James Peter Gannon era un gran giocatore di golf. Nono figlio di irlandesi emigrati a Buenos Aires, tornò in Europa

all’inizio del ’900 e venne ordinato prete, a Londra. Assunto come direttore nel club più antico della Svizzera, a St.Moritz, decise poi di mettere da parte la religione. Si sposò e iniziò a disegnare campi di golf. L’Italia lo adottò subito e alla sua matita si devono gli splendidi percorsi di Milano, Courmayeur, Firenze Ugolino, Sanremo e Varese.

Il suo primo progetto nel nostro Paese gli venne però commissionato dai proprietari di uno straordinario cinque stelle, il Villa d’Este di Cernobbio, icona dell’hôtellerie italiana. A 90 anni dalla fondazione, dobbiamo ringraziare Gannon per averci regalato un gioiello senza tempo. Terzo in Lombardia e quinto in Italia per data di fondazione, il Circolo Golf Villa d’Este è fra i campi di golf più belli del mondo. Molte generazioni sono passate, ma mai a Montorfano sono venuti meno lo spirito sportivo, il fairplay e la grande tradizione del Gioco. Tutto però si è evoluto e, nel celebrare un anniversario che guarda al traguardo del secolo, sappiamo di rivolgerci a un bel gruppo di giovani che continuerà la storia del Club. Proprio in questi giorni, sul lago di Como, è tornato a navigare il Concordia, piroscafo di 54 metri che ha lo stesso anno di nascita del nostro Circolo. Il suo motore a vapore e ogni parte dello scafo è stata restaurata, per tenerlo a passo con i tempi. Noi, stagione dopo stagione, abbiamo fatto lo stesso con il campo, la Clubhouse, le strutture e i servizi del Club, conservandoli, aggiornandoli e, se possibile, migliorandoli. Un lavoro impegnativo, ma ispirato da un grande passato e lanciato verso un futuro ricco di soddisfazioni. Villa d’Este: 90 anni e non sentirli.

His first project in our country, however, was commissioned by the owners of an extraordinary five-star hotel, the Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, one of the icons of Italian hospitality. 90 years after the foundation, we have to thank Gannon for leaving us with a timeless jewel. Third oldest in Lombardy and fifth in Italy by date of foundation, the Golf Club Villa d’Este is one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. Many generations have passed by, but never in Montorfano have failed sportsmanship, fair play and the great tradition of the game. But everything has evolved and, in celebrating an anniversary approaching the century milestone, we know we are turning to a nice group of young people who will continue the tradition of the Club. Just recently Lake Como has witnessed the comeback of the Concordia vessel, a 54-meter steamship inaugurated on the same year of our club.

Its steam engine and every part of the hull have been restored, to keep it up with the times. Season after season, we have been doing the same with the golf course, the clubhouse, the facilities and the services of the Club, preserving, updating, and, if possible, even improving them. A demanding job, but inspired by a great past and looking forward to a rewarding future. Villa d’Este: 90 years old and still young.

l a s t e s sa emozione, la s tes s a mer av ig lia Proprio come il viaggiatore che idealmente ci accompagnerà in queste pagine di golf e bellezza, anche io ho

provato, quasi 25 anni fa, quell’emozione di rapimento e meraviglia all’ingresso del Golf Club Villa d’Este.

Non ero mai entrato in un circolo di golf, fui incuriosito dalle prime trasmissioni via satellite e, grazie a un amico golfista, varcai questo cancello. Ora ringrazio il cielo di aver conosciuto il golf qui al Villa d’Este e non altrove. Ma il passaparola e gli amici che ti presentano in segreteria, oggi non bastano più. Oggi il golf e i suoi circoli devono sapersi proporre in prima persona, mostrando ad appassionati e neofiti la loro unicità e perfezione. Ecco quindi l’idea di un magazine dedicato al Golf Club Villa d’Este nell’occasione perfetta dei suoi 90 anni. Un magazine che possa allo stesso tempo celebrare e valorizzare, illustrare e invogliare, mostrando gli angoli più suggestivi delle 18 buche di Montorfano inseriti nel più ampio e altrettanto incantevole contesto del territorio comasco. Un viaggio nella bellezza: quella del Golf Club Villa d’Este, quella del Lago di Como.

ust as the traveler who will ideally accompany us through these pages of golf and beauty, I also experienced, nearly 25 years ago, the same feeling of rapture and wonder when entering the Golf Club Villa d’Este. I had never entered a golf club before, but I was intrigued by the first satellite broadcasting and, thanks to a golfer friend, I crossed this threshold. Now I thank heaven that I started playing golf here at the Villa d’Este and not somewhere else. But nowadays word of mouth and friends who can introduce you to the club are no longer enough. Today golf and golf clubs must know how to promote themselves, showing their uniqueness and perfection to enthusiasts and novices. Hence the idea of ​​a magazine dedicated to the Golf Club Villa d’Este, on the perfect occasion of his 90th birthday. Un po’ sipario, un po’ maggiordomo, mi svela lo spettacolo, mi annuncia alla corte del golf. Varcando quest’ingresso si prospetta un viaggio nella storia e nello stile di un circolo unico in Italia e forse al mondo, si accede alla bellezza del verde, dello sport, dell’amicizia attraverso la bellezza del territorio e della cultura comasche. 18 buche mi attendono, 69 colpi mi sfidano, 90 anni mi scorrono innanzi. L’età non conta, la nobiltà neppure, al Villa d’Este sembra

slow movement, accompanying and feeding expectations. The gate of the Golf Club Villa d’Este is opening in front of me. Half curtain, half butler, it reveals to me the show, announcing me to the court of golf.

Passing through this entrance I am starting a journey through the history and the style of a club which is unique in Italy and perhaps in the world; I am entering the beauty of the green, of sport and friendship, surrounded by the beauties of Como landscape and culture. 18 holes are waiting for me, 69 shots are challenging me, 90 years of history are flashing before my eyes. Age does not matter; neither does nobility, because at the Golf Club Villa

d’Este you can feel as if you were enjoying a privilege: playing there becomes an indelible memory. Elegance, perfection, completeness: these are the emotions that I feel and I wish to share. Members or guest players, champions or young golfers, each one chooses and finds his paradise in the Golf Club Villa d’Este: the tee of hole No.1, the climb of No.5, the pond of No.12, the return to clubhouse of No.18, the microcosm that each hole generates in the universe of a varied and eventful course.

Le radici: un sogno nato nel 1926 U

n compleanno lungo una stagione: per festeggiare e ricordare 90 anni di storia con gli amici del Golf Villa d’Este. Capitare da queste parti nell’anniversario di quel beneagurante 1926, riserva onori speciali, oltre che colori stupendi. In coincidenza con il rosa delle azalee e con il primo verde brillante dei prati, due feste della gioventù, due gare di alto livello, hanno fatto fiorire una nuova primavera al circolo. Il 25 aprile il Memorial Teodoro Soldati “Azzurri&Friends” ha riunito oltre 50 promesse del golf italiano per ricordare il sorriso e il gioco di quel compagno tanto giovane quanto vincente, in campo e nella vita.

Teodoro, che conosceva bene Villa d’Este, se ne è andato troppo presto per una leucemia fulminante.

Malattia che ora, anche grazie al ricavato dell’evento, verrà combattuta con ancora più forza dal Comitato Maria Letizia Verga. Pochi giorni dopo il Golf Villa d’Este ha ripetuto freschezza, fasto e bravura ospitando i Campionati Italiani Match-Play: dal 28 aprile al 2 maggio si sono riuniti i migliori amateur nazionali, o meglio, anche in questo caso, i migliori giovani del golf italiano. Con grande soddisfazione della Federazione Italiana Golf, ad alzare il Trofeo Giuseppe Silva sono stati il 16enne Massimiliano Campigli (Torino) e la 14enne Alba Paltrinieri (Villa Condulmer) al termine di un’emozionante testa a testa fatto di put da venti metri e birdie a non finire con

gli altrettanto bravi Jacopo Guasconi e Alessandra Fanali. A festeggiare i 90 anni di storia c’è però anche la quotidianità dei soci, il professionismo dei campioni e l’eleganza degli sponsor. Ecco dunque perché per salutare l’estate si susseguono la Coppa del Presidente il 12 giugno, la grande gara e il gala celebrativi del 90° il 18 giugno e la suggestiva Gara notturna il 30 dello stesso mese. Per segnare il passare del tempo, anzi per fermarlo in attimi indimenticabili, Rolex ha voluto ideare un’edizione speciale dell’orologio che più rappresenta i valori del golf: l’Explorer. Naturalmente in soli 90 esemplari.

