National Trust Neptune at home in the sand Internationally recognised sand artist Mark Anderson has revealed his latest creation, that of Neptune, Greek god of the sea During 2015, a year-long South West Coastal Festival of events and fundraising will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the National Trust’s Neptune campaign, set up in 1965 to protect the coast and look after it for ever for the nation.

The Neptune sand sculpture has been specially created to commemorate this anniversary and is now on display at the ‘Best of British’ exhibition at Sandworld in Weymouth.

Since the 1920s, Mark’s grandfather, Fred Darrington, delighted millions of visitors with his wonderful sand creations on Weymouth Beach. Mark has continued and developed this tradition bringing smiles to visitors and welcome publicity for the resort.

Helen Mann, National Trust General Manager for West Dorset said: “I am delighted Mark agreed to work with us and create this magnificent sand sculpture of Neptune our coastal figurehead. Not only will this creation amaze and delight visitors to Weymouth’s Sandworld exhibition it will also help us raise awareness of the 300 miles of coastline we care for in the South West and why we need continued support from our visitors.”

It costs £3,000 per year per mile to look after the 300 miles of coastline. That’s a cost of £1million pounds just to manage the existing coastline and ensure access is maintained.

Over the last 50 years, public and partnership support have helped raise over £65 million for the Trust’s Neptune Coastline campaign.

The coast in the South West is visited and enjoyed every year by more than 22 million people, with 63% of people regarding visiting the seaside or coast as important to their quality of life.

Throughout the year coastal events will be taking place at National Trust places across the South West including a big beach picnic in July.

The sculpture of Neptune will be on display at Sandworld until the end of November and National Trust members get discounted entry to the whole exhibition.

Bishop briefs on South Sudan

A recent guest speaker at Wimborne Rotary, Bishop Samuel Peni from Nzara, reported on the progress of improving lives of local people in war-torn South Sudan and the recent formation of a new Rotary club there – only the second in the country.

He updated the club on the success of Wimborne Rotary’s micro-finance project, which has already provided for more than 40 women to support their families through their new businesses and return the initial funds to benefit more.

In partnership with the Anglican Deanery of Wimborne, Rotary continues to raise money to provide the funds needed to improve the future for the children of Nzara through better healthcare and educational facilities, with a Rotary event planned at the Minster on 4 June when former MP Robert Key will give a talk on the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta.

Club President Derek Radley said, “We were delighted to welcome Bishop Samuel to Wimborne and to hear his first-hand account of how the funds provided by the Anglican Deanery and by Rotary are being put to good and effective use. A great deal remains to be done, and we shall continue to support this deserving cause.”

WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES WANT

FROM NEW GOVERNMENT In the first survey of small business owners to be conducted since the 2015 UK General Election, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) reveals results from 2,327 small firms

T

he FSB research found well over a third (35%) of the businesses questioned wanted a sustained economic recovery to be the top priority for the new Conservative Government in the next parliament.

Neil Eames, Development Manager for the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “This response from FSB members shows first and foremost businesses want stability and certainty. This requires putting public finances on a sound footing, and then for Ministers to give a comprehensive vision for how they will support enterprise followed by a clear timetable for when they will deliver it.”

Other important priorities for business owners were lowering the cost of doing business and ensuring

growth in every nation and region of the UK. When asked what issues they would like the Government to focus on over the next five years, well over half (53%) said they wanted Ministers to reduce the regulatory burden on business, with simplification of the tax system a close second on 51%.

Business owners were also clear that reforming business rates and improving the employability of young people were important benchmarks for the next five years.

As part of the survey, FSB members were also asked to say how confident they are the new Government will deliver for small businesses.

Many appeared positive with half (51%) saying they are either confident or very confident. However, with over a quarter (28%) claiming to be either unconfident or

very unconfident, Ministers will have to move quickly to demonstrate that they will truly do all they can to back small business.

Neil Eames, added: “Today’s wide ranging research sends a very clear message on what small businesses want from the new Government – a supportive, light touch tax and regulatory environment in which to grow their business, creating prosperity and jobs. Over the five years of this Parliament, our member’s top priorities are to lighten the burdens of regulation and tax, reform broken business rates, support the development and skills of young people, and improve broadband and mobile connectivity. We look forward to meeting with Ministers to discuss how we can help make this happen and continue to foster the economic conditions which allow enterprise to flourish.”

Pretty in pink Phyllis Dawes celebrated her 100th birthday at Colten Care’s Fernhill care home last month. Relatives from as far afield as Wales travelled to Longham for the celebrations. Chef Gary Parsons cooked a birthday cake with pink icing - Phyllis’ favourite colour - and staff joined in a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday.’ Phyllis, who received a congratulatory card from The Queen, took the landmark birthday in her stride saying: “I’ve had a wonderful time.”

Christchurch Food Festival's Market was the place to be on 9-10 May as thousands descended on the town to experience the delights of the 16th annual Food Festival.

