p4-5 Hello and a warm welcome to our February 2024 edition of Dorset Business Focus. I hope 2024 has got off to a great start for you. This month’s lead story is inclusivity and why this is so important in the workplace. Put simply, inclusivity is about ensuring that everyone feels valued and respected as an individual in the workplace. Inclusivity needs to be embedded culturally within an organisation and is a vital component of strong leadership. Inclusivity empowers employees to contribute to their organisation, share their ideas and help drive innovation and creativity. It also has a positive impact on employee well-being, leading to improved staff productivity and retention. At a time when one of the continuing main challenges for business is staff recruitment, this is also a key consideration when people are looking at what type of business they would like to work for. We welcome your feedback on what businesses are doing around embedding inclusivity in the workplace. As a Chamber, we have had a key focus on inclusivity both within our business and within our membership for many years and this continues to be extremely important to us. It’s been a busy start to the year for the Dorset Chamber team. Our events programme is in full swing, and we are busy making plans for the 2024 Dorset Business Festival in October. We’ve already welcomed many new members to Dorset Chamber this year. We’ve also launched some exciting new content sponsorship opportunities in this magazine, our website, and our e-newsletters – a fantastic way to promote your business. In terms of the economic climate, we all know that growth is predicted to be very slow in the year ahead and it was disappointing to see inflation creep back up in January. Despite this national picture, we continue to see resilience and optimism in Dorset businesses, and we will continue to do our very best for our business community. As always, don’t hesitate to contact us if we can help you in any way.

TEN ways to attract a more diverse client base In an increasingly globalised world, organisations need to adapt to a rapidly evolving marketplace where diversity and inclusion are not only ethical but also smart strategies for remaining sustainable. Attracting a diverse client or customer base can significantly contribute to the growth and success of your organisation. Rachel Atkinson, The People Choreographer

1. Cultivate an Inclusive Company Culture A diverse customer base is more likely to engage with organisations that demonstrate an inclusive company culture. Ensure that your workplace promotes diversity and inclusion, values different perspectives, and

Dorset Chamber spoke to Rachel Atkinson, The People Choreographer, to find out how businesses can support and attract a more diverse customer group. fosters an environment where everyone feels welcome. This will resonate with potential customers who share these values. 2. Diversify Your Team Having a diverse workforce can help you

connect with a broader range of clients or customers. By hiring individuals from various backgrounds, you not only benefit from a wider pool of talents but also create a relatable team for your diverse audience. 3.

Ensure your physical and digital spaces are accessible and inclusive. This includes making your website, store or office meet standards set by the Equality Act, providing translations or language support, and accommodating special needs or preferences. 4

Research and Understand Your Target Audience To attract a diverse customer base, you must first understand their unique needs and preferences. Conduct market research to gain insights into the demographics, psychographics, and cultural nuances of your target audience. This knowledge will help tailor your products, services, and marketing strategies accordingly.

4. Tailor Your Marketing Efforts Your marketing materials and campaigns should reflect the diversity of your potential clients or customers. This includes using imagery, language, and messaging that resonates with various cultural backgrounds and demographics. Personalising your approach can create a stronger connection with different segments of your audience.

Engaging directly with potential customers can also establish trust and credibility.

5. Partner with Diverse Organisations Collaborating with organisations that represent and serve diverse communities can be a powerful way to attract a more diverse customer base. Sponsorships, partnerships, or joint marketing initiatives can help you tap into their networks and build trust among potential customers.

8. Provide Excellent Customer Service Excellent customer service is essential in attracting and retaining a diverse client base. Train your staff to be culturally sensitive, empathetic, and responsive to the needs of all customers. A positive experience can lead to repeat business and referrals.

6. Be Visible in Diverse Communities Participate in events, trade shows, and community activities that are relevant to diverse customer segments. This will help your organisation become more visible and accessible to these communities.

