Along the TEARAWAY journey, there have been so many shake-ups, makeovers and mash-ups. But the changes haven’t just been cosmetic. I often marvel at how anyone did my job before that little invention called ‘the internet’. Much like it’s crazy to imagine a Facebook-free world – where ‘like’ and ‘poke’ had different meanings – it’s now become almost impossible to imagine life before the internet.

But there was one. It was a simpler time, a time of legwarmers and synthesisers – the first time they were cool.

Know Your Rights

Thinking of signing a contract?

Here is what you need to know!

What is a contract?

• A contract is a like promise. If one person doesn’t keep the promise, the other person can take them to court to make them keep it • Only contracts with legal significance can be taken to courts • Contracts may be written or verbal

I am under 18 – can I sign a contract?

Yes, you can sign some contracts (although it’s also common for the other party to ask that your parents or guardian signs the contract as well).

What types of contracts do young people sign?

• Gym contracts • Sports contracts • Contracts for part time or after school work • Contracts at school • Contracts to buy something

What do I need to know before signing a contract?

• If you are under 18, you are considered a minor • In 1969 the government made a law to try and protect young people who were signing contracts That law still applies today, and it says that most contracts signed by young people under 18 are not enforceable. This means they can’t be held against you • The only contracts that might still be held against you if you’re under 18 are: - employment contracts - contracts for life insurance

I’ve signed a gym contract, and I cant afford to make my payments any more.

What can I do?

If you are under 18 and it’s just a normal gym contract, you might be able to cancel it. Talk to your gym first. If they don’t let you cancel it, speak to a lawyer about your options.

What should I do if I want to change some of the clauses of a contract before signing?

Scholarship season

BreakOut is an online database full of information about scholarships, grants and awards. There are over 3700 listings, which could be enough to make your head spin! Don’t worry though – when you enter the database, you will be asked a number of questions, which will help refine your search.

Whether you’re looking for assistance with education, sport, art or personal or professional development, BreakOut is the place to be – and you DON’T have to be an A+ student; there are scholarships for everyone.

All the information on applying for each scholarship is provided – eligibility criteria, how much money is available, closing dates, how to get an application form and who to contact for more information.

From there, it is over to you to get the application form, complete it, gather any required documents and submit the lot by the due date!

Know Where to Go Check with your school librarian or careers advisor to see if BreakOut is available at your school. Over 200 secondary schools across the country have access to the database, but if yours isn’t one of them, let your librarian or careers advisor know you want it!

While you’re waiting, try your public library or community centre – many of them provide free access.

Scholarships are available for all sorts of things, such as travelling overseas to sports competitions, or studying in NZ or abroad. You can even get money to help pay your living costs while you work on that artistic masterpiece!

The process of applying for grants and scholarships normally involves detailed form-filling, and the gathering of various documents. It depends on the scholarship, but you’ll usually need things like references or referees, a good CV, maybe a copy of your birth certificate and any relevant qualifications.

SHARON McCOSKRIE caught up with some of the youngest members of our Olympic team.

Paul Snow-Hansen Age: 21 Sport: Sailing From: Takapuna London will be Paul’s first Olympic Games.

He achieved 8th place at Perth Sailing World Championships in 2011. In the same year, his team finished five of the ISAF World Cup events inside the top ten. This year, Paul placed first at the International 470 Spring Cup, with teammate Jason Saunders.

What’s the best thing about sailing?

Being out in the elements. We are really lucky to live in such a beautiful country, so it is great to spend so much time outside, enjoying it!

Where is your favourite place to sail?

Anywhere warm and windy! It’s hard to find a better place to sail than off the North Shore [Auckland] in a stormy northeasterly.

How did you get into sailing?

My family has always been passionate about sailing.

My father was a competitive sailor, so my brother and I have always been around boats and the water.

Kurt Pickard Age: 21 Sport: BMX From: Tauranga, but lives in Papamoa Kurt was the 2010 NZ Champion but took time off after a serious crash in Europe. In 2011, he made his comeback making the quarterfinals at the World Championships.

This will be Kurt’s first Olympics.

Where is your favourite place to ride?

America, for sure. They have the best tracks and the weather is always nice and hot. It is also where the sport is from, so all the top guys are there, which makes the racing really good.

What have been your worst injuries from BMX? I have had three big surgeries on my left wrist alone. I’ve broken my right wrist twice, my leg, my collarbone... the list goes on. It’s just a part of our sport. The track is very unforgiving when you crash. The dirt is as hard as concrete and at 50 or 60km, it doesn’t normally end well.

Who’s your biggest inspiration?

I like to look at all successful athletes and business people and learn from them. Also, there are a lot of good, inspirational YouTube videos out there.

What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve faced as a sailor?

When committing to anything, there are always going to be sacrifices you have to make to achieve your goals. I often felt I was missing out socially while going through school, but I learnt that true friends will support you in what you do.

What is your favourite thing about BMX? I always loved riding bikes and racing around the neighborhood. It’s an individual sport, full of adrenaline and big jumps. I get to race around the world and now, with it being an Olympic sport, I get to chase the dream of a gold medal.

Outside of sailing, what do you love to do?

I really enjoy painting, drawing and also building things.

How will you celebrate if you win a medal?

That’s a good question. I only think and train towards getting a medal, not what happens afterwards. Maybe some downtime on a nice beach?

Eve is one of the youngest competitors in the Olympic regatta, and the youngest member of the NZ rowing team. She represented NZ in the Junior women’s eight in 2009, winning a silver medal. In 2010 she won the Junior world title in the straight four. She also competed in the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 in Singapore, finishing in seventh place.

What motivates you?

The three fine girls sitting behind me in the quad; Fiona Bourke, Louise Trappitt and Sarah Gray. They are my drive and motivation. I take my sunhat off to them.

What is something that you find challenging about being an athlete?

Sacrificing certain things in life so I can be an athlete.

Although, I think of it as not being a sacrifice; it’s a choice. This is the path I have wanted since I was a little one; if I wanted to be doing something else, I would be.

Age: 18 Sport: Football From: Papakura In the last year, Tim has represented NZ at U-17, U-20, Olympic and senior level. Standout performances at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico helped earn him a contract with Blackburn Rovers, whose academy team he helped to the FA Youth Cup final. A versatile and attack-minded player, Tim recently made his debut for the full national team in a 1-0 win over Honduras in Texas.

Which team would you most love to score against at the Olympics?

Anyone, I would just love to score.

If you could play alongside any striker who would it be?

Marco Rojas - what a player!!

What do you do when you’re not playing football?

Read. I get bantered a lot for it too.

What motivates you?

I hate losing, so the thought of that would be a huge factor.

If you could have one wish, what would it be?

That’s a hard one. Probably to be a premier league footballer and to play at a World Cup for the All Whites.

What has been your favourite moment so far?

Competing at my first World Champs in 2011 in BledSlovenia, where we gained bronze. To be selected to compete at the Olympics as a teenager is an exciting challenge.

Who is your biggest supporter?

Brown Bear (a stuffed teddy bear that travels the world with me.) Apart from Brown Bear, without a doubt, my family and friends. Their continuous support is never-ending. I am extremely lucky to have them and I couldn’t ever ask for anything more.

What makes you laugh?

This memory always makes me laugh: My older sister Liv and I would venture way out on the farm to care for any struggling newborn lambs. Once, Liv picked up a lamb and looked me straight in the eyes. She demanded that I run home as fast as I could to get some milk, heat it up and run back before the milk got cold. “I’m the better doctor and you’re the better runner,” were her exact words. So off I ran. I don’t think either of us will ever forget this incident – and still to this day she claims she made me an athlete. Thanks Liv.

Cameron has just completed his first season at Burnley in the English Championship. His debut this year for our national team made him the fourth youngest All White ever. Last year, Cameron represented NZ at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. When did you find out that you were going to the Olympics?

A few hours before the team got announced. I was over the moon! It is a great achievement and something that I will never forget.

What is your goal for after the Olympics?

To go back to Burnley and train full-time with the 1st team and get more game time. Also, to make the All Whites squad for the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

How do you prepare yourself before a game?

I listen to upbeat music to get myself motivated.

If you could meet any footballer, who would it be?

Steven Gerrard. I’ve always aspired to be like him; he’s a great leader for his club and country.

What has been your best experience with swimming so far?

Qualifying for the Olympics. It has been my goal for many years and I’ve been working very hard to get here.

It was very overwhelming when I qualified. I was very lucky to have so much support behind me.

How do you cope with the intense focus and training required?

It can be very scary at times, but I am a very determined and competitive person, so I always enjoy the challenge. I work well under pressure, so I can prepare myself well before racing.

What do you love most about swimming?

I love the sport a lot, as I’ve done it since I was a little girl. I love the achievements that I’ve made in swimming and that just makes me want to continue on with it.

What do you do on race day to prepare yourself?

I have a good, energy-filled dinner the night before and a great sleep. On the day I have a long warm-up, making sure I feel good in the water. I talk to my coach, Gary Hurring, to plan out the race. I’m always very nervous before my races, so I like to sit by myself and focus.