The festival market was expanded with the addition of a festival village at Christchurch Quay, which also drew huge crowds eager to soak up the atmosphere, browse the stalls, choose some food and drink, listen to music and watch the demonstrations.

Levi Roots was the star of Saturday when he entertained with three full demonstrations cooking some Caribbean recipes and even getting the audience to join in with his Reggae Reggae song.

Sunday’s demonstrations included Masterchef contestant Dean Edwards and the festival’s patron, Lesley Waters, who was joined in her first session by Alex Aitken.

Sunday also saw the Family Fun Day opposite The Kings Arms with lots of activities for children as well as more food stalls.

Vicki Hallam, Chairman of the Food Festival Committee, said: “We had a really fantastic time at the festival market and the festival village.

very well as the festival is so popular now that it meant that crowds could spread out a bit.

“The village on the Quomps at Christchurch Quay had a great atmosphere and it was the perfect place for our demonstration theatre. All of the chefs complimented us on its position.

“We have had so many messages of thanks from traders who did great business, some of them saying that they had sold out of all their stock on both days. The festival really does go from strength to strength but it could only happen with the help of all our sponsors and the volunteers who get involved in stewarding all through the weekend. I would like to thank every one of them for their sterling efforts.”

Dorset County Council seat shake up Proposals for an extra Dorset County Council seat are out for consultation.

The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking people to comment on its draft proposals for new county council division boundaries.

An eight-week public consultation on the recommendations is open to anyone who wants to have their say on new county council electoral divisions, division boundaries and division names across Dorset and will end on 6 July 2015.

The Commission’s draft recommendations are that there should be 46 county councillors in the future, one more than at present. The recommendations also outline how those councillors should represent 34 single-member divisions and six two-member divisions across the county.

The full recommendations and detailed interactive maps are available on the Commission’s website at www. consultation.lgbce.org.uk and www. lgbce.org.uk. Hard copies of the

Commission’s report and maps will also be available to view at council buildings and libraries.

Ferndown Town Council celebrates move Signed sealed and delivered - Ferndown Town Council is now welcoming residents to its new offices in the Barrington Centre

T

own Mayor Cllr Mike Parkes and the Chairman of the Barrington Centre, Chris Allen, signed the lease for the three rooms which form the new offices.

The ceremony was watched by town council staff who have have been in the new premises since 8 April. Enquiries at the new offices have trebled compared to when the council was based at King George V Pavilion.

Town clerk Vanessa Ricketts said: “The town council is in a far better place to serve the residents and we can provide a better service for them. It is important that democracy is seen in action.”

The Mayor added: “It is wonderful to have the council in the centre of the town, something which I have wanted to achieve for the 17 years I have been a councillor.

Chris Allen explained: “The Barrington Centre is for the community so it is the perfect place for the town council. I am delighted they are now here.”

Council meetings will be held in the conference room at the Barrington where the town crest is to be displayed as a sign of civic pride.

Vacancy The Town Council has a 3 vacancies (Central Ward, Central North and Ferndown Links Wards) which will be filled by co-option. Anyone who wishes to be considered for a vacancy should write or email the Town Clerk by Monday 29 June 2015

DEER CRUELLY SLAUGHTERED FOR ‘FUN’ “Deer are being slaughtered by dogs as part of an illegal sport or poached for their meat,” Dorset Police’s Wildlife Co-Ordinator, Inspector Steve Marsh The shocking discovery of nine deer carcasses found by members of the public reflects an increase in this kind of wildlife crime in the county.

Seven were found at the bottom of Randalls Hill near Lytchett Minster and another two had been dumped at the Slough Lane bridle path near Frenches Farm, Upton.

All nine deer had dog bites on their rears, their insides removed and throats cut.

Police Sergeant Jane Mooney, of Purbeck’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “These cruel wildlife attacks appear to have been carried out for ‘fun’ as there are no signs of butchering.”

Inspector Marsh added: “I would like to reassure the public that, together with partner agencies, we are taking these crimes extremely seriously and will prosecute offenders accordingly.

“We currently have robust patrols in targeted areas and can only ask that the public remain vigilant to such crimes and come forward with any information.”

CALL FOR COMMUNITY TO BACK BARRINGTON Ferndown residents are being asked to champion their community centre

T

he Barrington Centre and Theatre is busier than it has been for years but success has brought with it additional costs which had not been anticipated. Now local groups and bands which use the centre are rallying round to raise money, including Ringwood and Burley Band which gave a concert in the theatre on 24 May to help fund essential soundproofing work .

Despite the Barrington being owned by East Dorset District Council, it is run

by Ferndown Community Association, a registered charity, which is having to fund half of the work.

Centre Manager Andy Bryant is now appealing for help to support the building.

The theatre, which seats 255 people, or over 400 standing, was designed for community use including live music. A PRS licence was granted for amplified music performances, despite the fact that there was no soundproofing system.

The Barrington Theatre is now a popular venue for bands hosting tribute acts and live events on an almost weekly basis. This has resulted in a noise pollution complaint directly to the Environmental Health at EDDC. Andy Bryant explained: “It seems like we’ve become a victim of our own success.

