WORKPLACE DESIGN Fourth Year | 6 Weeks | Individual NEXT is a global architecture and interior design firm with a new branch office located in Dallas, Texas. By placing importance and attention on the meaningful work being done at the office, the design process is romanticized. The space encompasses all of its users by capitalizing on the act of display - showcasing not only the work being done, but also the people who create it.

This office creates meaningful artistic experiences within the workplace by showcasing the art of making. In this circumstance, the “performers” are the designers, the “stage” is the workstations/offices, the “expression” is their designs, and the “observers” are the clients.

With the “observers” experience in mind, the space is organized to create “viewing platforms” which showcase the work being done from an elevated perspective. Upon entering, the clients and guests are welcomed into the reception area with immediate access to the stairway reaching the mezzanine floor. Pathways are constructed to create a “journey” across the workspace while showcasing the designer and the design process. This forces viewers to notice and thus become a part of the design process in order to reach the client presentation room where finalized products will be discussed.

“Journey” across the workspace

Workspace and offices are purposely left neutral in color and texture to allow the work on display to be perceived to its fullest potential. As a result, a vibrant shade of red was chosen for select areas where the design process will not be influenced. This creates an impactful and colorful space, while remaining limited in presence of the shade.

Various office layouts are presented to offer diversity in working styles and preferences. All layouts include acoustic cork wall tiles that also serve as pinup space, acoustic wall covering, carpeted flooring, guest seating, and components of the STEELCASE | Currency Desk System.

NCB PROJECT BASED LEARNING Third Year | 5 Weeks | Group THE NEW CLASSROOM BUILDING at Virginia Tech was designed to be a stateof-the-art facility that provides a modern and comfortable learning environment for students. The classrooms are equipped with the latest technology, including smart boards, high-speed internet, and video conferencing equipment. This proposed redesign of the first floor classroom and immediate flex space offers a combination of task and relaxed zones to more appropriately meet the needs of students and faculty. Imagining spaces as focused and intermission areas, the design offers variety in choice.

The seating options in the classroom are not preferred. The Essay Chair is bulky and uncomfortable and students are constantly bumping into one another. They are also difficult to fit under the tables when class is dismissed.
Most students enjoy the solitude and come to work alone.
Students spend an average of 1-2 hours in the facility, typically in the time btween classes.
Intigrated technology is the primary reason studnets choose to work in the NCB space. However, both the classroom and flex space lack access to power outlets.

INTERMISSION OF CONCENTRATION Envisioning spaces where users can breakaway and regenerate in the time in between classes. Comfortable and focused areas foster a relaxed yet productive work place.

The flex space acts as an intermission or interlude where users can regenerate in between classes while maintaining focus. Forming an organic path, the two curved walls shape the space and act as a natural wayfinding tool.
The reinvisioned Viccarbe Aleta serves as a task chair accustomed to a learning environment. Design of the backrest offers space for a backpack to hang and armrests for comfort and full 360 degree rotation.
Specific furniture consideration around the observed postures and uses for each zone of the flex space allow for an accentuated user experience. Focusing on specific ergonomic quality in the lounge zone include a fully relaxed posture and deep seated lounge chairs.
The completely custom Wedge Table specified for classroom settings allows for multiple reconfigurations that accommodate various classroom settings.
The reinvisioned Viccarbe Brix serves as a task lounge seating option. Focusing on human ergonomics and applying a 20-30 degree angle to the seat puts the user in a reclined position for a more relaxed, focused setting. The writable surfaces located on both arms and an electrical power outlet make it convenient for simple task work.

The classroom consists of fully mobile tables and chairs that can be rearranged for different learning experiences. Custom built tables offer both group and lecture style seating options.

Screens throughout the classroom are utilized with different seating arrangements. By placing screens all around the classroom space, student always have visual access to the shown material, regardless of where they are sitting.

UNIVERSITY BRANCH LIBRARY Third Year | 6 Weeks | Individual Daydream is an academic branch library located just off of Arizona State Univerity’s Tempe Campus. Taking inspiration for dreamscape design and artificial architecture, the library provides a space prompting deep mental involvement but in a dreamlike reality. Abstract extremes, inventive forms, and traditional collection methods create a dynamic environment for self study and intellectual development.

Located in the ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus, this futuristic academic library targets the open mindedness of university students and local residents among the art district. South Maple Ave is situated in the middle of the Downtown Art District and just minutes away from the Tempe Campus.

I MME R SI VE dream state Designed for the Ambitious The branch library is a dreamlike space encapsulating its users in an imaginative state of actuality. By offering limitless outlets for discovery where every person can build their own reality with different uses, needs, and interpretations of the shared space, one may dive into a deeper state of focus and exploration.

Softened forms situated throughout the space are characterized by an appearance of deceiving gravity. The perception of floatation is interpreted through an abundance of featureless surfaces with variable lighting effects and techniques, as well as differing offsets of the massive forms. This offers a light and airy expression contradicting the heavy identity of the structures.

Application of tone on tone plaster finishes and reflective surfaces produce a concentration inducing environment where users are persuaded to stay on task. Rounded edges and softened geometry create fluidity and serenity among the space while maintaining an abstract and imaginary domain. 19
Suspended light fixtures add focal lighting to the group study zones while also increasing acoustic value with low hanging felt strads to absorb sound.
Monochromatic furnishings with soft materials keep the space consistent while creating pops against the ‘blank green canvas’. Perspective from Exiting Elevator 2.

Intended to be installed with double glass panels, the collections area will provide a sound absorbing zone for individual quiet reading. Comfortable lounge seating centered in the floor to ceiling book stacking with glistening lighting effects offers a stimulating and thought-provoking environment for personal discovery.

ART EXHIBITION Second Year | 4 Weeks | Individual The Drip Never Stops is an art exhibition designed to evoke strong emotion in viewers and in return create action. Centralized around the crucial and very widely known issue of climate change, the exhibit offers an impactful and thought provoking experience by imposing a psychological sense of anticipation and anxiety. Located in the Virginia Tech Armory building downtown, this exhibition is vastly accessible to many different types of audiences.

TOLERANCE TOWARDS INACTION Designed to inspire viewers to react and take action towards relieving climate change and the impact we, as humans, have on the earth. The goal is not to bring awareness but to evoke emotion and encourage action in the viewers by creating a space where the sound of passing time is inescapable. Floor Plan NTS
The exhibition creates tension in the viewers by producing a sense of urgency with the large scale climate clock that is always within sight of the observers. With every passing ten seconds a singular drop is released to fall into the center display. The carafe is designed to hold every drop until the clock reaches zero, when the estimated time until global warming conditions become too severe for human life to be maintained on earth is up.

Acoustical control is a very crucial element in the design of the exhibition space. A domed ceiling plane is installed to aid in the spread of sound produced by the center display. In turn, the leftover ceiling plane influenced the shaping of the exhibition area to create a harmonious flow throughout the space. 23
