The four keys to selling value

Capacity modelling

Imagine driving from Christchurch to Invercargill, six times in a row. That’s about the same distance as the 3,300 kilometres of fibre cables that will be laid in Christchurch when the ultrafast broadband rollout is complete.

Top salespeople use four unique steps to create value-selling opportunities and quantify benefits and solutions.

When pondering what to offer a viewpoint on, I was drawn (back) to capacity modelling.

As part of our work to build a more productive and competitive economy, and to provide better public services, National is delivering improved Internet connectivity to 97.8 percent of New Zealanders by 2019.

More than 127,000 people in Christchurch are now able to connect to ultra-fast broadband and throughout New Zealand, 2.4 million people can. This is part of our $2 billion investment into the ultra-fast broadband and rural broadband initiatives.

While customers love quality, benefits and service, they need bottom-line dollars to justify recommendations, compare offerings, benefits, and to find reduced costs or increased productivity.

Salespeople who refer to “quantified value” use the same language that customers understand and therefore succeed more often. Quantified benefits enhance selling, handling objections, negotiating, and enable differentiation.

Here are the four steps that consultative salespeople use to effectively sell value.

Christchurch has an advantage over other cities because it’s the only city to deploy fibre into almost every building as it gets built.

Across Canterbury, 17 new cell towers are live, and 47 will be upgraded by the middle of next year. Canterbury schools are all able to connect and six Canterbury hospitals have access to fast broadband capable of 100 Mbps.

1. Search and discover the value opportunity Finding the customer value may be the biggest challenge. Few salespeople do it automatically and must be trained to search, find and assess the value. In short, they must determine what the specific customer benefits/applications are and how their benefits can generate value.

Many New Zealanders already know how useful broadband is.

More than 830 new households and businesses connect to ultra-fast broadband fibre every working day.

IMPACT indicators help identify generic, broad areas where savings and efficiency can be generated. In simple terms, IMPACT indicators tell the salesperson where to look for concrete data that will improve the customer’s operation. They are: Inventory, Money, People, Assets, Capability and Time.

Every school, integrated family health centre and 90 percent of businesses are now able to connect. There are now 19 towns and cities across regional New Zealand where the ultra-fast broadband build is complete, including Ashburton and Timaru.

Ahead of schedule, this is one of New Zealand’s biggest and most successful infrastructure projects.

In remote and rural communities, this first phase of our rural broadband initiative is reaching around 300,000 New Zealanders – and for some their Internet speeds are around 100 times faster than they were before.

Five years ago when this project began, only one in five rural homes and businesses had access to peak broadband speeds of at least 5Mbps. Now nine out of 10 rural homes outside ultra-fast broadband areas have access to at least those speeds.

Other infrastructure projects are seeing progress too.

Construction contracts have been let for the new Christchurch Northern Corridor and stage two of the Christchurch Southern Motorway. These two motorway projects represent a combined $435 million investment and are critical for improving travel times and supporting growth and development. Construction for both is set to get underway in October.

This significant spend on infrastructure by the Government provides the incentives to attract business and other investment, and will help to ensure that Christchurch not only rebuilds but thrives.

With Christchurch developing into a dynamic, forward-thinking city, modern infrastructure will be a necessary ingredient for a prosperous future.

2. Use IMPACT indicators to analyse the value It is essential to find a value on indicators to make the benefits specific, measurable, and memorable for the customer, and to aid in quantifying the indicators. A simple example: If your product or process can save 10 minutes per day per worker, this needs to be extrapolated over the number of workers, and converted to dollars for full impact.

The six IMPACT indicators are values that work together to help measure/predict the impact or results of the benefits your company can provide. This is a creative process and requires thought, time, and logic.

3. Optimise the value It is important to project the values over a longer period of time. Obviously, if a benefit has a life cycle of six months, or is a one-time enhancement, you are limited. However, if you provide an ongoing benefit to the customer, you have earned the right to value it over a longer period of time.

4. Present the value solution The salesperson has to support his or her presentation with collected customer data and a worksheet showing how the conclusion has been reached. This adds credibility to the forecast or prediction of performance improvements.

While it is not a guarantee of results, it enables the customer to understand your rationale, explore the possibilities and even add or negotiate the process.

Yes I have written on this before, but this is a constant nagging issue we are striking with clients day in and day out currently… hence I felt I had to offer a further deliberation on it.

So the age old question is: do you get the work and then acquire the staff… or get the staff and then chase the work?

It’s not a 'one-size fits all' unfortunately and will depend on the product or service you sell, the style of delivery and your levels of service. Nonetheless, the fundamental rule of thumb is that nothing sucks cash from a business like unprecedented growth. Also, heavy growth can distort and clutter quality of service delivery.

If your business claims service delivery is paramount and a point of difference, then clearly you need to get the staff before the work (or figure out a method to get the work done on contract or sub-contract), so that your service levels, and therefore brand, are not diminished.

A big challenge around capacity modelling is knowing what you are going to produce, going to sell, when and how and why. Yes, many more questions than answers and very often you simply don’t know the answers - but educated guesses have to be made.

Educated ‘what if’ analysis and educated stabs in the dark even.

Remarkably, more often than not with the right guidance and questions, you get it more right than wrong.

It all starts with big picture planning. How big do you want to be? How busy do you want to be?

Some early yardage numbers need sorting. Average transaction value, average transaction frequency, margin analysis (how much do you make on each transaction) – then it becomes a game of just pure mathematics. The wonderful thing about this is you are in control of the mathematics; you can be as big or small, as busy, as profitable as you want to be.

It sounds so very easy and it can be, but if you need a hand then get hold of a cost and management accountant and thrash out the ‘ifs, buts and maybes’.

There are loads of templates in Excel online, or there are fantastic bits of forecasting software so you can start working your numbers if you want to do most of the work yourself.

There is a growing pressure on lawyers worldwide to ditch the archaic practice of charging clients by six minute units and convert to upfront fixed pricing.

Print media is dead. Yet, despite several bouts of popularity, this still isn’t true.

The power of flight is still something that I am in awe of; even after hundreds of flights around the globe I still see aviation as one of the greatest achievements of our lifetime. An interesting question I was recently asked was “do I see flight as creativity or innovation?”

British legal costs expert, Jim Diamond said in a recent post in the Centre for Policy Studies that “Steps should be taken to ensure fair practice in legal procedure. The ‘billable hour’ is an outdated and unsustainable billing method for legal services to continue. Alternative billing methods must be considered and legal procedure must be simplified to ensure that the legal market place thrives in the long term, and the price of law is not punitive.”

Lord Justice Jackson, a senior British judge, has proposed a move to fixed fee basis for all litigation work, suggesting that fees are capped. He is reported as saying “Remuneration on a time basis rewards inefficiency. Unrestrained costs drive parties to leave no stone unturned: the more costs mount up, the more determined each party becomes to ensure that the other party pays them. The result is inevitable – a civil justice system which is exorbitantly expensive.”

If you think about it, charging six minutes for having sent a short email or leaving a 30 second message does not sound right.

Time based billing places most of the commercial risk on the client’s shoulders.

There is regular commentary in the UK, United States and Canada that the market now expects greater transparency on fees and that fixed price billing is the economic tool that will allow consumers of legal services to compare and benchmark the cost of legal services.

So what of the New Zealand market? It is fair to say that the traditionalist lawyers are resistant to upfront fixed pricing.

They will tell you that it is sometimes impossible to predict how long a task may take. Incidentally, this view would clearly not wash with Lord Justice Jackson.

However, there are other lawyers in New Zealand who take the view that if you promote yourself as having the necessary legal expertise and experience, then providing an upfront fixed price, with the ability to review for contingencies, should go without saying.

There is also an issue of affordable access to justice. A number of lawyers are also concerned that more and more SMEs are muddling through legal issues themselves, because accessing quality legal services has become too expensive.

But, like a lot of things, market change will only occur with pressure from consumers and the increasing presence of more transparent, streamlined and cost effective alternatives.

A number of these alternatives are operating from a cloud basis.

Print media readership numbers may appear to decline every time a new media arrives as competition, but it certainly doesn’t mean its audience is not engaged.

When choosing traditional media for brand exposure, it all depends on who, not necessarily how many, are reading, listening or watching.

Newspapers, magazines, radio and television, with their long history are rated by many as more credible and trusted sources of information. And for some, relaxing with a magazine or whatever is on TV sure beats endless clicking and scrolling through countless choices.

Brand exposure via traditional media is considered to be single exposure. This means brand information is often forced to be efficient and high impact. With consumers more time-pressed than ever before, this can’t be a bad thing.

