DESIGN,
The first is a diversity and inclusivity forum with a view to helping both Dorset Chamber and its members fully embrace the principles and working practices of diversity and equality. Our intention is to meet three times per year and keep abreast of good practice and share this with the business community. We particularly welcome people from minority groups and if you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with me.
As I write, we all continue to experience challenging times with the ongoing supply chain issues, huge recruitment challenges and rising prices. Dorset Chamber does its best to support our members and the wider community and if we can help you in any way, please get in touch.

The other forum is for younger people within the business community, again meeting three times per year. This forum will discuss the issues impacting younger people within the workforce and help inform us on the services we can offer for the next generation of business leaders. Again, if this is of interest, please do get in touch.

Firstly, I’d like to welcome our newest member of the team, Paul Taylor, leading on business development. Paul will be working with us to welcome new businesses to Dorset Chamber both through membership and the other services we offer to the wider business community. This ranges from events and workshops to peer learning programmes and international trade support. Paul has been a friend of Dorset Chamber for many years and is well known in the business community through his roles at Poole Audi, Volvo and BMW. Welcome on board, Paul!
I’ve mentioned before, we are launching a programme, supported by both BCP and Dorset Councils, to help businesses understand and embrace ESG (environmental, social and governance). This will be a series of online events beginning with an introduction to ESG, what this means and why this is so important for businesses. Subsequent sessions will cover key aspects of reducing our carbon footprint in our businesses, why good governance is so critical and CSR within business. All sessions are online, open to all and free to attend. Booking will be necessary and you’ll be able to see all sessions on our website in due course.
I’m really keen on showcasing businesses that have taken real steps to reduce their carbon footprint so, if this is you, please get in touch.

David Bharier, head of Research, British Chambers of Commerce, said: ‘“This quarter’s survey results clearly point to a weakening economic outlook amid unprecedented cost pressures and falling business confidence. Businesses face an unprecedented convergence of cost pressures, with the main drivers coming from raw materials, fuel, utilities, taxes, and labour. The continuing supply chain crisis, exacerbated by conflict in Ukraine and lockdowns in China, has further compounded this. Against this backdrop, it is no surprise that business confidence for the months ahead is waning as we enter a period of heightened economic uncertainty.”

Dorset Chamber will be hosting a Diversity and Inclusivity Forum with a view to helping both the chamber and its members fully embrace the principles and working practices of diversity and inclusivity. If you are a tenant with concerns about the security of your tenancy or condition of the property, it is important to seek legal advice now on your options.

Creating more certainty for tenants
Landlords need to be ready for the changes Not only are no-fault evictions being abolished but the government is also planning to strengthen and extend the fault-based evictions too, in order to provide more protection to tenants.
The government wants to prevent this type of conduct.
The Conservative’s manifesto proposed to abolish ‘no-fault’ evictions in England. The coronavirus pandemic delayed that promise, but in 2022, the UK government said it is full steam ahead.
I have found that diversity brings together people from different backgrounds, showcases a variety of perspectives and leads to innovation and creativity. When we bring people together from all walks of life—different genders, backgrounds, and races—it’s amazing what we can achieve.
At the moment the law enables a landlord to take back possession of their property, which is subject to an Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement, without having to establish any fault on the part of the tenant. The landlord can give the tenant two months’ notice (subject to satisfying certain requirements) to leave the property at the end of the fixed term.

‘No-fault’ evictions to be abolished
Diversity and inclusion are essential today—something I have seen firsthand when working with the team at Southampton City of Culture Trust, and something I am very passionate about.
If the tenant refuses to vacate, the landlord can use the court’s ‘accelerated’ procedure to get possession.
Diversity and inclusion allows businesses and organisations to be more inclusive of different ideas, cultures, and lifestyles, leading to an improved company culture. It also puts businesses in the position to recruit the best employees from a diverse and often untapped candidate pool while increasing customer satisfaction with their products and services.
With years of pandemic restrictions and now a cost of living crisis, many landlords are suffering significant periods of rent arrears caused by tenants struggling to pay; it is no surprise then that these proposed changes are causing uncertainty.

