Samuel Graham, Jr. became dean of the Clark School on Oct. 1 after serving as the Eugene C. Gwaltney Jr. Chair of the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

A recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, he serves on the advisory board of the Engineering Science Research Foundation of Sandia National Laboratories and the Emerging Technologies Technical Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Commerce. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations.

I’m a first-generation college student who grew up in a military family. I was born in Heidelberg, Germany, and lived in Stuttgart for some of my childhood.

After moving back to the U.S., I grew up primarily in the Southeast—South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida—and lived in Texas and California. I’ve called Atlanta home for the past 18 years. We’ve made a family enterprise out of engineering; my wife Shalonda and I have two children studying to be engineers (Camryn to be a biomedical engineer, and Sheldon an aerospace engineer).

Divyam Garg MOTION PLANNING ENGINEER, THORDRIVE M.ENG. ROBOTICS

Divyam Garg chose to pursue a Master of Engineering in Robotics with MAGE to take advantage of the facilities and resources that the University of Maryland had to offer as well as the practical skills that he would leave MAGE with. In the Fall, he graduated from MAGE with a promising new career ahead of him.

Garg enrolled in the Robotics program at MAGE, but took advantage of MAGE’s independent research course to gain some interdisciplinary knowledge. He chose to do his independent research with Professor Michael Otte in the Aerospace department. The freedom and flexibility of independent research, as well as the option to take electives outside of Robotics, allowed Garg to tailor-fit his degree to the career he chose to pursue.

University of Maryland has immense resources and great infrastructure. It really gives me the campus life I desire.

The robotics program here is especially good and a lot of intense and collaborative research work is always going on in fields like perception, micro robotics, autonomous robots and much more, so all of this happening in one place gives me a good way to explore my interests.

Working as a teaching assistant during his time with MAGE also gave Garg valuable skills beyond base robotics knowledge. Garg was a teaching assistant for a course on autonomous robots, assisting the other students in the class. Learning the material well enough to then teach it to others elevated his knowledge to new levels and showed him new ways to approach problems. Plus, having to give lectures “instilled confidence in me,” says Garg. He says that his enhanced speaking skills and confidence to lead others “helped land a very nice internship.”

While finishing up his studies at MAGE, Garg began an internship at ThorDrive, an autonomous technology company that seeks to expand self-driving vehicles to markets beyond passenger cars and commercial trucks.

At ThorDrive, Garg optimizes existing motion planning algorithms, incorporating a new package for decision makers using a finite state machine. He also implemented an extended kalman filter onto the jittering LiDAR segmentation boxes.

Although Garg acknowledges that the past few months of learning online because of COVID-19 restrictions were, “definitely challenging due to not being able to work collectively with peers,” he says that, “enough resources were provided by MAGE, and the instructors were really supportive.”

After graduating in December, Garg looks forward to continuing as a motion planning engineer at ThorDrive, where he says he has “learnt a lot and is still learning.”

Sneha Aravind SECURITY ARCHITECT, COMCAST M.ENG. CYBERSECURITY

Family, work, home life, and balancing it all—our busy lives put so many hurdles between us and bettering ourselves, turning an already challenging run into an obstacle course. Sneha Aravind considered how much support she would need from a university when she decided to pursue her Master of Engineering degree in Cybersecurity at the University of Maryland and Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering.

After working for more than a decade in the telecom industry, Aravind looked to the booming security industry for a new challenge.

But, she says, “I had a part-time job to hold down, a toddler to watch, and a house to manage,” and adding graduate coursework to all of that would be tough.

Picking a graduate school, though, was an easy decision.

“Choosing MAGE was not tough because the University of Maryland is highly regarded and valued. MAGE’s well-structured curriculum, which is not just for students, but also for working professionals, made it my top choice,” says Aravind.

At MAGE, Aravind found courses designed with working professionals in mind. Aravind attended classes on campus while recordings of the lectures were available to view immediately or later on her own time, either to cover material she may have missed or as a way to review what she had already learned.