Digital media on the other hand, because it is so easily shareable and accessible, offers unlimited exposure. There’s always the exciting prospect of a brand message ‘going viral’. That is unless there’s been a viral mistake.

Some argue that digital media is too cluttered. But thousands of experts have voiced their adoration of digital media.

The rise of the Internet has allowed brands to interact more easily and more intimately with consumers.

If creativity is doing the same thing you’ve always done in a slightly new way, and innovation is doing something you didn’t know existed yesterday, then I would have to say creativity led Orville and Wilbur Wright to inventing, building and flying the world’s first successful aeroplane.

The innovation of flight came well before 1903: people jumping off towers with bird-like wings strapped to their backs in the hope of staying off the ground, kites and hot air balloons.

All this demonstrated to the Wright brothers that something could defy gravity and fly. So, is innovation a word of our generation and as business leaders should we be challenging ourselves and our staff to be more creative?

Every organisation could gain immediate traction by making small improvements to the things they already do well. Just take a look at our Olympic athletes; they strive to gain a one percent increase which can be the difference between winning and not placing at all.

This social aspect creates arguably a stronger connection and more power to influence. With Internet access becoming increasingly mobile, brand messages are also more accessible.

Most people are more creative than they give themselves credit for and given the time and opportunity to share ideas and insights, they often flourish. When someone is passionate and knowledgeable about a task or topic, they see new opportunities or a fresh way of doing something.

The freedom of digital media has also allowed businesses to create their own content and distribute it themselves. But it takes thoughtful planning and consideration to create a constant flow of engaging digital content.

There is huge potential for us all to explore the “why didn’t we think of that before” moment in our working day. Many of us will underestimate an idea, believing that it’s too simple to be important.

Not only does it need to read well, it has to look good too. A Facebook page or blog that hasn’t been updated in several weeks might signal that a business is too busy to care, or has in fact, closed.

In my view creativity in our organisations will be the difference between jumping off a building with wings strapped to our back and travelling from London to New York on an Airbus A380.

Encouraging your team to think differently and building creativity in the workplace is easier than you think and can be achieved in a number of ways:

The myriad of choices can seem like a minefield for businesses to navigate.

Media planning for brand messages are best considered as an eco-system. Campaigns are most effective when tailored to the target audience. Yet most brands have more than one.

• Giving people time to explore their simple daily tasks • Constantly questioning yourself and your work practices • Encouraging group thinking

Start with high impact content that provokes thinking and captures hearts. A successful marketing message is a mix that translates well across multiple channels.

• Acknowledging that not every idea will work

Digital media is here, now and for the future. But the history and richness of traditional media can’t be ignored.

Creativity costs far less than innovation, it doesn’t always demand an increase in capability or resources and it builds great culture. You don’t need to be the next Wright brothers to turn something simple into something amazing.

Dealing with workplace manipulation

Conflict at work will occur from time to time. But if there is an ongoing conflict with one person, and when you walk away from every interaction feeling like you have been manipulated, it is highly likely you are being manipulated.

Having enough light to be able to do day to activities is something we take for granted.

Many years ago, I became a target for a manipulator who worked for me. Over a long period of time I often felt sick, angry and constantly frustrated, simply because I was not aware that I was being manipulated.

Although I am an independent, strong and intelligent person, I lacked personal boundaries. As a result, I allowed this person to make decisions and make changes - basically doing what she wanted.

I did this because I thought that she was a great worker and motivated to grow the business. The truth was that this person was intimidated by anyone who was smart or assertive.

The goal of a manipulator is to control and influence the behaviours and action of others. Because it’s about control, manipulation is prevalent in the workplace, which usually has a hierarchical structure. To control others, manipulators can abuse their positions, authority, or responsibilities, while not overstepping accepted boundaries in the workplace.

The control gestures manipulators use include emotional blackmail, dishonest yet persuasive language, discrediting others around them, deflecting the issue at hand when confronted, concealed threats, and lies or distortion of the facts. What’s interesting is most manipulators don’t realise they are doing this because their behaviour is fed by their own insecurities, or a view of life as a series of battles So how do you deal with manipulation when it’s your staff or co-worker? People do what they do because they can, so firstly, it’s important to define your limits and set boundaries by being assertive.

As masters of the emotional game, manipulators will use any emotional reaction on your part as evidence that you are the abuser. So it’s very important that you always deal with the behaviour, not the person - this will ensure you disengage emotionally and think rationally – unemotional assertiveness is an attitude a manipulator cannot match.

Dealing effectively with manipulation is, at its core, about thinking differently, which is very easy on a rational level, but daunting on an emotional level.

When you want to avoid hiring a manipulator in the first place, the first difficulty is spotting it when someone is in front of you for half an hour. I would suggest allowing the candidate to start working while monitoring their trial period very closely for negative behaviour. Another idea is to also get feedback from other staff.

It’s remarkable to think that less than 200 years ago, prior to electric lighting, our days were predominantly controlled by the hours of daylight available.

Today, with electric lighting available at our fingertips, you might think we’d be in a better position. However, as we spend more time using computers, our eyes are under huge demands.

Having enough light is vital for maintaining good eye health.

This means having enough light going onto your computer screen and paperwork, but also avoiding glare. If there’s a window behind your screen your desk may appear to be welllit, but without enough light above your screen, your eyes may be automatically adjusting to shut out the excess light behind and on your desk surface.

This means without you being aware of it, you might be struggling to read what’s on the screen in front of you.

Likewise, if there’s a window behind you, there may be too much light hitting your screen.

Incorrect lighting on screens is also shown to have a direct correlation with shoulder/neck muscle tension, as we poke our heads towards the screen, trying to make it easier to read the content.

The ever-increasing amount of time we spend looking at our screens is another challenge. Reading from a printed document gives us a chance to physically move the paperwork around to change focal distance; not so easily done with a screen.

Modern glass office blocks with large windows can also make it challenging to control light effectively. So what to do?

Ideally, have a ceiling light directly above the workstation user, so that there is sufficient light on the screen but no glare. Alternatively, position a desk light over the top of the screen or screens.

Use blinds to control amount of light coming in. Ideally, position screens at 90 degrees to the window to avoid bright sun behind or light coming onto the screen.

Be conscious of the colours you use in a work area. Lots of bright white walls and desk tops will reflect more light and can cause glare and tired eyes. Local lawyer moves online

Digital reluctance inspires new, cloud-based firm New Zealand’s first web-based law firm is challenging the way lawyers have traditionally worked.

After 20 years of commercial law, Christchurch-based lawyer, John Shingleton sensed that the market wanted lawyers to fully embrace digital technology and his solution was to create a cloud-based law firm.

“Having been the managing partner of a mid-sized law firm for several years, I could see that there were ways of offering a high quality, cloud-based service that would provide better value for money for clients,” John says.

“We believe this is the first time an online legal service has been established in New Zealand without the behind-thescenes costs of a traditional law firm.”

Among the features that set Online Lawyers NZ apart from many other law firms are a competitive, fixed price for services, regular online posts about legal issues, and more transparency for clients about the work being done for them.

“At the moment many people have no idea what they will be charged after they have engaged a lawyer. The market has been surprisingly tolerant for a long time but the tide is turning,” John says.

Mouth guard design wins the NZ James Dyson Award A concussion-detecting mouth guard that makes it easier to identify and manage concussions in rugby games has won the New Zealand section of the 16th James Dyson Award.

Massey University industrial design graduate, Spencer Buchanan designed the prototype mouth guard, called Nerve, with motion sensors worn by rugby players to identify concussion risks after the player has taken a rough knock.

The mouth guard design utilises inertial motion sensors that identify forces transmitted to the head, but are missed by the human eye.

If an athlete wearing the mouth guard takes an impact over a certain threshold, the sensors communicate wirelessly to the team doctor’s ipad or tablet, and calculates the risk based on an algorithm that measures the impact and where it was located and the player’s previous concussion history to determine whether the player should return to play.

Head judge Mike Jensen says the design addresses a topical issue for New Zealand sport and culture. “What is exciting about Spencer’s design is that it is not one product; he’s developed an entire system encompassing sensors in a fully sealed, noncorrosive mouth guard, a charger unit and an app.

“These components also reveal his sensitivity to good design, while offering peace of mind to athletes involved in any contact sport, their medical support and their families.”

Five New Zealand entries, including Spencer’s product, and four runner up products, will progress to the international James

Dyson Award competition, where all have a chance to win the grand winner’s prize of $60,000 to put towards commercialising the idea, plus another $10,000 for the designer’s university.

The international winner will be selected by inventor of the bagless vacuum, James Dyson and announced on October 26 this year.

