a decade p8-9 Celebrating with Dorset Chamber

Hello and welcome to our first edition of 2024. Incredibly, Dorset Business Focus is now officially 5 years old with the first edition published in January 2019. It seems hard to believe where the years have gone but we are extremely proud of the magazine, Dorset’s only printed business monthly. We’ve always worked hard to ensure the content is relevant, positive, interesting and reflects what’s going on in the Dorset business community. I’d like to say thank you to our publishing partners Pulford Publicity for their great support over the years and thank our Dorset Chamber editorial team Caroline and Greg who do a great job with Ben and Louis from Pulford Publicity in producing the magazine each month. Content is selected from news releases our members upload to the Dorset Chamber website – so don’t forget this is one of the key benefits of your membership. I am sure many are pleased to see the New Year after a challenging 2023 with the continued crisis in Ukraine, the impact of Covid still lingering, the energy and general cost of living crisis, continuing high inflation and significant increases in interest rates. Things do seem to have settled with inflation peaking at 11% in 2022 and the Bank of England now holding off on further interest rate increases as their primary weapon against inflation. Confidence generally seems to have improved, firms in most sectors seem to be busy although we still see business closures and challenges clearly remain in certain sectors – there is no room for complacency. We will continue to do our absolute best for the Dorset business community. This year will see some exciting new Dorset Chamber events, including our new Directors Network as well as Experience Events for our members. Our events continue to sell out and we’ll shortly be publishing the dates of all events for 2024 so you can pencil them in your diary. October 2024 will also see the return of the Dorset Business Festival, including the acclaimed Dorset Business Awards. This year also marks our 75th anniversary and we’ll be celebrating this throughout the year as well as featuring in our May magazine in advance of a special 75th Anniversary Presidents Ball on 27th June. Talking of anniversaries, our December AGM marked 10 years to the day that I joined Dorset Chamber and we will be looking at the achievements of Dorset Chamber over that time. This month our cover story is all about data – increasingly vital in every business as a key driver – thank you to all our contributors and we hope you find this of interest. May I wish you a happy and prosperous 2024 and we look forward to working with you in the year ahead.

Enhancing Business Efficiency:

Exploring Key Technologies and Tools In today’s fast-paced and competitive business landscape, staying efficient is pivotal for success. Dorset Chamber spoke to Jonathan McHarg at Platinum Business Partner’s, Enhanced, to find out more about the tools and technologies available for businesses of all sizes. Jonathan McHarg, Head of Managed Services said: “Leveraging advanced technologies and tools has become essential for organisations aiming to streamline operations, optimise workflows, and boost productivity. Among the array of solutions and tools available, there are some which have immense potential in improving both day-to-day and long-term efficiency.” Cloud based Finance System Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software integrates various business processes and functions into a centralised system, offering a unified platform for managing resources, operations, and data. From finance to supply chain and inventory management, ERP systems facilitate seamless communication across departments, providing real-time insights and enhancing decision-making. For businesses in the Warehouse and Distribution sector, you can integrate your WMS (Warehouse Management System) with your ERP solution to reduce manual processes, increase accuracy and support the overall productivity. customers. They consolidate customer data, track engagements and nurture relationships throughout the sales cycle. By analysing customer behaviour and preferences, businesses can personalise interactions, improve customer satisfaction and boost sales. There is a wide array of CRM tools available in the marketplace, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the multitude of distinct features they offer. At Enhanced, we recommend using a platform that easily integrates with your other IT systems such as Microsoft Dynamics. Microsoft Teams Phone Microsoft Teams Phone, integrated within the Microsoft Teams platform, offers robust communication capabilities. It enables voice calls, video conferencing, and instant messaging, fostering collaboration among teams regardless of geographical barriers. With features like call routing and voicemail, it enhances connectivity and accessibility for remote or distributed teams. Microsoft Scheduling Poll Microsoft Scheduling Poll simplifies the process of scheduling meetings by allowing users to propose multiple meeting times and gather participants’ /company/dorset-chamber/

availability. This tool eliminates the hassle of back-and-forth emails, streamlining the scheduling process and saving time for both organisers and attendees. Embracing these technologies empowers businesses to optimise operations, increase agility, and make datadriven decisions. They can significantly enhance a business’s efficiency. These tools not only streamline operations but also foster collaboration, improve communication, and save valuable time. As technology continues to evolve, businesses must adapt and harness these innovative solutions to stay ahead in today’s dynamic marketplace. Enhanced support businesses across a range of sectors, helping them reach their potential through the power of tech. The use of data in UX Toby Pestridge, Creative Director Spyrosoft Ltd