The live acts are very popular and are making money.

Many residents living close to the Barrington attend the shows and are extremely supportive. Unfortunately the building was not built in the same way as a modern theatre and the acoustic insulation wasn’t considered.

As a result, we have had to install an extensive acoustic wall at the back of the stage and an acoustic ceiling.”

This cost was £23,500 and while EDDC has paid half, The Barrington has to

fund the remainder and this unexpected bill is causing concern.

Andy explained: “This is something we had never foreseen or planned for.

This acoustic work had to be completed or we would have been placed into a licence review with the extremely real threat of being closed. The Community Centre aspect of the building does not generate enough revenue to keep the building open and the 15 staff members employed. We need the music to bring in revenue.

“We currently receive a grant from Ferndown Town Council and from EDDC but due to funding restrictions these have an uncertain future. These grants are to help towards general running costs but in actuality don’t even cover our electricity bill.”

Absolutely WI in Ferndown has already made a generous donation towards these costs and Harmony Twist are also planning a fund-raising show in August.

“We have only started.”

Andy added. “The next step needed to bring the building up to the modern standard expected to attract the headline acts and bigger shows, to secure the future of the centre, is to install a new stage floor and new LED lighting which will cost around £20,000. The current floor is only a temporary ply board covering which was put down over 10 years ago.

“We need increased support from the entire community and we would like to invite anyone to help us bring this amazing community facility into the future. If you think you can help please get in touch.”

o one at Parley Golf and Equestrian centres realised that mum Alex was pregnant until baby Petal, was spotted in a field.

Fit and healthy the cria, is now living with three adults on the Parley Court estate, which is situated opposite Bournemouth Airport and enjoying all the attention from visitors.

Jane Wyatt, who runs the equestrian centre, said: “We have the alpacas as pets really and the visitors love to see them. I only learned that the mother had given birth when one of the staff came

and asked if I knew we had a baby alpaca in the field.

“I rushed down there and couldn’t believe it. She was healthy and her mum was looking after her well.”

Alpacas - Vicugna pacos in Latin - are from South America and are part of the camel family.

Bring Your Dog To Work Day is an annual nationwide event that raises money for charities dedicated to making a difference to the welfare of dogs. On Friday 26 June, businesses from across the UK will welcome their dog loving employees into the workplace, along with their loyal four-legged companions, all in the name of charity. All proceeds this year go to

Margaret Green Animal Rescue will be offering the service between 11am to 3pm at the Recreation Ground, Worgret Road, Wareham. The event has been organised by Purbeck District Council and environment manager Richard Conway explained: “Dog micro-chipping will become compulsory in 2016 for all dogs, so why not take advantage of this event and get your dog chipped for free.”

He continued: “Margaret Green Animal Rescue ran a dog chipping event for us in Upton in April where almost 50 dogs were micro-chipped. Having your dog micro-chipped is one of the best ways to increase its chances of getting home if lost or stolen.”

Helen Chittock, manager at Margaret Green’s Lincoln Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre for Dogs, said: “We are very pleased to be able to offer this free micro-chipping and would urge anybody that hasn’t yet had their dog micro-chipped to come and see us on the day.

“It is so important to us to help local owners and their dogs – having your pet micro-chipped gives that extra peace of mind should something happen”.

The law also states that all dogs must wear a collar and tag, with their owner’s name, address and telephone number.

QE School proud to be purple When it came to supporting English teacher Julia Collins the community at Queen Elizabeth School in Wimborne has proved it is first class Mrs Collins, who has been teaching at QE for more than a decade, was diagnosed with renal failure over three years ago. Due to the unwavering support from the school and Headteacher Martin McLeman, she has continued to work whilst administering dialysis for 10 hours every night at home. Together with 6,000 others in the UK, she has been on the Kidney Transplant waiting list for the past three years – this list accounts for 90% of the people waiting for organ transplantation.

However, due to the shortage of donors, fewer than 3,000 kidney transplants take place every year.

The student council were keen to support Mrs Collins when she decided to take part in Kidney Research UK’s London Bridges fund-raising walk in July and decided to hold an nonuniform day.

However, before the fundraising event took place, Mrs Collins received the call she had been waiting for and received a new kidney at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth on 19 March.

The guest of honour at the non-uniform day was naturally Mrs Collins who was well enough to join staff and students dressed in purple, the charity’s colour. So far, £1,000 has been raised for photographs on their fund-raising day.

Coalition government at St Mary’s Pupils and staff from St Mary’s CE First School in West Moors took part in an election special at the Houses of Parliament As the votes of the 2015 General Election were still being counted, year 4 pupils experienced a ‘mini’ election of their own.

Political party lines were drawn as each ‘party’ of children drafted their own manifestos before campaigning began. The ‘Red Saints’ emerged victorious with their pledges to ban smoking and give more aid to developing nations. However no overall majority was reached and a coalition ‘government’ was formed between ‘Red Saints’ and ‘Golden Keepers’. Leader of the ‘Red Saints’ and new prime minister, Megan, vowed to run the country in accordance with the school motto – ‘Believe in better and be more AWESOME!’

