Echoes of history and a city reimagined

Nestled in the middle of the South Island’s east coast, Christchurch and the greater Canterbury region greet you with landscapes plucked straight from a fairytale.

Christchurch, also known as the Garden City, is an urban oasis that blends rich history with modernity. The city’s landscape, dotted with picturesque gardens and innovative architecture, is a testament to its resilience and creativity. As the city that rose from the rubble of a devastating earthquake in 2011, Christchurch embodies the spirit of rebirth. As you explore the city, you see the harmony of old and new, where classic Gothic architecture stands alongside modern structures, reflecting the city’s unique journey.

Start your visit in the heart of the city at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Spanning over 52 acres, these gardens are a paradise for nature lovers. Stroll under towering trees, discover vibrant flower beds, and admire the beauty of the Avon River that gently winds its way through the gardens.

Take a leisurely punt down the Avon River, an iconic Christchurch experience that allows you to see the city from a different perspective. Or, visit the Canterbury Museum where you can learn about the region’s rich history.

For a panoramic view of the city and beyond, take a ride up the Christchurch Gondola. As you ascend to the top of the Port Hills, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the cityscape, the Canterbury Plains, and the Southern Alps.

With a huge range of venue options available in the city, from the funky industrial vibes of Milton St Substation, the grandeur of The Tannery or the modern garden setting of Ilex, the city-loving couples will be spoiled for choice.

WWW.MYWEDDINGMAG.CO.NZ | 17

Christchurch also serves as the gateway to the wider Canterbury region. Venture out on a day trip to the stunning Banks Peninsula, where you can visit the charming town of Akaroa, New Zealand’s only French settlement, or go on a wildlife cruise to spot dolphins, penguins, and seals.

For the couples looking for an out of city celebration, take a look at the fairytale forest setting of Arybellas, or Mt Vernon Lodge which offers stunning views over Akaroa Harbour.

The region also offers an impressive network of wedding vendors who can help bring your vision to life. From stunning floral arrangements by local florists and stunning photography by seasoned professionals, to enchanting music by local artists and meticulous planning by dedicated wedding planners.

Canterbury’s thriving culinary scene, fuelled by locally grown produce, fresh seafood, and world-class wines means your catering is sure to impress your guests. Whether you’re envisioning a

traditional sit-down dinner, a relaxed barbecue, or a gourmet buffet, the region’s talented caterers will deliver a feast that’s as memorable as the day itself.

After the celebrations, start your journey as newlyweds by exploring the wonders that Canterbury has to offer. The region is not just a wedding destination, but also a perfect honeymoon spot. From stargazing near Lake Tekapo and wine tasting in the Waipara Valley to soaking in a thermal pool in Hanmer Springs or exploring the vibrant city life in Christchurch, there’s an adventure waiting for every couple.

Accommodation options in Canterbury range from luxury lodges and boutique hotels to charming bed and breakfasts. Imagine ending each day of adventure by returning to a cosy room, sipping on local wines, and reminiscing with your loved one.

Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region have all the makings of a dream wedding and honeymoon destination. It’s not just a place to say ‘I do’, but where every moment is a celebration of love, adventure, and shared tomorrows.

Modern love

My Wedding is thrilled to present our first ever styled photoshoot. Take a peek into our photoshoot showcasing warmth, elegance, and modernity.

In this shoot we’ve embraced a palette of warm yet bright tones, thoughtfully balanced with soothing undertones. Texture plays a starring role, adding depth to the clean, modern setting. Delicate pearls on the veil, the scalloped edge of the cake, velvet ottomans: every element invites exploration and engages the senses.

We are truly grateful to Carrie Duggan for capturing every beautiful detail with passion and creativity. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the talented vendors who contributed to this incredible day.

Carlijn & Hugh

REAL WEDDING

Hugh met Carlijn when she was working as a waitress at The Tea House in Lincoln.

“I first met Carlijn when I was painting the storage garage out the back of the restaurant, she came outside to clear some tables.

