What’s really going on with the economy?

2022 has stepped across the halfway mark and it’s becoming increasingly clear that a swift return to normality and an economy roaring back to life is going to take more time than first thought.

Partially driven by inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions and a good old-fashioned winter of discontent, the daily commentary by economists, politicians and households throughout the country are increasingly featuring prophecies of recessions and depressions. We’re in a crisis, they say.

Things might get better, but they might not. Buckle up.

Let’s look at the facts. Three things are clear.

The first is that no one really knows what is going on with the economy. Economic commentary – much like this – is based on assumptions, which are in turn based on incomplete and inaccurate data, to try and paint a picture of what might be looming around the corner.

The second is that due to all sorts of factors – within our country and outside of it – the economy is doing some strange things. The cost of some goods and services are at a level that is a crisis, the housing market is looking a little dicey and supply chains are causing all sorts of disruptions that have flow on effects.

No one realistically expects the economy to improve as a whole for some time still. Here in Canterbury, businesses think that will be next year. This uncertainty, combined with an inability to predict, creates havoc which is causing problems for both businesses and consumers.

The third thing, is that despite the outlook, our regional economy is in exceptionally good shape and this should be bringing some semblance of comfort to businesses within the region.

Building consents and construction activity in the region are at record-breaking levels. Retail spending has bounced right back to where it was prior to pseudo-lockdown we faced in February and March this year. The labour market, whilst under extreme pressure, is still cranking out new jobs left right and centre. The primary industries and manufacturing sector continue to produce goods for overseas markets, and when they’re doing well, everyone else does well – they’re the backbone of our economy.

On the opposite side, consumer and business confidence are both low.But it’s not a crisis. Our regional economy is not in crisis. Our confidence is in crisis.

But it shouldn’t be, because relative to the rest of New Zealand, we’ve got it good and our economy is in a position where even in the very slim chance that things do get worse, we are in a prime position to come out on the other end intact.

A Union has made contact and has started collective bargaining! What next?

We are getting many requests about how to control costs with the rampant inflation. The stark reality of this is that costs should be being controlled all the time, not just when something unexpected hits.

First, take a deep breath.

The law is that two or more employees can join a union and ask the union to start negotiations for a collective agreement.

The negotiations are called collective bargaining.

When bargaining, both the unions and employers must act in good faith.

When times are tough it’s a very common thing to “cut costs” and there’s definitely some merit in it. But… yes, we used the “but”.

Very helpfully, the government has introduced a code of good faith in collective bargaining, designed to guide the parties on the obligation to act in good faith.

It’s prudent to, first and foremost, assess margins and whether your gross margin is being eroded or is that overheads are accelerating.

There are a number of rules. First, the union must serve the appropriate notice when initiating bargaining. Then the employer must notify all employees whose work the collective agreement covers.

Margins are paramount so they need to be looked at and assessed first. Creating and maintaining an accurate pricing system and policy sets the foundations.

Once the union has initiated bargaining, the legislation captures you.

The parties must then endeavour to agree on the terms of a Bargaining Process Agreement. This is a useful agreement as it sets out how the parties will conduct the bargaining.

Check things first, what are your competitors charging, are you selling what stands you out above the others? Get that value proposition cemented.

If you have not yet obtained expert legal advice by that point, then it is time to do so.

If you’re in manufacturing what is your employee and equipment productivity looking like? Are you even measuring it?

If you’re an employer, avoid informal chitchats with the union prior to or during the bargaining process.

A fundamental business principle is what you can measure you can manage. At a recent assignment we found that employees had “excess capacity” or an ability to be 25 percent more productive – at absolutely no extra cost. Staggering!

Collective bargaining is at times an adversarial process and the union is not your friend.

Remember, the role of the union is to get the best outcome for its members.

The union will set out in writing its claims.

More often than not, the claims will include requests for increased remuneration and non-monetary claims.

Having advised a number of employers involved in collective bargaining, the claims often come as a shock.

On the face of it, they can appear completely ludicrous and detached from economic reality.

However, good faith is simply not a case of outright dismissing such claims. You should support any counterclaims with objective information.

The duty of good faith also requires parties bargaining to conclude a collective agreement unless there is a genuine reason not to, based on reasonable grounds.

If the employer has seriously breached the duty of good faith, thus significantly undermining the bargaining, then in some circumstances the Employment Relations Authority can step in and decide on the terms of the collective agreement.

Bottom-line therefore, is to act in good faith at all times from the get go.

The common kickback we hear is “but our customers won’t pay it”.

That left the client with two options. Shed some capacity or grow into the additional production available. They chose the latter because good staff can be hard to find.

We prefer to call excess costs as profit leakage. By plugging the holes profit immediately stops leaking.

It can happen a little bit here and there but before you know it you are bleeding profit badly. We have yet to find a business that we can’t find a 10 percent improvement in. It involves systematically working through every element of the business.

In terms of cost of goods, can you do a joint venture and get a joint volume discount? Buy in bulk yourself and get a price point? Are prices checked to quotes? Calculate optimum stock levels? Do you monitor wastage?

Wages. How are your rates set? Do they have a direct correlation with your pricing policy? What performance measures are in place? Are they adhered to and corrections made to employee outputs and behaviour?

There isn’t space in this opinion piece to go through all the various overheads and how best to control or reduce them. Make a time to go and see your advisor and thrash this idea out.

As we said – there’s an easy 10 percent in it for you. That’s worth some of your time.

Who will buy your business?

Communication is one of the fundamentals of business.

Maybe you are bored, wish to retire, or it’s just time to get out! There are many reasons people may choose to buy your business.

While it seems like a good idea to speak the same language to ensure everyone is heard and understood, this isn’t necessarily the case with data.

When looking to sell your business it pays to spend some time considering who is likely to buy your business; put yourself in their shoes and detail what they are likely to be looking for.

So, let me ask you one question: What is data?

You may have considered selling your business to a suitable employee or family member, but finding a buyer with the necessary skills, interest and money isn’t always that straightforward.

This is a great question because we hear this word every day without noticing that many industries use this word very differently. When does this innocently simple word become an enigma and everyone uses it to refer to different things without any explanation?

The “list my business for sale” option gives you a great range and a bigger pool of prospective business buyers.

In this article, we are talking about data as prospecting data: a list of companies or individuals who we have identified as our target market. Think of an address book full of names of people who are likely to buy from you - that’s what data is in the context of this article.

There are many types of buyers - they could be after an investment, or taking charge of their own work life and lifestyle.

They may have been made redundant or find themselves out of a job in middle age, or perhaps they are new immigrants looking for a great opportunity.

Today I want to share with you three ways to grow your prospecting list.

All have their own reasons for wanting to purchase a business, and many have already identified the type of business they want to purchase and the price they are willing to pay.

1. You can search the internet to find contact details of businesses. While this is a very common approach and much faster than walking the streets, the downside is that it takes quite a bit of time.

2. You can walk or drive around and try to assess if a business is a good prospect. To me, that seems to be even more timeconsuming, even though many businesses started like that.

3. You can buy a list from a reputable list supplier like whoiswhere.co.nz. This is the fastest way to get a targeted list.

Plus, you can apply different selection criteria and use insider knowledge to achieve better targeting.

