At time of going to press, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) released their annual update of health and safety statistics on work-related injury, ill health, enforcement, and costs in Great Britain. The HSE stats will highlight some key figures. Sadly, in my experience this will mean… • Millions of working people suffering from a work-related illness • Hundreds of thousands of working people sustaining an injury at work according to the Labour Force

Survey • Tens of millions working days lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury • Tens of billions of pounds in cost of injuries and ill health from current working conditions (2018/19) We know that protecting the worker with personal protective equipment (PPE) is the least effective element of the Hierarchy of Controls. PPE is vital in many situations, but it should only be the last line of defence.

To fulfil the Tower mission to ‘Make The Workplace A Better Place’, we work in partnership with customers to change the way people work, such as administrative controls, which are a much more important and effective stage of the hierarchy.

When you work with Tower, PPE can also mean ‘Premium Partnership Experience’. Beyond the supply of PPE, Tower ensures that the wearer also knows how to use, care, and maintain their PPE. We’re able to support our customers to ensure the right combinations of PPE are used, and we have a system to help monitor this.

Ineffective PPE might look the part, but it wouldn’t work as the last line of defence, potentially resulting in irreversible harm. Remember, just because it fits, doesn’t mean the wearer is protected. Contact me to find out more. Church House backs unique cross-Atlantic voyage

Investment specialists, Church House Investment Management has announced their sponsorship of The Friendship. The four Friend brothers, made up of two sets of twins, will take on The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge this December.

The first set of four brothers to row any ocean, and the first sets of two twins to row any ocean, they will be travelling a gruelling 3,000 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the West Indies. The rowers can expect to experience a wide variety of challenges from waves up to 20ft high, temperatures up to 40°C, sleep deprivation, severe dehydration, and the small matter of shark-infested waters.

Known as the world’s toughest row, the Devon-based team are in it for more than just the challenge. They are raising money for three charities, each personal to skipper Jack and his brothers, Hamish, Arthur and Euan. The charities include Friends of Kiwoko Hospital in Uganda which provides vital healthcare services to poor and vulnerable people in the Greater Luwero Triangle area; Drive Forward, which helps young adults leaving foster or residential care to achieve their full potential; and Chat, which supports people experiencing housing difficulties in mid-Devon.

Church House has set up a dedicated page on its website to share details of the challenge and hopes to feature updates from the rowers as they make their way across the vast Atlantic ocean.

Jeremy Wharton, CEO of Church House, said: “When I first heard of this challenge, I was in complete awe of the courage and commitment required to take it on. Leading a business with roots in the South West, I immediately wanted to be involved. The fact that a group of four brothers will take on this long-distance row makes it even more exciting.”