L’Invitational Rolex – Gioielleria Colombo gara in programma per il 21 giugno riassume prestigio e progresso. Passato e presente del Golf Villa d’Este invece sono incarnati dalla Pro Am del 19 settembre in cui i giocatori dell’European Challenge Tour sono invitati dalla Green Golf Academy di Villa d’Este a proseguire idealmente il loro Open d’Italia, ospitato nella settimana precedente dal Golf Club Milano, circolo in double membership con le 18 buche di Montorfano che fecero da palcoscenico a questa prestigiosa gara italiana ben 12 volte dal 1928. Il 90° anno scoccherà sul grande orologio della Club House, ma i rintocchi risuoneranno ancora a lungo. Perché Villa d’Este è un fiore all’occhiello, Villa d’Este è nel fiore degli anni.

The roots, a dream born in 1926 A

Coinciding with the pink of the azaleas and the first bright green of the meadows, two youth festivals, two high-level competitions, have represented a new spring for the golf club. On April 25, the Teodoro Soldati Memorial “Azzurri&Friends” brought together more than 50 promises of Italian golf to remember the smile and the game of that mate so young and successful on the golf course as well as in his life. Teodoro, who knew Villa d’Este very well, passed away too soon for a fulminant leukemia. A disease that now, thanks also to the proceeds from the event, will be fought even more strongly by the Maria Letizia Verga Committee.

La grandezza di una Storia V

illa d’Este. Questo nome porta il Lago di Como nel mondo. Un Grand Hotel di fama universale, un circolo di golf di univoca perfezione. L’omonimia, mi raccontano, è atavica eredità, ricordo di un passato in comune. Lo stemma di Villa d’Este che ricorre dorato, stampato, inciso su ogni stoviglia, su ogni cuscino, su ogni porta è blasone datato 1926, anno in cui proprio quell’albergo decise che anche il golf non poteva mancare nella lussuosa offerta ai turisti americani. Uno sguardo giù dalla terrazza e mi accorgo che Montorfano non poteva essere scelta migliore: il maggiore Peter Gannon ebbe vista lunga nello scolpire i saliscendi, attorniare il lago, infoltire il bosco. Il campo di oggi è frutto di 90 anni di verde e sportiva architettura, ma geniali furono i fondatori.

Villa d’Este Country Club si chiamava il circolo, affittuario di una proprietà destinata poi a diventare sua per forza, di diritto. Dépendance è riduttivo, forse meglio dire club esclusivo, ritrovo reale, sede pioniera: il golf Villa d’Este ospitò su queste poltrone vip e magnati d’Europa e del mondo, servendo tè, carte e società, ma su quei campi contribuì decisamente allo sviluppo del golf in Italia. Se ogni decennio ha avuto la sua stirpe reale (Alfonso XIII di Borbone negli anni ’30, Leopoldo II del Belgio negli anni ’50, Edoardo VIII duca di Windsor negli anni ’60), ogni anno ha avuto il suo illustre trofeo, come testimoniamo le targhe in legno che mi ammoniscono nella sala della Club House, gioiello di accoglienza ed eleganza, disegnata dall’architetto Giuseppe Bergomi. Già

nel 1928 inizia il suo record nella storia della più importante gara di golf italiana: arriva a Montorfano l’Open d’Italia e fino al 1972 ci ritornerà altre 11 volte. Nessun campo finora ha osato tanta frequenza.

E gli Internazionali Dilettanti? La lista è lunga e quasi odierna, 97 edizioni tra maschili e femminili, con nomi che di dilettantesco hanno solo i primordi: un certo Josè Maria Olazabal ad esempio si svezzò a Villa d’Este con due vittorie, tra le donne perentorio il dominio di Ida Goldschmid che, insieme a Vanda Rosa e Rosanna Bergamo, fece il dopoguerra roseo e gentile. Spumeggianti devono essere stati infatti gli anni ’50 -’60 con il boom del golf nei numeri, nelle provenienze, nelle migliorie. La Club house parla dialetti e lingue: il torinese dell’ingegner Nani, il milanese della famiglia Gavazzi, l’inglese del divo Gregory Peck. Sopra la buca 7, non si nota ora, ma c’era perfino un campo da bocce per intrattenere i tanti autisti che facevano la spola con il rinomato albergo padrone. Ma nel 1981 esso divenne solo lontano parente. Il Circolo Golf Villa d’Este infatti si sciacqua in fretta dell’acquisto lampo della multinazionale Palmolive datato 1977 e corre veloce e deciso verso l’unica soluzione possibile: essere dei soci per i soci. È il vate presidente Leopoldo Varasi a garantire e realizzare l’utopia. Una società immobiliare, tre miliardi di lire in sottoscrizioni di circa 300 soci: Villa d’Este appartiene al golf e a se stesso. La storia del circolo è un continuo migliorarsi: nell’86 contò addirittura lo stesso numero di manifestazioni, 86

gare ed eventi sul campo e nelle sale di Montorfano che nel frattempo ha allungato la buca 1, modificato la 13 e la 14, ampliato spazi, spostato scale, accolto nuovi soci. Eppure questa perfezione e pulizia hanno rischiato di andare letteralmente in fumo: il legno che odoro e faccio scricchiolare è erede di quello che fu divorato da un incontenibile incendio, la notte dell’8 dicembre 1990. Solo le coppe fuse e il loro vuoto in bacheca possono tradire il verificarsi di quell’evento: tutto è tornato a vivere al Golf Villa d’Este, motivo e sprone di nuova eleganza, proverbiale bellezza, classico agonismo. Perfino la casa del golf mondiale è scesa nella casa del golf italiano: nel 1998 qui si è disputato il Saint Andrews Trophy, la sfida EuropaGran Bretagna/Irlanda che esalta gli appassionati quanto la Ryder Cup. E per festeggiare le 80 candeline, anche Edoardo e Francesco Molinari hanno sfiorato la sua erba, alzato un suo trofeo. Il campo ora aspetta anche la mia storia: non 90, ma infinite primavere sono fiorite e fioriranno qui al Circolo Golf Villa d’Este.

A Story of greatness Villa d’Este. This name carries Lake Como in the world. A

Grand Hotel of international renown, a golf club of unique perfection. The homonymy, they tell me, comes from their ancestral heritage, from the memory of a common past. The recurring golden crest of Villa d’Este, printed or etched on each dish, on each pillow, on each door dates back to 1926, the year in which the hotel decided that the luxurious offer to American tourists should also include a golf course. A look down from the terrace and I realize that they could not have chosen a better location: Major Peter Gannon was very long-sighted in shaping the ups and downs, encircling the lake, thickening the woods. Today’s course is the result of 90 years of green and sport architecture, but the founders were truly ingenious. The club was named Villa d’Este Country Club, tenant of a property destined to become later his own by force of law. Outbuilding is an understatement, maybe better to say exclusive club, royal hangout, pioneer venue: the Golf Club Villa d’Este hosted on these armchairs VIP and tycoons of Europe and the world, serving tea, cards and companies, but this course contributed significantly also to the development of golf in Italy. If every decade has had its royal line (Alfonso XIII of Bourbon in the ‘30s, Leopold II of Belgium in the ‘50s, Edward VIII Duke of Windsor in the ‘60s), every year has had his illustrious trophy, as witnessed by the wooden plaques looking down at me in the clubhouse lounge, reception and elegant jewel, designed by Giuseppe Bergomi. Already in 1928 the club inaugurated the path towards its record in the history of the most important competition of Italian golf: in that year the Italian Open were played in Montorfano for the first time and until 1972 they have been hosted here another 11 times. No other course has so far dared such frequency. And the International Amateurs? The list is long and we can count 97 editions between male and female, with names that only at the beginning were of amateurs: a certain Jose Maria Olazabal for example emerged at Villa d’Este with two victories; while Ida Goldschmid’s peremptory rule, together with the endeavors of Vanda Rosa and Rosanna Bergamo, made the

