamentary debate on how we safeguard children and vulnerable adults through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) system. Over the years, I have undergone dozens of DBS checks, whether for employment in children’s services and adult social care or for volunteering with youth clubs or sports and uniformed groups.

The system is clunky and slow, relying on paper-based processes that are almost immediately out of date. Delays can hold up job applications, make it harder for community groups to recruit volunteers at short notice and create a false sense of security when it comes to safeguarding.

During my debate, I shared two cases where the system had failed. The first involved Louise and her husband Richard, who needed care in their home.

Louise arranged for a private carer to support them. Because she was not using an agency, she could not access the appropriate DBS information and

was unaware that the carer had previous convictions for theft. The carer went on to steal from them, and the trauma of the experience ultimately led to Richard moving into residential care.

The second case was raised by Paul, whose granddaughter tragically died from a drugs overdose. She had been introduced to drugs by an individual in a position of influence who did not have a DBS check in place. Because of restrictions in the current system, the family lacked information that may have helped protect their granddaughter.

In the weeks following the debate, changes were made to allow individuals to obtain enhanced DBS checks on people they directly employ and to give parents the right to see a DBS certificate for someone in a position of trust with their child. These are important improvements, but more reform is needed.

I met with the Safeguarding Minister to press for changes, including the creation of a digital DBS continuously updated with relevant information, and the introduction of a carers’ register to provide greater protection for people inviting carers into their homes.

I was also encouraged to submit proposals for a carers’ register to the Social Care Review being undertaken by Baroness Casey. I am confident these reforms could improve safeguarding while enhancing opportunities and recognition for those working in care.

A fully portable digital DBS would also help employers fill vacancies more quickly and make it easier for community groups, schools and sports clubs to recruit volunteers without unnecessary delays.

The DBS system has frustrated me for years, but my role as an MP has given me the opportunity to take those concerns directly to Ministers and Home Office officials who have the power to make change happen. I am grateful to Paul and Louise for allowing me to share their experiences. Their willingness to speak out is helping improve safeguarding for others.

If you have experienced difficulties with the DBS system, I would welcome hearing from you. Real-life examples often provide the strongest case for reform, helping us make safeguarding stronger for everyone.

THE FANCIEST OF GRASSHOPPERS

By Louis P About two or three years ago, I decided to leave a big square patch of uncut grass in the middle of my lawn, in the hope of attracting wildlife to the garden and creating a small eco system.

For the first year or so, I didn’t see much.

But then, earlier this year, I took a slow stroll around the garden patch, as I had noticed that there were many baby grasshoppers. To my surprise, a little pink oblong sprang out of the grass and caught onto a stem — it was a bright pink grasshopper.

“How fancy,” I thought to myself.

These very fancy pink grasshoppers are, in fact, standard grasshoppers with a genetic mutation caused by ‘erythrism’.

From my understanding, it is considered to be similar to albinism; erythrism affects the pigmentation in these grasshoppers to overproduce red pigments and turn pink.

Unfortunately, due to their lack of camouflage and fancy colouration, they are quite easy prey. At the time of writing this article, I am still spotting one regularly, but there were three when they were smaller.

Currently, the one I have sighted is maturing and getting bigger, so fingers crossed it will make it to full adulthood.

COME ON YOU REDS! Up the Cherries!

In the 2023/24 season, AFC Bournemouth under new coach Andoni Iraola finished the season with its best-ever performance of 48 points and getting to 12th place.

In 2024/25, under Iraola’s guidance, the team topped the previous year’s performance, reaching 8th place with 56 points.

In 2025/26, the team again outperformed, finishing in 6th place with a whopping 57 points and qualifying for European football for the first time in the club’s history.

The last season included some spectacular moments. The club tripped up Arsenal during its run at the title by beating the Gunners 2-1 in April at the Emirates Stadium, then managed to draw against Manchester City in the penultimate game of the season. Pep Guardiola’s City team had needed to win the match to contest Arsenal for the Premier League trophy. Out of 38 games in the Premier League, the Cherries won 13 games, drew 18 and lost just seven.

Iraola left the club at the end of the season and is now managing Liverpool. He leaves behind big shoes to fill for incoming head coach Marco Rose (read more about him on page 31).