Doorstep to school with new bus network A new strategy by the day and boarding school Moyles Court, to bring its outstanding individualised education to more families, has delivered fee reductions and a new transport network.

The school’s transport network will be expanded from September to cover a wider area with six routes. Buses will now extend as far as Lyndhurst and Lymington, Totton, Bournemouth, Poole, Wimborne and South Wiltshire. service will cost far less than bringing your children to school by car and will help working families cope with their busy lives.”

Headteacher Richard Milner-Smith concluded: “Moyles Court does what small schools do best. Every child here is known and with small class sizes and a committed, experienced team of teaching professionals, pupils are able to develop in a caring, disciplined and supportive environment. With our reduced fees and subsidised bus network we hope to be able to make such a wonderful environment more accessible for many more families.”

Sunny outlook at 3LX A new outdoor learning environment has been created at Three Legged Cross First School after it was awarded £3,000 from the 3LX Solar Fund.

There is an area for the children to use at playtimes where they are able to learn about the nature and wildlife around them. It can also be a space that children can sit in during breaktimes if they wish to have a more relaxed break. Children are being encouraged to take care of the area, joining in the maintenance of the garden, learning how to grow their own plants and vegetables and to appreciate the natural environment around them.

Blind donation HANDED OVER IN SENSORY GARDEN Alan Dean MBE from the Rotary Club of Ferndown handed over a cheque to Dorset Blind Association on 19 May. The £285 was raised by Rotary members who flew through the air on a zip wire and was in addition to £1,000 already raised for the charity by the club.

The Dorset Blind Association helps thousands of people every month and it costs £325 a year to support each member with vital services including social and activity clubs as well as home-visiting volunteers.

The association has 23 clubs around Dorset and was chosen by Ferndown Rotary to receive the donation because Alan Dean’s wife Vera has macular degeneration.

Alan has also spent the last three years project managing the creation of the sensory garden at the Model Town, where the presentation took place.

Jannine Loveys, Community and Events Fund-raiser for Dorset Blind Association thanked the Rotary Club for their generous donation.

mags4dorset would like to congratulate Alma Pulford on reaching her 103rd birthday on 19 May Born in the same year that Scott and his team reached the South Pole only to find that Amundsen had beaten them to it, she arrived in this world just a month after the Titanic went down. Alma is the mother in-law of Janine Pulford, (editor of 4Dorset) and Ben and Louis’ Nannan. She has four children, Janice, Gilly, Nicholas (married to Janine) and Robert and she was married to the single most important figure in the history of the British film poster: Eric Pulford who died in 2005. Alma was as spritely on her birthday as she was 20 years ago and enjoyed a small family get together.

A visit to Wimborne Model Town with its one tenth scale models will thrust that feeling of greatness upon you. Built well over 50 years ago, the little town continues to surprise and amaze visitors. And when you’ve exhausted looking for the ‘little people’ you can relax in the sensory garden or take another trip down memory lane at the model railway.

Fowler The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, Lao Tzu

Over the last 17 years I’ve interviewed many inspirational people, and Barbara Fowler is no exception. Not because she runs her own business, women in business are not unusual these days, but because of her age when she decided to set it up and the sentimentality behind it.

Barbara says: “Women tend to put their own dreams to one side, they get married and have a family. I did.

“It was more important to bring up my daughter and get her a good education and help my husband David run his business. Eventually when all those boxes were ticked, I thought now it’s time for me to have my dream.”

And have it she did - in her early 60s when most people look forward to slowing down, Barbara founded Internet-based company mybabylog.com.

“I am a fighter” Now at 66 she has seen her dream become reality. Her company mybabylog.com is thriving and she sells products worldwide. Yet she doesn’t see herself as exceptional, “I am a fighter. I came out of my mother’s womb with a pair of boxing gloves on and have been battling my way ever since. I believe you can do anything if you set your mind to it. You must never give up. Never give in. Never take ‘no’ for an answer.”

Even so, her family comes first and that is very much the inspiration behind the business. “At the end of the day that’s all that matters. That’s what we’re here for. That’s what we do and as you get older, I think you want to hand down some memories.”

Memory chest for keepsakes

She shows me a mybabylog memory chest for saving those little keepsakes new parents treasure. Inside the chest are boxes for ‘my baby teeth’, ‘my first lock of hair’ and ‘my hospital ID band.’

I still have those items for my children but they’re scattered around the house - a memory chest would have been a much better idea.

There’s also space for many other ‘firsts’ including ‘my first heartbeat’ and ‘my first hand and footprint’- a couple of extras that Barbara offers. She is also an agent for Steiff teddy bears and sells ‘My first Steiff’. If these boxes had been available when my boys were little, I can think of many more items I would have stored. As humans we seem to be hard wired to be sentimental.

And Barbara is more so than most because framed and hanging on her lounge wall are her daughter’s first plaits; Siobhan now has two children of her own Noah (5) and Isla (3) and of course Barbara dotes on them too.