I called her over and asked her if she wanted to come and clear away all the spiders for me, she declined.”

Hugh proposed during a weekend away in Banks Peninsula. “I had just been away in Perth for two months for work and said we needed a weekend away. I had planned to propose on a hill or walk somewhere during the trip, but it pissed down with rain for three days straight, so I had to improvise. I ended up hiding the ring in a bag of board game pieces while she was in the shower. Then I suggested we play the board game; this actually took some convincing, as she didn’t really want to play it. This went down doubly bad when I said that she had to set it up, as I wanted her to tip out the bag of board game pieces and find the ring in the parts. Eventually, she tipped the bag out and found the ring. Then I went down on one knee and proposed.”

The couple wed on November 4th, 2023 at Waipuna Estate. Hugh says their theme was “happy and colourful”; they chose shades of bright pink and yellows for their florals for a pop of colour, and their bridal party wore a complimentary sage green.

To add special touches to the day, the couple made some of the details themselves with clever DIY. “We used a Cricut machine and a laser cutter to make our own wooden signs for the wedding, and my mother turned one of our engagement shoot pictures into a format the laser cutter could engrave into the wood.”

Hugh says they loved having a first look before the ceremony. “First look was brilliant; you get to settle the nerves and knock out a bunch of the photography before the ceremony starts; this means you get to spend way more time at your own wedding. We did all our bridal party photos on the hill behind the venue before the ceremony.”

When it comes to planning a wedding, the newlyweds recommend giving yourselves plenty of time. “Give yourself time to book things out in advance. Get a well-organised venue; Sarah at Waipuna was brilliant. She made sure we had crossed our T’s and dotted our I’s.”

Caitlin & Sam

REAL WEDDING

Sam had just moved back to New Zealand after playing professional football in England, when he met Caitlin at a mutual friend’s party.

“He was only meaning to come back for a short time but then he met me and the rest is history!” says Caitlin.

“Sam proposed to me in Queenstown. Our friend who introduced us is a videographer and he pretended that he was practicing making couple films. So, Sam took us all to Moke Lake in Queenstown where he proposed to me and caught the whole thing on video! It was the most special moment. I was SO surprised!”

The couple wed on February 2nd 2022, at Markovina Vineyard Estate. “I am a wedding photographer myself and the staff at Markovina have always made me feel very at home. I also love the ceremony spots and the vines that run throughout the reception venue.”

Their theme was ‘elegant garden party’ which was inspired by the venue itself and Caitlin’s love of flowers.

“I absolutely love flowers so the florals were really important to me, the brief I gave my florist was that I wanted everything to look as if it had just grown there. Everything was perfect, whimsical, soft and delicate.”

“I have always loved flowers and florals so as soon as I tried my dress, I knew it was the one. I had a bespoke headband made from Tania Maras which tied in the flowers and pearls from my dress. I wore the Loeffer Randall bow shoes and I love how elegant and feminine they were. Sam really wanted a beige suit, and as my dress had a beige undertone it worked perfectly. He looked so handsome! My mum made Sam and the groomsmen’s ties from pink linen.”

Caitlin says it was raining the morning of the wedding and thought plans would need to be changed last minute.

“It was a year of pretty much no rain apart from our wedding day and I was so stressed. Our florist rang me to make the final call on the placement of our florals (as they were fixed to the ground and couldn’t be moved). I stuck to my plan and decided I’d have the outdoor ceremony regardless as I wanted my garden wedding! As we were driving to the venue, the skies cleared up and it was 30 degrees and sunny for the rest of the day! I really felt like someone was looking after me in that moment and all my wishes were granted.”

The newlyweds honeymooned in a beachfront chalet in Rarotonga. “It was stunning! The relaxation after planning the wedding was exactly what we needed.”

Caitlin says if she could give wedding planning advice it would be, “Plan as much as you can so that you aren’t stressed on the day. Make timelines and have a clear vision of what you want your day to be. Start mood boards and hire vendors that you would want to be friends with who understand your vision. And most importantly, on the day if something doesn’t go to plan - just go with it! Don’t sweat the small stuff and enjoy it, it truly does fly by.”