Research shows that in 2022, when we have access to all kinds of tools and technology, up to 40 percent of the time sales professionals are using is on searching for whom to call.

Frankly, I find that the whole business data supply industry is failing to support sales professionals.

As a business owner, I feel sad and sorry for those who pay for this time and as a salesperson myself, I find it hard to believe how my peers settle for that.

If you are looking to sell, it can be good to list the type of buyers your business is most likely to appeal to, what they will be looking for and how much they are likely willing to spend to secure your business.

You are looking to match your business with its most likely buyers - these are the buyers that will most recognise the value of your business.

Ensure your business is “sale ready” and pitched in terms of their interests, pushing cashflow, good systems, and a business with a future. These are the things business buyers are mostly looking for - they also want to know that your business can be easily transferred into their hands.

Thousands of businesses change hands every year, with varying levels of success. To get the sale you want, it pays to understand the business sales process, to know who your likely buyer will be, and to have your business well prepared for sale.

The best way to target the prospective buyer and maximise your prospects of a sale, is to ensure your marketing plan has the right mix to reach the right buyers, ensuring the best value for your marketing dollar.

Regardless of whether you find the current climate motivating or exhausting, a challenge we all face at the moment is the importance of putting our precious time and energy into the things that are going to make the biggest difference - executing on the right tasks, at the right time, to help you achieve your goals.

In a business environment where things can literally change by the day, how do you keep your people focused and your business activity moving in the right direction?

It’s reasonably easy to put together a plan, but it’s much harder to execute that plan with razor sharp focus, especially when the ground keeps moving. So, how can you transform good ideas into meaningful actions?

But if this is lacking in some parts of your organisation, where do you start?

The answer typically has three facets. The first is in knowing what needs to be done; to identify priorities you might need to revisit your business plan, have a discussion with your team or talk to other stakeholders to determine your best course of action, match the various tasks to the best person or people for the job, and then supporting them to get on with it and make it happen.

Taking responsibility or being accountable which comes first?

Sometimes responsibility and accountability are viewed as the same thing. They are however slightly different in that taking responsibility is the willingness of an individual to complete what they’re being asked to do in the course of their work.

Being accountable is retrospective and relates to what has been done; it is the willingness of someone to reflect and accept responsibility for the outcomes or results of a project.

Why a shared sense of ownership matters When we are trying to motivate people to carry out their work more effectively, they need to be able to have some influence, ownership and support for change where necessary; particularly when situations and objectives can change week by week.

Accountability need not be a scary word People often think of the word accountability in a negative sense, but it can be a positive depending on how it is applied and lived. By changing the narrative and considering it as a positive thing, then you may find that your team identifies creative ways to increase their accountability.

Responsibility is the cornerstone Whether you are a large organisation with multiple teams, or a one-person operation collaborating with others, how do you help those you work with to take charge (within their remit) in a way that gets results and moves your business forward?

Here are some starting points for creating a culture of responsibility: 1. Make sure everyone knows what is expected of them - this provides surety in their role so they can confidently apply their skills and experience to the job at hand.

You can do this through coaching, ongoing discussions and regular check-ins.

2. Define what is important together discussing objectives and setting goals together can create a shared sense of ownership and the space for people to assume responsibility for achieving them.

Regularly revisiting how these goals are tracking will help people recognise and appreciate progress.

3. Work to the strengths of your team ensuring you have the right people doing the right jobs is always a bonus. When you know what each of your team is best at, you can then position them to work to their strengths. When people can do their best work, they are more engaged and more productive and this leads to better results.

4. Give permission - finally, giving your team agency and permission for their job is critical. If you tell them that you trust them to get the job done, and you demonstrate this, then they are more likely to take ownership and responsibility. This will empower them to take charge, and be response-able!

supervise their methods”. The ideal is that you set parameters, and then allow people to take responsibility for their methods and their results.

• Sharing results and celebrating successes.

As a leader, it is your responsibility to create a supportive culture that allows people to feel safe and/or confident to step up. This could mean acknowledging where people have made a difference, rewarding successes, and using failures as opportunities for improvement by providing training where people might fall short.

Ask them what they would like to be accountable for, while sharing your expectations at the same time. Then work with them to figure out some practical ways you can support them.

Linking these discussions to your organisational goals will help people to see how their contributions make an impact.

Three’s a crowd

The saying goes, three’s a crowd, but in the case of New Zealand’s supermarket duopoly… this couldn’t be further than the truth.

The Government has put supermarkets on notice and the message is clear-cut change at pace to increase competition and be prepared for regulation, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, David Clark, announced in May. “The Government and New Zealanders have been very clear that the supermarket industry doesn’t work. It’s not competitive and shoppers aren’t getting a fair deal.

The duopoly needs to change, and we are preparing the necessary legislation to do that,” David Clark said.

It comes as part of the Government’s formal response to the Commerce Commission’s market study into New Zealand supermarkets.

The report found supermarkets earn $1 million a day in profits, straight from the pockets of Kiwi consumers.

The Commission made 14 recommendations including introducing a mandatory code of conduct to establishing an industry regulator and ensuring loyalty programmes are easy to understand and transparent.

The Government has accepted 12 of the recommendations and is taking stronger action on the other two.

“We are also looking at how to implement compulsory unit pricing on grocery products which will give shoppers the ability to better compare products.

“This work will sit alongside my Budget night legislation to ban supermarkets from using restrictive covenants on land and leases to block competition from setting up shop in certain suburbs and shopping centres. This Bill is currently with select committee.

“Plus, we’re getting ready to launch consultation on the code of conduct that retailers will have to adhere to.

“Whilst we work to establish an industry regulator the Commerce Commission will take on these responsibilities temporarily.

“Once established the ‘watchdog’ will help keep pressure on the grocery sector, by providing annual state-of-competition reviews to keep supermarkets honest, as opposed to the check-in after three years recommended by the Commission.

“It is important to get this right and I look forward to continuing to engage with the grocery industry as we move forward with this suite of changes through the Grocery Industry Competition Bill which I intend to introduce to the House later this year,” David Clark said.

In May Consumer NZ announced it launched a petition asking Minister David Clark to put consumers first and go beyond the Commerce Commission’s grocery market study recommendations.

Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy said “We need more competition to drive down prices and give New Zealanders a fairer price at the checkout.

“No-one is going to start up a competing supermarket without reliable access to wholesale groceries, but currently the duopoly dominates access to wholesale supply.

“The Commerce Commission has recommended the supermarkets consider supplying other retailers. We think this is unrealistic to expect from an entrenched duopoly used to calling the shots. That is why we’re launching a petition.”

Consumer’s Sentiment Tracker has found that people are increasingly worried about the cost of living.

Last year, 63 percent of respondents picked food and grocery costs as their biggest costof-living concern.

BOUNCING BACK

When COVID-19 declared biological warfare on humanity in January 2020, nobody was prepared for the global emergency that was about to unfold.

Now at this point, two and half years later, the pandemic hardly requires an introduction.

Though, while it is fast becoming a fading memory in many parts of the world, here in New Zealand, it’s been a bit of a different story.

With some of the world’s strictest pandemic border controls, the country has reported fewer than 2000 Covid-related deaths since 2020 and has remained closed to all international tourists – up until now.

