Only imagination and the number of your vacation days set the limit on what you can do and experience here. The Lahti region is an ideal travel destination for those who love nature experiences, active adventures, and local delicacies. Here you can hike along the shores of hundreds of lakes, boat through three canals from lake to lake using your own or a rented boat, embark on a paddling trip to peaceful bays and rugged rocky shores, go fishing, soak up the atmosphere of Päijänne National Park, or hop on a bicycle and explore the area at your own pace. You can also play golf on one of the region's seven courses or simply enjoy a lively variety of events. The area hosts a variety of festivals and sporting events nearly every weekend.
In the Lahti region, even food is an experience. Taste local specialties, such as Sitkas crispbread, which placed third in the Finnish food competition and visit small breweries and wineries. And if you're craving culture, the area offers summer theaters, exhibitions, and museums.
In the autumn, change your sandals for boots and head into the forest to pick berries and mushrooms, heat up the cottage sauna, and enjoy the silence and sunset while sitting on the dock. ■

I LAHTI
Musician and Saimaa band vocalist Kimmo Härmä chose three favorite places from his old hometown.
1 Restaurant Torvi
Torvi was a mecca of my youth and an essential underground venue. Luckily, the place is still almost exactly as it was in my youth in the 1990s. The wallto-wall carpet is gone, but thankfully the moped is still hanging on the wall.
2 Radiomäki hill
In my youth, this was a place for running and partying alike. The radio towers, running track, Radio and TV Museum, and the cemetery—there's still something intriguing about this place.
3 Mukkula Manor area
I lived in Mukkula when I was young and biked down to the Mukkula beach for swimming in summers. Great concerts were also organized there. I remember one time Remu Aaltonen fired his monitor mixer mid-song and pulled some local guy from the stage to replace him.
THE MUSICAL CHAIN LETTER BY SYSMÄN SUVISOITTO is a collaboration between Rauma Festivo and the Oulunsalo Soi Festival. The composer for the Sysmä segment is accordion artist Verna Kylmänen. Following the performance, guests can enjoy Debussy’s music accompanied by a cocktail snack menu at the Suvi-Pinx restaurant. Musical Chain Latter and Tasty Tunes at Suvi-Pinx, June 28.

Congratulations Lahti!
The City of Lahti celebrates its 120th anniversary this year. Here are some landmarks without which Lahti simply wouldn’t be Lahti.
THE CHURCH OF THE CROSS, designed by architect Alvar Aalto is an essential part of Lahti’s cityscape and one of Aalto’s final works. The 40-meter-tall tower houses the three bells of Lahti’s old wooden church, still in use today. The past is also honored in the church’s altar, whose simple cross was carved from an old support beam of the original tower. The southern end of Ristinkirkko features a cross-shaped group of 52 windows.
The church elegantly mirrors another masterpiece by a renowned architect, Eliel Saarinen’s CITY HALL , located at the southern end of the ceremonial axis that crosses the Market Square. The City Hall is one of Saarinen’s most significant architectural works designed in Finland and a landmark in the history of Finnish architecture. It is

Cycling routes
Lahti region has a variety of cycling routes suitable for all types of bikes, fitness levels, and moods. Here are a few examples of trails passing through landscapes shaped by water in the Salpausselkä Geopark area. For more readymade route options, visit www.visitlahti.fi/cycling.
AROUND LAKE VESIJÄRVI (80 km) is a classic cycling route popular among active cyclists who often ride it several times per summer. You can vary the route by cycling it clockwise or counterclockwise, or return from Vääksy by boat. The route offers varied landscapes from countryside to forests. Highlights include the charming village center of Hollola, the idyllic Vääksy Canal area, and Vesivehmaa’s culturally significant surroundings. It’s advisable to start early, with the cafés along Vääksy Canal providing perfect rest spots to watch boats pass through the lock. Less experienced cyclists can complete the route in a day, but overnight stays in Asikkala are also possible.
HOLLOLA VILLAGE LOOP (36 km) follows the Salpausselkä Ridge through Hollola’s Salpakangas and Hälvälä areas, continuing to Hollola church and returning via Messilä to Lahti. Your first break should definitely be in Hollola at the popular Kirkonkylän Kioski. Right next to the kiosk is
the picturesque medieval stone church of Hollola and a bell tower designed by Carl Ludwig Engel. On your return journey, you can take a refreshing swim at the Messilä Camping beach. This route is perfect for anyone who appreciates local history and natural beauty.
ASIKKALA ICE AGE ROUTE (79 km) Along the way, seven unique sites showcase the Ice Age’s impact and the geological development of Lake Päijänne. The route begins at Vääksy Canal and passes scenic countryside, Asikkala’s million-brick church, and the local heritage museum. Heading north, you'll encounter Finland’s most beautiful scenic road, Pulkkilanharju Ridge, connecting elongated islands via three bridges: Pulkkilansalmi embankment, Karisalmi Bridge, and Käkisalmi’s graceful arch bridge. Pause at Karisalmi Bridge kiosk in Päijänne National Park, and after passing Kalkkinen Canal, stop at Pihamaa’s charming Country Shop and Winery.
ILKANKURU BIKE FLOW AT VIERUMÄKI (2 km) introduces you to the thrill of downhill biking amid lush forest landscapes, sounds, and scents. The trail raises your pulse and excitement level, offering three different routes: green, blue, and red. The green route, Ilkan iisi, has gentle slopes. The blue and red routes include three additional challenges. The trail is designed with minimal impact on trees and roots. After your ride, relax and unwind in the soothing sauna at Vierumäki. ■