7. Offer Diverse Payment Options Make it easy for diverse customers to do business with you by offering a variety of payment options. This can include alternative payment methods or currency options, which can be especially important when serving international or culturally diverse audiences.

9. Accessibility and Inclusivity Ensure your physical and digital spaces are accessible and inclusive. This includes making your website, store, or office meet standards set by the Equality Act, providing translations or language support, and accommodating special needs or preferences. 10. Continuous Improvement and Feedback Seek feedback from your diverse customer base and use it to drive continuous improvement. Encourage open communication and actively listen to their suggestions and concerns. By making necessary adjustments, you show that you value their opinions and are committed to serving their needs.

Embracing diversity is not only the right thing to do, but it’s also a smart business move that can set you apart from the competition and lead to long-term success.

Using Inclusive Language in the Workplace You may not have considered the importance of using inclusive language in the workplace, but it can really help people to feel welcome. Inclusive language means avoiding biases, slang and expressions that discriminate or exclude based on race, gender, ability or socioeconomic status. Inclusive language acknowledges diversity and helps staff feel respected. An example: the word “manpower”. Are your team all men? If not, then your business isn’t run on “_man_power”. It’s better to choose phrasing that represents all of your staff. Everyone feels valued, because everyone is included. Choosing inclusive language is a simple way to address unconscious bias and not alienate employees, creating an environment where everyone feels empowered to use their voice, and breaking down barriers for anyone whose identity doesn’t fit into certain phrasing. Studies show that women are less likely

to apply for a role unless they are able to tick off every item on the job description, which makes it worth reviewing every time you advertise for a new role. Use inclusive language in any job specifications and adverts too. There are tools on the internet such as gender decoders that can help with this. You wouldn’t actively want to make people feel excluded or upset through language choice. But, sometimes we can do this without realising, especially if the noninclusive language doesn’t directly affect

us, so try to be empathetic and consider others when making word choices. Lots of non-inclusive terms are commonly used or were deemed ‘acceptable’ in days gone by. It can be difficult even to notice what we’ve said. Don’t expect everyone to get it right all the time, but practising speaking more inclusively and encouraging your team to do the same is the best approach. Using inclusive language is a really important but simple way to ensure all colleagues feel welcome and safe at work.

Don’t expect everyone to get it right all the time, but practising speaking more inclusively and encouraging your team to do the same is the best approach.

Rachel said: “By implementing these strategies, you can create an environment where diversity is not only celebrated but also rewarded in the form of organisation growth and success. Embracing diversity is not only the right thing to do, but it’s also a smart business move that can set you apart from the competition and lead to long-term success.” Rachel Atkinson is The People Choreographer®, with a mission to disrupt tradition and create inclusive workplace communities. With a passion for all things equity, diversity and inclusion, Rachel understands the importance in creating inclusive organisations to create sustainable growth and appeal to a broad range of clients. www.peoplechoreographer.co.uk more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / PREMIER PARTNER NEWS

Inclusivity in the Workplace What does inclusivity mean in the context of the workplace? An inclusive workplace provides equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalised. As a result those employees feel part of the organisation and know that their contribution is valued in the same way as their colleagues. This means that differences can coexist beneficially. However, I think a colleague described this well when she said, inclusivity is ‘A place where a person’s identity can be freely expressed without fear of judgement’. There have been many studies carried out and articles written about the importance of being your true self at work and being accepted as you are. When someone feels they have to hide their true self through fear of judgement or exclusion, they are expending a lot of energy just on presenting themselves in a certain way, even before the challenges of the working day begin. Why is it important? Inclusivity is important for many reasons. It enables individuals to have equal access to resources and opportunity and in doing so can often create a more positive working environment, which is likely to be more diverse and may help to attract and retain the best talent to your business. In turn this can impact on and attract a wider client and customer base. It is very likely that any applicant who is considering working for an organisation will undertake research well before their CV

