n the 1930s and early 1940s, Carl W. Peters—a Rochester artist known

primarily as a landscape painter—created 14 monumental murals for local landmarks. The murals were commissioned by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal to lift the country out of the Great Depression. Today, all but one of these “hidden treasures” survive in good condition, mostly in buildings of the Rochester City School District. This major exhibition organized by MAG explores the making of the Rochester murals through the artist’s rarely-seen original studies and sketches. It also tells the story of Peters’s close association with the Memorial Art Gallery, through director Gertrude Herdle Moore and her sister, longtime curator Isabel Herdle. In Rochester, Moore administered the WPA art program, while Herdle was on the program’s

committee. By 1937, their project was called “the most interesting and effective outside of New York City” by the regional director of the Federal Art Project.

The sisters were longtime champions of Peters, and this relationship would serve him well during the dark years of the Great Depression. He was awarded a coveted teaching position in MAG’s Creative Workshop and commissioned to paint scenes of local pride, peace and plenty for the WPA mural project. ABOVE: Carl W. MARCEL DZAMA: UNE DANSE DES BOUFFONS (A JESTER’S DANCE) December 10–January 24 in the Lockhart Gallery This 2013 film by Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is a fictionalized account of the ill-fated affair between Dada artist Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins. Rife with art historical references to the work of Duchamp, Francisco Goya, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys, among others, the 30-minute production is an exciting and often bizarre exploration of the surreal. MAG is one of four Rochester cultural institutions exhibiting work by Rick McKee Hock (1947–2015), a noted educator and longtime director of exhibitions and program design at George Eastman House. Hock was also a prolific artist whose work was featured at MAG in the 4th Rochester Biennial. The three works in this tribute take as their starting point the glut of visual information that bombards us daily. WEARABLE EXPRESSION RIT Jewelry Students Sale Event

This year’s M&T Bank Clothesline Festival was one for the record books. All weekend long the weather was cold, rainy and at times blustery—the worst since Hurricane Fran moved through the region in 1996. Thank you to the 12,500 hardy visitors—half the typical attendance—who came out to support MAG staff, volunteers and 400+ artists from every corner of New York state. Thanks also to the Democrat & Chronicle, City Newspaper, Freetime and Geva Theatre Center for their support. And finally, our deepest gratitude to all who responded to a rare appeal to help MAG make up a $55,000 shortfall.