Landlords are also accused of using the no-fault eviction process as a retaliation tactic against tenants who request repairs be undertaken to the property or challenge rent increases.

If you are a landlord, now is the window of opportunity to seek legal advice on those properties you want to gain back possession before the law changes. Now is also the time to review your current tenancy agreements to perhaps consider adding contractual break-clauses.
Tenants can feel insecure that their landlord could evict them with only two months’ notice, potentially leaving a family suddenly homeless in a sparse rental market.
Professional, expert advice can save time and cost

Back in April, the Dorset Chamber set up an online charity auction to raise money to help people fleeing the fighting in wartorn Ukraine. The auction was open to members of the public and all Dorset businesses, whether chamber members or not, with proceeds going to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).

How do you explain Internet safety to a child?
If you use social media and shop online, you’ll have a lot of personal information on the Internet and need to take measures to remain safe online. Website browsers, and additional software all have privacy settings that can be optimised. Make sure to use all privacy settings available.
Enable privacy settings
Be wary of who you meet on the Internet
A firewall is a security system for your network that can be programmed to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. You can easily configure a firewall on your desktop device; most operating systems come firewall ready.
Regardless of device, exercise caution with what you download, as you could be downloading malware that can access your personal details. Security software helps to screen digital downloads.
Ensure your Internet connection is secure Secure your Internet connection to protect account data and passwords. Do this by using different passwords on the computer and the router and keeping software updated.
Keep anti-virus software up-to-date
Use a firewall
Cybercriminals can use software to reveal basic passwords. Set strong passwords and save them to the keychain instead of attempting to remember them. And remember, random passwords are stronger.
Use a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, and using one allows you to browse privately and securely.
Use a password management system

These days, we need Internet security software to protect our computers and devices from online dangers. Unless you have Internet security software, there is nothing to stop cybercriminals from sending phishing scams and malware. When buying Internet security software, consider the price against the features; in general, you get what you pay for.

Be aware of scams
Other types of phishing are less crafty and will simply ask you to enter personal details.
to make sure your anti-virus software is fit-for-purpose and up-to-date.
There are numerous types of cyber threats online that you should be aware of; we’ve outlined our expert tips on how to stay safe online.
Watch what you post
Close unused accounts
Most browsers and operating systems have a password management system. However, having your own platform to generate complex passwords, retrieve them, and store them in an encrypted database is more secure. Always create complex passwords with special characters that will be hard for hackers to guess.
Never divulge too much personal information to someone you met online, and if you take the next step to meet in person, inform your friends and always choose a public place.
Personal information is a digital commodity that increases the risk of cybercrime, but with social media accounts, it’s nearly impossible not to share. Use a strong password and operating system and limit your personal information online.
Open a conversation with your children about Internet security, and ensure they understand the risks. What should I look for when purchasing Internet security software?
The Internet offers us some fantastic possibilities; however, it comes with risks. These risks include fraud, catfishing, cyberbullying, invasion of privacy, identity theft, and dangers to children from offensive images and sexual predators.
Not all web addresses are safe to visit. To protect yourself, ensure your browser is up-to-date and using the latest versions. You should also install security software and ensure your passwords are strong and diverse.
Phishing scams
Posting on social media can influence your reputation in the wider community; it can also put your home at risk of crime and your info at risk of fraud. If you are emotional, don’t post, as this can affect your judgement. Be wary of what you download
A secure website will have a security certificate that locks the connection and protects your info from being accessed by third parties. It will have an “HTTPS” website address.

Why is Internet safety so important?
Set strong passwords
Cybercrime is a continuous game of cat and mouse; once the authorities have discovered a scam, the criminals are already trying to outthink them again. It’s worth getting to know the main types of scams (like phishing), but scams have become more sophisticated, so you need to stay vigilant.
An anti-virus software is one of the best defences against malware and digital viruses. Since malware and viruses are always evolving, you need
Use secure sites for online purchases
Limit personal information
Phishing is a type of scam that encourages users to click an email or text message link. Once hooked, the software can deploy on your computer and collect valuable data (a form of malware).
Unused accounts can be used by hackers to build up a picture of your digital persona using any available information. It’s a good idea to shut down your old, unused accounts and websites.