Taking sport to an international level and competing for your country at the Olympic Games is a big commitment to make. Making the pledge to compete drug-free and play true takes another level of strength. We spoke to SARAH WALKER, NZs’ first female BMX Olympian about being strong enough to be clean.

“

Samantha made her debut as a medalist at the Trans Tasman Tri Series in Australia in 2008 and 2009. She also won a silver and a bronze at the 2010 Oceania Championships in Samoa. Plus, she won silver last year at the World University Games. In her first Olympic Games, Samantha will be competing in the Women’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay.

“There’s a form of satisfaction that comes from training hard and not leaning on anything to get the results,” explains Sarah.

“When I race, I want to know I’m at the best I can be and I want everyone I’m racing against to be the best that they can be. “Whatever the result, I want it to be 100% of what I am capable of.”

Sarah is disappointed by athletes who cheat with performance enhancing drugs and has never been tempted herself. “It’s unfair on the people who don’t use drugs,” she says. “ I think it’s immoral and I don’t know how people can do it. “How can they feel good about what they’ve achieved?”.

She says being part of the drug-free sport community – who pledge to compete clean – shows you can be the best without doping. “To be the best takes hard

work,” Sarah explains. “You can’t take the easy road and you’re not going to be the best in the world if you take short cuts.”

Sarah says the very first time she was tested was “scary” because she’d never experienced anything like it before. “After that first time it becomes easy, because you know it’s what you have to do to keep sport clean. It’s part of being a professional.

While she agrees that a drug test is no fun Sarah says that it is a small price to pay: “You just have to remember why you’re doing it.”

Cannabis is a drug which many young athletes use worldwide. A large number of NZ athletes test positive for it. Sarah is lucky to have never been tempted. Even though she knows it is easily accessible, she chooses to surround herself with people who want to be at their best too.

“It doesn’t make you cooler or a better person. It doesn’t help me to be the best BMXer in the world, so why would I even risk it? If I was to lose that I don’t know what my life would be. It’s all about the choices you make.”

The Paralympic Games has grown dramatically since its early days. 400 athletes from 23 countries competed in Rome in 1960. And now, London 2012 will officially be the biggest Paralympic Games in history. A total of 165 countries and 4,200 athletes will compete for 148 medals! We are very excited to watch the performances of our teen athletes especially.

SHARON McCOSKRIE managed to catch up with them before they head to London.

e 1968, Sinc NZ has a proud history of winning medals at both the Summer and Winter Games. In 2008, NZ was represented in Beijing by a team of 30 athletes.

They competed across seven sports, winning a total of 12 medals (five gold, three silver and four bronze). In 2010, NZ was represented at the Vancouver Winter Paralympic Games by a team of two athletes, with Adam Hall winning gold in the standing slalom.

Sophie Pascoe Age: 19 Sport: Swimming From: Christchurch Sophie is a superstar athlete. Amongst many other awards and accolades, she won three gold medals and a silver at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

She loves fashion, movies and listening to music – both Top 40 and old school.

After an accident at the age of two, Sophie had her left leg amputated below the knee.

How many hours of training do you do a week?

I train about 22 hours in the pool and do six hours land training.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

To retain being the best in the world.

Aine Kelly Costello

Aine Kelly Costello Age: 17 Sport: Swimming From: Dublin, Ireland, but lives in Auckland Aine won a gold and three silvers at the 2011 Pan Pacific Para Swim Championships. When she’s not training or competing, she loves playing piano and flute, reading and Facebook! She would like to do a performance degree in flute, combined with Spanish, at uni.

Aine is blind; she was born with LCA (Leber Congenital Amaurosis), which is a very rare genetic disorder.

How old were you when you started your sport?

I learned to swim when I was four, and started training about three hours per week when I was 11. I started taking swimming more seriously near the end of 2009, when I was 14.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

Probably learning to put faith in a variety of different tappers (I am tapped at a designated distance from the end of the pool, so I know when to turn).

What are you looking forward to the most?

Reaching new heights and finding out something new about myself.

Who’s your biggest supporter?

Definitely my mum. She tirelessly dedicates many, many hours a week, not only to driving me to and from training, but also to tapping me at all of my training sessions.

How do you prepare yourself on competition day?

I always make sure to take care about what I eat before a race; I am very picky on competition days. Mentally, the wait between warm-up and the race is definitely the toughest part for me. I aim to be super determined to get everything I want to do as part of the race right, but also to enjoy it.

What do you love to do when you are not training?

Music is a huge passion of mine. I take school seriously (I am in Year 13 this year) and enjoy striving for excellence in academics. I also like to help out in the community with fund-raising collections, performing locally, and being a part of my school’s citizenship council.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

I would have to say the Beijing

Daniel Holt Age: 19 Sport: Swimming From: Auckland Daniel says swimming will always be his main sport, but he would like to try cycling as well. This year he entered the Auckland Harbour Crossing swim and finished in the top 20, against thousands.

He was the only disabled swimmer (that he knew of ). He has several gold and silver medals under his belt already and when he’s not collecting them, he likes going to the beach, wakeboarding, kneeboarding and paintballing. He is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Business at Massey University. Daniel is visually impaired.

How many hours of training do you do a week?

Every week I undergo nine two-hour pool sessions, two gym sessions and two land training sessions. So, somewhere in the vicinity of 22 hours a week, depending on what stage of training I am in.

Paralympics, but every moment standing on the podium with a gold medal around your neck, listening to the national anthem is a special moment.

What’s your dream?

To be the best in the world at what I do and to become a lasting legacy for the sport in our nation.

What do you love to do when you are not training?

Nothing! Haha. When I have been working hard all week physically, my way of relaxing and feeling good is to watch movies.

What do you plan to do post Paralympics?

After the London games I am going to have a big relaxing break to give time to myself to appreciate the past four years of training hard. Then look towards what the future will bring.

What’s your dream?

Dreams are just goals that you are more willing to make reality. The way I see it, I don’t have any dreams around the Paralympics – only goals. My goal for the Paralympics is to medal in my 400m Freestyle.

How do you prepare yourself on competition day?

Competition day starts no different to any other day. I get up, have breakfast grab my gear that I got ready the day before. I go to the pool, stretch, do my race warm-up, put my race togs on and talk to my coach about my race plan. Then I will go off and listen to music and run through my race in my head.

What do you love to do when you are not training?

Like any teen I like being around my friends. We go catch a movie, play pool and go to the beach. There are times when swimming has to be number one – the challenge is knowing when to do what.

“classification”?

Classification is a framework for Paralympic competition. Paralympic athletes have an impairment in body structures and functions that leads to a competitive disadvantage in sport. So, criteria are put in place to ensure that winning is determined by skill, fitness, power, endurance, tactical ability and mental focus. These are the same factors that account for success in able-bodied athletes.

Paralympic athletes are grouped in classes related to their impairment and to the tasks in the sport.

Who’s your biggest supporter?

My biggest supporters are my parents, Carmel and Steve.

A Taieri College student, Holly started throwing javelin about four years ago. Last year she placed 5th at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships. She also won a silver and a bronze medal at the 2011 Australian Athletics Championships. Holly was born with her left arm shortened below the elbow.

What are you looking forward to the most?

The thing that I’m looking forward to the most is the competition and the atmosphere that comes with it.

Nikita Howarth

Nikita has been swimming as long as she can remember. In 2011 she competed in her first major international meet, winning a silver and a bronze in the 50m Butterfly and 100m Breaststroke respectively. Nikita has bilateral upper limb deficiency, which means she has no hands. She is the youngest ever NZ Paralympian to attend the Games.

How do you prepare yourself on competition day?

Go to the pool and do a good warm-up; talk to the coach and drink lots of water.

The 14th Paralympic Games and will take place between 29 August and 9 September in London.

What do you love to do when you are not training?

Hang with my mates and listen to music. I also love soccer and dancing, especially ballet.

What’s your dream?

To become the best arm amputee javelin thrower in the world and to win a medal at a Paralympics.

Who’s your biggest supporter?

My family are definitely my biggest supporters, in particular my Nana. She has always been there to take me to all my training. She also used to come overseas with me to my competitions.

What do you plan to do post Paralympics?

I will be focusing on school and the end of year exams. Sporting-wise, I will be training for the world championships next year.

What do you plan to do post Paralympics?

Have a rest from swimming and a postParalympic party, before getting back in the pool to work towards the next big meet.

Rebecca Dubber Mary Fisher Age: 19 Sport: Swimming From: Wellington Mary is an all-round sportsperson, who loves soccer, tandem cycling and hiking in the NZ bush. Her favourite events are the 100m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke, and she likes competing against ablebodied swimmers. She has racked up a stack of awards and medals at national and international competitions. Mary is visually impaired.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

Winning two bronze medals in Rio de Janeiro at the World Champs.

What are you looking forward to the most?

Experiencing the multi-sport, international flavour of the London

games and competing on the highest possible world-stage with the rest of the NZ team.

What’s your dream?

Stepping onto the starting blocks knowing I’ve prepared as well as possible; touching the finish knowing I’ve put every ounce of effort into the race; standing on the podium knowing I’ve done myself, my family, coach, friends and country proud.

