Welcome to our May magazine. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everybody who has contributed to our Dorset Chamber online auction, raising £11,242 for the Disaster Emergency Committee Ukraine Appeal. We are over the moon with this, and I’d like to thank all the businesses that so generously donated items and experiences for the auction as well as those that have bid for the lots in the auction. I would also like to say a special thank you to my colleague Hayley who has worked so hard on this behind the scenes. We are all horrified at what we are seeing in Ukraine, and you’ll hear about the great support being offered by Help from Bournemouth to Ukraine in this edition. In my conversations with businesses over the last few weeks, I am also aware of many incredible donations that have been quietly made by local businesses. Looking to matters at home, many businesses are obviously extremely concerned at the spiralling inflation we are experiencing and in the last Quarterly Economic Survey, 77% of businesses

responding to the survey cite inflation as a growing concern. As well as the crippling increases in energy prices, we are also seeing the cost of raw materials soar, as well as increasing costs of living for us all. This is also causing upward wage pressure on businesses. We are of course pushing the concerns of businesses to the British Chambers of Commerce who continue to lobby Government on behalf of businesses across the UK. If you’ve been particularly hit by this, please do get in touch with me. Help from Bournemouth

to Ukraine I recently had the opportunity to visit the From Bournemouth to Ukraine relief operation being run from Castlepoint, collecting and sending out vital supplies to the many people that have been displaced and affected by the terrible conflict in Ukraine. There are many supporters behind this incredible project including volunteers, businesses, MP Tobias Ellwood and Castlepoint. Many people will have followed Paul Tansey and Mike Browne’s recent trips to Poland taking out supplies on behalf of Help from Bournemouth to Ukraine and this has helped promote the tremendous work of the volunteers behind this fantastic project. Paul asked me to join him to visit the collection centre, based in the former Argos store at Castlepoint and to meet Karol Swiacki, who’s leading the operation. The centre is run by volunteers, including Karol, who has been working tirelessly to try and help support those so cruelly affected by this terrible situation. We were greeted with a warm smile as Karol took us through the centre, explaining how it all worked. The front end of the former store is the drop-off point for donations from the general public. They have been overwhelmed with the kindness of people 4

who have been donating items so desperately needed. This includes blankets, sleeping bags and tents, clothing, hygiene and medical supplies and first aid equipment. Through a quickly established network and with the help of other volunteers and businesses and of course vital connections in Poland and Ukraine, Help from Bournemouth to Ukraine are then transporting these supplies directly to the people that need them, ensuring the supplies reach those that are most in need. This includes taking the supplies over the Polish border into Ukraine itself. As we walked around the centre, Karol spoke with emotion as he described why he and the Polish community felt so strongly that they needed to try and do something to help. It’s clear that Karol and his team have been giving this 100% for weeks and weeks and so much has been achieved. This is something they are absolutely passionate about and are making a difference. As we left the centre, Paul commented to me that Karol and his colleagues, all volunteers as I’ve said, have established an efficient collection and international distribution model far more quickly than many businesses could have done. /company/dorset-chamber/

Auction bids opened for Ukraine appeal TV personality Martin Roberts and Dorset businessman Paul Tansey told of ‘heartbreaking’ scenes on the Ukraine border at the opening of a charity auction for humanitarian aid. The duo met at a refugee camp while on separate mercy missions delivering medicines, supplies and emergency relief. Martin, star of TV’s Homes under the Hammer, and former chamber president Paul spoke at an emotionally charged opening of bids in the auction. The online auction gathered over 50 items, which included a signed AFC Bournemouth shirt, VIP tickets to the Bournemouth Air Festival, holidays and hotel stays, surf lessons, a laptop, signed cricket bat, an Audi A5 cabriolet for the weekend, lunches, dinners, afternoon teas, fashionwear, events tickets, hampers and more. Ian said: “We had so many great lots up for the auction, thanks to the generosity of so many individuals and businesses. “The money raised will help save lives and relieve the suffering of people fleeing this horrific war. “It is easy to feel powerless in such situations, but this is a way of really making a difference. Paul and Martin’s moving first hand testimonies about the situation on the ground on the Poland-Ukraine border really hammered home just how desperate it is there.” Paul, who is chief executive of the Poole-based Intergage Group, travelled to the border to deliver two lorry loads