postwar season rosy and kind. The ‘50s and ‘60s witnessed the golf boom in numbers, in origins, in improvements. The Clubhouse spoke dialects and languages: the Turin dialect of Engineer Nani, the Milanese dialect of the Gavazzi family, the English language of the superstar Gregory Peck. Over the 7th hole, we cannot notice now, but there was even a bowling alley to entertain the many drivers who drove back and forth from the renowned hotel. But in 1981 the golf court became only a distant relative of the parent hotel. The Golf Club Villa d’Este, after being purchased and shortly owned by the multinational Palmolive in 1977, ran fast and purposefully toward the only possible solution: to be of the members and for the members. It was the bard President Leopoldo Varasi who ensured and realized the utopia. A real estate company, three billions lire in subscriptions of approximately 300 members: Villa d’Este finally belonged to the golf and to itself. The history of the club is that of a continuous improvement process: in 1986 the Montorfano golf court hosted 86 tournaments and events, while in the meantime the club also lengthened hole No.1, modified No.13 and No.14, expanded spaces, moved stairs, welcomed new members. Yet this perfection and cleanliness risked to be literally blown away: the wood that I smell and make creak under my steps is the heir of that which was eaten by an uncontrollable fire on the night of the 8th December 1990. Only the molten trophies and their empty places in the showcase may betray the occurrence of that event: everything is back to life at the Golf Club Villa d’Este, motive and incentive to new elegance, proverbial beauty, classical competitiveness. Even the home of world’s golf came to the house of Italian golf: in 1998 the Golf Club Villa d’Este hosted the Saint Andrews Trophy, the Europe-Great Britain / Ireland challenge that excites fans as much as the Ryder Cup. And to celebrate its 80th birthday, even Edoardo and Francesco Molinari touched our club’s grass, raising its trophy. The court now awaits my story too: not just 90, but endless springs have blossomed and will blossom here at the Golf Club Villa d’Este.

Un lussureggiante tappeto verde L’essenza del golf è quel verde dispiegarsi di erba

che in pochi millimetri può cambiare gioco, colore, velocità. Le essenze del Golf Villa d’Este, erbacee e arboree, sono frutto di 90 anni di cura e selezione.

“Una piccola bomboniera” mi assicura Giuseppe Picariello, greenkeeper qui da oltre vent’anni, mentre mi appresto alle mie 18 buche, impressionato dal lussureggiante e lussuoso corridoio verde della 1. In realtà dovrò orientarmi in oltre 60 ettari di campo, racchiusi gelosamente nella Riserva Naturale del Lago di Montorfano. Non ho la sensazione delle immensità esotiche o americane, tremila piante mi custodiscono, ne devo tenere conto quando tiro il mio drive. Ma la pallina corre veloce, attraversa le varie altezze del percorso e dell’erba perfetta: dai 3,7 mm del green ai 60 del raft. Giuseppe sa di avere a che fare con una macchina d’epoca: “Il campo di Villa d’Este è elegante, prezioso, veloce, ma anche delicato”.

Per questo da anni, lui superintendent e i suoi collaboratori, scelgono le essenze più adatte, studiano il momento giusto per tagli, concimazioni, carotature, si avvalgono delle conoscenze di esperti quali James

Beard. E tutto senza farsi scoprire. Macchine da taglio, rastrelli, trattori spariscono magicamente quando i soci e i campioni scendono in campo, agli 800 irrigatori basta un tocco di smartphone per dissetare quella zolla un po’ secca. Eppure con così tanta acqua a disposizione, direttamente dal Lago di Como, grazie ad un investimento notevole di qualche anno fa, non ne se spreca neanche una goccia. Attento alle tematiche ecologiche, mi rilasso quando scopro che Villa d’Este ha raggiunto la Certificazione Ambientale Geo, ottavo circolo in Italia, con la costante sperimentazione di prodotti biologici e l’intera buca 4 curata con il protocollo BioGolf. Alla 9 la pallina mi finisce immancabilmente nel bunker, l’insidia di sabbia bagnata. Ne esco fortunatamente e nel rastrellare quelle orme, penso a chi lo fa sistematicamente più volte a settimana e poi taglia con quella piega il green che ora andrò a calpestare ignaro ed esigente. Ripiano il pitch, rialloggio il divot: con gesti da vero golfista, anche se principiante, mantengo il rispetto dell’essenza del Golf Villa d’Este, il suo campo sempreverde.

A lush green carpet The essence of golf is that unfolding of green grass,

which in a few millimeters can change game, color, speed. The green essences of the Golf Villa d’Este, herbaceous and arboreal, are the result of 90 years of care and selection. “A small jewel” assures me Giuseppe Picariello, green-keeper here for over twenty years, as I am approaching my 18-hole golf course, impressed by the lush and luxurious green corridor of hole No.1. In fact, I will have to orient myself in over 60 hectares of course, jealously enclosed in the Natural Reserve of Lake Montorfano.

I am not feeling the immensity of exotic or American courses, because three thousand plants are guarding me, and I have to take it into account when I pull my drive. But the ball runs fast, it moves through the different heights of the course and of the perfect grass: from the 3.7 mm of the green to the 60 mm of the raft. Joseph knows he is handling an antique car: “The course of Villa d’Este is elegant, precious, fast, but also delicate.” For this reason, for years, he and his staff have been choosing the most suitable species, studying the right time for cuts, fertilizing, coring, and also taking advantage of the wide knowledge

of external experts such as James Beard. And they did all this work, without even being noticed. Cutting machines, rakes, tractors disappear magically when partners and champions enter the course; a touch on a smartphone is enough to let the 800 sprinklers quench the thirst of some dry clump. Yet with so much water available, directly from Lake Como, thanks to a considerable investment of a few years ago, not even a drop gets wasted. Eco-conscious as I am, I relax when I find out that Villa d’Este has achieved the environmental certification Geo, eighth club in Italy, with the constant testing of biological products and the entire hole 4 treated according to the BioGolf protocol. At hole 9 my ball invariably ends up in the bunker, the danger of wet sand. I manage to come out and while raking my footsteps, I think of those who are doing it systematically several times a week and then cutting with that precise bend the green that now I’ll step on unsuspecting and demanding. I level the pitch, put up the divot: with gestures typical of a true golfer, despite being an absolute beginner, I show my respect to the essence of the Golf Club Villa d’Este, his evergreen course.

chino per mettere la pallina sul tee di partenza: è il primo contatto con il percorso. È un rituale solo apparentemente scontato, in realtà sempre diverso: in ogni campo, in ogni buca. Lo stesso terreno erboso, che all’occhio si mostra uniforme, nasconde infinite sfumature dovute alle pendenze, al taglio dell’erba, agli ostacoli, alle stagioni. Il Golf Club Villa d’Este non sfugge a questo rito, ma la sua tradizione lo rende ancor più degno di attenzione e dedizione. Le caratteristiche del campo, nella loro bellezza, difficoltà e storia, mi permettono di vivere l’essenza di questo meraviglioso gioco oltre lo scorrere del tempo.

A Montorfano respiro il fascino tipico del golf: uno stile inconfondibile, dato dalla naturalezza con cui il percorso di ogni buca si snoda lungo il terreno, come se fosse sempre stato così e non la costruzione di un sogno datato 1926. Tutti i campi racchiudono tantissime storie, vicende che si moltiplicano senza fine fra gioie e delusioni, dopo un bel colpo o un banale errore. E’ una grande memoria quella del Circolo Golf Villa d’Este dove nessuna foglia è anonima cosi come nessun viottolo o filo d’erba: tutto è vivo nella mente di chi pratica il golf e di chi lo prepara, tutto è prestigioso ricordo, fascinoso presente.

It is a ritual only seemingly granted, in fact yet ever-changing: on every course, in every hole. The same grassy ground, almost uniform to the eye, hides infinite shades, due to the slopes, the different cuts of the grass, the obstacles, the changing seasons. The Golf Club Villa d’Este is no exception to this rite, but its tradition makes it even more worthy of attention and dedication. The characteristics of the course, in their beauty, difficulty and history, allow me to live the essence of this wonderful game beyond the passage of time.

In Montorfano I breathe the charm of golf: a unique style, due to the ease with which the location of each hole runs along the ground, as if it had always been like that and it were not the achievement of a dream dated 1926.