Indeed, on May 11th it was officially announced that New Zealand would be fully reopen for business come July 31st. Following this news – which no doubt prompted a sigh of relief from business owners around the country – the question on everybody’s lips, is how will our tourism industry bounce back post-Covid?

Silver linings From her first internship at Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism, to her recent appointment as chief executive of the Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) – it is abundantly clear that Rebecca Ingram is well-equipped to lead the sector’s recovery.

Reflecting on the events of the past two years, Rebecca shares her excitement in helping assist the tourism industry return to being a major contributor to Aotearoa’s prosperity.

“I feel privileged to be joining TIA at this extraordinary time in the history of New Zealand tourism – a time when we can truly start moving forward.

“As borders open, optimism is flooding back and our members can’t wait to get back to what they do best – showing the world what makes New Zealand so special,” she says.

While Rebecca acknowledges that the last two years have tested the tourism sector, she says the silver lining is that Covid has provided an opportunity for reflection – a chance to do better, so to speak.

Indeed, between legislative change on freedom camping, to community-led destination

management plans and individual business innovations, Covid – and the forced downtime – has, in many ways, created the perfect storm for significant improvements to be made within the industry.

But while this may sound romantic in theory, Rebecca recognises that it’s going to take a co-ordinated effort by many private and public organisations to get Aotearoa back into consideration again for international travellers.

“Our future is full of possibilities to do tourism brilliantly and live our fundamental values of kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga,” Rebecca explains.

“The importance of our domestic market was placed in the spotlight once lockdowns were lifted.

“Many businesses have considered their products and what they want to offer when international visitors can return… and changes have been made to ensure the New Zealand tourism experience is one that New Zealanders can be proud of,” she adds.

Although it’s still too early to assess how busy it will be, the sense is that summer will be the first big leap forward for the sector, with forward bookings from Australia and USA leading the way – but it won’t be a bounce back to 2019, Rebecca warns.

Putting us back on the map Prior to the pandemic, just 0.03 percent of all global travel came to New Zealand. As Rebecca puts it – “we were the equivalent of a Maserati car.”

“The industry is enormously grateful for the support from Kiwi holidaymakers who provided the lifeblood for many tourism businesses over the last two years.

“The single biggest driver of future visitation is word of mouth, so we want everyone who is here on holiday to go home, share their stories and rave about why New Zealand is a special, memorable, and unique holiday,” she explains.

However, while overseas visitors are gradually beginning to return to tourist destinations around New Zealand, many opportunities to cash in on their presence have been hampered by critical employee shortages.

In order to replace the 72,285 workers that have been lost since the first year of the pandemic, Rebecca acknowledges that the industry will need to offer compelling reasons for people to choose a career in tourism.

Cover Story | Rebecca Ingram to recover to pre-Covid levels. Indeed, between navigating global supply-chain issues and restoring connections to markets – Rebecca and the TIA certainly have their work cut out for them.

Just how might this be done, you ask? To answer this, Rebecca draws on her own personal business experience.

“When I think about my own TIA team and how to care for and retain them, I’m thinking about paying a fair wage, the working environment, and conditions on offer, including training, flexible working and I look at how I can support growth by building skills and capability within the business.

As things kick back into action globally, Rebecca notes that the challenges the industry is experiencing are consistent with those in other countries. However, there’s no doubt one of New Zealand’s largest priorities is rebuilding connectivity to the rest of the world.

“TIA is also working across Government and the industry to look at practical ways to support our members with the workforce they need – most recently this has included advocating for transition plans for tourism as part of the immigration rebalance announced by government,” she says.

“Particularly aviation links to our key tourism and export markets around the world and cruise connections. Auckland and Christchurch airports are working very hard to link New Zealand again,” Rebecca explains.

“Travel enhances human connections, supports critical supply chains, brings vibrancy to communities, and supports other sectors including food production, transport, and services. When tourism is done right, the economic and social benefits are significant,” she says.

The sustainability imperative Between rolling meadows peppered by sprawling vineyards, through to snow-capped mountain ranges and the Southern Lakes; it’s no secret that New Zealand’s natural environment is a major drawcard for overseas visitors.

“

While Rebecca struggles to pinpoint her favourite tourist destination, she reveals she can’t go past enjoying some fine fare against the backdrop of one of New Zealand’s spectacular settings.

“Whether it’s crayfish on the coast in Kaikoura or a sweeping view of the water from a vineyard on Waiheke Island – there’s something really special about eating delicious food while being starstruck by the view,” she says.

However, in years past, concerns have increasingly been raised about our national environment – from Northland to Te Anau – being irreversibly damaged by the congestion and pollution associated with heavy tourist activity.

and our members can’t wait to get back to what they do best – showing the world what makes New Zealand so special.

By way of the borders closing, this pressure has been momentarily relieved. But with overseas visitors finally set to return, can the tourism sector embrace more sustainable practices? Even at the cost of profitability?

Well, as it turns out, with 1,600 businesses already signed up to TIA’s Tourism Sustainability Commitment, many within the industry already have. Rebecca strongly recommends tourist operators educate their customers about the Tiaki Promise, which is a commitment to care for New Zealand, now and for future generations.

”

Rebecca points towards the new $54.2 million Innovation Programme for Tourism Recovery as well as the Government’s Tourism Industry Transformation Plan, as two initiatives that will help turbocharge the sector’s recovery.

“We know that visitors to New Zealand generally want to do the right thing but don’t always know precisely how to do that.

Promoting the Tiaki Promise to visitors is a great way to support kaitiakitanga, as it shows them not only why they should care for your place, but how to do it.

“We are also pleased to see the new investment of $2.975 million in the i-SITE network which will ensure the network is fit for the future,” she adds.

“TIA also supports the Destination Management Planning that is underway in many regions as this ensures tourism in our communities is reflective of what each community wants,” she adds.

In addition to this, $1.55 million dollars has been specifically allocated to support TRENZ, New Zealand’s largest international businessto-business travel and trade event. Support, of which ensures TIA can start planning and preparing with confidence for 2023, which is set to be a two-day event held in Otautahi, Rebecca explains.

Though, perhaps most importantly, it is vital that we have healthy, thriving businesses that can focus on giving back to their communities rather than simply survival, Rebecca says.

Moving forward, Rebecca has faith that in the vibrant near-future, visitors will remain at the core of the Aotearoa experience – whether they have travelled from the neighbouring town or halfway around the world.

“It is important to retain a long-term view and continue investing in the infrastructure needed by both the visitor and resident economies.

Demonstrating guardianship of New Zealand can be done more easily when businesses are financially sustainable,” she reasons.

Decrypting cryptocurrencies

Money's a funny thing.

A paradox in itself; it can serve as a source of immense pain and of intense pleasure.

After investing in Bitcoin himself, he established BitPrime – a full-service cryptocurrency retailer – in early 2017, to help facilitate such investments within the New Zealand community.

Ross explains that to properly understand the application of cryptocurrency, one must first hold a basic understanding of ‘blockchain’ – the technology that most cryptocurrencies operate on.

Indeed, historians generally agree that money — in some form or another — has played an instrumental role in society for at least, the last Put simply, a blockchain is a system of 5000 years. recording and distributing information.

For this very reason, it can quickly become worthless if too much is printed.

