KeithMotorsiscelebrating70successful yearsinDorset,Hampshireandthe surroundingareasandcanlayclaimtobeing theoldestfamily-ownedandfamily-rungarage inDorset.

ItwouldneverhaveoccurredtoCharlesKeith in1951,whenhefoundedthecompanyin Christchurch,thathiscompanywouldhaveto endureaglobalpandemic.But,likethe rest oftheworld,thatisexactlywhatKeithMotors hadtotacklein2020.

Usinggreatforesight,thecompanyhasbeen offeringclickandcollectorfreelocaldelivery onallcarpurchasesduringthepandemic.It alsoenrolled acollectionanddeliveryservice forMOTsandvehicleservicingenabling customerstomaintaintheircar’sperformance withouttheworryofhavingtovisitthegarage.

Lifewasverydifferentinthe1950sandsince thatfirsthighstreetgarage,KeithMotorshas keptpacewithchangesandinnovationswhilst expandingacrossDorsetandintoHampshire. TheforefrontandfaceoftheKeithMotorswe knowtodayissituatedin LyndhurstRoad, Christchurch.

Bythe1980s,theFordfranchisewas acquired,andKeithMotorsFordhas been expandingthebrandeversince.

ARingwoodbranchwasopenedin2009, whichhassincebecome ausedcommercial centreofferingusedvan,truckandpick-up salesaswellasaftersalesandservicingfor lightcommercialsandolder retailvehicles.

In2014theMGfranchisewasacquiredand theKeithMotorsSelectshowroomwas created.

Athirddealershipin Verwoodwaspurchased in2016.

Goat meatmakesup60%ofall redmeat eatenworldwidebut we eatfarlesshere at homethanin Europewhereitisseen as adelicacy. Butnow, itisbecoming increasinglypopularinBritish kitchens.

Believeitornot,weBritsarenot very adventurouswhenit comes to meat. We eattwo million tonnesofchicken ayear andlove ourlamb,beefandporkbutcurs whicharecommonplaceonthe continent (venison, rabbitormutton) rarelymakeit into our kitchens.

Goat isanotherofthese.Only really found in afewbutchers,goatisfast growingin popularityandisincreasinglyappearing on restaurantmenusaroundthe country. Anumberof food commentatorshave recentlynameditoneofthehottest food trends.

So whyisthemeatprovingsopopular?

“Goatisgreat,”sayschef Fergus Henderson, founderofSpitalfields restaurantStJonn’s.“It braises fantastically,grillslike ajoy and roasts splendidly.Peoplearealwayslooking for somethingnewbuthereitsascendency makessense -itisdelicious,and roastleg ofgoatparticularlyso.Itispuzzlingwhyit is overlooked.”

Thereisethicalappeal to usinggoats,too. Around30,000malegoats,orbillies,are slaughteredinBritaineveryyearas abyproductofthelargegoatcheeseandmilk industry(onlythe females,ofcourse,are required). Goat is extremelypopularinthe restofthe worldaccounting foraround 10per cent ofmeateatenglobally -but therehasneverbeen astrongtradition ofeatingitinthis country. Britishcuisine isfullofimportedfoods,frompasta to hamburgers,buttheone food we’ve never reallytaken to isgoatmeat. Perhaps peoplestillsee apictureofanoldgoat attached by arope to apost.Theydon’t thinkof ahigh-quality, well-rearedanimal. ThefactthatBritain wasbuiltonthe sheep wooltrademaycouldalsoplaya part:Britain’s landscapeismoresuited to sheepthangoatswhoareseenas mountainanimals.

But,inourview,wemay have been missingout.Notonlyisgoatmeattruly delicious,itstasteiscomparable to lamb and very healthytoo.Itisreallylean, very lowinfat andhighinproteinandiniron.

GOAT MEATRECIPE

Withgoatmeatbecomingincreasinglypopularwithitsdeep richflavour we’vebeen experimentingwithsomedishesandthisgoatcurry isgoing to be aregular featureat ourdinnertable.