All courses contain uncountable stories, recurring moments of joy and disappointment, after a good shot or a simple mistake. The Golf Club Villa d’Este has a great memory, where no leaf is anonymous, so as no small path or blade of grass: everything is alive in the minds of those who play or prepare golf, everything becomes a prestigious memory, a fascinating present.

Strano gioco il golf. Giudice di me stesso, solo con

i miei bastoni eppure insieme ai miei compagni e avversari. Anziano ma giovane, scarso ma esperto: le regole del golf annullano differenze e disparità.

Senza un vero e proprio arbitro, sono io a contare i miei colpi, a giocare la pallina dove la trovo, a mostrare riguardo verso gli altri giocatori, agevolarli se possibile. Integrità, disciplina, cortesia alimentate dalla possibilità di giocarsela alla pari in età, livello, genere. Il vantaggio dell’handicap (sistema internazionale che assegna un punteggio a ciascun giocatore di modo che possa avere a disposizione più o meno colpi a seconda del suo livello) rende il golf, unico tra gli sport, una disciplina molto più democratica di quanto si creda. Anche l’etichetta non va intesa come espressione di distinzione elitaria ma di rispetto verso il prossimo e verso il campo. La sfida che può nascere all’interno del Golf Club Villa d’Este è soprattutto con te stesso: concentrarsi sul percorso, nervoso, vario, non è facile quando il verde ti circonda

e ti fa sembrare la gara una passeggiata. Quella buca che ti sembra così vicina, così golosa, è invece così sgusciante, quasi si muovesse. Il golf è sport interiore, subdolo nella sua semplicità, maniacale nei suoi movimenti. Per molti aspetti ricorda il tennis, seppur senza la sua fisicità e intensità. Mente e emozioni prendono il sopravvento e spesso influenzano il gioco. Il golf è fatto di momenti di stallo tra un colpo e l’altro, istanti in cui passa di tutto, un arco temporale infinito se confrontato con i due secondi di esecuzione dello swing: quello srotolarsi del corpo in un gesto di precisione, potenza e intelligenza che unisce creatività, strategia, tecnica, sensibilità. A ogni colpo entro in uno stato meditativo e ne esco grazie al compagno/avversario, pronto a emularti e superarti, a complimentarsi e mai criticarti. Fine e scopo del gioco è raggiungere la 18: mettere in buca, certo, ma anche riconoscere divertimento e gratitudine con una stretta di mano e uno sguardo alla terrazza dove mi attende un ricco piatto in compagnia.

Spirit of the game Between body and mind: a challenge for the spirit G

olf is a strange game indeed. Judge of myself, alone with my clubs, but still together with my teammates and opponents. Old yet young, mediocre yet experienced: the rules of golf cancel differences and disparities. Without a real referee, I am counting my strokes, playing the ball where I find it, showing consideration for the other players, helping them if possible. Integrity, discipline, courtesy, fueled by the chance to play on an equal footing in spite of age, level or gender differences. The advantage of handicap (the international system that assigns a score to each player, so that he or she can have more or less available shots depending on his or her level) makes golf, unique among sports, a much more democratic discipline than you might think. Even the etiquette should not be intended as an expression of elitist distinction, but as a demonstration of respect towards others and towards the course. The challenge that can arise within the Golf Club Villa d’Este is mostly with yourself: focusing on the path, nervous, varied, is not easy when the green surrounds

you and makes the game feel like a peaceful stroll.

That hole that seems so close, so delicious, is actually rather slippery, almost elusive. Golf is an inner sport, deceitful in its simplicity, meticulous in his movements. In many ways reminiscent of tennis, albeit without his physical intensity. Mind and emotions take over and often affect the game.

Golf is made of stall moments between a stroke and the next one, instants in which everything flashes by, an infinite time span if compared with the two seconds needed to execute a swing: that unrolling of the body in a gesture of precision, power and intelligence that combines creativity, strategy, technique, sensitivity. With each stroke I enter a meditative state, from which I emerge thanks to my mate / opponent, ready to emulate and surpass, to compliment and never criticize. The ultimate goal of the game is to reach the 18th hole: to hole, of course, but also to recognize fun and gratitude with a handshake and a look to the terrace where a nice lunch in good company awaits me.

i sono l’erba, la sabbia, le buche e le bandierine colorate. Non sono al mare e, nonostante le pendenze e le viste sorprendenti, nemmeno in montagna. Sono al Golf Club Villa D’Este. Qui, a volte, mi manca il fiato, non solo per lo sforzo di una ripida salita con tutta l’attrezzatura da spingere. Qui a volte manca il fiato per la bellezza di quanto si vede dal green appena conquistato, per i profumi e i colori dell’erba appena tagliata, per quel grande cespuglio di rosmarino o per il folto gruppo di ortensie che ti aspetta dietro a quella curva. Davanti agli occhi, disegnati su un cielo azzurro e pulito, si stagliano i contorni del Resegone e l’imponenza della Grigna innevata. Più in basso si intravede il lago, quando ancora non è nascosto dal lussureggiante verde fogliame di carpini, betulle, querce e castagni. Basterebbe una passeggiata in questo paesaggio incantevole e incantato per sentirsi in pace con sé stessi, per rendere perfetta una giornata e provare sensazioni appaganti, per creare ricordi piacevoli, tonificare il corpo e la mente. Troppo facile o troppo poco. Qui si gioca a golf. “Il modo migliore per rovinare una bella passeggiata nei prati” disse Oscar Wilde, il modo migliore per racchiudere uno sport in uno spazio aperto, diciamo qui.

There are grass, sand, holes and colored flags. I am

not at the seaside and despite the slopes and amazing views, neither in the mountains. I am at the Golf Club Villa d’Este. Here, sometimes, I find myself out of breath, not only for the strain of climbing some steep slope while carrying all the equipment with me. Here sometimes I feel that my breath is being taken away by the beauty of what I see from the green that I just conquered, by the perfume and the color of the freshly cut grass, of that big bush of rosemary or of the large group of hydrangeas that awaits me behind the next curve. Before my eyes, drawn on a clear blue sky, stand out the outlines of the Resegone and the grandeur of a snowy Grigna. Further down I can see the lake, at least when it is not hidden by the lush green foliage of hornbeam, birch, oak and chestnut trees.

A walk in this charming alpine landscape would be more than enough to feel at peace with yourself, to make your day absolutely perfect and fill your heart with rewarding sensations, to create pleasant memories, to tone your body and your mind. Too easy or too little. Here we play golf. “The best way to ruin a good walk in the meadows” as Oscar Wilde said, or “The best way to enclose a sport in an open space”, as we say here.

Belle e dannate: ogni buca una sfida Hole 12

Per un golfista ogni buca è diversa dalle altre e

costituisce sempre una sfida personale. Per un golfista ogni buca del Villa d’Este ha una particolarità, una difficoltà, una finezza che gliela farà ricordare con piacere, orgoglio o rammarico, indipendentemente dalle sue oggettive difficoltà. Il mio primo incontro con il campo è un corridoio, lungo, maestoso, con vista. La buca 1 è un par 5 dalle emozioni forti: le pareti sono alberi rigogliosi, il pavimento un tappeto verde che scende come un red carpet verso le luci del green, termine di una passeggiata affacciata sul Resegone, la montagna seghettata che sovrasta Lecco.

Il tee shot da impostare tutto a destra, il bunker e il dislivello finale a proteggere la bandiera la rendono una buca bella e dannata, l’inizio di una galoppata in testa o di una rincorsa lunga 18 ostacoli. E dopo la conquista della 2 in salita, della 5 alla cieca, della 8 in curva, della 10 in un soffio, arrivo al fascino e al timore della 12. La buca dell’acqua. Già uscire dal tee di partenza è una soddisfazione, angusto com’è tra gli alberi che circondano la prima parte del percorso, ma la vera insidia è nascosta dietro all’ultima gobba del fairway: un laghetto sulla sinistra riflette il sole e inghiotte palline per la bellezza e la crudeltà di questo gioco. Sorvolarlo significa salvezza, ma non certo successo. Ci sono ancora i tre bunker, il green rialzato, il pendio alberato sulla destra per arrivare alla bandierina. Altre buche invece iniziano prima di

giocarle. Così è la 16. In un campo in cui i dislivelli si susseguono continuamente, giunto alla salita ripida della terzultima perla del campo di Montorfano, sento un po’ più di fatica. Per evitare di portare tutta la sacca in cima alla partenza, devo scegliere prima il ferro da usare e non è detto che sia quello più efficace.

