VIEWPOINT Volume 42 • Issue 10 • August 2018 MAGS4DORSET Dear Readers After a fabulous month-and-a-half at mags4dorset, I had a week’s holiday. Originally, I had planned to go to Guernsey but plans fell through so I had a restful few days in Dorset with my family before going to York for my graduation.

Graduation was so much fun and it felt amazing to put on a cap and gown after three years of hard-work. There had been lots of laughter but also more tears than I can count so as I walked across the stage to collect my degree from the University of York, I felt a great sense of achievement. I did manage to get my sleeve stuck on the banister as I was descending the steps… Something had to go slightly wrong!

The day before graduation, we went to the York Races, which was also a great, if very soggy experience. We lost all our bets and bear in mind that my Dad and boyfriend placed bets on 5 out of the 6 horses in one race – still nothing!

Tom Jones, who was supposed to be performing on the main stage, didn’t show up because of the thunder and lightning and we ate our food on drenched benches in the rain but it was so much fun because of all this. I had turned up in a smart dress and heels and by the end of the night I was wearing a Portsmouth FC waterproof over it, pink flip flops and was shielding myself with an umbrella. It was an amazing evening.

LAW SPOT Why is a Lasting Power of Attorney so important? Surely my spouse and children can look after me if I lose capacity?

When discussing Lasting Powers of Attorney with clients, I am often asked why these are necessary.

Many people believe that should they lose capacity later on in life, their next of kin can automatically take over the management of their affairs without any documentation in place.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Although your spouse has some legal rights over property you own jointly together, they can be restricted with what they can do with that property. For example, if you have a home together which is held in joint names, it would require both signatures in order that the property could be sold. If one party has lost capacity and is unable to consent to this then considerable delays could be caused with the transaction. Any bank accounts etc that you may have in your sole name, they have no authority to deal with.

Motorcyclist named The motorcyclist who died following a collision on the A35 at Hinton in the New Forest on 3 July has been named. He was Stefan Konstanty, 64, of Grand Avenue, Bournemouth.

The incident involved a Honda Jazz and Mr Konstanty’s motorbike.

Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing.

CATASTROPHIC FIRE DESTROYS FERNDOWN COMMON More details have emerged about the catastrophic fire on Ferndown Common that appeared to start following two loud thunderclaps at around 6pm on Thursday 26 July.

However, firefighters had attended several small fires on the edge of the common in the days leading up to the big fire.

And two weeks before, mags4dorset had reported on a bin fire at King George V Playing Field just a short distance from the common.

Ferndown town councillor, Mike Parkes, who is a retained firefighter said, “The fire has caused complete devastation of 80 hectares. It’s a nature reserve and recognised as

Ferndown’s town green.

The fire had an impact on the town, creating disruption. However, there was a really good community spirit with businesses providing water and food to the fire crews.”

He said the fire wasn’t as big as the one in 1976, but added that it was possibly the biggest in the last 10 years.

When it broke out, a number of engines were at a fire on Canford Heath. A Land Rover from Ferndown and two fire engines from Wimborne were the first on the scene. Eventually, over 100 firefighters attended.

Crews maintained a presence on the common until the morning of

29 July and additional resources were called in on the Saturday as the fire flared up again over approximately eight hectares.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service issued a statement: “While the fire is now out, we would urge people to continue taking care in that area, especially with more hot, dry weather forecast.

In particular, not to have camp fires or barbecues on the common, and to not dispose of lit cigarettes.”

Award with a special meaning for its winner

This year’s winner of the Charlotte Read Award for Endeavour, which is presented by Ferndown Jitsu Club in honour of Charlotte, was her brother Liam Read.

The inaugural presentation of the Charlotte Read Award was made in June 2008. Charlotte had died four months earlier, aged 18, following a fiveyear battle with cancer. She had been a member of the club since its first session in February 2000 and remained a staunch supporter throughout her illness. Her contribution went far beyond her activities as a Jitsuka and competitor.

The loss of a leg to the disease did not stop her from participating in club activities. She even took part in an activity weekend at Avon Tyrell, where she climbed a 50ft tree. The instructor was amazed when she was told that Charlotte only had one leg, The award is all about willpower, having a go at new things and getting on with life and over its hurdles.

Previous winners have all been worthy candidates.

The 2018 award was presented to her brother at the Heatherlands Centre in Ferndown by community hero and former chairman of Ferndown Ju-Jitsu Club Sensei Hatamoto John Hanrahan.

Family Friendly Fun at Avonway A new group, Family Friendly Fun (FFF), has been set up by volunteers to offer free monthly play sessions in Fordingbridge.

Originally gifted space at Avonway for the first few meetings, the group has now been awarded a £1,000 grant by Hampshire County Council, under the Waste Prevention Community Grant Fund. This will enable them to focus on raising awareness of green issues with the families who come to the play sessions.

The sessions are being organised by Clare Cox and Nicky Jenkins with input from Fordingbridge Toy Library and will run on the second Saturday of each month from 10am–midday in the Avonway Annexe. The sessions are aimed at families with pre-school children.

Future dates are: 8 September, 13 October, 10 November and 8 December at Avonway Community Centre in Fordingbridge.

Ringwood and Fordingbridge Club for the Blind’s annual lunch in July was extra special as the club was celebrating its foundation in1968.

The club, started by Thomas H Lowndes, also a founding member of Ringwood & District Community Association, has gone from strength-to-strength.

From informal meetings in members’ homes and local village halls, the club became affiliated to Hampshire Association for the Care of the Blind, now known as Open Sight, and eventually found a permanent home at Greyfriars Activity Centre in Ringwood.

The club became an independent charity in 2008 and maintains close links with the local community through involvement with the Old People’s Welfare Group.

A strong team of volunteers ensure that Tom Lowndes’ vision remains fulfilled by providing support and services to visually impaired people through home visits and the popular, fortnightly social club which offers a programme of entertainment and afternoon tea.