Outside of the classroom, Aravind also took advantage of conferences, career fairs, site visits, alumni talks, and even a game of capture the flag.

Aravind graduated with a Master of Engineering in Cybersecurity in 2019 and now works as a Security Architect at Comcast, where she conducts Threat Model workshops and consults on Secure Design.

This year, Comcast nominated Aravind, as part of

“Their main objective is to engage, develop, and advance all women in InfoSec, IT Risk Management, and Privacy Industries,” Aravind says of EWF, which is in it’s 19th year. As part of the theme for this year’s EWF, “Securing the Digital Ecosystem,” Aravind submitted and had her abstract chosen by workshop organizers. As a contributor, she led a workshop titled, “Sooner the Better: Threat Modeling Workshop.”

Next up, Aravind will travel to India to give a talk on the importance of mentorship at the Data Security Council of India conference.

On top of traveling the world to present at conferences, Aravind is a council member for Comcast DE&I, volunteering at empowering women events, counseling students, networking with other teams within Comcast Cybersecurity, and making handmade cards that go to senior citizens and school children.

“Representation matters in the classroom, in science, and in technology,” says Tony Barber, who—as a Black professor of engineering—both embodies that representation and champions for it and for others, inside and outside of the classroom.

Barber admits that diversity is not a topic commonly taught in engineering coursework: “We typically teach the foundation of engineering science and what it takes to perform in particular technical subject areas.” But at Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering, where he teaches quality engineering and design of experiments, and model-based systems engineering through the Institute for Systems Research, Barber makes a conscious choice to impart to his students what he calls “the three E’s”—education, experience, and exposure.

Education provides foundational knowledge, and experience is knowledge gained by working in the field. The third, exposure, is knowledge acquired by seeing how others approach and solve problems, and what education and experience they bring to the table. Barber says he seeks to “level-set” the

knowledge gained through exposure so that students from all backgrounds, educations, and experiences have the tools needed for success.

“It’s like a pure form of creativity,” Barber says of designing and building engineering solutions, “but if you don’t see anything other than the same

In addition to encouraging new and improved engineering solutions, Barber is a role model to other Black engineers who are just starting out in their careers. “I continue to give back by mentoring a lot of folks that look like me so that they can see that they can achieve just like I achieved.” Barber

Steven Mitchell MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FACULTY

When the University of Maryland moved to online, distanced learning to protect its students and the community from the spread of COVID-19, many faculty and students struggled to adjust. One faculty member who successfully rose to the challenge is Professor Steven Mitchell.

Mitchell teaches ENPM 809T: Special Topics in Engineering; Autonomous Robotics for Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering. A relatively new class, ENPM 809T was created and first taught by Mitchell in summer 2019.

“One of my main interests is autonomous vehicles,” says Mitchell. When it came to designing the format of ENPM 809T, Mitchell sought to teach hardware and software for basic robotics simultaneously.

Students first review the theory of robotics and then move right into building their own robots using a Raspberry Pi. Learning modules for the course include perception and localization.

When it came to bringing this unique, hands-on learning experience to life, Mitchell says that MAGE was “incredibly supportive of my vision.” And that support continued as the university moved all classes online and Mitchell optimized the class for distance learning.

First, MAGE sent each ENPM 809T student a kit with all the parts they would need to build their robot at home. Then, Mitchell integrated a real-world scenario into the course curriculum: students were tasked with building robots that would simulate transporting vials of the COVID-19 vaccine from cold storage to waiting healthcare workers, minimizing human contact with the vaccine.

Finally, students documented their progress throughout the class with selfproduced videos. “To see the students driving that is really fantastic,” Mitchell says of the students building and improving their robots week after week.

When selecting the appropriate program for my master’s degree, I considered the University of Maryland as my first option because the program is specifically designed for students with previous professional experience and totally oriented towards the application of sustainable energy sources in the current industry.