Ingredients

1kgdicedgoatmeat

400gchopped tomatoes(tinned)

400g kidneybeans(tinned)

1largeonion(chopped)

1wholeheadofgarlic

2chillies(3if youlike yourcurry very,very hot)

3tbsofcurry powder

Thumbsizepieceofginger

100mlof vegetableoil

250mlbeefstock

bunch coriander

pinchofsalt

Method

In afoodprocessorwhizzuptheonion, garlicand ginger to apaste.Addtheoil to alargeheatedcasseroledish,oncehot addtheonion,garlic gingerpasteand cookuntilsoft(about 5mins),nowadd thechoppedchillies,thecurry powder, andthesalt.Cook foranother 3minutes (carefulnot to burn)

Nowaddthegoatintothecasseroledish, andbrownthemeat. Addthestockand chopped tomatoes,andbringthedish to aboil cooking at highheatfor 8minutes, then reducetoalow simmer,coverthe panand cook for2hours.After 2hours remove thelidand cook forafurther20 minutes,thenaddthe kidneybeansand cook for5moreminutes.Sprinkleon some coriander –now ready to serve with somesteamed rice.

Theownermanagedthebusinessinan antiquatedwayandwas aman inhismidfifties,tall,thin,withhishairpartedinthe middle.Itwasn’tlongbeforeIrealisedhe wassomeonewholackedcommunication skillsand regardedhiscustomersasan interruptiontothetelevisionprogrammes heconstantlywatchedinhisoffice.

Onmyfirstday,dressedinmyshiny mohairsuitwithflaredtrousersandkipper tie, Iedged my wayintothecramped officeasthebossheldontothedogsthat lookedintentonrippingoffmyhead. Iwas tolearntoolate,tomydismay,thatbeing tooclosetothesebeastsandwearing decentclothingwasunwise.Globulesof dribble,salivagrowingintothickerhanging shapes,inevitablyfound awayontoto you.

Irememberbeingintroducedto colleagues,oneofwhom Ilaterwent ontocallthe‘Fisherman’.HeaskedifI likedfishingandonhearingmynegative replysoonlostinterest.TheonlytimeI borrowedhislong,plasticruler,Iobserved thatthefirsttwoincheshadbeensnapped offtheendfromhimusingitas afly swatter -theyellowyblack remnantsofa squashedfly remained. Ivowedtobringin myownrulernexttime.

Therewerenocalculatorsonly areadyreckonerandslideruleontheowner’s desk.Thisofficeonlyusedhandwritten recordsandtwotelephonesthatshared oneline. Ihadtowaitfor acolleague tofinishtheircallbeforemakingmine.I becamepartoftheirstrangeworldthat involvedlittleconversationandlotsof sportonthedustyoldRadioRentalsTV.

LunchwasincludedinthedealandBeryl, alarge womaninhersixties,turnedup everydayattwelveo’clocktobasharound inthekitchen.Inalltheheatoftheglorious summerweather,shealwaysworeher blue anorak.Therewouldbe ahissingsound and Ifearedshe’dnotlitthegasproperly. Hertakeonhygienewasinterestingtoo. Soupbowlswithfoodrunsdownthesides dissolvedanyhungerpangs Imayhave had.Shemusthavebeentheonlyperson intheworldcapableofscorching aboiled egg.Ononeoccasionmycolleagueswere sittingatthecrampedkitchentablestaring atthreebread rolls.Theyalltookoneand Isat therelookingattheemptyplate.The fishermansaid,‘Where’sMark’sone?’

Berylsighed,‘Imusthavethrownitinthe bin.’

Icringedasherfatarmenteredthe‘bin of athousandsins’to retrievetheplastic wrapper.Intriumphshepointedtomy roll.

ThedaythatBerylstarted asmallfirein thekitchen remainsetchedinmymind.As shepreparedlunch,sheinadvertentlyleft theteatowelonthetoasterwhichstarted

tosmoulder.Thebosswasfuriousand Berylwasaskedtoleave.Asshealready hadonherblueanorak,shewassoon gone.

Thereweretimeswhenthebosssulked, mainlywhen Isoldtheentiretyofanitem’s stock.He’dsay,‘Whatif acustomer comesontomorrowwanting apacketof thebluepaperandwehavenothingtosell them?’

When Iarrivedhomethateveningmy wifeasked,‘Didyouhave agoodday?’