Brave soles wanted for charity Fire & Ice Walk Forest Holme Hospice charity invites you to walk barefoot across smouldering hot coals and razorsharp glass in their Fire & Ice walk.

The event will take place at Cobham Sports and Social Club in Wimborne on 11 October to raise money for local people affected by life-limiting illnesses.

The event is hosted and led by Scott Bell of UK Fire Walk, who will train participants.

Scott uses confidence boosting training to ensure the experience increases self-belief, and awakens inner strength. Scott is twice holder of the Guinness World Record for the ‘greatest fire walking distance’ and has led thousands of people across fire and glass with an outstanding safety record.

Forest Holme in Poole provides end-of-life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Anyone for a stiffener?

By Julian Hewitt, Fordingbridge Museum My mother’s advice to me was always to put enjoying yourself before housework and I have tried to follow that ever since.

It was therefore a surprise to me that when my son came to visit recently, he spent so much time ironing his shirts. I always make a point of buying shirts that don’t need ironing.

One of the laundryrelated things that took up people’s time in the past was starching clothes. In the 16th century the nuns of Syon Abbey were recorded starching altar cloths and church linen using starch “made of herbes.”

This was probably made using the roots of the cuckoopint flower which is sometimes called starchwort. This sounds an unpleasant substance

being, “hurtful for the hands of the laundresse… for it chappeth, blistereth and maketh the hands rough and rugged and withall smarting.”

Starch could also be made by boiling bran with water which was then left to stand for three days.

Candle grease or cooking fat was sometimes added to this to produce a gloss finish. Later wheat, horse chestnuts and potatoes were used to produce starch. This could be used to stiffen the elaborate collars and cuffs that we associate with the 17th and 18th century.

In the 19th century, rice starch and corn starch were used to produce the stiff cravats, collars and cuffs for men and stiff petticoats for women. Mrs Beaton’s bestselling ‘Book

of Household Management’ gave useful advice to those doing the laundry: ‘To give a shiny and smooth appearance to the linen stir round two or three times in the starch a piece of candle wax which also prevents the iron from sticking.’

She adds that for a high gloss finish you could add, ‘three or four drops of turpentine and a tiny piece of spermaceti’. The latter was a white waxy substance that came from the head of a sperm whale.

The final process was called glossing designed to achieve a very shiny finish, ‘… a peculiar heavy flat iron, rounded at the bottom and as bright as a mirror is used. It is pressed firmly upon the linen and rubbed with much force and this friction puts on the

gloss. Elbow grease is the principal secret connected with the art of glossing linen.’

BY BOILING BRAN WITH WATER WHICH WAS THEN LEFT TO STAND FOR THREE DAYS.

Fordingbridge Museum has some original packets of Robin Starch produced

by Recket & Colman.

This was produced in the late 19th early 20th century. These packets must have been later examples as they advertise a press button spray as an alternative.

I suspect that few people nowadays need to starch anything and are grateful that they are spared the, “elbow grease” involved in the process. I notice in the same section of her book Mrs Beeton recommends that for washing, ‘very old and rusty’ silk, ‘a pint of gin and whiskey should be mixed with each gallon of water’.

My wife tells me that if she was required to spend so much time on the laundry she could find much better uses for the gin and whiskey.

Boat trip with Chris Packham

Eight lucky Eco council reps/KS2 children from Parley First School had the pleasure and the privilege of joining Chris Packham, Paul Morton (Birds of Poole Harbour) and both of their teams on a special boat trip for the last leg of the UK National BioBlitz Tour.

Miss Roche and teaching assistant Miss Bingham accompanied the children and said, “Our children absolutely loved surveying the birds in Poole Harbour and also took home the very important message about needing to take action now to save our wildlife.”

In July, Colehill Evening Women’s Institute enjoyed an amusing talk by Steve Oxford from Oxford’s at Alweston, Sherborne. He spoke about the history of the family bakery that started in 1911 and brought a couple of boxes of bread pudding for members to try. The next meeting will be at Colehill Memorial Hall on 12 September.

Thelma Johns will talk about antiques.

‘Quack Team’ at the ready The 19th annual duck race in aid of Wimborne in Bloom will take place on the River Allen on Saturday 25 August at 4pm.

Without too much duckorum, the ‘quack team’ will be launched into the river at Mill Lane. Their journey will end beside the garden at the back of the Rising Sun in East Street – just the place for a ducks fizz should you win, or pop to a local café and celebrate with a slice of beakwell tart, quack forest gateau or piece of shortdrake.

Ducks cost £1 each. Buy them outside the Co-op and Waitrose stores on 18, 23 and 24 August and on race day. Prizes: 1st £50, 2nd £25, 3rd £10, 4th, 5th and 6th £5 each.

Museum manager’s amazing find

Rupert Barrington takes up reins of the centre named after his grandfather Football may not have come home just yet, but Rupert Barrington has.

He has taken over the reins at the Barrington Centre, in Ferndown, which was named after James Barrington, a prominent local businessman, over 30 years ago. Now, his grandson has been appointed as the new general manager. Rupert took up his post in August.

He comes with a wealth of knowledge in theatre having worked at the Jellicoe Theatre at Bournemouth and Poole College for 10 years.

He has just also completed a contract at the Regent Theatre in Christchurch.

Rupert said, “I can’t wait to take up the reins at The Barrington and continue Grandpa’s legacy, not only in making a success of the centre and its beautiful theatre but also in ensuring its future for generations to come.

I’ve got some great ideas that the team at PramaLIFE, who operate the Barrington, have welcomed and I can’t wait to get started.”

Rupert also works with his wife Jo, delivering Performing Arts classes to children.

Jo says “We’d love to bring some sessions over to Ferndown. Children can have such positive experiences when learning and doing something they love. I am very proud that Rupert can work somewhere with his family name above the door. We are all really excited!”

