Meet

Lebogang Moabi aka ArtRon-Onee

Embark on a journey into the vibrant world of Lebogang Moabi, a South African artist whose deep connection to nature and unwavering dedication to his craft have shaped his remarkable artistic odyssey. From Jouberton, North West province, Lebogang's unique blend of organic materials and scientific elements creates thought-provoking works that transcend boundaries, inviting viewers to explore the beauty of the natural world and the boundless potential of human expression with each stroke of his brush

Lebogang, who is from Jouberton, knew from within that he is an artist He noticed the gift from a young age There was that significant moment when his first work was bought, which cemented and encouraged him to pursue art as a career He draws his inspiration from the natural world and daily realities When we asked him which institutions have been supporting him on his journey, he mentioned the Department of Arts, Sports, Culture, and Recreation (North West) and The B Gallery What Lebogang enjoys about being an artist is the freedom that comes with creativity However, he clarified that the industry has its own set of challenges The most difficult ones include keeping his head afloat in a saturated market, inconsistency of sales, and the price increase of materials To overcome them, he has learned to count his blessings and has formed a strategy to market his work to the right clientele

"I'm deeply connected to my work," Lebogang said He breaks down his process based on inspiration, thoughts, and execution In most cases, it just happens organically and leads him to a final product "I love exploring nature and collecting natural materials I also like to travel to new places, even if it's just a walk; it helps me look around for new ideas," said Lebogang when asked about inspirations

Lebogang is a self-taught artist He told us his first experience on a big platform was when he was part of a group show by The B Gallery in 2018 His exhibition made it to the Klerksdorp Record, which was an out-of-this-world experience for him

Meeting Jakes Mbele, the "low-key goat," working alongside him in 2019, shaped his view of the arts He learned so much in a short space of time, since Jakes is the one who influenced the Painting Matlosana Gold campaign Most importantly, Lebogang learned the do's and don'ts of the industry

"I'm an expressionist through my work I express my inner thoughts, my inner world, my discoveries, and explorations," that's his signature style When asked what sets him apart, he answered, "Through my explorations with organic materials, I discovered interesting natural formations and materials that I incorporate in my work With every piece that I craft, I weave together the natural and scientific elements to produce works that are thought-provoking, unique, and fresh to the eye "

Lebogang has a few milestones in the bag, but the most prominent ones are when he was unexpectedly called for an interview by SABC News at the Mahikeng Art Fair in 2021, and when his work was chosen by "Sabaa Education" in Germany for an online exhibition during COVID-19 in 2021 Some of his memorable moments include doing a live painting in front of a crowd at Matlosana Mall during Art Attack art fair organized by The B Gallery

When it comes to trends, he understands that they are meant to be followed, and if done the right way, they can impact one positively However, he would rather like to set his own trends so that he can be able to control what goes and what comes To stay informed as a contemporary artist, he believes in the power of information, so he equips himself with relevant tools, uses social media, does research of his industry, and most importantly, attends art events and gallery openings

His aspiration is to see the Lebogang Moabi brand become a household name, set a different tone in the art industry, and lastly, to share the love and the beauty of art with the world Lebogang is planning a solo exhibition to celebrate his artistic journey He is hoping to do it late 2024 or early next year

MUSIC

TITUSMONGAMELI

Titus started his musical journey in Kanana four years ago, and how it began was the funniest moment he's ever had He didn't know that he would be this good at this moment in time because music was something he never thought of when he was growing up

He started making music in 2020 when his friend "Katlego Maine" took him to the studio for the first time, and he went there to try out some things He did not know what to do when they arrived Titus wants to give a big shout out to "614CK 541NT" for allowing him into his studio with a warm heart as hits were made in that studio

Titus became an artist because his view is there's a lot of money in the music industry, and he believes that music is something that speaks to people in different ways due to the various sounds which heal, bring happiness, bring memories of the good and bad times He also wants to see himself on television one day so that he can be an inspiration to the ones looking up to him

Titus really enjoys being on big stages with famous artists at the backstage because it motivates him to keep pushing

When on stage, he feels like a president giving a national address to people, and that is the reason his stage name is "Mongameli," which means President when translated to English

When not on stage, he also enjoys studio sessions because a lot of creativity emerges due to the type of sound coming from the speakers he sees in the studio, the beats he hears from them, and the mic waiting for him to record a hit song Everything he sees in the studio is musical

On 30 September 2023, he performed at a big platform for the first time, "The Street Festival " He used to attend the event each year as a child, watching established artists perform on stage, not knowing that one day people would be watching him perform on that same stage

Before he got on stage, he was so nervous as people were waiting for him to perform To overcome it, he kept telling himself, "I'm going to kill the show " Indeed, people felt he had a great performance at the Street Festival.