of aid after linking up with the From Bournemouth to Ukraine charity. He told of his experiences at the border with some ‘heroic’ volunteers helping refugees and risking their lives to drive aid into Ukraine as well as some horrific stories of children travelling alone to Poland and others dying overnight while queuing at the border. He added: “You’re not the same guy when you come back after seeing those lives in bits.” Martin praised Dorset for its fundraising efforts, including the chamber and From Bournemouth to Ukraine. He said: “It was heartbreaking at the border. “I saw children exactly like my son and daughter who had lost absolutely everything. It just strikes you in the face. “People are crossing the border not knowing anything about what is ahead of them and what the rest of their life holds. “They arrive at the refugee centre and are wrapped in so much love and support, and that is where what we are doing makes so much difference. “On one hand it will help save lives but also lets them know that the world hasn’t forgotten about them.” Martin added: “This is a moment in history when we must pull together. “What the chamber has done is absolutely amazing and will massively make a difference.”

We need to redefine what a marketplace is Cas Paton, Founder and CEO of OnBuy Napoleon’s famous critique of the British is often quoted, but it was Adam Smith in his work The Wealth of Nations, who originally described Britain as a nation of shopkeepers due to the unique strength and influence wielded by SMEs and merchants. It speaks to the entrepreneurial spirit of our nation and is no less true today than it was 250 years ago, and this is something we should wear with pride. What started out as merchants selling local goods at crossroads has seen a huge evolution through towns and villages, to town centres, shopping centres and most recently, online has begun to take centre stage, with an almost limitless variety of products to choose from. The proliferation of online channels presents an array of different brands and retailers, selling across a variety of ecommerce platforms. For consumers choice is no bad thing, but for online sellers looking for sustainable long-term growth, this plethora of options does present its challenges. The events over the past two years have led to a boom in online retail, as more consumers were forced to abandon their old shopping habits and any retailer that wasn’t already online was scrambling to get there. But with increased competition and retailers being squeezed for all they’re worth, online marketplaces have become less about facilitating an exchange of goods, and more about enriching the experience for both the consumer and retailer to be successful in their endeavours. It’s time we redefine what an online marketplace is and what exactly its purpose is in a world where ecommerce dominates. Straddling the line between marketplace and retailer In order for a marketplace to give sellers an equal opportunity to grow, it needs to provide them with an equal way to reach customers. Amazon is notorious for having its own products promoted on its retail platform as a “recommended choice”

ahead of other brands, even if those items don’t meet its algorithm’s criteria for being listed in that position. In fact, the retail giant will often use seller data to determine which products and categories are selling well in order to create their own Amazon-branded versions, essentially using retailers to conduct their own market research. This exercise is a far cry from the level playing field that should be standard practice for any online ‘marketplace’. The only way for retailers to compete with such tactics is to lower prices and succumb to other Amazon services, such as FBA, in an industry that already has some fairly slim margins to begin with. This puts retailers between a rock and a hard place when it comes to how they want to operate, and unfortunately, can cause many to close up shop because they just aren’t able to compete. Customer and retailer centric Any marketplace, whether it’s online, or physical, should work in the best interest of their customers and that means both the seller and buyer. They need to be respected as partners but this hasn’t been the case for a while on some platforms. Amazon always touted its marketplace as being the best thing for retailers and customers but was found in a recent report to be taking and ever-increasing slice of the transaction. It even raised fees in January citing rising operations costs, despite it becoming its most profitable and fastest growing segment. Ebay’s own recent increase in fees goes further to penalise sellers whose sales are considered below standard, something that will likely only exacerbate any problems they’re having selling on the platform. Fee structures can be complicated, leaving many retailers trying to figure out exactly what it would cost for them to sell on certain platforms, and how to price their goods. Higher fees result in higher prices on goods as retailers often must pass that cost on to consumers in order to stay profitable, and with sellers being dependent on the big players, they have no choice but to accept the price hikes. How did we get to this point? Surely instead of penalising sellers and trying to wring as much revenue as they can out of them, marketplaces should be providing them with the insight and data needed to grow as this benefits all parties. Success for a marketplace should and quite frankly must be an outcome of the success of those selling on it. /company/dorset-chamber/

Back to the fundamentals We’ve come a long way since the birth of online marketplaces, and it is inevitable that platforms will adapt and evolve. However, the core purpose should remain the same, and that’s where the industry has strayed. By definition, a marketplace is the system of a buyer being able to find the item they wish to purchase and then by default a retailer, meeting that need, in a fair and competitive environment. It’s assumed that the marketplace itself is not the competitor! It should exist to give retailers the opportunity to sell as many of their products as possible, at prices that are fair to consumers. Only when marketplaces return to these original principles will this nation of shopkeepers be able to enjoy a fair, transparent playing field. www.onbuy.com