Rebecca has an impressive collection of awards and medals, including two silvers and a bronze from last year’s Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Canada. Her favourite events are the 100m Backstroke and 400m Freestyle.

Rebecca has lumbar sacral agenesis; she is missing the lumbar area of her spine, and the lower half of her body has not formed completely.

I love skiing, reading, being immersed in NZ’s outdoors and cooking – maybe moving into a flat where no-one had previously had to cook helped that!

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

So far I would say my biggest challenge has been trying to juggle my studies and training. It gets tough when both become busy.

What do you love to do when you are not training?

I love watching movies and listening to music. I’m also an avid Twitter and Facebook user.

What do you plan to do post Paralympics?

After London I’ll probably concentrate on studying at Massey Wellington – and a season pass to the rip up the slopes next year sounds great.

What are you looking forward to the most?

The competition atmosphere. I’ve been told it’s very different from anything I’ve ever experienced before.

What do you plan to do post Paralympics?

I want to keep swimming after London. I think it would be amazing to swim in Rio in four year’s time!

Who’s your biggest supporter?

My mum and dad. They are, hands-down, the most amazing supporters I could have ever asked for. Without them there is no way I’d be where I am today.

A good night’s sleep is key for me when I’m preparing for race day.

20 Winning Films are chosen each year by judges from media, education, government and business. They are celebrated at The Someday Awards red carpet ceremony in Auckland, where Special Awards are announced. There is also an online popular vote for Audience Favourite.

We love this project so much, we even have our own Special Award: The TEARAWAY Secondary School Performance Award. Think of it like Best Actor or Actress at the Oscars! Plus, there’s The Erin Simpson Show Secondary School Film-makers Award.

The director of the film chosen as The Body Shop Standout Winner will take away $8000 worth of Unitec courses or film production. Plus, each of the 20 winning film-makers or teams will receive a wicked prize package worth over $1000.

The winning films tackled subjects ranging from pollution and deforestation to the meaning of ‘kaitiaki’ and how to be a conscious shopper. Hi, I’m BEN HOPE, the new Fleur at Kiwi FM, for lack of a better introduction.

I was the intern for 10 months. I put away a lot of CDs, made some coffees, got to talk on the radio and write gig guides. Then, when Fleur jet-setted off to America for love and music, I was offered her job. It’s pretty awesome. I’ve lived in Auckland all my life, and went to AUT where I studied Communications and majored in Radio. Now I’ve got my dream gig, and I get to continue writing about NZ music.

What advice would you give to young people dealing with depression?

Talk about it as openly as you can. If you let people know how you are feeling, they are more able to help you. The worst thing that you can do is keep it to yourself.

What’s your all-time favourite album?

I’d have to say two albums because both of these shaped who I am today: Michael Jackson’s Dangerous and Metallica’s Black Album.

Where would you like to be in five years?

On a stadium world tour, having received so many Grammys that I could use them as doorstoppers for every door in my house!

Singer/songwriter, producer and instrumentalist extraordinaire Janine Foster is currently taking the country by storm.

Her latest project, Janine and the Mixtape sounds like an infectious mix of 90s hip hop beats, R’n’B vocals and intricate synths.

JEROME SEARS explains why this is one of his favourite up-and-comers.

The project that is Janine and the Mixtape also includes Nik Donaldson, Oli Holmes and Will Henderson. The group was recently signed by Warner Music NZ, and release a debut EP released this month. It's the start of big things for Janine, who started out playing open mic nights at the age of 15.

Janine's passion for music lead her to study it at Auckland University. Totally immersed for three years, this was a great way to hang around other musos and experiment with her sound before finding her feet as an artist. Then after winning the Juice TV Auckland University Songwriter of the Year in 2010, she was destined for success.

“Not having an excuse for being a student anymore” Janine faced that question we are all familiar with: what to do now? Her sights were set on the big apple.

After scoring a job in what she describes as a “horrible old shop”, Janine eventually saved enough money to jet set off to New York. Self-promotion and motivation were key, and she got in touch with loads of venues, booking shows for her month-long stint.

Playing shows, making friends and just hanging out in New York, Janine had caught the bug. Her first trip a success, she plans to go back to New York soon and build on her experience.

Kimbra and David Dallas, who are in, her words “paving the way for New Zealand music and killing it overseas.”

As both producer and vocalist, she has full control over her material. Janine writes her own songs, produces the beats and designs and runs her own website and other social media. Ultimately a selftaught producer and engineer, she is constantly experimenting as part of the creation process. “Everything I do is very honest and it can be quite raw, and that is really important” says Janine.

Before it's eventual release, Janine put together 50 different versions of her debut single, Bullets. In her words, the song is about “trying to take a positive aspect out of all the negative things that get thrown at you. From being really hurt, going through some tough times and finding the beauty in that and writing about it, as opposed to letting it get you down.” Since going live a couple of months ago, the music video for Bullets has reached over 23,000 views on YouTube, gaining the attention of numerous international music blogs.

Janine is currently working on a side project with Ashley Hughes from Kidz in Space, called 80s in Harlem. Back in April, Zeal Wellington was packed with hardcore fans for the release of Tranquility, the debut EP from up-and-coming heavy act, As Legends Rise. SCOTTIE REEVE was there.

After an ambient introduction of verbed-out guitars and punching kicks, As Legends Rise dropped into their first song of the night. The response was rapturous, with a hundred fans throwing-down chaotically.

This was the first show the band had hosted and their first release to a faithful audience who are growing nationwide.

“People were stage-diving and climbing up the speaker stacks, just going crazy,” said Cam Brennan-Belworthy, the band’s bass player. “So many people showed up, it was overwhelming.”

As Legends Rise has become one of the central players in a growing all-ages heavy music scene in Wellington. It’s a scene that a loyal following of bands and audience from all around the country come to be a part of. Auckland bands such as Antagonist AD have paved the way, and it’s beginning to catch on in the capital. A faithful community of hardcore and heavy music fans are starting bands and promoting their own shows.

For fans of As Legends Rise, a key factor is their broad style, which draws from the spectrum of heavy music. “There’s ambient passages, riffs reminiscent of melodic death, slams and hardcore twosteps” said vocalist Arnold Kim. He cites bands such as Abominable Putridity and The Contortionist as key influences.

As Legends Rise are also well-known for bringing a positive and honest angle to what can be a dark and hopeless scene.

Lyrics come from experiences the band has gone through and social issues they feel need a voice. Above all, the band is about good vibes and good times.

They recently toured to Auckland to play at Zeal West and have plans for a full North Island tour later in 2012. They have also played support for some of the biggest names in NZ’s heavy music scene, including Depths and Saving Grace, as well as internationals such as Northlane.

With big shows coming up alongside overseas acts such as Delaware Wolves and Edge of Fury, the band has promising future ahead of them.

The Smokefreerockquest is famous for overflowing with talent from every city, across every genre – and this year has been no exception. With the top eight bands due to be announced on August 22, HANNAH SHORT brings you the lowdown on just a few of this year's regional winners.

Determined to improve on last year’s third place finish were Lazarus Rising, a group of close mates from Riverton’s Apirama College. After placing just outside of the top two, the boys weren’t able to qualify for the national finals, so instead went home and focused all their energy on improving for this year’s competition. Practice makes perfect, and that couldn’t be more true for Lazarus Rising. They wowed the judges with their original song Break the Chain, a song about being yourself that not only won them first place at their regional final, but also won them the Lowdown Best Song award!

One of the few solo singer/songwriters of the competition was Claudia Jardine, who braved the Canterbury crowd with nothing but her guitar and beautiful voice. Winning second place, she also collected a few other awards on the night. Erase Me, her original song, won her the APRA Lyric Award, which was soon followed by the Smokefree Award For Women’s Musicianship. Smokefreerockquest is not the first of Claudia’s musical ventures, and it’s the start of many to come.

Much to the surprise of the crowd of 7th Formers at the Hawke’s Bay regional final, two 13-year-olds and a 12-year-old took the stage and wowed the Opera House. An infusion of pop and reggae, Image's sound stood out, quickly placing them as the favourites for the night. Beating bands with members nearly five years older than them wasn’t the only thing to be proud of for these newcomers; Image also took away the Lowdown Best Song award for their songs inspired by “life and relationships”.

Boasting seven members and a strong reggae sound are East Coast winners, Whai. All of the musos have been involved separately with previous Smokefreerockquests, but have always played broad genres. This year, they’ve gone with where their hearts are – reggae! Confidence was key for lead singer Danielle Knight, who said the band used their extensive kapa haka experience to allow them to work the crowd at the regional finals.

Young and Reckless

Upon listening to Young and Reckless, one could easily be confused as to why they’re not already on our radios.

This is why their win at the first of two Central Auckland regional finals came as no surprise. An extremely polished sound and mature messages behind each song pushed them to the top of their finals night. The three-piece band claim former Smokefreerockquest competitors Midnight Youth as a major influence.