The benefits of hiring staff with disabilities

Workplace diversity is having a higher importance placed on it as awareness about the importance and benefits of it grow. This shift is extremely encouraging, in particular for people in New Zealand who have a disability.

Adults with disabilities have struggled against employment inequality, but it is high time for employers to realise the benefits and embrace these valuable members of our society.

According to Statistics New Zealand, almost two-thirds of disabled adults under 65 are employed, and most of the remainder would like to have a job.

The survey found that 39 percent of disabled people aged 15 to 64 weren’t working in paid jobs in 2013. While 74 percent of those who weren’t employed said they would like to work if a job was available. That is a sizeable pool of potential employees who are capable and eager to work, which is worthwhile considering.

Unfortunately the report shows that many disabled people face difficulties in looking for jobs and tend to fare worse and are less likely to be successful when applying for a job than their nondisabled counterparts. Interestingly, relatively few disabled workers need special modifications or equipment in their workplace.

Those who are employed work in a wide range of occupations and industries throughout the country. More than a third work in either managerial or professional jobs, while many work in physically demanding occupations such as labouring or trade jobs.

Hiring a capable or qualified person with a disability brings greater benefits beyond just filling an open job, there’s a solid business case too. The benefits of hiring people with disabilities are: Long term commitment Those with a disability are less likely to seek new employment as regularly as their job hunting colleagues. In general they are more grateful for their position and are likely to be committed long term to their employer.

Exceptional abilities

Drive to succeed These employees are often dedicated to their work and have a strong desire to improve, exceed the performance of their peers and take on more responsibility. This in turn increases their company’s profitability.

Resourceful People with disabilities can face numerous challenges in daily life. This means they are often great problem solvers and are skilled at thinking creatively.

Greater camaraderie They often inspire their colleagues and have a positive effect on the entire workforce.

Continual improvement

Rather than focusing on the disability, look beyond that and see the ability. This exceptional group of people may be limited in some areas, but they often excel with highly developed skills in others.

Their performance at work steadily improves over time.

Even workers with more profound disabilities can make great improvements.

They’re reliable

Happy to work

In general this group take less sick days than the general population. They are also known to be punctual, arriving for work and returning from breaks on time.

Employees with a disability are found to be extremely satisfied with their jobs. They love their work and will go the extra mile for the company.

Glass ceilings Tackling gender bias at your place

As a nation we proudly boast that we were the first country to give woman the vote in national elections. We are also one of the few countries in the world to have had two female heads of government, and one of only two countries to have had a female head of government directly succeed another, the other country being Sri Lanka.

The government enacted the Equal Pay Act 1972 to address direct and indirect discrimination in wage rates. It required equal pay for women and men in the same job.

On the surface New Zealand does a good job at appearing to have equal opportunities in the business world for women and men. But despite these progressive measures we’ve made towards gender equality, an unconscious gender bias impedes woman at every step of the employment ladder, from job application success to earning the big bucks at the top.

The New Zealand Ministry for Women has recorded the gender pay gap since 1998. The gender pay gap compares the median hourly earnings of women and men in full and part-time work. In 2015 it found that men earned 11.8 percent more than woman in the same role, that’s up from 9.1 percent in 2012.

CHANGE YOUR JOB CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

A Credit Suisse research report on women in senior management, released in 2014, found that women are still poorly represented in New Zealand boardrooms. According to the report, the percentage of women on boards in New Zealand was 19.6 percent in 2011, rising to 21.3 percent in 2012, but this figure had since fallen back to 19.6 percent in 2013.

While a NZX Gender Diversity Statistics report in the same year showed that male directors out numbered females by 88 percent to 12 percent across the 109 participating companies surveyed.

Businesses might like to believe that they make fair evaluations based on employees’ qualifications and quality alone, but the research suggests otherwise. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, gender bias is still alive and well in our country.

So how can you make sure that your unconscious bias is kept at bay? Try implementing some of the following measures: Assign roles based on ability Society holds deeply rooted stereotypes that women are better suited to support, administration and communication based roles, whilst men perform better in leadership positions. It is these stereotypes that form the basis of gender discrimination at work. The allocation of work should be organised purely on the basis of employee’s abilities and not their gender or presumed skills.

Name-blind applications You could try hiring staff without knowing the sex of the applicants you’re evaluating. It’s called name-blind applications, where names are removed from CV’s. If you don’t know whether the applicants are women or men then your bias shouldn’t be triggered.

Equal pay Equal work should receive equal pay, but unfortunately in New Zealand it does not. Be the change and actively establish a policy in your business that guarantees both your male and female staff are paid equally for the same role.

Talk about it Make gender bias a point of discussion amongst senior staff and provide training on how to identify and erase it. Increasing the awareness of unconscious bias can go some way to influencing the outcome of decision around hiring and promotions. Over time it can contribute to a long term perception adjustment and equality in the workplace.

Familiarise yourself with anti-discrimination laws As an employer you should have a thorough understanding of the laws in place to prevent discrimination in the workplace, for example equal pay, harassment, victimisation and direct discrimination based on sex.

Minding your manners How to be a better colleague

Every office has one: the colleague you expediently time your lunch and coffee breaks to avoid.

Yep, who we work with can make all the difference between looking forward to stepping into the office and counting down the minutes until we leave.

But what exactly is it about colleagues that make them more enjoyable, or less tolerable? And how can we make sure we ourselves are being the best colleague we can be?

Aside from the obvious etiquette – be ethical, be polite, be punctual, be honest, be respectful, avoid gossip – there are some behaviours that you can keep in check to ensure you aren’t becoming that colleague.

Be cheery – but not too cheery The axiom “a smile is infectious, you catch it like the flu” is no myth. A passing smile and a cheery salutation is an effortless way to put colleagues into good moods and show them that you: a) recognise their existence and, b) are happy to make time for them.

There is a line though – being too bubbly, especially when it means failing to notice that someone is having a bad day, can be interpreted as annoying and/or ignorant. On the other hand,

not smiling at all deems you somewhat unapproachable and is a guaranteed way to make people avoid (and quite possibly dislike) you.

Master small talk Whether at the water cooler, in the break room or at your desk, intervals of small talk break up the day and make colleagues feel more comfortable around one other.

Small talk is not the time to dribble on about your personal problems outside the office, however. Keep topics light and non-invasive – think music, movies, travel, exercise, pets, hobbies, cuisine, weekend plans etc.

Listen and learn Small gestures can have big impact. Simply listening is validation that you respect your colleagues’ opinions. Listening also indicates that you have an empathetic ear that can be of great support should anyone need it.

Try to keep the ‘hear and be heard’ balance even (that is doing as much listening as you do speaking).

Compliment others – and give credit where credit’s due Whether it’s their latest project or something they’re wearing, there are many ways to compliment a colleague – and as long as it’s sincere it will be appreciated. Be sure to not overdo it or

you’ll risk being seen as a greaser whose compliments aren’t genuine, rather agenda setting.

Be ethical and diplomatic You can’t be completely sure of what your colleagues’ opinions are on every single matter, so be tactful when voicing yours. For all you know they might have a relative, friend or partner that is subject to whatever you’re discussing and your opinion on the matter could be causing offence or stress, not to mention creating an air of awkwardness. An easy way to check yourself before you wreck yourself is to imagine you are talking to your boss or parent in law, or the likes.

Avoid gossip As tempting as it is, and as easy as it can be to fall into, conversations regarding gossip, negative or facetious opinions of others are dangerous territory and should undoubtedly be avoided, or stopped in their tracks when they surface.

Whether you were being serious or not, your conversation is likely to make its way back to the person it concerned.

Show restraint This one’s wide reaching. Whether it’s the amount of cologne you spray each morning or the decision to not divulge every detail about the horrible thing that just happened to you, showing restraint is synonymous with showing respect.

The weakest link How to spot a workplace bully

Bullies aren’t just nasty children in the school playground. The reality is people can be bullied at any age in any environment.

And it’s not as uncommon as you’d think.

It has been reported that a 1,700-person academic survey revealed New Zealand to have the second-worst rate of workplace bullying in the developed world, with one in five workers afflicted.

Indentifying workplace bullies isn’t always easy as it can often be subtle and devious, such as efforts to undermine credibility, performance or confidence. Personal attacks and put downs are also common methods of bullying that are more easily recognised.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment define workplace bullying as “repeated and unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker or a group of workers that creates a risk to health and safety”.

It affects people physically and mentally, resulting in increased stress levels, decreased emotional wellbeing, reduced coping strategies and lower work performance.

