Whether this is your first time at Magnificat or you are a student, alumna, family member, or friend, we are so glad that you are joining us for Magnificat’s production of Mary Poppins. The cast, crew, and production team have poured countless hours into producing this vocally and technically challenging musical, and we hope you enjoy the fruits of their hard work and creativity. I am deeply grateful to the Magnificat performing arts team that is dedicated to providing our students with the guidance and opportunities to reach their full potential both on stage and behind the scenes. Whether they are starring in a leading role, designing the lighting and sound effects, or building the set, our students amaze us with their talent year after year. DIRECTOR’S NOTE The author P.L. Travers based her character of Mary Poppins on her Aunt Helen Morehead. We would all like an aunt like Mary Poppins with all her magical qualities. However, Mary Poppins firmly believes in good behavior and caring discipline for children and adults. Our story is spun by Bert, who is a skeever (someone who draws pictures on sidewalks for money) and a chimney sweep. He knows that all it takes is a spark, then something plain as a park becomes a wonderland! All you have to do is look anew and you will understand. Come on! It’s a jolly holiday with Mary!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS PAIGE ERICKSON ’22 Assistant Stage Manager, Build Crew Paige has been a backstage techie since day one. During her time at Magnificat, she has dedicated her heart and soul to the theatre. While she is happy to do anything backstage, she is especially passionate about lighting design and stage managing. Although she plans to study computer engineering in college, she also hopes to continue to work backstage whenever she can. Paige wants to thank Mr. Hnat, Mr. Van Niel, Mrs. Papa, and Steve Shack for being so incredibly supportive during her years at Magnificat. She has no idea what she would have done without them. She also wants to thank her beloved Chimney Sweeps (you know who you are) for truly being a second family to her. She wishes the cast and crew the best of luck during the shows and is so proud of all of them. They are truly practically perfect in every way.

CLARE FOX ’22 Katie Nanna, Valentine, Chimney Sweep, Ensemble, Dance Captain Clare is thrilled to be returning to the stage this year in Magnificat’s production of Mary Poppins. This is her fourth year participating in the musicals, and she’s loved every minute. Clare first took the stage as a Bobette in Footloose, went on to be Matilda’s understudy and Alice in Matilda, and earned the role of Serena in Legally Blonde. This program, along with the dance team, has taught her what it means to be an authentic performer and a genuine human being. It has allowed Clare to grow in ways she never knew she could. This would not have been possible without the help of Mrs. Haller, Mrs. Papa, Paige St. John, Mrs. Nagel, Mrs. Summers, and Mr. Van Niel. Clare is extremely grateful for the opportunities she’s been given and for the constant love and support from her parents.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS CLARE HOBAN ’22 Choreographer’s Assistant, Chimney Sweep, Doll, Ensemble Clare has been a part of Magnificat productions since freshman year and has enjoyed every second of them. This year, she is thrilled to be playing a doll, chimney sweep, and ensemble member in Mary Poppins. Additionally, Clare is on the varsity dance team and is very humbled to be the choreographer assistant for the show this year. Clare feels so blessed to have been a part of the Performing Arts Department for the past four years and to have met such an amazing community. She would like to thank Mrs. Haller, Mrs. Papa, Lauryn Papa, Paige St. John, and everyone else in the department who has continuously nurtured her love of performing. Most of all, Clare would like to thank her parents for their constant love and support. Clare will never forget all of the memories that she has on this stage and will cherish this incredible community forever.

AMELIA LAMB ’22 Mrs. Winifred Banks Mary Poppins will be Amelia’s sixth and final show at Magnificat. Her first show ever was Cinderella at Magnificat in sixth grade. Amelia continued to participate in Annie, Footloose, Matilda the Musical, Legally Blonde, and now Mary Poppins. She is thrilled to be playing the role of Winifred Banks and has taken the time to deep dive into the role and make it her own. Amelia will be pursuing a B.F.A. in musical theatre in college and is extremely excited to see where life takes her. As she continues throughout her performing arts career, she will be sure to make equity and inclusion a priority. She is extremely grateful for the Performing Arts Department, as it is what started her love and passion for musical theatre. Magnificat gave sixth grade Amelia “theatre fever,” and she has yet to recover. Amelia would also like to thank her family, friends, teachers, and coaches who have been there for her always. Amelia is excited to come back and watch the musicals in the future and wishes luck to all as they continue to amaze audiences with their talents, years on end.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS MADELYN LOW ’22 Miss Andrew, Ensemble Maddie is humbled and blessed to be performing as Miss Andrew in Mary Poppins. She has enjoyed the many Performing Arts opportunities during her time at Magnificat. Some of her favorite productions include Footloose (Bobbette #1), Matilda (Mrs. Phelps), Our Town (Josephine Stoddard), as well as Shakespeare Monologues, One Act, and performing with Table Tops in Show Choir. Maddie has tremendous gratitude to the entire Magnificat Performing Arts directorial team for giving her the opportunity to shine one more time on the Magnificat stage and for allowing her to share joy through musical theatre. She would like to thank her parents, sisters, and friends for their endless love and support. Maddie looks forward to pursuing English and vocal performance and hopes to return to Magnificat in the future as a high school teacher and Mr. Van Niel’s replacement upon retirement.

