Southern attractions

Every New Zealander knows we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and over the past year, we’ve welcomed a record three million visitors, which is fantastic news.

This milestone is a great testament to New Zealand’s tourism industry, and to the hard work of all those involved in the sector. Not only are record numbers of visitors coming to New Zealand, they’re also staying for longer and spending more than ever before.

In the year to July, those three million visitors spent a total of $8.7 billion during their stay – up 28 percent on the previous 12 months. This is helping to boost our economy – not only in our main cities, but also in the regions, and creating more jobs and opportunities for New Zealanders.

The South Island tourism industry in particular is thriving.

Christchurch saw an increase of almost 440,000 international visitors in the past year and it’s estimated those visitors spent around $837 million during their stay. Tourism operators in Canterbury have had to face some unique and difficult challenges and these results are evidence of their perseverance and innovation.

The tourism industry is a significant part of New Zealand’s economy – it’s our second biggest export earner, contributing around seven percent to our GDP. That’s why the National-led Government has invested an unprecedented $600 million in tourism and tourism promotion.

That’s also why we’re investing in the New Zealand Cycle Trail, which consists of 23 great rides across the country, to help attract more tourists. These include the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and the St James Cycle Trail in the Canterbury region.

Given everything the region has been through during the past five years, it’s encouraging to see more people are feeling positive about their lives in the latest wellbeing survey, even though many people are still dealing with significant stress.

As momentum in the rebuild continues, it’s also great to see anchor projects progressing that benefit not only those in the city, but tourists visiting too.

The second and final stage of Christchurch’s new $53 million Bus Interchange opened in recent months – the first Governmentled anchor project to be completed. Others like the Avon River Precinct and Justice and Emergency Services Precinct are also well advanced.

The first of the South Island cycleways to be funded by the Government’s Urban Cycleways Programme have also opened in Canterbury, helping make cycling a safer, more attractive transport choice for thousands of people.

I’m looking forward to reaching our next milestone in tourism and in the progress of the Canterbury rebuild.

Advisory groups are a great addition to any small and medium enterprise, adding capability to the company in areas such as leadership and management, team development, sales and marketing, HRM, internal processes and operations.

Businesses of all sizes can benefit from having their own team of external advisors.

An advisory group is a team of people selected by the owners of the business (or a Board if the business is large enough) to guide, counsel and advise a company’s CEO and management on any number of issues in a flexible open and consultative manner.

Advisors from different disciplines complement the strengths and expertise of the company’s management. Typically they may include a business coach, the company accountant, or a specialist in any other discipline as required. Advisory groups can be standing (ongoing) or ad hoc (one time) in nature.

The advisory group members will have a range of skill sets that will add to and therefore assist the company. An advisory group is particularly useful in start-up and small companies, providing fresh ideas and unique perspectives.

Support and guidance from your advisory group may give you a greater chance to accelerate growth, improve financial performance, manage risk and enhance operational performance.

The whole point of having an advisory group is to improve the company performance by tapping in to the skills of the members.

Companies considering setting up an advisory group must answer a key question: “Why we are establishing an advisory group and what do we want out of it?”

Thinking carefully about an advisory board’s purpose will ensure that it will be structured to maximise its contribution to an organisation’s success.

An advisory group should consist of the owner and people with skills and or experience who can add value to the business.

Group members must have the background experience and skill sets to add value through their capabilities matching the company needs.

The nature of what is sought should determine the type of people who will comprise the board. The group must clearly define its purpose and desired outcomes. Membership should represent a good balance and have the right chemistry to work their way through various issues that may arise. Compatibility is very important.

They are mechanisms to improve your company performance through the addition of different skills sets, fresh ideas and all in a non-threatening open, collaborative, consultative, user friendly environment. In effect, they are a safe harbour for discussing ideas and initiatives.

The resources boom in Australia during the last 10 years and subsequent construction activity has seen employee wages skyrocket and many businesses become unsustainable.

Now, companies scrambling to remain competitive are making significant redundancies with some sectors seeing as many as 20,000 jobs disappear in one state.

From 2006, wages in the resource and resource-related construction sectors increased by as much as 100 percent.

In many cases, companies paid workers above market salaries to simply attract and retain them - in some cases at the sacrifice of hiring for competency, experience, cultural fit and attitude.

Ultimately, businesses and companies performed poorly due to high wage costs, poor employee engagement, lack of leadership and high staff turnover.

Like the Australia resource boom, New Zealand, and especially the Canterbury earthquake rebuild, has entered an unprecedented growth period similar to the one we noticed in our Brisbane office in the 2006 boom. Companies that continue to focus on hiring staff with the right cultural fit, attitude, level of competency for the position, and ultimately keep a conservative approach to salaries, will build a workforce that is sustainable, engaged and will ultimately deliver high productivity.

The key to growing staff numbers sustainably in any business is having competent leadership, as staff generally leave their leader and not the business. A salary increase is a short term motivator. If businesses focus on strong leadership, especially in middle management, promote career development opportunities, drive a high performance culture in a fun environment, and give staff challenging work, pay will be well down the scale as to why staff will leave your business.

Like Australia, some sectors in New Zealand could experience a changing market at some stage in the future.

However, this may not be to the same extent as the impact of the resources downturn in Australia, so businesses who kept their cost base competitive or had flexibility to handle cost pressures, would remain sustainable into the future.

More importantly, businesses that place emphasis on attracting and nurturing ‘A-players’ through driving an engaged and productive workforce will not only prosper, they will flourish.

People are the foundation of any business and if hiring standards drop to meet the growth demand, learning and development ceases and middle management are promoted beyond their competency, long term business sustainability will be hard to achieve.

In August the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) and the Commission for Financial Capability (CFFC) released a survey of more than 1,000 people who were over 50 years of age about their expectations for retirement.

Nearly half have yet to do any retirement planning, a quarter have never completed an investment risk profile questionnaire and, of most concern, all respondents on average believed that an investment return starts to become ‘fairly high’ only when it hits a whopping 15 percent.

I took three main points from my reading of the results.

First, it is clear that many people need to do more planning.