Identifying a bully Anyone can be a bully at work whether it’s a boss, a co-worker or a client. If you’re a victim it’s important to recognise your situation and act.

How to respond appropriately Assess the bully’s behaviour; is it a one off incident or repeated attacks over a period of time? If it is an ongoing issue then you need to take action.

If possible, gather evidence of the bullying. This might mean keeping notes of your interactions, saving threatening emails or asking a witness to support your claim.

Know your organisation’s policy on workplace bullying so you have a better understanding of how your employer will handle the situation, then report the bully. It can be difficult, especially if the bully has knocked your confidence. Report the bullying as factually and objectively as possible. Recount your experiences and share your documented proof.

Why being a mentor makes good business sense We know that it’s important in business to give something back. Not only is it good for the business, but it’s also good for your own personal and professional development as a manager and leader.

We talk to Spark Digital’s, Vanessa Sorrenson about how mentoring others can bring about positive change.

These days it’s popular for organisations to give their staff a ‘volunteer day’ where they get paid to help out at a local charity.

But it’s quite another story for individuals to commit their own time over a four year period to meet regularly with a young person from a vastly different background.

Thirteen years ago when she was still scrambling her own way up the corporate ladder, Vanessa Sorrenson decided to commit to being one of a group of foundation mentors in the YWCA Auckland Future Leaders Programme. This life changing developmental programme is where young women (aged 14-18 years), from low decile schools are paired with a female mentor who helps to develop their leadership skills, resilience, and confidence.

Today Vanessa holds an enviable role at Spark Digital as GM, Enterprise Clients. She cites the main reason she originally put her

hand up to be a mentor was as a way to give back to others. She readily admits to being unprepared for the far-reaching benefits it would bring to her own personal and professional development and indirectly, to her employer.

Vanessa believes that her experience as a mentor really helped her reflect on her own leadership strengths and weaknesses and that this learning has helped shape her into the successful leader she is today.

“Being involved as a mentor in this programme was an enriching experience in more ways than I could have imagined. I underestimated how much I would learn about myself as part of the process of being a mentor.

“In order for me to be a successful mentor I needed to look critically at my own leadership style which helped my development, both professionally and personally.

“The young woman whom I mentored was quite different to me in her background and personality, and that made the experience richer for me, because I had to look at things from a different set of eyes.

"I am much more of an A type personality and very driven, whereas my mentoree was more considered and planned. This was an amazing lesson for me to learn because it pointed out how two completely different people are both correct, as long as

you are clear on your plan and what success looks like. My view wasn’t always the right path. It might sound like a cliché but I think I gained as much from her as she did from me.”

900 million people are unfulfilled with their work Here’s what to do if you’re one of them A single entrepreneur, a single artist, a single author, a single startup or a single company cannot change the world - but what about 900 million of us?

There are 900 million people in 142 countries who are unfulfilled with what they do in life [Gallup poll]. In the US alone, 70 percent of people working are unhappy and don’t care for what they do.

Millennials are the most unfulfilled and care least about what they do at work. This is an enormous squandered potential, a lot of misdirected minds and many unhappy people.

Just think about the positive impact these people can make in the world if they started doing something they valued.

The majority of the 79 million US Millennials are either unemployed, underpaid, or weighed down with student loans, and according to Bankrate.com, one in four Millennials has more debt than savings. Some 94 percent of college students currently graduate with debt, so what will they do when they graduate?

According to research at MIT and Oxford University, almost half of the jobs will be automated in the next 20 years. Google’s top rated futurist speaker, Thomas Frey, predicts that two billion jobs will be automated by 2030. What will all these people do when a robot or an app will replace them?

HAYDEN PADDON

Fourteen to 16 hours per day, temperatures of up to 55 to 60 degrees Celsius and speeds of up to 220km/h; that’s a typical day in the life of 29 year old World Rally Championship (WRC) driver Hayden Paddon.

The South Cantabrian just notched a major milestone – not only for himself but for our little nation – when he became the first New Zealander ever to win a leg of the WRC. So how exactly does one get from small-town New Zealand onto the WRC circuit, let alone winning a stage of it? For Hayden, rallying isn’t just a sport, nor is it a hobby or occupation. It’s a vocation, a way of life… and the only way of life he wants to know.

“But this also stretched into practising on the back lawn nearly every weekend, ripping up the grass.”

He started out in go-karts at the age of six and by the age of 12, as soon as he was old enough to obtain his motorsport license, he made the move to cars. From there his hunger for the sport only intensified.

The early years In 2002 at the age of 15, the same week he’d passed his learner’s driver license, Hayden competed in his first rally, Rally Hamner.

He went on to compete in the New Zealand Rally Championship in 2006, winning both the junior and rookie titles, and in 2007 made his WRC debut as a wildcard entry at the Production World Rally Championship event in New Zealand, retaining his junior title and coming within one point of winning the championship outright, a title he would go on to claim the following year.

Racing is Hayden’s blood. His father Chris was a rally driver long before Hayden was born, and while Hayden felt no pressure to follow in his father’s footsteps, he certainly felt a desire to.

But 2009 was a particularly significant year in the amateur’s career. Not only did he retain his New Zealand title, but he also won the Pacific Cup and qualified for the Pirelli Star Driver AsiaPacific final at Rally Australia, with the fastest time of the opening stage. This earned him the Pirelli Star Driver scholarship, a fullyfunded programme for six events of the 2010 WRC season.

His earliest memories of racing evoke an exuberant, youthful side of him. “I remember racing go-karts at the local family kart club when I was nine, getting covered in mud and trying to win as many trophies as I could,” Hayden recalls.

Not surprisingly he was also the worthy recipient of a $50,000 Rising Stars scholarship through Rally New Zealand, which gave him the crucial funding needed to complete his 2010 PWRC campaign.

He solidified his capability at international level by finishing ninth overall and ahead of all the PWRC regulars.

“It was always a dream to be a WRC driver, but it was not until we won the Pirelli scholarship that I believed that it was possible,” he says.

Geraldine’s backcountry had certainly proved the perfect landscape for a young Hayden to hone his talents. Between its gentle rolling hills and its winding shingle roads, it’s little wonder that gravel came to be Hayden’s favourite surface to compete on.

“It certainly helped growing up in the country, racing around on the paddocks in the farm and occasionally taking the long way to school or work via some back roads”.

But more than its unique geography, it was the support of the Geraldine community that helped spawn and shape Hayden’s career. “Coming from a small town helped me, as everyone knew what I was doing; 90 percent of the businesses in the town helped me and everyone was supportive. It was amazing.

“Thanks to a group of dedicated South Canterbury businessmen and shareholders, we were able to get together the funding for the 2011 season, and we repaid the faith and trust people put in us by winning the PWRC that year.

“It was a crucial year for the future.”

Life on the road “Driving a rally car is not like a road car – long three day events (up to 14-16 hours competing per day), high temperatures (up to 55-60 degrees in the car on hot events), high adrenalin and a high pressure environment means the body is under pressure to perform at the highest level,” says Hayden.

Training is therefore focused on a lot of areas – cardio fitness, strength, balance, mental training and psyche. “Each day would be made up of 2-3 hours physical training, up to one hour mental training, along with study work of the next upcoming event.”

“After the scholarship year in 2010 we had to fund our own campaign to stay in the WRC in 2011, and we knew if we disappeared that we would never get back again.”

In 2015 Hayden signed a contract to stay with Hyundai Motorsport until the end of 2018. It’s a valued partnership; one that Hayden believes can win the WRC.

He set about establishing Hayden Paddon Rallysport Global Ltd – a conglomerate of generous locals who recognised Hayden’s talent and dedication, and were all too happy to provide the financial backing that would help see the young man realise his dreams.

While Hyundai Motorsport is made up of roughly 200 people of nationalities from all around the world, Hayden’s direct team is a much smaller affair involving just himself, his co-driver of 11 years, John Kennard and his fiancé and PR guru Katie.

“It’s like a family within the team and our partnership with Hyundai NZ, and I believe we can win the WRC with them.”

But it won’t be without challenge and sacrifice.

“It’s not as glamorous as everyone thinks – we spend very little time in NZ, a lot of time in airports and we are away from family and friends for 11 months of the year. Being part of a professional team is very different compared to when back in New Zealand running the team with family and friends.”

There are still three remaining events of the season: Spain then Great Britten, and the final event, in Australia in November.

The WRC certainly absorbs most of his time but he’s not complaining, rather saying he’s “living the dream and working towards the ultimate goal”.

And that’s not to say there’s no time for personal endeavours.

Hayden is working on some exciting projects for the future, as well as looking forward to tying the knot with fiancée Katie in the next year or two.

