Asournation’s250-yearbirthdayoccurs thisJuly4th,Iamremindedofalovestory whichhappeneddirectlyafterWorldWar II.Mymother,FlorenceMaryJones,was bornonMay2nd,1923.Herparents,Johnny andEthelJones,wereactiveinathriving sheepoperationinHagerman.Johnnywas animmigrantfromWales,andhermother, EthelJusticeJones,wasfromafamilyofa fewgenerationsinHagermanandgrewup inaVictorianHouseontheJusticeGrade.
HavinggraduatedfromHagermanHigh Schoolin1941,FlorenceMaryboardedthe traininBliss,Idaho,boundfortheUniversityofWashinton.Shesettleddownto campuslife,livinginasorority.Shenever forgotDecember7th,whenshewasstudyingandsomeofherhousematescamerunningintoherroomandsaid,“Turnonthe radio.”FlorenceMaryheardtheannouncer say,“TheJapanesehavebombedPearl Harbor.”Ordersweregiventoturnoutall thelightsastheysatinthedarkandlistenedtoPresidentRooseveltdeclare war.Fromthatmomenton,collegelife becamequitedifferent.
Asmostofthecollegemenjoinedtheservice,FlorenceMaryvolunteeredattheUSO andbecameefficientatthesodafountain, anddancingwiththeservicementotunes ontheJukeBox.Shealsovolunteeredtobe anurse’saideatKingCountyHospital.As somanywomenweregoingtoworkinthe

WilliamAlfredSandywasbornonJuly6th , 1915,toafarmfamilynorthofShoshone. Hisfather,HoraceSandy,wasborninEnglandtoafamilyof10children.Horacewas theonlyonefromhisimmediatefamily thatimmigratedtotheUnitedStatesinthe late1800’s.HemetandmarriedAdaBell TurnbullofShoshone.Theyhad3children; Alfredinthemiddle,hisolderbrother, Donaldandyoungersister,Ellen.Alfred wasahardworker,aswasneededonthe farminthosedays.Heattendedschoolfor atimewherehelearnedtoreadandwrite inLatin.Thoseearlydaysinaoneroom schoolgavehimawonderfulfoundationof learningtherootmeaningsofwords,spelling,andsentencestructure.(Lateron,he wasafantasticresourceineditingpapers formysiblingsandIinHighSchool.)
AftergraduatingfromShoshoneHigh School,hegraduatedfroma2-yearbusinessschoolinSaltLakeCity,Utah.Likeso manymenofthatgreatestgeneration, whenWorldWarIIstarted,Alfredenlisted andspenthistimewatchingforenemy submarinesontheEastCoastasaradio manonaPT19modelplane.Everyonewas unitedinthewareffortinkeepingour UnitedStatesofAmericafreefrombeing invaded.Bothmenandwomenfromall backgroundsandethnicitiesparticipated.WhenthewarendedonSeptember 2nd,1945,hereturnedtoShoshone. Inthemeantime,FlorenceMaryreturned fromcollegetohelpherfatherasherecoveredfromanillness,andtaughtHigh SchoolinHagermanforayear.Shesaidshe neverhadanydisciplineproblemswiththe students.Sheformedauniquetechnique forthosetimes,whereshedividedthestudentsintostudygroupswhileinclassand thestudentsworkedtogetherinsolving

AsthestarsalignedandtheLordabove wouldhaveit,afamilyfriendofFlorence Mary’sintroducedhertoAlfredafterhe hadreturnedfromWorldWarII.When theyshowedupunannouncedatherfamilyhomeinHagerman,Florencegraciously calledafriendintownandtheyallwentto danceat“Half-Way”outsideofHagerman.OnthewaybacktoShoshonethat evening,Alfred’scousinsaid,“I’llbebest manatyourwedding.”Alfredproposedto Florenceinherhomeafterproperlycourting,andcousinEdwasthebestmanat theirweddingonOctober19th 1946.My parentsdancedontheirfirstdate,they dancedassmoothlyaseverontheir50th weddinganniversary,andmostlikely,they aredancingtogetherinheavennow. FlorenceMaryandAlfredsettledintofarm andranchlifeonBillingsleyCreekwhere theyraised4children,2boysand2 girls.Lifewasfullofcommunity,school, church,andvolunteeractivities.Mom lovedcookingforusandthehired hands.Wealllovedherscrumptious meals!Evenyearslater,agentlemanwho hadworkedformydadduringhayingtime saidallthehardyhighschoolyoungmen wantedtoworkforAlfredbecauseofFlorenceMary’sgoodhomemadecooking.
Inlookingbackatthematchthatseemed tobemadeinHeaven,MomandDadhad somerealsimilarities.Bothhadfathers whoimmigratedfromtheBritishIsles. Bothgrewupsome40milesapartinfarm families.Bothlovedcommunity,family, andvolunteering.BothlovedtheLord. Someofmyfondestmemorieswereinthe oldwoodenMethodistChurchwitha steepleonSalmonStreetinHagerman.(It wasreplacedinthe60’swithamoremoderndesign.)InmySundaybestdress, squeezedbetweenmysister,parents,and grandparents,wewouldbeltoutthewrittenwordsheldinwell-wornhymnals. Womentoppedwithveiledhatsandhands coveredinwhitegloves,andmencladin suitsandtiesallstraightbacked,young andoldalike.Allseemedwellwiththe worldinthatsecureplacebetweengenerationsoffamiliesandfriendswhowere filledwithreverenceforGodandcommonalityofpurpose.Icanfeelthesecurityof myyoungerselfandhavetakenmysmalltownrootswherevermyfootstepshave led.
Myparentsmovedtotownandlivedtheir lateryearsinthehomeofmymaternal grandparents.Thiswasthehomewhere

Our county’s first priority is keeping residents safe, healthy, and prepared. We encourage everyone to take a few simple precautions to help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer.
Hot temperatures can quickly lead to dehydration and heat-related illness. Remember to:
Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
imit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours.
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
Check on older adults, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.
Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
Whether you’re visiting pools, lakes, rivers, or reservoirs, water safety should always come first.
Closely supervise children around water at all times.
Wear properly fitted life jackets when boating or participating in water sports.