The survey found that 46 percent of respondents hadn’t done any planning about their retirement. This is a concern given how important it is to set investment objectives and plan retirement goals.

Secondly, most people are risk averse when it comes to investing.

Of those surveyed, 83 percent believe high risk investments are to be avoided.

Lastly, the survey shows that many people have unrealistic return expectations. Following ongoing falls in interest rates, a softer growth outlook and lower dividend yields on shares, our research team have recently further reduced their long-term return forecasts for a balanced portfolio to around five percent to six percent, depending on the mix of assets.

Compare that with the results of the survey which showed that respondents on average thought a five percent return to be fairly low, nine percent to be a medium return, and 15 percent to be fairly high. In my view, the ‘medium’ and ‘fairly high’ returns would require an investor to take extraordinarily high risks to achieve.

Remember, the people who expect these returns are the same people who, a few questions earlier, also said that high risk investments are to be avoided. Something clearly doesn’t add up. This is the key takeaway from the survey for me - most investors have a chronic misalignment in expectations between risk and return.

Advisers face this every day, which is why educating investors about risk and return is such a key part of their role. They also have to ensure that retirement planning is based on realistic returns to avoid people either not saving enough for retirement or, when retired, taking unsustainable drawings from their capital.

It’s topical… should your accounting solutions be “in the cloud?” We’re going to answer that with a… maybe.

No, that doesn’t mean we are not prepared to commit – instead we are making a stand that one size does not fit all.

Imagine for a moment you’re wearing a business “onesie”.

Yes it might look cute, yes, it might be functional – but is it right for you long term? Maybe!

A study from the Ministry of Economic Development in September 2011 showed 68.9 percent of New Zealand enterprises had zero employees, a further 20.8 percent had five or less employees… so 89.7 percent cumulatively have five or less employees.

Compliance costs can be out of hand. For the small business owner cloud accounting solutions can be just the ticket for you – especially with so many add-ons for the little idiosyncrasies that your business may have - from costings, quoting, job costing, payroll and the list goes on.

On the whole, small business owners underestimate how much cloud solutions can offer, especially when the very solution enables your outside advisers to login and work with you on a joint project; be that more clients, getting them back more often and thus increasing the transaction frequency, increasing prices and margins, or being better at your business processes.

They all accumulate to building a better business.

There are a number of online solutions available and it is all a matter of finding your needs and placing the perfect solution over the top.

I recently attended an international Human Factors and Ergonomics Congress in Melbourne. One of the overwhelming themes was around sedentary work practices and the risk to our long term health.

One of the workshops was around activity based work, a relatively new concept in terms of how we design our workplaces.

This focus appears to be driven by three components: the rising cost of office space, the use of sit stand desks, and sedentary work risks (with the well researched evidence on the increase in risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers).

Activity based work design focuses on looking at three areas: Behavioural aspects - when people work, are they in an office space all day or out and about some of the time, so do they need a permanent desk? Physical aspects - where people work - can they work at home part of the time, do they need to be in an office space? And virtual aspects - how people work - do they use laptops, tablets, smartphones or desk top technology?

What does activity based working actually look like?

People have their own personal lockers. There are desks available for them when they are in the office, breakout rooms when they want to avoid interruptions or take phone calls in private, flexible team working areas, more traditional desk based work areas for times when team connection is needed, meeting rooms with virtual technology, kitchens for time away from the desk to eat and socialise, and private rooms for space for sensitive meetings.

It can be likened to a neighbourhood-based working space, reflecting lifestyles and culture.

Herein lies part of the magic solution - you see you may not know the needs you have because it’s not uncommon to not know what you don’t know… so find someone who can help you with the basics, help you through the intermediate steps and then on to the big wide world that is self employment.

Effective technology systems are essential Use of effective technology systems is essential to this way of working. Basically, the workspace needs to be almost paperless.

This can be a huge challenge for some organisations, with one of the presenters recommending a three year lead time to prepare for this style of working.

Okay, so here you are in your onesie and maybe it’s a bit tight around the middle? Are the legs a bit short? Is the collar tight?

Yes it is functional – but it’s not going to get you where you need to go.

Understand and explore your options Of course, this approach is not for everyone. Issues that arise are privacy, space ownership/territoriality, identity and personalisation, equipment/resource availability and noise.

Your business adviser is just the same. Regrettably one size does not fit all. It might for a short while, but ultimately you’re going to outgrow it.

So find someone who can grow with you, as personality and ability are part of the equation. So are ability and expertise.

Above all let’s remember the purpose of a business is to ‘fund’ your lifestyle and create some fun on the way. If you’re not having fun, then maybe there’s a change afoot.

Is it for you?

Activity based working is certainly a different way of working and it does lend itself to more collaboration over a wider number of staff within an organisation.

Looking at the systems of your organisation as well as the type of work performed and the people who work for you - this is going to give you a much better long term result, whichever way you choose to work.

Thomas Edison was quoted as saying “Genius is one percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration”. I am reminded of this quote as I observe elements of our tall-poppy syndrome manifesting itself again in the under performing NZ business world.

An award winning business I know quite well has started to attract some derogatory attention. These disrespectful (and sometimes vitriolic attacks) come from a place that perfectly fits the Wikipedia definition of the tall-poppy syndrome; ‘a social phenomenon in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers’.

But I can tell you the reality is somewhat different.

This company started out like many other NZ SMEs; a part-time venture, operated out of the back garden by a young set of parents. As the years have rolled by and their workforce and profits have grown, all they are doing is daring to learn, daring to invest and daring to be accountable.

In personal terms, they are simply daring to dream, daring to play and daring to win so they can share their successes.

Behind the scenes what people can’t (or prefer not to) see when viewing successful people, is the relentless commitment they have to realising their potential. They don’t see the 99 percent perspiration Edison applied to his one percent inspiration.

The sad thing, in respect of NZ’s productivity performance, is the company in question is not doing anything that other companies could not do.

When the owner told me about the derogatory remarks he’d received, he said it was because competitors are effectively “leaving their lunch on the table”. What he means is that the marketplace is happy to invest in mediocrity and complacency, while his company is willing to invest in continuous improvement and regular accountability. In other words, they are seizing opportunity others are passing up.