Southampton makes UK City of Culture 2025 final

Future with Ferndown 50 Planning permission has been granted for a new distribution and storage warehouse in East Dorset. Property consultancy Vail Williams, a Dorset Chamber member, has been appointed, jointly with Realest, for Ferndown 50 at Ferndown Industrial Estate, Ferndown, near Bournemouth. Development of the 53,600 sq ft leasehold unit, on a 2.37-acre site at 45 Cobham Road, which was previously used as a yard by building materials supplier Travis Perkins, is due to start this summer. Completion is scheduled for March 2023. Bournemouth-based Haycock Holdings is the owner and developer of Ferndown 50 and recently leased an adjacent two acres of open storage to Keyline, a supplier of civils and drainage materials to the construction industry. Bryony Solan, as Associate at the Bournemouth office of Vail Williams, said: “Commercial demand for quality distribution and storage space is strong – we are confident that Ferndown 50 will be sought after by discerning companies. “Furthermore, given the cost of energy, Ferndown 50 has a targeted energy performance certificate of A – the highest rating available, meaning potentially lower running costs for the occupier. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

I am delighted to announce that after two years of sustained work and stiff competition, our neighbouring city, Southampton has made it to the final four in the running to become the UK City of Culture 2025. The applications saw a record 20 locations apply, with eight making it to the longlist, down to only four for the shortlist. Southampton is joined by Bradford, County Durham and Wrexham, and the winner will be announced at the end of May. The city owes a huge debt of gratitude to so many people for this achievement. Along with the backing from the City Council, thousands of people have supported the bid – not just in the communities of Southampton but across the wider Solent region, including our own BCP Council. The bid for Southampton to become UK City of Culture for 2025 has brought the city together, embracing the world of creators, children and young people, artists, academics, businesses and civic leaders. I’ve been honoured to work with the team at the bid and to have seen first-hand the hard work and relentless long hours put in from a very small but passionate team of talented people. AFC Bournemouth team up with Beryl AFC Bournemouth are encouraging greener travel by launching a new partnership with the UK’s leading micromobility company, Beryl. On board for the remainder of the current season and across 2022/23, Beryl are now a regional supporter and executive partner of AFC Business. With 900 bikes and 250 e-scooters located across Bournemouth for the community to use, Beryl’s aim is to remove the barriers to cycling that exist, helping to cut congestion and carbon emissions while improving public health and the region’s air quality. The whole idea behind the partnership is to support both the club’s and Beryl’s missions to encourage those at the club, as well as supporters and the wider community in Dorset, to adopt more sustainable forms of travel. Beryl will look to do this by promoting

health and well-being through Community Sports Trust initiatives, as well as engaging with the local business community through AFC Business events. They will also get involved in the rapidly growing women’s setup at the club, facilitating an all-female course for senior women’s team players and staff and collaborating with them on campaigns next season. are a huge part of the fabric of the local community and we are delighted to be joining forces with them to help encourage even more people to take up two-wheeled transport. “We’ve been delighted with the response we’ve had from users since launching our local scheme back in 2019, having seen riders make over 691,000 journeys over a distance of more than 2,558,000 km using our bikes and scooters. “Based on industry research, we believe that this takeup has led to a saving of almost 94 tonnes of carbon dioxide - a significant environmental impact - and we’re looking to build on this further through exciting partnerships such as this.” Bikes and e-scooters can be hired through the Beryl app, available for free download on the App Store for iOS, and the Google Play Store for Android users. They can be picked up and dropped off in marked ‘Beryl Bays’, which have been delivered both in partnership with the local authority and in consultation with communities and key stakeholders to ensure they meet the needs of the community. Move to electric cars given boost with government EV infrastructure strategy The government’s long-awaited strategy on EV infrastructure has now been revealed with motorists set to benefit from a tenfold expansion in public chargers. In December 2021 more than a quarter of all new cars sold in the UK were battery electric vehicles and there continues to be massive investment in vehicle technology and new electric cars being launched. It is against this backdrop that the government says it expects a minimum of 300,000 public chargers by 2030 with these installed ahead of demand to inspire confidence in drivers who have not yet made the switch. “No matter where you live - be that a city centre or rural village, the north, south, east or west of the country, we’re powering up the switch to electric and ensuring no