Tutta in un colpo o quasi questa buca, bomboniera del percorso, sovrastata e abbracciata in uno sguardo.

Eppure il green ampio, sopraelevato rispetto al fairway e in lieve pendenza verso il fondo, visto dall’alto, trae in inganno, induce ad essere sottovalutato. Niente è scontato a Villa d’Este. Neanche la meraviglia di

rivedere la Club House là in fondo. Alla buca 18 infatti scopro un altro magnifico corridoio, quello che ti riporta a casa, alla sede del Golf Villa d’Este che ti guarda mentre lasci l’ultimo sigillo sulla tua avventura, la tua sfida. Alla 18 parto lontano, come nella buca precedente dallo sfondo altrettanto suggestivo (alla 17 erano le montagne a incantarmi).

Non vedo l’ora di avvicinarmi a quelle azalee fiorite, a quella terrazza affollata, a quell’orologio che ha scandito a mia insaputa le ore del mio divertimento.

Il put del 18° green è ovazione nell’arena del golf e silente soddisfazione di avercela fatta.

Hole 18

Beautiful and damned: each hole a challenge For a golfer every hole is different and always a personal

challenge. For a golfer each hole of the Golf Club Villa d’Este has a special feature, a difficulty, a delicacy that will let him remember it with pleasure, pride or regret, regardless of its objective difficulties. My first encounter with the course is a corridor, long, majestic, with a view.

The 1st hole is a par 5 of strong emotions: the walls are lush trees, the floor a green carpet that descends like a red carpet toward the lights of the green, the end of a promenade overlooking the Resegone, the serrated mountain overlooking Lecco. The tee shot, which should be set up hard right, the bunker and the final difference in height, which protect the flag, every feature makes it a

beautiful and damned hole, the start of a ride in the lead or of an 18-obstacle long chase. And after winning the climb of the 2, the blind spot of the 5, the curve of the 8, the 10 in a breath, I arrive to the charm and the dread of the 12. The water hole. Getting out of the tee is already a satisfaction, narrow as it is between the trees surrounding the first part of the route, but the real danger is hidden behind the last hump of the fairway: a pond on the left reflects the sun and swallows the balls, embodying the beauty and the cruelty of this game. Overflying it means salvation, but not necessarily success. There are still three bunkers, the elevated green, the tree-lined hillside on the right before I can get to the flag.

Hole 16

Other holes instead begin even before getting to play them. Such is 16. In a course in which the slopes follow one another, once I arrive to the steep climb of the third last pearl of the Montorfano course, I feel quite tired. To avoid carrying the whole bag to the top of tee shot, I have to choose the iron I wish to use first and not necessarily it will turn out to be the most effective one. To be played all in one shot or almost so, a small jewel dominated and embraced by a single glance. Yet the large green, elevated above the fairways and gently sloping toward the bottom, seen from above, is deceptive, and induces to be underestimated. Nothing is taken for granted at Villa d’Este. Not even the wonder of seeing the

Club House there in the background. At hole 18 in fact I discover another magnificent corridor, the one that brings you home to the headquarters of the Golf Club Villa d’Este, looking at me as I apply the final seal on my adventure, on my challenge. At hole 18 I start quite far away, as I did at the previous hole, endowed with an equally dramatic backdrop (at hole 17 I had been enchanted by the striking view of the mountains). I am looking forward to getting closer to those flowering azaleas, to that crowded terrace, to that clock that, unbeknownst to me, marked the hours of my delight. The put of the 18th green is ovation in the arena of golf and silent satisfaction of having finally made it.

perfetta gradazione e intensità dei manti erbosi che lo ricoprono per 60 ettari. Il Golf Club Villa d’Este è verde perché giovane. Un paradosso per un circolo novantenne? Non se incontri lungo il percorso ragazzi con la stessa serietà e voglia di giocare, con lo stesso sorriso dei seniores, i cinquantenni e più che solitamente si associano a sacca e bastoni. Di juniores e giovani sotto i 18 anni ce ne sono quasi un’ottantina al Villa d’Este, seguiti e invogliati nella loro formazione a uno sport non tradizionalmente adolescenziale da una vera e propria accademia del golf. Villa d’Este infatti è verde anche per la sua Green Golf Academy, recentissima soluzione di gestione delle attività di insegnamento, pratica e approvvigionamento tecnico del circolo. A crearla, passione e ricordi di Alessandro Frigerio, Head Pro, figlio di Giancarlo, indimenticato e per 58 anni maestro al golf di Montorfano. Un campo pratica a due livelli: prima faccio qualche colpo al coperto, isolato dai bianchi séparé, poi salgo al piano rialzato, già proiettato nel verde e nel profumo del campo. Minuscoli puntini bianchi sul terreno che sale e si allontana testimoniano quanti prima di me hanno tentato con le loro palline le infinite possibilità del golf e dei suoi ferri. Qui si inizia a praticare questo sport, qui si inizia la gara salutando il compagno/avversario, qui non si finisce mai di imparare. I maestri ti correggono quella spalla troppo alta, quel piede troppo largo. Mogli o mariti si accomodano poco dietro per un raggio di sole o una bonaria critica. Tu capisci come andrà il tuo giro di campo. Il driving range rivela e propizia.

Here you start practicing this sport, here you start the race greeting your mate/opponent, here you never stop learning. The teachers will correct a shoulder kept too high, a foot set too wide. Wives or husbands follow up, always there for a ray of sunshine or some pieces of goodnatured criticism. Here you understand how your round will turn out today. cui cominciò la sua vita qui. “Ora il golf è ancora più bello, più democratico, più sportivo” osserva felice sorridendo del suo soprannome, il Panzeta, scelto dal dottor Rivetti tanti anni fa e accettato senza repliche. 1.400 lire per 18 buche era la tariffa dei caddies: ragazzi, ma anche molti adulti del posto che arrotondavano o lavoravano così.

E poi tante donne, vere manutentrici del campo: la scopa per togliere la rugiada, le forbici per tagliare le infestanti. Il campo una volta era più “rustico”, ma che salotto era la Club House. Una sera si ballò tutta la notte con l’intrattenimento di Gino Bramieri e Caterina Caselli e anche Ernesto Calindri, celebre attore dello spot Cynar, si rifugiò qui contro il logorio della vita moderna.

L’ospite, peraltro non golfista, che forse Sergio ama citare di più è però Christiaan Barnard, il medico sudafricano che fece il primo trapianto di cuore. Sergio ricorda tutti ma tutti si ricordano di lui, perfino all’Olgiata o al La Mandria, dove passò una vacanza premio. Perché aveva sempre un sorriso e una parola, una soluzione e una premura: sapeva addirittura dove un socio si trovava nel campo alla tal ora. E senza radioline.

Oggi Sergio è socio onorario del Golf Villa d’Este, il regalo del presidente Walter Ragazzi, reciproca riconoscenza per una vita spesa per il Golf.

l primato del Golf Villa d’Este nell’accoglienza si giustifica nella storia, lunga oltre 50 anni, di una persona speciale. Incontro Sergio Arcellaschi un tardo pomeriggio e prima di riuscire ad avvicinarlo devo aspettare che mezza sala ristorante lo abbia salutato. Sergio è stato il Caddie Master del Golf di Montorfano dal 1965 al 2015, ma fin da ragazzino ha portato sacche e accompagnato signori. Si ricorda ogni singola persona venuta a cercare le buche o la tranquillità di questo campo, che sia l’ingegner Gavazzi della Pirelli o il mitico Bing Crosby, che oltre a White Christmas sapeva cantare benissimo anche i suoni del golf (era Handicap 4). “In tutti questi anni Villa d’Este è sempre andato su, mai giù” afferma sicuro pur citando l’ardito passaggio di proprietà degli anni ’80, la concorrenza dei circoli milanesi, bergamaschi e piemontesi, il drammatico incendio del 1990. Lui e il numeroso personale del Golf Villa d’Este hanno sempre fatto in modo di far sentire a casa ospiti e soci, 7 giorni su 7. La stagione una volta era più corta: dal giorno di San Giuseppe, 19 marzo, alla festività dei Santi, 1 novembre. Poi si andò fino a Sant’Ambrogio e oggi Sergio può osservare come il numero di frequentatori del Golf Villa d’Este sia triplicato rispetto a quella Pasqua del 1954 in

he began his life here. “Now golf is even better, more democratic, more sporty,” he observes smiling happily at his nickname, the Panzeta (The Pot Belly), chosen by Dr. Rivetti many years ago and accepted without any complaint. Back then the caddies’ fee was 1,400 lire for 18 holes: kids, but also many local adults who worked here to make up their wages or as their main job. And many women, real keepers of the course: using brooms to remove the dew, scissors to cut weeds. The course was more “rustic” back then, but the Clubhouse was a real living room. One night the guests danced all night long entertained by Gino Bramieri and Caterina Caselli and even Ernesto Calindri, the famous actor of the Cynar commercial, took refuge here against the strain of modern life. The guest, though not a golfer himself, whom Sergio likes to quote the most is, however, Christiaan Barnard, the South African doctor who performed the first heart transplant. Sergio reminds everyone and everyone remembers him as well, even at L’Olgiata or at La Mandria, where he spent a holiday prize. Because he always had a smile and a kind word, a solution and a special care for everyone: He even knew the location of each club member on the course at any time. And without any portable radios. Today Sergio is an honorary member of the Golf Club Villa d’Este, the gift of President Walter Ragazzi, mutual gratitude for a life spent for Golf.