Remember, not everything that inspired Edison demonstrated genius. Most people know he failed far more times than he succeeded. Likewise, modern business is the same.

The company I am talking about have had their fair share of hits, but they continue to display courage, self reliance and a determination. And like most successful people, any rewards they earn are simply a result of the 99 percent perspiration they apply to their one percent inspiration.

Be sure to remember the gravy train does not deliver without continuous effort. If you are not willing to continually perspire in the pursuit of fulfilling performance potential, don’t be surprised if someone wants to eat your lunch.

Fishing in a small pond Eugene de Villiers provides some tips for fishing in a small pond: how to snare the catch of the day and most importantly, ensuring it doesn’t get away.

What advice do you have for business owners who are new to recruiting staff?

You need to be very specific on the profile you are looking for. The more specific you are the more successful your recruiting drives will be.

In our organisation we give the heaviest weighting to cultural fit.

You can train people in the technical skills required, but no matter how technically capable staff are, if they are not passionate about customer service and going the extra mile, they are simply not going to fit our particular DNA. Don’t rush is one of the best pieces of advice I have ever been given. Don’t be tempted to employ someone because they almost fit the bill, as every time I have done that I have lived to regret it. Sometimes the perfect candidate doesn’t appear immediately, but the cost of employing someone who is not a perfect match is far more than a few months of patience.

How do you know if a candidate will be a good fit for your organisation’s culture?

New Zealand is a small place and asking referees the right questions is crucial to matching a candidate's profile to your organisation.

Because we have refined our profile we can significantly reduce the chances of a bad hire.

I also follow my own intuition (built up over many years), and nine times out of 10 I am right.

Another measure I use is whether the candidate would be a good fit with our customer base.

Might sound basic, but is so often overlooked.

Is it difficult to keep good staff? How do you make them happy?

Like most business owners, I have learned from trial and error. One of my biggest learning’s is that contrary to what many others might say – paying the big dollars doesn’t ensure staff will stay.

Retaining good staff is about customising their remuneration package. For example we have a number of working mothers in our team and so for them flexibility of hours is paramount.

Staff engagement is also very important.

We also have a shared lunch once a week where teams are nominated to prepare the meal, phones are turned off and we enjoy each other’s company without distraction. Whilst the days of Friday afternoon drinks have been toned down in terms of alcohol consumption, we encourage all team members to knock off early on a Friday and enjoy some friendly rivalry over the Foosball table. All of these things are low cost but high impact.

Poaching - what can you do to minimise this?

In the same way that the incentive programmes we design for our clients are bespoke, we take those principals and practice what we preach internally.

By listening to what is important to our staff then we can reward them accordingly, be it with flexible working hours, staff development opportunities or other meaningful incentives.

Because we believe that our staff are at the top of their game, then chances are our competitors will think so too and so it is inevitable that they may be approached to jump ship.

Employers who simply motivate their staff by dollars are far more vulnerable to poaching, as

ways to structure your day

From the moment we are born we enter a routine: eat, sleep, wash, repeat.

As time goes on these routines adapt, but even though ‘routine’ itself becomes almost instinctlike, our productivity can still suffer.

3. Comfort is key This might sound a little strange, but nothing makes me feel more empowered than a fresh pair of socks. Why? Because they bring me comfort, keep me warm and if my feet are comfortable on the ground, then so is the rest of my body. With this in mind, I also feel the most confident when I’m wearing clothes that make me feel good. Some jobs have strict dress codes, but if you can find a way to adapt your outfit to something a little more ‘you’, then you might feel more at ease and therefore more productive.

4. Treat yourself (read: bribe yourself)

Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your time in the office or wherever you call ‘work’.

For some people, simply getting through tasks and crossing things off your list isn’t satisfactory enough when powering through work sometimes we need a little bit more. If you can afford to, consider treating yourself at the end of the day, or week, or even per task. It doesn’t need to be anything huge. If bribery is what gets you through the day then so be it.

You may find that breaking up your day into time slots helps you define a purpose for each portion and therefore pushes you to complete the task at hand. This can be done through either separating out your mornings and afternoons for different kinds of work or allocating each hour to something specific. Whatever you do, plan your day first thing in the morning so you know exactly how your day should go.

Sometimes a heavy work load just comes with the job, but even so, you should really look into what is piling up and decide if that’s really your job or not. If you can delegate, do so, and if assignments or tasks keep coming your way that you probably won’t get on to, or perhaps you think someone else would do a better job of, then say so. The power of ‘no’ can sometimes be bigger than the power of ‘yes’.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that teaches you to “work with time, not against it”. By using a timer (usually one shaped like a tomato, hence the name ‘pomodoro’), the technique teaches you to break down work into blocks, usually by 25 minutes at a time, with each being separated by small breaks.

The idea is to avoid burnout by working for too long, eliminate distractions by giving yourself the short breaks and to create a better work/life balance by enhancing your productivity at work.

Arguments over a four day work week have had a neat little place on business blogs and news reports for years now, but despite the well-put reasoning around “less time equals more productivity,” they haven’t quite caught on yet. There are certain sectors that these conditions work really well for, but unfortunately not for all. However that doesn’t mean that you can’t adopt the idea behind it to work for yourself. It’s pretty straightforward to understand that the less time you have, the less you will

waste, so give yourself shorter time slots to do each task and you might find yourself speeding up and knocking jobs out the door.

7. Set the scene A little technique that some chefs use to organise their stations before getting to work is called “mise en place”, or “putting in place”.

By laying out your “tools” for the job before you start sets you up for success as everything you need is to hand, saving time and clearing mental fuzz.

A visible plan Having a visual aid for the work you have ahead of you not only kicks your butt into getting things done as it stares you in the face, but it also acts as a clear guideline of everything you need to do. Just like various studying techniques, drawing out a list of tasks helps clear your mind as you can focus on one thing at a time without trying to remember everything else.

9. Concentrate on the task at hand We all have various ways of working, but jumping from one task to another without completion can create mental fuzz and stagnate our work. Focus your energy on one task at a time and you might find it helps you get through things quicker.