Such issues deeply frustrated one pseudonymous individual by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto. So much so, he hatched a plan to invent a form of exchange that was immune to such unpredictability. One evening on January 3rd 2009, just that he did.

But, upon the advent of Nakamoto’s currency, there were no paper stacks, nor nickel, aluminium or copper coins in sight. Merely, 31,000 lines of code and an announcement posted via the world wide web.

Whilst he wasn’t to know it then, his cryptocurrency – ‘Bitcoin’, as it came to be recognised – has since become one of the most controversial commodities in circulation.

Said to be gold’s digital equivalent, it’s certainly not something to be missed.

Breaking it down Much like Mr. Nakamoto, Ross Carter-Brown, chief executive at BitPrime New Zealand, first became interested in cryptocurrency 14 | www.canterburytoday.co.nz

Most importantly, the key property of this technology is that once information (such as transactions of a cryptocurrency) is added to the blockchain and encrypted with a hash, it’s permanent and immutable. In other words, it can’t be tampered with.

Now, the kicker, Ross says, is that by operating on the blockchain network, cryptocurrency – like Bitcoin – sidesteps the need for a central authority, such as the bank, to regulate it.

This is overcome through using what he calls a ‘consensus algorithm’. Essentially, this refers to a procedure in which all of the users of the blockchain network reach a common agreement to verify the present state of the data spread.

“So, for example if you added some zeroes to your balance, that transaction would get rejected because it wasn’t consistent with the majority of the other copies of the blockchain.

“Does that make things clear, or more confusing?” laughs Ross.

Is it worth the hype?

Here in New Zealand, the main use for cryptocurrency currently tends to be speculative investment, says Ross.

“We’re seeing a lot of individuals in the business community adding cryptocurrencies to their portfolio – it’s becoming much more common,” he explains.

However, being that it’s a newer asset class, cryptocurrency is largely subject to significant upward and downward movements. As to be expected, this often attracts a lot of media coverage.

As enthralling as it can be to think you’ve cracked onto the next big thing, Walsh points out that it’s worth remembering, like most things, “It’s buyer beware – no one should expect to get rich, and they should also be prepared to lose all of the money they put in.”

Bitcoin and beyond Not to be left in the dust, many central banks are increasingly recognising the efficiency of blockchain technology, and are accordingly looking at ways to leverage it.

As to the success of these endeavours – “It really comes down to how each country implements it,” explains Ross.

“We’ve seen the likes of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand actively looking to float what’s known as a central bank digital currency (CBDC).

“But a central bank could design a CBDC that uses a blockchain, yet it could all be managed from centralised data centres, which makes a single point of failure,” he says.

So far as the future of the crypto sector oes – “I’ve lived and breathed this for many years, and I still can’t keep up with every single development.

However, much like with anything, the system has its’ tradeoffs. Like perhaps, if you lose your account and password, you can’t rely on the bank to reset it.

“Also, when things are decentralized, it’s hard to make decisions since there’s not one person calling the shots,” adds Ross.

“The reality is it’s very easy to buy, but the wider use of crypto is still in its infancy,” he says.

“It’s ultimately controlled by the users rather than a political body,” he explains.

This enables cheaper and speedier processing of transactions and protects users from issues beyond their control – such as political uncertainty and unstable monetary policies.

Water waste Ensure your building isn’t leaking, ensure taps are off when not in use, and no machines are using water. If the water meter reading changes overnight, there could be a leakage problem.

“We got to talking about money and our personal finance journeys. It was so interesting because it was the first time we spoke about the topic and it was so easy to have the conversation.

Change in the water Three Waters workforce report sets the scene for transformative change When reflecting on the state of Aotearoa New Zealand’s three waters sector, there are a number of complex challenges that warrant swift address.

Strategic goals and recommendations Strategic Goal 1: RESPECT MAORI INTERESTS AND KNOWLEDGE New Zealand’s water sector is entering a new stage of management that incorporates regionalised (and localised) Maori knowledge and oversight.

Commissioning Maori-led research on this topic is needed to progress in a way that upholds the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental right that is currently not being adequately met for one in five New Zealanders.

It’s estimated that the three waters sector will need an additional 6,000-9,000 skilled workers over the next 30 years if we are to meet safe drinking water standards and improve environmental outcomes.

Research triggered by the proposed three waters reform has highlighted in excess of 75,000 small water providers will need to be onboarded by the sector over time following implementation of the Water Services Act 2021, which establishes drinking water standards and regulates all water suppliers.

Recommendation 1: Build understanding of Te Mana o te Wai.

It presents a roadmap with four strategic goals – respect Maori interests and knowledge, create intuitive career pathways, design for career progression and design for success to support the change needed.

These goals are underpinned by 14 recommendations, outlined in the breakout box in this article.

Waihanga Ara Rau General Manager Assurance Mike Grumball says the sector requires a national stategy that clarifies exactly what the workforce needs are for the next 5 to 10 years.

“This strategy will help us to develop long-term career pathways to attract and retain workers.

“We need to look at how we can attract people into the sector who are just starting out in their careers as well as those with transferable skills from other sectors, including people heavily affected by COVID-19.

“We want to ensure greater diversity, and this means a particular emphasis on recruitment and support for Maori, women and people retraining from other sectors.”

Following two interactive webinars to discuss the report, which were held in March and April with strong turnout from industry, Grumball says the next milestone is for industry to work together to act on the intent of the report.

“The next phase of the work will involve collaborating with industry to explore how the fourteen recommendations can be implemented. I strongly urge the sector to get involved in this opportunity to establish the framework for future growth.”

Six Barrel Soda Six Barrel Soda was created by friends Joe Slater and Mike Stewart. They always discussed business ideas and after a lot of experimenting, they eventually learned how to make flavourful syrups for cocktails, mocktails, and sodas at their Newtown, Wellington dive bar.

Their concoctions are made with real ingredients like New Zealand citrus, organic ginger, central Otago cherries, and fair-trade organic cane sugar.

These syrups don’t have preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colours, flavours, and contain about 30 percent less sugar than other sodas, so, healthier than most sodas.

Co-founder Joe says the business just celebrated 10 years in May, marking a decade of accomplishments like creating small-batch, real fruit, low sugar drink syrups, over 120 unique and yummy flavours such as kiwifruit and kimchi, collaborations with partners from local producers to the world’s biggest whiskey company, playing a big part in Wellington’s varied range of great cuisine and drink scene, replacing plastic bottles (their drinks have replaced about 5,000,000 330ml bottles or over 1,000,000 1.5L bottles), supporting people internationally, and influencing others to make delicious drinks at home, he says.

J Friend & Co J Friend and Co was established to give back life to honey and honour the artisan beekeepers. Sharyn Woodnorth and Jeremy Friend have been working in their family business in Christchurch since 2008.

Real Rad Food Real Rad Food is a business all about making rad food with real ingredients for everyone to enjoy. Owner and founder Hannah Mellsop’s business is based out of Papamoa.

The business has been around for five years and operates in a health and wellness space selling various products like supplements, slices, and bliss ball mixes that can be found in many New Worlds.

Most of their business is handled online and most of their loyal followers on social media love and support their business a lot, she says.

“The journey has been full of ups and downs, but we have grown year on year without the need for any investment or debt - something we are really proud of!