one gets left behind in the process,” said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps. Hendy Group chief executive Paul Hendy welcomed publication of the 138-page report which he says will help give motorists the confidence they need to make the switch to EV. “We know that many people do want to make the switch to electric power but have said that a lack of public chargers has been a barrier to making that change,” he said. “This infrastructure strategy addresses this issue, and we look forward to the plan becoming a reality.” The report sets out the government’s plans for a £450m fund for councils to

fund on-street chargers and local hubs for electric drivers who don’t have driveways. It also says that drivers should be able to pay for charge points using contactless payment and it will be mandatory for charge point operators to provide real-time data about their charge points and prices and meet a 99 per cent reliability standard. International airport takes shape with REIDsteel

British structural steel firm has completed work on a multi-million-pound development to create an international aviation hub for west Africa. John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd (REIDsteel) provided design, steel fabrication and supervision services for the ‘ultra-modern’ terminal building at Kumasi International Airport in Kumasi, Ghana. The 130-strong business manufactured the steel structure in Christchurch, Dorset, before shipping all the component parts more than 3,300 miles to Ghana. It also provided the roofing system to comply with a specific noise and thermal reduction specification and the high-specification glazing, including ‘statement’ curtain-walling for the elevations of the building with solar controls to withstand extreme sunlight and temperatures. Other elements included cladding, canopies, steel personnel doors and automated entrances. The 12,500 sq m terminal – including passenger and VIP lounges, customs zone, departure gates, baggage handling and security – is at the heart of the €125 million (£104 million) airport development. It will be able to handle more than one million passengers annually. REIDsteel, which has exported to more than 140 countries to date, has completed its phase of works with main contractor Contracta Construction UK Limited, progressing towards

REIDsteel commercial director Tim Cook said: “This is one of our most prestigious projects of recent years in Africa. “We were pleased to be able to provide an innovative solution, including value engineering, to reduce the amount of steel used in the structure and save cost for the entire building envelope, including glazing. “It is a privilege to be involved in such a landmark development which will help transform the region, boost the local economy, help open up this region of Ghana to international travel and place Kumasi on the map as one of the premier international aviation hubs in west Africa.” He added: “The terminal has an ultra-modern design and is looking stunning already. The finished development will be among the newest and most state-of-the-art in Africa.” The redevelopment, which is being built by Contracta Construction UK Limited, also includes car parking, roads, and an extension of the runway from 1981m to 2300m to accommodate larger aircraft. REIDsteel used 350 tonnes of steel, 7000 sq m of roofing and 3500 sq m of glass for the

building. Steel products were sourced from REIDsteel’s primary long-term supplier base in the UK. The elevations were constructed using aluminium curtain walling with large glass panes. It sloped out at five degrees to avoid interference with the airport’s radar, all detailed and fabricated by REID Glazing. More than 900 glass sealed units were used, made to an extremely high specification to achieve the necessary pane sizes, withstand wind loading and meet acoustic requirements. The largest glazing units weighed more than 300kg each. REIDsteel also provided eight large glass rooflights, each 3m wide by 42m in length. REIDsteel, founded in 1919, is a four-times winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is responsible for Kumasi International Airport operations along with all airports and aerodromes in Ghana. Inflationary Pressures Reach Uncharted Territory

The BCC’s Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) for Q1 2022 - the UK’s largest independent survey of business sentiment and a leading indicator of UK GDP growth –shows inflationary pressures on firms reaching levels never previously recorded in its 33-year history. The survey of over 5,600 firms also revealed a continuing stagnation in the proportion of firms reporting increased domestic sales and investment, while cashflow weakened slightly in Q1. Business activity 42% of respondents overall reported increased domestic sales in Q1, down from 45% in Q4. 18% reported a decrease, up from 16% the previous quarter. In the services sector, the balance of firms reporting increased domestic sales dropped to +21% in Q1, from +26% in Q4. In the manufacturing sector, the balance of firms reporting increased domestic sales was +24% in Q1, up from +22 in Q4.