Borough of Poole Museum service manager, Michael Spender, has discovered an original, previously uncatalogued Augustus John painting at a country auction.

Augustus John (1878-1961) was a Welsh-born artist renowned for his portraits, famous for his Bohemian lifestyle and the greatest artist to have lived and worked in Poole. He spent much of his later life in the town and the surrounding areas, including Fordingbridge where he lived until his death.

Until now, Poole Museum has not owned any original Augustus John works. In May, it launched its first Augustus John exhibition in partnership with Salisbury Museum. The works on display have been loaned by museums around the country, as well as by the John family.

However, Michael Spender found the new piece in an auction catalogue following a Cotswold house clearance. Described as ‘in the style of Augustus John’, Michael’s professional eye instantly spotted that it was an original painted around the time that John and his family moved to Poole (circa 1911).

purchased using museum donations made by visitors to help acquire artefacts for the freeentry attraction. It’s sale price was £1,850.

Following positive authentication by Rebecca John, Augustus John’s granddaughter and the leading expert on his artwork, the piece is now thought to be worth tens of thousands of pounds.

‘Edwin on the Beach’ is now hanging in Poole Museum, along with 60 other pieces by the artist, which are currently on display until 30 September.

Ferndown mourns death of its mayor Obituary: Councillor Steve Lugg, the Mayor of Ferndown Councillor Steve Lugg, the Mayor of Ferndown, died on 20 July after a brief illness. He was aged 54.

Steve will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 25 years, Cathy; their five children and five grandchildren.

A town councillor since 2008, Steve was elected as the 36th mayor Ferndown in May. He had been deputy mayor three times. He was also a district councillor from 2011, becoming chairman of East Dorset District Council in 2015/16, and was elected to Dorset County Council in 2016.

Born on 29 May 1964, Steve grew up in Sherborne before joining the Household Cavalry. After leaving the army at 40, his first job was with Bournemouth Social Services. In 2005, he became chief executive of the Hampshire Association of Local Councils. He was also a member of the Royal Household as a Yeoman of the Guard, of the Queen’s Bodyguard.

Fully involved in the local community, Steve was a great advocate for Ferndown. He had been a school governor at Ferndown Upper School, a trustee at the Barrington Centre, and, until his death, president of the Ferndown Royal British Legion. Steve also had a great passion for live music and founded Live: Ferndown, which showcases the best local music talent.

The flag outside the council offices was lowered to half mast on the day he died.

The Mayor of Ferndown’s funeral, which will be an official civic and military funeral, will be at 1pm on 17 August at St Mary’s Church, Ferndown. The car park will be reserved for disabled badge holders and the funeral cortege only.

Mourners are asked to be seated early and those wishing to attend the funeral and refreshments at the Royal British Legion afterwards should contact 01202 892249 or email secretary@ferndown.gov.uk. Dress code is formal.

Vanessa Ricketts, Ferndown Town Council: Steve served his town and council for 10 years with huge dedication and commitment. He leaves a great legacy and Ferndown will miss him dearly. Despite illness he continued his mayoral duties for as long as he could with huge strength and determination.

Vikki Slade, Borough of Poole: A really lovely man who I first met whilst getting up at the crack of dawn to do boot camp on the beach… We then fought opposite sides of two elections in Ferndown but he was gracious and decent and showed great dignity in his work.

Mike Parkes, Ferndown Town Council: I’m proud to have served with Steve both as a councillor and a friend.

Lorraine Clark, Hopscotch Preschool: Steve was a huge supporter of the preschool and we will always remember and value his efforts and dedication.

Awesome Festival at St Mary’s

St Mary’s CE First School in West Moors held an Awesome Fest on 20 July to celebrate the end of the school year and the childrens’ achievements.

Instead of hosting it on a Saturday as usual, the school decided that holding it on a Friday would give them the opportunity to utilise staff and make the most of the very last day.

There was so much to do and see, including a bouncy castle, children’s entertainer Krazy Kev as well as face painting and a disco tent. There was also a barbecue, cake stand and a very unusual and beautiful prosecco stall – one for the grown-ups.

Nursery children dressed as their favourite superheroes, which added colour and fun to the field. With smiling faces and plenty of ice cream, the afternoon was a great success and raised funds for the school. It was also a positive initiative for the children.

The school unveiled a huge ‘A’ in celebration of their school motto, ‘Believe in better...be more awesome!’

Amazing art at Hillside Inspired by Henri Matisse’s ‘through the window’ painting, pupils of Hillside Community First School in Verwood had an inspiring outdoor Arts Week. This supported the hard work of the PTA who have improved the environments around the school.

Reception children used materials to weave through a fence outside their room and painted Friendship Stops to be used at playtimes. Year 1 created wind chimes from terracotta plant pots and painted bird boxes, whilst Year 2 built Peace Poles and decorated the posts along the patio. The

picnic benches near the Year 3 classrooms were painted in bright colours. Fun signposts for the school’s Woodland Walk, were created by Year 4 who also turned wooden spoons into garden gnomes and improved a view by painting people on the fence panels outside their classroom.

During the week, the school had the support of artist, Chloe Dowsett. She combined the children’s ideas to create two mural plans. All the children voted and the winning heathland design was painted on the wall next to the patio, assisted by groups of KS2 pupils.

Twiddling the mitts

Dorset schools well-represented Dorset schools were well-represented at Gratnellssponsored Science Technician of the Year Award 2017/18.

Dawn Clinton from Lady Manners School in Bakewell was the overall UK winner, with Tracey Black at St Aldhelm’s Academy, Poole taking the runner-up spot and Lorraine Collins at Highcliffe School, Christchurch, claiming third place. Dawn won over £2,000 worth of prizes and a personal cheque, whilst Tracey and Lorraine collected prizes for their schools. The competition is open to science technicians across the world. Pupils from Year 7 at Moyles Court School near Ringwood have been involved in a project to help dementia and Alzheimer patients at Poole Hospital.