If you’re interested in working somewhere that is trusting, communicative, offers opportunity for career progression and is a little different, then look no further.
The last six months have seen a definite growth in the number of apprenticeships being offered by employers across Dorset with availability in an increasing range of employment and geographical areas within the county. The trade sectors – in particular engineering – have had a difficult two years but we are seeing evidence of a strong recovery now in terms of live apprenticeship opportunities within these sectors.
• Removing the requirement for thousands of apprentices to have to take Level 2 English and maths tests – although apprentices will still need to upskill and attend English and maths classes
Frettens’ thriving property department continues to grow with the announcement of some new arrivals and a host of promotions for key people.
• Making it easier for people to complete apprenticeships more quickly

Although current government incentives may have a part to play, the uplift is, importantly, due to a building awareness that apprenticeships are a strong and reliable recruitment pathway for both local industry and those starting their working career.
Clare Hallett said: “As residential property partner, I have seen Laura and Jade develop and apply their skill sets within the department first-hand. I am committed to developing all of my team and delight in watching them flourish and grow in confidence.
And it is not only school leavers who are showing more confidence in applying – those aged 25 plus are increasingly looking to the pathway to upskill within the workplace or change career direction.

Frettens believes in investing in people, whether that’s bringing on new, bright and ambitious faces; or giving existing staff the opportunity to shine.
“It’s great to recognise seven members of our team for their remarkable contributions to the firm, especially so soon after our last set of promotions.
So, is it too late to look at taking on a new apprentice or upskilling an employee this summer?
They are still looking to expand, with open positions in a variety of different departments across the firm.

Long covid may amount to a disability. This is not a case determining that everyone with symptoms will be disabled.
Cases will always be judged on their own merits, but the facts set out in this case will prove helpful in future decisions.
Alex added: “The certification process is designed to assess every facet of your IT infrastructure, from the devices you use for daily communications right through to servers and your core IT systems. No part of your IT infrastructure is fully safe and secure unless all of it is, so the certification process is necessarily thorough to ensure the business has full confidence in its systems before sharing them with all other stakeholders.”

Now that Cyber Essentials Certification has been approved, TDSi plans to complete Cyber Essentials Plus Certification later in 2022. This enhanced level certification is designed to meet more stringent criteria along with an in-person technical audit conducted by an independent assessor.

In Burke v Turning Point Scotland, the claimant’s nine-month absence from work was the reason for their dismissal. Mr Burke claimed to be suffering from fatigue as a result of long Covid. After engaging with an occupational health professional and being told that the claimant was ‘unlikely’ to meet the definition of disabled under the Equality Act, the respondent took steps towards dismissal.
www.tdsi.co.uk
Poole-based TDSi has announced that it has achieved Cyber Essentials Certification which demonstrates the company’s dedication to fully securing its operations as well as its products and services. Backed by the UK government through the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), Cyber Essentials helps any size or type of organisation to protect itself and those that rely on it from a range of common and potentially dangerous cyber-attacks.AlexRumsey, sales director at TDSi said: “Certification by Cyber Essentials provides further assurance to our customers and partners that TDSi’s IT infrastructure meets the strictest industry standards. Although this is relevant for every organisation that we work with, it is particularly important for our strategic governmental and public sector customers, where a clear audit trail of cybersecurity is essential. We are proud to share our certification and to add further peace of mind that, as a security manufacturer, our own systems are just as secure as those that we produce and sell.”
The judge had to decide whether or not the claimant’s own evidence was credible as the medical evidence was both broad and, at times, contradictory. Ultimately, the judge was satisfied that the evidence was credible and was partly swayed by the fact that the claimant ended up unemployed after June 2021 and not on benefits.
As well as this, the claimant had been keen and taken steps to try and return to work but was medically unable to do so. There was no benefit to the claimant in exaggerating his symptoms.

Although this was only a preliminary hearing, and the respondent may still be found to have made a fair dismissal, this case does still have some takeaways.