When firms were asked what pressures, they were facing to raise prices, from a list of factors, 92% of manufacturers cited raw materials, 56% cited other overheads (the majority of respondents comments related to energy costs and transport costs), 34% cited pay settlements, and 19% cited finance costs. When asked what was more of a concern to their business than three months ago, 77% of firms cited inflation which was the highest on record and a rise from 66% in Q4. The percentage citing interest rates as a concern also rose in the quarter. Nearly 1 in 3 (32%) reported interest rates as a concern, up from 27% in Q4. Cash Flow & Investment Indicators for both cash flow and investment have shown no sign of recovery since the start of the Covid-19 shutdown. For firms overall, 28% reported an increase to cash flow, a drop from 31% in Q4. 26% reported a decrease, up from 23% in Q4. Investment in plant, machinery, or equipment continued to stagnate, with 27% overall reporting an increase, while 58% reported no change, and 15% a decline. This metric remains largely unchanged since Q2 2021. “Our latest survey lays bare the huge financial stress that firms across the country are under. The level of inflationary pressures has soared to record levels and we are now truly in uncharted territory. Firms cite cost

increases coming at them from all angles, ranging from energy bills to raw material prices and the imminent rise in National Insurance. Teenage cybercrime: How to stop kids from taking the wrong path When we talk about cybercrime and children, it’s often in the context of protecting the young ones from online dangers. That could mean ensuring our kids’ devices have the right parental control software set up, so that the children don’t access dangerous or inappropriate content. The same goes for making sure they have anti-malware installed and privacy settings properly configured. But what if a child turns out to be the ‘bad guy’? It’s more common than you might think, including because at an early age, many kids don’t realize that their ‘black hat’ activities are illegal (as opposed to ‘white hat’, also known as ethical, hacking). The good news is that, even if you suspect your own children may be using their technology skills for nefarious ends, it’s not too late to steer them on the right path. And there are many legitimate avenues to channel their cyber-savvy and ultimately help them start a career in cybersecurity. When computer hacking is child’s play While this all sounds like the plot from a Hollywood film, the reality is more mundane. In fact, school-aged hackers are increasingly commonplace as the tools and techniques to commit cybercrime become cheaper 22

and more easily accessible. Some kids have displayed an astonishing grasp of technology and threat techniques in their attacks, while others may simply be curious to see how far they can push things. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) said that data from its National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) showed a 107% increase in police reports from 2019 to 2020 of students deploying DDoS attacks. The median age for referrals to the NCCU’s “Prevent” team is reportedly 15, and a recent NCA report revealed that children as young as nine have been caught launching DDoS attacks. However, instances of children engaging in cybercrime are not confined to DDoS attacks.

Following decades of campaigning, the Divorce Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 has finally brought an end to ‘fault based’ divorce. On April 6th, 2022, ‘No Fault Divorce’ officially became law. The main objective of the legislation is to make the process smoother and avoid what had become, in many cases, a counterintuitive exercise. Under the previous ‘faultbased’ divorce, couples had to wait two years and rely on the ‘two-year separation’ in order to avoid attributing blame to each other. If the parties wanted certainty by way of a financial order reflecting what they had agreed, and certainly if there was any pension sharing/earmarking of pensions accumulated, then one of the parties would have to be the “wronged party” either through suffering unreasonable behaviour or citing adultery of the other party. Parties who had drifted apart and felt it was better to accept this, rather than let matters get worse, were told that one of them had to be blamed. More often than not, this added unnecessary tension and friction between the parties. It was often a shock to clients that because they remained married even after separation, relationships with someone new could be adultery. Often both parties had moved on and were beginning new relationships. Divorce lawyers working with their clients are now able to end ‘the blame game’. This year’s conference will address Ofsted’s findings last year that 92% of girls, and 74% of boys, said sexist name-calling happens a lot or sometimes to them or their peers.[i] Add to this the discovery that 56% of university students have been the recipients of unwanted sexual behaviour[ii], the startlingly low rape conviction rate in the UK of just 1.6%[iii] and the fact that one in three UK women will be beaten or sexually assaulted at some point in their lives[iv] (usually by a family member) and we see an alarming picture that betrays the prevalence of misogyny and ‘rape culture’ in our society. “This year we are aiming to reach at least 200 schools and expect an audience of around 20,000 young people,” says conference director and founder of Beyond This Peter Radford. “Growing awareness in schools around this issue has to be the first priority if we are to establish long term cultural change and