or application form reaches the HR team. They will have spoken to others who know the business and researched any relevant social media and website content to gain an insight into the culture of the organisation. Similarly, clients may be interested when considering who they wish to do business with as part of their adherence and commitment to Environmental Social Governance. How do we improve? Training, policies and practices. Senior leaders need to be on board and should be leading by example, reflecting values, implementing and overseeing practice and ensuring dignity and respect within their teams. This enables more open communication where people will feel that they can put forward suggestions for improvements and initiatives as they arise. Being aware of the impact we have on others and learning from feedback is also important. Managers and supervisors should be experienced in giving and receiving feedback and be open to change where their behaviour leads others to feel excluded. A culture where feedback is given regularly allows for any issues to be addressed quickly before negative behaviour becomes a theme. Training staff and managers in equality, diversity and inclusion, dignity at work and company values can be a key way of setting out the expectations for your workforce.

Policies and procedures can also be helpful in reflecting and providing a framework for achieving and maintaining inclusivity. For example, how are your general policies written, can they be accessed by all your employees, including those working remotely or using supportive software? Are you able to move away from titles such as Chairman of the Board, and consider referring to the position as simply Chair of the Board? It may be that your recruitment is always done on a like-for-like basis, by the same group of people, in which case it may be better to involve others in the process to ensure you get a range of views and perspectives. Regularly reviewing the tone and language used right from the initial drafting of adverts can be a useful exercise. Emma Starmer, Senior Employment Law and HR Advisor, Lester Aldridge

GiveVision trial a huge success at Vitality Stadium President’s Column by Tony Brown As February unfolds Dorset Chamber continues to be the heartbeat of our vibrant business community. The year ahead holds the promise of renewed growth and resilience, and the chamber is committed to being a steadfast partner in navigating the evolving landscape. In the context of the UK’s economic outlook, optimism just about prevails. With a renewed focus on innovation, sustainability and global partnerships businesses across Dorset are poised to contribute significantly to the nation’s economic recovery. Dorset Chamber remains dedicated to providing a platform to ensure our members are well equipped to seize emerging opportunities. Of course, many things can threaten this optimism such as political changes or international events but with an impending general election this year, we hope to receive continued economic good news. February brings a delightful mix of celebrations, with pancake day and Valentine’s Day adding a dash of excitement to the month. Across Dorset our kitchens will come alive with the sizzle of batter and in my case, the cleaning of the ceiling, as batter meets paintwork at high speed! Following closely on the heels of pancake day is Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love. Local businesses contribute to the atmosphere with special menus, events and gifts ensuring that these celebrations are woven into the fabric of the community. So, whether you’re enjoying a freshly flipped pancake or sharing a tender moment with a loved one, February is a month that embraces the sweet and sentimental in equal measure. 8

At this season’s fixture against Burnley, AFC Bournemouth joined forces with GiveVision to bring an innovative assistive technology to Vitality Stadium for supporters with visual impairments. The headsets work with a user’s remaining vision to enhance their experience and provide them with the opportunity to watch a match in real-time alongside their friends and family. In the UK, approximately 1 in every 30 people are visually impaired, which would mean around 400 visually impaired spectators attending matches at Vitality Stadium every match. Four supporters took part in the trial, with two of these being players within the Community Sports Trust. One supporter had previously stopped attending matches due to her sight loss, while the other was a long-standing supporter of the club. All the supporters who took part were delighted with the headsets, which allowed them to experience a matchday without the constraints of their visual impairment. Hannah Powis, AFC Bournemouth’s Head of EDI and Engagement:

“Inclusion is hugely important to AFC Bournemouth, we want anyone who wants to be part of our journey to have the opportunity to do so without barriers. “We are proud to be only the second club in the Premier League to offer the headsets to supporters and look forward to working closely with GiveVision to make this accessible to other supporters. “This trial is a movement by the club to work closely with its Disabled Supporters Association, to actively seek out new technologies to improve access for disabled supporters.” www.afcb.co.uk