Cyber Essentials Certification delivers quantifiable proof that an organisation is upholding the necessary standards to operate safely in a cyber world, as Alex concluded: “Naturally we already knew our IT infrastructure and practices were up to scratch, but we wanted the extra third-party assurance that Cyber Essentials Certification demonstrates to the rest of the world. We are living in an age where cyber security is just as vital as physical security, so we are delighted to demonstrate that TDSi is completely dependable as a top tier security company which practises what it preaches.”
According to the survey in May, the South West region saw the sharpest reductions in staff availability for permanent and temporary vacancies in the whole of the UK. Despite this, the South West reported one of the lowest increases in weekly wages for staff in the first quarter of 2022 at 0.3 per cent compared to the UK average of 3.3 per cent and 9.4 per cent in the East of England. This may pose a question whether the region is doing enough to attract workers from other areas of the country for their demands. However, this may perhaps be an indicator of the seasonality of the South West businesses which saw sharp increase in wages in the middle half of 2021. Does this mean that further increases will be needed to meet demands for the busy Christmas season?

“We share the same passion for social responsibility and are proud to continue to leverage our relationship to help the communities where, together, we are established and draw our strengths.
Property finance lender MSP Capital is to continue its partnership with AFC Bournemouth for the 2022/23 Premier League season.
“It’s also great for us to have continued support from a successful locally-based business who are passionate about the club, and we look forward to the next step of our journey in the Premier League.”
According to the most recent survey by KPMG and REC, the demand for permanent and temporary staff continues to be strong with further recorded rises in the figures. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit due to an ongoing downturn in staff availability. Low unemployment levels impact permanent and temporary recruitment. The demand for staff is much greater than availability, resulting in ongoing pressure for increases to starting salaries and hourly pay rates.
MSP Capital used its previous partnership with AFC Bournemouth to make an impact in the local community, notably through the Bring Your Boots drive and the Goals Recreated campaign with former Cherries frontman Arnaut Danjuma.

• If you have significant assets then not having a will in place could lead to an unnecessary inheritance tax burden.

The importance of updating your will regularly
• If a person dies without having made a will then the distribution of their estate will be dictated by a certain set of legal rules, known as the intestacy rules. These rules may not reflect how the assets are wished to be distributed upon death. Parliament could also change these rules at any time, without notice.
• If a chosen beneficiary or beneficiaries die, then who will receive their entitlement instead?
3. Key-person protection: This recognises key people in the company and the impact on profits if one of them becomes ill or dies. A key person can be anyone who can be justifiably described as integral to the business.

Making a will is one of the most important yet underutilised estate planning tools that everyone should have in place, even if a person does not consider that they have any possessions or money to give. Below are some of the risks to those who have not made a will:
• Are there vulnerable beneficiaries or beneficiaries to whom it would be best that they do not receive significant assets at this stage in their lives? If so, their ‘entitlement’ could be held in trust for their benefit but with suitable controls as to when they can access their inheritance.
• Is there planning that should be considered during lifetime, rather than waiting until death, when it is too late?
• There are shared assets with persons who are not married or have not entered into a registered civil partnership www.trethowans.com
Any person can advise on the making of a will, but mistakes can prove costly, delay the administration of an estate and cause rifts between loved ones. Ideally, therefore, a solicitor or other suitably qualified professional should always be instructed.
Which? magazine estimates that as many as 60 per cent of adults in the UK do not have a valid will in place. Research from Solicitors for the Elderly highlights that 47 per cent of people haven’t updated their will in over five years. This means that nearly half of wills in the UK are out of date and over half of the population do not have a will at all.
DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news 37
Instructing a suitably qualified professional to provide advice also gives the opportunity to consider other important areas:
• There are vulnerable beneficiaries
It’s easy to shrug off the need for protection by thinking you’re unlikely to suffer from adverse events – or believing that if you do, your personal savings or cash in the company will cover it. This is a dangerous and costly attitude so it’s important to take action.
• There is the potential for someone to challenge the will
As local financial expert Peter Harding explains, most people will insure their car, their phone, their holiday and their house, yet surprisingly few business owners take out the necessary protections to guard against the worstHavinghappening.theright insurance policies in place can save you and your family enormous amounts of stress – and money – if things don’t work out as planned for your company. Here’s five key protections to consider:
5. Group schemes: By introducing employee benefits such as income protection, critical illness cover and private medical insurance, you support the financial wellbeing of employees as well as the business itself.
2. Business loan protection: Most businesses have some form of debt, especially in the wake of the challenges posed by Covid-19, so it makes sense to put a policy in place that helps meet any outstanding financial commitments should you become critically ill or die.
Why protection insurance makes sound business sense
1. Shareholder protection: Also known as business succession planning protection, this ensures other owners of the business (the shareholders) can keep control of the company if one of them dies or is seriously ill.