he primacy in reception & hospitality of the Golf Club Villa d’Este is well explained by the story, spanning over more than 50 years, of one special man.

I met Sergio Arcellaschi one late afternoon and before I could approach him I had to wait for half the guests in the restaurant to greet him. Sergio has been the Golf Caddie Master in Montorfano from 1965 to 2015, but since he was a kid he had been carrying golf bags and accompanying players along the course. He remembers every single person who came here looking for holes or for the peace of the course, may they be the Engineer Gavazzi from Pirelli or the legendary Bing Crosby, who in addition to White Christmas could also sing very well to the tunes of golf (he was a Handicap 4).

“Along all these years Villa d’Este has always gone up, never down” he says with certainty, while nevertheless citing the bold change of ownership of the ‘80s, the competition of the Milanese, Bergamo and Piedmont clubs, the dramatic fire of 1990. He and the large staff of the Golf Club Villa d’Este have always made their best to make guests and associates feel at home, seven days a week. The golf season was shorter then: from St. Joseph’s day, March 19, to the Holy Saints, November 1. Then the season was lengthened until St. Ambrogio’s day, December 7, and now Sergio can witness how the number of visitors to the Golf Club Villa d’Este has tripled compared to that Easter of 1954 when

Open d’Italia e Villa d’Este: il record delle dodici edizioni L

’Open d’Italia è uno dei tornei più antichi del Vecchio Continente. La prima edizione risale al settembre del 1925, venne giocata solo da William Jolly, Luigi Prette e Francesco Pasquali, che fu il primo a scrivere il proprio nome nel lungo e prestigioso albo d’oro. Il Circolo Golf Villa d’Este, nato l’anno dopo, fu subito il protagonista assoluto delle edizioni che hanno preceduto la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, con ben sei Open sui saliscendi di Montorfano. In totale queste buche lariane hanno ospitato addirittura 12 delle 72 edizioni della gara fin qui disputate, nessuno come loro. L’elenco dei vincitori degli Open è avaro per gli italiani, ma uno di loro nacque e si consacrò sul verde di Villa d’Este: Ugo Grappasonni, per 20 anni maestro al circolo, vinse la storica edizione del 1954 proprio sul campo di casa. Il torneo subì un periodo di sospensione, dal 1960 al 1971, ma alla ripresa divenne uno dei più importanti annoverando nel field tutti i più grandi campioni del Tour: Billy Casper, Tony Jacklin, Bernhard Langer, Severiano

Ballesteros, Greg Norman, José Maria Olazabal, Sam Torrance, Sandy Lyle e gli azzurri Baldovino Dassù e Massimo Mannelli. Il 1972 fu l’ultimo anno di un Open comasco, a Villa d’Este alzò le braccia al cielo Norman Wood. Con il nuovo millennio la gara ha magicamente assunto la connotazione di torneo portafortuna per campioni in erba. Ne sono conferma le vittorie di Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, Gonzalo Fernandez Castaño e Francesco Molinari, ultimo azzurro ad aver conquistato il titolo nel 2006. La 72^ edizione, disputata nel 2015 sul percorso del Golf Club Milano, all’interno del Parco di Monza, ha fatto registrare il maggior numero di spettatori nella storia dell’evento: quest’anno si replica, raddoppiando il montepremi che salirà a tre milioni di euro per arrivare a sette dal 2017. Questo è l’ultimo passo in una storia italiana, internazionale e anche un po’ comasca, il primo passo sulla lunga strada che porterà alla Ryder Cup del 2022, l’evento mondiale del golf, assegnato a Roma nell’entusiasmo generale.

The Italian Open and Villa d’Este: the record of the 12 editions

The Italian Open is one of the oldest tournaments

on the Old Continent. The first edition took place in September 1925 and was played only by William Jolly, Louis Prette and Francesco Pasquali, who was the first to write down his name in the long and prestigious Roll of Honour. The Golf Club Villa d’Este, founded a year later, was immediately the absolute protagonist of the editions that preceded the Second World War, with six Opens being held on the ups and downs of Montorfano. In total these holes hosted 12 of the total 72 tournament editions held so far. no other golf club in Italy can compare to this record. The list of winners of the Open is stingy with Italians, but one of them was born and consecrated on the green of Villa d’Este: Ugo Grappasonni, teacher at the club for 20 years, won the historic 1954 edition right on his home course The tournament suffered a suspension period, from 1960 to 1971, but after being recovered, it became one of the most important competitions, counting on the field all the greatest champions of the Tour: Billy Casper, Tony

Jacklin, Bernhard Langer, Severiano Ballesteros, Greg Norman, Jose Maria Olazabal, Sam Torrance, Sandy Lyle and the Italians Baldovino Dassù and Massimo Mannelli. 1972 was the last year that an Open was held in Como, resulting in the victory of Norman Wood. With the new millennium the Italian open has magically taken on the connotation of a lucky charm tournament for budding champions. This is confirmed by the victories of Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, Gonzalo Fernandez Castaño and Francesco Molinari, the last Italian to have won the title in 2006. The 72nd edition, held in 2015 on the course of the Golf Club Milano, inside the Monza Park, recorded the highest number of viewers in the history of this event. And this year again, doubling the prize pool that is going to be raised to three million Euros in 2016 and to seven by 2017. This is the latest step in story which is Italian, international and even partly of Como, the first step on the long road that will lead to the Ryder Cup in 2022, the global event of golf, awarded to Rome, much to everyone’s excitement.

Già, perché se i professionisti costruiscono le loro 18 buche d’oro agli Open, gli amateurs si forgiano del titolo agli Internazionali. Il Golf Club Villa d’Este sa come si fa a vincere e convincere, sa come si fa ad organizzare questo piccolo grande Open. Dal lontano 1932, 55 volte gli Internazionali d’Italia si sono disputati tra gli alberi e l’ombra della Club House comasca, segno di fiducia, prestigio, tradizione.

Dall’inglese Dewiel nel 1932, all’italiano Testa nel 2012: oltre 50 edizioni di sfide con rivelazioni e soddisfazioni. Tanti infatti i dilettanti che lo sono rimasti per poco, dovendo un filo della loro bravura anche all’erba di Montorfano: lo spagnolo Josè Maria Olazabal, vincitore nel 1983 e 1985, o lo svedese Henrik Stenson, primo fra tutti nel 1996, sono solo due illustri esempi. Ben 19 però i titoli conquistati dagli italiani a Villa d’Este, Luigi Luzzato per debuttare (1937), Francesco Testa per salutare (2012). E l’orgoglio di casa si tinge di rosa quando il circolo fa altrettanto colpo sull’organizzazione degli

Internazionali femminili: 42 edizioni con la mattatrice ma sempre elegante Ida Goldschmid, italiana a dispetto del cognome, sette volte la più brava. Con un calendario sempre più pieno e allungato, ora gli Internazionali, fissati a metà marzo, devono dirigersi verso lidi più caldi, come quelli della Sardegna, ma Villa d’Este non perde occasione per portare a sé il grande golf, dilettanti o professionisti, italiani o stranieri. Vivendo e aspettando le emozioni e i colpi da maestro del 90°, come non ricordare l’anniversario precedente, il 2006, in cui a sfidarsi nello Skin Game Telecom Italia furono niente meno che i 4 migliori giocatori d’Italia: Edoardo e Francesco Molinari, Emanuele Canonica e Costantino Rocca. Con una formula elettrizzante (un montepremi ad ogni buca), una destinazione benefica (“Un birdie per la vita”) e centinaia di spettatori, i quattro moschettieri hanno confermato una volta di più il valore di un campo che non passa mai di moda e che ora vive un nuovo presente, come dimostrano le giovanissime vittorie ai Campionati Italiani Match Play, premio e regalo dei 90 anni, e la voglia di richiamare pro e profani su quelle dune verdi.

olf gives a chance to all those who love it, may it be the victory of a Sunday match or the title of best amateur of Italy and Europe. Yeah, because if the professionals win their 18-hole gold at the Open, the amateurs fight for their title at the International.