Students taking part on The CRUMBS Project

Meet the Winner At the Dorset Business Awards, our independent panel of judges were looking to celebrate businesses which truly embraced inclusivity and diversity to make their workplaces more representative, welcoming and inclusive. We asked the winner of the Inclusivity and Diversity in the Workplace category, The CRUMBS Project, to share their story… The CRUMBS Project is a disability training charity based in Slades Park, Bournemouth. The charity helps to change the lives of adults with disabilities, aged between 18-70, through professionally recognised Hospitality and Catering training. Trainees, each with individual learning needs and styles, follow programmes incorporating a blend of practical training, eLearning, and mentoring from professional trainers. After completing training, over 90% of trainees gain employment and skills for living more independently. The CRUMBS Project achieved Disability Confident Leader status early in 2023 and is recognised as a role model in this area, promoting it internally within their own organisation and externally across the Hospitality sector.

50% of the charity’s staff have a disability including team members with physical and learning disabilities, neurodivergent, recovering from brain injury, or with a progressive condition. Their team includes four former trainees with disabilities who gained paid positions at the end of their training. The charity takes pride in providing a safe, inclusive working environment for trainees, staff, and volunteers. Advocating opportunity for all, they welcome people from diverse backgrounds including neurodivergent and individuals with mental health needs, recently employing a team member accompanied by a support dog. Visitors to The CRUMB Project’s training centre see evidence of the Makaton speech, signs and symbols language programme, which all the charity’s staff have trained in. Bournemouth Airport on track for 1m passengers Bournemouth Airport expects to handle more than one million passengers in 2024 as Ryanair confirms its 19th destination from the airport. To cater for the expected passenger growth, airport owners Regional and City Airports is investing more than £5m in new

facilities, equipment, staff and training. Ryanair has confirmed it will start twice weekly flights to the beach destination of Agadir in Morocco from 1st April this year. This expansion follows the success of Ryanair’s 2023 season which saw it base a second aircraft at the airport

for the summer, increasing the number of flights by 30% to 120 a week. Tour operator TUI has already announced it will add a second aircraft at Bournemouth in 2024 with an extra 60,000 seats available, a 33% increase on its 2023 schedule. TUI has 14 destinations from Bournemouth with increased frequency planned on many routes next year. The growth in destinations and frequency means the airport, which employs more than 250 people, expects to exceed one million passengers in 2024. The last time it hit that milestone was in 2008, 15 years ago. Steve Gill, managing director of Bournemouth Airport, said: “We’ve embarked on a major investment programme to cater for the anticipated growth in passenger numbers. Before the pandemic we saw 800,000 passengers. Having exceeded that this year, we are confident of seeing more than one million in 2024. “That’s a tremendous achievement and reflects the great range of destinations available from Bournemouth Airport and our commitment to providing the best possible experience for passengers.” www.bournemouthairport.com

PKF Francis Clark is officially a Great Place to Work – again! PKF Francis Clark is celebrating being certified as a Great Place to Work for a second year running. The accolade is a direct result of feedback from colleagues in an independent survey by Great Place to Work, the global authority on workplace culture. The in-depth Great Place to Work survey found PKF Francis Clark scored above the benchmark for the UK’s Best Large Workplaces in 26 out of 29 focus areas. Amy Taylor, chief people officer at PKF Francis Clark, said: “The UK’s Best Large Workplaces are an elite group, so to outperform this benchmark in almost all areas is hugely encouraging. “The areas where we saw the biggest improvement reflect some key initiatives, including one-to-one conversations with all colleagues as part of our annual pay review process, investment in enhancing our office environments and our new leadership programmes. These have been driven by our ongoing colleague listening programme, so it’s great to see they’re having a positive impact.” www.pkf-francisclark.co.uk