“I want to do it for philanthropy”

But to step out of domestic bliss and take up an Internet-based challenge in her later years when, by her own admission she is comfortably off, was a brave thing to do. It was a steep learning curve and Barbara gives credit where it’s due, “David is much better than I am [using the Internet]. I could not do this without him. He also helps with the paperwork.”

And she explains, “I am not doing this for the money. I am doing this because it’s a dream. I want to do it for philanthropy. I want to be able to help sick babies and would ultimately like to set up a charity.”

Don’t slow down just because you’re retired

She also wants to inspire older people and adds, “A lot of people come to Bournemouth to retire. If you slow down and walk the beach, you won’t get the best out of life. A lot of people have ideas and they’ll never do anything about them. I want people to succeed. If I can do it, they can do it.”

She uses the analogy of taking one step at a time to climb Mount Everest to illustrate her own journey to success. “If you set your mind to it, you can do anything,” she says.

COMPETITION

Age is an advantage

So is age an advantage? “Yes. I have been around the block a few times and lived in four different countries. This all adds to a broader outlook on life. After all, most of the world leaders are all older, wiser people. Why, even Hillary Clinton is hoping to become the first woman president of the United States at 66 – the same age as me. She has great life experience, so I do see age as an advantage.”

Is there time for anything else?

I ask Barbara what she does in her spare time, fully expecting her to say she flakes out on the sofa.

Far from it: “I work on my children’s stories, swim 50-60 lengths twice a week, attend weekly aqua classes, love walking our boxer puppy Lottie, and spend quality time with David, Siobhan, Paul, Noah and Isla.

Life is good and I am very grateful.”

A box filled with love

I’m beginning to think Barbara is supergran and have to blink away an image of

her in a shiny red cape as I realise she’s still talking and telling me the reason why she started mybabylog. com: “To know I am helping people to value, save and treasure precious memories, which one day their children will really appreciate.” Then she adds, “Just imagine being gifted a box filled with love on your 18th birthday.”

And her sentimentality shines through making me realise how a little more of this emotion would go a long way to making the world a better place.

Originally planned to celebrate the Cherries’ promotion to the Premier League, (a first in its 116 year history), it got bumped to a victory tour after they also secured the Sky Bet Championship title on 2 May. What a dream fulfilled for manager Eddie Howe who wanted to see the Cherries lift the trophy. And lift it they did in front of an estimated 60,000 supporters who cheered them from pier to pier.

T

he two earthquakes which have devastated Nepal have been especially poignant to students at The Arnewood School in New Milton which has close links with the country and its children.

Six years ago the school raised thousands of pounds for a new primary school in Nepal and even helped build it themselves.

So when news of the Nepalese disasters broke, the thoughts of those at Arnewood immediately turned to that small sister school they helped to create.

Fortunately the school, although damaged, survived the quake. But the charity DCWC Nepal, which Arnewood had worked with to get the school open, has lost a number of its other school buildings.

So to continue its support, staff and students organised a fund-raising day and have so far raised £2,463 for DCWC Nepal and its bid to re-open the schools.

Students wore non-school uniform in return for a donation, held cake sales and paid for the chance to throw water at teachers in the stocks.

Head of school, Nigel Pressnell, said: “Nepal holds a very special place in all our hearts.

“In 2010 a group of our students went to Nepal to help build and open the school; we were so proud to see it up and running.

“When we heard of the earthquake disaster our thoughts immediately turned to that school and the others our friends at DCWC Nepal have helped to open.

“We were relieved that our school had survived the worst of the quake but we were deeply saddened to hear of the other schools that had been destroyed.

“That devastating news made us all determined to raise as much money as possible to help DCWC Nepal on the path to re-building the schools again.”

In June 2009 trustees of DCWC Nepal visited Arnewood to raise awareness about the country and begin fundraising for a new school.

By the end of 2009 more than £4,000 had been raised and the new Baikaplik Primary school was officially opened by a group of Arnewood students in the summer of 2010.

Arnewood also later contributed to the school’s library extension.

DCWC (Development of Children and Women Centre Nepal) was established in 2003 to help the poor women and children of Nepal by providing educational and health facilities.

Since that time the charity has gone onto build 15 schools and a hospital in various rural areas of Nepal.

FIREFIGHTERS ANSWER NEPALESE CALL FOR HELP

T

en Hampshire firefighters have returned from Nepal after being deployed as part of the UK International Search and Rescue (UK-ISAR) team helping the recover country recover after the first devastating earthquake on 25 April.

Members of the UK-ISAR team, including Hampshire firefighters, focused efforts into search and rescue, travelling into remote areas to carry out needs assessments and they managed to stabilise hospital buildings so that they could be put back into use. Lee Giffard, who deployed as part of Hampshire’s urban search and rescue team said: “When we arrived it was just a scene of devastation. There were lots of people who were injured and so many who had lost their homes. “Our first priority was to search for and rescue anyone we could - you live in hope that you might find someone. We met local people who were very welcoming, and took comfort in us being there. They were extremely humble and seemed to be resilient to what had happened.”