During their textiles’ lessons, they have embellished 20 knitted ‘twiddlemitts’ with decorative and tactile features that help calm patients and make them feel more content and relaxed.

The mitts were knitted by local volunteers and donated to the hospital - but without the necessary ‘twiddly’ bits attached.

Moyles Court Textiles’ teacher, Mrs Sharp, first saw twiddlemitts at the Parma charity shop in Ringwood and was attracted by their colours and textures before learning of their benefits. From further research, she found the Poole Hospital on-line twiddlemitt appeal and contacted senior dementia nurse, Kate Jones, who was delighted to provide plain mitts for the children to decorate.

The children worked enthusiastically and tried their best to ensure that the haberdashery and recycled components were securely attached and safe for the patients, and that the finished mitts were aesthetically pleasing.

Mrs Sharp at Moyles Court School is very happy to receive plain knitted mitts for the children to decorate and pass on to Poole Hospital in the future.

Car 54, where are you?

The British Pedal Car Grand Prix, which first began in 1987, took place around the streets of Ringwood town centre on 8 July.

Sponsored by Ringwood Brewery (main sponsor), the spectator sport drew thousands of people. It started at 3pm and competitors did extremely well in the high temperatures.

All the pedal cars were impressively made, but some stood out from the rest. My favourite was the car belonging to Florist up my street, because it had been bedecked with flowers.

However, there were other interesting designs, such as a Minion cart, a crazy frog cart and

one decorated with flames.

The driver of the floral vehicle also carried a water gun, which he squirted at the crowd around the track. This did get the better of him on one of the corners, when his car tipped over as he was shooting. Thankfully, he was all right. Some took the race seriously but others were simply there to have fun and participate in the wacky community event.

There were 42 teams and three divisions: Under 17s, Ladies, and Men. Results: U17s, 1st Inferno; Ladies, 1st Squeals on Wheels; Mens, 1st Apollo Racing – a father and son team, which was very impressive, since only the two of them alternated throughout the two-hour race, whereas other teams had four or five members.

What’s on?

As well as events and activities, there will be two processions: a children’s procession in the afternoon and an evening illuminated parade. Both will feature wonderful community floats designed and built by local groups. It’s also still possible at this stage to enter a float. It’s free to enter and it will be so much fun to take part. Go to the Ringwood Carnival website and fill in an application form now. There are cash prizes to be won.

As part of the parades, there will be marching bands, steam traction engines, dance groups and feature vehicles. Both processions will be headed by the Carnival Queen Katherine Douglas, her attendants Georgi D’Cruze and Alana Morris, and two princesses Anastasia Harrison and Immy Brooks. They will be seated in a beautiful float drawn by the majestic Sampson Percheron horses.

In addition to the magnificent processions, there will be street entertainers, live bands and entertainment, a huge Adlam’s Fun Fair and fireworks at 9.30pm.

If you want to have the finest view of the carnival, you can also become a VIP. Anyone can become a VIP for £12 or £20 for a family ticket.

The Ringwood Carnival will raise and donate funds to local charities and organisations.

The carnival promises a day of fun and excitement as well as supporting some fabulous causes. This is not something you’re going to want to miss!

We did manage to stop the water spurting across the kitchen, and the plasterer’s clothes did dry out in the end, but from that day onwards I decided to stick to the law!

One of Dorset’s oldest real ale fans has been sampling his favourite tipple again, thanks to a tie-up between his care home and Ringwood Brewery.

Former army officer, Richard Earnshaw, 103, enjoyed the taste of best bitter at Brook View home in West Moors, where he moved earlier this year.

Run by family-owned Colten Care, the home features flagship beers on the menu and tasting sessions led by brewing experts.

Born in London during the First World War, Richard remembers having

his first pint of beer on the way to see an Arsenal match with his father and grandfather.

But it was not until

he and his wife moved to Dorset in 1984, that he tried Ringwood Brewery’s best bitter and declared it his favourite tipple.

Ritz surprise followed by royal garden party As part of the NHS 70th anniversary celebrations, Trudie Spicer, a branch member of the East Dorset and Ringwood NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF), won the Wessex Area NHSRF ballot to attend the Buckingham Palace Garden Party.

On arrival in London, Trudie was told she would be taken by taxi to a surprise venue for lunch beforehand. Unbeknown to her, Trudie’s son-in-law, who worked for the owners of the hotel, had arranged a wonderful reception at the Ritz.

Met and treated like a VIP, Trudie was given a special goodie bag and after lunch, she was taken in a chauffeur-driven Daimler to Buckingham Palace.

Alas, the Queen was not present but Trudie saw Prince Charles and Prince Edward.

ALL SPICED UP AT CINNAMON LOUNGE Review by Janine Pulford

Sobzi puree When a symphony of colour arrives at your table, it heightens your appetite.

Dipping pieces of poppadums in and out of an assortment of eyecatching and tasty pickles and sauces was the perfect way to start our Indian meal. It also kept us busy whilst waiting for our appetisers.

Sobzi Puree (mixed vegetables cooked in a Bhuna sauce wrapped in a pancake) and Aloo Chat Puree (potato cooked in a spicy, tangy sauce wrapped in a pancake) duly arrived. Worth the wait, they were tasty and filling; it is good to know the food is cooked fresh to order at Cinnamon Lounge.

side-salad added freshness and crunch and the lemon slice boosted the tang to pair well with the pancake. Though similar in appearance, each dish had its own distinctive flavours and we decided mine was the tastiest, despite being only mildly spiced. I prefer hot, but admit that we eat far too many chillies in our house. Even our salt pot at home contains naga chilli flakes.