Bitter Class

A Bit Nigel These boys are anything but newcomers to the competition, and could even be called seasoned pros after the years they’ve spent working to get to the top of the Smokefreerockquest. 2011 saw them fight their way to a place in the top six bands nationwide; a feat they hope to repeat again this year. A Bit Nigel knew they had work to do if they wanted to keep up the {14} Tearawayreputation Term 2, 2012 impressive they’d earned themselves, so they returned home to tweak their sound, making it a little more rocky and introducing more synth. The practice clearly paid off, with a first place finish in the Rotorua regional finals!

With one of the widest age ranges in the competition, Bitter Class proved that age is just a number at the Timaru regional final. A mix of year 8s to 13s from four different schools made up the pure rock band. Behind the range of personalities was guitarist Ruby Fraser, who approached the talented students from around her region with one goal in mind: to conquer Smokefreerockquest. Her initiative and leadership earned her the prestigious Smokefree Award For Women’s Musicianship, as well as the Mainz Musicianship Award.

The national finalists will be selected from a pool made up of first and second place winners from each of the 24 regional finals. Also in with a chance are bands from Rockshop Second Chance, an opportunity for established bands who feel they didn’t play their best on the night.

“Judges will be selecting the eight finalists from DVDs of their own original music,” Smokefreerockquest Founder and Director Glenn Common says. “There are a range of skills they’ll need to pull this together – creativity and musical ability are important, but they also learn to work together as a group and have to be well organised to produce the video footage that could be their next step towards Kiwi music success.”

Singer/songwriter Clara van Wel returned to the Marlborough regionals this year after winning 2011’s final. Performing on stage is no easy task, but is only made harder when you’re performing alone. A majority of the competition had company on stage in the form of back up vocalists, fellow guitarists and drummers, but Clara braved the crowd alone. The 14-year-old really stepped up her game this year. With her success in Smokefreerockquest so far, Clara hopes to eventually turn her hobby into a long-lasting career.

Auckland Central night 1 – 1st: Young and the Reckless, 2nd: We Are the Pirates, 3rd: Decend Auckland Central night 2 – 1st: Teleprompters, 2nd: Vivid, 3rd: Academic Dress Hire Bay of Plenty – 1st: Sunday Best, 2nd: Six Gun Quota, 3rd: RPM Canterbury night 1 – 1st: Mirum, 2nd: Claudia Jardine, 3rd: Bloodmoon Canterbury night 1 – 1st: Half Mountain, 2nd: Runaway Betty, 3rd: Three’s a Crowd Hydro Raspberry no doubt earned points for the originality of their name, but it was their musical talent that earned them first place at the Manawatu regionals.

Rather than conforming to any one genre, the boys describe their sound as “happy tunes” and play whatever comes to mind. Their seemingly random songs – one in particular tells of space pirates – are fun and carefree.

According to drummer Jake Braid, “even if they don’t mean anything, the words are cool!” Freyburg College students Braid, Sam Seumanu and Jason Harkett didn’t go in expecting to win, and instead were just after a good time. Luckily for them, they managed to snag both a first place finish and a great night!

HANNAH SHORT caught up with drummer Jimi Mataio.

The boys tightened up their sound and returned the following year, this time receiving much more attention.

They wowed the judges and audience alike, and went on to claim the national title.

Going into the 2010 Smokefreerockquest, winning was at the back of the band’s mind. According to Jimi, their goals were to “put on a good show and have a great time”. Rather than exuding arrogance and overconfidence, The Good Fun proved to be down-to-earth and just generally out to have... good fun.

Since their win, they’ve gone on to be one of the most recognised up-and-coming bands in the country, earning a name for themselves amongst the nation’s best.

2010 saw The Good Fun crowned as Smokefreerockquest winners, a year after the band formed. Jimi and lead singer Leroy Clampitt had only really ever messed around with music; jamming in the garage was as serious as their musical ventures had been.

Perks of the Gig

Then, they started to suspect that, between them, they might have something promising. They conned schoolmate Fraser MacDonald into playing bass for them in their first-ever Smokefreerockquest in 2009. With no notable result, they returned back home to practice.

“The Smokefreerockquest has been the biggest kind of exposure for us to date,” says Jimi. “A lot of our fans have followed us from our win in 2010 or have seen our debut single Naughty Little Sin, so it’s been the biggest help!

The support from the Smokefreerockquest team doesn’t stop after the night of the finals; they go on to help push each band and encourage them to reach their full potential.

“There have been some awesome perks from winning the Smokefreerockquest, such as getting exposure on television and radio and getting to play with and meet artists that we’ve always looked up to,” Jimi continues.

“Also we’ve been lucky enough to be involved with the Smokefreerockquest for the past two years now, playing to the crowd while the judges make their decisions”.

The boys believe that they would have slowly worked their way onto the NZ music scene no matter what, but without that continuous support of Smokefreerockquest, the process would have been a lot slower. The head start given by the competition was incredible, and something that is highly appreciated by each of the band’s current members.

Changing it Up With all the exposure came a change in image, some changes in line-up and a name change And so, the band formerly known as The Good Fun became Banglade$h.

It wasn’t long after that, that music took over B lives. “we made the transition from hobby to career as soon as money got involved,” explains Jimi. “We then realised this was serious business and we needed to step up our game, or get crushed. Music and entertainment is our life now and we wouldn’t want to do anything else!”

Who will be the next band or artist to join the Smokefreerockquest hall of fame? This year’s top eight will be announced on August 22, ahead of the National Final on September 22. B.o.B seemed to burst onto the music scene, quickly becoming a huge name in pop and hip hop.

Best known for his collaborations with artists such as Bruno Mars and Paramore’s Hayley Williams, he’s recently released his second studio album, Strange Clouds. LAUREN BRAMELY caught up with the American rapper, singer/ songwriter and producer.

Congratulations on your new album - how does it feel to have completed it?

If you could work with any artist you haven’t already worked with, who would it be?

It’s a feeling that I’ve been waiting on for an extremely long time. I didn’t hold anything back on this project.

I think it would be crazy to do a remix with Skrillex for a bit of a new sound.

It’s quite a different style to your first album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray. Was it important for you to mix it up and show a different style?

How old were you when you started writing lyrics?

I was listening to artists like DMX and Eminem at a young age; being in Atlanta at the time was a huge place for hip hop. It’s always been with me, since I was a kid, but I really saw it as a career when I was 13.

I wanted to show people who I am on this project, I feel like the first album showed everything and I wanted to make sure this album had everything and more.

There are many great collaborations on this album, including some you wouldn’t expect, such as Morgan Freeman and Taylor Swift. Did you get to work closely with the other artists?

I actually did for the most part. All of them were a real natural, organic collaboration and we all had a good chemistry with the recording and the writing.

Everything was balanced.

What advice would you give to younger people wanting to get into the music industry?

The Gift of Words With a career spanning two decades, Maitreya is a heavyweight in the domains of NZ rap and hip hop. A former member of Nilstate and Dark Tower, he’s toured both nationally and internationally and has an internship at Jay-Z’s Roc-a-Fella Records under his belt. He was a much-loved presenter on Mai FM’s Breakfast Show for three years, and also scored himself the Maioha Silver Scroll in 2010. Busy! Now he’s back with his second album, which – as HENRIETTA BOLLINGER found out – is something a little special.

When I ask Jamie “Maitreya” Greenslade that typical, curious interviewer question – what his influences are, I get a grin. “Michael Jackson”, he fires at me without hesitation. “I’m a rapper first and foremost – of course, my heroes come from [the States].”

Maybe I should have expected it, but when you come across a Pakeha rapper fluent in Te Reo, it’s hard not to marvel – with due respect – at the novelty of it. This is not how Maitreya sees it, however.

He felt this particularly keenly on a recent tour with The Babysitters Circus. Not only is Te Reo a point of difference, but something he has seen people really respond to. “In Holland, singing Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” Jamie says, “we had people screaming out: Kei te pai!” Jamie believes that when a song captures you, it isn’t the language it’s in that hooks you, but the ihi and wehi behind it. Music has a force and power of it’s own.

At 17, Maitreya was ejected from an art class and placed in a Te Reo class two years below him. There he found – instead of the intended punishment and shame – a second passion. He was fascinated by this new way of seeing that Te Reo Maori and Te Ao Maori – the Maori language and world – offered him.

Jamie urges that this, like any of his other work, is about the music. “This record is not Maori 101,” he explains. That said, it has been somewhat about offering people another way of viewing Te Reo. “I’m not dragging something from the past into the present. Te Reo Maori is alive and well in my life, but it is about making it relevant.”

It was then a logical step to “inject” Te Reo Maori words and phrases into his music. “There was never a question about it… never a reason not to keep [using Te Reo],” says Jamie.

His hope is that people will listen to and enjoy the music for what it is. If it also acts as a “spark” to learn Te Reo, then so be it.

Most recently, his two passions have taken him a step further. During Maori Language Week at the end of July, he released Aio, a completely bilingual album. Each track appears on the album twice: once in English, once in Te Reo Maori. Aio is produced by OpShop’s Jason Kerrison, whom Jamie also collaborates with in their band The Babysitters Circus.

The twin tracks, complete with written lyrics, offer the listener a tool to learn Te Reo. Jamie is a strong supporter of compulsory Te Reo in schools, from Primary to Year 12. Not imbuing the language with the same importance as English is something he describes as “selfish”. In his experience, Te Reo Maori is “a gift”.