‘Mmm,no.I’vebeenintrouble.’

‘Why,whathaveyoudone?’

‘Seemslike Isoldtoomuch.’

Istayedthreeyearswiththissmall setupbutanopportunityarosetowork foranotherlargerpapergroupthathad smartofficesandsalescommissionfor thestaff. Iwassuitablyimpressedwiththe computersforprocessingordersandstock control.However,overtime, Idiscovered thattheneworganisation Iworkedforwas toolargeandwewereforeverlostin asea oftakeoversandconstantchanges.

But Ineverlostsightofmy rootsand thoseearlydayswithmyoldcompany. Itwasmadnessandfunall rolledintoa ball.Gonewerethedayswhenthetoast wasburning(literally)orthetimetheboss encouragedmetohelphim‘lickandstick’ his‘GreenShieldStamps’intotheirbooks. Onthedaytheboss’sfather,agentleman inhislateeighties,wasgiventhejobof stickingthestampsonthemailpriorto posting,hewentthroughfortypoundsof stamps(alotinthosedays)applyingthem alloverthesurfacesoftheenvelopes, evencoveringtheaddresses. We certainly hadsomecolourfulmailthatday.

Backinthoseworkingdaystherewas littleurgency;lifewascalmerandthe onlyfirefightingwasdealingwithBeryl’s kitchenmishaps.However,what ashock Ireceivedonenteringthe real world ofwork.Oh,well,atleast Ihavesome amusingmemories.

WARWICK’S FAMILY HISTORY

Icannotsaythatfamilyhistorybeyondmy grandfathershasparticularlyinterested me.However,alloffortyyearsago Iwas rummagingthrough aboxofoldsheet musicinanantiquarianbookshopinAshley Rd,Boscombe,longsincecloseddown.

To mysurprise Ifoundthemanuscriptofa violinsonatabyFriedrichWilheimRUST republishedbyPetersin1926,butlongsince outofprint.Itmademecurious,so Itrolled throughvariousdictionariesofmusicians andfoundhimlistedas aCourtComposer totheDukeofSaxony.Iplayedthroughthe wholepiece,anditwascertainlywritten inthatperiod.Frankly,itwaspleasantbut distinctlyunmemorable.Hediedin1796.

Mygrandfatherondad’ssidewasbornin thelatterpartofthenineteenthcentury. MyfatherwasborninBournemouthinthe 1920s.Legendhasitthat abranchofthe familyemigratedtoEnglandshortlyafter theFrancoPrussian Warin1870.The rest remainedinGermany.One memberwas somewhatbizarrelynamedOTTOVON GROSSBURGERwhohadmarriedHeidi,

oneoftheRustdaughters.Hislifewas asbizarreashisname.Helefthiswife andfamilyandbecame amonkin asilent order.Already aqualifiedchemist,the monasteryusedhistalentstogoodeffect ashebecameanexpertindistillingbrandy. However,abatchhewasmakingto anew secretformulaexplodedinthecellarcausing extensivedamage.Thiswasin1939and unfortunatelytheS.S.heardaboutthisand forciblyconscriptedhimintotheArmy.While servingontheRussianFrontin1942the Germanswererunningdesperatelyshortof ammunition.Theyhadplentyofshellcases butwerefastrunningoutofexplosives forhandgrenades.Ottosettowork.

Unfortunately,notlongafterthisenterprise began,therewas amassiveexplosionatthe garrisonwhereOttowasstationed,andOT ashewasfondlyknownwasnomore.

Thereisaninterestingpostscripttothis story.In1969the monasterytowhomOtto hadbeenattachedwasindesperateneed ofmoneyfor roof repairsandindiggingup thedecayingtimbersinhisformerattic, discoveredthreecasesofthemuchpriced vintagebrandyof1938.Itwentunderthe hammeratanauctioninDusseldorfin1970 andwasspottedbyaneagleeyedMI6agent whopaidtheequivalentof£5Kforallthree cases.Inalltheephemerathatwassoldwith itwas atinylittlepocketbookwhichseemed tohaveverylittlevalue.Itturnedouttobe Otto’ssecretformulaswhichMI6hadno troubledeciphering.Knowingtheworldof spyingas Ido,itwouldbenosurpriseifthey werenottoinjectthisprizedvintagewith anundetectablepoisonforuseinthefield. Afterallwhocan resist a1938brandy.