When it came to the main courses, it was my husband’s dish that scooped the heat award as well as top marks for originality. He’d asked for a mince version of the award winning signature dish, Bombay Khan Sali, which is offered on the menu with

tender strips of chicken or lamb, cooked with boiled egg and delicate spices.

To his surprise it arrived with the chicken strips and mince. The sauce was spicy and the dish was topped with fried potatoes and crispy onions. It was so unusual, a Bengali treat. Nick enjoyed every morsel and said it was an ideal dish for him: “Not blisteringly hot, just right.”

I too was attracted to a signature dish, Sagathi Dal, until I noticed it included garlic, which can disagree with me. Front of house man, Shah, did not want me to be disappointed and immediately said it would be prepared without garlic.

This was a great gesture and meant I could have my

dish of choice.

Sagathi Dal was available with lamb, chicken or king prawns, which cost a little extra, but were my preference.

Fresh spinach was cooked through the dish and it also came with lentils combined with lemon juice and Cinnamon’s special selected spices. There were just three prawns and before you exclaim “that’s not enough!” I must mention that they were gigantic. Each was a meal in itself and I really couldn’t have eaten a fourth if I’d tried. The spices were a little on the mild side, but as the staff are so keen to please, it went back for a few more ingredients to ramp it up. Now that’s

service for you. Even though it tasted much hotter, I had to leave a little because I was so full – this was despite Nick and I sharing a Peshwari nan and special fried rice.

The rice was beautifully light and flavoursome, and the nan was a delectable treat. Sometimes nan bread is heavy and stodgy, but not this one. We were practically fighting over who should have the bigger half.

I won, but it wasn’t a victory I was proud of, because I was bursting out of my clothes by the end of the meal and couldn’t contemplate anything more to eat, whereas Nick was able to order himself a bowl of ice cream.

Craft Project

By Arabella Watkiss If you’re looking for an arts and crafts project, look no further that your kitchen cabinets!

The below project can be found on many websites which is why I cannot credit just one person for coming up with it. I tried making these mugs after seeing a post on Facebook about them and loved the result so I wanted to share it with you all.

For this project, you’ll need to scout your cupboards for some old white mugs or, if you really can’t find any, buy some cheap ones from the supermarket. This project will jazz up any ceramics you have lying about by giving them a colourful marbled effect.

What you will need: • • •

4 white mugs old nail varnishes a deep bucket

• •

a stick gloves

Method: Do this outside.

Fill your bucket, just above half way, with tap water. The temperature of the water doesn’t matter too much but just make sure it isn’t freezing cold. Then pour some coloured nail varnish into the bucket of water and swirl the nail varnish into the water with the stick, making sure that the varnish stays on the top of the water. The nail varnish should easily float. Put your gloves on and pick up your first mug. Carefully lower the mug into the water in a scooping action, making sure to touch the ceramic on the swirls of nail varnish. The varnish should stick to the mug and create a lovely colourful marbled effect. Leave the mug to dry. Repeat this with as many mugs and as many colours as you would like. It might be worth spraying them with a finishing spray to hold the nail varnish on, and these items are hand wash only.

Perhaps you want to install an extra bathroom to ‘up’ the price of your property, or perhaps you’re just looking for advice on which wall colours are best to entice prospective buyers.

Either way, we’ve got you covered.

Here are a few things to consider if you’re getting your house ready for sale and want to achieve the best possible price.

I’ve been told that it is the kitchens and bathrooms that really sell a house. With this in mind, think about replacing old kitchen cabinets as well

as loose, broken or run down floor tiles. If you don’t already have one, create a light and neutral colour scheme for the kitchen as well. Making your kitchen look good is an effective way to make your house more sellable.

Bathrooms are equally as important so re-tile, repaint and replace all old, stained or scaly sinks and bathtubs.

Adding a bathroom or even a utility room is apparently sometimes a good way to increase saleability. Families often search for houses with two bathrooms or more so they will be accommodated in the early and rushed mornings. Utility rooms are also popular, so if you have the space and money to

create one of these rooms, do think about it.

To sell a property, it’s best to paint walls in neutral colours, for example, magnolia or cream. A brilliant white might look a little bit harsh depending on the space, whilst bright or dark colours will make the space look smaller and darker so avoid these.

Vibrant patterns also may put buyers off, as they

will want to imagine how they will decorate; what it will be like when they live there. In some ways, before selling the house, it’s best to make it a blank canvas for the next owners to paint their life and tastes onto.

Repainting any faded wood on the outside of the house will also improve its look and therefore saleability.

Outdoor spaces have become increasingly popular in recent years so sprucing up your garden could mean an easier sell.

Decking is still popular, especially in the summer, since it provides a better surface to put garden chairs and tables on for those evenings outside with a glass of wine. It is also considered lower maintenance than having to maintain shrubbery. You or your future buyers will have to keep on top of cleaning it, however, so be warned.

It’s time to go back to basics. Before showing a house, de-clutter. For me, ornaments and bric-a-brac

can really clutter a house so try and minimise those.

Papers, unwanted books, dvds, CDs, shoes and clothes can be donated to local charity shops. This will not only aid the sale of your house but also make moving out much easier. Clean everything thoroughly inside and out.

Remember things that get forgotten like the guttering.

De-weed the garden and de-mould any corners of showers or windowsills.

Do all repairs as well.

Thoughts from the Rescue

mags4dorset and their advertisers have teamed up with Waggy Tails Rescue once again to let you see some of the dogs and small furry animals currently needing to be rehomed. Can you help in any way? Even if you can’t offer a home, there are many other ways of helping this local charity, which works hard to keep their rescued animals fit and healthy.

The recent hot weather has certainly been challenging for the staff at the rescue. Morning and afternoon walks have had to be retimed to avoid the heat, so this has meant asking the volunteers who help with the dogs to come in at different times. Everyone has pulled together to make this work.