Listening to a couple of the tracks myself, I’m immediately drawn to the wairua, the spirit of this music.

The album opens with a piercing karanga performed by Whirimako Black, which then slides effortlessly into the title track. Aio has everything: a good strong beat and beautiful accompanying vocals by Anika Moa. It has a flow that is at times unexpected but always clear and clever, which, Jamie says, is something Te Reo lends itself to.

This is smoothly crafted music for any audience to dive into. But as the line in Wake the Neighbours goes: This ain’t a party without you.

Taking Tradition to

New Heights

Matariki Festival has just been, and Auckland celebrated with a big bang! Queens Wharf was alive with powerful performances, markets and general good times.

One of the Festival performers, PERE WIHONGI takes us through a highlight – and the history.

The 2degrees Kapa Haka Super 12s is a fast-paced event that takes Kapa Haka to a new level.

Held as part of the Matariki Festival, it gives young performers an opportunity to showcase their Kapa Haka skills in new and exciting ways. Using traditional waiata (song), poi and haka, the performers fuse tradition with contemporary culture, and create a high-energy stage performance.

This year’s fierce competition saw 12 teams of 12 performers battle it out for 12 minutes each, at Queens Wharf in Auckland. Up for grabs was a prize pool of $10,000 cash and some wicked prizes.

What is Matariki?

Matariki is the name for a particular group of stars, and is also the traditional Māori New Year. The pre-dawn rise of the stars can be seen in the last few days of May every year. The new year is marked at the sighting of the next new moon, which occurs during June.

The Matariki stars are known to many as Pleiades, but to the Japanese they are called Subaru, just like the car.

These stars are treasured to Māori because they were once used as a navigation tool. On the journey from Hawaiki (the land on which Māori lived before NZ) Māori followed these stars, which ultimately led them to Aotearoa, the Land of The Long White Cloud.

Māori have celebrated this special event for many generations. It marks not only a new year, but a time for new crops; the beginning of the agriculture season.

Modern day celebration of the event isn’t so different.

These days, we celebrate our past as well as moving on with our future. We do this in many ways, through Kapa Haka and other performances, traditional Māori games and gatherings. And last, but certainly not, least FOOD! Yum! V Tu Whitia

Kapa Haka is the traditional form of Māori performing arts. It includes special Māori weaponry such as the taiaha (staff ) patu (club) and the poi, which was traditionally used to strengthen the wrists of men for war, but is now used to express the femininity of women.

In Kapa Haka you see the shaking of the hands, which is called the wiri. This is not just a distraction for the eyes, but a depiction of the ancient god Tānerore. He is the personification of the heat waves you see on a hot summers day.

You will also see a Pūkana. For males, this is the poking out of the tongue and for females it is the frowning of the mouth coupled with the opening of the eyes. Do not fear! This tactic was made to scare off strangers and enemies, but these days it is just for performances. You may notice that your mum does some of these looks when she’s angry, which is pretty scary too!

Māori consider Kapa Haka to be a special link that ties us back to our ancestors, a form of dance that strengthens not only our heritage but our language as well.

When you celebrate Matariki, always remember that it is a time to celebrate what once was and prepare for what is to come.

Hanging with Jennifer Lopez, teaching the amazing artists of Cirque de Soleil and being paid to travel on cruise ships to the Bahamas: it’s all part of the job description for Parris Goebel. HANNAH SHORT caught up with the hottest choreographer in NZ.

Auckland-born Parris grew up around performing arts, and at the young age of 14 decided to make something of her hobby.

With a bit of advice from Dad, she put the feelers out and eventually started her own crew, known as ReQuest. Five members and a dream (and a lot of hard work!) was all it took before the all-female dance crew started to get recognised locally and nationally. Then, in 2010 they won the World Hip Hop Championships.

“ReQuest has without a doubt been the number one base of my career,” says Parris. “The friendship, the support, the exposure, the performances, the growth. Everything! ReQuest really was the platform to everything I’ve done.”

The crew might not have been quite as successful at the 2011 World Hip Hop Championships, placing second to Plague from the UK, but Parris knows that in the world of dance, you can’t expect to always come out on top. Mistakes and disappointments are all a part of the career.

“Bouncing back is an easy thing to do, because if your love and passion is strong enough, it should be effortless to keep on going. For me, all those things are just bumps along my journey, so I always find motivation somewhere.”

Foundations of a Fairytale As soon as Parris could walk she dedicated herself to dancing. She began performing as early as Year One in her school’s talent quest. Although she may not have always been at the top of her game, she gave it her all and went on to compete every year for the rest of her school life. That level of commitment is now paying off.

Parris’ passion for performing arts and dance was no secret to her friends and family. She speaks of her dedication from a young age: “I didn’t know that it was going to be my full-time career, but I knew it was all I wanted to do,” she explains.

This realisation came even before ReQuest. Her obsession stems from an honest desire to dance, rather than wanting to be famous or earn insane amounts of money. From there, the story dances the line between real life and fairytale.

Enter, Hollywood A brief meeting at 16 was all it took for Parris’ career to spiral into the glitz and glam of the Hollywood dance industry.

Jennifer Lopez’ boyfriend Casper Smart met the eager young Kiwi in passing. It was a meeting that Parris felt had almost no impact on the now-famous star. Something must have clicked for Casper though, as it wasn’t long before he began searching up Goebel’s work on YouTube. He eventually got in contact and asked if she’d be interested in submitting something for Jennifer Lopez’ upcoming tour.

Dancing to the Top

Upon Parris’ arrival, J-Lo decided that she wanted more of the NZ touch. “Everything fell into place,” explains Parris.

“At first, it was just me doing choreography for the tour, but when I got over there, she wanted to use my girls for American Idol. So then, the girls got the phone call, they got visas and flew over. Everything was very on the spot!”

The Wisdom of J-Lo One-on-one time with J-Lo was all part of the job: “It really is about how you’re connecting, the chemistry,” says Parris. “That way the job isn’t really a job, it’s more fun.

The whole time I just got to know her more as a person.

Sometimes she’d stop dancing and we’d just sit and hang.”

The answer was an obvious ‘yes’, and within three days Parris sent in three different clips to songs chosen by Casper.

The main message Jennifer conveyed to Parris was the idea of taking care of yourself and making sure you’re constantly surrounded by good people. Parris says that for Jennifer, age doesn’t act as a barrier, as it might for some other stars. Instead, she always ensures she’s in a happy environment and doing what she loves to do.

One week was all the international superstar needed to decide that Parris was as good as it gets in the world of dance. He called her asking to start work immediately.

That’s essentially the key to surviving in such a demanding industry. In fact, you could apply that to any industry, or area of life.

What does 'diversity' mean to you, and why is it important? In the lead-up to the National Youth Diversity Forum, FRANKIE WOOD-BODLEY discusses the D-word.

In August last year, myself and 47 other young leaders attended the National Youth Diversity Forum. We were selected for our leadership skills, as well as our drive to progress and enhance our knowledge about diversity in NZ. We were challenged to think about the ways in which we and our communities are diverse. Typically, diversity has been associated with cultural and race relations. However, over recent years the delegates of the Forum have redefined what diversity means in a 21st Century, NZ context. To us as young Kiwis, ‘diversity’ includes not only culture and race, but also gender, disability, sexual orientation and religion.

We looked at the Treaty of Waitangi and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We discussed the ways in which people are denied their rights and what responsibilities we have to protect each other’s rights.

To celebrate and encourage diversity, we undertook dramatic performances and produced works of art with messages to take back to our communities.

From Rio, With Hope Rio+20 is a much catchier name for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.

After an international conference 20 years ago, world leaders met up again recently in Rio, to discuss sustainability. By BEN DOWDLE, NASIF AZAM and PIP BENNETT. The purpose of Rio+20 was to reaffirm political commitment to sustainable development. It brought together governments, business and society to look for new ways to improve equality, people’s lives and environmental health. This has never been more pressing and positive resolutions never more urgent.

Sustainable development is about making sure future generations will be able to fulfil their needs, while keeping our own ability to do the same today. Ensuring resources are around for people to use in 50 or 100 years is a problem we can already see around the world. There is no doubt that changes need to be made now.

Sometimes it seems like the focus of sustainable development is only on the natural environment. However, people and their needs are also equally important. Including things like education, inequality, food and nutrition, sustainable development is a complex idea which requires a change in our mindset.

This is one of the most fruitful things which can come out of the Rio+20 talks, because if we are to make meaningful changes, we need to rethink how we measure ‘progress’.

A change in attitude can mean that we can set measured steps to tackle the issues we face today, while never forgetting the

Delegates will meet and network with young people from all over the country, and gain a thorough knowledge of the challenges young people of diversity face in NZ. The Youth Forum is a chance for us to shape NZ into a nation which not only embraces its diversity, but utilises the strengths found in people of diversity.

Why would you sign up for three weeks of pain, exercise and no mobile phones?

When I arrived at the ferry terminal in Picton however, I discovered there were plenty of people willing to give up their holidays to go bush-bashing in the Malborough Sounds. I was met with 150 eager-faced, clean-looking students.

