Three New Programs Respond to Industry Demand
In 2023, Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering announced three new academic options in Embedded Systems, Cloud Engineering, and Hypersonics. Potential students can now apply for the Professional Master of Engineering or the Graduate Certificate in Engineering in Embedded Systems or Cloud Engineering or the Graduate Certificate in Engineering in Hypersonics and may complete their coursework in-person at the University of Maryland campus in College Park, MD, online from anywhere in the world, or a hybrid of both methods of delivery, ensuring MAGE’s commitment to delivering a worldclass education to working engineers all across the world.
The CLOUD ENGINEERING curriculum at MAGE covers cost efficiency, resource utilization, industry ecosystem, role of cloud in the enterprise, and driving business value using cloud technology, as well as the three cloud models: Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). “The Cloud Engineering programs offered by MAGE are a great way to acquire a deep understanding of cloud-based information and software systems,” says Dr. Zoltan Safar, director of the Master’s in Telecommunications Program. “Students will get a chance to learn the fundamentals of cloud technologies, including various system virtualization technologies, the Linux operating system, SQL and no-SQL databases and develop solid coding skills using the Python language. The elective courses will allow for further specialization in cloud security, machine learning, software engineering or internet of things (IoT), depending on individual interest. The program will prepare students for a career in positions such as cloud system architect, cloud engineer, DevOps engineer, and cloud application developer.” Cloud engineers build and maintain cloud infrastructure, on-demand computer system resources, most commonly data storage and computing power, of which the hardware is not directly maintained by the user. The curriculum covers cost efficiency, resource utilization, industry ecosystem, role of cloud in the enterprise, and driving business value using cloud technology. “More and more companies and organizations are realizing the benefits of moving their computing services to the cloud, which precipitates the need for an educated workforce of cloud engineers to design and maintain these systems,” says Dr. George Syrmos. “MAGE is excited to help meet this new demand for trained cloud engineers by offering degrees that go beyond the basics of information technology and delve into the complex distinctions that we see in this growing field.”

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS at MAGE explores the design and optimization of embedded software, embedded hardware, and networking and distributed systems. “As demand grows exponentially for complex government and industrial installations with embedded systems, as well as an expanding market of consumer electronics with dedicated computer systems, we also see an increased demand for trained engineers to design, optimize, and maintain these systems,” says Dr. George Syrmos, Assistant Dean for Continuing Education. “Our new program in Embedded Systems will equip working professionals with the knowledge and skills to forge exciting, new pathways within this growing discipline.” Also referred to as the Internet of Things, or IoT, embedded systems are computer systems contained inside of a larger mechanical or electronic system with a dedicated function. Embedded systems come in varying sizes, from smartwatches to refrigerators to spacecrafts, range from very simple to very complex, and may operate independently or as part of a larger network. “This is a cutting edge program. Look around at the systems we rely on everyday: your smart fridge, your Tesla, your tv are all embedded systems. The skill level needed to develop and build these systems is complex and intricate, ” says Dr. Ankur Srivastava, Professor and Director of the Institute for Systems Research.
The Graduate Certificate in Engineering in HYPERSONICS is offered in partnership with the Department of Aerospace Engineering, one of the nation’s leading aerospace programs. Students gain a deep understanding of the key principles relevant to the flight of high-speed vehicles and projectiles in the atmosphere and are introduced to crucial concepts in areas such as hypersonic aerodynamics, high-speed airbreathing propulsion, high-temperature structures and materials, and high-speed guidance, navigation and control. The certificate prepares students for careers in hypersonics-related fields in both the commercial and government sectors. With close proximity to several federally funded institutions and labs that have a critical interest in hypersonic technology—the Naval Air and Surface Warfare Centers, the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Naval Research Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving Ground, and AEDC Hypervelocity Tunnel 9—the university is perfectly positioned to offer the only graduate certificate in engineering in hypersonics in the area. As with all MAGE academic options, the new specializations are designed for working engineers, with flexible class schedules and practical, hands-on instruction from faculty at the forefront of their field.
With the additions of Embedded Systems, Cloud