The Golf Club Villa d’Este knows how to win and convince, knows how to organize this great little Open. Since 1932, the Italian International Championship have been played among the trees and the shades of this Como club 55 times, a sign of confidence, prestige, tradition. From an Englishman, Dewiel, in 1932, to an Italian, Testa, in 2012: More than 50 editions of challenges, full of revelations and great satisfactions. In fact, many amateurs, who have remained such just for a while, owe a little bit of their skills to the green lawn of Montorfano: the Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal, winner in 1983 and 1985, and the Swede Henrik Stenson, winner in 1996, are nothing but two prominent examples.

However, no less than 19 titles were won by Italians at Villa d’Este: Luigi Luzzatto was the first one (1937), Francesco Testa the last one (2012). And the pride of the house turns pink when the club is

equally successful in the organization of the Female International: 42 editions with the star performer and always elegant Ida Goldschmid, Italian despite her name, seven times the winner. With a calendar increasingly full and stretched, now the International, fixed in mid-March, should head for warmer shores, such as those of Sardinia, but Villa d’Este never fails to attract great golf, amateur or professional, Italian or foreign. Living and waiting for the emotions and the masterstrokes of the 90th anniversary, how could we forget the previous anniversary, in 2006, when those who competed in the Skins Game Telecom Italy were no less than Italy’s four best players: Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, Emanuele Canonica and Costantino Rocca. With an exciting formula (a money prize at each hole), a charity goal (“A birdie for life”) and hundreds of viewers, the four musketeers have confirmed once more the value of a course that never goes out of fashion and that is now living a new present, as evidenced by the very young victories in the Italian Championships Match Play, prize and gift of this 90th anniversary, and by the desire to attract to its green dunes both professionals and amateurs.

major più bello, eppure il Club Villa d’Este è riuscito a ricreare e a trasmettere quell’atmosfera. Nel 1998, infatti, il circolo di Montorfano ospitò il St. Andrews Trophy: competizione analoga alla Ryder, in cui la sfida si gioca tra il team anglo-irlandese e il resto d’Europa.

Niente americani insomma, ma la tradizione e lo spirito del golf animarono due giornate irripetibili, con addirittura la vittoria della squadra continentale che, fino a quel momento, aveva superato solo due volte i britannici. Tornando alla più famosa Ryder. Niente montepremi faraonici o assegni da capogiro: in palio solo onore e gloria. Stati Uniti contro Europa, dodici contro dodici, due team in rappresentanza di emisferi opposti per cultura e tradizioni si affrontano da una parte all’altra dell’oceano, su alcuni dei più rinomati percorsi del mondo, in quello che è considerato il terzo evento sportivo più seguito dopo Mondiali di Calcio e Olimpiadi. Tre gli italiani che fino ad oggi hanno avuto l’onore di far parte del team europeo: Costantino Rocca, con tre partecipazioni all’attivo, di cui due vincenti nel 1995 e 1997, Francesco Molinari con due successi (2010 e 2012) ed Edoardo Molinari, insieme al fratello nel 2010. Nel computo totale gli Stati Uniti vantano 25 vittorie su 40 match disputati ma solo due nelle ultime dieci edizioni. I successi europei dal 1979, anno dell’allargamento a tutti i giocatori continentali, sono invece 10 su 18 partecipazioni. Quest’anno la Ryder torna negli Stati Uniti, nel Minnesota, dove capitan Davis Love III cercherà dal 30 settembre al 2 ottobre di riportare la coppa a casa. Nel 2018 toccherà poi a Parigi l’onore di essere la seconda sede non britannica dopo Valderrama a ospitare l’evento in Europa, prima della storica e attesissima edizione italiana, in programma nel 2022 al Marco Simone di Roma. Una nuova entusiasmante pagina di storia è ormai pronta per essere scritta, l’ennesimo capitolo di un’appassionate saga in cui la parola fine non è contemplata.

The Old World and the New World: A challenge for the Glory N

othing compares to the Ryder Cup, not even the most beautiful majors, and yet the Golf Club Villa d’Este was able to recreate and to transmit that same atmosphere. In 1998, in fact, the Montorfano club hosted the St. Andrews Trophy: a competition similar to the Ryder, where the challenge is between the Anglo-Irish team and the rest of Europe. No American players admitted, but the tradition and the spirit of golf animated two unforgettable days, crowned by the victory of the Continental team that, until then, had exceeded the British only twice.

Returning to the more famous Ryder, no huge prize or big fat checks: the odds at stake are just honor and glory. US against Europe, twelve to twelve, two teams representing two opposite hemispheres, different for culture and traditions, facing each other on both sides of the ocean, on some of the most famous courses in the world, in what is considered the third most popular sport event after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics. The Ryder Cup, a biennial contest between the Old and the New World born in 1927 thanks to a brilliant idea by Samuel Ryder, clever English businessman and avid golfer, is an event that draws together all the best that this game can express. Team spirit, the pride of representing one’s own country, the satisfaction of being part of the Gotha of world golf, all of this immersed in the atmosphere of a stadium magically recreated on a golf course: a curious mix,

unprecedented as well as unique, enhanced by the spectacular game formula of the match play. Thanks to the explosion of the first large non-British talents such as the unforgettable Severiano Ballesteros, in 1979 the Great Britain and Ireland team gave way to Europe, leading to even more exciting editions. All the biggest names in golf history have faced each other in epic challenges. Until now, three Italians have had the honor of being part of the European team: Costantino Rocca, who participated three times, including two victories, in 1995 and 1997; Francesco Molinari with two victories (2010 and 2012) and Edoardo Molinari, together with his brother in 2010.

In total, the United States can boast 25 victories out of 40 matches played, but only two in the last ten editions. The European successes since 1979, the year of the enlargement to all continental players, are 10 out of 18. This year the Ryder Cup returns to the US, to Minnesota, where Captain Davis Love III will try from September 30 to October 2 to bring the cup home. Then in 2018 Paris will have the honor of being the second non-British seat after Valderrama to host the event in Europe, before the historic and long-awaited Italian edition, scheduled in 2022 at the Marco Simone in Rome. An exciting new page in the history of golf is now ready to be written, the latest chapter of a thrilling saga in which the word “The End” is not contemplated.

i sono voluti 112 anni per rivedere il golf alle Olimpiadi.

Toccherà alla 31ma edizione di Rio de Janeiro riprendere il filo di un discorso molto breve e interrotto oltre un secolo fa, per verificare se il Gioco dei Re sarà a suo agio anche sotto la bandiera con i cinque cerchi. Le uniche due edizioni che videro il golf assegnare medaglie, anche in modo assai pittoresco, vennero disputate nel 1900 a Parigi e nel 1904 a St. Louis, negli Stati Uniti. Nella prima i partecipanti furono 22 (12 uomini e dieci donne), appartenenti a quattro nazioni: Grecia, Gran Bretagna, U.S.A. e Francia. Gli americani vinsero le tre medaglie femminili e quella d’oro fra gli uomini (campioni olimpici risultarono Margaret Abbott e Charles Sands).

A St. Louis scesero in campo 77 golfisti (tutti uomini e statunitensi, con l’eccezione di tre canadesi) e a differenza di quattro anni prima, quando si erano giocati solo due giri da 18 buche, dopo un turno di qualificazione si disputò un torneo con la formula match play - cioè con un tabellone simile a quello del tennis - con sedicesimi, ottavi, quarti, semifinali e finale. Il canadese George Lyon beffò tutti gli statunitensi e conquistò il terzo oro nella storia del golf.