The advantages of Inheritance Tax Planning As Dorset financial expert Peter Harding explains, there comes a point in life when thoughts turn to what happens after we’re gone, with this likely to include considering how best to pass on any assets we may have. The importance of planning often begins with Inheritance Tax (IHT) planning. While few estates actually pay IHT, the 40% tax charged on assets above the nil-rate band and the Residence Nil Rate Band makes it a risk not worth taking. When you’re trying to come up with a plan for passing on wealth, traditionally it’s about trusts, property and so on but people are increasingly using their pension pots. A pension has long been one of the most tax-efficient ways to pass on wealth. For example, if you die before you turn 75 and you haven’t accessed your pension, your beneficiaries can receive all of it tax free, provided they claim it within two years of your death. It’s important to get to grips with the pension rules and ensure you’re using them to your advantage. You could also consider gifting. This is money you can give away while still alive to reduce the IHT bill, so it should be part of your tax planning. For example, you can give away a total of £3,000 worth of gifts each tax year without them being added to the value of your estate (and you can use the previous year’s allowance, too, if you haven’t already). MSP Capital signs for AFC Bournemouth’s football boot recycling scheme Property finance lender MSP Capital has joined the team behind a campaign to enable more disadvantaged football players in the community to take part in the sport. The principal partner and front-of-shirt sponsor of AFC Bournemouth is collaborating with the club and, for the first time, insurance company Vitality to launch Bring Your Boots. The aim is to encourage members of the public to donate pre-loved boots or trainers to families throughout Bournemouth who would struggle to pay for new ones. It comes after research revealed that nearly one in five families financially impacted by the pandemic said they would struggle to send their children to grassroot clubs because of the cost of replacing outgrown boots and other items of kit. Martin Higgins, Managing Director of MSP Capital, said: “We’ve always seen our partnership with AFC Bournemouth as a way to not only support our local team but the local community as well. “Bring Your Boots is all about helping to provide vital opportunities for those children who are passionate about playing football but whose families can struggle to pay for kit. “Now is the time to dust down those trusty boots that served you so well in the past and give them a new lease of life for someone else to enjoy.” The donations will directly help those who are unable to afford new trainers or boots in the local community through the club’s Community Sports Trust, which operates various projects designed to help both adults and children take part in physical activities. According to a Utilita State of Play Report released in October 2020, of the 74% of families who admitted to being financially impacted by the pandemic almost a fifth (18%) said they would struggle to pay for upgraded playing kit for children returning to grassroots football.

Research conducted by the Learning and Work Institute has estimated that in England by 2030 there could be 5.1 million low-skilled people chasing 2 million low-skilled jobs; 12.7 million people with intermediate skills chasing 9.5 million jobs; and 17.4 million high-skilled jobs with only 14.8 million high-skilled workers. HMRC calls on businesses to get ready to move to new customs declarations processing system from 30th September 2022 On the 24th March, HMRC announced that it was starting the process of communicating with all trade businesses on the forthcoming changes. The Customs Declaration Service (CDS) will become the UK single customs platform after 31 March 2023, replacing the Customs Handling Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system. Ahead of the complete closure, the import declaration function will be withdrawn on 30 September this year. The CHIEF system will close in two phases: Phase one: After 30 September 2022 the ability to make import declarations will end Phase two: After 31 March 2023 the ability to make export declarations will end

Frontier Declarations and Immediate Payments will be settled using: • Deferment account • Cash account • Personal or corporate debit card or corporate credit card • General guarantee account • Individual guarantee More detailed information can be found on the UK Government’s CDS Finance Fact Sheet.

HMRC is urging declarants to take advantage of help offered to start the migration to the Customs Declaration Service now – either by working with a software developer or Community System Provider, or by accessing the help themselves to get ready to move to the Customs Declaration Service which could take up to six months depending on the scale and complexity of the business. Dorset Chamber are making their customers aware of the forthcoming changes, as there is much for them to do – i.e. new guarantee for a single duty deferment account and authorising clearance agents to use it via the account holder’s government gateway account. Also, there is more data required to complete a customs declaration as per the below figures: CHIEF – up to 68 boxes required for an import CDS – up to 76 data elements for imports CHIEF – up to 45 boxes used for export CDS – up to 65 data elements for exports CDS requires a more extensive data set than CHIEF. While there are consistencies between several of the key CHIEF/CDS Code Lists, such as Documents, Licences and AI Statement Codes, there are also some which differ, e.g., Port codes. In addition, a number of new CDS code lists will be introduced. Payment processing The way declaration payments are processed will also change in CDS, and you will need to make changes to your current payment methods for the following: Duty Deferment Account holders will need to complete a new Direct Debit Instruction. However, you should not cancel your original Direct Debit Instruction. This will still be needed for deferred declarations made in CHIEF or other systems, i.e., ATWD, VAT 908. Flexible Accounting System (FAS) will not be available for CDS and is being replaced with a new cash account. Mental Health Awareness Week | 9th – 15th May This year’s theme is focussed on loneliness. This subject was brought into sharp focus during the pandemic, when many people were unable to go out and socialise with others. For people living alone it was a particularly difficult time. The week will raise awareness of the impact of loneliness on our mental wellbeing and the practical steps we can take to address it. Reducing loneliness is a major step towards a mentally healthy society. We continue to run events that highlight mental health and provide opportunities for people to connect and share their stories and ways to build resilience. Last month we hosted our second GU6 event, sponsored by Lester Aldridge, which was another great success. Our fantastic speakers were uplifting and informative in equal measure. We continue the 48