10. Start small I find that easing myself into the day by focussing on smaller tasks first means that I have a very productive day. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, I don’t have to worry about small housework tasks in between my bigger bits of work – this takes away distractions and means I can be as efficient with my time as possible. Secondly, if I get to work on easier tasks first, it means I don’t spend any time thinking about how large or daunting my next tasks will be – it’s psychological really.

The patterns of highly successful people

Our daily routine largely shapes our performance, productivity and the accomplishments we make.

So logically we want to incorporate a routine into our lives that delivers the best results.

While there isn’t one routine that is guaranteed to generate a successful career, some of history’s most influential people centred their working day on very unique patterns, which arguably helped spur on their achievements.

Here is how some of the world’s most successful people spent their 24 days. Perhaps they’ll inspire you to shake up your daily routine for the better:

Winston Churchill When you think of a prime minister’s daily schedule some of the words that come to mind may be hectic, regimented and tiresome.

Chances are leisurely doesn’t feature on the list, but a leisurely start to the morning was a predominant aspect of Winston Churchill’s day.

The Prime Minister of Great Britain woke at 7:30am and lay in bed for the majority of the morning. He enjoyed breakfast in bed and then read his mail, the national newspapers and dictated letters to his secretaries. At 11am he’d rise for the day, bath and take a leisurely stroll in the garden.

His walk was followed by lunch with family and guests. The full three course meal was served at 1pm, which he’d enjoy while socialising well into the afternoon. At 3:30pm lunch was concluded and Winston would retire to his office to work.

He’d work for a little over an hour before taking a nap around 5pm, an important part of his routine. Dinner was at 8pm, again enjoyed with family and friends, followed by another hour of work before bed.

Barack Obama If anyone needs a solid routine to help them fit everything into 24 hours it’s the President of the United States. And it seems Barack Obama

has a well organised routine that not only allows him to spend time with his family, but also run a country.

At 7am he wakes and heads straight to the White House gym to exercise for an hour.

Then he eats breakfast, which has been chosen for him, with his wife and daughters.

He reads the newspapers and hits the Oval Office around 9am.

In the evening he makes a point of eating dinner with his family before returning to work. Among his nightly responsibilities is leafing through the binder of documents that his staff have asked him to review.

Once Michelle goes to bed at 10pm he enjoys some alone time. He watches ESPN, surfs his iPad, reads books, and calls foreign leaders in different time zones, until he finally goes to bed around 1am.

Jack Dorsey Co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Square, Jack Dorsey, has a hectic work schedule. He runs two businesses full time putting in a mammoth 16 hour work day, split evenly between eight hours at each business.

He manages to juggle working full time for two companies simultaneously with the help of a very disciplined routine. He themes his working days to stay focused and productive.

On Monday at both companies he focuses on management, Tuesday is product development, Wednesday is marketing, communication and growth, Thursday is focused on developers and partnerships, and Friday is culture and recruiting. Jack takes Saturdays off to hike and Sundays are spent on reflection, feedback and getting ready for the rest of the week.

He lives across the street from his office to eliminate commute time and make the most of every hour in the day.

Charles Darwin One of the world’s best known naturalists and geologists, Charles Darwin, made a number of significant contributions to science, which impacted the way we think about the world.

His highly innovative work brought about a very dynamic routine filled with exercise and rest. He’d wake at 7am and begin the day with a short walk followed by a solitary breakfast.

He began his work day at 8am and stayed extremely focussed, interrupted only by the occasional visit to the snuff jar.

At midday he would head out for another walk with his pet terrier Polly. Charles would then eat lunch, read the newspaper, write letters and then take an afternoon nap. Late afternoon he’d get up and go on his third walk for the day.

In the evening he’d rest, while his wife, Emma read to him. For dinner they’d share tea and an egg. Once Emma had gone to bed Charles would stay up reading scientific books and lie awake in bed solving problems until midnight.

Start-up survival guide Q&A with Catarina Gutierrez from the Ministry of Awesome

As the Start-Up Activator for Ministry of Awesome (the “enablers” who “connect awesome ideas with the resources to turn them into reality”) Catarina Gutierrez is the friendly face that will help people get their business ideas off the ground and running in the right direction.

I caught up with her to talk about start-ups and what you need to know.

1. What are the most important things people should consider before launching a start-up?

I think the most important thing for a start up to know beforehand is to make sure that they’re actually addressing a problem that exists. I think a lot of people have these ideas that they just want to make a product that looks really cool, or software that does something really neat, but if it doesn’t address a problem in the market, then it’s not worth wasting any time and money on.

2. What are some common misconceptions about starting up on your own?

One of the most common ones I see is that it’s really expensive. I personally believe that it’s only expensive if you’re not prepared. If you haven’t done the research and validated the idea, then that’s where it gets expensive.

I think one of the important things is that if you start small, you can actually afford something relatively cheap and can self fund. For example, a website goes a long way and social media, when managed properly, can help market your idea or business.

3. What are the main challenges that start-ups face in New Zealand right now?

I think New Zealand is a relatively small market, so depending on the product or service that you offer, it can be relatively small if you’re just looking to help those in Canterbury or offering something to a specific region.

Thinking outside of the box and thinking outside of the country would be really advantageous of a start-up… that doesn’t mean you need to go overseas right away, but I think dreaming big is a really good thing.

4. Finance: where do people even begin?

I believe that to finance your own start-up you have to be very scrappy, which means not quitting your full time or part time job just because you have this passionate idea that you want to get off the ground. It means putting in the work outside of your normal working hours,

and using funding or any extra savings that you have from that work to do the other stuff that you’re passionate about.

Other funding can come in the form of small business loans. For example, there are a lot of people and trusts out there willing to give money to small businesses under the $5,000 or $1,000 range which can be really helpful, especially if you don’t want to invest thousands of dollars of your own money straight away. I think it’s also important to know that it doesn’t take a huge amount of money to build a website or to get business cards out there, and these things go a long way.

5. Do you believe that timing is everything for start-ups? If so, how do you know when ‘the time is right’?

I think timing is a part of it but I don’t think it’s everything. You will probably get to know your market very well in the process, so it’s really important to know when they are ready because what you’re doing is for the benefit of them.

