LETTER

Fall 2017 s my years at Magnificat have unfolded, from student, to teacher of theology and Dangers of Indifference, to Director of Campus Ministry, to Dean of Student Life and Formation, to this moment, the spirit of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary has been an inspiration. Whether mentors or colleagues, they have brought a passion for educating young women to be leaders for church and world. Their history early on presented challenges such as traversing the ocean as immigrants to an unknown land, establishing an orphanage and school for girls, and turning swampland into an organic farm. Throughout all, the sisters have manifested a deep faith and a genuine humility complemented by innovative problem-solving.

That HM spirit imbues Magnificat’s Mission and environment. This Mission has touched innumerable families throughout the 62 years of our heritage including my own. The 12,151 alumnae and their families have reflected the prophetic promise of Mary’s Magnificat: “All generations will call me blessed.” We look forward in a special way to the return of the Anniversary classes for the Alumnae Reunion on September 16th.

This heritage touches our students today including the Freshman Class of 2021. Our expansive curricular and co-curricular programs prepare each girl personally for success in college and life. Our educational environment promotes academic excellence and a love of learning. Our Mission contours the entire experience for our young women in a context of values and faith-formation that permeates their holistic education.

Flowing from this rich heritage, our dedicated faculty and staff immerse our students in dynamic learning. This range of experiences calls forth their gifts and talents, sparks their imaginations, builds their confidence and hones their skills for life-long learning in service to church and world.

With the initiative and support of our Board of Directors, plans are underway to enhance our physical spaces in ways that will forward our academic and co-curricular programs to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world. You will see this in the pages to follow, starting with the feature on the Karnatz Family Field. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of all who have brought us to this moment, and to those who partner with us as we continue to design environments that promote the highest levels of learning.

Magnificat is truly a community of effective caring for each student in an environment that bespeaks the heart of the school name and prayer, the Magnificat. In the tradition of all generations, joy and praise flow from the grateful hearts and courageous spirits of our students and everyone in the Magnificat community.

MOIRA CLARK '77

With the approval of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, the Board of Directors of Magnificat High School announced that Moira Clark '77 has been appointed to serve as the school's sixth president.

Mrs. Clark, a 1977 graduate of Magnificat High School, went on to Xavier University ’81, where she received her Master’s in Religious Studies from John Carroll University. She joined the faculty of Magnificat in 1994 as a theology teacher, later serving as director of campus ministry and, most recently, as dean of student life and formation. In this position, she managed all facets of the department of student life, overseeing admissions, athletics, campus ministry, counseling, student life and summer programs.

Mrs. Clark serves as a member of the school’s leadership team. As president, she will be responsible for implementing the school’s strategic plan, directing advancement and alumnae initiatives, and overseeing marketing and admissions campaigns. She is the school’s third lay leader in its 62-year history.

Magnificat is a truly special place, where we all work together to bring the Mission to life by creating an educational environment for our students that is faith-filled, loving and respectful. MAGNIFICAT HIGH SCHOOL BEGINS PHASE II CONSTRUCTION OF ON-CAMPUS ATHLETIC COMPLEX Phase II construction of Magnificat’s first on-campus synthetic turf field is underway at the corner of Hilliard and Wagar. Currently, Magnificat’s campus houses a practice gym, a varsity gym, Coyne Tennis Courts, a track and field area and a practice field for outdoor athletics. With the continued success of our athletic programs and as part of a larger commitment to holistic education, Magnificat recognizes the opportunity to create a more attractive and competitive environment for student athletes as well as all students. This complex, now to include the Karnatz Family Field, will benefit all outdoor athletic programs.

The field project will encompass many improvements to Magnificat’s campus, including resurfaced track and renovated field event areas, an adventure learning course and a synthetic turf field. These components will complement the newly renovated Coyne Tennis Courts.

"As part of the growing demand and the continued success of our athletes, we find it absolutely necessary that our facilities match these strengths. Not only will our athletes have much improved practice conditions, but they will now have home field advantage. We are thrilled that we can now offer, to our students and families, not only the convenience of on-site practices and home games, but also the pride in playing at home!” Moira Clark ’77, President.

We owe a great deal of gratitude to our generous donors. To date, we have raised $1.1 million for Phase I (Coyne Courts) and Phase II (Karnatz Family Field). The project will become public as we enter into Phase III. Much community support has been received, and we look forward to continuing improvements in our Rocky River home base!

A record number of more than 650 guests joined us for the 28th Annual Magnificat Gala, The Blue & White Ball, held at the historic Huntington Bank Building in downtown Cleveland. At the event, Magnificat was proud to honor Megan Engle McNamara ’87 with the Alumnae Award of Excellence and P. Kelly Tompkins with the Magnificat Award. would like to welcome all of our students and all families, both returning and new, to Magnificat High School for the 2017-2018 school year! With our new President, Moira Clark ’77 at the helm, I am confident that the students will have a faith-filled, exciting and energizing year. Moira is a mission-centered leader who brings a wealth of talents and years of experience in academics and student life at Magnificat to all of our young women. The new school year also brings new leadership to the Board.