Despite having travelled to and experienced many exotic locations, Hayden still believes New Zealand is the best place in the world.

He makes the most of his time spent at home by visiting family and friends and, if there’s time, squeezing in some mountain biking and a few rounds of golf.

Paying it forward Given the amount of success he’s enjoyed you’d be forgiven for thinking Hayden mightn’t be humble, but you’d be wrong. His unassuming persona is unwavering.

He regards both his co-driver and fiancée as integral to his success, and the same goes for those who have joined him and stuck by him on his ambitious journey.

“Rally has given me a lot and I would not be where I am without the help hundreds of people have given me. I want to see the sport grow and to give something back in a small way.”

He’s been hard at work since the beginning of 2016 establishing the Paddon Rally Foundation with the vision of growing rally sport in New Zealand.

Recognising that he wouldn’t be where he is without the immense support and guidance of many, the Paddon Rally Foundation is set up to attract new competitors to the sport and provide a support network that helps develop talent.

“It’s in its early stages but we will be accepting applications at the end of this year and the target is to assist many competitors each year of all levels – to encourage more people into the sport and keep people in the sport.

“We have a New Zealand base,” Doyle says.

“We travel to Christchurch every six weeks rather than six months, so we can sort out issues quickly and efficiently. In many cases we can get a message to our production facility in Auckland, which is open seven days a week, and have the item shipped back down within a few days.

“We’re extremely flexible and efficient, and when it comes to weddings and events, that’s exactly what you need in a tailor.”

With wedding season hitting fever pitch locally from around October to April, it’s also Tailor Made Suits’ busy season.

“By travelling to Wellington and Christchurch every six weeks, we are able to help wedding groups throughout the whole country. We already have Christchurch tour bookings opened up until February next year, so people can jump online and book ahead.”

Canterbury comes out to play Cup and Show Week 2016 - November 5-12 The biggest week in Canterbury’s entertainment calendar is here once again; Cup and Show Week will be in full swing from November 5 – 12.

Farmers from across the region have herded up their finest stock and made the journey into the big smoke for the A&P Show, ladies and gents are donning their Sunday best for a flutter at the races, and the tills of retail and hospitality businesses across the city are ringing with the sound of extra revenue from the annual influx of visitors.

The city is positively humming with a week full of events which draw a swathe of people locally and from out of town, and these people and ready to inject the local economy with cash.

The hospitality sector, including catering, eateries and accommodation, plus the retail and tourism industries, will be on the receiving end of the expenditure. A welcome boost for the many new hotels, bars, restaurants and shops now open in the city, yet to build a regular customer base.

This year’s festival is all about celebrating the thrill of a win, a night out with friends, getting a taste of rural life at the show, a chance to dress to the nines, to experience our region’s excellent food and wine and to come together and have some fun.

Canterbury A&P Show ASB Agricultural Park

Event director, Geoff Bone says that despite recent challenges in the agricultural industry, the cattle section has been going from strength to strength.

Every year around 3,000 animals are entered into 1,700 classes as exhibitors vie for over $100,000 in prizes and prize money.

“Last year we grew our cattle numbers at the Show by 15 percent and we expect that Royal Event status will attract even more exhibitors and hope to see this number rise again.

Royal Events attract competitors from all over the country and it’s a rare opportunity for South Island and Canterbury competitors to have a Royal Event so close to home.”

“It’s fantastic to be able to offer our exhibitors the chance to compete at Royal level. A Royal Event attracts the best stock from around the country and top judges from around the world, so winning a Royal medal really is the highest honour in the showing movement.

The Canterbury A&P Show also hosts the largest equestrian event in the South Island with around 3,500 entries expected again this year. Christchurch’s interactive travel agency House of Travel Ferrymead recently moved into new premises and is offering a brand new, innovative and inspiring environment for customers and staff.

First-of-a-kind interactive store House of Travel Ferrymead opened its doors at 987 Ferry Road in late September, after 18 months operating from a port-a-com nearby after their previous store was damaged.

New owners Mel Lowen and Kim Beswick are excited to have moved into a permanent home in Ferrymead and what that move now means for their customers.

Mel and Kim have worked at the Ferrymead branch for six and 10 years respectively, and purchased the business early this year. They say their team is excited to have moved into the new premises and are motivated about doing business in a dynamic and different way.

It’s a ‘first-of-its-kind’ House of Travel concept store in the new business hub in Ferrymead and has been designed with the future in mind.

“After almost two years in the port-a-com, we learnt that having desks between us and our clients is not the most effective way to collaborate,” Mel says.

“The new store is about creating an interpersonal space like your favourite café. We’re working wirelessly and have invested in the latest technology, with a strong emphasis on images and video to help our customers visualise their dream holiday.

New brewery adds to the flavour When Richard Emerson returned from overseas – time well spent experiencing a diverse and delectable palette of beers – he wanted to create a brand that offered the same variety and premium punch of flavour to those in New Zealand, and in 1992 Emerson’s was born.

In January of 1993 Emerson’s brewed its first range and it’s been producing mouthwatering, thirst-quenching boutique beers ever since, gradually expanding production as demand allowed.

Greg says it’s the “consistent attention to premium quality, flavour and drinkable balance” behind Emerson’s popularity.

The craft beer industry has certainly grown rapidly over the past decade, but Emerson’s stays pertinent by not only consistently producing balanced, flavoursome beers, but also educating customers about the beers, matching certain flavours with certain foods and exploring new flavour combinations.

From small beginnings as a dairy and fish and chip shop in Dunedin, the Gill family, originally from Chandigarh in the Punjab, now has a chain of restaurants throughout New Zealand, from Auckland to Invercargill.

What makes the food at these restaurants special is the attention to detail in the selection and training of the chefs. All the head chefs at Little India restaurants come from the subcontinent, but before they are allowed to set foot in New Zealand restaurants, they are vetted and trained by the now 87 year-old matriarch of the Gill family - grandmother Premjit Kaur Gill - in the kitchen of the family home in Chandigarh.

Premjit has been carrying out this role since the first group of Indian chefs was recruited for Little India restaurants nearly 20 years ago.

Premjit tests the chefs’ cooking abilities, knife skills, recipe and spice knowledge. She also determines whether they will be a good fit for working in the New Zealand environment. The result is consistency throughout the country in the quality of the food at Little India restaurants.

The recipes used at the restaurants also come from Premjit Kaur Gill. She knows that the secret to the delicious flavours and aromas of Indian cuisine is in the blending and

European fare and flair The residential suburb of Styx Mill will soon be home to a new European influenced wine bar and restaurant, expected to grace the affluent suburb by the New Year.

The hospitality offering will replace the existing Jagz of Styx Mill restaurant, nestled comfortably within the city’s northern framework.

Its new owners Sabina and Sergio Toader bought the restaurant just over a year ago after moving from Romania. After purchasing the restaurant they decided to give it their personal touch and reinvent the business.

Jagz will undergo a rebranding and total transformation throughout, including a new name yet to be revealed, and new interior décor with updated furniture and a fresh colour palette.

“The interior design will be built around the wine bar concept; we are going to change everything as it’s a bit worn out and conservative. The new look will be more colourful and brighter with a lot of great lighting and backlit wine shelves,” she says.

While the interior will change, the food will stay similar to the existing menu. It will offer everything from café style cabinet food during the day, to a la carte dining for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with accompanying wine pairings. Plus wine platters made to be enjoyed with a great drop and a long sun-soaked afternoon.

The couple are passionate about wine and so the wine bar concept was a logical decision.

They’ve already introduced a number of new international and local wines onto the menu, with more yet to come. “We are looking forward to working the flash Kiwi, European style menu around the wines,” Sabina says.

The pair were initially surprised by the New Zealand hospitality culture when they first took over the business, saying “people just don’t have the same culture of going out like they do in Europe”.

They hope to change that with the communitybased restaurant, creating a spot locals and people throughout the city feel comfortable visiting for a catch up with friends and family any night of the week over a relaxed drink or meal.

Culinary creations from the heart of town Christchurch’s newest central city corner café, Table at Monks, is on a mission to serve up consistently great coffee and spectacular food.

“Consistency is our key. We want to make sure that if someone comes in today they’ll get the same great coffee and the same great food next week. So we put the emphasis on consistency and we’re succeeding and getting a good name because of it,” owner and chef, Richard Monk says.

The menu is creative making use of modern and seasonal food, but also offers up well known classics that have that special touch of flavour and class. The brunch items are proving popular, as is the salmon and green pea risotto, and Richard’s home-grown pies - salmon, brie and pesto, and the beef, red wine and vegetable.