Gli americani, però, si rifecero con la gara a squadre, nella quale vinsero a mani basse tutte le medaglie. In realtà non fu troppo difficile, visto che i tre team premiati erano ciascuno composto da 11 giocatori statunitensi.

Reintrodotto ai Giochi estivi nel 2009 durante la sessione del CIO di Copenhagen, il golf disputerà la gara maschile dall’11 al 14 agosto e quella femminile dal 17 al 20. La formula sarà quella classica oggi utilizzata nei vari circuiti professionistici, che consiste in quattro giri di campo da 18 buche. Per ospitare la gara è stato realizzato un percorso ad hoc, a Reserva de Marapendi, nella zona di Barra de Tijuca, che si trova una trentina di chilometri a ovest di Rio de Janeiro. Il disegno è stato affidato all’americano Gil Hanse e dopo le Olimpiadi l’impianto diventerà un campo aperto al pubblico, destinato a promuovere il golf in Brasile. In campo si affronteranno 60 giocatori e altrettante giocatrici, scelti in base a complessi criteri, fra i migliori delle classifiche mondiali alla data del prossimo 11 luglio. In base alla situazione di fine maggio, l’Italia potrebbe essere rappresentata da Francesco Molinari, Giulia Sergas e Giulia Molinaro.

It took 112 years to see the golf once again included in

the Olympics. It’s up to the 31st edition of Rio de Janeiro to pick up the thread of a very short speech, interrupted more than a century ago, and see if the Kings’ Game will be at ease even under the Five Rings Flag. The only two editions that saw medals awarded for golf, also in a very picturesque fashion, were those played in 1900 in Paris and in 1904 in St. Louis, in the United States. The participants of the first edition were twenty-two (twelve men and ten women), coming from just four countries: Greece, Great Britain, U.S. and France. The Americans won all three female medals and one gold among men (Margaret Abbott and Charles Sands became the Olympic champions). In St. Louis 77 golfers entered the course (all men and from the US, with the exception of three Canadians) and unlike four years before, when they had played only two rounds of 18 holes, this time, after a qualifying round, they played a tournament with match play formula - that is, with a board similar to that of tennis - with last-32, last-16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final. Canadian George Lyon fooled all the Americans and won the third gold in the history of golf. The Americans, however, got even with the team competition, in which they won hands down all the medals. Actually it was not too difficult, since all the three winning teams were composed of 11 US players. Reintroduced at the Summer Games in 2009 during the IOC Session in Copenhagen, at the 2016 Olympics golf will see the men’s competition held from 11 to 14 August and the female one from 17 to 20.

The formula will be the classic one now used in various professional circuits, consisting of four rounds of 18 holes.

In order to host the race, organizers have built an ad hoc path, Reserva de Marapendi, in Barra de Tijuca area, located about thirty kilometers west of Rio de Janeiro.

The design was entrusted to the American Gil Hanse and after the Olympics the facility will become a course open to the public, intended to promote golf in Brazil. 60 male players will face each other on the course and 60 female players will do the same, selected on the basis of complex criteria, among the best in the world rankings as of next July 11. According to the rank at the end of May, Italy could be represented by Francesco Molinari, Giulia Sergas and Giulia Molinaro.

“ otevi dargli un po’ di forza a quel put!”, “Hai visto che birdie alla 18?” “Oggi proprio non era giornata”: negli spogliatoi sono confessioni e sentenze. Poi sali nel salone e sono saluti e novità.

chiacchiere, di gusto, di celebrazione. La ghiaia scricchiola sotto i miei piedi, l’ingresso anticipa i colori della grande casa ma nasconde tutta la sua estensione. Il personale della segreteria mi aspetta e mi saluta sorridente. Non faccio in tempo a chiedermi dove lasciare la mia sacca, dove potermi rinfrescare, che loro mi hanno già scaricato i ferri e indicato bar e spogliatoi. “L’accoglienza è nel nostro Dna” mi spiega il direttore, Andrea Contigiani, evocando l’origine del circolo quale

sportiva estensione del più lussuoso albergo del Lago di Como e l’inevitabile cura dell’ospite che è rimasta negli anni. “Il nostro lavoro è capire in anticipo le esigenze del socio, del turista, del campione e soddisfarle. Servirli nel modo più semplice: standogli vicino”, continua nel modo più naturale Andrea. Le vetrate in corridoio mi permettono di sbirciare nel patio da una parte e nella sala da bridge dall’altra. Chi legge il giornale, chi guarda in tv il Master o la Formula

1, chi sorseggia aperitivo o spizzica parole. “È la loro seconda casa - sorride il direttore - anzi, per qualcuno è anche la prima”. Dei soci conosce la più nascosta abitudine. L’ampia terrazza mi svela il campo, il bar mi carica con un caffè, il ristorante mi tenta ancor prima di iniziare a giocare. Scendo le scale, neanche gli spogliatoi sono semplici stanze: scrigni di legno più che armadietti, morbidi teli più che asciugamani.

finalmente l’eleganza dell’ambiente lascia spazio all’emozione dello scenario. E del gioco. Ma ho bisogno della mia sacca. Marco il caddie master e Massimo, l’hanno subito trovata tra le circa 400 che popolano l’ordinato deposito, ognuna al suo posto, ognuna linda, come nuova. La Club House si allunga dal tee della buca 1 al green della 18, in mezzo naturalmente il passaggio dalle prime alle seconde buche, il putting green e poco distante il driving range. Nel moto ondoso del Villa

d’Este, la sua casa non poteva che dominare tutto, sovrastare la sensazione di sollievo, soddisfazione e rammarico per aver finito ancora una volta quel giro di campo. Ma la Club House aspetta, accoglie, riempie il golf, le feste, le premiazioni, un sabato in compagnia: confortevoli le sue poltrone in velluto verde e bordeaux, lucide le boiserie e le targhe lignee dei vincitori, evocatrici le stampe alle pareti. E quello stemma, dipinto enorme sul camino, come se ce ne fosse bisogno,

ci ricorda che siamo nel tempio dell’eleganza.

The Clubhouse of the Golf Club Villa d’Este is full of life, golf and friendship, shining with splendor and elegance, respecting the mission for which it was created: hospitality. Each room has its moment, every corner its comfort: the Clubhouse is a point of departure, arrival and rest, a place for talking, tasting and celebrating. The gravel creaks under my feet; the entrance anticipates the colors of the big house, hiding its sheer size. The Secretariat staff is waiting for me and greets me with a smile. I do not have the time to wonder where I should leave my bag, where I could refresh, that they have already unloaded my clubs and shown me to the bar and the changing rooms. “Hospitality is in our DNA,” explains the director, Andrea Contigiani, evoking

the origin of the golf club as a sport extension of the most luxurious hotel of Lake Como and the traditional care of the guest that has remained a core feature over the years.

The stained glass windows in the hallway allow me to peek into the patio on one side and into the bridge room on the other side. Someone reads the newspaper, someone watches the Master or Formula 1 on TV, someone is sipping an aperitif or having a chat. “It’s their second home - smiles the director - indeed, for someone maybe the first”. He knows even the most hidden habits of each member. The large terrace reveals to me the course, the bar gives me an energy boost with a good coffee, the restaurant tempts me even before I start playing. I go down the stairs, not even the changing rooms are just simple rooms: wooden

chests more than lockers, fluffy cloths more than towels. I open the door to the outside: finally, I am here where the elegance of the building gives way to the emotion of the landscape. And of the game. But I need my bag. Marco the caddy master and Massimo, they find it immediately among about 400 other bags that populate the orderly storage, each one in its place, each one neat, like new. The Club House extends from the tee of hole 1 to the green of the 18; in-between of course I will find the transition from the first to the second hole, the putting green and the driving range. Among the waves of the Villa d’Este, its house could only dominate the place, overlooking us in the moment of relief, satisfaction and regret for having completed once again this round of golf. But the Clubhouse awaits, welcomes, fills golf, festivals, awards, a Saturday in good company: Its comfortable armchairs in green and burgundy velvet, the polished wood paneling and the wooden plates of the winners, the evocative prints

on the walls. And the coat of arms, under the form of a huge painting over the fireplace, reminds us, just in case we needed it, that here we are in the temple of elegance.