“We started out as a market stall and grew to supply many cafes and ship to people’s homes.

“Covid threw a bit of a curve ball at us but we were able to diversify our range and show up on supermarket shelves very quickly after the first 2020 lockdown. Our audience is our greatest asset and has been the reason why we are still here today.”

“We are very proud of our carbon neutral status; our honey has been carbon neutral since the outset and we were the first honey in the world to achieve certification.

“Our motivation then and now continues to be about always producing pure raw single varietal honey ethically and sustainably.

“The majority of our honey is packed in glass.

From 2023 we will be 100 percent plastic-free and all our honey will be packed in glass glass is better for the honey and better for the planet,” Sharyn says.

“Every aspect of our small-scale honey business from harvesting, processing, using traditional methods and packing by hand guarantees the natural goodness, unique flavor, colour, and texture of our honey.

The team has been focusing more on their online business to improve their presence on social media and online sales. They can’t wait for new exciting products to come and the reopening of the border, she says.

Otago Central Rail Trail The Otago Central Rail Trail is New Zealand’s original Great Ride. Covering 152kms from start to finish, the Otago Central Rail Trail follows the former route of the Otago Central Railway. It was New Zealand’s first off-road cycleway and walking trail and continues to go from strength to strength. The compacted gravel pathway makes for super-easy cycling and there are no real steep hills on the trail making it ideal for beginners and recreational cyclists. The trail is appropriate for all ages making this a firm family favourite.

2022 has become the most exciting year in travel since well, the commercial air travel boom of the 1950s, known as the “jet-age”.

Borders are reopening and Kiwis who have been hibernating in our little corner of the world for the last two years are certainly taking advantage of this new found freedom.

Norfolk Island – a small island with a big history

Norfolk Island is a unique and tiny South Pacific island.

At around 5km by 8km, it’s a tiny dot in the Pacific which is rich in culture and history, making it the ideal place for a holiday.

Norfolk Island Regional Council, Tourism and Economic Development team leader, Rose Evans, says it started with the Polynesian settlement. After that the island housed two convict settlements. Once those were closed down, the island was granted to the Pitcairn Islanders.

“Back in the day, there was a ship called the Bounty. There was a mutiny and the captain was thrown off the ship to a smaller boat.

“The leader of the mutiny, Fletcher Christian, took control of the Bounty and they sailed off. They stopped by Tahiti and picked up 12 local women and six men. They took the Tahitians with them and eventually found Pitcairn Island.”

These days, the locals celebrate the arrival to Norfolk every year. In fact, Rose says they celebrated it just last week. “Not only is the history and culture rich but the island itself is amazingly picturesque,” says Rose.

Because it’s a volcanic island, it’s actually pretty high. There are a few low areas where beautiful beaches can be found but it’s mostly rolling green mountains. “You kind of feel like you’re in the country sometimes because the cows roam freely and have right of way.”

But the ocean backdrops remind you you’re on a remote island. “Also, because of the subtropical climate, everything here is green and lush.”

The story continues that they set up camp on Pitcairn Island. They built a village, developed a language and had children with the Tahitian women.

Rose says there’s a few must dos on the island. “You have got to drive to the summit of Mount Pitt. From there, you can get a 360-degree view of the island and it feels like you’re at the top of the world.”

However, the island soon became overpopulated. Because Norfolk Island was a British ruled island from the convict days, Queen Victoria granted the people from Pitcairn Norfolk Island. So, they sailed off to Norfolk Island and have been there ever since.

She says the Captain Cook lookout is pretty awesome too. “Captain Cook landed on the eastern side of the island. Unfortunately, he pulled up where there are some sheer cliffs.

They somehow scrambled up these cliffs to get onto the island.”

“Basically, the locals on Norfolk Island are the descendants of that mutiny on the Bounty,” says Rose.

Around that area are some pinnacle rocks that draw people from all around the world to compete in an outrigger event every year.

Emily Bay is a horseshoe shaped bay on Norfolk Island which is full of coral and quirky fish. It’s a great swimming spot too with a permanently anchored pontoon in the middle that you can swim to and dive off.

The snorkeling is pretty good too.

“They have to paddle right around the island and through this amazing rocky area.”

Norfolk Island is also a natural paradise as it’s home to over forty endemic species of plant.

They also have five species of bird that can only be found on the island. Visitors to Norfolk Island have a real variety of activities to choose from.

From snorkeling in the coral filled bays to scenic boat cruises around the island to hiking in the mountainous terrain, there’s really something for everyone.

If you’re into history and culture, you can become entrenched in the Tahitian influences.

“There’s their dancing, cooking and weaving which you can become involved in on some of the tours,” Rose says.

The locals, very proud of their history, are constantly celebrating their heritage. For example, Norfolk Island has their own flag and language which is still taught in school.

Rose says Norfolk Island really is a holiday destination, neatly summed up by their visitors’ survey.

“The top three things that visitors enjoyed was the beauty of nature, the friendliness of the locals and the culture and history.”

a wellness centre for brain health

The BrainTree Wellness Centre is an innovative, first-of-its-kind in New Zealand project underway in Otautahi-Christchurch that will support people living with neurological conditions to live well in the community.

The BrainTree building was designed by Wilson & Hill Architects and Armitage Williams were appointed as lead builders for the project.

Construction of the building began in March 2021, and the centre was completed in May 2022 and has just opened to the public in June this year.

Thanks to their many supporters, they have raised over $5.6 million for the project.

They are extremely grateful to those people who have contributed financially, in-kind and to all the volunteers who helped them achieve their mission - they couldn’t have done it without you!

They are still seeking like-minded contributors who want to support the project, specifically to help them fund the final fit-out and ongoing operational costs for the centre.

The Canterbury Brain Collective Ltd (CBC) - a registered charity and partnership between Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinson’s Canterbury, and Dementia Canterbury was established in 2017, with the goal of developing a wellness centre for local people living with neurological conditions.

Simon Challies is the founder of BrainTree and a director of CBC. Graeme Marriott is the chairman of CBC. Simon, ex CEO of Ryman Healthcare, was diagnosed with Parkinsons some years ago.

After extensive global research into his condition, he discovered that people living with neurological conditions need to take a holistic wellness approach to be able to live well.

The BrainTree centre will focus on providing innovative evidence-based therapies; a unique total wellness approach through physical activity, social connection & specialist services; and embracing care partners and whanau.

BrainTree Wellness Centre Project The BrainTree Wellness Centre is an innovative, first-of-its-kind project currently happening in Ōtautahi-Christchurch that will support people living with neurological conditions to live well in the community once established.

There is a growing & unmet need to support those living with neurological conditions in their homes & communities. This is why Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinson’s Canterbury & Dementia Canterbury have joined forces to create the BrainTree Wellness Centre.

The centre is located on Langdons Road in Papanui, Christchurch. The building works officially began in February 2021 & the centre opened its doors to the public in May 2022.

Christchurch Electrical along with its collection of specialist divisions is proud to have worked on this unique project with head building contractor, Armitage Williams providing electrical, plumbing, communications & HVAC to the wellness centre.