A chef for more than 25 years, Richard and his wife Banu Monk were looking for a challenge, so they launched Table at Monks; a boutique, cosy café with an outdoor courtyard just a stone’s throw away from the Margaret Mahy playground.

Table at Monks is Richard’s first venture into the café industry under his own steam, having previously worked for a number of large Christchurch cafés and restaurants during the past three decades. “I wanted something different - a crossover between a café and a restaurant – taking the best qualities of both. People can enjoy the great cabinet food or order something really nice off the menu at a good price,” he says.

It’s still early days for Table at Monks, but already the café is drawing regulars for their ritual morning coffee fix and tasty treat from the fully stocked cabinet, as well as a steady stream of punters in the weekend looking for a leisurely brunch or lunch.

When Graham and Sons was formed there were few businesses focusing on floor coverings, drapes and other home decor services. This family business was the first in the Rangiora area solely dedicated to floor coverings.

With Graham and Sons it is truly “all in the family” and flooring has been in their blood since Don’s father laid lino in Invercargill in the 1930s. “To quote an old cliché,” Don says, “we all have carpet fluff in our veins.”

Ron and Don were joined in the business in 1958 by their brothers Lionel and Warren. All four of them were flooring tradesmen. Now Don is the patriarch of the firm assisted by his wife Gwen and their sons Malcolm and Ian who, with 20 years of experience, are the current vinyl and carpet installers.

“What we say to families at this particular moment can affect them for the rest of their lives.” So being experienced, thoughtful and qualified is a must.

Starting up her own company as a woman in the male-dominated funeral profession of the mid-1990s was far from easy for Cheryl. She could have given up many times because of the obstacles that were put in her way.

But Cheryl is a very determined woman and she believed there was “something” missing in the profession of the day. That something is a woman’s compassion, and the ability to be understanding and empathetic, yet still totally professional.

As Cheryl puts it, “We feel for the families, as we too have experienced personal loss, but we remain distant from the heart-wrenching feelings that the families are going through.”

Cheryl was joined in the company in 1997 by her daughter Lauren who is also qualified in all aspects of funeral directing. Lauren says she knew from the age of 12 that she wanted to be a funeral director, to look after people in their time of need.

“Lauren is very good with families,” says Cheryl and I am very proud of her. She is such an integral part of what this company believes in.”

There is another member of this all-woman team and she probably should have been mentioned earlier. Her name is Daizie, (the dog); she’s known as “The boss” and she comes to the funeral home every day.

Customwood maker marks 40 years in the local market Kiwis – when we’re not developing ingenious responses to complex dilemmas, we’re formulating new and improved ways to work with existing products.

While the development of New Zealand made medium-density fibreboard (MDF) brand Customwood® clearly fits into the latter category, the development of the Ashley plant and the world-leading technology behind it means it can equally fit into the former category.

MDF is an engineered wood product made from breaking hardwood or softwood residuals down into wood fibres, combining them with wax and a binder (resin), and using high temperature and pressure to form panels.

But in true Kiwi style, visionary entrepreneur Owen Haylock recognised the potential to utilise virtually worthless ‘waste’ wood for its production, reducing pressure on the world’s remaining indigenous forests and this innovation set the path for the world-leading company that stands today, 40 years on.

Unlike the vast majority of the world’s MDF, the resulting MDF product Customwood® is made from the waste product of exotic plantationgrown radiata pine trees. “We take the waste product from the logging/sawmilling process and manufacture a highly versatile product,” Daiken New Zealand domestic sales manager, Guy Nurse explains.

“About 60 percent of the raw material is in the form of logs unsuitable for structural lumber, the other 40 percent comes as wood chips produced by local saw mills as waste from processing timber products.”

The firm’s Ashley plant is strategically located closer to these forests and, because Canterbury’s strong north-westerly winds and low rainfall mean a lot of the wood lacks the strength or characteristics to be suitable for timber, there is plenty of raw material available.

This year marks 40 years since the Ashley plant was commissioned, putting New Zealand at the forefront of industrial wood utilisation technology. Construction of the plant began in 1975, with the first MDF coming off the production line the following year.

Just three years later, in 1979, the Prestigious Furniture Industries Research Association of Great Britain chose Customwood® as the best international fibreboard product, raising MDF’s international profile and in 1985 Carter Holt Harvey purchased the MDF plant.

Two Japanese companies – Daiken Corporation and Itochu Corporation – established Daiken New Zealand Limited in 2009, purchasing

the plant from Carter Holt Harvey and endeavouring to build on the existing success of the plant by raising the standard and efficiency of production.

The Daiken New Zealand MDF plant at Ashley in North Canterbury was only the 13th MDF plant in the world, and the first in the Southern Hemisphere, when it was built in 1976. Back then MDF was a totally new product and presented many engineering challenges.

Building on decades of team work and capital investment, Daiken New Zealand continues to perfect the technology required to process an inherently variable natural fibre and turn it into a consistently high-quality product.

During the past four decades, the Ashley operation has been responsible for many worldfirst breakthroughs in MDF production.

“We’ve changed significantly in some ways, but not at all in others,” Guy explains. “The basic process of producing MDF is very similar, though there have been many additions and improvements to the process over the years.

“The same production line that was first commissioned in 1976 is still in operation, so we’re still utilising that same technology. That line has had further investment, but the lifespan that was first pitched was 15-20 years, now 40 years on it is still operating at a very high level of quality and efficiency.

“Even though some of its components are as old as the plant, it is still running as efficiently as it ever has. It really is a tribute to those who helped commission the line, and those who have had a hand in its maintenance and development since then.

Focus | Daiken New Zealand In 2000 the New Zealand plant at Ashley was the first plant outside Japan to meet the new Japanese low-formaldehyde emission standards and, in 2001, it developed new ultralight panels for the USA market.

In the early days MDF was often ‘speckled’ because of small lumps of resin. To produce more uniform consistency and colour the Ashley plant’s engineers experimented with a new blowline resin blending technique which remains a worldwide standard for MDF manufacture.

To increase the strength of Customwood® MDF, without using more material and adding more weight, adequate internal bonding was required. The plant responded by pioneering ‘Doc’s cycle’. This consisted of changes to the operation of the press so the density could be varied throughout its profile, enhancing the product for many uses. This allowed new panels to be created that were sufficiently strong for structural uses such as flooring.

In the early 2000s there was a demand from the North American market for an MDF panel suitable for use as mouldings and skirting. It needed to be extremely (ultra) light, but still have the superb machining characteristics of Customwood® MDF. The production team responded by once again innovating the pressing cycle technique to be able to maximise distribution of fibres into the core of the panel and so provide excellent machinability.

Daiken New Zealand also offers products that meet the stringent Japanese Industry Standards, MDF panels with the lowest formaldehyde emission available on the market. “The plant has seen significant safety improvements over the years, continually improving as things have changed in the manufacturing industry,” Guy says.

“Also as the environmental impacts of large "scale manufacturers have become more of a focus for the public and regulatory bodies, so the plant has had to change to comply with these new and ever evolving regulations. The most notable consents for a plant like ours relate to limiting dust and formaldehyde emissions both to atmosphere and within the factory for our workers’ health and safety, noise, and also to ensure our effluent discharge does not impact on the local and culturally significant waterways."

“As part of the business’ operation, we also manage 139Ha of farmland that acts as a buffer for our effluent, and allows for waste water storage in the winter and irrigation in the summer to protect the nearby aquifers and waterways.

“Improvement projects on-site are constant and have seen minor and major work undertaken.

The plant’s energy centre has been massively upgraded over the years, and as recently as a couple of years ago we added a machine called a ‘Z-Sifter’ that sifts wood fibres before the MDF mat is formed at the start of the press. The most significant change was the development and installation of the continuous press in 1994.”

The addition of new technology (primarily the addition of the second press line), has more

than doubled the capacity of the plant, which produces more than 500 cubic metres of Customwood® MDF between its two production lines every day.

Today Customwood® MDF is a household name, setting the standard for MDF worldwide because of its colour, consistency and quality; attributes which make it an excellent product for applications which require consistent performance, stability and a fine finish.

Globally those applications include interior furniture, joinery and cabinetry, doors, walls, ceilings, flooring, staircases, shop fittings, mouldings, film sets, ceiling fans, picture frames, toys, trophies and even shoe heels.

Daiken New Zealand prides itself on producing what it considers the best medium density fibreboard (MDF) in the world. Its predecessors pioneered the technology in the southern hemisphere, with the Ashley plant continuing to refine it today.