If you wanted to tackle a DIY job in your home, and wanted to see how it should be done without blowing yourself up, there’s a high chance you’d use YouTube to learn from an expert (or at least a very keen amateur!). Searches beginning with “how to…” on the video hosting giant are growing 70% year on year, and it shows that people are keen on carrying out decent amounts of research before taking things into their own hands. It could be argued that YouTube is one of the world’s largest repositories of research data – people attempt things, make mistakes, change their process, try again, succeed, and share the results. Good user research is the bedrock of successful digital product design, and the benefits extend far beyond making an interface look pretty. The role data plays in user research for product design cannot be overstated, as this critical stage ensures that time and money are directed towards creating products and features that resonate with target audiences, addressing their genuine needs and providing frictionless experiences. We gather this data in a number of ways, according to the type of data we need, and the ways in which we need to analyse it. In an ideal scenario it’s gathered in person, either face to face or via a video call. As an example case study, let’s say we want to test two different approaches to showing a user an important notification message in an app. There are several ways to do this, so we’ll roughly design some options and then work with the user research team to write a test script and arrange calls with users. The script writing is a fine art, because we need to make sure we ask everyone the same set of questions, but also allow users to express their opinions. Questions need to be open and not lead the user down a specific route or risk affecting their responses. If the resulting data across all test candidates doesn’t match – we can’t accurately report on it. The data we gather from this process is key to decision making, and can have huge downstream impact on a software development project. Good data, gathered properly and analysed closely, can save time and money by reducing risk, building confidence, and guaranteeing that what is being designed Good user research is the bedrock of successful and built is what users actually need. The old adage “measure twice, cut once” is close to the hearts of all user digital product design, and the benefits extend researchers, and will be something you hear a lot on YouTube DIY videos, too!

Legal Considerations Relating to Cyber Security and Cyber Insurance The National Cyber Security Alliance reports that one in five small businesses will experience a data breach, with over half of those affected having to close their doors because they cannot recover from the financial consequences. Even a relatively minor cyber security breach can cost a business dearly, including investigative and legal fees, loss of business, loss of data, downtime, inaccessibility to data, restoration of systems, and time and money spent on damage limitation. Sensitive data may be exposed, stolen, or held to ransom, and the business could be held liable under data protection laws if it is found to be in breach of the relevant laws and that breach caused a data breach. Therefore, the costs of a cyber security breach are too significant not to be taken seriously. In this article, we consider cyber insurance as a way to get some protection from a cyber attack, together with other points to consider. Have you got protection? Business owners could be left footing the bill for damages from a cyber breach without appropriate cyber insurance. Cyber insurance policies can be customised to an organisation’s specific needs, but reviewing policies carefully and periodically is crucial. Cyber insurance can be very bespoke. It should not be just assumed that it will cover everything. Cyber attacks are evolving continuously and a business could easily fall victim to a new type of threat that may not have existed at the time the policy was taken out. You should check with your broker whether you will be covered in that situation. Most cyber insurance policies are re-

assessed every 12 months. The onus is on you to ensure that your organisation’s cyber security details are accurate and current with your insurer. If you claim security measures are in place when they’re not, the insurer may not be obliged to pay any claims. It is, therefore, important to communicate well with your IT team, whether internal or external, to ensure that the technical measures are appropriate and notified to the insurer as required under the policy. Some insurers will supply services that are invaluable when a cyber incident strikes. These can include IT forensic services, legal assistance and public relations support. Your insurer may put you in touch with a Cyber Incident Response organisation or their own in-house cyber incident response team. If you find that option under your policy is too expensive, then you might find the NCSC’s Incident Management guidance helpful in thinking about how to plan, build, develop and maintain an effective cyber incident response capability. As well as cyber insurance and an incident response plan, you should have a disaster recovery plan and a business continuity plan in place so they can be enacted should the worst happen. Consider also whether you provide sufficient training to staff for cyber security and data protection, as a large percentage of data breaches are caused

by human error. Taking technical, physical, and organisational security measures should also assist a business in avoiding a cyber attack and complying with its legal obligations under UK legislation, including data security and data protection. For further information on legal issues relating to cyber security, please do not hesitate to contact our Corporate & Commercial team by emailing online.enquiries@la-law. com or calling 01202 786188. Ian Girling hosting the prestigious Dorset Business Awards 2023 at the Hilton Bournemouth