EVE MERTIC ’22 Miss Lark, Northbrook, Chimney Sweep, Ensemble Eve has enjoyed her time in the Magnificat Performing Arts Department. She was in the production of Matilda as well as this year’s Mary Poppins. Next fall, Eve hopes to attend Ohio State to study aerospace engineering. Music and the performing arts will always hold a special place in her heart, and she looks forward to seeing which productions come next.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS KAMERON RIGGS Mr. George Banks Kameron cannot wait to be back on stage at Magnificat! After two years of not being able to perform because of COVID, he is ecstatic to make a return to the stage as Mr. Banks! This is Kameron’s fourth year participating in Magnificat shows, and he is so happy to have made a family here. He says from the minute he walked in when he was a freshman, other Magnificat students welcomed him with open arms. There’s just something about Magnificat and the performing arts program that will always hold a special spot in Kameron’s heart. Kameron would like to give special thanks to the director, Maryann Nagle, for helping him grow not only as a person but as an actor and performer, as well as his parents for supporting him every step of the way! Kameron’s previous roles at Magnificat include Lyle in Footloose, Bruce in Matilda, and Warner in Legally Blonde. He hopes you enjoy the show!

SARAH ROGOZINSKI ’22 Costume, Hair and Make-up Crew, Dog Wrangler This is Sarah’s third show at Magnificat. She has participated in costumes, hair, make-up, and quick changes. She has also been the dog wrangler in Footloose, Matilda, and now Mary Poppins. Sarah is grateful for the friends she has made and the new opportunities she has been given as a result of Magnificat Performing Arts. She would like to thank Mrs. Papa and Lauryn Papa ’09 for always being beyond helpful and always putting a smile on her face. She would also like to thank her parents for their constant love and support and the opportunity to attend Magnificat. Sarah is going to miss the thrill of tech week and her little bestie, Cujo. Sarah is excited to see what her future has to offer.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS EVELYN SMITS ’22 Assistant Stage Manager, Build Crew Evelyn is so excited to be helping with another Magnificat production. She has worked on many productions with Magnificat including Sense and Sensibility (2019), student assistant, and Legally Blonde (2020), student assistant. She has worked on several productions outside of school including Mamma Mia and Newsies (Counterpoint Studios), assistant director and stage manager, and she also acted in some productions when she was younger. Outside of theatre, she is in many clubs, volunteers at Playhouse Square, is a National Honor Society member, and maintains a 3.9 GPA. Also, in her free time, she works on movie sets. She has worked on seven films and has won awards for some of them. She plans to go to college for a double major in film production and business. She would like to thank her family, friends, and God for their constant support.

THALIA TRUMP ’22 Costume, Hair, Make-up Crew, Backstage Crew Thalia has been a part of Magnificat theatre since the beginning of her freshman year. She has been cast in Our Town, Sense and Sensibility, and Swagger. She took part in the hair and makeup crew for Footloose and is currently in the hair and makeup and costume crew for Mary Poppins. Outside of theatre, Thalia plays the flute in the Magnificat band and is a member of the Shakespeare Club and show choir. Thalia plans to continue her love of music by pursuing a master’s degree in music therapy for kids and teenagers with mental and physical disabilities, and she hopes to go back for a bachelor’s in post production in editing. Thalia is incredibly thankful for the Magnificat performing arts faculty and staff as well as the students involved in all the various programs for providing her with such fond memories she will carry with her for the rest of her life.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS EMMA VAN NIEL ’22 Costumes, Hair, Make-up Crew, Backstage Crew Emma has been part of the costume crew since freshman year. She has worked on Footloose, Our Town, Matilda, Sense and Sensibility, and now Mary Poppins as part of the costume, hair, and make-up crews. Outside of the costume crew, she has worked on personal outfits and costumes from different shows and genres that she enjoys. She is very grateful for all of the experiences that she has gained through all the shows she has worked on and will use the skills she gained throughout her life.