Helen’s House is surrounded by woodland, but the pavements to get there have been too hot to take the dogs out some days. Gazebos have sprung up all round the exercise field, so that as the sun moves round during the day there is always some shade for the dogs and staff. The cabins have air conditioning so when the dogs are in, they are kept cool and to help them, the staff set up paddling pools for them to take turns in having a splash around.

Please think about your dogs in the hot weather and try to adjust their routine, so that they stay comfortable and healthy.

On Saturday 8 September, Waggy Tails will be staging its third concert at QE School in Wimborne.

The 2018 Variety Show follows on the success of the last two and it should be even better this year. There will be a range of acts from singers and dancers, to a ukulele band and an accordionist. verwood NEWS Taekwondo student competes at International World Championships Over 2000 people, from every continent in the world, vied for titles in the largest Taekwondo Championship the UK has ever seen.

Ben Coe, who has trained at Stephen Lamberth’s Dorset Schools of Taekwondo for nearly four years, competed in the fighting side of Taekwondo. The match was close but Ben was narrowly beaten by a Republic of Ireland fighter.

Ben also came 4th out of around 45 competitors in his division for his set movements.

He said, “It was a proud moment for me to fight and do my pattern at the World Championships; I will return and hopefully medal or even win next time. I have to put more work and practise in and listen to my instructor’s advice.”

Ben already has trophies and medals from UK competitions and would love to add a World Championship medal to his collection. Club instructor, Stephen Lamberth, said Ben had made a fantastic effort and he was very proud of all his students.

SHOUT OUTS: Ferndown Town Council passed a resolution on 23 July to support the Plastic Free Ferndown initiative and to appoint Cllr Peter Lucas as the town council representative on the Steering Group.

Barrington Centre: Penny’s Café is now plasticfree and the entire centre is aiming to become the first plastic-free community building in Ferndown.

PramaLIFE, who runs the centre, is aiming to achieve this by the end of September. Thanks go to PramaLIFE for pushing forward the initiative following liaison with Plastic Free Ferndown.

Official launch of Plastic Free Ferndown 18 August 2018 10am-2pm Ferndown residents urged to cut consumption of single-use plastic In a bid to reduce the use of single-use plastic in Ferndown, everyone is invited to the official launch of Plastic Free Ferndown (PFF) on 18 August outside the Barrington Centre in Penny’s Walk.

The launch, organised by the campaign’s steering committee, will include a delicious barbecue courtesy of the Flying Teapot.

Food will be offered free, but donations will be welcome, with all proceeds going to Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), the awardwinning charity spearheading Plastic Free Communities of which Ferndown is a part.

the day with a litter pick through Pennys Walk. Their findings will be on display.

The committee will be on hand outside the Barrington from 10am to talk about the campaign and suggest suitable alternatives to single use plastics. Residents will be encouraged to work towards making their town a ‘plastic free’ community by the end of the year. This does not mean everyone has to cut out using plastic completely, but that the town can demonstrate it is doing its best to reduce its consumption of single use plastic.

New ideas for achieving this will be welcomed.

Ferndown Upper School’s 15-strong School Council student committee voted to support the campaign following PFF’s visit and has passed three resolutions: to commit to changing how the school serves food in the café (ie review use of containers/plastic forks and knives); removing plastic liners from waste paper bins; collection of plastic lids for the Lush recycling scheme. These small changes will considerably reduce the usage of single-use plastic at the school.

Xerocad is now using paper bags rather than plastic, where possible, and now uses screwed up scrap paper for packing, rather than bubble-wrap.

Ferndown Fete on the Field has adopted the PFF cause and it is on the agenda for the next meeting. Harry Worth has confirmed that there will be a small 3p surcharge on the 5k and 10k runs next year to cover the cost of paper cups, rather than plastic ones.

Darling hopefuls queue for Neverland

Christchurch High Street was teeming with 244 youngsters on 15 July, as they waited in gorgeous weather outside the Regent to audition for Disney’s Peter Pan JR. Hopeful of being cast, the budding Peter Pans, Wendys and Captain Hooks started auditioning at 1.30pm and didn’t finish until over seven hours later.

Because of the overwhelming response, the show will now have three full casts, instead of the original two. Disney’s Peter Pan JR is being produced at the Regent from 11–15 December.

History creating history The Wimborne History Festival on 21 and 22 July marked two moments in time: the centenary of the end of the First World War and 100 years since women gained the vote.

The free event took place around the town and was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, local district, town and parish councils and Wimborne BID. Displays included the only airworthy Bristol Scout WW1 bi-plane in the world, which was on the Square, and a trench warfare exhibition. There was also a Suffragette march.

Crowdfunding for Memorial Lantern

After the flood At the end of June, news from Fordingbridge’s twin town, Vimoutiers, was not good. Whilst residents in Fordingbridge were enjoying good weather, Vimoutiers and surrounding areas were suffering from substantial flash flooding.

Following exceptionally heavy rainfall, friends of Fordingbridge Twinning Association in Vimoutiers reported that the River Vie rose and broke its banks in less than an hour with nearby homes being flooded with over a metre of water. Some 70 properties in the town were declared uninhabitable with many people losing all their belongings.

The town’s council is currently assessing the extent of the damage and applying to French central government for aid, having been designated an area affected by a ‘natural catastrophe’.

Thirty families were evacuated, and temporary accommodation was provided for 100 people. It is thought that many people will not be able to return to their homes for up to nine months. Other towns in the area were also affected, but Vimoutiers was deemed to be one of the worst.

Fordingbridge Twinning Association has sent its French friends good wishes for a speedy recovery.

To mark the Centenary of the end of WW1, a permanent memorial lantern has been uniquely designed to fit the Town Gateway Building.