Needless to say, their tidy town clothes and styled hair didn’t last long.

Our transformation into ‘Outward Bounders’ began within three hours of arrival at Anakiwa. Nothing like a run on the beach and a roll in the wet sand with the crabs to start off a course! We put mud on our faces and then washed it off in the sea. We were washing away the masks we wear at home and school, or with friends.

Enjoying the Journey

To find out what are you truly capable of, of course! Just like GENEVIEVE STEVEN, a Year 13 student at Craighead Diocesan School did.

I had never thought seriously about doing an Outward Bound course. It sounded like a lot of hard work and I was worried about my current fitness level. The question running through my mind was: why would any sane person sign up for three weeks of pain and exercise?

A Certain Magic

Party Time Over three weeks we were taken back to basics. With no technology, we wrote letters. The lack of communication with the outside world that we so heavily depend upon forced us to live in the moment and focus on our watch – our team mates – and the tasks at hand.

We sailed, tramped, kayaked, completed high ropes and rock climbing courses, spent two nights in the bush alone and ran a half marathon. Each morning we had Party Time; 20 minutes of exercise, including press-ups, squats, a 3.2km run and a dip in the sea. Followed by a cold shower and breakfast.

We learnt to navigate using a map and compass. We also learnt to sail the cutters, the same style of boats used

by Captain Cook to move his men between land and sailing ship. We did our kayak training in the sea, where we learnt to roll the kayaks and became

The highlight of the course for me was the ‘journey’. We got to use our tramping and sailing skills to decide, as a watch, where we wanted to go.

We started with four days tramping and sleeping under tarpaulins each night. We climbed Mt. Riley, Mt. Baldy, Mt. Sunday and Mt. Royal and were rewarded with spectacular views of Marlborough.

Next came two days of sailing, where we saw dolphins and luxury yachts and even found a few hours to row when the wind died down. We were one of the lucky watches – the longest time we rowed for was five hours.

We sailed out to Ships Cove, where Captain Cook landed and visited Motuara Island, a bird sanctuary. We slept that night on the cutter under tarpaulins and the night sky was amazing. We even had the privilege of using a Resene paint bucket as a toilet.

Despite this one slightly primitive experience, sailing was incredible.

We had beautiful weather and plenty of wind.

Aspects of all the activities challenged me, but the tasks never seemed impossible, due to the unbelievable support of my instructors and watch mates. Our mindsets were transformed and we soon believed anything was possible. If things didn’t go to plan, we could either laugh or cry. Tears were certainly shed, but usually as a result of laughing too much.

The leadership aspect of the course made us focus on what exactly a good leader is and what we look for and appreciate in a great leader. We each got the opportunity to lead our watch for 24 hours and received feedback at the end of it. I gained a huge amount from this activity and I now feel I am more confident and better at dealing with people.

From day 1 to 21, I loved every aspect of the course. I reluctantly left Outward Bound, exhausted but buzzing with motivation and excitement.

There is a magic at Outward Bound that gets under your skin, through the hard work you do and the strange circumstances you are placed in. It is a magic that cannot be described and only understood once it has been experienced. The hardest thing about my job is.... well, there are a few challenges involved in airline flying; managing time pressures and the stress of busy turnarounds at odd times of the day pushes you both mentally and physically. Adapting to new people and new places each day is another enjoyable challenge.

My training at CTC was... an intensive course that demanded a lot of work outside of the Monday to Friday, nine-to-five – which, in hindsight, prepared me well for the airline industry. CTC has an excellent training system that gave me the tools to integrate skills learnt from the very start with the work I’m now doing.

PATH TO THE TOP Whatever your goal in life, there is more than one way to the top, writes TANIA TEBBUTT.

For a large portion of school leavers, the automatic move is to head to uni, rack up a student loan, claim all course-related costs and hit the books. Although uni is an excellent option for many people, it’s not your only one.

According to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), in 2010 just 30% of all school leavers were actually going on to study at university. So, what are the other 70% of school leavers doing? And more importantly, is it working?

The Gap Year... ...Or, as we Kiwis like to call it, ‘The Big O.E.’ Throwing caution to the wind and stepping out of your comfort zone is both scary and exhilarating!

First you will need to decide on a destination (or destinations; it’s a bit addictive!) Next – assuming you’ll be doing some work – ensure that you are legally allowed to work there.

Lots of overseas countries love NZ employees; we have a reputation for being friendly, adventurous and hardworking. For some countries you need to apply for a working visa. In places like the UK and Canada, Kiwis under 30 can work for up to two years with a visa.

Jobs can range from working as a nanny to administration, construction,

hospitality, farm work – or some people even go overseas to play sport for local clubs. You’ll acquire problem-solving skills, independence and resilience, as you are guaranteed to be challenged with different cultures, social norms, language and home sickness.

An O.E. is especially good if you’re not yet sure what you want to do ‘with the rest of your life’. You’ll travel, meet loads of new friends, experience different cultures and generally broaden your perspective. Plus, you’ll probably find that you discover a new direction and some clarity with what you do want to do next.

Coming home, you will be prepared to take on anything. Start your study, start a business or share some new ways of doing things in your local community.

Start a Modern Apprenticeship Matt finished high school after 6th Form (Year 12) and began a threeyear apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering.

He loved being hands-on; instead of being stuck in a classroom learning theory, he was able to apply the skills he was learning straight away.

Being a hard worker and known for his attention to detail, Matt was given a fantastic opportunity; to work for the NZ Kawasaki Motorcycle team, in both NZ and Australia, supporting motocross riders on the national circuits. From there he launched into the Van Bers Yamaha

team and provided mechanical support for world champion Katherine Prumm, as she travelled the pro circuit in Europe.

Proof that his apprenticeship skills are not only valued but transferable, Matt then moved from motorbikes to petrol and chemical gas plants. He now works as a contractor on exploration rigs across Australia and earns in excess of $220,000 per year.

Matt is very happy with the recognition he has received and the decision to skip the conventional uni path and “go to trade school”.

Do a Short Course Industry training courses are a great alternative to more formal tertiary education. They are shorter courses, in a more hands-on learning environment.

Get Some Experience Like many, Gareth left school thinking he would go to university. When he didn’t gain university entrance, he persevered.

He started a six month bridging course at polytech, with the view of starting a Bachelor of Science (BSc) when he was done.

When the six months was up, he was sick of being broke and was starting to lose confidence in the decision to do a degree.

Instead of carrying on with plan A, he decided to go out and earn some money, giving him some time to think about what he really wanted to do long-term.

Join the Forces You are able to join the Army or Navy straight from school, without any pre-training. The first few months are usually dedicated to basic training and adjusting to life in the force. Once you have that under your belt, the options are endless.

Aidan chose to join the Navy after leaving school. After completing his basic training, he took a shine to electronics, so he started a four-year ‘on course’ trade. As part of this he spent time at sea and travelled the world.

He has worked in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Vietnam, England, Indonesia, the Philippines, Samoa, Tonga, Noumea, Tokalau, Cook Islands, the US – and now he is in Afghanistan.

Learning opportunities don’t usually stop once you are qualified. Aidan loves electronics and so went on to up-skill in IT. The qualifications he has obtained while in the Navy are highly regarded in the industry and are at no cost. Aidan is being paid to work, travel and learn.

This can be a great option if you’re not really sure what you want to do – you can try something out without a huge commitment of time or money.

Just as there is more than one way to skin a cat, there is more then one way to the top. Your skills, knowledge, experience and can-do attitude don’t have to come hand in hand with a framed degree and a picture of you wearing a funny hat.

I did get a degree and I’m happy with my decision, but as a Human Resources Consultant I have spent

opportunities. “Once you are temping, you have access to all of the adverts for permanent jobs,” Gareth explains. He ended up working in laboratories, doing science-based work for the same money that he would have if he had done the BSc. Gareth experimented with various roles, from tradesman’s assistant to hammer hand. He even worked on a trophy deer and pheasant lodge, breeding pheasants.

Gareth has worked his way up to the top several times before leaving to try something new. He proudly notes that at points in his career he has been earning more money than two out of his three sisters, all of whom have degrees.

Gareth’s advice: • Have a good work ethic and a tidy appearance. These can go much further than a qualification on a piece of paper.

• Always back yourself. If someone asks if you can perform a task, the answer is never ‘no’. Instead, try ‘I’ll give it a go...’ or ‘I’m not sure, could you teach me?’. If you keep this up, you will soon be able to say ‘Yes, I can’

Top Tip Start by brainstorming. Write down all the things you like to do, all the things you’re good at, and all the things you’d like to be good at! This will give you lots of ideas for directions you might take. Then you can get online and start researching your options!

Tell us a little about yourself, Tim. I was born in Nelson and graduated from Garin College in 2010. I then completed a Certificate in Outdoor Education and Recreation before starting the Superyacht Crewing programme at NMIT. I‘ve grown up sailing, playing basketball and tennis, so have always been into sport.

Why did you choose to study the Superyacht Crew programme?

At a Careers Expo at school there was a tutor promoting the course. It sounded like a bit of me, so I decided to take it on!

