UPCYCLED NOTEBOOK made from trash
UPCYCLED NOTEBOOK made from trash Design Brief:
Spend a week collecting non-organic waste from as you go about your everyday life. Redesign that trash into a new useful product.
Outcome:
A pocketsize notebook made of milkjug cartons, cereal boxes and envelopes.
THE PROBLEM An escalating issue in modern society is waste management. The lack of awareness from the general public about where their waste goes leads to under-regulated landfills where toxic leachates and methane emissions adversely affect the environment. Sustainable design can change the world we live in. By designing useful products from our waste materials, we can give materials a second life and lessen the load on waste reclaiming systems.

Design Brief:
In a team, design and make an exhibition booth furniture set from upcycled cardboard. It must include a modular wall system, table and chair.
Outcome:
A module capable of creating each required furniture piece and more. It requires no glue or fasteners. Modules made from 3mm thick cardboard can bear loads of at least 80kg.
THE PROBLEM Design:Made:Trade is a Melbourne based trade show which showcases fashion, furniture, textile, graphic and industrial design brands. They are a sustainability-orientated organization and have partnered with VISY and Monash University to create environmentally friendly upcycled booths from VISY’s offcut and waste cardboards.
IDEATION Our team of 4 split off to each come up with 10 individual ideas and mockups of potential mechanisms that can be used in building the furniture set.
DEVELOPMENT Development on the ‘endcap’ piece which served to mechanically secure modules together and provide a flat surface for comfortable chair seating and table tops.
REFINEMENT Refining dimensions by considering: - material efficient dimensions - strenght/loading testing - manufacturing constraints - ease of manufacturing strategy

OWL SPINRING 3d-printed fidget toy

ring
OWL SPINRING 3d-printed fidget toy Design Brief:
Design a useful product which can be downloaded and printed with home 3d object printers.
Outcome:
Owl spinring, a discrete fidget toy to serve as a discrete fidget outlet. Features a spinning head and body. Scalable design and manufacture by 3d-printing ensures perfect fit for all finger sizes.
THE PROBLEM Some people naturally and unconsciously fidget. Fidgeting can manifest in habits like finger tapping, leg bouncing, playing with hair, small objects and clothing. Fidgeting can be effective in decreasing stress, and promoting focus and concentration. However, fidgeting can be distracting or annoying to others. Fidgety people find it helpful to keep a fidget toy: a small object that can be unobtrusively carried around and fidgeted with.
Why an owl?
– a whimsical take o n the fact t hat owls c an t urn their heads up to 270 degrees; essentially being able to look over their own shoulder.
PROCESS This was a one week project which involved: - quick thumbail sketches - 3d modelling in solidworks - printing a prototype using a RepRap 3d printer

Design Brief:
Make a complex model with 3 mechanisms. Apply skills learned in model making class.
Outcome:
TOYKAM, the rotund camera. Features an over-sized lens, “flash”bulb, rivets, rotating clicking sidearms, rotating extendable “zoom” lens mechanism and leather strap for carrying.
X-MINI HUB conceptual speaker proposal
X-MINI HUB conceptual speaker proposal Design Brief:
XMI (creators of the red-dot award winnng X-mini speaker) approached Monash University students to come up with the next speaker for their product line.
Outcome:
The X-mini hub concept: a music hub for multiple users when out-and-about. This proposal was selected as the winning concept by client company XMI.
RESEARCH The company and brand The company slogan is: ‘sound beyond size’ and prides itself in producing pocketsize speakers of excellent sound quality. XMI designs speakers that feature a pop-up expandable body. The innovative accordian design enhances bass by allowing more airflow through the speakers. This acoordian feature should be carried forward and emphasized in future family products.
CURRENT PRODUCT LINE:
x-mini capsule v1 - pocketsize monospeaker
x-mini capsule v1.1 - added cap to protect the speaker driver
x-mini max - stereo speaker
x-mini max II - sleeker design
x-mini happy - sd card slot
x-mini rave - fm/am radio
RESEARCH Observing users By researching how and when customers used their current x-mini speakers, opportunties to improve the current product range were found. The majority used their speaker when doing activities with friends - such as skating at the park or sitting together for lunch. It was discovered a desireable feature to users would be the ability to share a speaker and create a combined playlist from music stored on all of their friends’ devices.

FOOD MENTOR augmented reality kitchen headset
FOOD MENTOR augmented reality kitchen headset Design Brief:
ELECTROLUX DESIGN LAB 2012 COMPETITION Electrolux invited students to design home appliance concepts that provide a fuller snesory experience which will shape how people prepare and store food, clean and do their dishes, both within and beyond the home.
Outcome:
Food Mentor: an augmented reality kitchen tool. The headset projects images directly onto the human retina, creating a luxury augmented reality synesthesia-like experience. The device encourages people to have authentic dining experiences by foraging and preparing their own food.
RESEARCH
Gathering consumer insight Discovering user frustrations associated with cooking led to insights on what Electrolux’s next product could do to ease the cooking process for users.
ADDRESSING PAIN POINTS
What are common cooking frustrations and inhibitions? How do we overcome them? “I don’t know HOW to cook that!” “Recipe ingredients are always out of season.” “I don’t know WHAT to cook.” “I want to stay on diet.” “I don’t like washing the dishes, it’s no fun.” “I don’t like cooking by myself while guests wait.”
A cooking tutor can help with that We need a data base of ingrediets which are in season Suggest healthy eating options based on dietary requirements Nutritional information tracking We can turn washing up into a game Social cooking: Let’s get others involved in the cooking process

GOOGLE MIRROR portal device
GOOGLE MIRROR portal device Design Summary:
This device takes video, audio and touch screen recording of users, flips the video and presents it onto another device. As a result, people can see each other underlaying their shared workspace, allowing people to interact on a higher level as they can see facial expressions, hand guestures and body language of those they interact with.
THE PROBLEM As the world becomes increasingly globalised, more people from different countries are connecting and collaborating to achieve goals they previously could not. However, current digital methods feel unintuitive and disjointed so users feel the need to travel around the world in order to communicate effectively. If digital communication could be as effective as face-to-face interaction: a lot of time, fuel energy and money could be saved.
A BETTER CONCEPT OF DIGITAL INTERACTION Projecting live visuals of users onto a shared digital workspace can simulate face-to-face interaction as it allows users to:
- see their collaborator and read their facial expressions, body language and tone. - quickly understand what their collaborator is looking and pointing at - achieve eyecontact and follow each other’s eye gaze - achieve and monitor natural turn taking during coversations