The Department for International Development deployed a team of more than 60 search and rescue responders and medical experts to support the relief effort in Nepal. The Hampshire team left the UK on Sunday 26 April and returned just before the second earthquake struck.

Tim Marsh, who was also deployed from Hampshire said: “It’s such a privilege to be part of Hampshire’s USAR team.

We have specialist training which allows us to respond to extraordinary incidents here in Hampshire and other places around the world. It’s training you hope you never have to use, but when you do, you just hope it makes a difference.”

Winton Carnival celebrates its 10th Anniversary on Saturday 27 June 2015

Transforming the high street into a crazy party place, this hugely popular Bournemouth event starts with a parade along Wimborne Road at 10.45am and continues to Winton Recreation Ground, where the fun reigns until 7pm. verything kicks off with the grand parade featuring community groups, schools, local businesses and marching bands.

There’s even a trophy for the best entrant.

The procession wends its way noisily down a crowd-lined high street and on to Winton’s 100-year-old Recreation Ground. But there is nothing old fashioned about what takes place there!

Besides a full sized funfair and a multitude of attractions, the area is dominated by a live stage featuring music from local bands and performers - ranging from rock ‘n’ roll and jazz through to soulful gospel and world music.

The carnival was founded in 2006 as an event designed to bring together the community. Unlike many similar events it is non-profit making, run entirely by volunteers and doesn’t support any specific charity.

Winton Carnival - Saturday 27 June 2015 “The thinking behind the Carnival,” says spokesperson Stephanie Harrison, “is that a community that enjoys itself together is more at ease with itself and less likely to throw up the kind of problems that can surface in more fragmented and less cohesive urban settings.”

The communal nature of Winton Carnival is reflected in the way it is run. There is no local council involvement and everything is organised by a handful of volunteers. That is quite a responsibility because an estimated 10,000 people are reckoned to enjoy the carnival fun across the course of the day.

One of the most encouraging aspects of Winton Carnival is that on every day that it has been held, the sun has shone. The organisers say that, as it is the Carnival’s 10th birthday, they hope the sun will shine even brighter than ever!

The Carnival is encouraging more schools and local community groups to get involved in this year’s event, which is set to be the biggest and best ever!

Last year’s Best in Parade trophy was won by local Rainbows, Brownies and Guides with their brightly themed Noah’s Ark float - a double decker bus decorated in zebra print with the children dressed as different animals. Can your school group win the trophy this year?

Hardy country Film celebrated in

Film goers inspired by the new version of ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’, one of Thomas Hardy’s best loved stories, are to have the opportunity to see Bathsheba Everdene’s on-screen dresses.

Two of the costumes worn by actress Carey Mulligan who plays Bathsheba are on display at Hardy’s Cottage in Higher Bockington until 5 July.

Much of the filming of ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ took place in Dorset.

The book was written in the tiny cob and thatched cottage when Hardy was 34 years-old. This was his fourth novel but first literary success and nearly 150 years on, the costumes are bringing the cottage where he was born to life.

To celebrate the film, National Trust properties Hardy’s Cottage and nearby Max Gate – where Hardy later lived and died – will be filled with the words and music of true Hardy country. Tim Laycock and the New Hardy Players will celebrate the work of Thomas Hardy, and some of the Players appear in the film.

Howard and Alison Payton of the New Hardy Players now live in Dorset, and have a lifelong passion for Hardy.

Howard appears on screen as an Everdene farmer and Alison as a farm worker.

At 15, Howard read ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ at school.

He said: “I was hooked from page one, and somehow Hardy dictated my life. Now 50 years on, I have come full circle. We farmed livestock and trained working collies, and here we are in Hardy Country, performing with the New Hardy Players, and with the added delight of being supporting actors in the film.

“Hardy has been a huge influence.

Many years ago, I even proposed to

Alison with Gabriel Oak’s words to Bathsheba ‘…whenever you look up, there I shall be – and whenever I look up, there will be you.’ ” Martin Stephen, National Trust Visitor Services Manager, said: “Hardy’s Cottage, Max Gate and the surrounding countryside were at the heart of Hardy’s life. As well as standing in the very rooms in the cottage where he grew up and wrote his first great works, you can wander through the rich woods and heathland from which he drew his inspiration.”

Hardy was hugely influenced by what he called his Wessex – ‘partly real, partly dream-county’. The walk from the new Hardy’s Birthplace Visitor Centre, a joint project between the National Trust and Dorset County Council, follows Hardy’s footsteps through Thorncombe Wood to the cottage, and out on to heathland.

These special places were engrained in the young Thomas Hardy’s mind and translated into his writing – including memories of walking the Roman road with his mother to Puddletown, which became Weatherby in ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’.

Sir Andrew Motion has always been hugely influenced by Hardy’s poems, and on Hardy’s birthday on 2 June he’ll open a new ‘Writing Places’ season with a Hardy poetry reading and talk at Max Gate.