It will be lit to recognise members of the armed forces from within the Ringwood community who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Ian Parmenter, an award winning blacksmith, has been commissioned to create the lantern in hand-forged stainless steel. It is based on a kneeling soldier holding a WW1 trench lamp.

The project will cost £5,000 including manufacture and installation and commissioning.

Donations are being held by the council and ‘ring fenced’ solely for the use of this project.

Every penny counts and is very welcome.

Rustic Fayre with silver lining

Verwood’s favourite day out is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The ‘not to be missed’ Rustic Fayre, run by Verwood Rotary Club, will hit its silver milestone on August Bank Holiday Monday and everyone is invited to join the fun.

Among the crowd-pulling arena acts at the Silver Rustic Fayre will be Olivants Big & Little horse display. Some of the usuals will also be there: dog agility; terrier racing, (guaranteed to make you laugh), and that messy sport of egg catching.

Set to attract thousands, the Silver Rustic will also include 80+ stalls, live music, 250 classic vehicles and a pet show.

Monster Bounce, Punch & Judy and Circus Whizz will keep the kids amused, whilst Pimms, beers and wine will be for adults only, and it wouldn’t be a Rustic Fayre without a BBQ and the duck race.

“Rusty” Vern Harris has been pivotal in organising the event for the last 25 years. “I’m not sure how I got the job in the first place,” he told Viewpoint.

“It must have been a lot easier

than trying to pass it on now.

From a very tentative start in 1994, Verwood Rotary Club has built the ‘Rustic’ into Verwood’s favourite day out; and that in itself is very rewarding for me and all involved.”

Does he love organising the event?

“Not until the Tuesday after, when I know we’ve had another successful ‘Rustic Fayre’. Then we’re able to donate the proceeds to local good causes.

That’s what it’s all about, and that’s when I ‘love it’,” said Vern. mags4dorset has provided the programmes for this great day out for the last 15 years and will be running off many more copies than usual to celebrate the silver occasion, so if you live in Verwood and the surrounding areas, keep an eye out for the 25th anniversary copy (see page 1).

West Moors Multi Activity Day

A rock climbing wall, a bouncy castle and live music were just a few of the activities and events that took place in West Moors on 14 July at the Multi Activity Day (MAD) on Fryers Field.

When we arrived, my Dad and I went to the live music tent to watch St Martin’s Gospel Choir.

They sang I will follow him as well as Amazing Grace and many more with great gusto. We walked around the field, visiting the various stalls. Among them was Colten Care, the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Riverford Organic Farmers as well as stalls for the kids like splat the rat, a human fruit machine and a bullseye.

My favourite part of MAD was going to the stall held by High Mead Farm. There, they had rabbits, chickens, a goat and a Polish cockerel, as well as produce to buy and some delicious honey that we bought. The field was also dotted with food stalls and an ice cream van – what more could you want! The event was from 10am-4pm and all proceeds went to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. A fun day was had by all.

JUMPING FOR JOY AT BROADWAY SHOWTUNES Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre, 19 July Review by Arabella Watkiss

A

fter the first set of songs, I was gobsmacked by the talent of the Big Little Theatre School, whose students are aged from four to 19. The cast opened the show with a colourful and fun number from Barnum, and built excitement with acrobatics and a variety of creative costumes, as well as impressive singing and dancing. All of the singers, whether they were 19 or eight, sang in tune, with amazing airflow and breath control and impressive phrasing. Even when cast members were doing lifts or moving around the stage, the sound stayed steady. There were many moments of stunning harmony and some difficult and well-executed partsinging.

The youngest company also wowed singing Our House. Although the performers were so young,

they were equally as talented and professional in their performance and brought fun and excitement to the stage and made such a big sound for such little kids.

The choreography was also second to none.

The numbers that involved the whole company were very visually impressive.

Choreography was imaginative and fun and was professionally carried out with skill, precision and agility by the companies. All the cast were rehearsed and in time with the music and each other. I particularly enjoyed the acrobatics in Join the Circus and the sass involved in the choreography of the Cell Block Tango as well as the switch to the Charleston for Hot Honey Rag. As well as a proficiency in singing and dancing, the acting was authentic and well done.

I also want to commend co-founders of the school, Michelle Guy and Colin Billing, as well as all the directors, supervisors, choreographers, musical directors, producers – of whom there are too many to mention – and everyone else who was involved in producing and organising such a wonderful show.

Praise must go to the band who tirelessly accompanied the twoand-a-half hour show with gusto and expertise, as well as the stage design and the sound and technical production without whom there would be no show.

I have huge admiration for those who provide support and innovation out of sight, from behind the curtains or from under the stage. All in all, the performance was spectacular and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Best Cry in Town Ferndown Town Crier, Mike Andrews came away with the accolade of ‘Best Content’ after attending the annual Wareham Town Criers Competition on the south bank of the River Frome.

The competition gave town criers up and down the land the chance to perform a home town cry and a special cry on the theme of ‘Dorset Flag’.

Other results: 1st (best crier) Andrew Fox, Ilminster, 2nd Roy Goodwin, Ilfracombe, who also won best dressed escort and couple and 3rd Peder Nielsen from Bromyard.

Mike said he was delighted with his win, especially as the category had been omitted from the programme, and it came as a lovely surprise.

EDITOR Young Musician of the Year Fordingbridge Rotary is undertaking a Young Musician of the Year event, which will culminate in the first round of the competition taking place at Forres Sandle Manor School on Tuesday evening 6 November.

The competition is open to all amateur musicians in full time education, up to the age of 17. There are two categories: solo instrument and solo vocal. The winner of this heat on 6 November, will be entered into the Rotary District final.

For Fordingbridge Rotary, this represents a new experience, so if there is a Rotary Club out there that does have experience that Fordingbridge can benefit from, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Fordingbridge Rotary, already has the backing and support of the new district governor, Allan Smith, and the Youth and Community committee, who all view it as an opportunity to promote Rotary in general, and Fordingbridge Rotary in particular.