Since the early days of production Japan has been its biggest export market and it’s the Japanese insistence on consistent quality that has developed an enduring culture of technical know-how and product excellence.

The plant operates around the clock, 365 days a year, excluding downtime for maintenance and improvements. A total of 180 Daiken staff members make up the Ashley plant, with a production team running four teams of 20 on a roster cycle and the balance made up of technical, production management, sales, logistics, IT and management/accounts/ administration. Supporting Daiken’s in-house staff is a huge team of dedicated subcontractors, all helping to add value to the operation.

It’s estimated that Daiken NZ contributes up to $95m to the local Canterbury economy through employment, sub-contractors, material purchases and trickle down to other suppliers to its operation.

Taking kiwi flavour to the world Quince, in its raw state, is typically so hard, sour and astringent that in Turkey, the world’s largest quince producer, “to eat the quince” is slang meaning “to get into serious trouble”.

But in a nation of innovators where we have a habit of taking things and making them better, the humble quince has been transformed into a fruit paste with global appeal.

New Zealand firm Rutherford Meyer has not only transformed the quince into these outstanding pastes, but has also added Plum, Cherry, Fig, Apricot, Pear and Pomegranate to the range.

Like many small New Zealand businesses, this now thriving export business started as a cottage industry in 1996, when two North Canterbury farming friends, Gay Rutherford and Alison Meyer, took old family recipes which were used for preserving the surplus ripe fruit from the summer harvest and used these as the basis for their fruit pâté recipes.

Recognising an exciting opportunity, their vision was simply to take something that had been enjoyed in the farm kitchens of North Canterbury and share it with others, both within New Zealand and throughout the world.

In 2001 Jan Meyer and Russell Coventry bought the business, which continues to operate as a small and dedicated team of foodies who are passionate about creating gourmet products.

The product range has grown considerably and now includes Gourmet Wafers, Gluten Free Rice Wafers, Waferbites, and Honey Plus, in addition to the Fruit Pastes, which continue to grow in popularity.

“We’re a much bigger team. When we first started we did everything from the accounts, running production to the packing of orders to setting up all the Quality Assurance (QA) procedures, as well as the selling. Now these roles are carried out by team members who are much better at it than we are.

“But importantly, areas such as (QA) and health and safety (H&S) have become increasingly important and a real focus for the company.

We have had to ensure our processes are strong in both areas.

“It’s not just about making products and selling it, it’s about ensuring our products are safe for others to eat and that our team are safe; that they leave at the end of the day to see their families at night.”

“It’s been hard work getting established in the US,” Jan says. “Particularly when you’re the only product in your category, which is only just beginning to change with Fonterra recently starting to break into the market in a smaller way.”

While New Zealand is still exciting for people, the gloss has started to come off in some ways. “When we first started in the US, the words New Zealand would open doors and, while there is still some mystique about New Zealand, it doesn’t quite open doors in the same way as it did,” she says.

“There is a lot of work that needs to go on so that the international community recognises New Zealand for the wonderful food we produce.

We’re recognised for our wine, lamb and Peter Jackson, but New Zealand is still not recognised for its food as a whole.

“We think about places like Italy for their olive oils and parmesan cheese, and France for their breads and cheese, but we haven’t developed that level of recognition for New Zealand yet.

“A lot more work needs to go into New Zealand food, but currently there aren’t a lot of food producers exporting to the US, other than lamb and beef companies. The vast majority is bulk and there are not a lot of niche valueadded products.

“Long term we will be working to increase our penetration and sell-through in the US. We’ve still got a long way to go. The US is a massive country and although we’re there now, we need to do a lot more education on our product to help the sell-through of our products.” CT

The carbon equation

The world needs carbon-in, not carbon-out

Organic products straight from the plains One of New Zealand’s oldest organic-focused export companies is continuing to cement its position as an industry leader, as it innovates and re-launches its core functional food product line.

As long as the world releases more carbon into the atmosphere than it captures, there’ll be climate change… but it can be reversed.

If we stopped releasing carbon from the soil into the atmosphere and captured it instead, then the serious problem of global warming could be solved.

That’s the view of international soil scientist, Dr John Baker, who says, in relation to soil, there’s more “carbon going out than coming in” and the world has reached a stage where the process must be reversed. When it is, there won’t be a problem with climate change.

John points out we recycle bottles and plastics but not carbon, and the time to start recycling carbon is long overdue.

“There’s more CO2 in the atmosphere and less in the soil than ever before,” he says. “While the first crucial step is to grow more plants, it’s even more important to ensure the carbon that existing plants absorb from the atmosphere through photosynthesis remains in the soil.”

At the moment carbon is squandered. About 50 percent is lost when food is harvested, but John says that’s acceptable because it’s why we grow food in the first place.

But as much carbon again remains as straw, stubble and roots after harvest and, if this is removed, burnt or incorporated, then most of it gets back into the atmosphere where it contributes to global warming.

“Instead we must retain the crop residue after harvest and offer the carbon to the soil microbes. They decompose it and earthworms and other fauna take it into the soil which enriches it,” he says.

“The future of mankind depends on harnessing the biology in the soil and making it work for us. The impact would be massive if the uneaten carbon that food crops gather globally was transferred into the soil and stayed there.”

The good news is that the world doesn’t need to invent new technologies to make it happen.

New Zealand already has the machinery to work through the crop residues and thereby transfer the carbon into the soil and lead the world in solving this particular climate change issue.

Dr Baker explains that only four percent of the world’s surface can grow crops. The rest is water, mountains, highways and the ever increasing urban sprawl, so it’s important to maximise the land that’s available.

“New Zealand is very effective in growing crops, but ineffective in recycling the carbon that the crops gather. By releasing it back into the atmosphere through tillage or burning we contribute to climate change and destroy the nutrients,” he reiterates.

“What we have to do is stop ploughing and burning and instead use low-disturbance no-tillage. It’s a no-brainer, especially when we already have the best low-disturbance, no-tillage machines in the world.”

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) predicts there are only 60 harvests left in the world. After that there’ll be widespread famine with insufficient food to feed a population that will increase by 50 percent within 40 years.

“In fact the lack of carbon in the soil is more scary than its presence in the atmosphere.

If carbon-out continues to exceed carbon-in, some people are eventually going to starve,” he says. “Far too often man seems to be such a stupid animal.”

The technology already researched, tested and built in New Zealand, is being sold to 20 countries where centuries of traditional methods of cultivation have raped the soil, making it no longer able produce enough food.

They sow the seed and fertiliser in separate bands at the same time. The process traps the humidity, preserves the micro-organisms and soil life and prevents the carbon from escaping.

“What we’re doing is swapping the balance so there’s more carbon-in than carbon-out. The method confronts climate change and increases the amount of food that the world produces at the same time,” he says. “It’s a win-win if ever there was one.

“The side benefit will be food that’s less expensive and land that is more sustainable.

Good quality soil can produce food indefinitely because we’re recycling the carbon and enriching the soil.

“In doing so New Zealand also starts meeting its treaty obligations reached at the Paris Climate Change Conference last December.” CT

The upstairs flooring was rebuilt, as the hallway had sunk in one corner, and the entire house lined with fire-proof gib. The interior panelling was fully restored back to its former natural state.

The church is another piece of history Brian and Bernice Cribb have salvaged and has been restored to a high standard for use in the future as a venue for weddings.

The Canterbury building firm is run by brothers Tony and Nick Griffiths who say they enjoy nothing more than putting in a hard days work in the outdoors, keeping their clients happy and enjoying a cold beer at the end of the day.

Some might call their style old fashion, but the brothers hit the nail on the head with every job they complete. The proof is the work that keeps coming in, not through advertising, but by word of mouth referrals from its satisfied customers.

“We are pretty straight-up and honest guys who like to keep our clients involved all the way along. We work hard to get the best result possible on every job – that’s our bottom line,” Tony says.

The duo completed their building apprenticeships in New Zealand before heading off overseas individually, where they continued building. In 2007, a few years after they both returned, the brothers came together to start Griffbuild.

Now, having been in business for almost a decade, Griffbuild is a part of the Canterbury landscape. The brothers have 35 years’ combined experience in the industry, so clients can be confident they are in competent hands.

Tony says the businesses work initially started in extensions, renovations and new home builds. However, the massive residential rebuild caused by the earthquake kicked its workload into gear.

“After the earthquake we were heavily involved in the Fletcher Residential Home Repair Programme, subcontracting to them. We are still doing the odd bit of the Fletcher remedial work now.”

Whilst the residential rebuild is coming to an end, the effect it’s had on the building industry is still having an impact. “Competition has increased and subcontractors’ rates have gone through the roof.