What aspects of the programme were most valuable to you?

We learnt so much that was very useful. Boatmaster knowledge was a big plus. Firefighting and Sea Survival were great fun and challenging. Having these right at the start of the course brought the whole group together. Our tutor knew a lot about the industry, so he was a great resource for us and was reassuring in the areas we were nervous about.

Plus, he brought people in that have been working in the industry, to give us perspective and suggestions, which was really helpful.

What has been the most exciting part?

Fire fighting for sure! Intense! The whole class really stepped up to it and the teamwork factor really came out, which made everyone enjoy it.

What appealed to you about this area of study?

What are the facilities and activities like on your course?

Sailing and getting paid! I’m fine with a bit of work and I’d like to end up eventually skippering the yachts.

Also, meeting like-minded people was appealing and this class turned out to be an amazing group of young people. We all became a really tight pack.

Fantastic. There are two different boat trips for different purposes and three different powerboats to play with! There are trips to wineries, pools and firing ranges. It’s very practical, instead of just learning everything in the classroom.

How did you find the tutors and your classmates?

The tutors were great because they all specialised in their own area, instead of having one solo tutor teaching bits of everything. My classmates were the best. We all became very good mates, even out of class.

Would you recommend the Superyacht Crew programme to others?

Yes! With the amount of qualifications you get, for the fairly low price, you get so many practical life skills!

You will learn to sail, drive power boats, fight fires like a fireman, shoot shotguns and .22s, plus restaurant service, how to make coffee and cocktails and so much more.

Some students also did some stewarding on a charter yacht. The course was worth it and very useful.

Are you excited about your future and the opportunities ahead of you?

Yes! I’m about to go to Europe and start looking for jobs on yachts there. I really have no idea what to expect, but I know it will be great. In the long-term, I want to become a skipper on a superyacht, which will mean I need to get some more qualifications, sea time and things like that. I am very much looking forward to that and I’m so glad of where this course has led me.

The 21-year-old is the Service Advisor for Waikato Toyota’s vehicle service team. She is responsible for booking vehicles into the workshop, meeting the customers, scheduling the work, managing invoices and finally handing the cars back to their owners.

Kelly completed her National Certificate in Automotive Parts and Accessories Merchandising almost three years ago. She’s been thinking about extending her skills and knowledge ever since, so when a workmate mentioned the MITO scholarship she seized the opportunity to apply.

Kelly says, “This scholarship enables me to complete MITO’s First Line Management Programme, and move up to a position with more responsibility and eventually into a management role.”

The Amazing Spider-Man From: Activision For: Xbox 360

It’s been six months since Dubai was destroyed by the mother of all sandstorms. Thousands of lives were lost, including those of American soldiers sent to evacuate the city. Dubai now lies buried under sand. What was once the most opulent city on Earth is a barren disaster zone.

If you haven’t seen The Amazing Spider-Man at the movies but are planning to, I wouldn’t recommend playing the game first. It is an epilogue to the film.

Plot spoilers are thrown out there from the moment you press ‘start’, so be warned.

Now, a mysterious radio signal is picked up from Dubai, and a Delta Recon Team is sent to infiltrate the city, locate survivors and radio for evacuation.

For what is pretty much an average game in terms of graphics, storyline and mission variation, The Amazing Spider-Man is undeniably great fun to play.

Delta Team soon discover that they are far from alone.

The city is embroiled in a battle of factions, including their own brethren who have abandoned their posts and loyalties. It’s ‘kill or be killed’; danger lurks around every corner.

With around 10 or so hours of mission play, Spider-Man isn’t a long game by any stretch of the imagination.

The third-person combat revolves strongly around taking cover and making intelligent choices, but the cover system is mapped to the melee button. Quite often you’ll punch a concrete block instead of sliding into it or vaulting over it – which means your untimely demise. Other than that, there’s little to complain about.

The Line is very story-driven and demands to be played to the finish. The six-hour campaign means it’s a top quality rental, as there’s nothing in the multiplayer to justify purchasing for longevity’s sake.

Sorcery

From: The Workshop For: PS3 Move Historically speaking, as a sorcerer’s apprentice, you’re almost compelled to stick your nose (or wand) into things that you don’t understand.

As you set out to fight all manner of evil with your trusty feline accomplice, you must learn to utilise the PlayStation Move controller to cast spells. The Move system works flawlessly: You use the thumbstick to move around, the trigger to centre the camera and the controller itself to cast spells to eliminate the enemy.

The game is fast-paced and because pinpoint accuracy is an unachievable dream with PS Move, there is a handy lock-on system. There’s also a userfriendly shield to block incoming attacks.

Sorcery’s graphics are a genuine highlight. The views and landscapes are a delight, as are the characters and special effects. This is surprising, considering it is aimed at a younger audience. You really have to look hard to notice any faults.

Sorcery is one of those games that you fully expect to be awkward and ill-executed, but – surprisingly – it’s an absolute joy to play. However, it is a little short, at about five to six hours.

HD Collections have become a bit of a trend lately. With the current generation of consoles in the twilight of their lifespan, it’s no surprise that some of the successful franchises are being spruced up in HD and re-released.

Easily the best part of the game is web-slinging your way around the cityscape of Manhattan. There are 700 comic book pages hidden around the city and finding them allows you to read them back in the main menu.

The camera is tight in behind Spider-Man as he twists and contorts while swinging from building to pole to building again. With the press of a shoulder button, time slows down enough for you to spot the next landing or swing point. This web-slinging action is well executed. It more than makes up for the disorienting and lacklustre combat within the buildings themselves.

All three games have been faithfully presented in their original format, with no alterations to storyline or gameplay. They look superb with the graphical upgrade.

It’s great to see how gameplay has progressed throughout the series: Ratchet & Clank 3 is very different to Ratchet & Clank. The first game even has its annoying control system that will see you walking off ledges more often than not.

Overall, this is a must-own for any veteran or newcomer to the series. With the polished visuals, Ratchet & Clank 2 and 3 could hold their own with any current new release.

Dragon’s Dogma From: Capcom For: Xbox 360

Dragon’s Dogma is an RPG that borrows heavily from games such as Skyrim and Dark Souls, but manages to etch out a place of its own.

The game starts off with your character foolishly attempting to exact justice on a dragon who razed a fishing village. Unfortunately, his rather rusty sword isn’t much use and the dragon (quite graphically I must add) eats the heart of our hapless protagonist.

Fear not, as our heartless friend gets reborn as the ‘Arisen’ and embarks on a journey to get his heart back.

That’s pretty much it in terms of storyline for the 35 hours or so it takes to get to the climax. A little love interest is throw in, just to make things interesting.

The class of character you choose shapes how combat plays out, but as you level up you can inherit traits from other classes, to mix things up.

The game world is expansive and often beautiful, with some horrific monsters and pitfalls if you venture off the beaten track.

Dragon’s Dogma is a game that improves with time, but has some moments of brilliance. There are also some that you can only sit and shake your head at in embarrassment.

Project Zero II: Wii Edition From: Tecmo For: Wii

You can’t beat a quality survival horror game! The now decade-old Project Zero series is renowned for being one of the best ever made.

Mio and Mayu are twin sisters. When Mayu wanders off, following some mysterious red butterflies, they get lost in a forest. They stumble across a village haunted by the tormented souls of the previous villagers. It’s up to Mayu and her Camera Obscura (that inflicts damage on ghosts) to get them out of there.

There are no guns, no knives, and no leap-out-of-yourseat moments – just a constant feeling of unease and vulnerability.

Project Zero II is one of those genre-defining games, and it looks amazing on the Wii. But the same console that has breathed new life into it has also proven to be the ball and chain holding it back from greatness.

For a game that seemed perfectly suited to the pointand-look nature of the motion sensor and Wii remote, Tecmo have bizarrely opted for tilting the controller in combination with the analogue stick and buttons. It takes a long time to come to grips with, but those with plenty of patience will be well rewarded.

The genre of R&B is exceptionally wide.

Legends James Brown, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston all fall comfortably under the umbrella, as do today’s stars; Beyonce, Usher and Alicia Keys. Because there is only so much you can fit on a three-disc album, you can understand if some artists got the snub, particularly older ones, seeing as Ministry of Sound have a young audience.

It was a surprise, though, to find that Anthems R&B not only failed to feature any of these artists, but was a bizarre assortment of forgotten one-hit-wonders and more recent b-grade number ones.

The expansion and unfolding of Nicki Minaj has been such an entertaining journey to watch. Ever since Bedrock, I’ve thought the female rapper is pretty, pumped and peculiar. just a few surprising appearances, and even when the likes of Boyz II Men, R Kelly or Salt ‘N’ Pepa were listed, it was with their lesser-known hits.

Between a display of barely recognisable songs, there were a few well-known jams such as This is How We Do It by Montell Jordan and The Boy Is Mine by Brandy & Monica.

If Anthems R&B was presented as plainly a collection of R&B songs, there would have been no evident issue with it.

However by it being labelled it as threediscs of anthems, it is expected that at least most of the songs will have a solid reputation, and unfortunately the tracks on this collection don’t – PRASHAN CASINADER

Although this can often ruin an album, Hot Chip were controlled enough to keep the transitions, between and within songs, smooth.