Celebrating a decade with Dorset Chamber The Dorset Chamber AGM and Christmas lunch on 7 December 2023 marked a decade to the day that Ian Girling became Chief Executive of Dorset Chamber. Here he shares some of the highlights and milestones of his ten years in the role I still recall my nerves at having to make my inaugural speech at the AGM and then again to a bigger crowd at our lunch event. It was a daunting prospect and I felt very apprehensive but also incredibly proud and honoured to have this position. When I was interviewed for the role, I had a very clear vision for our Chamber; to become a modern, inclusive and engaging Chamber for the future. Over that time I have set about delivering that vision. I’d like to reflect on some of our achievements over the last 10 years. It’s been a period of huge

uncertainty. In that time, we’ve seen 5 Prime Ministers, 8 Home Secretaries, 6 Chancellors and I’ve served under 8 Dorset Chamber Presidents. In the last 4 years we’ve also experienced Brexit, Covid, the invasion of Ukraine and a cost of living crisis. One of my first tasks was to build links with town Chambers across Dorset to strengthen the voice of business and we now have Associate relationships with most town Chambers in Dorset. In 2014, after several clandestine communications with the Cabinet Office, we were asked to organise and host a visit with then Prime Minister David Cameron. Given just two days’ notice to bring 100 people together only with the knowledge it would be an event to remember, we packed

out the venue. I met the Prime Minister at the event and with only a few minutes notice, was invited to speak on stage with him. There was widespread media coverage and regardless of politics, I felt immensely proud of our Chamber with the positioning and PR this gave us. One important step for me was repositioning our then ‘Patrons’ to ‘Business Partners’. To me, the term ‘Patrons’ felt old fashioned and the rebrand to Business Partner, a far better articulation of the dynamic and active relationship we have. These are longstanding relationships over many years and our Business Partners are positioned as Champions of our Business Community and our Chamber. I’d like to record my thanks to our Business Partners for their great support. By 2016, Brexit was clearly on the agenda. We held a major conference with expert speakers to discuss and attempt to comprehend the implications of leaving the EU. This was a groundbreaking event exploring a highly political and controversial subject and we received widespread media coverage). We approached both local authorities and were successful in securing funding to deliver a Brexit Advice Service, offering advice and support on the issue to any Dorset business. In 2016, we launched our Young Chamber programme, helping build links between education and business in preparing our young people for their future careers. The programme ran for 3 years and many employers, young people and schools in Dorset were involved and benefited from the programme. As we modernised as a Chamber, it was clear our office needed to reflect our new approach and vision. In 2016 our office had a complete refit in our brand colours of magenta, white and blue and continues to offer a fresh, modern and bright environment to our team and visitors. In 2018 we successfully tendered to deliver the Dorset Gateway Service on behalf of the Dorset LEP, a valuable business

advice and signposting service, reinforcing our position in the centre of the Dorset business community The Gateway served a huge number of businesses over 4 years, providing particularly vital support to so many businesses in distress during the pandemic. As we evolved, it became clear it was time for a rebrand. Working with our Business Partner Digital Storm we launched a new, contemporary brand and lost the “of Commerce and Industry” in our name. The new brand and logo bedded in seamlessly and still looks great today. 2019 saw the launch of a new monthly printed magazine - Dorset Business Focus. This glossy coffee table publication appears in venues and offices across Dorset. Featuring content supplied by our members it is an important platform in telling the stories of the incredible businesses we have in Dorset. The following year saw further success in tendering for business support programmes with the award of a contract from Dorset LEP for the delivery of a series of Peer Network programmes, open to businesses across Dorset. With highly relevant and topical content, bookings were strong and the programmes filled quickly. Early in 2020, Covid hit. Quickly recognising the risks we were the first Chamber in the UK to suspend our events programme in March, stating we would return in June. Incredibly it would be 577 days until we did another in-person event. We moved our events online and saw a tremendous response, with upwards of 100 people regularly attending. Those events provided a great opportunity for people to connect, catch up and mutually support each other. The sense of community and friendship in a crisis was incredible. With several of my team furloughed and others all home-based, I spent a year alone in the Chamber offices and it was during this time that I began to record videos for sharing on social media, explaining the support and