Guest list woes

BALANCING LOVE, FAMILY POLITICS AND BOUNDARIES

Putting together the perfect guest list is quite frankly, impossible. It is without a doubt, one of the most emotionally charged tasks that a couple must tackle while planning a wedding.

Wildfolk Photography @wildfolkphotograph - Insta www.wildfolkphotography.com
PICTURED Sasha Bardwell & Shaun Hagger
PHOTOGRAPHER
COUPLE

What should simply be bringing your loved ones together to celebrate love, is quickly overshadowed by family politics and complicated logistics.

Even if parents are contributing towards the day, they simply don’t get the final say. It’s always kind and courteous to consider parental requests and come to a compromise if possible. Ultimately, if you don’t want Uncle Stan who you haven’t spoken to in over a year at your wedding, then you shouldn’t feel obligated to invite him. Ideally, the parent making the request will be understanding of you and your partner’s feelings and leave it at that.

It’s normal for there to be some disappointment. As long as feelings are exchanged with respect and understanding, arguments can be avoided. However, when a simple request turns into a demand, and your and your partner’s values are being disrespected even after expressing your feelings on the matter, it may be time to set some hard boundaries. Remind yourselves this is your special day; your values are what matter most, and your feelings are valid.

While you certainly don’t want to hurt any feelings, you also shouldn’t feel guilty about your decisions. So, what about plus ones? Saying no to plus ones is an easy way to reduce your numbers but can easily upset friends. Etiquette says that married guests should receive an invitation for their spouse. However, for single guests there’s no expectation that a plus one is offered. Whether your budget doesn’t extend far enough for plus ones, or you simply don’t want strangers at your wedding, the easiest way to navigate the conversation is to tell invitees that your venue only caters for x amount of guests and unfortunately, it’s already a full house.

Again, there might be some disappointment, but those who truly love you and want to celebrate with you will accept it and move on.

Remember, you and your partner are a team. Talk honestly with each other and make sure you’re on the same page when it comes to narrowing down the guest list. A general starting point is the rule of thirds. One third your family, one third your partner’s family, and one third you and your partner’s friends. This is a rough guide; it won’t always balance equally but it will give you a good starting point. Another way to go, is each of you write a separate list of your must-have guests.

Give yourselves two minutes to write down the most important people; these lists should be the people you absolutely cannot get married without. Then sit together, exchange lists, and build on them from there. These initial lists are telling, if aunt Muriel didn’t cross your mind when you were thinking of your favourite people, then her absence probably won’t make or break the day.

The sad truth is, weddings bring out the worst in some people. Those who are supposed to be our biggest supporters, become entitled and loudly opinionated. When it comes to the guest list, everyone thinks they know what’s best and get offended if your values don’t align with theirs. So how do you create a guest list that works? Stay true to yourselves and drown out the noise.

wedding is all about celebrating love, good times and even better drinks!

One of the most challenging aspects of wedding planning is figuring out how much alcohol you need for a BYO wedding. The first step is understanding your guests. Are they wine lovers, beer enthusiasts, or spirit connoisseurs? Or perhaps a mix of all? This will help you estimate the amount needed for each type of alcohol.

The average consumption of alcohol per person at a wedding is around 1-2 drinks per hour. However, this can vary based on the duration of the event, the time of day, and the drinking habits of your guests. For instance, a daytime wedding might see lower alcohol consumption compared to an evening event.

Depending on your guest preferences, you would determine how much of each option you would provide. It may look something like this:

Beer: 25% Wine: 50% Spirits: 25%

A simplified way to calculate the total number of drinks is to multiply the number of guests by the number of drinks per hour, then multiply by the number of hours the bar will be open, e.g. 100 guests x 2 drinks per hour= 200, then 200 x 4 hours of bar service= 800 drinks.