According to the HSE a legally binding maximum temperature cannot be set because of the conditions present in certain settings, such as factories and foundries, where it is possible to work safely provided appropriate controls are present.
“How hot is too hot? That is the question as people begin to ask at what temperature it is too warm to work.
“Of course, there are nuances. For example, some employees will have higher heat thresholds or may have underlying health conditions while some roles may be affected more than others.
City Cruises announced it has been recognised by Tripadvisor as a 2022 Travelers’ Choice award winner for being in the Top 10% of attractions worldwide. The award celebrates businesses that have received great traveler reviews from travellers around the globe on Tripadvisor over the last 12 months. As challenging as the past year was, City Cruises stood out by consistently delivering positive experiences to our guests.
City Cruises in Poole operate the largest fleet of Sightseeing Cruises from Poole Harbour including a Harbour & Island Cruise, Swanage Sightseeing Cruise, Jurassic Coast Cruise and many more.
“Ultimately, much comes down to common sense and employers following health and safety at work law but also listening to staff when they raise concerns and taking any reasonable steps.”
Employers are required to keep the ‘temperature at a comfortable level’ and provide ‘clean and fresh air’.

Kate said: “Responsible employers will understand their duty of care and take measures to mitigate high temperatures both for the benefit of their people and business continuity.
Employees are urged to talk to their managers if the workplace temperature is uncomfortable, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

“However, it is a myth that such a figure exists and ultimately it is up to the employer to decide whether the workplace temperature is suitable for workers.”
Regional law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors explained that it is a popular myth that work can stop once the mercury hits a certain number – although temperatures must be at a ‘reasonable’ level.
stated temperature threshold.
“Employers will also need to check on staff working from home and may need to provide fans, blinds or take other measures to support them.
The explanation of UK laws and employee rights has been sparked as the recent British heatwave sizzled in temperatures which soared above parts of the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

People who connect with nature, rather than having contact with it, have a greater sense of fulfilment. The research found that it was nearly four times greater than the increase associated with higher socio-economic status.
Actions for a new relationship with nature The research shows that when people have higher engagement with green spaces, it fosters greater wellbeing. However, in order to build this relationship, policies are needed that enable people to make this connection. To have the greatest impact, it should not be a part-time role in wellbeing, with occasional access and visits to nature, but should build a new relationship by creating an environment that fosters pathways to nature connectedness.
• Foster a culture of connecting with nature from arts policy that celebrates nature, to nature connectedness being recommended by medical practitioners as a standard metric for one’s wellbeing
• Have it fostered in school from early years onwards, so it becomes part of daily life and a prelude to building a lifelong relationship with nature. Address the teenage dip by bringing nature into secondary schools and ensure that as they enter adulthood they understand the value of nature for in one’s wellbeing
Regularly exercising in nature, be it walking, running or cycling, can bring greater benefits than exercising elsewhere.
Once you have developed a routine, you can power up your experience by connecting with others whilst out walking in nature. It is very rewarding to take part in a community that fosters nature.
Research Group. The research has found that a closer connection with nature can boost the wellbeing of people. This challenges current models of wellbeing and has important implications for future policy. Why connection with nature matters
Nature connectedness refers to the way we relate to and experience nature. A strong connection with nature means feeling a close relationship or an emotional attachment to our natural surroundings.
Simply noticing ‘the good things in nature’ brings sustained benefits to mental wellbeing, with clinically significant improvements for people with common mental health problems.
After a summer break, the walks will resume at Upton Country Park on 9 September, followed by 7 October at Hengistbury Head.