Timing is also important as far as not rushing things just to be out in the market goes, which is

a mistake that I’ve made before with one of my own start-ups. I thought I had to push it out into the market before I was ready because I wanted to beat my competition, but it turned out my market wasn’t ready for the product that I was selling.

6. What would you say to people who have doubts about their ideas?

I think the more people you talk to, the more comfortable you get exposing your idea to other people. Doing this will also gain you a lot of feedback which is definitely something worth taking into consideration. I think you need to test your idea or your product as soon as possible, that way you’ll know if it’s something worth pursuing or not.

7. What are the biggest mistakes common to start-ups?

One of the biggest mistakes I see a lot is people telling their customers about what they do and not really engaging in a conversation or a community; talking at the customer instead of with them.

You get so passionate about your idea or your start-up but you’re not really engaging in meaningful conversations with your customers, so you come off as someone who is just advertising to them. One way to avoid this is to be talking to your customers about what you’re doing and why that benefits them, i.e. give it some context.

8. What attributes do successful start-ups seem to have in common?

I also think that good entrepreneurs know how to use their resources and people around them effectively, so whether that’s delegating some work to a team member, or knowing where a mentor can help them. As an entrepreneur you’re going to get a million different opinions from a million different people telling you to go right and then go left and you have to know how to use that advice really well or to say, ‘Thank you for your advice, but I’m going this way’.

9. How did MoA itself start-up? Are there any learnings there we can pass on to readers?

It started out with four board members who noticed that there was a need for people to be re-engaged with the city, so we started with the co-working space above the CBD bar to get more people collaborating together and working around each other.

One of the things that we’ve learned along the way is that it takes patience; as much as you want to go out and get everything done, you have to know when to wait for things. We have also learned how to harness strong partnerships and relationships with people – those take a lot of patience to build.

The other thing we do here is we test things very often. One of the new things we’re going to try is something called the ‘Fail Club’ where everybody gets together and talks about failures that they’ve learned in business and how we can all learn from that. We’re going to do it during one of our Coffee & Jams in September.

TURNING THE TIDE

Ever considered opening up shop in Timaru, or maybe even moving there? It’s just a hop, skip and a jump from Christchurch and Timaru Mayor Damon Odey will personally roll out the red carpet himself.

It’s an easy two hour drive to reach the seaside town in the heart of South Canterbury. So what has it got to offer you and your business?

It has a big city feel in a small friendly community, comparable wages to other districts, affordable homes, a bustling port and Caroline Bay, which has been voted in the top ten beaches in New Zealand. “The lifestyle opportunities are really underrated - people just don’t understand how great it is,” Damon says.

Damon was more than happy to talk me through why he reckons his beautiful city ought to have a second look in, despite some of the speed bumps it has been up against.

Who is Damon Odey?

While the folk in Timaru know their mayor by name, there’s a good chance if you are from outside of the region, you aren’t familiar with Damon and the work he is doing.

Born in Timaru Damon is a South Canterbury boy through and through. He grew up on a lifestyle block at Pleasant Point and went to a small rural school in the area.

But he didn’t grow up with aspirations to be mayor. He started off as a boat builder in his early days and enjoyed a stint in the UK, before coming back home to get into business with his old man. Damon and his father owned Parr & Co Engineering, the pair purchasing the company in 2002 and Damon becoming managing director.

“During my business career I decided I needed to do a bit of upskilling around human resources and management, so I headed off to Aoraki Polytechnic in the early 2000s. There’s nothing quite like going back to school after more than 20 years of being out of the classroom.”

So, what inspired this hard working family man to run for Timaru mayor? It all came down to timing Damon explains. “I’d done one term as a Timaru councillor and the mayor at the time, Janie Annear, was coming to the end of her third term as mayor and decided she would stand down.

“It was all about timing and opportunity, and sometimes you can’t choose either. While I was relatively busy on a few fronts I was committed to doing my bit for the district. So I put my hat in the ring for the Timaru mayorship.”

Damon won the 2013 election and jokes he got the upper hand due to his “outstanding good looks,” but to be fair there were only two in the race he says. Plus he reckons being a local lad born and bred in Timaru helped win over 20 | October 2015 www.canterburytoday.co.nz

public support. “I’ve done a bit of work in the community over the years through my business, as well as working in the not for profit sector with our community foundations. I am in a small village so people knew who I was which probably helped.”

Now, two years into the job he says everyday is a challenge. The short three year term means he is trying to assess and deliver as much as he can for the community in the fleeting time allotted.

At the next election in October 2016 he’ll be at the hands of the community, but for now he is making his time count. “I’m biting off as much as I can and then chewing it as fast as I can.”

There is no denying it, Damon is extremely proud of his town. And while, yes, he may be biased in his views towards the place he calls home, he also raises a persuasive argument as to why Timaru is one of the best towns in New Zealand.

“There are a number of positive aspects to life in Timaru, in fact it’s probably one of the best kept secrets in the country,” Damon says.

The district’s GDP outstrips the country’s GDP by more than one percent, the median house price is less than a third of Auckland’s, incomes are comparable to the big cities and with Mount Cook in its backyard and picturesque rivers and lakes nearby, the work and lifestyle environment is enviable. But just like any other town Timaru has its fair share of challenges.

Public enemy number one One of the biggest threats to the South Canterbury town is people – or lack thereof; simply not having enough skilled people in the district to keep up with growth and fill job vacancies.

“So for me my biggest focus is on retaining youth in our district. A lot of our youth think they have to go to the big cities to study or to find work and they don’t actually realise the vocational career pathways in our district that can lead onto employment opportunities.”

He says his biggest challenge, but also his greatest contribution to Timaru, is retaining the youth population. While a fair percentage will head to universities out of town, he wants to ensure that the ones who live in the district understand the unique possibilities available.

Through working with high school principals, Aoraki Polytechnic and industry sectors, Damon is creating a link and a dialogue between the industry and education providers. “It’s important we understand which industries need workers and how many so we can train appropriately and meet the demand.

