Music in the Valley One would think that growing up in the small town of Hagerman during the 50’s and 60’s, music and the arts would be missing. It was quite the opposite. My first encounter with music was listening and dancing to records played on the old victrola my parents owned. It seems like there were hundreds of albums, including Nutcracker, to listen to! They captured the imagination of my younger sister, Lora, and I as we danced on a great stage for hours in our living room. p29

There were two large picture windows, and our imaginations went wild being exposed to great opera and musicals and songs. The thick records were 78 RPM. Popular genres back in the early 1900s’ included early jazz, dance band tunes, opera, and traditional folk music. My parents purchased them at an auction from Mrs. Northup, who lived next to my grandparents in Hagerman. Mrs. Northrup had quite the collection of records from the Italian Tenor Enrico Caruso. Also, John Phillip Sousa and his band recorded patriotic marches like “The Stars and Stripes Forever”. Other popular singers like Alma Gluck recorded tracks like “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny”. We loved dancing often in some of my mother’s old formals to increase the drama. I think in another lifetime Lora would have loved to be a professional dancer. Some of you may have seen her dancing with her Granddaughter, Allie, as she posted them having fun dancing and hamming it up! Musical dreams were ignited then. Lora went on to sing in churches accompanying herself on the guitar. When I was in the second grade my mother decided to enroll me in piano lessons, and my teacher was Venice Prince. Venice was beautiful in my eyes. She perfectly rolled her hair in a French twist and wore very feminine printed dresses. I would walk a block from the grade school one day a week to these lessons. A basic teaching method book, Hal Leonard Hanon: The Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises Book, was used. She was a wonderful person and had a sweet approach to teaching the young. Venice was married to Mr. Prince, the superintendent at the time. The Hagerman Gymnasium was named after him. Venice was one of several siblings, and the daughter of our mayor, Smokey Pugmire. I looked forward to my piano lessons, and the connection we had as teacher and student. When mom announced the next year that Venice and her husband would be moving to the Boise area, I cried. Mrs. Berry was our next piano teacher. Helen was our church pianist and organist, and the wife of Warren Berry. My sister and I would ride the school bus out past the old Owsley Bridge and

P 6, 12, 20 down the road towards the Upper Salmon Power Plant. There were two identical squarish homes that were occupied by Idaho Power employees. Warren, who worked for the Idaho Power, and his family lived in one of them. The homes are no longer there. Their daughter, Joanne, was between the age of Lora and I. We knew the family from the Methodist church we attended. While one of us was having our lesson, the other would be entertained by Joanne by going outside and getting sunflower seeds from their huge plants in the back. Joanne would take it upon herself to provide an afterschool snack of peanut butter on crackers. Helen was very proper, and my sister said that she would put a penny on each of her hands to make sure her hands were straight. Lora and I got a big kick out of comparing piano teachers’ styles. Lora and I took lessons for a few years from Helen. In the meantime, our first viewing of a live musical was at the CSI auditorium when the production was “Oklahoma”. Our family enjoyed watching this performance with a live orchestra. Our family friend, Jim Bennett, had a beautiful voice and was in the musical with a prominent role. I suppose we went to support him and to just enjoy this stage performance. It was magical to me and I was captivated by the play coming to life with wonderful singers and dramatic scenes. That is when I fell in love with musicals. Post college, my sister taught school in Hansen. During that time she had the opportunity to play the lead role in the Dilletante production of “Irene”. It was most certainly one of the highlights of her life. Through both grade school and high school in Hagerman, we had a wonderful music teacher named Joyce Snapp. We had a full band and chorus. We got to choose our favored instrument in grade school to get acquainted with the mechanics. I chose the flute as mom had played that instrument in her school days. I was able to use her flute, which was so special in Hagerman. Later, I took that flute to Africa and Italy as I played with a music group called “Santa Fe” as part of a Christian Outreach. Mrs. Snapp had several of her students sing in district competitions which provided a great opportunity to perform in front of judges to be evaluated and given recognition. It was a bit nerve racking, but all in all was a positive experience. All through school she created opportunities for us to perform in school recitals. Occasionally, Lora and I would get a solo at the school performances. I am glad I didn’t connect the

My friend Peg Hendrickson and I started singing together in high school. She played guitar and I sang harmonies. We became quite the duo. Sometimes that early life gumption will take a person places. I remember us singing to the entire student body of Gooding High School. “Hello Darkness my old friend” by Simon and Garfunkel was part of our repertoire. Music, the story and background of our individual roads, whether from small town roots or other experiences, became important throughout my life! I went on to become a vocal performance major at the University of Idaho, though after my first year I decided to switch to Elementary Education and Special Ed. Music has weaved its way throughout my entire adult life in multiple scenarios. Traveling and singing with a gospel band for two years out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a fabulous highlight as we performed all over the country in high schools, college campuses and churches in multiple states. We traveled to South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, and Italy. Music was certainly the international language and opened doors to communicate the Love of Christ. When singing in the black townships in South Africa in 1978 and again in 1980, it was humbling as apartheid was happening at the time. The people were warm and receptive to our all-white group of musicians. We were invited to a church service that was held in Soweto. We had travelled to South Africa at our own expense. The people were so appreciative that they danced and sang all the way down the middle of the church isle in brightly colored wraps and beaded head dresses, gracefully placing money in a collection plate to give to us. Even in their situation of being kept separate in these townships, they were so grateful. I will never forget the sound of their voices as they danced and sang “Thy Loving-kindness is better than life”. It was humbling and inspiring all at the same time. I owe much of my love of music and the doors that were opened for me to the encouragement and support received from my small beginnings growing up in the Hagerman Valley.
