Did you know that Magic Valley has had since 2018 the Twin Falls Optimist Youth House that houses youth that have aged out of the foster care system? This is a unique service to this community and may be the only one of its kind in existence. There has been interest from other areas of the state to have something similar. The youth house has around 17 young adults at a time for a maximum of 2 years. During those 2 years, they are expected to learn life skills, seek employment and/or continue schooling. They also contribute time to the duties at the residence. This will enable the participants to have a more successful transition to independent living.
The Twin Falls Optimist were the initial supporters of this effort but there have been many other service groups that have been very helpful in making this a reality. For more information or to schedule a tour of the youth house please contact tfoptimistyouthhouse@gmail.com.

BLISS EVENT CALENDAR
(Con’t from March) Space from Magic Valley News Hagerman Valley was a small close knit community in the 1920’s, 30’s, 40's, 50's, 60’s and beyond. Everybody pretty much knew everybody else. People looked out for others and kept a watchful eye out for the neighborhood children. There wasn’t a playbook written, but there might as well have been!
My grandparents and their two children lived in three locations in the 1920’s to 1940’s: the family ranch cook shack southeast of Hagerman during lambing season, Stanley basin area in a two room camp house during the summer sheep grazing months and at their main house in Hagerman, between those times. After the busy lambing season, late spring, they moved from their ranch into their town house.
Built in 1902, the Hagerman townhouse originally had two rooms and two screened porches. This house, owned by a doctor, went up for sale in 1922, the year my grandfather and grandmother were married. Their first child, Florence Mary, was born eleven months later. The date of her birth, May 2nd, 1923. That afternoon the house was full of family and friends, anxiously, waiting for her arrival. The ‘Ladies Aide Group’ had met in another home across the street, all looking forward to hearing the good news. They couldn’t wait to see Johnny and Ethel’s new baby!
The home where Flo was born, has been added on to several times throughout the last hundred years, and has housed six generations of family and guests, ten decades of holidays, decorated patio picnics, birthday and patriotic parties, music recitals, and special elaborate meals in addition to many more happy celebrations. If the walls could only talk!
Florence Mary (Jones) Sandy turns 100 years young this year, May 2nd, 2023 and is still in good health. She is very proud to reside in that same house where she was born and still tells many memorable stories! Walls don’t have to talk!!
Back in the 1920’s and 30’s, resident’s homes in Hagerman were spaced far apart. Not all of the current townhouses had been built yet. Even though they lived within the city limits, there happened to be a small dairy across the street from where they lived. Many town’s people enjoyed this local milk delivery service. Young Florence Mary and Bill Jones often ran across the street to ask if they could help de-
liver the milk. The dairyman was grateful to have a couple of kids volunteer to ride along, jump off his delivery truck, gather up yesterday's glass containers from doorsteps and replace them with fresh new bottles of cold foamy milk. What a great life!
While living in the Hagerman home, there was an incident outside on the sidewalk where Bill toppled off his bicycle breaking a leg. When Bill began first grade his broken leg was still healing. Flo, being only three years older, pulled him in a little red wagon to and from school every day until he could walk again on his own.
Flo loved organizing neighborhood plays. She wrote original scripts, scheduled tryouts for parts and planned costumes and props. After several practices parents of the participants and extended families came to the Jones yard to watch the children’s polished performances. One birthday, in return for all of Flo’s efforts, an unexpected number of parents and children came to their patio to celebrate. In fact, so many came that her dad, Johnny, had to go to the local grocery store to pick up extra ice cream, just to accommodate the high volume of attendees.
That same birthday week, there just happened to be a sale on red socks, in the dry goods department of the mercantile. Many parents, unbeknownst to others, partook of the red sock sale! So on the day of the birthday party Florence Mary received many pairs of red anklets! Later, when they were all washed they faded greatly! From then on instead of red socks, Flo ended up owning lots of pairs of anklets in various shades and splashes of light and dark pink! She was ahead of her time!
At about eleven years old a serious accident occurred, on the ranch south of town. The mother lambs and their babies were traditionally carried to the warm lambing sheds in a specially built cart. Flo was riding on the side, just being a playful kid watching the lamb babies and their mamas when the cart tipped over. Flo fell off, her leg pinned under one of the metal wheels. The strong Basque men quickly went into action to pick up the heavy cart. One of the kind Basque fellows carried Florence Mary to the cookhouse to her mother. Ethel took Flo immediately to Twin Falls to see a doctor. Coincidentally, the doctor’s name was… take a guess! You guessed it! Dr. Lamb! (con’t in May)

We are blessed that Buhl is a very walkable city. Meaning trips on foot or trips on a bicycle are a viable transportation alternative to a vehicle. Walking is very natural to us and therefore self-evident – we don’t think about it. Still, people need to walk, we do it every day. To do that, however, we need a safe space. I walk to work and have had several close calls through the years walking down Main Street.
Ready to save some lives? Here are basic rules you'll want to follow from what I have observed:
First, stay off your phone. A lot of near misses have occurred because of distracted driving and people looking down at their laps.
Look out for pedestrians everywhere. Don't just expect pedestrians at marked crosswalks. They could cross the road anywhere — and this includes badly lit intersections!
Pay special attention around schools, parks and in residential areas. Children are known to dart across the road, so it's your duty to ensure they cross safely.
Never pass a stopped or signaling school bus. All states have laws against this for a clear reason: children will likely be on the road. And because they're short, it's all too easy to not see them behind other cars or the bus.
Never pass on crosswalks. You may not see it, but there could be pedestrians crossing the road. If you pass the driver in front of you, you could run these walkers over.
Stop well before a crosswalk. Otherwise, those crossing pedestrians could be caught in other drivers' blind spots.
Stick to the speed limit, especially in school or residential areas. The limit's there for a reason. It gives you enough time to brake and come to a stop if a pedestrian suddenly gets in your way.
“Cities were made for people to walk, and for people to live, and to exchange goods, and to exchange visits and ideas.” --Author unknown
On March 14, 2023, I signed the Idaho Transportation Departments Local Professional Services Agreements (we have designated the agreements as TAP 1 and TAP 2) following the council’s approval at the Monday, March 13, meeting. Buhl was awarded these grant funds totaling $754,000, to construct sidewalks down 7th Ave North, Sawtooth Avenue, up Clear Lakes Road (Highway 46) and around to 6th Avenue North on Main Street. Since concrete is so expensive right now, we will be crossing our fingers during the bid process. This is a very big deal and something we need to celebrate!