On the evenings of 9 and 10 July, the New Hardy Players will perform Hardy’s ‘The Return of the Native’ in the garden of Max Gate.

Commemorative cup comes home

There’s a time capsule buried in the United Reformed Church in Verwood

No one knows what’s in it or where it is but it’s a mystery that intrigues visitors, especially children.

However, part of the church’s past of has been discovered in a ‘time capsule’ in Rugby. And this will form part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Sunday School this year.

Irishman Pat Kelleher bought an old chemist shop in Rugby and when he opened a bricked up attic room stepped into what he described as a time warp.

From the old school books and children’s comics he found, he thought the room had been hidden for around 60 years.

Amongst the general rubbish and bric-a-brac, he discovered something of

historic value – a translucent bone china cup celebrating the centenary of Verwood Congregational Sunday School in 1915.

He took the cup back to Ireland and using the power of the Internet, managed to trace it back to the church in Manor Road through Verwood Historical Society.

Church archivist Linda Munn was delighted when she was contacted about the commemorative cup.

“It is a wonderful part of the history of the church and we are delighted that Pat made so much effort to return it to us,” she said.

Verwood’s Congregational Church, which became the United Reformed Church in 1972, was formed in 1802, making it the town’s first church. In

1878, a more substantial building was opened in Manor Road, which is now the library and this was also used as a school. The dual use caused problems and the present building was opened in 1906, a hall added in 1926 and it was extended in 1956.

Further modernisation means the building, with its church, hall, kitchen and meeting space is now a popular community facility in the town. There is a toddler group and the building is used as the Foodbank distribution centre three times a week.

Linda said: “The church has played an important part in the history of Verwood and still is very much part of the community.

“It will be the bicentenary of the Sunday School this year and we are celebrating it at the harvest service on 27 September.

There will be an exhibition to mark the occasion and the cup will have pride of place.”

The Sunday School is still going strong but is now called Pilots with children aged six-10 meeting every other Sunday between 5-6.30pm.

‘The Woman In Black’ has been terrifying audiences for 25 years in London. At Lighthouse, Poole, local theatre-goers found out why - while being scared out of their wits REVIEW - By Liz Turner -

With just two actors on the stage telling the story, the play is a true homage to the art of creating tension and fear so that every last bang, loud noise and flickering of the lights has you jumping out of your seat.

This spine-chiller is not achieved through technical wizardry and special effects but through the suspense and menace built up during this master class in horror, skillfully delivered by Malcolm James as Arthur Kipps and Matt Connor as the Actor. Their telling of the tale of The Woman In Black leaves the audience gripped with terror and just waiting for the next blood chilling revelation. The feeling of dread and sense of malevolence which builds up means the gasps are audible when the next heart stopping moment comes.

And to top it all there is a wonderful twist at the end – one which makes you shudder again and leaves your nerves shredded.

After seeing this, I defy anyone to hear a knocking noise in the night without coming out in a cold sweat.

Over 7 million people have been enthralled by ‘The Woman in Black’ and many have been back to enjoy the thrills again. If you ever get the chance to experience the best in suspense and let your imagination take over. It’s a real treat and great fun.

or the 15th consecutive year, a vibrant and highly talented company of professionally trained musical theatre students, from Big Little Theatre School, will be returning in July to Bournemouth’s Pavilion Theatre with another toe-tapping collection of songs from some of the greatest shows of all time.

Broadway Showtunes features a company of over 150 young performers alongside a live orchestra, supported by some of the best creative and production talent in the business, bringing a taste of the great Broadway musicals to Bournemouth. The Showtunes series started as a show entitled Big Little Theatre School – In The Spotlight in 2001 and since then the ‘brand’ has evolved to provide over 800 students with wonderful performance opportunities witnessed by over 30,000 people.

The Sound of Musicals There’s a fantastic afternoon’s entertainment in store when popular professional theatre company Lyrics and Laughter returns to the Regent Centre in Christchurch for its ninth year. The lively new show ‘The Sounds of Musicals’, will take you back to all those well-loved musicals from the past and present. Enjoy wonderful show stopping melodies from great productions such as ‘Annie Get Your Gun’, ‘Half A Sixpence’, ‘The Sound Of Music’, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, ‘High Society’, ‘Chicago’, ‘Les Miserables’ and many more. Stunning costumes and comical parodies along the way means there should be something for everybody.

Mags4dorset and the Regent Centre have two tickets to give away for this fun show on 19 August at 2.30pm.

The exhibition ‘150 Years of Poole Lifeboat Station’ details the story of the lifeboat station’s history – its volunteer crew, rescues, lifeboats and kit. Lifeboats crewed by the people of Poole have been helping those in trouble at sea since 1865. The story is told through displays that cover award-winning rescues such as the lifeboat’s involvement with the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk during the Second World War, through to the modern-day lifeboat service in Poole. There will be over 150 objects on display, some of which have never been seen in public before. Exhibits include a fascinating range of the charity’s collection boxes spanning 150 years, models, paintings, medals, photographs, kit and mementos. From pulling and sailing lifeboats, to the familiar Tyne class and inshore B class

lifeboats of today, visitors can explore how the vessels have evolved over the past 150 years.