Bournemouth Airport launches official cargo operation, Cargo First Bournemouth Airport is cementing itself as the fastest developing cargo airport in the UK, and the one of the country’s newest trade links, with the official launch of its dedicated cargo handling service, Cargo First. From a standing start with almost no cargo in April 2020, Bournemouth Airport will see 20,000 tonnes of throughput by the end of March 2022, which makes it the fastest growing UK cargo hub based on 2020 statistics, and on the verge of breaking into the UK’s top ten busiest cargo airports. The Airport is playing a central role in enabling commercial exports from the UK to the USA with European Cargo Limited, which now operates a fleet of wide body cargo aircraft. It also provided relief during the Covid-19 pandemic, bringing in hundreds of millions of items of PPE and test kits to the UK. Andrew Bell, CEO, Regional & City Airports, says: “The launch of Cargo First consolidates

the critical work of the team at Bournemouth Airport during the past two years. Titan Enterprises Celebrates Over 40 Years of Innovation Continuous innovation is a priority for the manufacturing industry to maintain a strong footing in an economy that is under constant flux. Over the last 40 years, Titan Enterprises has provided optimised liquid flow metering solutions for a diverse range of industries and process applications, its design and engineering expertise being fundamental to the company’s success. Established in 1981, Trevor Forster, Managing Director of Titan Enterprises, founded the company with the aim of producing modestly priced, high-quality, low flow measuring devices for OEM customers. Trevor recognised from the outset that improvisation and creativity were the key to securing their footing in the market, delivering affordable and lasting solutions that resolved issues for their customers. “In the early days we made our own flow rigs from a laboratory balance with control electronics provided by a friend,” Trevor recalls, “and we used low-cost aluminium tooling until we could afford fully hardened steel ones.” “More than once we’ve been told ‘You can’t do that’, but we’ve just done it anyway! The way we work with customers from research, development, through to production has enabled us to solve a lot of OEM application issues,” Trevor adds. “Through that process, we’ve helped customers decrease their assembly times, improve efficiency, and provide extra functionality.” Titan’s R&D is primarily driven by customers looking for solutions that will support their specific applications and deliver more efficient, reliable and accurate results. R&D projects could be anything from testing new materials for longer life, chemical inertness, robustness, testing under high pressure or temperature or software development. Paxman Coolers, Stored Crop Conservation and Green Fuels,” Trevor says. “Our USP is our flexibility, adaptability and ability to work with customers to understand their applications and find workable solutions.” In 1986, Titan was approached by the Virgin Atlantic Challenger II team. They were searching for a flowmeter manufacturer who could supply a device to measure their fuel consumption on their Trans-Atlantic Blue Riband attempt. We developed a unique hybrid inserting one of our Pelton wheels into the throat of a venturi meter which proved to give an acceptable overall pressure loss and excellent linearity. Richard Branson completed the crossing in the Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, in three days, eight hours and 31 minutes, beating the 1952 record set by the United States. Work on developing a viable, accurate ultrasonic meter began in 2001 when Titan commissioned The Cranfield Institute of Technology to develop the device in collaboration with our own R&D team. The resulting patented ultrasonic technology led to an expanding line of Atrato® ultrasonic flowmeters which had the adaptability to provide solutions for a number of OEM issues. Trevor reflects: “From the outset in 1981 I wanted a non-invasive flow measurement solution and our patented ultrasonic technology is giving us that.” “We also did some extensive pioneering work with a USA medical company to produce a disposable ultrasonic flowmeter that would measure the volume of liquid manually injected into a patient,” Trevor continues. “We are currently extrapolating our technology for use in other applications where, for example, it can reduce downtime for cleaning as the ultrasonic meters have no moving parts.” In 2014, Titan was approached by a Formular 1 racing team to design bespoke flowmeters for two very niche applications: direct fuel and engine oil flow measurements were required for the F1 racing cars. For the fuel system, Titan developed an ultra-lightweight oval gear meter capable of being safely housed inside the fuel tank itself and submerged in the fuel. F1 vehicles typically run without cooling fans so measuring