Some of the challenges that Titus has noticed are firstly financial stability being hard to achieve

Costs associated with recording, production, promotion, and touring can sometimes outweigh earnings, leading to a difficult financial situation Earning a sustainable income can take years of hard work and persistence

Secondly, the unpredictable nature of success in the music industry is a challenge It demands a likeable personality, a multifaceted skill set, and a commitment to continuous learning Success in this industry is notoriously unpredictable, often depending on a mix of talent, timing, market trends, and luck Even immensely talented artists may struggle to gain recognition, and success can be short-lived

Thirdly, substances for success can sometimes be a temptation Deals that involve drugs with huge money can arise, making it essential to pray and ask for wisdom and divine protection

To overcome these challenges, Titus employs several strategies He keeps watch of his weak and strong points and knows what's best for him in the industry He makes good choices to achieve the success he desires To stay relevant, he practices, innovates, and keeps going over the basics until they become second nature To stand out, he dedicates time to refine his skills, whether it's through consistent practice, seeking mentorship, or attending music workshops These efforts result in breathtaking, memorable live performances

So he doesn't shy away from investing in creating high-quality recordings, mixes, and masters wherever that's possible

Do's:

- When on stage, always pay attention and look up

- Take rehearsals seriously

- Listen to lots of music and always try something new

Don'ts:

- Don't give anyone your projects that don't have copyright

- Don't just turn up to play or perform or forget equipment needed for gigs

- Don't forget what you've rehearsed

- Don't overdo/underdo

- Don't forget to stream, share and download my latest release titled Wozani Nonke feat Kukzer Wadi Piano, Angie Da Babe, Uncle Kallow & Hlisa on all streaming platforms

Tips:

- Be a great role model

- Learn a new instrument.

- Attend musical performances together

- Show interest in your musical pursuits

- Praise yourself for your hard work before anyone can do it for you

Final Thought:

"In the next coming 5 years, I'll be the greatest in the world, but for now, I'm the biggest thing in my town and I'll keep elevating I also wish the best journeys to other upcoming musicians and may you succeed in this tough industry I love you all God bless you all."

#TIKIBALL

TOURNAMENT

The whole idea of the Tikiball Tournament began on random Monday (20 March 2023) when a hashtag #Happymajitamonday on Facebook was making its rounds Alongside that hashtag, we suggested playin tikiball, inviting diski lovers to join in

Later that day, six teams gathered to play The stree were bustling with people, and the sound of the ball hitting the dustbin filled the air with happiness Immediately after that event, we were approached to host another diski day Raven & Kgotso then discuss when the next one would be. As we were discussing Max Setlhogome and Dunca Brown gave us the organizing a Tikiball tournament, for which we ar grateful to this day

We introduced the idea to people through social and the response was impressive We then formu the format for it, as it's unusual for Tikiball to be expanded into a tournament

set for the 24th of June 2023 On that rs and players flocked to the streets in dn't anticipate, and it became a y We were warming up more and more hosting multiple Tikiball Tournaments as r it was growing With the increasing higher expectations, so we had to ospitality for both the players and the e wanted to ensure the environment nd spacious enough to accommodate

Our objective is to rebrand and introduce a new platform for Tikiball to everyone without diverting away from its cultural roots

We were asked again to host, but this time it was for netball in the street A whole netball tournament in the street! To our knowledge, it had never been done before, but we took on the challenge nonetheless The 9th of August 2023 was the best date for it, and we created the impossible a whole street netball tournament It wasn't easy, as we also wanted to incorporate the issue of gender-based violence against women & children in our country Primarily, it was to celebrate Women's Day and make our participating women feel special and honored Credit has to be given to the netball coaches of Juice Back (Noloda Mabaso) and Inter Miami (Dumisani Qala) respectively for helping us brainstorm the whole idea and make it a reality

We aspire to continuously progress and improve, iming to make this beautiful project more than just a ame but also an impact in the townships We are Tsemnatetsakasi, striving to host Tikiball ournaments nationwide