The new Chair of the Board is Colleen Moran O’Neil ’88, with whom I have had the pleasure of working on the Board. Colleen is a dedicated alumna and Board member, and I know she will work well with Moira and her team, bringing new energy to the task. In addition, the new Vice Chair of the Board is Linda Loesch Kelly, CFN ’77. Linda has been instrumental over the last two years in leading the Investment Committee of the Board as well as serving on the Finance Committee. Colleen and Linda are joined by three other officers: Secretary, Fiona Campbell Chambers ’90, Treasurer, Andy Strada, and Second Vice Chair, Sister Carole Anne Griswold, H.M. New board members include Brian Sinchak and Heather Lambert Keohane ’89. I look forward to watching the Strategic Plan continue to unfold and participating in the success of our new President and her team. Please join me in supporting the school by attending a game, play, or fundraiser and by making a gift to the the Annual Fund if you have not done so already. COLLEEN MORAN O’NEIL '88 Colleen Moran O’Neil '88, has served on the Board since 2014. During her time on the Board, Colleen has served on various committees including co-chair of the Governance Committee in 2016-2017. Colleen is a litigation partner with Calfee, Halter & Griswold, LLP, who assists clients with preventing and resolving disputes throughout the United States. Colleen serves on the firm’s Practice Planning & Growth Committee and is the co-chair of its Diversity Committee. She also serves on the Advisory Board of Metro Catholic School, is the Vice President of the IrishAmerican Law Society of Cleveland and serves on the board of the Cleveland Marshall Law Alumni Association. Colleen and her husband Mike reside in Avon with their three children.

STUDENT ACADEMIC AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS THE ARTS Magnificat’s fall musical, Annie, won Best Ensemble/Chorus and Best Choreography Execution at the 2017 Dazzle Awards held in the spring.

The 2017 Fall Musical will be CATS! w Elizabeth Chavez '18 won first place in “The Cost of the Dragon” poster contest by the FBI. w "This Light of Ours" photo contest by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage - Mary Farnan '18 won first place.

- Alexis Kuennen '17 and Shannon McIntyre '17 tied for third place.

- Gabby Weist '18 and Reagan Hintz '18 were awarded honorable mention.

BUSINESS Reagan Hardy '17 won $1,000 in the Magnificat Business Plan Competition for "Babysitter in a Box". The competition was against five other young entrepreneurs who presented in front of three judges--also entrepreneurs.

Reagan then competed in the competition at CWRU against 15 other schools and placed second overall. She won $800 for her business plan presentation.

LEARN, LEAD, SERVE w Emma Becker ’18 received a perfect score of 36 on her ACT. w Hannah Keating ’17 received a “Student of the Year” award/scholarship from the Leukemia Lymphoma Society for her fundraising efforts. w Elizabeth Martinez ’18 and her sister Annie ’10 hosted another successful “Be the Match” donor drive. A record number of students registered to be donors. w Molly McNamara ’19 was featured on Cleveland.com for helping to raise $100,000 to fight malaria in Africa. w Maria Nettgen '18 completed a very selective summer program at Stanford University. She spent three weeks living on Stanford's campus as part of their Pre-Collegiate Studies Program. Of the 4,000 applicants, 700 were accepted! She focused on Biomechanics and Biofluid Dynamics.

ATHLETICS ROWING w The inaugural season of Magnificat Rowing finished on a high note as the Blue Streak 1st Novice 8+ took 2nd place to New Trier (IL), one of the top teams in the country, by .25s at the Midwest Championships in Zanesville, Ohio in May. TRACK & FIELD w Adelaide Aquilla '17 set a new OHSAA Division I Amherst Steele District Meet record as well as a new Magnificat school record in the Shot Put with a throw of 45' 4" on May 17. Adelaide qualified to go on to the State Meet in the discus.

SWIMMING w The 2016-2017 Magnificat Swim Team had All American athletes who placed in the top 100 in the country. w A huge congratulations goes out to our All American Swimmers from last season. The Medley Relay team of Taryn Zwissler '17, Kathryn Presley '18, Alana Cartwright '17 and Grace Monroe '18 finished 95th in the country earning All American status. Alana Cartwright finished 89th in the 100 Breaststroke earning All American status, and Taryn Zwissler finished 90th in the 100 Backstroke earning All American status. w The entire team also earned the Gold All American academic status with a team grade point average of 3.76. This is the highest honor given out to teams with high grade point averages throughout the entire country.

ANOTHER SUMMER AT MAGNIFICAMP HAS FLOWN BY! MagnifiCamp allows the idea of boarding a train to Hogwarts to go from make-believe to reality, where children find a world filled with possibilities and imagination.