While the breakdown might look excessive, the shopping list will look different; you won’t be buying 800 drinks per se. Keep in mind a standard 750ml bottle of wine provides five glasses, one bottle of beer is one serving, and a 750ml bottle of spirits usually makes 16 drinks.

You would then consider what mixers you will serve with your spirits, providing the perfect opportunity to create a signature drink for your celebration.

Choosing a signature cocktail is a fun process that involves lots of taste testing and experimenting. Start with your favourite flavours and build from there; however, don’t forget to take your guests into consideration. If you have a guest list of beer drinkers, you may need to reconsider the sparkly pink drink.

Why not lean into your wedding theme and have your signature drink represent the vibe of the day? If you’re having a beach wedding, go for fruity, tropical flavours. Having a garden party? Try something light and botanical.

To help get you inspired, we’re excited to introduce four delicious cocktails from our friends at Matakana Gin, Kaimai Brewing, Kiwi Spirit Distillery, and No8 Distillery.

Trends

In the fast-paced world of wedding trends, it can be difficult to keep up. The era of social media and Pinterest means couples often find themselves overwhelmed with the choices available to them.

The wedding industry is a whirlwind of fleeting trends, making the decision making process seem like an endless maze.

While it’s exciting to incorporate modern touches, it’s important to remember that your wedding day is about you and your partner, so it should reflect your unique personalities. Before diving headfirst into a sea of trends, take a moment to identify what holds the most value to you. Is it good food, fun entertainment, or extravagant flowers? Once you’ve narrowed this down, you can then find a trend that aligns with your vision.

Dani & Will

REAL WEDDING

Dani met Will in America while she was working as an au-pair and he was serving in the army.

“Will was in the army and was based in the area I lived in. We met through a dating app and connected instantly.”

“Will proposed at a picnic at our favourite place in Washington D.C (where we lived in America). It was a sunset picnic and the place is a grassy field that overlooks the city. The best part about it is that no one is ever there. He had me up dancing and when I turned around, he was on one knee.”

The couple married on February 17th to make the most of the summer weather. “I dreamed of having my wedding by the lake because I grew up in Rotorua surrounded by lakes, so it was super special to have our wedding where we did. Peppers On The Point is absolutely stunning, you have the option for an outside ceremony or one inside the chapel. We chose the chapel as it has an amazing view out over the lake and meant everyone wouldn’t be overheating outside.”

Dani says their colour scheme was her favourite colour sage with white and gold accents. They chose to incorporate lots of florals and fairy lights which created a beautiful setting for their day.

“We had our reception at a rugby club which is a little unique. We are very relaxed people, we love to have fun, are not high maintenance and like to live stress-free. We chose the rugby club as it meant after the ceremony we could just be laid back and enjoy the company of our friends and family and we had the best party ever! We loved our ceremony and the location but we also loved the reception. After, I got to chuck on my cowgirl boots and dance the night away.”

Will’s mum and uncle travelled from America and Japan to attend the celebration. “Having my mum and uncle at the wedding meant the world to me, it wouldn’t have been the same without them. But I also loved how all the people there from Dani’s life who are now my family were all there to celebrate with us.”

Dani says if she could give one piece of advice to couples planning their big day, it would be to give yourselves plenty of time to plan. “It’s a big day with lots of little details that you don’t want to miss (like the song to walk down the aisle which I completely forgot about). And one thing I wish I made more time for was to have time planned to just be with each other after the ceremony. It goes by so fast, and I do wish I had taken a little time just to breathe and have a moment alone together.”

Get your glow on

PRE-WEDDING SKINCARE PREP TO GLOW ON YOUR BIG DAY

Walking down the aisle with a radiant glow is every bride’s dream. It’s not just about the perfect dress or the right shoes, it’s also about feeling confident in your skin.

Your wedding day is one of the most photographed days of your life, so it makes sense to take steps to look and feel confident.

Our skin is actually the largest organ of our bodies, meaning it needs to be taken care of for good health. While we know that healthy skin starts from the inside, there are also things we can do to help from the surface.