HEALTH

Waiting for the light

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Managing SAD in the winter months As humans, we are not hibernating animals, but on a cold, dark morning commute who doesn’t want to hide in a cave and sleep for six months? With the long, dark nights of winter lingering, you or your colleagues, may find yourselves grappling with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a condition that can impact your mental well-being and work performance. The reduced exposure to natural light during the winter months can disrupt circadian rhythms and trigger symptoms like low energy, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating. For those navigating a hectic lifestyle, acknowledging and managing SAD – or similar symptoms – can have a huge impact. Managers and employees alike can prioritise strategies to combat the winter blues: • Maximise exposure to natural light during daylight hours. Encourage brief outdoor breaks, positioning workspaces near windows, and incorporating welllit communal areas in the workplace. • Invest in light therapy lamps, mimicking the effects of sunlight, to help regulate circadian rhythms. • Regular physical activity has widespread benefits for mental health, even a brisk stroll at lunchtime can boost the mood. • Check your Vitamin D. Vit D is crucial for bone health, immune function, and significantly mood (many studies indicate links between Vit D deficiency and low mood). The NHS recommends adults need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day. Typically, the body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when outdoors. But between October and early March we do not make enough vitamin D from sunlight, so you’ll need to get it from your diet (lots of oily fish, eggs, beef, mushrooms, fortified foods) or a supplement. If you have any concerns, speak to your GP. Even on the dark days, try and stay positive. Look out for those signs of Spring, book in little activities to look forward to. Soon, the clocks will change (31 March) and our glorious Dorset summer will arrive…

The reduced exposure to natural light during the winter months can disrupt circadian rhythms and trigger symptoms like low energy, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating.

Time to Talk

Millions of working days are lost each year due to mental health conditions. Time to Talk Day falls on 1 February 2024. This is an annual initiative to encourage positive discussions around mental health. Workplaces can get involved and raise awareness of mental health support this month by taking advantage of a wide range of resources, posters and even quizzes all designed to get us talking about what can be a daunting and difficult subject. Raising awareness of the impact of poor mental health and discussing it openly can help encourage people to reach out without fearing that they may be judged for doing so. Perhaps your own workplace could use this opportunity to set up a Mental Health First Aider programme or put together an internal group or committee who can be tasked to improve the support available. However you choose to encourage positive discussions around mental health in your organisation, with 1 in 4 people experiencing poor mental health each year, it could have a big impact on employee wellbeing. It may be that the support that is already in place is not well known throughout the organisation, and by simply raising awareness of employee assistance programmes or counselling services you will help people access the support they need. International Trade Updates

Why is it important to join a Chamber of Commerce? Dorset Chamber’s International Trade department not only helps you grow, expand and do business across the globe but can also offer support to businesses with export requirements including documentation, payments, customs, training and advice. In this article, Linda Middleton-Jones, a Partner at International Trade Matters, outlines the importance of being part of a chamber of commerce for businesses who trade overseas. We are a fan of Chambers of Commerce and choose to take membership with several of them. Do we have favourites – of course we do – they are the Chambers of Commerce that support international traders.

We are delighted with the contacts we work with at Accredited Chambers (you know who you are!) and look forward to continuing those relationships in 2024 – why wouldn’t we? www.internationaltradematters.com

Linda Middleton-Jones, partner, International Trade Matters

So why should you join one? You may not be aware but if you are a member of a Chamber of Commerce you can get a special price on any documents you may need relating to international trade. They also offer great rates on British Chamber of Commerce accredited training – covering such interesting topics as both import and export documentation, inward and outward processing, agents & distributors and Letters of Credit to name just 5 out of the 11 available. But there is more. The Chamber international trade teams are great – they support their members and those who are yet to be members; they provide other events that include webinars and networking opportunities – many free of charge. We work with many Chambers to provide that extra level of support on a deep dive into the vagaries, issues and challenges faced by our intrepid importers and exporters. It is a really good partnership and something Chambers are good at. Additionally, Chambers are interconnected globally with their Overseas Business Networks – offering extra advice and support for overseas expansion. They also lobby government and collect information in their quarterly survey that helps drive and inform international trade.

The Chamber international trade teams are great – they support their members and those who are yet to be members. 38