Campers experience a place that creates happy memories and encourages self-expression. At MagnifiCamp they perfect their game, create 3D Chalk-Art, learn how to make a robot, and discover just how much fun math can really be.

We hope that these memories will stay with them forever and that they recall them when they walk through our doors on their first day of high school.

Over the eight weeks of Magnificamp, we welcomed almost 800 campers to our campus.

We hope to see you next summer!

Magnificat Anima Mea Dominum My Soul Magnifies the Lord

OUR SISTERS OF THE HUMILITY OF MARY Sister Claire Young, H.M., former Physical Education teacher, debate coach and Principal at Magnificat (1967-1971) Sister Claire begins each morning at the Villa with a special ministry of praying for her beloved Magnificat. She remembers a time before the original gymnasium was built and holding her P.E. classes in the cafeteria. No room for basketball or volleyball, so each student learned to square dance instead!

While at Magnificat, Sister Claire organized a heptathlon, a series of seven outdoor events that included, races, long jumps and high jumps. She recalls the colorful scene of a thousand girls in gym suits in their class colors. In hopes of being all-inclusive, some of the girls, who indicated they might not be able to participate in the more rigorous events, were designated her “official helpers.” In retrospect, she thinks they may have worked harder than everyone else.

Words of Wisdom from Sister Claire Sister Claire continues to stay active and believes in staying fit at any age. Her advice for keeping fit: “Don’t park too close to the door. Give yourself some extra steps! Also, do daily wakeup excercises.”

Sister’s wishes for our students to have happy times at Magnificat.

She hopes that each student lives the values and ideals they have learned and practiced daily. She also hopes their hearts are appreciative of all they receive from Magnificat.

Sister Claire loves walking the Villa grounds past the shrines and the lake to the cemetery. She remembers the sisters buried there and their contributions to making a better world. She hopes that she has been doing the same.

FALL 2017 /// class notes CLASS OF 1971 In June 2017, The Honorable Patricia Gaughan was sworn in as chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Patricia was confirmed to the federal court in December 1995.

CLASS OF 1992 Maureen McCafferty Stanton is Program Manager for The Orange Effect Foundation, which provides funding for children and young adults with speech disorders to secure therapy, technology and other resources they need to communicate more effectively. CLASS OF 1996 (8) Kate Conway, ’96 MD, MPH and her team of researchers at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio, were awarded a grant to support a project focused on better understanding the health needs of Ohio’s refugee populations. Kate earned her medical degree from the Boonshoft School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health from University Hospitals Case Medical Center where she focused her studies on global health and undeserved populations. Kate is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Director of Medical Education at the Boonshoft School of Medicine.

CLASS OF 1997 (9) Christine Chevalier ’97, an electrical engineer for the Analex Corporation at NASA Glenn Research Center, hosted several Magnificat students for Genesis in May 2017. CLASS OF 1998 Sarah Malenich was recently promoted to Director of Marketing and Sales at Safe Quality Food Institute in Washington, DC. CLASS OF 2005 Kate Szabolcs is the Design Director for Dallaswear and Waitressville Uniforms. Kate runs the teams which design custom uniforms for NBA, NFL and other pro-team cheerleaders and dancers (Dallaswear brand) and custom uniforms for large iconic chains and wholesale uniforms for the bar, restaurant, service and nightclub industry (Waitressville brand).

Previously, she worked as a designer with JCPenney for several years.

CLASS OF 2009 Grace Willkomm will graduate in August with a Bachelor Degree in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati's Accelerated Pathways program. Prior to attending University of Cincinnati, Grace earned a Bachelor Degree in Biology from the University of Dayton.

CLASS OF 2012 Sarah Dewar graduated from the Colorado School of the Mines in May 2016 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and in the fall, she’ll begin working toward a Juris Doctorate degree at University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Giulia Di Cenzo graduated with a Bachelor Degree from Ohio University in December 2015 and is starting her second year of law school at ClevelandMarshall College of Law. CLASS OF 2013 Colleen Carroll graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in Nursing. Colleen was honored in March as one of 18 seniors selected for the Billiken Award, which is given to those who excel in academics, leadership, community service, commitment to the university and its mission after graduation.

(7) Liz Todia graduated with honors from University of Dayton with a Bachelor Degree in Entrepreneurship and Finance. She was chosen by faculty to receive the prestigious Wall Street Journal Award for General Management, which is given to the graduating senior majoring in Leadership, International Business Management or Entrepreneurship considered to have the greatest potential for general management responsibilities.

Bridget Visconti graduated in May from The Catholic University of America with a degree in International Politics. She now works in the White House for United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

CLASS OF 2015 Nichole Slater, an industrial and operations engineering student at the University of Michigan, spent the winter semester in Europe, studying at the University of Manchester. Her summer was spent in Houston, Texas as an intern for Schlumberger, the world's leading provider of technology for drilling and processing for the oil and gas industry.
