Growing up in Hagerman Valley

P 12, 13, 23, 26, 27 one room school assignment was outside of Richfield. She earned $60 per month and paid $12 for room and board at the McKay’s. Mr. McKay was a section boss at the War Relocation Center for the Japanese folks. Ada was able to teach English to some of the Japanese for extra money. Other duties at school were bringing in water from the river, janitorial work, and building the fires. Her largest school was in the Peck District of Lincoln County where she had 34 students from first to eighth grade. It was challenging, and at the same time rewarding, for Ada to see students go on to college or professional work. She was able to take a job back in Shoshone where she taught some of her younger siblings. She was exceptionally proud of her younger sister, Florence, who got one of the highest grades in the country when taking her eight-grade state exam. Her family was particularly sad when her younger brother, Kenneth, was kicked in the stomach by a supposedly tame horse. He only lived 20 hours. Her mother had to prepare his body for burial. She doesn’t know how her mother did this! Ada always felt bad about telling Kenneth two weeks before that he would have to wait for her next pay check to buy a pair of new shoes he wanted. She had purchased a new hat for her special events. Kenneth died 2 weeks later. She had a tender heart and felt regret that she hadn’t purchased his new shoes. In 1910 she met the man that she would later marry. He had immigrated to the U.S. from England. Horace Sandy was the only one of 10 children to venture to America. He was man-

Growing up in Hagerman Valley

aging a farm a few miles away and took every chance he could to come and check on the dam and the ditch close to the Turnbull farm so he could see Ada. Mr. Turnbull, Ada’s father, liked him very much and after 2 years of courtship they were married on June 26, 1912 at a very small but nice home wedding, and the local Methodist Minister, Reverend Barger, performed the ceremony. Ada was gleaming in her dress made of white cotton embroidery. They settled into home life and eventually purchased farm ground about 5 miles north of Shoshone. Three children were added to the family, Donald in 1913, Alfred, my dad, in 1915, and Sarah Ellen in 1917. Their family was complete. They built a barn 1916, and then a rock house for the family. She did extra work to make ends meet, and had a teacher board with them which involved preparing a room and cooking for her as well. The first family car was purchased in 1918, a ford with side curtains that let in wind and cold, but it did go from 38 to 40 miles an hour and she felt very aristocratic! The farm crops were hay and grain with some pasture land. Ada helped when she could with the farming, and when she mowed she would set out a blanket by the haystack and the oldest, Donald, would keep an eye on his two younger siblings. They eventually drilled a well for water and would draw with a bucket and bring it to the house. All the while, Ada was involved as a trustee on the country school board, served on the election board, and took the census for many years. She remained active in the local Methodist church. Ada loved the Lord and served him throughout her community with her fine character and servant’s heart.

Ada wasn’t one to sit idle after Horace died. She helped a man who had lost his wife and had 3 young children for about a year as a cook and child sitter and really became a part of the family. She did lots of sewing and made special quilts. She even installed her own flooring. She raised chickens and could make the best homemade chicken and noodles one ever tasted. She did some travelling and stayed with family for visits and extra help. She was well informed as she engaged in any topic from religion to politics and current affairs. She had the gift of empathy and listening. Whenever I was in her presence I felt like the most special person in the world. The joy of her life was her family of 3 children, 13 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, her community, and her Lord. Oh my, the change she witnessed in her lifetime; from covered wagons to telephones and TV, automobiles, and planes. She was adaptable to whatever the Lord brought her way. Around 1943, Horace began having physical problems which led to having a benign brain tumor removed, which involved staying in Portland. He recovered, but a nerve was cut and so his balance was affected after that time. He never worked again. He was a very handsome man and I remember his white hair and him walking with a cane. Ada had many responsibilities with maintaining farm life at that time. To help ease the burden of the farm, the property was sold to two of her adult children and she settled into a home on the family property. Horace died March 27, 1963, after some trying times. They were married 50 years.