At the end of July, the squad and its new coach travelled to the Austrian mountains near Salzburg for a training camp to prepare for the upcoming season. While in Austria, they played two pre-season friendlies against FC St. Pauli and Augsburg. In August, they will play friendlies against Genoa and Real Betis, and round off the preseason with a trip to Germany to face Mainz.

at home and four away. How the club performs will determine whether the Cherries qualify automatically for the Round of 16, enter a two-legged knockout phase play-off, or are eliminated from the competition. The draw for the league takes place on Friday 28 August, so we don’t know yet who Bournemouth will play later this year — the first matches are scheduled for 16–17 September.

In the meantime, the Cherries will be preparing for the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season on 21 August. In the next few pages, you can find the full details for all of AFC Bournemouth’s Premier League games, as well as extra news and information about this top local team.

AFC Bournemouth goes into the 2026/27 season with a new head coach After an incredible three-year run, Spanish coach Andoni Iraola announced in April 2026 that he would leave Bournemouth at the end of the 2025/26 campaign. He has since been signed as head coach of Liverpool.

Into his place steps forward German coach Marco Rose. The 49-year-old has never previously managed in England, but has extensive experience at the highest level of European football, including the Bundesliga (Germany’s equivalent to the Premier League), UEFA Champions League and Europa League. Rose lists coaching Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig on his resume. He led Red Bull Salzburg to two Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup; he also won the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup with Leipzig.

In his first season, he guided Borussia Monchengladbach to a fourth-place finish and qualification for the Champions League, where the club progressed through the group stage to the knockout rounds of the competition.

According to AFC Bournemouth, Rose is known for his high-energy style, attacking football and ability to improve young players. Cherries’ fans can expect an energetic, front-foot style of football, with the teams playing more aggressively without the ball, pressing high up the pitch and looking to win possession quickly before attacking at speed.

Rose is well-placed to lead AFC Bournemouth into its fifth consecutive year in the Premier League and its first campaign in Europe, and fans will be wishing him luck at the start of his threeyear contract.

GROUNDBREAKING STADIUM Work has begun on the redevelopment and rebuild of the Cherries’ Vitality Stadium

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 30 June. President of Business Operations Jim Frevola was joined by President of Football Operations Tiago Pinto and local dignitaries including local Labour MP Tom Hayes to mark this milestone occasion.

Speaking during the ceremony, Frevola reflected on the importance of the occasion.

He said: “This marks the beginning of the next chapter in our club’s history.

“This redevelopment is about creating a stadium that’s worthy of our supporters. Our vision is to preserve everything that makes Vitality Stadium special – the atmosphere, the intimacy and the connection between the players and supporters – while creating a modern home everybody can be proud of for decades to come.”

The ceremony also recognised the collective effort behind the project, with thanks paid to BCP Council, project partners and contractors, alongside the many people who have helped bring the redevelopment to life.

The redevelopment will see the capacity of the stadium increased from 11,286 to 20,200. The South Stand will be demolished and replaced with a new grandstand accommodating around 7,000 football fans. The West Stand will be refurbished with new player facilities and hospitality areas. Meanwhile, the other stands will be extended to add approximately 1,200 seats in the North Stand and 1,700 in the East Stand. The previously open corners of the stadium will be filled to increase general admission capacity.

Construction will be ongoing during the upcoming season, but the club promises it has planned to minimise disruption and allow the stadium to remain operational.

New coach Marco Rose isn’t the only change to the team ahead of the Premier League kick-off.

Bournemouth has retained the majority of the club’s first-team squad, but some familiar faces from last season will be missing.

Defender Marcos Senesi left the club at the end of his contract and will play for Tottenham this season. Meanwhile, Spanish defender Alex Jimenez, who joined the club in September 2025 and made 32 appearances last season, is being loaned to Italian team Fiorentina. And earlier this year, striker Antoine Semenyo left the club in January to play for Manchester City.

Goalkeeper Fraser Foster, who joined the club on a short-term contract in January, has signed a new one-year contract with Bournemouth. He brings a wealth of experience to the Cherries, having won the Scottish Premier League four times with Celtic and won the Europa League with Tottenham.

The club’s first new signing under Marco Rose is Elche striker Alvaro Rodriguez.