• Design urban spaces around the pathways to nature connectedness, to prompt people to notice, engage and care for nature
Why nature connection is vital to our mental health and wellbeing
Xanthe Grace, Dorset Chamber’s Health and Wellbeing coordinator has been organising ‘Connecting in Nature’ walks since the beginning of the year. They are proving to be very popular, as feedback suggests that people enjoy them as an opportunity to network, as well as start the day in a positive manner. Another benefit of attending is it provides an opportunity to chat to one of the chamber’s GU6 Champions who are all Mental Health First Aid trained. There is at least one champion in attendance at every walk.
There are two key components to connecting: quality and quantity. Firstly, try to get into nature regularly, daily if at all possible, for the best results. Secondly, once you are in nature, ensure you fully take in your surroundings. Be aware of the world around you and savour the moment. Listen to birdsong, smell wildflowers or watch the breeze blowing through the trees. Whilst doing this notice your emotions, and this will help you develop a closer relationship with nature.
Barriers
Unfortunately, barriers preventing people from regularly connecting with nature still exist, however there are ways that governments and policy makers can ensure that it is made easier.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / HEALTH & WELLBEING

Wider research across 18 countries shows that, in the UK, we visit nature much less than people in other countries.
Rediscover your childhood wonder for nature, be curious and open-minded, learn that people are part of the wider natural world and nature matters for human health.
Conclusion
• High quality urban parks, designed with accessibility in mind, can enable more people to enjoy and connect with nature, as well as planting flowers and trees along our streets and creating green corridors

Ongoing research into the benefits of connecting with nature adds weight to ensuring it becomes part of a daily routine. The National Trust and the Wildlife Trust have teamed up with the Mental Health Foundation to create the Nature Connectedness

• Ensure that recovery networks use it as one of the tools to aid long-term recovery
• People living with a disability or health condition often face particular barriers to access, due to a lack of accessible routes. Therefore it is important to ensure that agencies have contact with those struggling and offer access to nature as a matter of course
The key message is to stress why it is so vital to focus on how people can tune in and connect with everyday nature close to home through simple activities. Making this as easy as possible for the vast majority of the population means that many have this simple, valuable tool at their disposal and the benefits to everyone’s mental health and overall physical wellbeing are enormous.

The Toyota Aygo has had a makeover. The fan-favourite Aygo heads in a new direction with a brand-new SUV-inspired exterior design and a bunch of new tech – say hello to the Aygo X (X pronounced ‘cross’). Now the question is: has it got the X-factor?

Build-wise, it’s a bit longer than the Aygo, but still compact and a nice size for city driving. There’s definitely a sense of fun in the design, as seen in the twotone paint finish and emphasised wheel arch trims. This must be the ‘daring and spice’ Toyota designers wanted to bring to Europe’s compact car market.
• The need for motivated and engaged staff to ensure retention by providing them with relevant training for their role as well as supporting their career development
• The need for knowledgeable leaders to continue to drive change and continuously improve, acquiring new skills to manage the ‘new business as usual’
Maintaining the same level of learning across your organisation can be complex, especially when dealing with numerous training providers. Businesses need to ensure that all personnel

X marks the spot if you’re searching for a compact and agile car. Prices start from £15,405, so it’s pretty affordable, but that may be due to the lack of hybrid engine. In its place, however, is a 1.0-litre

Within the Aygo X contemporary design, you’ll find a whole host of nice tech available as you move up the trim levels – including a touchscreen infotainment system, wireless phone charger, LED headlights, smart entry and start, intelligent clearance sonars with auto brake, and heated front seats.

Hendy Group reviews new ToyotaSUV-inspiredAygoX
As part of the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, the SGS Academy UK has trained thousands of people over the last three decades, enhancing people and businesses, improving personal competence and skills.
And if you’re keen to get your hands on it, the new Toyota Aygo X is currently available at Hendy to test drive.
Additionally, the recent pandemic highlighted the importance of providing digitised training to support remote working, however there are other reasons training is important:
The modern design is certainly appealing, and the variety of advanced tech makes it a very valid contender in its category. Definitely add this one to your shortlist if you’re in the market for a new nippy city car. www.hendy.co.uk
