LUXURY FASHION

IS IT POSSIBLE TO SUCCEED?

“A fashion house is not only a world of fantasy; above all, it is a business. It has to manage and keep accounts. Behind all the frills and furbelows are figures that talk.”

Christian Dior

The established book "Fashion Entrepreneurship," by Neri Karra emphasises the crucial blend of creativity and business awareness necessary for success in the fashion industry. She mentions that entrepreneurs must not only innovate their designs but also implement strategic business practices to thrive in this competitive market. Key capabilities include strategic thinking, effective management, and a deep understanding of market dynamics.

Coco Chanel is an excellent example of an entrepreneur who has successfully conquered the fashion industry, she is celebrated for her revolutionary approach to women’s fashion, characterised by simplicity, elegance, and comfort. She was specifically known for launching the iconic Chanel No. 5 perfume in 1921, one of history's most successful and enduring luxury fragrances. Chanel’s innovative designs and keen business sense helped her build a powerful global brand that continues to influence fashion today

Hazaar is revolutionising Uni life by offering students an affordable and eco-friendly marketplace. We sat down with the founder, Harriet Noy, to discuss the journey, challenges, and insights behind this innovative platform. Discover how Hazaar is helping students thrive with our exclusive Q&A.

“Harriet, What advice would you give to someone looking to start a small business?”

Never stop asking questions and always seek help. Growing your network is crucial for any business.

“Can you tell us about the research that informed Hazaar’s approach?”

The idea for Hazaar stemmed from my initiative to reduce plastic usage on campus and noticing frequent purchases of new items by fellow students. Initially, we launched as a Facebook marketplace, quickly growing with around 20,000 student participants. Continuous research and feedback from our student employees and users help refine our offerings to meet student needs and interests.

“What were some of the biggest challenges you faced?”

The biggest challenge was finding a viable business model. Initially, we used a commission-based model similar to Depop and Vinted, but it wasn't sufficient due to low activity in the early days. We partnered directly with universities, which has been more effective.

“Since you started Hazaar in your second year of university, do you find that relating closely to your audience is an effective marketing strategy?”

Absolutely, Our by students, for students approach is essential to our marketing…

Our ambassador program and digital content creators ensure we maintain a strong, relatable presence on campus. We employ students from various universities! This strengthens our connection with our audience and provides valuable work experience for the students. Additionally, students can sell their handmade products, offering them a space to showcase their talents.

Is hustling worth it?

Hustling is a form of ...

Making money, usually on the side of someone’s main career or even their main income altogether, but is it worth it?

work hard work fast never

This is the motto that many follow when it comes to creating their own business as it is known that it takes a lot of dedicated time and effort to succeed, and in the end, it may lead to increased wealth.

However, the dark reality of hustle culture is apparent, long work hours can lead to decreased mental and physical health and even social issues due to prolonged stress as the idea that every minute not spent working is a minute wasted creates an unhealthy obsession with productivity, leading individuals to neglect other important aspects of life.

But is it really about how many hours you put in, or is it about the quality of the work you produce?

Success may not be solely determined by relentless effort but by smart, strategic work.

So, is hustling worth it?

The answer may not be as straightforward as we’d hoped.

While there’s no denying the value of hard work and dedication, the key lies in finding a balance that allows you to pursue your goals without sacrificing your well-being.

Sustainable hustling involves setting clear boundaries by prioritising tasks aligning with long-term goals, and making time for rest.

Success isn’t just about what you achieve but how you achieve it.

LETS TALK

SOCIAL MEDIA AND SMALL BUSINESSES

Social media is used by 62.2% of the worlds population, although the most common use is sharing personal life and memories, it is now widely used by brands and the evolution of online marketing has changed so much. Brands take on a more personal approach when talking to their viewers, and they often posting things which encourage interaction. We can admit to pressing a brands Instagram poll without even thinking about it! As Gen Z, our lives are often consumed by social media, although brands now try to be inclusive and spread the right messages, it can also be a negative place for conflict, unrealistic standards and ‘scandals’, however, for a small business, companies can take advantage of the positives and use this to grow.

USING SOCIALS TO BECOME SOCIAL

REACHING CUSTOMERS

Social media is the best way for small businesses to find new customers and further their target audience. Lets talk about explore pages, for example TikTok, how many times have you seen a product on the FYP that you've liked and followed the brand or checked out their website? Thats the magic of algorithm. Its always great discovering a brand you didn't know existed through seeing one simple post.

PROMOTING PRODUCTS

Promoting products is the main thing small businesses can do, and the best part is in this generation there are so many cool and fun ways to do this. Brands posts tend to be more ‘down to earth’ now with videos of normal people using the products. This makes us feel like the brand is including us, which overall leads to more sales.

BEING DIFFERENT

The best way a small business can maximise their social medias is by being different, no one wants to see the same boring product posts on their timelines 20 times. Lets take Sol De Janeiro for example, their posts are bright which is on brand, eye catching but also informative. The ‘this would catch a lot of you’ post because is funny, and also true, and it would probably work on a lot of us...