Our electrical team have been busy delivering a comprehensive electrical & data design build package. The electrical design includes the Orion application & upgrade of the existing Orion boundary box, main switchboard & distribution, lighting & emergency light fittings, exterior carpark lighting & light fittings as well as general power outlets. Christchurch Communications has implemented a Cat6A structured cabling system including for Dynamix wall mounted cabinets, Ubiquiti data Wi-Fi network, TV & audio visual cabling & also the installation of all security & CCTV required cabling as directed by the client's appointed security contractor.

South Island Plumbing has installed base build plumbing throughout the centre, as well as some tenancy plumbing fit outs. They have worked in conjunction with our specialist air conditioning team, The Heat Pump People to install a suspended drainage system for the heat pump units located in the ceiling.

Ventilation for fresh air has been installed by the Heat Pump People along with Daikin's VRV system for the tenancies (a multi-split climate management solution that optimises comfort & control whilst delivering significant energy efficiencies).

The team is hoping for a harvest of 63 to 64 thousand tonnes of carrots this year which will translate to around nine thousand tonnes of finished product.

Michael says they started carrot production earlier this year than they have ever done.

“We started in mid-February and are looking to run until late September or early October.”

JP-NZ uses a variety of carrots grown in South Canterbury. It’s not just orange carrots that make the cut - purple carrots and yellow carrots are also made into concentrates.

Michael says they also have a clarified product where they remove the pigment.

JP-NZ is looking at a couple of new ways to utilize the waste left behind from concentrating the carrots.

“Basically, the carrots get macerated and then spun out. This leaves behind a lot of pomace which we’re currently selling as stock feed,” Michael says.

“We feel there are a lot of other applications we can use and that will add a lot more value.”

He says this is more of a long-term goal the company is working towards.

Consumer NZ KiwiSaver satisfaction survey – the verdict

Consumer NZ’s annual KiwiSaver satisfaction survey has found three funds stood out from the crowd, with Simplicity, Milford Funds and Generate taking out the top spots.

Simplicity won for the third year in a row with 77 percent satisfaction, scoring well for fees and charges (61 percent), return on investments (58 percent) and ethical investments (66 percent).

Milford Funds took second place this year – 67 percent of its customers were very satisfied with the service they were getting. Milford scored particularly well for access to account information (82 percent) and keeping you updated about your investment (80 percent).

Generate came second equal for overall satisfaction (67 percent). It also scored above average for investment returns and keeping you updated about your investment.

BNZ was the only major bank to rate above average for overall satisfaction, scoring 64 percent. It rated below average for return on investment but scored above average for dealing fairly with problems and complaints (49 percent).

Westpac rated 54 percent while ANZ and ASB came in last, at 47 percent. Both banks scored below average on keeping their customers updated about how their investment was doing.

“It been a tough year for KiwiSavers as they’ve watched their balance go down due to market volatility, and satisfaction ratings have taken a hit this year,” Consumer chief executive Jon Duffy says.

“Industry wide, KiwiSavers are reporting a lacking transparency about fund performance and fees they’re paying.

“Non-bank funds are standing out when it comes to performance, so the major banks do have some work to do to lift their standards and come up to speed.”

Although New Zealanders had invested 81.6 billion dollars in KiwiSaver by March 2021, just 19 percent felt very confident they would have enough money in their account when hey retired.

Three out of four KiwiSavers didn’t know what they paid in fees while 60 percent didn’t know how well their fund was doing compared with others on the market. Those with ANZ (71 percent), BNZ (72 percent) and Westpac (70 percent) were significantly less likely to know how their fund performed.

Only one in four felt it was very easy to compare KiwiSaver providers.

Consumer research found 45 percent said they would like a fund that delivers a decent return and invests responsibly – both were equally important.

A further 13 percent want a fund that invests responsibly, even if it provides a slightly lower return. Most people were undecided whether their provider invested in ‘sin stocks’, such as gambling, tobacco and weapons. CT

Selwyn businesses increasingly confident about the future The recent Selwyn Business Survey, a quarterly survey organised by the Council, shows local businesses are more positive about the outlook over the next six months.

The February survey of 120 businesses from over 17 different industries shows confidence growing after being affected by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The results showed 28 percent of businesses were expecting their profits to increase over the next six months and nine percent are expecting to hire new staff. This is compared to 10 percent of businesses which reported reduced profits over the previous six months, while six percent of businesses reduced staff in that time.

Council Group manager of Community Services and Facilities, Denise Kidd, says it was good to see the positive outlook despite the challenges of the pandemic.

“It’s particularly pleasing to see businesses reporting that they’re planning to hire over the

next six months. Especially as autumn and winter are typically quieter periods for hiring.”

However, there were also positives for business, with 35 percent reporting a closer relationship with customers, while businesses also reported an increase in use of online services, more flexible work arrangements, increased use of local suppliers and more efficient use of staff and resources.

“We know there are still challenges to come, but it’s good to see businesses and our community working together and adapting well and that we’re well placed for the long-term,” Denise says. CT

Focus On | Selwyn District The new village in Rolleston’s Faringdon development would be home to more than 280 residents. Ryman plans to build townhouses and serviced apartments along with a care centre offering rest home, hospital, and dementia care.

Timaru’s City Hub project takes its first steps The multi-million plan to guide growth and investment in Timaru City Centre over the next decade and beyond is taking shape.

Innovative urban design studio, Isthmus Group, has been appointed as urban design consultants to work with council and community stakeholders to deliver the master plan for the Timaru District Council’s City Hub project.

The designers, which have been involved in projects such as the upgrade of streetscapes in Auckland’s Newmarket and the Invercargill City Centre, were among six companies from across New Zealand and Australia tendering for the work.

They will be working in collaboration with award-winning Christchurch placemaking social enterprise Gap Filler, which was behind a huge number of innovative projects in the wake of the Canterbury earthquakes and has since undertaken projects across New Zealand.

The company was selected based on its proven track record on relevant projects around New Zealand, good depth of experienced staff and having the project team leaders based in Christchurch enabling easily access to Timaru.

A new website which will feature project updates, background documents and enable people to sign up for updates and provide feedback has now been launched at Timaru. govt.nz/cityhub Timaru District Mayor, Nigel Bowen, welcomed the project reaching its next stage, saying a key aspect of the Isthmus proposal was their demonstrated ability to bring the community on the journey to get behind redevelopment projects.

Pareora water project approaches finish line with completion of section three Two of the three sectopms of the Pareora pipeline project have now been commissioned bringing the $15 million project a major step closer to completion.

The existing Pareora pipeline, installed in the 1930s, is a critical pipeline that carries water 37km from the upper Pareora River intake to the Claremont water treatment plant and reservoir on the outskirts of Timaru.

It provides approximately 60 percent of water consumed annually from the Timaru Water Supply.

The third section of the pipeline, laying 13.5km of new pipeline between Pareora Gorge Road to Claremont was accelerated to offer better security of supply following the Timaru water discolouration incident.

Drainage and water manager Grant Hall said that the completion of this section offers better supply capacity and resilience for the network.

“Recent events have underlined the importance of this project, so it’s great for the Timaru residents and the business community that we’ve managed to complete this critical piece of water infrastructure ahead of time,” he says.

“With the majority of the pipeline now complete, we can go back to using our full allocation from the Pareora source and reduce our reliance on the Opihi supply, while we work on long term options for the secondary intake.