“Then we can work together as a whole community to retain these kids and start a vocational career pathway. We can wrap the right support and training around them at a school level, so when they leave school they’ve the right skills that make them highly employable and a valuable asset.”

Last year the council conducted a survey of its 30 largest employers in the public and private sectors. “We asked the question ‘what is the biggest threat to your business?’ the answer was the labour poll.”

While the working population is inadequate, Timaru’s elderly population is one of the largest in the country per capita. “Our biggest forecast for growth is in the 65 to 75 age bracket.”

Unlike other small towns, Timaru doesn’t specialise in the production of one particular product, but a broad range. It has three diary factories, two meat factories, Mount Cook Salmon, a McCain factory, the seaport which hosts Talleys and Sanford plus a carrot factory that supplies juice to the Japanese market.

The primary industry is a major driver for the community and coupled with that is the secondary industries, which are either supporting the primary sector, or specialising in value added products. “So we actually pump quite a lot of product out of our district.”

And while the primary sector is booming, Damon says there is always room for more businesses. “We are very focused on rolling out the red carpet, not the red tape, for new businesses entering the Timaru economy.

We need to make sure that any business opportunities are capitalised on and the council is there to support people.”

“We’d also link businesses in with our Economic Development Agency and the Chamber of Commerce. Collectively as a district we would be able to provide all of the information you need on zoning opportunities, land and more.”

Local economic growth ‘Timaru’s economy booming’ and ‘Timaru’s economy in good shape’, ‘Upbeat on Timaru growth prospects’ and ‘South Canterbury’s economy a winner’ are some of the first hits you get when you Google ‘Timaru’s economy’.

The region has been leading the nation’s GDP and employment growth for more than a decade.

In the 2014 Timaru District Economic Development Indicators report released earlier this year by independent economists, Business and Economic Research Ltd (BERL), South

Canterbury was above the national average in five out of seven key performance indicators.

BERL used resident population growth, gross domestic product (GDP) growth, GDP per capita growth, employment growth, labour productivity growth, business unit growth, and business size growth as its key performance indicators.

Employment in the region grew by 4.0 percent from 2013-2014, stronger year on year than the national average, which grew by 3.1 percent.

GDP in the Timaru District grew by 4.8 percent in the year to March 2014, from $2.48 billion to $2.60 billion, driven by strong gains in the manufacturing, construction and business services sectors. Six of the past seven years Timaru District’s growth has been ahead of New Zealand’s.

Cargo exports leaving the Port of Timaru are up 63 percent in the year to September 2014, with the value ($585 million) also up 62 percent, reflecting the activity occurring both at the port and in the district.

The strengths of the Timaru District economy lie in the primary sector and the processing of primary products, according to the report. That was in part due to the district’s towns functioning as service sectors to the rural hinterland.

The region’s top three biggest employers by sector are manufacturing at 20 percent, social services at 19.6 percent, and retail trade and services at 17.2 percent, and the Aoraki Development Business and Tourism (ADBT) will continue to build on this moving forward. >

Recent regional developments “We live in a pretty cool spot, but the council wants to make it even better for all of our residents,” Mayor Damon Odey said recently.

Focus on Timaru | Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

One of New Zealand’s great cycle rides There are many ways to witness New Zealand in all its beauty, but perhaps one of the most invigorating is by bike; pedalling through nature with the wind in your face and great mountains and lakes all around.

Starting from Aoraki/ Mount Cook and ending in Oamaru, there is a cycle path that has been developed by Alps 2 Ocean (A2O) which enables locals and travellers to cross the South Island through the most beautiful terrain.

From the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean, the trail has been dissected into sections for all ages and all levels of experience to stay in local communities along the way, and discover all the attractions and scenery that the regions have to offer.

The eight section route takes users along both on and off-road trails with varying grades of easy to intermediate. The entire ride can take up to six days, but can be split into shorter stints like one day excursions for those who are looking for a shorter adventure.

Not only are A2O responsible for maintaining the trails, but they have also put together a website which contains all maps, trail routes and even eating and accommodation spots along the way, so you know exactly what to expect and can plan accordingly.

The first four sections opened in February 2013 and although further developments are still being made, the routes have made an exciting part of the country even more accessible for locals in the area and for those visiting.

Scotts Alps 2 Ocean Charity Bike Ride

On 11th – 14th November, A2O are hosting a charity cycle ride with Scotts Brewing Co. and it’s open to all who are adventurous enough to participate.

A clear focus on patients’ vision “It’s like my third child,” says Dr Rebecca Stack proudly of Christchurch Eye Surgery, the only state of the art, purpose-built ophthalmic surgery facility in the South Island.

It was Dr Stack’s vision for such a facility and her passionate commitment to persuading others through a sound business case to her way of thinking that resulted in the opening of this truly splendid building in the heart of Merivale.

“I suppose my idea for the surgery was initially born out of frustration that there weren’t any surgical facilities in Christchurch catering specifically for eyes. Then it became a desire to create something special, to make a statement for the Christchurch emerging after the earthquakes.”

That has certainly happened. Since it was completed in June 2014 the building has become a landmark; a fitting replacement for the heritage house that stood on the site before 2011. “We were mindful of our residential neighbourhood and while the building is not a villa, it is cedar-clad and we have retained the beautiful mature trees and lawns.”

The distinctive structure was designed by Wilson and Hill Architects to be light, spacious and welcoming. “Eye surgery patients aren’t unwell when they come here, so we wanted the waiting area to feel like a living room – as non-medical as possible. It provides a pleasant experience for both surgery staff and patients, rather than a more typical surgery unit.”

The facility was also designed with superior environmental architectural features. The air management system exceeds New Zealand standards, following instead Australian and European healthcare standards to improve air flows in the theatres and provide enhanced filtration rates. This improves the purity of the air in the clinical areas and reduces any risk of infection. Solar tubes are used for natural effect lighting and with the patient areas all on one level access is easy for wheelchairs and for people with mobility issues.

The specialist areas of the facility were also designed to meet the specific needs of ophthalmic surgeons and their patients. Dr Stack laughs that it took many late night meetings to determine the optimal location for the patients’ toilets. “The absolutely critical decisions that had to be made were around design and layout.”