Plastic Free Ferndown I was interested to read of the campaign to rid Ferndown of as much plastic as possible.

For quite some time now, we have been involved with an organisation called ideas2action based in Poole.

It is run by Monique and a team of great people who have set up collecting as many recyclable items as possible and finding homes for them. They are doing fantastic things and the organisation is expanding. Do look them up and look at their website, it will tell you everything.

It is surprising where different types of plastic can go for recycling. We also use Dorset Scrap Store which is very good for giving lots of unwanted things, including plastic, for children’s craft projects.

We also take unwanted/broken plastic plant pots to Stewarts Garden Centre, Gods Blessing Lane near Wimborne – they have a collecting area and the pots are all sent to be recycled into new garden items.

Thanks for creating this initiative – thankfully there are a number of good people out there who do want to save this planet.

I would like to put right some of the comments made in your article in 4Dorset, July issue (also printed in Viewpoint July).

While it is true that St Leonards hospital site is closing, the services it provides are certainly not. It is true that Fayrewood ward is moving to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Other services such as physiotherapy will be based in the local community.

This closure has been coming for 30 years as the building was only ever seen to be a temporary site, which is very difficult to access by public transport. A full public consultation was held by the Clinical Commissioning Group to bring community services in Dorset up to modern standards.

They took into consideration the petition and all the other support for St Leonards but the clinical needs of future services took precedence.

Dorset Healthcare Trust is the organisation which is concerned with the day to day running of all the community hospitals in Dorset.

DHC remains committed to providing high quality community services in east Dorset and all other areas.

Before the first VGFC teams started there was a very small number of girls playing football in Verwood. Girls who wanted to play quite often had to travel to other towns.

VGFC now have well over 120 girls playing regular football. It has also seen them become the only club in the area to be awarded FA CS Development Club status.

The players are aged from 4-18 and develop their skills using specialist outside coaches and dedicated support from the club. In a very short period, they have become one of the fastest growing clubs in the south of England and the largest girls’ club in Dorset.

VGFC chairman Darrell Wright puts this growth down to having ‘football for all’ ingrained throughout the VGFC ethos which means that every team is run fairly and every girl gets to play every match regardless of ability or perceived importance of match results.

This can be challenging but the support the youth leaders give as role models and mentors to the players makes it a lot easier as everyone at Verwood Girls understands that football should be fair and fun.

VGFC training sessions are all held at Potterne Park on Tuesdays, match days are on Saturdays.

EXPERIENCING A SHIFT ON THE NO EXCUSE CAMPAIGN

Recently, I was lucky enough to accompany two constables from the road-policing unit, PC Neil Wallis and SC Kier Dagnell, on a shift as part of the Dorset no excuse campaign.

The campaign aims to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured (KSIs) on Dorset roads.

The message is that there is no excuse for dangerous driving and the operation aims to stop speeding, drink or drug driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and/or using a mobile phone whilst driving.

Dorset Road Safe partners support the campaign.

The patrol car was fitted with an ANPR system, which automatically recognises number plates and flags up any previous offences that

a vehicle has been involved in, as well as whether the car has tax, insurance and an MOT. One that came up during the shift was a car that had been involved in the theft of lobsters, which I thought was an unusual crime.

The car also had a system called PNC and incar CCTV. During the shift, the officers carried out speed checks and stopped a young man for speeding near the Bear Cross roundabout. He was also breathalysed, and

passed the test.

Another young driver was pulled over and fined for not wearing a seatbelt, and a stolen moped was recovered.

There were also reports of two cars having a race, but nothing came of this as the police constables saw the reported car not engaged in the race.

I had to leave the shift one hour early as a driver who was pulled over for speeding, admitted to cocaine use and was arrested for drug driving.

I was surprised to learn that drink driving is less of a

problem than mobile phone offences. In fact, PC Wallis estimated that there are tenfold more mobile phone offences than drink driving offences today. He said, “Because drink driving has become so stigmatised, drinking offences have decreased a lot from previous years.

“Usually those who drink and drive are of the older generation,” he added.

Having just finished my undergraduate degree and being surrounded by a culture of binge drinking and club nights, I was astonished to hear this, but noted that

university students rarely have cars and having spoken to my friends, they are very aware of the risks of driving under the influence.

This may show that the no excuse campaign is having the desired effect.

Before going on the shift with the police, I knew about the campaign as I have seen signs dotted around the area. I was told that despite the campaign working, Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth are the worst for drink and drug driving offences.

Both the officers were friendly and polite to

motoring NEWS everyone they stopped, and I was pleased to hear that police officers can use discretion when they encounter offences.

For example, PC Wallis once stopped a man for speeding and it turned out that the driver’s wife was late for a chemotherapy appointment. It was obvious she was ill and the officer didn’t fine the motorist, which I think shows great compassion and shows that the police aren’t just out to get people, a common misconception that I have on occasion believed.

Whilst I was in the car, I was also made aware of how important it is to enforce road safety and not necessarily for the obvious reason that you might think.

Not only is it essential to reduce KSIs and fatalities, PC Dagnell, who joined the team in 2014, explained that stopping people for road offences often leads to the discovery of more critical offences. For example, he once stopped someone for a traffic offence, who had drug money in their van and thousands of pounds worth of drugs at home.

Both officers said they really enjoyed the job, that it was a job they could be proactive in and they felt that it actually led to catching those people who will cause damage and harm to others.

The no excuse campaign was started in 2010, when officers were paid overtime to participate in it. But in October 2014, to reduce the number of killed and seriously injured people,

the campaign had a whole team dedicated to it.

The experience accompanying the two officers whilst on patrol made me increasingly aware of how important it is to follow the road safety laws that have been put in place for a reason. Even glancing at a mobile phone just for one second could cause devastation – it’s just not worth doing it.