“The good guys who do a good job and are well established have been shafted by cowboys who have walked into town and picked up inexperienced subbies who are cheaper and are undercutting the established companies.

They are getting the work despite the fact they aren’t skilled.”

In the midst of the competitive industry Griffbuild has maintained its trusted and longestablished team of “excellent subbies who doa damn good job”.

Tony says it’s now re-focusing the businesses direction and it is moving back into the residential new build market. Leading the re-focus is a new build it has just completed in Lincoln.

“The house is high-spec and architecturally designed, the exterior is clad with cedar weatherboards and Rockcote to create a high-end look.”

High Country Carpentry’s award winning ways Two builds and seven House of the Year awards

The 2016 Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition was just the second time High Country Carpentry had entered the competition, but much like the Gold and Silver awards the South Canterbury firm took out last year, the company’s two 2016 entries again impressed, taking out a whopping seven awards between them.

It’s a fitting way to celebrate 10 years in business for the company which started when Lain and Heather Hellmrich brought together a specialised team of skilled tradesmen who lived, worked and played in the region.

There had been somewhat of a boom in the Mackenzie District in the early 2000s which saw large building firms entering the market with little experience of the unique environmental extremes faced by South Canterbury’s homes and their inhabitants.

Even a lot of their building materials are locally grown, with Douglas Fir, Macrocarpa and Larch timber used in many of their homes, with stone, glass and other natural materials also adding to the integrity of their buildings.

“In Christchurch the houses are designed to make the most of small spaces, because the houses are surrounded,” Lain explains.

While these companies have adapted many of their practices and “off-the-shelf” plans for a best fit, there was still a large demand for local builders to build homes they would stand-by in the years to come.

“In South Canterbury, many of our homes are in open, expansive areas, with no neighbours.

So the design needs to be a lot stronger and more durable, because they’re open to the elements and, as a result, they get hammered by the weather.

Property & Construction | High Country Carpentry It’s an environment which proved ideal for the log cabin-style home in Oamaru. Outside, the pitched gables and logs stacked to curve demand a closer look. The approach is, in fact, very down to earth – all locally sourced Douglas Fir logs.

And despite its heavy duty look, the 300sqm, two storey structure treads lightly in its environment.

Fully self-sufficient, the three bedroom, two bathroom home takes care of its own power, water and heating. It’ll deliver the goods for five days without solar gain, at which point a back-up generator kicks in.

A Rayburn cooker powers underfloor heating and radiators, while baking bread and boiling the kettle. Bright red accents – from cabinetry and appliances to the freestanding bath – break up the widespread use of timber, with high bi-fold windows opening wide for that outdoorbathing effect.

“The client was a great lady and it was really enjoyable working with her,” Lain says.

“These homes are amazing places, but it really comes down to the clients. We’re just carrying out what is the client’s vision, so the success of these homes really comes down to great clients who are able to get their message and vision across.”

With the log house built as a shell, there is a settling process which involves the external logs shrinking as they dry. When the job is done well, most people will never see that this takes place.

“Living away from home for duration of both this build and the Twizel house were challenging, but physically the key challenges were the complexity of the roof structure and dealing with the settling process of the log shell. As the structure settles over time, we had to finish the house around that process.

“Rhys and I actually get to know our clients, which really makes the difference,” Kathryn says. “Rhys is involved at the front-end of the business and I am involved at the production end,” she adds.

“So this means that we can be involved in the whole client experience from start to finish.

We see that as a personal touch which people don’t necessarily get elsewhere. This enables us to get a very good handle on what our clients are looking for, so we can help manage their needs right through the process. It’s not only what we enjoy doing, but it makes it easier to do our job if we know the client and they know us.”

Rhys says “Kathryn and my skills cover the board, from sales right through to maintenance of the home afterwards”.

But he’s quick to point out that the company’s local success certainly hasn’t been a single handed effort. “We’ve got a great team behind us as well,” he says.

“What we’re demonstrating is that we will deal with a wide variety of clients, specialising in smaller in-fill type housing, retirement dwellings and investment properties,” Rhys says.

“We can do very simple homes through to large sophisticated homes, and lifestyle blocks are another area we’re interested in continuing to develop into, covering the local city and as far as Amberley to the north, Oxford to the west, Rakaia to the South and out to Akaroa.

“We have an affordable show home aimed at the likes of first-home buyers at Prestons and a higher spec’ show home in Wigram Skies, with two new show homes coming over the next year.” CT

The Superhome Movement The perception that an energy efficient home is too expensive is a myth The proverbial Kiwi dream has, for many years, been built on a quarter acre section. But with soaring energy costs, the new Kiwi dream is less about section size and more about energy efficiency.

But energy efficient homes are expensive, right?

Not so, according to Martin Reilly of Ecomaster, one of the names behind the Superhome Movement.

Alongside director of Christchurch architectural design firm, Bob Burnett Architecture, Martin is spearheading the movement which aims to break down the misconceptions about the affordability of energy efficiency.

At its core, the Superhome Movement is all about providing the best in education, products and expertise to help people build warm, dry, healthy, energy efficient and environmentally sound homes.

“This was really Bob Burnett’s vision,” Martin explains.

The secret to having no power bills are the 18 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels which power a heat pump that multiplies the PV power by four.

This thermal energy is then stored in the unique hot water cylinder and fully insulated concrete slab, with salt water battery power as a backup energy storage solution.

A daylight sensor means the system is off at night, and by eliminating thermal bridging or leaked heat, 20°C is maintained even when there is frost outside.

The 140sqm home uses a new Gibfix® framing system, which significantly reduces the amount of timber used, allowing room for additional insulation.

“Bob was in the process of building what would later become the first 10-star home in New Zealand at 11 Church Square in Christchurch - this was something which was very important to him.”

The design includes insulated edges of the concrete floor slab, a solar wall linked to an energy recovery ventilation system and recessed European style uPVC windows, combined rain-water and grey water systems, water-efficient fittings and a solar-powered electric-car charging port.

The home at 11 Church Square has been available for public viewing since August 5, 2015 and a second show home at 9 Church Square has since been added to the line-up.

There are elements that won’t have universal appeal, so it’s about taking the aspects that work for you.”

A small team that’s making its mark Steve Mallinson was putting last tile in the bathroom when the February 2011 earthquake hit. That was a Tuesday. By the Thursday him and his crew at Steve Mallinson Contracting had been engaged as the first contractor for Hawkins.

It’s certainly a big change from architectural homes, but perhaps that’s what makes Steve Mallinson Contracting so good at what they do.

Steve has, after all, the attention to detail to be able to do fine joinery work, skills which are seldom developed in civil gangs.

“I think being a builder in the civil world, we’ve been able to bring the finer details to retaining walls and with that, the ability to do a quality job. If something isn’t right, we will make it right.

It’s not hard to spend another couple of hours making something look good, but that’s not something people do for retaining walls.

“We’ve been very adaptable, probably one of the most adaptable firms around, because we’ve done everything – the swimming pools, driveways, the demos, the excavation. Retaining walls have a good mix of everything; physical work and thinking work, it’s a good variety.

Some of these retaining walls are actually strong landmarks that we’re leaving behind.

“They must have had us on speed-dial,” he laughs. “It never stopped from there. I think I had one day off that year. We were working seven days a week, 14 hours a day.”

As an architectural builder who had gone out to work for himself in 2007, Steve was well versed in long hours.

He had previously been involved in a $3.5m architectural build in Wanaka, living on site for two years, doing 16 hour days before he came to Christchurch and moved into architectural renovation work. Then, of course, the spate of earthquakes that tore through the region from September 2010 changed everything.

Steve and his team started doing the “emergency triage” work for Hawkins. “We were honest and

reliable and didn’t try to be millionaires overnight like a lot of them were, so they started giving us more opportunities,” he says.

“Out of the first five $100,000+ repairs, we had the first three. We did those and then during that process, we got the opportunity to move into demolition, so we split the team in half.”

Residential Red Zone properties, doing up to 30 houses a month at the height of the demolition phase of the city-wide rebuild. “It was great, we were just the little underdog with less equipment, competing pretty well against the big boys,” he says.

“So we were doing lot of demolition and excavations and, as part of that, we were doing a lot of retaining walls. Being a builder, it was easy doing the civil stuff. It’s a different skillset.

“Now that demos have slowed down we’re doing all the big complex retaining walls and we’ve decided we really enjoy the challenge.”

“It’s all been down to hard work and having a good team behind us,” Steve says.

“I haven’t done it all myself, it’s been a team effort. We have a multi-skilled team of nine. Their skills link in and overlap.