BRAND IDENITY

Posting different things which represent the small business help with creating a brand identity as well as expressing the values of the company. It is easy to understand a brands vibe and aesthetic just by the visual look of their social medias.

OUR OPINIONS

Comments, likes and even shares tell a brand everything they need to know about how their customers feel. It’s easy to look in an Instagram comment section and know peoples and opinions, and nowadays, no one holds back! Not only this, but brands can ask their followers to comment how they feel, or them to take part in something fun and easy like a poll. This is not only engaging, but tells them what they need to know.

BEHIND ASOS’S ECOMERCE SUCCESS

KEEPING US SATISFIED

In recent years, asos have been working on making sure their shoppers are fully happy with their experience. In 2021 their retail impressions score doubled, showingtheircustomerserviceimprovement.

Lockdown meaning no one could physically try clothes on lead to asos gaining a huge increase of orders, the brands value for money rating also jumped massively during this time, which is surprising as companies such as shein which focus on amazingly low prices blew up aroundthesametime.

Yougov researched into asos’s secret to ecommerce success, and they found that even customers who have never shopped at asos are more likely to now, withtheirconsiderationscoreincreasingdramatically.

SO WHATS THE SECRET?

ASOS’s success comes from focusing on the basic needs of a business, and becoming very good at them. For example, prioritising customers, keeping up with trends and often offering the same products for cheaper than otherretailers.

Their website is easy to use, with a clear separation between the men’s and womenswear sites, their ‘trending’ section is an instant win, as the majority of asos customers are easily influenced by social media trends, we can all admit buying into something we have seen go viral on TikTok, right? Just by clicking the trending section, the first option is leopard print, so they have clearly done their research and knowwhateveryone’slookingfor.

In terms of the brands asos sells, there is an a-z list, soit’seasytofindexactlythebrandyouneed. They keep their website very ‘gen z’ with edits such as romantic era, reaching their target customerverywell.

WHATS NEXT FOR

After a £300 million full year loss in 2023, asos came up with a turnaround plan to bring itself ‘back into fashion’ by 2025, but how?

First steps:

Chief executive jose antonio ramos calamonte realised the business needs to primarily focus on profitability, so they started clearing old stock and he quoted they need to ‘move fasterineverythingwedo’.Afirststeptoreachingthisgoalwas creating the test and react model, which shortened suppliers design and production time to 2 weeks, meaning garments are being produced and created much quicker than before. This is in competition to fast fashion retailers such as shein, who have anincredibleturnover.

Customer relationships:

Pop-culture influence: from documentaries to new music to theatre, a nod to the days of disco is permeating the cultural zeitgeist.

Many key themes of disco focus on escapism, arising during times of economic and social change. In 2023, people are seeking a "mental break" through disco and embracing nightlife events.

Future of Fashion Education

The pace of change in fashion is placing a spotlight on the need for education that reflects the challenges and opportunities of the times

Strategies to double down on inclusion :

Adopt a vuja de mindset (seeing things with fresh perspectives) and create projects and initiatives that break down archaic systems and help young people learn to embrace people from all walks of life in fashion Fashion institutions must ensure their curriculums match the current needs of the market. Be the bridge for students to learn how to design for all people (sizes and abilities) to ensure they bring those skills to market

Brands must pay attention to vocational pre-college programmes as well. Look to the High School of Fashion Industries in New York, which, for the first time, held its senior showcase (which is an incubator of rising top talent in the city) in a public setting in Chelsea in May 2023 Brands can develop contests that incentivise participation and inspire new ways of working and designing that centre people on the fringes. Adopt hard-care strategies and crip time to ensure everyone feels included

The ASOS circular design collection

The Circular Economy

The circular economy offers an alternative to the traditional linear economy of take, make, and waste. In a circular economy, resources are used and circulated for as long as possible. This involves initiatives such as reuse, repair, remanufacture, and recycling.

Circular Design

The products in ASOS' Circular Design Collection are not considered "circular products." Instead, they are designed with specific circular design techniques in mind. It's important to note that these design techniques don't cover all aspects or parts of the product's lifecycle. As a result, they are not supported by a full lifecycle assessment.

To create the collection, ASOS defined eight bespoke design principles:

1. Zero-waste design: Using zero-waste design pattern cutting methods to ensure we’re using all the fabric in the most efficient way possible, so nothing goes to waste.

2. Minimised waste: Using design methods and manufacturing techniques that minimise waste.

3. Recycled input: Selecting materials with a recycled input to lower the impact of our materials and to drive uptake of recycled materials within the fashion industry

4. Durability: Selecting materials and using construction methods that will allow the product to endure wear and care, so you can love your products for longer.

5. Versatility: Designing products that can adapt to trends and purposes and can be styled in multiple ways.

6. Mono-material: Using the same recyclable material throughout the product. This means designing the product so that its main fabrications can be easily recycled when you’re done with it.

7. Disassembly: Designing products that can be easily taken apart at the end of their life, which makes it easier to reuse or recycle.

8. Upcycle: Using design techniques and product modifications to remanufacture and upcycle