What the band has made here is some highly listenable tunes which grow on you after each play. The overall feel is a perhaps too-sleek and synthesised river of sound that nevertheless leaves you feeling positive – ELOISE CALLISTER-BAKER

Marina & The Diamonds Electra Heart This Welsh pop sensation was popular a few years back in England, with their first album The Family Jewels.

Electra Heart is full of catchy, new wave, electro-pop songs that are bound to get you addicted.

It’s not all happy pop songs though; some of Marina’s lyrics show strong personal opinions of love, relationships, society and life. Teen Idle is one for the girls; it’s about being a depressed teenager and coming out of it through the process of growing up.

Roman Reloaded is vibrant and animated but I understand how it could give you a headache when listening to all the songs in one go.

If you like other Ministry of Sound mixes I definitely recommend this album! There is one dilemma: once you have listened to it, you will never get it out of your head – NICHOLAS HUMPHRIES

An electronic leap of faith by American musical scientists Liars, has led to the release of their unique sixth album, WIXIW.

As is usual with Hot Chip, this album is made up of eclectic, electric pop music that reveals an array of influences, from minimal techno to folk-rock.

The rest is a mixture of repetitive electric beats overlaid with soft, tuneful vocals that are easy to dance to. After several listens, it is clear that the band tried to pursue a lot of different ideas, going

This album, above all things, has shown me that she can hold her own. Her vigorous manner works for her. She proves that women can voice the way they feel in an aggressive manner too!

She uses her Trinidadian background to add to her flavour.

Motion Sickness is a celebratory anthem of blaring brass and synth. How Do You Do is more catchy and casual, with moments that remind me of TV on the Radio. Let Me Be Him makes the album for me. It’s a seven-minute journey showing of Hot Chip’s talent as a band, blending together the strengths of its members.

Ministry of Sound R&B Anthems Ministry of Sound has garnered a strong reputation for their trending mixes and aesthetic branding. Their dance music compilations are regarded as more of a side project for their label, and it shows.

Anthems R&B is not a good reflection of their success.

Whether your thing is electro-pop, happy vacuuming music, or forgotten one-hitwonders, our dedicated team of reviewers has tested the musical water for you!

Not known for such processed beats, the ever-experimental Liars has delved into a world they haven’t previously explored.

So far this new land seems to have welcomed them with open arms.

WIXIW (pronounced “wish you”) is their most accessible album yet. It carries elements of pop, but remains typically true to the band’s original sound, which is wholly unpredictable and unrefined.

The first single, No. 1 Against the Rush is a perfect example of how Liars has managed to seamlessly introduce synthesisers and sequences into their line-up. The opening track, The Exact Colour of Doubt slowly introduces the listener to what the boys are about these days; confusing, contradicting and taking the listener to another place.

Instead of breaking rules, Liars is altogether exempt, and it’s a welcome relief to listen to WIXIW. It can hold its own, without being carried by mass influence from other bands.

Although, as with any other experimental album, WIXIW has it’s bad moments. Cool and brooding Octagon, for example, feels misplaced.

The record comes full circle, ending with Annual Moon Words which, like the opening track, is warm and optimistic.

The lyrics may as well be, “well done, you made it/ now go on, give WIXIW another whirl.”

At least, that’s what I heard – ANGELENE MILLS

San Cisco Awkward Marina’s unique voice adds to the emotion of each of song. A soulful voice singing these disco-pop anthems is something different and has captured the attention of pop lovers all over the world.

There are some songs I think should have been left out, sounding like cheesy, early-90’s pop. Don’t let this put you off, as the rest of the album will have you playing it on repeat – LAUREN BRAMLEY

If you need some music to put you in the mood for vacuuming, or just need a happy 20 minute break from study, then Awkward is the one for you. It is an energetic, well-crafted five-track offering from the Fremantle, Australia-based outfit.

There are fast and fun indie-pop numbers, a sprinkling of Arctic Monkeys and a touch of singer/songwriter love.

San Cisco’s up-beat, addictive, singalong choruses don’t even need words! I dare

you to stop singing “oooooh la la la/ oooooh la la la, la”.

By Lauren Conrad The Fame Game tells the story of four girls and their battle for fame, whilst taking part in a reality TV show. It allows the reader to realise that although Hollywood and fame may seem like an easy life, it actually comes with a lot of challenges and hard decisions.

This book is well written and links each of the four girls together so that the story flows. Lauren creates many twists and turns for every character. She portrays the stress, deception, lies and politics of reality TV, and the apparent fun side of fame as well.

This book would appeal to almost any female and maybe even some males; it is written in such a way that it grips you from the very beginning and leaves you wanting more at the end. It is very easy and light to read so you can be in almost any mood to read it and it never gets boring – EMMA DICKINS

Hazel Grace Lancaster is 16 and dying of thyroid cancer. But this is more than just another cliched Nicholas Sparks cancer novel.

Augustus shows her what it is like to live, hope and to be loved. Together, Hazel and Augustus embark on an Amsterdam adventure to ask Peter van Houten, the author of Hazel’s favourite book, how his novel which finished midsentence really ended. It seems that Hazel’s life depends on van Houten’s answer, and yet her idol is not whom she expects.

The Fault in Our Stars is about novels, relationships, and lives that are cut off too soon – and end mid-sentence. John Green effectively captures this in the intelligent and sparky voice of Hazel Grace.

This is a novel that will be read voraciously, and it is also a novel that will break your heart. If you are going to read any young adult novel this year, make it The Fault in Our Stars and pass it on to your friends and family. It is a beautiful story that will live on in your mind for weeks – HOLLY HUNTER

was forced to lie to a society that would never accept her for who she wanted to be. I found this aspect to be particularly interesting and by the end I felt more aware of the difficulties these past societies faced, especially in relation to divorce and homosexual relationships.

Laura Moriarty does a very good job in regards to the history side of the story and her style of writing is easy and enjoyable to read. Overall it is a great book and for maximum enjoyment, I recommend that you do not read the back – SHARON MCCOSKRIE

Big Nate: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

By Lincoln Peirce Let’s be honest, no matter how old you are, you like comics. I have often tried to deny this, but when I was sent this book to review, all the good memories of comic reading came back to me and I sat down straight away and read the entire book.

This realistic tale of severe family violence is unforgettable and touching.

I really enjoyed reading about the struggles of the two twin sisters that star equally in this novel, as it switches from one point of view to the other. The

I had found out everything that I expected to discover from the blurb and so part three felt like a boring and irrelevant ending that dragged on for too long. If I had not been given such misleading expectations at the beginning, this book would have received higher praise from me. I wanted to leave the characters in their happy ending from part two and not see their future struggles and conflict all the way to death.

This novel is written with such skill that you feel as if you are apart of the mystery; you are involved and it is impossible to put down. Mead has managed to write about vampires and humans without it seeming fictional and unrealistic; this is what perfects the novel.

Black Heart Blue

They have suffered in silence their whole lives under the watchful, judgemental eyes of their parents. Going to high school is the biggest opportunity of their lifetime, opening up the possibility of freedom. While Hephzibah reaches desperately to escape, Rebecca is more timid – and in the end, Rebecca is the one chasing the dream of a life without constant fear.

The blurb on the back of this book suggested that it was about the famous Louise Brooks’ first trip to New York and the adventures of her and her chaperone, Cora. Beginning in 1922 and going all the way to 1982, the book started off really well and was interesting and entertaining. However, by the end of part two it felt like it should be ending there.

My favourite thing about this book is the fact that Rebecca, unlike her twin, is not the usual beauty that we expect, but is in fact physically disabled since birth.

Peirce provides everything that is needed in a good comic book; a simple plot, great drawings and a few characters that do everything that you wish you could have done as a kid. It is a Garfield-style collection of short stories that follow a common theme – not of lasagne – but of Nate’s dislike for school and his love for his fellow schoolmate, Jenny.

I wouldn’t normally read a novel like this, but it sure drew me in and kept me hooked. I highly recommend it – LACEE PILGRIM

Nate is the stereotypical primary school boy who cannot understand school, teachers, rules and how the world cannot revolve around him. This may make him

Chunky beef curry

• 1 tablespoon oil • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic, finely crushed • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger • 2 tablespoons mild curry powder • 600g lean beef, cubed • 1 teaspoon salt • 420g can chopped tomatoes • 1 beef stock cube mixed with 1 cup boiling water • 1 cup light coconut milk • 2 x 425g cans new potatoes, drained, halved, or 500g fresh new potatoes • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions Step 1 Heat oil and add onion. Cook over a medium heat until softened. Add garlic and ginger. Cook for a few minutes. Stir in curry powder and heat for 1 minute.

Step 2 Add beef. Cook, stirring over a high heat, until meat is well coated with spice mixture and browned all over.

Step 3 Add salt, tomatoes and stock. Cover and simmer for 1 to 1 1/4 hours, or until meat is tender.

Step 4 Add coconut milk and potatoes. Heat for 5 more minutes.

Garnish with parsley. Serve with mini naan or pita bread.