the oil flow on engine test required a flowmeter accurate to 200oC with no undue pressure drop. Both modified oval gear flow measurement designs provided accurate flow measurement, whilst housed directly in or around the noisy electrical environment of the F1 vehicle. “We do not shy away from spending on Research and Development. Industry doesn’t stand still and investing in R&D is paramount to us staying ahead of the game and taking advantage of the latest technologies. Our R&D spend is 20% of our turnover where the norm is 8-10%,” Trevor says. The focus technology for Titan at present is our ultrasonic liquid flow measurement devices. Taking our Atrato® ultrasonic flowmeter product design understanding, we have pushed both electronics and physical design to improve the overall performance window. We have recently launched our new software interface for the Atrato, greatly improving its functionality. Trevor concludes, “When you are confident in your own capabilities, willing to take a few risks, invest resources into R&D and know what your customers and market want, taking on challenges can be very fruitful.” It is this extra investment and ongoing high R&D spend that will see Titan Enterprises at the forefront of their sector for years to come.

25 years of Expert Conveyancing for 2,500 happy families She’s helped more than 2,500 families successfully move into their dream homes…and even assisted in the rescue of a hibernating tortoise after a move! In 25 years at Coles Miller, Conveyancing Executive Pam Coniam has helped buyers and sellers to overcome all manner of challenges. In the case of the sleepy tortoise, it had been in deep hibernation in a garden shed…oblivious to the fact that its Bournemouth owners were in the process of moving house. They didn’t want to wake the tortoise in midhibernation because doing so could have disrupted its metabolic processes. So, Pam had to draft a special clause in the conveyancing contract, enabling the family to collect the tortoise from their former home once the sleepy reptile had finally woken up. It’s all part of the Coles Miller service: “I enjoy helping people to buy and sell property and move into the home of their dreams. It’s like putting together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle,” said Pam. She’s a little shy about revealing when she first started

working in conveyancing – but it was at a time when everyone was still using typewriters (albeit electronic ones with a bit of memory). It’s a far cry from the custom-developed software she uses now at Coles Miller’s Bournemouth office. Much has changed in conveyancing in the last 25 years with online delivery of services making the process much faster and more efficient. In that time, the price of the average UK property has shot up from £118,908 to £273,762. Prices have risen by 9.6% in the last 12 months alone, according to March 2022 HM Land Registry data (based on transactions to January 2022). Two team members of Investment Management firm based in Bournemouth, have signed-up for their very first corporate sponsorship challenge, to abseil down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower and raise money for Forest Holme Hospice. Investment Manager, Matthew Hull, and Business and Marketing Manager, Katie Land, have decided to take on the 100m abseil challenge in July to raise money for the Poole-based hospice, which they describe as “close to all our hearts”. Speaking about their reason for supporting Forest Holme Hospice, Katie said, “At O-IM we’re particularly passionate about supporting the local area, and not only do we aim to support the lives of adults in Dorset who are facing a life-limiting or terminal illness, we equally hope to build a lasting relationship with Forest Holme Hospice.” The abseil is a joint partnership between Forest Holme Hospice Charity in Poole and the Macmillan Caring Locally Charity in Christchurch, to help enhance the NHS provision at both hospices, which collectively provide palliative and end-of-life care from the Isle of Purbeck in West Dorset right across to Ringwood in West Hampshire. The abseil experience is described as an amazing adrenalin rush with unmissable views across Portsmouth harbour, the Solent and the Isle of Wight. For Katie and Matthew though, this experience will certainly be taking them out of their comfort zone. “Our day-to-day business is all about helping clients to effectively and confidently navigate their investments”, Chief Executive Lewis Hamm explains, “but trying to navigate a 100-metre descent down the side of this landmark building is a whole different proposition”.