Archive footage and a new film will bring to life the moment of a launch and rescue.

Michael Spender, manager of Poole Museum, said: “The RNLI is such an important organisation for Poole and the Poole lifeboat station is the busiest coastal lifeboat station in the country. It’s fantastic that we can celebrate its admirable work for the people of Poole over the past 150 years at our museum.”

HIGH TECH CAMERAS Dorset Police has invested in some of the latest intelligent crime fighting camera technology with the purchase of a number of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras

E

ach has the capability of reading over 3,600 number plates an hour on vehicles travelling at speeds up to 100mph, day or night in all weather.

Scheduled to be installed over the next three to nine months at locations around the county, with approval from partner agencies and local authorities, they will assist Dorset Police in fighting crime by targeting criminals through their use of the roads.

Chief Inspector Bryan Duffy, of Dorset Police, said: “ANPR is a well-established tool for fighting crime, and encompasses the latest technology with smarter thinking to put Dorset Police at the forefront of investment in technology in order to maximise our resources.

“These cameras are not linked to speed enforcement, they are immovable and are locked down onto the road to simply read the number plates of passing vehicles, and not to show the occupants of those vehicles.

They will provide us with essential vehicle movement details on specific key arterial roads around the county,

helping us to target burglars, thieves, drug dealers, drug and drink drivers and cut crime.”

Dorset Police has confirmed is has used ANPR in many investigations and that data from existing cameras is being used to save lives and bring offenders to justice. ANPR data has so far been instrumental in helping find numerous missing people, providing key evidence in murder investigations, fail to stop and serious collisions, robberies and many other types of crime.

Dorset Police also says that access to the data from these cameras is strictly controlled within an encrypted server and is available only to a small number of authorised and trained officers. It is also said that records are kept for a maximum of two years and 99.9 per cent of the data is never looked at.

Alerts from vehicles of interest to the police are monitored within the Force Command Centre, where operators can assess each alert and allocate the appropriate resources to intercept the vehicle if required.

Blushing Brass Flushed with success Raising in excess of £3,000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, the recent Blushing Brass Charity Concert at the Verwood Hub was an outstanding success

ycling from John O’Groats to Lands End is a feat in itself, but to do it with only one leg is quite amazing and accounts for the three legs in this mammoth charity challenge.

Dorset-based comedy pianist Matt Black and his manager Jon Cox are well into their journey. Jon has only got one leg. He lost the other when he was four-years-old after he

was run over by a lorry. He got his first bike when he was seven and has ridden one ever since. He and Matt left John O’Groats on 4 May to start their mammoth bike ride for Wings for Warriors, which trains ex-forces amputees for a career in aviation.

As well as 3 legs, they have a piano following them in a support vehicle and Matt is performing gigs along the way to raise money.

Matt and Jon are aiming to raise £10,000 and not satisfied with just a bike ride, they have also produced a charity CD ‘Uncharted Territory’ to raise funds.

rganiser Jan Tiller, who plays the cornet in Verwood Concert Brass, was inspired by the nationally renowned all-female fund-raising brass band Boobs & Brass. Realising that Verwood Concert Brass has a significant number of women in the organisation, enough to form its own all-female fund raising band, she set up Blushing Brass.

For this year’s concert she hired Verwood Hub, which was decorated in cabaret style for the 200+ audience.

Jan said, “… we had Verwood’s very own fabulous Blushing Brass performing but I was delighted that the band that had inspired it all, Boobs & Brass, agreed to join us to perform a joint concert, with each band performing a wonderful and varied programme of music in each

half. And the finale piece with both bands on stage together, that’s over 70 players, was just awesome.”

The audience were entertained by both bands, and spellbound by the exceptional playing of the special guest soloist, one of the finest cornet players in the country, Kirsty Abbotts, principal cornet player for the Yorkshire Champions, the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band.

Jan concluded “I could not be more delighted with how the evening went. It was great having Boobs & Brass and Kirsty join us to make it an extra special concert. It does take a lot of organising but I have masses of help and support from so many people and the concert is so much fun to do. Ultimately though raising over £3,000 for a very worthwhile cause is the icing on the cake with the cherry on top too.”

Willow’s walkabout Ahead of Dementia Awareness Week (18-22 May), Colten Care welcomed a visit from the Donkey Sanctuary in Devon to two of their care homes to highlight the therapeutic effect of animal encounters for people with memory loss.

Willow, a 14-year-old miniature donkey, prompted smiles all round as he toured lounges and corridors in The Aldbury in Poole and Amberwood in Ferndown under the supervision of two Donkey Sanctuary representatives.

One of them, volunteer Wendy Small, said: “You can see recognition in people’s eyes. They remember donkey rides from years ago and it can be an emotional experience to see such a beautiful animal close up. People very much relate to it and it’s always worth coming if we can see we have reached someone emotionally.”