SENSORY-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES During their junior theology course, every Magnificat student is tasked with completing an Agape Experiment. The Agape Experiment invites students to pursue a passion project with the goal of making the world more loving and just. The Greek word agapē refers to the unconditional, self-giving love of God that Christians are called to emulate as disciples of Jesus in society. For her Agape Experiment, Gwen Wojtkun ’20 proposed that the Magnificat Performing Arts Department start to incorporate “sensoryfriendly” performances into their seasonal productions in order to be more inclusive of people living with disabilities. Matilda, the Musical was the first Magnificat Performing Arts program run to include a special sensory-friendly performance, and the Department plans to continue offering this opportunity in the coming years. Sensory-friendly performances at Magnificat are designed especially for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, sensory sensitivities, or other disabilities. During these programs, patrons enjoy shows together with family and friends in welcoming, inclusive, and relaxed spaces. Magnificat will provide environmental modifications intended to make the experience of traveling to and viewing a performance more pleasant for everyone. Trained volunteers will also be on hand to assist patrons if necessary. We welcome family and friends to experience the show together in a judgement-free environment. Thank you to Gwen for starting this important initiative within the Magnificat Performing Arts Department!

PRODUCTION TEAM CHARLES EVERSOLE | Music Director, Conductor

Charles is thrilled to be working with the cast, crew, orchestra, and staff of Mary Poppins. A native of Richmond Heights, Charles holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Baldwin-Wallace University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan. For 16 years, he was the Artistic Director of The Singing Angels, and he has also taught locally at Cuyahoga Community College and currently as director of the Lakeland Civic Chorus. Charles has conducted over 50 musical theatre productions locally, in New York City, and across the United States and Canada, including the national tours of The Who’s Tommy and A Grand Night for Singing. He has taught in NYC at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where his students include Tony-nominated actor Christopher Jackson (Hamilton) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family). He has also been a private vocal instructor and coach for over 30 years.

JILL HALLER | Choreographer, Director of Dance

Jill Haller is the director of dance at Magnificat. Jill designed and originated Magnificat’s college-preparatory dance program thirteen years ago. She has designed dance curriculum for three institutions and is recognized as a leader in dance education across the nation because of her outstanding direction within these programs. Jill is a current United States All-Star Federation adjudicator for the prestigious Dance Worlds, as well as a contributor for the Dance Education Board and Coaches Credentialing Program with USASF. She also regularly serves as a competition educator and adjudicator for National Dance Alliance, Universal Dance Association, Groove Experience, and various other dance competition companies. Jill is originally from southern California, and she received her B.A. in theatre and choreography from Concordia University. She has choreographed over 50 professional and preprofessional musicals, including work with dance and musical outreach programs in Los Angeles and various Disney affiliates. Jill never dreamed that God would lead her where He has in this industry, and she feels incredibly blessed to do His great work through dance.

JOSEPH HNAT | Technical Director

Joe is a “fifth year senior” here at Magnificat, though he has been on staff at many local professional, semi-professional, and high school venues. With this production of Mary Poppins, he is happy to have realized the construction of scenery that was collaboratively designed by him and five Magnificat students, a process several years in the making. We hope you enjoy allowing yourself to be transported to 1910 England with us.

PRODUCTION TEAM BRITTANY MERENDA | Projection Designer

Brittany is a projection designer, production designer, and creative director working in theatre, opera, and dance throughout the country. Brittany just returned from her debut at The Washington National Opera’s Come Home Gala at The Kennedy Center as the associate projection designer. At the onset of the pandemic, Brittany pivoted to fully virtual productions including a real-time, six live camera feed interactive play titled Deja Zoom! with Parallel 45 Theatre. She also served as the creative director for a state-of-the-art virtual national convention (summer 2020) and virtual/live gala for New England Conservatory. Opera productions include The Light In The Piazza (Columbus State University), La Boheme, Barber of Seville, and Madama Butterfly (Cleveland Opera Theatre), La Finta Giardiniera and The Marriage of Figaro (University of Tennessee Opera Theatre), Glory Denied and Dialogues of the Carmelites (Baldwin Wallace Conservatory), Little Women and Alcina (Hawaii Performing Arts Festival), Verdi’s Macbeth (Opera Tampa), Carmen, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (The Lakes Area Music Festival), and Tosca (Opera Grand Rapids). Previous theatrical works include Sincerely, Oscar (offBroadway), Shrek The Musical with Beck Center for the Arts (Cleveland), Howie D: Back in the Day, Elf The Musical, Newsies, and The Little Mermaid at The Rose Theater (Omaha), Sweeney Todd with Hawaii Performing Arts Festival and Oklahoma! at The Wick (Boca Raton). She has also designed Appalachian Spring (St. Paul Ballet) and Nutcracker in Wonderland (Ballet Co.Laboratory). Brittany received her Master of Arts in digital arts and sciences from the University of Florida and received a Barbizon Award for her projection design.