“Completing this job three months ahead of schedule wouldn’t have been possible without a significant and dedicated effort from our contractors and subcontractors, so I’d like to take the opportunity to thank them on behalf of the whole community.”

The Pareora Pipeline has been designed as three overlapping projects, which has enabled the job to be locally delivered using a majority of local contractors.

Ara expands on local delivery for South Canterbury trades apprentices South Canterbury trades employers are buzzing with the news that their year three electrical apprentices can now undertake part-time study at Ara Institute of Canterbury in Timaru, while continuing to work locally in the region.

The final section of the project is the technically complex section through the Pareora Gorge, where an innovative pipe lining technology will be used rather than a replacement of the pipe.

An agreement between Ara Institute of Canterbury and The Skills Organisation Incorporated (Skills), sees Ara deliver the Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory & Practice (Trade) Level 4, to Skills Electrical apprentices (Year 3), at Ara’s Timaru campus.

“The city engineers 90 years ago designed a really effective path through the Gorge, which we really couldn’t improve on, and it’s a site of high natural and cultural value,” Grant says.

There are currently six apprentices enrolled in the programme who are attending Ara for face-to-face training one day per fortnight for the duration of their third apprenticeship year.

Following consultation with local industry, including Skills and Venture Timaru, it was determined this delivery model was the best option for apprentices and employers, since it spaces out time spent away from the workplace.

The SaniTube liner, which we first used in New Zealand as part of the Downlands upgrade, is a special woven textile liner that brings pipelines back to better than their original strength.

“As a region, South Canterbury continues to enjoy high employment rates, meaning the number of people taking part in on-the-job training and apprenticeships is on the rise,” says Dr Glynnis Brook executive director of Academic, Innovation and Research at Ara.

The liner for section two of the project is currently en-route to New Zealand and is planned to be installed from May 2022 onwards. CT

Ara’s provision of this electrical course at the Timaru campus is welcome news for local industry to be able to train and retain skilled electrical workers in the region.

“We have always recommended that those looking for an electrical career complete Level 2 and 3 at Ara to kickstart an apprenticeship.

“The ability to now continue off-job training locally with Ara towards completion of the Level 4 qualification is of real benefit to both apprentices and their employers,” adds Erin McNaught, director of Business Services & People at Industrial Controls.

Another industry collaboration resulting in a new delivery is the Painting and Decorating Block Course which Ara is contracted to

deliver for stage one BCITO apprentices with intakes in July and October.

Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Woolston campus in Christchurch has traditionally been the only provider in the South Island to deliver block courses in painting and decorating.

In 2021, Venture Timaru and Master Painters NZ (the national representative body for the painting industry) jointly approached BCITO about catering to local apprentices in South Canterbury.

“To have apprentices undertake training at Ara in Timaru means that our workers can learn from the comfort of their hometown.

“We’ve also found that it’s been a tremendous help for our apprentices to have local training on a campus that’s purpose built for our trades, with great facilities and amenities,” explains Grant Jenkins, owner of Grant Jenkins Contracting in Timaru.

As well as partnering with Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) in South Canterbury, Ara has also been assisting Otago Polytechnic in the set-up of a BCITO Painting and Decorating Block Course in the Otago region.

Nigel Davenport, chief executive at Venture Timaru says the Timaru District’s economic and tourism agency is thrilled to see both the electrical and painting and decorating courses being provided locally to meet the needs of industry.

“We are entering a period of unparalleled development and construction in the district across key projects such as the Scott Base Redevelopment build, the Theatre/Heritage project and the extension to Aorangi Stadium.

“There are so many opportunities for our rangatahi to be part of it all.

As you wind your way through this ancient forest be sure to keep an eye and an ear out for the numerous native birds that call this place home, such as: Kereru/Wood Pigeon, Korimako/Bellbird, Piwakawaka/Fantail, and Riroriro/Grey Warbler. These birds, as well as native insects and geckos are here largely because Riccarton Bush is surrounded by a predator-proof fence.

Pūtaringamotu is hugely significant, ecologically and culturally. It is the largest remnant of alluvial podocarp forest on the lower Canterbury Plains and Banks Peninsula, a forest type

that today only covers a tiny fraction of its former extent. It is a key mahinga kai site for Ngai Tūāhuriri, and the place of first permanent European settlement in Otautahi.

The Bush was gifted to the people of Christchurch by the Deans family, with the official hand-over date being 2 November 1914 (when the Riccarton Bush Act was gazetted). The Act seeks to preserve the bush for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of Christchurch. This is achieved through vigilant stewardship by the Riccarton Bush Trust and the operational staff.

The Riccarton Bush Trust is charged with protecting and enhancing Pūtaringamotu/Riccarton Bush as well as promoting its natural and cultural heritage. Putaringamotu/ Riccarton Bush is a very special place and gets over 75,000 visitors each year. Areas of the boardwalk are starting to fail, and the concrete paths have become displaced and uneven and are creating a tripping hazard. Our interpretation and signage are dated and there is very little to inform and educate our visitors on the cultural significance of this very special place.

The Trust has partnered with the Christchurch Foundation to raise funds for one of the biggest projects since the predator-proof fence was installed.

The scope of the project is to: • Integrate Ngāi Tūāhuriri narratives, values and associations with Pūtaringamotu/Riccarton Bush through design, art, entrance experience and interpretation • Upgrade of the track system and infrastructure • Develop areas such as the Grove to support larger groups visiting Pūtaringamotu/Riccarton Bush • Provide interpretation to educate, engage and encourage participation

This special place, this link to our past, with its unique sights, sounds, smells, culture and history must be protected and conserved for the people, not only of Waitaha Canterbury but all of Aotearoa. Pūtaringamotu/Riccarton Bush is a place of living history a gift to future generations and it must be protected.

Building sustainable homes for healthier New Zealanders

The New Zealand Green Building Council are on a mission to make New Zealand homes healthier and happier.

After launching a Net zero carbon road map last year which called for a building code that aligns with the zero-carbon-act, the NZGBC is prompting a change.

Climate change is the most serious and pressing issue of our time, and the science is clear. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that we need to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and to reduce emissions by 50 percent by 2030, if we are to avoid a range of climate change impacts.

The NZGBC are helping to make this happen by introducing robust authentication schemes, such as Green Star and Homestar, which measure the health, warmth and efficiency of New Zealand homes and buildings.

New Zealand buildings are responsible for significant climate-changing pollution.

Emissions from the construction sector have leaped 66 percent in a decade and the built environment is responsible for approximately 20 percent of New Zealand’s carbon footprint.

NZGBC’s rating tool Green Star is an internationally recognized sustainability rating system. It is used as a tool to support stakeholders in the property and construction sectors to design, construct and operate projects in a more sustainable, efficient, and productive way.

The Green Star tool measures energy, water, materials, indoor environment quality (IEQ), transport, land use and ecology, management, emissions, and innovation of homes and buildings.

NZGBC chief executive Andrew Eagles says the benefits of choosing a Green Star home or building are lower running costs, productive occupants, lower carbon emissions, lower water usage and less waste to landfill.

Homestar rates a home’s performance and environmental impact across several categories including density and resource efficiency; energy, health and comfort; water; waste; materials; site; home management; and an optional innovation category.