Nine surgeons now co-own the facility. It was their collaboration as a joint venture that enabled Dr Stack’s bold idea to come to fruition. The two operating theatres are equipped with the latest technology all specifically designed for eye surgery. Here the surgeons carry out the full range of eye surgery in all the ophthalmic specialities, including cataract removal, eye and eyelid reconstruction, glaucoma management and retinal detachment repairs.

As co-founder and the driving force behind Christchurch Eye Surgery, Dr Stack was nominated in the Best Product or Service Business category of the Mumtrepreneur Awards run by Flybuys – awards that celebrate successful businesses run by mums.

Eight women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand; she could be your colleague, mother, sister, daughter or friend.

New Zealand women have one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the world. There will be 3,000 new incidences in the next 12 months.

That’s one out of nine women who will be diagnosed with this cancer in their lifetime and 90 - 95 percent of these women will have no history of the illness in the family.

On a more positive note, of the eight women diagnosed with breast cancer each day, 86 percent will survive five years or more. But The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) say that’s not enough – more research and better treatments are needed to help more women survive much longer.

On an annual basis, October is Breast Cancer Month. Individuals, families and especially businesses can be part of the pink campaign.

It’s easy - just go pink as we acknowledge, educate and raise funds to fight breast cancer.

The core objectives of The NZ Breast Cancer Foundation are to save lives through breast health education, promote early detection through mammograms, support women with breast cancer and fund research for better treatment and greater survival.

They have translated their experiences from that well-run kitchen into their new nest at the foot of the hills.

Chef, Rod, has brought his passionate yet simple approach to food with him as he cracks into his kitchen at Protocol. Serving a wide range of dishes, the restaurant now has brunch and lunch, dinner, drinks and kids menus that feature all kinds of classic favourites.

Available until 3pm, the brunch and lunch menu features casual meals such as Eggs Benedict, crepes, spiced chicken quesadillas and delicious pizzas from the pizza oven.

The dinner menu, available from 5:30pm, has so many delicious choices that it’s difficult to even pick a few to talk about here. Redcliffs welcomes new supermarket The Redliffs community will soon have a brand new state of the art New World supermarket right on its doorstep, after more than four years of having to travel for groceries.

The original supermarket on the Main Road site was demolished following the February 2011 earthquake, with all 70 staff let go. Since then, local residents have bought food from a small convenience store nearby, or been forced to drive out of the area to the closest supermarket.

Construction of the large replacement New World has been ongoing this year and is on schedule for a proposed opening in late October and will be 40 percent larger than its predecessor.

The new 818sqm supermarket was purchased a few months ago by Julia Spence, who has considerable experience within the supermarket industry as the former owner of the Four Square supermarket in Akaroa.

“I’m very excited about the new supermarket and can’t wait to open the door and be part of the local community,” she says. “It’s such a community environment out there and we’re just looking forward to opening and trading and being involved in the local community. People are really looking forward to it and the community is really positive about it.”

The three storey building will feature a carpark on the ground floor, with a customer lift, ramp and stairs going up to the retail floor on the first floor. Directly above will be a mezzanine office space.

“It’s a pretty unique store. When you’re standing at the checkout you will look out over the main road and see the sea. It’s going to be incredible,” she says.

The supermarket will contain brand new technology, including checkouts and LED lighting throughout.

Julia is in the process of employing 80-100 part time and fulltime staff and already has most of her managers in place. She’s now looking to fill the remaining staff positions and has gained a lot of interest from the local community, including school students wanting part time positions.

Goods & Services | Redcliffs New World Successful construction project The rebuild of Redcliffs New World has been in the pipeline for some time, with the Christchurch City Council approving resource consent for the new store back in March 2012.

Geotechnical surveying began that year, with construction taking longer than anticipated because of the high degree of underground remediation work required.

Fletcher Construction is the lead contractor on the project, with work continuing to schedule.

Julia says the building has been built to a high standard of earthquake strength.

“It’s very strong and the number of piles that were driven down is unbelievable,” she says.

“Fletcher Construction have been incredible.

It’s amazing what they’ve done because it’s such a unique store and such a different template to what’s been done prior.”

Delivering the ideal work environment Some high profile and well established Canterbury businesses are snapping up land in Waterloo Business Park, a $400 million development underway in Islington.

The first new buildings started appearing on the former Islington Freezing Works site bordered by Halswell Junction, Pound and Waterloo Roads last year, with fresh goods producer Santa Rosa Foods moving into a new $7m factory.

A large project is underway for NZX-listed transport provider Fliway, which is constructing a 6,500 sqm transport, warehousing and office building on a 1.5 ha site at Waterloo.

The pace has continued this year with seven new builds underway and four more due to begin in the next three months. Almost half the lots on the 114 hectare site have been either sold or leased.

Earthworks have commenced for a new facility for Hagley Building Products which is building a 9,000 sqm plant on a 1.8 ha site.

Construction is also progressing well for Conroy Removals and Ian Tulloch’s freight business Tulloch Transport.

Stunning home an award winner for Neil Rich Builders Last month the Master Builders House of the Year Gold Reserve finalists were announced, and on that list was Christchurch's Neil Rich Builders.

Nominated for their work on a stunning Fendalton property, the company had already won gold in the Westpac New Home over $2 million category, at the Master Builders House of the Year awards ceremony in July. The Gold Reserve award winners will be revealed at a second ceremony in November.

Company owner, Neil Rich believes the mere fact his company was even mentioned in the awards and given a shot at the Gold Reserve ribbon is a testament to their hard work. “It’s recognition for the type of work that we do,” he says.

The Fendalton property was designed by O’Neil Architecture and features timber walls and natural stone fireplaces both inside and out, adding a warm atmosphere to the spacious lounge which links to an outdoor living area. A 5.5m stone feature wall was also installed in the atrium by Neil and his team.

The beauty of the house makes it clear that a lot of hard work went into making it happen; a project that required a lot of trust and patience to even get started.

We had to put in stone piling because of the ground conditions to strengthen the foundations which was a first for us to do that kind of construction. The foundation alone cost nearly half a million dollars, so it has been an expensive exercise,” says Neil.

