V O I C E S The Vanden Brul Pavilion, at the entrance of the Memorial Art Gallery, was constructed in 1985. Over time, rain water has penetrated the original 2,500- square-foot skylight causing damage to the architectural elements below. Engineering analysis indicates a complete replacement of the skylight is necessary. The skylight replacement project will involve the replacement of the existing three-bay skylight with a single skylight. A single skylight will create a larger volume of space for exhibiting artwork and also create a focal point of light visible from University Avenue. The scope of this project adds structural steel around the skylight perimeter, a new aluminum skylight frame, an attention-grabbing lighting system, and will repair the damaged soffits around the new skylight. The installation of new energy-efficient glass panels in the framework will reduce the amount of heat load within the space, which will reduce the utility costs to the MAG. The project has been awarded to The Pike Company, a local contractor. The time frame for this project is beginning in June 2019, to be completed by October 2019.

We’ll uncover which artist belonged to a clandestine gay bohemian circle, who can rock a bomb pair of heels, and what’s up with horses in queer representation. WRITTEN BY MARILYN ZAPF | exhibition JUROR As a craft curator and design historian, what stood out among the 877 works submitted for consideration to the 66th edition of the Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition was an interest and investment in materiality across creative disciplines. Some artists chose to realistically depict the material world, rendering in exquisite detail the glittering reflection of a glass ornament, the plump section of a peeled orange, or the gritty beauty of an industrial landscape. Others transformed their materials by manipulating watercolors, wood, clay, metal, and found materials into novel forms and representations. Still others chose to emphasize the material nature of their medium, creating elaborate surfaces, patterns, and abstractions that exploit the physical qualities of their chosen medium. Whether depicting, transforming, emphasizing, or inventing, the works selected for this exhibition are a celebration of the creative ingenuity rooted in Rochester and the Finger Lakes region. Thank you for the distinct honor to engage with such a broad and talented pool of artists! It proved to be a formidable yet rewarding challenge to narrow the many submissions down to a checklist reasonably scaled for the exhibition space. In the end I selected 75 works by 62 artists across a range of media—from painting and sculpture to fiber arts and furniture—that advance the legacy of technical mastery, ambitious creativity, and thoughtful content that is representative of the arts of this region. Aboutthejuror Marilyn Zapf is the Assistant Director and Curator at the Center for Craft, a national arts nonprofit headquartered in Asheville, North Carolina. She has curated a number of exhibitions including the nationally-traveling Michael Sherrill Retrospective (Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC, 2018,) as well as Made in WNC (Center for Craft, Asheville, NC, 2015) and Gee's Bend: From Quilts to Prints (Center for Craft, Asheville, NC, 2014). Marilyn is a trustee of the American Crafts Council, a program advisor for the MA in Critical and Historical Craft Studies program at Warren Wilson College, and has published articles and reviews in international publications, including Art Jewelry Forum and Crafts Magazine (UK). She holds a MA in the History of Design from the Royal College of Art and Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, and a BA (English Literature) and BFA (Jewelry and Metalworking) from the University of Georgia. Her areas of research include craft, postmodernism, and de/industrialization.

Nancy Curme has participated in the life of MAG since she first became involved in 1962. As a member of the docent class of 1979, she has given engaging tours of the collection to many of our visitors at all ages and stages of life for nearly 40 years. Nancy has also been an active member of the Gallery Council and a generous member of our Director’s Circle. While preparing to move away from Rochester this year to be closer to family, Nancy wanted to leave a lasting legacy at MAG to provide ongoing support for exhibitions. Nancy made this happen by naming the museum as a beneficiary of retirement assets.

CREATIVE WORKSHOP STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:
TIMOTHY ROSSITER Timothy Rossiter has been sketching since he was old enough to hold a pencil. While Timothy loves all animals, his favorite subjects are horses and dogs. In addition to his self-portrait with his horse Dakota, Timothy was also represented by a dual portrait – a painting of a dog and a horse - in the recent Student Show in the Creative Workshop’s Lucy Burne Gallery. Timothy has been taking classes in the CW since fall 2015 and has also tried his hand at pottery. His mother purchased an individual MAG membership for him in 2016 so that he could come and draw in the museum as often as he pleases. Timothy is part of an ever-growing group of artists that are inspired by MAG’s art classes and time spent in our rich collection. When he’s not at MAG, Timothy enjoys horseback riding, body building, singing, playing the guitar, reading for comprehension, golf, and bowling. He loves to draw bull mastiffs, and hopes to own one someday. His kindness toward all living creatures is truly an inspiration to all that know him.