Bournemouth has agreed to pay up to £25.7m for the 21-year-old player, who scored seven times in Spain’s La Liga last season, including against two top teams: Barcelona and Real Madrid.

A parade led by the Band of the Royal British Legion marched through the streets before arriving at Fisherman’s Walk for the colourful event.

There was a whole host of entertainment on the bandstand including Retro Rita, The Land Girls, the Aphrodite Singers, Andy Kennet as Elvis, RockStep retro dance company and Bovington Military Wives Choir.

A dedicated Military Village brought together military

organisations, cadet groups, charities and support services from across the region.

A collection of vintage traders, makers and artists as well as a history hub added to this important date in Southbourne’s social calendar.

Several local people got into the spirit of the event with 1940s, 1950s and 1960s outfits.

The Athelhampton Art Gallery is to host an exhibition during August and September from an artists’ collective known as the Wider Circle.

This is made up of poet James Sale, multimedia artist Angela Perrett, calligraphy artist Judith Warbey, mixed media artist Linda E Sale, and digital artist Mark Burden. Each artist has created work inspired by poet James Sale’s books of poetry, ‘The English Cantos’. Summer fireworks across BCP Stay safe at the beach Speak to a lifeguard or LV= KidZone team member to collect a free wristband

The skies over Bournemouth and Poole are to once again be lit up with the start of the summer fireworks series along the seafront.

At Bournemouth Seafront (east of Bournemouth Pier), fireworks will be set off at 10pm on Fridays 24 July until 28 August.

On Poole Quay, there will be music and entertainment from 7.30pm with fireworks at 10pm on Thursdays 6–27 August.

Cllr Richard Herrett, portfolio holder for Destination, Leisure & Commercial Operations at Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP) Council, said: “I encourage everyone to come along, make the most of the vibrant atmosphere, and take time to explore and support our excellent hospitality venues before enjoying a fantastic display.

“I’d like to thank Bournemouth Coastal BID for their contribution in funding the programme.”

Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, use public transport where possible, park responsibly and respect the coastline to help keep the area safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Once again children and vulnerable adults should be safe on beaches across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

BCP Council’s KidZone beach safety scheme, in partnership with LV=, operates from now until 31 August across the conurbation’s 15 miles of coastline.

Families and guardians can collect a free wristband on which to write their mobile number and give it to the child to wear. If the families become separated, the information on the wristband can help them be reunited quickly.

BCP Council Seafront Rangers and RNLI Lifeguards will be supporting the scheme throughout the summer by handing out wristbands to people who request them. Wristbands are also available for collection from all seafront offices and RNLI lifeguard towers across the BCP seafront.

Visitors are reminded that if they see a missing child or vulnerable person, they should immediately report this to a member of the LV= KidZone team wearing a blue shirt, a BCP Council seafront ranger — typically wearing a bright pink t-shirt — or an RNLI lifeguard, so that swift action can be taken.

Get ready for Christchurch Carnival A free, three-day event hailed as one of the South’s oldest community festivals will feature a programme of live music, theatrical treats, a firework spectacular and attractions for all the family.

Christchurch Carnival takes place from 14 to 16 August. As part of the festivities, Christchurch Quay will be covered with funfair rides, a free climbing wall, stalls and local food vendors.

On Saturday, there will be live music from local bands Persona, Underground Badgers and One Word. Back by popular demand, DJ-Ing (Mark Ingram) will perform an energy blasting disco set for all the family. Headline performers are tribute acts to Taylor Swift (Fearlessly Taylor) and Green Day (The Green Day Experience).

Away from the main stage, family entertainment will include Punch & Judy performances by Professor Gary Wilson, circus skills workshops, arts and craft tables, and many other free activities.

Then on Sunday, the Street Parade will bring the party to the streets of Christchurch for a fabulous finale. The 1.5-mile route will showcase the very best of the local community.

Summer road safety reminder Dorset Police are urging people to drive safely this summer, warning that the biggest killers on the roads in the county are the fatal five: drink and drug driving; excessive and inappropriate speed; not wearing a seatbelt; driver distractions such as using a mobile phone; and dangerous or careless driving.

Inspector Lee Turner, of the Roads Policing Team, said: “We know that the vast majority of people use our roads respectfully, but there are some who still ignore the law and that is why we are shining a light on road safety to ensure everyone can have a good, safe summer.