guidance that was available for businesses during this incredibly difficult time. The videos gained huge traction and were welcomed by the business community. I ended up recording around 50 videos and people still sometimes comment to me how helpful they were. I believe we were possibly the most visible Chamber of Commerce in the UK during the pandemic. Back to work, 2021 saw our acclaimed menopause awareness campaign, raising awareness for both men and women on the impact of the menopause on women in the workplace. The campaign took the form of events with experts for both women and men “Let’s Talk About the Menopause” as well as a social media campaign, articles in the media and people being honest and sharing the impact of the menopause on them. The campaign was an incredible success and we were hailed as leaders in tackling and talking about what still is a highly taboo subject. 2022 saw us focus on ESG and wellbeing. With support from both local authorities, we ran a series of events all covering different aspects of ESG. We also launched our GU6 programme, supporting the positive mental wellbeing of our business leaders who can so often be overlooked. Huge thanks to our wellbeing sponsor Lester Aldridge. 2023 was also another great year for Dorset Chamber. We launched the Future Leaders Forum with the support of Mazars, a specific forum to support the personal and professional development of people in the workplace under 30. The programme has been a huge success. This year also saw the launch of the Dorset Business Festival, a major series of business events culminating in the return of the prestigious Dorset Business Awards after a 4 year hiatus. The festival was a huge success with over 800 people attending over 4 days. 2024 will see the return of the festival. After 10 years I feel incredibly proud of our achievements and this was recognised this year by being in the top five UK Chambers of the Year. I am proud of the connected, professional, inclusive and approachable community we have developed and will continue to focus on doing the absolute best I can. There is still so much we want to achieve.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years. Ian Girling

AI partnership boosts NHS care and working environments Bournemouth University has teamed up with ImproveWell, a real-time feedback solution for staff to improve health and care, to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to turn NHS frontline workers’ feedback into digestible evidence to support decision-making for the first time. ImproveWell is a digital platform that collects real-time feedback from NHS workers on changes that could improve staff and patient experience. Currently, this data is displayed thematically to tell teams what changes are being suggested and how staff morale is tracking. An Innovate UK grant has enabled Bournemouth University and ImproveWell to enter into a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to develop bespoke AI models for the platform, building on existing data science and business intelligence capability.

This KTP will allow the platform to provide AI-powered data insights, enabling teams to quickly identify the most promising ideas and frequently reported challenges, and analyse characteristics that make ideas successful. Finn Morgan, Business Engagement & Knowledge Exchange Manager at Bournemouth University said: “KTPs are a tried and tested government scheme that has helped ambitious, growth-oriented businesses to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals. “Bournemouth University has worked with businesses across the UK on KTP projects and we are keen to build on that track record. If you want to find out more, then we’d be delighted to speak with you.” www.bournemouth.ac.uk

Julia’s House named UK’s Number One Charity to Work For Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice, has been named the UK’s ‘Best Charity to Work For’ in the prestigious Best Companies Awards 2023. The charity was praised for its ‘compassion, care, and excellence’ and for ‘supporting staff to be the best they can be in an emotionally demanding but immensely rewarding environment.’ Martin Edwards, Chief Executive for Julia’s House, said: “Julia’s House recognises that healthcare staff come under huge pressures, and there is a national shortage of nurses and carers. It is therefore vital to look after our staff to an exceptional standard, and to be one of the best employers in the country. This directly affects the quality of care that the children and their families receive.” “While the Best Companies award is a great acknowledgement of all that we do here to make Julia’s House a world class place to work, we’re not complacent. We will continue to listen to and learn from our staff, adapt and evolve our work environment and share new and innovative ways of growing and supporting everyone.” www.juliashouse.org

Navigating the C mplex World of

Hazardous Goods Packing Jon Felton, works director, John Pipe International

In global trade, the correct packing of hazardous goods is critical. In this article, Jon Felton, Works Director, at John Pipe International, a Dorset-based, leading provider of export packing and freight services, shared his expertise on the transportation of hazardous goods. For potentially dangerous materials, the packing demands meticulous attention to detail and compliance with regulations. Regulatory changes can be frequent, and it’s vitally important for businesses

involved with hazardous goods to remain current with the latest regulations. Lithium-ion batteries in particular, have frequent regulatory changes. As usage of these batteries increases, it’s important to take advice and guidance on the transportation of hazardous goods and substances from a fully trained expert like John Pipe International. Governments worldwide have established comprehensive regulations to oversee the transportation of hazardous goods. Adherence to these is a moral obligation to protect human lives and the environment. Further, individuals taking household items out of the UK must also comply with packing regulations and transport them accordingly. For example, bleach or paint for house renovation, even in small amounts, would need to adhere. One significant factor in accidents involving hazardous materials is human error. Adequate