MARYANN NAGEL | Director

Maryann Nagel is a full-time professional actor working across the country on stage and in film, radio, and TV. Currently she can be seen in the films The Beach House, False Gods, The Russian Bride, The Assassin’s Code, My Friend Dahmer, My Blind Brother, Finding Love in Valentine, Old Fashioned, Into the Storm, Take Shelter, The Yank, The Umbrella Man, Clown Town, Welcome to Collinwood, Dinner in America, and more. Maryann has worked alongside Hal Holbrook, George Clooney, Jessica Chastain, Adam Scott, Jennie Slate, Nick Krol, Sam Rockwell, Fred Willard, Corbin Bernsen, Ross Lynch, and others. While living in Los Angeles, Maryann worked in episodic series. She is a voice actor for many Fortune 500 companies. She worked for The Cleveland Orchestra as a narrator for 27 years. Currently she works for Disney Musicals in Schools, teaches acting, produces events, and directs theatrical shows.

PRODUCTION TEAM MARY CACHAT PAPA ’79 | Costume Designer, Performing Arts Program Coordinator

Mary began costuming in 1994 with The Wizard of Oz, when her daughter decided to start acting. She never would have thought a B.F.A. in photography and graphic design would turn into a career in costuming. Mary has worked on costumes for Beck Center for the Arts, French Creek, St. Edward High School, IX Christmas Connection, and, for the last 16 years, Magnificat, as well as many corporate events. Mary enjoys working with the students, teaching, and sharing her joy of costume design and art. During Mary’s 20+ years designing costumes, her favorite shows include Alice in Wonderland, Children of Eden, and CATS. Mary would like to thank her family, especially her husband, for all their support.

JOHN RUSSELL | Sound Designer

John Russell is a recent graduate of Baldwin Wallace University and is currently a sound designer and theatre technician based out of the Cleveland/Akron area. He has worked numerous shows at Beck Center for the Arts, including Once, The Scottsboro Boys, Hair, and An Act of God. He also designed sound for several plays while at Baldwin Wallace University, including ROCK N ROLL, Marisol, and Weimar. In 2018-2019, he spent two summers as the sound apprentice at Maine State Music Theatre in Brunswick, Maine. Most recently, he mixed The Lighting Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at the Hathaway Brown Theatre Institute.

STEVE SHACK | Lighting Designer

Steve Shack is a nomadic lighting designer whose most recent work has been seen in Hilo, Boston, Traverse City, Cleveland, and New York City. Over the past nineteen years, he has lit over 200 productions of musical theatre, opera, dance, and drama in addition to a few restaurants and museums. Steve is the resident lighting designer at Cleveland Opera Theater, Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, and Magnificat High School. During the summer, he teaches and designs lighting at French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts. When not in the theatre, he prefers to body surf in the Pacific Ocean. Steve is looking forward to his return to Magnificat in April to design The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

PRODUCTION TEAM PAIGE ST. JOHN ’15 | Assistant Choreographer

Paige holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance from The Ohio State University (2019) and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in dance education from the University of Northern Colorado. At Magnificat, she is one of the Dance Team coaches and program coordinator of the Magnificat Dance Training Company. Paige teaches at various dance studios in the area, including Baldwin Wallace Community Arts School. She performs and trains professionally with Cleveland Dance Project Company, dancing her first season with the company this year. On the weekends, Paige can be found choreographing, educating coaches, and teaching dance athletes across the country and across the globe. As of this past year, she has taught dance in five out of the seven continents, and her work continues to take her on new and surprising adventures with each dance season. Paige is thankful to be a part of the magic of Mary Poppins, taking her back to her own roots in Magnificat’s Performing Arts Program (Class of ’15).

DALE VAN NIEL | Director of Performing Arts

Dale Van Niel is blessed to have been working with such a dedicated team of artists and educators at Magnificat High School for the past 8 years. He holds a Bachelor of Art in theatre from Kent State University. He began his professional career as an actor but eventually found it more rewarding backstage. Dale has worked for more than 25 years in the Cleveland theatre community as a stage manager at The Cleveland Opera, Cleveland Public Theatre, and Playhouse Square; as company manager and production manager at Great Lakes Theater Festival; as operations manager at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights; and as assistant to the director at Orange Community Education and Recreation. He wishes to thank his biggest fans—Lucas, Nate, Jack, Katie, Sammy, and Rose—for their undying support and sends his love to his true companion in all things, Caitlin. Col. 3:23