Since certification started, the demand for Green Star buildings has already doubled in the last two years and there are now 10,000 homes registered with Homestar, compared with the few hundred there used to be, Andrew says.

This increase is due to more volume home builders wanting to know about Homestar, as well as ANZ offering a lower mortgage interest rate.

Through the authentication schemes, Andrew says he hopes to normalise having energy labels on all New Zealand homes in the future.

Kainga Ora, a New Zealand housing government agency have also jumped on board and are now working alongside NZGBC. This has resulted in all their buildings being built to Six Homestar0 or above.

While this means thousands of New Zealand homes built by the government agency have to now be up to this standard, there have been a few challenges to get there, Andrew says.

“We had to look at the way Kainga Ora works, which meant looking at their quality assurance process and working with their construction team.

The NZGBC represents more than 520 companies and organisations, including government departments, banks, energy companies, insurers, property and construction companies, architects, developers, designers, and tertiary education institutions.

Resilient buildings What could make a building more resilient to climate change and environmental challenges during its lifetime? There is more to this than making a structure earthquake-strong and weather-tight.

Decentralised power production increases resilience by reducing reliance on large and distant generators, linked by the national grid.

A warming climate brings greater water-carrying capacity in the atmosphere: we can expect heavier winter snow on higher ground and more frequent rain or hail than experienced last century. Drains could be overloaded as ‘fifty year flood frequency’ becomes perhaps ‘ten year frequency’ and detaining flood water will be needed to help roadside swales cope.

In the east of NZ, climate change may mean the year’s rain falling in uneven bursts between periods of drought: rain water storage may become a part of resilience for buildings as well as farmers. Garden watering and toilet flushing are good uses for stored rainwater, reserving piped supplies fore essential uses. Water storage is also really useful in civil emergency, such as after quakes.

What’s the buzz?

Warmer temperatures and dwindling frost nights may allow mosquitoes to spread their habitat southwards, boosting demand for insect screens on windows. Longer growing seasons may favour home food production, coupled with fashionable edible decorative gardens. The resilient home needs space for raised garden beds and healthy soil left on site after construction: free from lead paint scrapings or construction debris.

Warming to the idea Sunshine is the free heat that a resilient design incorporates by increasing north-facing glazing and reducing on the south, provided the structure has internal thermal mass to absorb heat by day and release it overnight, achieving temperature stability. Dimension Construction is a fairly new player in Canterbury’s architecture and construction scene but is making a splash with their quality and individuality.

Our passion is high end architectural homes however, we have been involved in a lot of housing developments around the city center.

Back in 2018, director Nikhil Dayaram created Dimension Construction. “I got invited to take on a carpentry contract for a big development in Wigram, so we jumped in the deep end, started dimension construction and haven’t looked back,” Nikhil says.

Dimension Construction have worked on several Christchurch-based subdivisions and developments like some apartments in Wigram, tiny homes in Halswell and portable units.

Nikhil has a background in architecture and building and worked as a foreman in several architecture films after completing his apprenticeship.

Nikhil says Dimension Construction is very flexible when working with clients.

Now, Dimension Construction does a wide range of constructions and renovations.

“We start with a meeting,” he explains. “We see what the client wants and needs and we go from there.

“Our passion is high end architectural homes however, we have been involved in a lot of housing developments around the city center,” Nikhil says.

“We have a bunch of stock standard designs we can tweak to suit the individual needs. Or, we can do a whole new design.”

“We have also had a hand in some light commercial works over the last few years and are starting to branch out into commercial fitouts and construction.”

Dimension Construction has several architects they work with as well so clients can be sure of the quality of their designs. Nikhil says clients often have their own architects they bring in.

Recently, Dimension Construction was a subcontractor to Hoogervorst Architectural Builders for the luxury homestead at Flock Hill Station.

“We had the contract to complete the complex foundation structure and all the insitu stratified concrete walls,” says Nikhil. “It was a really cool project to be involved in although the winter weather and road conditions made it very challenging.”

Flock Hill is getting ready for its next stage of development and Nikhil is hoping to get a hand in there as well.

“They’re going to be building a restaurant and more luxury villas,” he says. “Though I think we’ll try and avoid the winter.”

“We like to have a variety of different projects on the go and keep the builds interesting so the boys are always on their toes,” Nikhil says.

Dimension Construction has been kept pretty busy since they started and Nikhil says they’re set for a good long while.

“There’s lots of development around the city so we’ve got a block of five units starting soon and a block of ten starting early next year.”

He says they’ve got a house in Kennedy’s Bush going through consent and they’re hoping to finish a project out in Diamond Harbor by late August or early September.

The Original RSA The Original RSA is the brand now associated with the Christchurch Memorial RSA Association.

After the recent turmoil associated with the necessity to sell the building at 74 Armagh St to service debt, the executive committee conducted some strategic planning.

Part of the planning was looking back to see how the RSA had managed to arrive at the

point that it was necessary to sell, as well as looking forward to the future, to imagine what the needs of currently serving and future serving NZDF personnel would need from the RSA when they left the services.

It was clear that in the current climate the CMRSA was not the most professional of organisations in the hospitality field. Many hospitality organisations were suffering post-earthquake as well as during and post the lockdowns associated with the Covid pandemic.

MEET PEOPLE, SHARE STORIES, HAVE A LAUGH AND HELP OUT IN YOUR COMMUNITY.

If the professionals were suffering, then an organisation like the RSA had no reason to be in that field.

This asked the question as to what is the purpose then of an RSA? This question took the association back to its roots and the reasons behind why the RSA, or its predecessors, were formed 106 years prior.

The book, After the War, (The RSA in New Zealand), by Dr Stephen Clarke provides great insight into the founding of the RSA.

It is and has always been associated with the support for former service personnel who

have served their country. It is about people helping people.

It was focussed more on former service personnel during WWI as the social support systems that exist today did not exist immediately post-Gallipoli and WWI. This provided the template for the future of the CMRSA, which as the rebranding indicates, is The Original RSA dating back to December 1915.

That original purpose still exists today. What has changed is driven by the question: How does an RSA deliver its core functions today and what is necessary to achieve that?

It is acknowledged that comradeship forms a part of that support, as does access to the Veterans Affairs entitlements due through service, along with advocacy for former service personnel to other government and NGO organisations that provide services that may be of benefit to former service personnel.

Wise use of existing hospitality venues does away with the need for the RSA to own their own building, as has been the case in the past, so the footprint of the RSA is by necessity reduced.

What is needed is a centralised hub where former service personnel from across Christchurch can meet with support service providers to assist them in plotting a path to full reintegration back into society, as well as ensuring that their health and wellbeing are restored to the best possible level.

This is not to say that remembrance is forgotten.

Former service personnel need to gather, to be still and to remember those who have passed.

In its early form Anzac Day was about the former service people being with and

supporting each other in that process, in a place that they could claim as theirs - not necessarily a building, but a place.

Traditionally it was the Dawn Service, with the civic service being the place of remembrance for the remainder of society, and still today it is that coming together with comrades across the years to remember those who have passed.

The process of how this all works out is still under discussion, and will need wider discussion with other partners who have supported the RSA over the years, as we try to find the blend that meets the needs of the older service personnel and the younger generations who meet and socialise differently.

A challenge well worth addressing.