As global trade expands further, the importance of correct packing practices for hazardous materials is imperative.

training of personnel involved in the packing process is non-negotiable, including both the technical aspects of packing and the emergency response procedures. Selecting the right packaging materials with the correct labelling and documentation is another vital part of the shipping of hazardous goods. Accurate and clear labelling is paramount here. Every package must have labels indicating the nature of its contents and any associated risks. Meticulous documentation, including a Dangerous Goods Note and a Material Safety Data Sheet, must accompany the goods to notify everyone in the supply chain about safe handling procedures. In conclusion, the packing of hazardous goods is a challenge that requires regulatory compliance, technical expertise, and environmental consciousness. As global trade expands further, the importance of correct packing practices for hazardous materials is imperative. It’s not just about protecting products; it’s about safeguarding our world. Embarking on a health-focused New Year’s resolution? New Year motivation for your workforce Using apps to monitor daily activities, such as walking, eating, and water intake, remains a popular method for goal setting. These apps can incentivise us by sending encouragement via rewards and badges and allow us to compete with friends and family. Whether they help you achieve 10,000 steps a day or train for a marathon, they all involve the same thing: motivation. Motivating staff is a recurring topic in HR discussions, with various theories gaining and losing popularity over the years. While individual motivation can fluctuate, a motivated workforce contributes to increased productivity and a more supportive, creative environment. Conversely, a lack of motivation can negatively impact organisational culture, reduce productivity, and raise staff turnover. Understanding employee drivers is crucial for boosting motivation. Managers can often identify what factors drive their team members during appraisals, regular performance reviews or by observing how they react to situations. Setting meaningful and achievable goals that still allow individuals to strive for success can help increase motivation, particularly when introduced in a supportive and encouraging environment. The start of a new year can be an excellent time to review your organisation’s appraisal scheme, reassess objectives, and align them with employee recognition, financial rewards, and incentives. This proactive approach can foster a motivated workforce, contributing to overall organisational success. As the decorations are carefully packed away, and the celebrations begin to fade, the transition from the festive period to the new year marks a shift in focus. It’s a time when we bid farewell to the merriment of the holidays and embrace the possibilities that the coming year holds. The post-festive period often brings a mix of emotions and for some it can be very daunting to enter a new year full of anticipation and uncertainty. Taking care of our mental and physical health during the long, dark winter days is really important, and regular exercise and time spent outdoors can really support this. It’s no wonder that people choose New Year to set personal goals and resolutions that can be centred around self-improvement, positive lifestyle changes and with the coming of 2024, there is no better time to do this! Whilst building a healthier lifestyle is a fantastic objective, it is a lot easier said than done and without proper advice and guidance on steps to achieve your health-related goals, many people often struggle to adapt to this way of life and give up early into the new year. It’s definitely worth seeking expert advice and help in the form of a personal trainer or coach, and research shows that you’re way more likely to achieve your goals with this support. However, thanks to the power of digital, we can all have a helping hand to sustain those health habits, using the power of a health app on our phone. These digital tools can act as sort of personalised wellness companions, offering a variety of features to support your goals. Whether you’re focusing on fitness, nutrition, or mental well-being, health apps offer a wealth of resources. Before you choose the best fit for you, it’s worth doing your research – some are more expensive and more effective than others. Here’s a few for inspiration: My Fitness Pal - An excellent all-rounder, MyFitnessPal offers workout tracking, calorie counting, and a vast food database to help you manage your diet. Fitbod - A standout for strength training, Fitbod creates a workout plan tailored to your equipment, goals, and capabilities. Strava - It’s perfect for runners and cyclists with features for tracking, comparing, and sharing workouts. Balance - Offering guided meditation and relaxation tips, this apps is free for a year for some phone users, so worth looking into. Daily Burn - It offers a wide variety of workout videos, from HIIT to dance, pilates, and yoga. Peloton - While popular for its spin classes, Peloton also offers a range of fitness classes, from yoga to HIIT. Yoga Studio - Ideal for practising yoga at all levels, with classes ranging from beginner to advanced. For local ‘real life’ support, take a look at the Dorset Chamber membership directory and reach out to one of the great businesses locally who can help you achieve your goals. /company/dorset-chamber/