But all the hard work and learning along the way have obviously paid off, as the team can now celebrate at least one award under their belts and await the results of the Gold Reserve award in November.

Standing the test of time Neil started the company back in 1970 after he had served his time as a building and carpenter apprentice. After a few years bringing in work by himself he took on a few members of staff, one of which, Eric Eichholtz, has been with the company for 35 years now and serves as a foreman.

An authentic slice of Italian life If you’re in the mood for some Mediterranean flair, then the place to feel right at home at Casa Nostra, Christchurch’s newest authentic Italian restaurant. Its food is made with love and served up in a warm, rustic atmosphere.

Casa Nostra may be new to the Christchurch dining scene, but its owners have more authenticity and experience in the industry than probably any other Italian restaurant in town.

Paulette and her husband, Felice Mannucci opened the restaurant in December last year.

Paulette runs the front of house while Felice, originally from Viareggio, Tuscany, is the head chef.

The pair have worked in the industry for more than 30 years and Italian restaurants are their speciality. Previous to Casa Nostra they ran three well known establishments in Christchurch.

Most recently they sold an iconic Italian restaurant in the city which they opened and operated for 10 years.

Casa Nostra, their fourth Italian restaurant, located in Ferrymead, may just be their best yet.

A lot of dedication and hard work has gone into making the restaurant a success in the first year of operation. Paulette says she has put a lot of thought and energy into ensuring customers enjoy their experience from the moment they step through the door.

The real deal Felice grew up in Tuscany, in a family who has a history in running hotels and restaurants.

After training in Italy he brought his beloved cuisine to New Zealand.

The kitchen sources a lot of its fresh produce from local suppliers, as Felice believes fresh is best. Direct from the garden to the table is the philosophy that this kitchen operates by. But to

add to the flavours of authentic Tuscan food, Paulette says they bring in a few speciality products unique to Tuscany.

When Paint ‘n’ Sip Studio founder Amanda Anthony wanted a new challenge in her work, she took inspiration from her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, and started up her own business.

Currently, the sessions run five nights a week and are open to the public. A calendar on their website details what they’ve got going on and which painting will feature each night, so people can decide what date or painting suits them.

“The whole concept of painting and sipping actually started in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. It began as a fundraising thing initially, just to get people out of their house without having to worry about insurance issues and all the other things that you go through post natural disaster.

Although the business only started up in August 2014, they have already been nominated for a Champion Canterbury Business Award in the Retail/Hospitality category.

“I saw all of my friends doing it back home; having just moved to Christchurch three weeks before the February earthquake and living through a second natural disaster within a few years isn’t very fun. I was looking for something new and different to do myself, so I decided to start my own fun studio here,” says Amanda.

The studio’s sessions are run by one of four of Amanda’s staff who are all artists themselves.

Taking participants through a featured painting step by step, the two hour sessions are designed to be easily followed, so that even if you’ve never held a paintbrush before, you’ll be able to create your own piece of art all while singing, laughing and sipping away on your choice of beverage from their on-site bar.

Amanda thinks it is great news for the business, as they hadn’t even been operating for 12 months when they were named as a finalist.

Chisnallwood transforms its learning environment Joy Cowley once described the school library as “a sanctuary, a mine of treasure, a house of maps to secret lives in secret worlds. The library became my other home”.

Principal Richard Paton is understandably pleased with the library renovations.

“It’s been an amazing transformation of a library that was dated and damaged, and it has been transformed through creative thought and strategic thinking into a highly interactive learning centre,” he says.

Established as a Junior High School in 1967 and celebrating its 50th anniversary in late 2017, Chisnallwood is specifically designed to meet the needs of students in their preadolescent years. This design has been carefully developed over many years and is based on the best that has been seen in New Zealand and internationally.

It’s a space which is central to learning and plays an integral role in encouraging innovation, curiosity and problem solving skills. A catalyst for literacy and reading skills, school libraries provide support for teaching and learning across the curriculum.

“We have an incredible bunch of students here,” Sharon says.

In recognising the importance of this integral learning space, local Christchurch school Chisnallwood Intermediate, has carried out a complete refurbishment of its library.

“By being a dedicated Intermediate school for Years 7-8 (ages 10-13), Chisnallwood is able to offer a range of really focused extracurricular activities designed to prepare our students for secondary school; opportunities they might not get elsewhere.

“We had EQC repairs which were to be carried out as part of the Ministry of Education’s responsibility and we took this as an opportunity to revamp the entire library space,” Chisnallwood Intermediate library manager, Sharon Phillips explains.

“It was about utilising the existing space, but improving on it. We have incorporated new carpet, paint, furniture and IT systems.

The refurbishment has completely transformed the library into a Modern Learning Environment (MLE).”

MLEs are designed to support ‘multimodal’ learning styles, as well as collaborative communication styles that extend across different year groups. New schools in New Zealand are designed to embody all the requirements of an MLE and there is also scope for existing schools to work aspects of an MLE into their buildings, including upgrading the lighting, acoustics and air flow.

“The library represented a large space that was well overdue for refurbishment,” Sharon says.

“The space has been completely revitalised.

It is lighter, brighter and more welcoming than ever before. Furniture is multi-purpose to enable flexibility in working spaces and the area is broken up into smaller working zones.

“The flexibility in working space enabled ensures our library can be used for so much more than exchanging books and we have seen significantly increased student engagement as a result.”

Much more than a physical refurbishment, the school has upgraded the library’s technology resources to incorporate Chrome Books, iPads, six new standalone PCs, a Smart TV and

Apple TV provides students the resources for presentations and displays.

“An upgraded library management system, now fully online, also provides the students with external information access and this is an important component of modern learning,” Sharon adds.

“The aim was to provide a flexible learning space that would cater to the needs of a modern learning space and we have certainly achieved that.”

Planning commenced mid-2014 before interior designer Kyla Davies of Kyla Davies Design was brought in later in the year to plan furniture and colour schemes. Painting and carpet laying was completed during the Christmas holidays and the school was able to move back into the upgraded space at the beginning of Term 2 this year.
