Today the homestead has a total floor area of 816 square metres, including an 86 square metre new garage. The two storey home has four living areas, nine bedrooms, a billiard room, servant quarters and six bathrooms.

No house or budget is too big or too small for Craig Brown Construction. Lia says while they build large high-spec homes, the company has also completed many mid-budget family homes as well.

The only alteration to the original layout is part of the current kitchen and pantry, which have been completely refurbished, enlarged and bought up to present commercial kitchen standards.

Focus on relationships and workmanship

Craig Brown Construction owners Craig and Lia Brown are incredibly proud of the project, which is the company’s largest renovation to date. “Most of our work is new homes, but we’ve now got a lot of people coming to us wanting renovations,” Lia says.

Historic church renovation Craig Brown Construction has also restored a historic church, which was relocated to the Racecourse Hill Homestead property in 2013 from Coalgate. The church is another piece of history Brian and Bernice Cribb have salvaged and has been restored to a high standard for use in the future as a venue for weddings.

The Canterbury building firm is run by brothers Tony and Nick Griffiths who say they enjoy nothing more than putting in a hard days work in the outdoors, keeping their clients happy and enjoying a cold beer at the end of the day. Some might call their style old fashion, but the brothers hit the nail on the head with every job they complete. The proof is the work that keeps coming in, not through advertising, but by word of mouth referrals from its satisfied customers. “We are pretty straight-up and honest guys who like to keep our clients involved all the way along. We work hard to get the best result possible on every job – that’s our bottom line,” Tony says. The duo completed their building apprenticeships in New Zealand before heading off overseas individually, where they continued building. In 2007, a few years after they both returned, the brothers came together to start Griffbuild. Now, having been in business for almost a decade, Griffbuild is a part of the Canterbury landscape. The brothers have 35 years’ combined experience in the industry, so clients can be confident they are in competent hands. Tony says the businesses work initially started in extensions, renovations and new home builds. However, the massive residential rebuild caused by the earthquake kicked its workload into gear.

“After the earthquake we were heavily involved in the Fletcher Residential Home Repair Programme, subcontracting to them. We are still doing the odd bit of the Fletcher remedial work now.” Whilst the residential rebuild is coming to an end, the effect it’s had on the building industry is still having an impact. “Competition has increased and subcontractors’ rates have gone through the roof. “The good guys who do a good job and are well established have been shafted by cowboys who have walked into town and picked up inexperienced subbies who are cheaper and are undercutting the established companies. They are getting the work despite the fact they aren’t skilled.” In the midst of the competitive industry Griffbuild has maintained its trusted and longestablished team of “excellent subbies who doa damn good job”. Tony says it’s now re-focusing the businesses direction and it is moving back into the residential new build market. Leading the re-focus is a new build it has just completed in Lincoln. “The house is high-spec and architecturally designed, the exterior is clad with cedar weatherboards and Rockcote to create a high-end look.” Griffbuild has also completed several restaurant and bar fit-outs and a home extension in Islington.