“The warmer weather sees an increased number of people using our roads, including vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.

“Each of the fatal five is caused by a motorist’s own error of judgement taken when in control of a vehicle.

“We will be taking action against anyone who is found to be endangering other road users. This is something we do all year round and will be continuing throughout the summer to prevent tragic deaths on our roads in Dorset.

“Please drive and travel within the law — we all have a part to play in keeping ourselves and each other safe.”

Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: “I’ve heard direct from victims and their loved ones about the lifechanging consequences of drug and drink driving and their experiences are a stark reminder that a single poor decision behind the wheel can destroy lives.”

Ideas for cooling your home this summer We have experienced several heatwaves already this year, and August is likely to stay just as hot. But there are steps you can take to make your home a little more tolerable when the mercury is rising.

Close your windows Sounds counterintuitive, but the key to staying cool is keeping the heat outside of your home.

Keeping windows closed during the daytime prevents hot air blowing into your house, keeping the air inside your home at a more reasonable temperature.

Draw the curtains and blinds in rooms facing the sun, to prevent sunlight warming up the air inside.

External window shutters can help with this, as they prevent any sunlight getting into the room or warming up the air between the window and the inside curtains. They can also look quite stylish, adding a rustic charm to a property.

Unfortunately, you will need planning permission from the council to install external shutters as they change the appearance of your property.

A low budget option is to simply drape a long cloth, fabric blind or bedsheet over your windows.

As the temperature cools in the afternoon, you can open windows to allow a breeze to travel through the house.

Fan favourites How best to use your standing electric fans?

Pointing a fan at your face can feel great, but according to expert advice reported by the BBC, it is only giving you “thermal comfort” — you feel cooler, but you’re not actually cooling down.

Instead, point your fan at your body, and keep it far enough away so that air movement is occurring across your whole body. This will help with your sweating to carry heat away from your body.

Placing a bowl of ice or water in front of a fan can help cool your home, as the evaporation of water from the bowl takes heat out of the air.

Instead of standing fans, consider installing a ceiling fan. These can look modern and stylish and provide cooling whenever you need it. You may need an electrician to safely install larger ceiling fans. It’s possible to buy small ceiling fans that screw directly into your existing light bulb socket, so require no DIY skills.

To air con, or not to air con?

Anyone who has tried to buy a standing air conditioning unit the past few months will know that demand has outstripped supply. Be careful when buying online that you are purchasing from a reputable retailer that will deliver the goods.

We bought a standing unit back in 2020. It is bulky, heavy to move and difficult to store, but it is one of the best investments we have made.

Whenever temperatures rise too sharply, we know we can quickly cool a room with it. Make sure doors are shut, as it is most efficient at cooling one room at a time.

Feed the end of the hose out of a window, then draw the blind or curtain and enjoy.

If you want to install air conditioning in your home, there are several companies in the local area who can help. Prices have spiked due to demand, so wait until late autumn or winter; prices should be lower and your home will be ready for next summer.

Arrr!

Pirates take over Poole Quay

A whole Arrr-my of pirates descended on Poole Quay on Saturday 20 June to mark Harry Paye Day. Organised by the Pirates of Poole, the fundraising event celebrates Poole’s maritime history and encourages visitors to don their best piratical outfits. The quay was covered in pirate-themed decorations and stalls.

After a midday pirate parade, there was a fancy-dress competition for the best pirate outfit. Meanwhile, a live cannon was fired to mark each hour.

Visitors enjoyed live music, food and drinks from the various pubs and kiosks along the quay.

The day is named after Harry Paye, a privateer from 1400s who intercepted

hundreds of French and Spanish ships to avenge an attack on his hometown.

The Pirates of Poole have celebrated Harry Paye Day since 1926; this year marks the 100th anniversary of the event.

One of the organisers, Brian March, said: “Thank you to everybody who helped out at Harry Paye Day 2026 for all your hard work.

“So far, I’ve heard nothing but excellent feedback (aside from one person who said that the cannons scared their dog).

“The pirates of Poole could not exist without everyone’s help and hard work.

Rest assured we are already planning the rest of this summer’s shenanigans.”