Itwouldnotbetoofancifultospeculatethat Otto,weariedbythedailyscourging’sinthe monasterywasplanningtoescapewiththis cacheofbrandyas anicelittlenesteggfor hisfuture.Sadly,fameandfortuneofthe rightsortcametoolateforOtto.

TheD-DayStoryhasanexcitingnew addition,tobetterputvisitorsintheshoes ofthosewhotookpartintheNormandy Landings.LCT7074isthelastsurviving LandingCraft Tank thattookpartinthe D-DayLandingsandislargeenoughto havecarriedupto10tanksandtheircrew membersat atime.

ThevesselarrivedoffGoldBeachin NormandylateonD-Day,andputitstanks ashorethefollowingmorning.Itthenspent monthscarryingmoretanks,menand suppliesacrosstheChanneltohelpliberate Europe.

LCT7074’spostwar-careerwascolourful tosaytheleast.Itspenttimeas anightclub, beforesinkinginBirkenheadDock.Then, theNationalMuseumoftheRoyalNavy steppedinto rescuethelandingcraftwith fundingfromtheNationalHeritageMemorial Fundforits rescueandtheNationalLottery HeritageFundforits restoration.This restorationworkwasn’ttheonly challenge, asLCT7074alsohadtomakeitswayby seatoSouthsea,totakeitsplaceoutside TheD-DayStory.

TheD-DayStoryexperiencetakesplace infourparts -startingwith avisitonboard LCT7074,whichisnowhometothe museum’sSherman GrizzlyandChurchill Crocodiletanks.

Visitorscanlearnaboutthelandingcraft’s historyandthetanksitcarried,thanksto interactivetouch-screens,videoandsound. Ontheupperdeckbetakenbackintime, movingthroughthewheelhouse,officers’ quartersandgalley,thenit’suptothe bridgeandgundeck forstunningviews.

ThisAugust(25th)marksthe80th anniversaryofwhenthisHawkerHurricane L1592leftRAFChristchurch,forNo15 MaintenanceUnitatRAF Wroughton, aftertenmonthsofactiveservicewiththe SpecialDutyFlight(SDF),inorderforittobe relegatedtoadvancedpilottraining.

Whatmakesthisaircraftspecialisthatit nowhangsfromtheceilingintheFlight GalleryattheScienceMuseum,South Kensington.Itistheworld’soldestHawker Hurricane,the46thbuiltinthefirstbatch fromHawkersatBrooklands,builtwith fabriccoveredwingsratherthanmetal.

ThephotoofL1592,takenratherunusually fromabove,showstheaircraftflownbyFL/ LtDouglasRaymentoftheSDFinOctober 1940.SadlyFL/LtRaymentwaskilledon 17thJuly1941withtheSDF.

Thisaircrafthadpreviouslybeeninaction againsttheLuftwaffeoverDunkirkandwas damagedon1stJune1940andagainduring theBattleofBritainwhenitcrashlanded

on18thAugust1940beforeundergoing another rebuildbeforetheSDFreceivedit. Nevertheless,itstillhadthestarboardwing fromanotherHurricane,whichisevidentin thecamouflagepaintscheme.

TheSDFusedL1592toescortanddefend radartrialsaircraftbut,italsocarriedout localareadefence.Onenotableinterception withtheSDFduringtheBattleofBritainwas on15thOctober1940whenL1592tookoff aftertheairraidsirenwentoffandthelone L1592founditclosingon aformationof24 MesserschmittBf109sthatthepilot,P/O CliffordWrighthadmistakenforSpitfires! Hedivedawayjustintime.

AftertheBattleofBritainofficiallyended,the Luftwaffestillmountedraidsontheareaand L1592wasstillinactionon10thNovember 1940whenFL/LtDouglasRayment attacked aDornierDo215in aformation oftwentyaircraft,perhapsthelastofmany scrapesithadwiththeenemy.Therefore,it isquiteamazingthatitstillexistsforall tosee!