The experts recommend starting a skincare routine at least six months before the big day. This timeline gives

your skin plenty of time to adjust to any new products or treatments, and if you have any negative reactions, you have enough time to recover.

A simple and easy to follow routine starts with daily cleansing, followed by treating any concerns such as hyperpigmentation or acne. Then, focus on a hydrating moisturiser and finish with SPF to protect from sun damage. Ultimately, the best skincare routine is a consistent one. Everyone’s skin is different, so it’s important to understand your skin type and its needs.

Remember, there are no quick fixes when it comes to healthy skin. Whether it’s time, effort or money, your skin is an investment. Start early, be consistent, and remember it’s about enhancing your natural beauty and being your most confident self.

CLEANSE

Daily face washing is non-negotiable for healthy skin. Use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils or irritate sensitive faces. This can be paired with twice weekly, mild exfoliation to help get rid of dead skin cells and help encourage cell turnover for smoother and more supple skin.

TREAT

When dealing with hyperpigmentation and hidden sun damage, dermatologists often suggest slowly incorporating a retinol.

The vitamin A derivative, when applied topically, encourages skin renewal and stimulates collagen production. Another essential ingredient for a dull complexion and eliminating sun spots is vitamin C.

It not only combats free radicals responsible for oxidative stress and skin ageing but also works to fade hyperpigmentation.

THE WEDDING PACKAGE

This guide should not replace professional medical advice. Individual skin types may react differently to the same product or treatment.

MOISTURISE

Hydration is the aim of the game! As we age, our hyaluronic levels start to decrease, which makes fine lines and wrinkles more prominent. A topical hyaluronic acid serum, accompanied by a vitamin-rich moisturiser, will help to restore and protect the skin barrier. For some extra love, treat your skin to a moisturising mask.

PROTECT

UV exposure is the top cause of premature skin ageing. UV rays break down essential skin proteins such as collagen, leading to fine lines and pigmentation. It is highly recommended that we use a minimum of SPF30 or higher every single day to protect our skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure.

Beth & Matt

REAL WEDDING - ELOPEMENT

“Matt booked a surprise weekend away glamping in Cabarita, NSW. He popped the question down the beach at sunset - it was the middle of winter and I was wearing my cosy clothes and slippers!

We currently live in Australia and had our big wedding in August 2023. We chose to have a destination wedding in Bali, which meant we needed to do the legal side before we left.”

“Matt’s Nana Maureen was unable to travel to our wedding in Bali. So, we decided to surprise her with our secret ceremony. We told her we were all going to a weekend away as we were home from Australia and to pack nice clothes as we were going to take family photos. We managed to keep it a secret right up until we all arrived at the location; she started to get suspicious when we were popping a bottle of champagne. Once we told her what was actually happening, she was full of tears! It was so special to be able to include her in our marriage and it’s a memory we will never forget.

“It was important to us to have personalised vows, so we opted to have an intimate ceremony with our immediate family at our home in New Zealand prior. We had the most beautiful laid-back day; Matt and I drove the Land Rover down the lake and enjoyed some champagne as we prepared to say I do. It was so laid back; we cracked bottles of champagne, went down to our favourite part of the lake and said I do. Our ceremony was so special, thanks to Henrietta at Hitched by Hen. She really captured what love meant to me and Matt, it was perfect.”

“It was all about simplicity. Our ceremony was centred around the beautiful landscape and being surrounded by the people we love.”

Groom’s corner

MAKING SELF-CARE MORE MANAGEABLE FOR THE GROOM

While the wedding industry seems to be designed to put the bride in the spotlight, let’s not forget that it’s the groom’s big day too!

More and more men are embracing a self-care routine to look and feel their best on their wedding day. However, there is a surprising lack of information to guide them on the best place to start. From general wellness to hair care, it’s important for the groom to be taking care of himself leading up to the wedding.

The most obvious but sometimes the most difficult to implement, is looking after physical health. Regular exercise has a long list of benefits for both mind and body. It’s a great way to relieve stress and boost your mood, as well as improve the quality of sleep and increase energy levels. Diet can also have a significant impact on physical and mental health. Make realistic and sustainable adjustments where you can without restricting yourself. Eat to nourish your body and stay hydrated to ensure you feel confident on the big day.

MENTAL HEALTH

Wedding stress can affect the groom too! Wedding planning can become all-consuming if you allow it. Make sure you are both having wedding-free nights to focus on your hobbies and each other. Take some time for yourself to decompress if you need it, whether you spend a few hours at the gym, gaming, or just getting some extra sleep. It’s important to give your mind a chance to switch off occasionally.

RECONNECT

With months of stressful planning, it’s easy to lose sight of the true goal: marrying the love of your life. Actively plan activities to reconnect with each other with no wedding talk allowed. Even if date nights are out of the budget, you can still create romantic moments and have fun together doing daily activities. Allow the process to bring you closer together, and remember all the hard work will be worth it.

GENERAL GROOMING

When it comes to facial hair, it’s best to decide on the look you want to maintain and stick to it. There’s no point in deciding you want a full beard a week before the day, or growing out a beard for months only to shave it off the day before. Use beard oils on facial hair to keep it soft and healthy, and if you’re shaving remember to use a gentle shaving cream to protect the skin.

SKINCARE

Establish a consistent skincare routine at least six months before the wedding. Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated; an effective routine is all about using simple but high-quality products. Cleanse and moisturise daily, exfoliate once a week, and remember to use sunscreen to protect from sun damage.

A sensational experience

DESIGNING YOUR WEDDING FOR ALL 5 SENSES

Each of your senses has their own stimuli; when we carefully consider each element during wedding planning, we can elevate the day from a celebration, to a well-rounded and memorable experience.

Creating an immersive experience for your guests can take some thought, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. Let’s break down the five senses.

PHOTOGRAPHER

Jess Howzen Photography @jesshowzen.photography- Insta www.jesshowzenphotography.com

SIGHT

When designing a wedding, the first thing we think of is how it will look. We rely so heavily on the visual aspect of the day because that is the first thing guests take in when arriving. Generally, a couple will think of the colour scheme and table details, what flowers they will have and whether the napkins will match or contrast, where will the signage be placed and so much more. When these details come together it creates a stunning first impression.

SOUND

Music is a powerful tool for influencing the energy and ambiance of your day. Consider how you want your guests to feel during certain points of the day. When you walk down the aisle you want them to be moved, during dinner you want them to be relaxed, and when it’s party time you want guests to be energised! Your music should be a reflection of your personalities, but it also needs to set the overall tone of the celebration.

SMELL

Fragrances offer a unique opportunity to subtly enhance the wedding experience. Memories are subconsciously associated with smells; by tying your day together with a special scent your guests can be transported back to memories of your celebration. Whether you incorporate scent by way of your flowers, candles, or even a special perfume, it’s a sure way to leave a lasting impression on your guests.

TASTE

One of the most anticipated parts of a wedding is the food! Catering to a large group of people can be tricky, everyone has different preferences and again, the food needs to reflect the overall vibe of the day. However, once you find that sweet spot, the flavours of your day can be just as memorable as any other aspect. To take the taste experience to the next level, consider a signature cocktail or two for a fun detail. This can be anything from you and your partners favourite drinks, to a specially created concoction that represents you both.

TOUCH

When used mindfully, certain textures can elevate your day. Often overlooked, touch actually begins from the moment your guests open their invitations. Consider the four kinds of touch sensations: cold, heat, pain, and contact. Temperature will come down to small considerations like providing your guests with throw blankets if you’re sitting outside during the evening, or handheld fans to keep them cool in the heat of the day. Your tactile experience is built with aspects such as the fabric of your tablecloths, the soft petals of your fresh flower confetti, and the feel of a cold glass in hand.
